Sights & Landmarks
Haddo House is an 18th-century mansion located near Ellon, Scotland. It was designed by William Adam in the Palladian style for the 2nd Earl of Aberdeen and later refurbished in the late Victorian era. The house features elegant Georgian architecture and luxurious Victorian interiors by Wright and Mansfield. Surrounding the mansion are terrace gardens with geometric rose beds, a fountain, commemorative trees, and a lavish herbaceous border.
Firstly Google maps gets you near but tries to direct you down some back lane, once you see the tourist signs for Haddo follow them and ignore Google. The website says that tours of the house start at 11am/1pm/3pm so plan accordingly. I arrived for the first one at 11am and had tour guide Charlotte who was very knowledgeable and full of information. I only had time to do the house and a walk around the chapel and gardens but the estate looks massive and some nice walks. Will have to come back another time for them.

Nice cafe, lovely scones. Gorgeous grounds and gardens and lots of different woodland walks, walk-around the lake etc. Good variety of birds andv wildlife. Tours around the House are guided so held at certain times each day. Limited guides on the day I visited so only every two hours. Will definitely return for a tour at a later date.

One of our family's favourite places for a day out - beautiful scenery, sheltered walks, ducks, geese, and fab play parks. Top notch

Very pretty house. Excellent tour guide who was super enthusiastic. I really enjoyed learning about its history and that of the family who occupied it for so many years. Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Haddo House is a wonderful place to visit. The house and grounds are beautiful, and full of history. Our tour guide, Andrew, was excellent — very knowledgeable, engaging, and brought the stories of the house to life with humour and enthusiasm. He made the tour both interesting and fun. Highly recommend a visit!
Kittipoika — Google review
An excellent location in lovely grounds. The house is interesting, and our guide was very well informed on its history. The cafe was welcoming and the scones were fresh.

An absolutely beautiful setting. Haddo House has plenty to offer, from weddings to family walks, from bike rides to playing in the park. The chapel is lovely. The grounds are stunning. The pathways are better than expected. A great place to visit, make sure you've got plenty of storage because you'll take loads of pictures!

The estate, owned by the Gordon family for over 400 years, hosts festivals during fair-weather months. It offers well-maintained walking paths with options to extend your walk using a map as a guide. Enjoyed our visit here. Beautiful house and gardens. Very nice cafe with friendly and helpful staff. Altogether a great day out. Recommended.

Haddo house has a big walking trail around the lake, with ducks and geese and swans. Playground for kids. A small fairy garden. A nice cafe shop. Everything you need for a day out.

Very well maintained, and with several options for dog walkers and families with small children. There are toilets conveniently located, and some benches in case you need to take strategic breaks. Lake with geese and ducks makes for a beautiful, picturesque scene. Highly recommended for a weekend stroll to unwind and enjoy yet another wee piece of bonnie Scotland!

We had a lovely day out at Haddo. Our two eldest grandkids fed the ducks and geese, zoomed down the zip line, clambered into the crows nest, then topped it off with finding a wee frog. We all had a great time. Highly recommend it, especially with kids 👌
Rhona R — Google review
Great place to walk in nature, lots of different options that you can use to extend your walk, use the map as a guide. All paths are well maintained, and only occasional is there significant puddles that you need to contend with. It is worth walking up to the Deer Statues and Large Urn, then across to Crathie Woods, before coming back down to the Lake. Not a single piece of litter in this area, plenty buckets and they are well used, although you are requested to take your litter home with you.

A delightful place to go and walk round with friends and family. Parking only £3.50 for the day. Few places to get something to drink and snack. Plenty of lovely scenery to take it.

