Haddo House is an 18th-century mansion located near Ellon, Scotland. It was designed by William Adam in the Palladian style for the 2nd Earl of Aberdeen and later refurbished in the late Victorian era. The house features elegant Georgian architecture and luxurious Victorian interiors by Wright and Mansfield. Surrounding the mansion are terrace gardens with geometric rose beds, a fountain, commemorative trees, and a lavish herbaceous border.
Firstly Google maps gets you near but tries to direct you down some back lane, once you see the tourist signs for Haddo follow them and ignore Google. The website says that tours of the house start at 11am/1pm/3pm so plan accordingly. I arrived for the first one at 11am and had tour guide Charlotte who was very knowledgeable and full of information. I only had time to do the house and a walk around the chapel and gardens but the estate looks massive and some nice walks. Will have to come back another time for them.
Joanne B — Google review
Nice cafe, lovely scones. Gorgeous grounds and gardens and lots of different woodland walks, walk-around the lake etc. Good variety of birds andv wildlife. Tours around the House are guided so held at certain times each day. Limited guides on the day I visited so only every two hours. Will definitely return for a tour at a later date.

Very pretty house. Excellent tour guide who was super enthusiastic. I really enjoyed learning about its history and that of the family who occupied it for so many years. Highly recommend if you are in the area!

Haddo House is a wonderful place to visit. The house and grounds are beautiful, and full of history. Our tour guide, Andrew, was excellent — very knowledgeable, engaging, and brought the stories of the house to life with humour and enthusiasm. He made the tour both interesting and fun