Nature & Wildlife Areas
Forvie National Nature Reserve offers a stunning coastal expanse of sand dunes and low shrubs, home to breeding colonies of eiders, terns, and seals. It is known for having the biggest sand dunes in Britain and provides a dramatic backdrop to this part of Aberdeenshire's coast. The constantly shifting dunes have revealed layers of history, including the remains of a 12th-century church.
Great place for spectacular cliffs and in spring for thousands of nesting birds. Nature Centre near Colliestone is worth visiting, especially with children
Philippe D — Google review
This was amazing we walked over the sand dunes and along to the sign where the seals are. (My phones zoomed in you can't get that close to them which is good) there's loads of signs and information plus wild animals need their space. Just make sure you don't park at the car park with the information centre as that's a different walk, we ended up doing an hour walk there before realising. Was nice but we drove 3hours to come to this bit
Stephanie B — Google review
Beautiful estuary and dune system with walks and views. Areas roped off to protect nesting birds and seals - hurrah! Parking difficult, some car parks had height barriers, one had width barriers , but a small area had been left for larger vehicles, the easiest parking was at the reserve building ( even a £10 night stay for campers!) The wildlife was wonderful - so many seals - safely lolling on the beach , but then several swam up to the accessible part of the beach and had a good stare at us odd creatures!! Birds and butterflies, flowers…. A stunning place.
Jo G — Google review
Forvie National Nature Reserve, nestled in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, is a coastal gem. Its 1,000 hectares of shifting sand dunes and dune heath create a landscape akin to the Sahara Desert. Birdwatchers delight in eiders, terns, and wildfowl. In winter, seals with pups dot the estuary. Beneath the sands lie historical layers, including Forvie Kirk. Explore marked trails, admire cliff flowers in spring, and witness seals from Newburgh beach. Nature thrives here, leaving visitors awestruck.

Lovely little car park. Walks marked with paths easy to follow. Beautiful area and surprising coast views.
Samantha B — Google review
A fine place to visit if you enjoy a good countryside nature walk , take your camera as there is plenty to capture, magnificent scenery, wildlife , blue sky’s with signposts along the way to help you manoeuvre the well walked paths . A small car park is at the entrance with the Forvie Centre building available for visitors though it was closed due to Covid on the day that we visited . The walk is enjoyable though sadly the path is not best for anyone with walking disabilities or indeed suitable for a wheel chair, I have posted a few photos so that anyone preparing to visit can make a judgement before they arrive. It was a bright sunlit day with a wind blowing when we arrived, it certainly felt as if we had completed a good bit of exercise, the dog loved her walk that day too , meeting a few others out with their owners along our journey. In summary , plan ahead if you have not visited before , good parking, a facility to use on site ( closed during Covid lockdown) , signposted well, paths to follow , great scenery, wildlife to watch , dress appropriately as it is out in the country , wear good walking boots or shoes , my iPhone could not receive a signal during various parts of our walk .
Dano ( — Google review
A wonderful place for a walk to blowaway the winter cobwebs , the VC was open when we visited last weekend so could use the toilets with the usual covid precautions , the car park isnt very big so will get crowded during the summer months . Theres quite a few very well maintained paths leading south from the centre onto the reserve , we chose the path through the main part of the inland dune system where there were herons in some of the small lochs and lots of other birds judging by the amount of birdsong we heard , we made for Hackley bay and then came back up the coastal path back to the carpark . This is a place we always come back to for a lovely walk in peacefull surroundings
Tork M — Google review
Free parking of 10 places approximatly. Overnight parking was not specified. From there, few paths to get to the shore, approximatly 1 hour to get to the bay and get back. We saw cormoran on the way. It can get windy.

Prop of Ythsie, pronounced "icy," is a folly dedicated to George Hamilton Gordon, the Fourth Earl of Aberdeen. It was constructed in 1861 through subscriptions raised by Haddo Estate tenants. The structure boasts a castellated top with 92 steps offering panoramic views of the countryside and villages. Accessible from a car park off the B999, it's recommended to navigate carefully due to potholes.
Lovely walk to the Prop of Ythsie on a sunny Sunday and great views from the top of the tower, will definitely return
Tracey G — Google review
Lovely find, definitely worth a visit. It's lost in between fields so access is difficult. Sat Nav will guide you through an earth path. It's usable with a small car but be careful that your car is not too low or it will touch in the middle. The path is used by tractors etc... we drove all the way to the bottom of the grass path. Google will let you believe it's accessible by car but it's not. I left my car at the bottom, parked up on the grass so not to block access to the earth path. After it's a few minutes walk up a fairly steep hill. You can say hi to the cows on the way 😁. The stairs in the tower are very steep and narrow so be careful but the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking! I wouldn't recommend taking young children unless they are closely supervised.
Amandine O — Google review
Nice walk up to it from car park and fantastic 360° views at top of the tower. The spiral staircase is very dark so watch your footing
Luke — Google review
Good walk and stunning views. There is a good car park close by, about 250metres off the B999 and is easily seen on your left as you drive up the road. Car Park has quite a lot of pot holes, but ok if you take it carefully. The route is well maintained and easy to follow, it can get muddy / slippy underfoot as you walk amongst the trees, but with the right footwear it will be ok. Quite a steep climb as you come out of the trees, and walk through the fields, staying close to the stone wall. The prop is a Grade C listed building, dating back to mid 1800’s and is still in good repair. Worth taking time to walk to the top of the prop, but be careful as the steps can be slippy with water and bird droppings. The views from the top are amazing, remember and take your binoculars for best views.
Bearded C — Google review
Paths are mostly long grass between fields so wouldn’t recommend when wet but well worth the short climb for the all round views.
Neil G — Google review
Literally stumbled across this as it really isn't well signposted. Could see it in the distance coming from Loanhead of Daviot Stone Circle and wondered what it was! The inscription above the door reads "To George Hamilton Gordon, Fourth Earl of Aberdeen by his attached and grateful tennantry. He was born in Edinburgh on 28th January 1784 and died in London 14th December 1860". The car park is quite rough but roomy. Follow the farm track and signs to the structure. The stairs inside the tower are as you would expect to find in any castle-type building - narrow, steep and stone, so be careful! The view from the top is fantastic and worth the climb. You'll spend around 40 minutes walking to, up, enjoying the view, down again and back to your vehicle.
Vicky D — Google review
Nice short walk, 15 mins uphill through the fields. You can climb the tower for a panoramic view. Parks is easy just nearby the health club. Path can be muddy.
Steve R — Google review
Very good walk up a wee hill, suitable for all kids and dogs alike. On foot only, not suitable for biles or wheelchairs. The Prop is impressive and bigger than you’d expect from the road. Climb up the spiral stairs inside the folles to reach the parapet, which offers excellent views of Tarves and surrounding country, 360 degrees. Enough space at the top for two or 3 adults at a time.

The Coffee Apothecary in Ellon, Aberdeenshire is a popular spot located just 10 miles from Newburgh on Ythan Golf Club. This cafe offers a unique experience with its specialty goat ice cream and a variety of Indian and Asian cuisines. It's conveniently accessible by car via the A90 or by bus operated by Stagecoach from Aberdeen.
Tucked away just off the main square, The Coffee Apothecary is a true hidden gem in Ellon. With its warm atmosphere, expertly crafted coffee, and delicious homemade treats, it’s the perfect spot to relax and unwind. Whether you're stopping by for a quick caffeine fix or settling in for a leisurely catch-up with friends, the quality and attention to detail here never disappoint. A must-visit for coffee lovers!
Bearded C — Google review
I really enjoyed the coffee selection, and the choice of roasts on offer was a nice touch for a coffee shop. The food was pleasant. The croque didn’t have any bechamel/cheese on top which you would normally expect of a croque, but the filling inside was nice. The wedges were okay, but the portion size of this was small for the price charged.

I really love everything about this place. Great menu design, attention to detail and consistency across the cafe. Very tidy and well presented. Coffee selection was fantastic and the food was delicious. I'll be back.

They use recycled furniture from Christian churches and chairs. In the bathroom area they use pennies, Lego, and LP disks as floors. Food has multiple ingredients that are healthy and well blended together.

If you like your coffee, then you'll love The Coffee Apothecary. The owners roast their own beans in the Udny cafe. They also do teas, hot chocolate and chai lattes, as well as soft drinks. Lovely atmosphere with friendly staff. Varied breakfast and lunch menu with daily specials and gluten free options, plus a childs menu. Normally, on the last weekend of the month they open in the evening with a menu that changes each time.

If you're thinking about going, and think it's expensive, let me (as a very tight individual) assure you that it's worth every penny. The food quality, PROPERLY fancy coffee that is leagues above any nonsense in Starbucks or overpriced brown water in Black sheep. I'm not a coffee snob, I'm just summertime who didn't know what pepper coffee was until I tasted this. The service, second to none and the comfort and relaxed atmosphere was perfect. Treat yourself.

BrewDog is a brewery located in Ellon, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is one of the most technologically advanced breweries in the world and regularly features guest beers from various breweries around the world. The DogTap at BrewDog serves up wood-fired pizzas as well as a wide variety of craft beers.
Here my father was in his element and thoroughly enjoyed himself. He had never seen so many different beers on tap in one place. This is heaven :-) I tried the beer tasting board and it was great. The food was tasty too, the burger matched the beer exactly. This place is a must visit for any lover of good beer. Greetings from a beer drinker from the Czech Republic.

We’d been looking forward to visiting BrewDog for a long time and it was absolutely worth the wait! From the moment we walked into the restaurant, we felt like kids in a candy store. The design is incredible, with attention to every little detail. Our waitress Sammy was so lovely ,she took the time to explain all the different beers with such patience and kindness. Later, we joined the brewery tour led by Lisa, who was simply amazing ,funny, cheerful and full of energy. She really made the whole experience even more enjoyable! We’ve been to quite a few breweries around the world, but this one was by far the most fun and unique. Thank you for everything! Highly recommend to anyone visiting!

Best burger ever? Might just be! Now we are back in Aberdeenshire, we stopped by BrewDog DogTap and tried the ETFB burger — honestly, incredible. Double smashed patties, bacon, cheese, jammy onions, candied jalapeños… every bite was unreal. So much flavour and just the right mix of sweet, spicy, and crispy. This for us was one of the best burgers we have tasted, and we have had many around the globe. Paired it with a pint of Punk IPA and it was perfect. The waitress suggested some beers for my wife and offered tasters to help her choose. Much better than expected (even though I’ve just been in the Dubai venue). If you like a big, messy, proper burger — this one’s worth the trip!

We came for the brewery tour and we had a wonderful time with Lisa who takes us around the different parts of the brewery and tell us a lot of enjoyable stories along the way. She gives us interesting facts and stories about the brewery from its beginning to now. It's was a really great moment with nice beers (yes, plural) to enjoy during the visit. We also stayed for lunch and the burger and breakfast were great!

Although I have been working in Ellon for a while now, I was unaware that The Chocolate Bar was not solely a chocolatier. Upon visiting recently to purchase some chocolates, I discovered that they also offer an impressive coffee menu and ample seating options. I indulged in a latte which provided the perfect pick-me-up with its satisfying dose of caffeine. This charming little establishment boasts not only delicious chocolates but also a delightful assortment of food and beverages.
This place is nothing short of fantastic. It's tiny (so make sure you book) and it has such a lovely atmosphere, partly due to the relaxing decor and partly due to the wonderful staff. We had a pre booked afternoon tea (booking was super easy). What a treat it was. Everything was made on the premises, the sandwiches were generously filled and made with a selection of different breads all of which were so fresh. The bite sized sausage rolls were crisp on the outside and well flavoured, I even loved the garlicky gazpacho soup. The scones were light and fresh and beautifully flavoured, and came with bowls of jam and clotted cream. The cakes were something else entirely, too many to mention from super light carrot cake to a dense and fudgy chocolate brownie, to a custard cream that melted in the mouth, there was even glasses of strawberry Eton mess, oh my goodness so good, and everything was beautifully presented. We were served with hot and cold drinks of our choice, and the helpful staff checked regularly (but not too much) if we needed anything else. We felt welcome to sit and enjoy our afternoon tea have a well earned catch up and a laugh. We're looking forward to returning (another customer told me they've booked in for Christmas afternoon tea already so we might do the same) and sampling some of their regular menu as all the food we saw looked fantastic. Everyone involved here deserves to be proud of the quality of the food and the customer service they provide.

Small cosy wee cafe that filled up really quickly on the morning i was in , was too early for the tempting selection of chocolate and cakes so settled for the chicken and mayo toastie and a flat white , both were excellent and served by the friendly young lass who had taken the order , pricing was very reasonable and i will be back for one of the very tempting hot chocolates

I don't often write reviews but I have to say about the exceptional service and delicious food and drinks at The Chocolate bar today in Ellon. Took my daughter for a treat, she'd had a tough week, the greeting was warm and friendly with the woman taking time to talk to my daughter, the drinks and food were delicious, a very welcome treat. We were so impressed we brought my husband and son after parkrun. 100% recommend.

What a lovely place. Toasties were excellent and the cakes to die for. A couple of the other people in the shop recommended the strawberry tart to us and it was probably the best strawberry tart iv had . We also bought a box of chocolates that looked amazing

Although I’ve worked in Ellon for a few years now, I never realised this was a coffee shop! I always thought it was “just” a chocolatier but when I popped in earlier today to buy some chocolates, I realised they had a great coffee menu and a good spread of tables for sitting in. I had a latte and it was exactly what I needed for a decent caffeine top-up. It’s a really nice, cosy little place with a good range of food and drinks, as well as the excellent chocolates of course. First visit today, but it won’t be the last. I grabbed a bag of chocolate to take away as a gift and the selection is excellent.

The menu features an array of delicious food options, including standout items like their bacon bagel that has garnered rave reviews from visitors. Coffee lovers will appreciate the expertly crafted brews, whether it's a classic Americano or a robust double shot flat white that exceeds expectations.
Small, but pleasant - and according to my missus, that's a good thing. Fantastic independent coffee, great staff, a bit pricey but much prefer to pay over the odds for decent coffee than cheaper chain stuff. Owner's a legend too. A+++ would visit again.

Positives: Opens early. Tasty fresh food. Plenty of room to sit down. Negatives: Overpriced (£7.50 for a creme cheese and smoked salmon bagel!.....its not London......no wonder they dont put the prices next to the food on the menu!). £11.30 all in for a bagel and coffee. Couldnt seem to get 4G reception in the shop and no wi-fi i could see on my phone Ambiance a bit uninspiring Would give it 3.5 stars but google reviews wont let me

****In response to the sarcastic reply from the moronic owner.**** The ends of the wrap are tucked in on both sides so the filling doesn't fall out. Instead of being cheap, half filling things and charging a fortune you should perhaps take reviews seriously. Should also practise your customer service skills as they are clearly lacking. Ordered a chicken mayo sandwich and a chicken mayo wrap. Sandwich was fine but the wrap was half empty (an inch empty on both sides). £13.20 all in for 2 items is a bit of a joke. Went to the Ythan burger van in the Aldi car park for a much cheaper & much better fill up.

Called in for a coffee, partner had her usual americano, which met her aproval, I went daft and had a double shot flat white, which I have to say although obviously very strong, was much better than a lot of places that seem to forget what a flat white should be. I also had what has to be the best bacon bagel I've had in a long time, even the partner was surprised how quick I ate it. Loved it. Update. Went here again 5 days later and again the bacon bagel was so good. This time had a single shot flat white and again this place knows how to do a flat white, to many places now give you whats more or less a latte in a small cup. Definately recomend.

Ordered Special Calzone, chicken pakora, large donner kebab and chips. The food was prepared fresh and we had a reasonable waiting time. The staff were friendly, efficient and professional. The food was amazing; the pakora batter was crispy and tasty and the chicken was moist. The chips were well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The kebab meat was cooked to perfection and not dried out. The side salad was fresh and crispy and tailored to my specific requirement and the olive oil dressing was delicious. The special calzone was bursting with large chunks of chicken, lamb, donner meat and cheese. The sauces perfectly complimented the meal. The food was 10/10. Thank you.

Been using this shop since I moved to Ellon 6 years ago. What is good? The food is always fresh I always see them cutting fresh meat and the premises are the most hygienic I have see for a food establishment. The flavours of all the meats are awesome the pizzas are way above Pizza Hut and dominoes and the staff are all very pleasant and always smiling. Use the delivery service a lot and again always within the time limit set by the app and very friendly drivers. 5/5 food 5/5 customer service 5/5 delivery The bad points ! Not yet found any so keep up the great work

I stopped by this kebab shop on a whim, and I’m so glad I did! The food is incredible – fresh, flavorful, and cooked to perfection. The meat was juicy and tender, the spices were spot on, and the portions were generous without being overwhelming. You can really tell they care about quality here. The staff were friendly, welcoming, and quick to get the food out, even during a busy time on the evening. The shop itself is clean and has a warm, inviting vibe that makes you want to come back. Definitely one of the best kebab spots around! I will be back 🤩

Ordered from here as it was close to our hotel. Seriously good kebabs and lovely crunchy chicken pakora too. I’ve not written any reviews in ages but I had to do one for this. BTW their red sauce is beautiful too.The way a sauce should be for kebabs. Not sickly sweet or overwhelming with a chilli kick.
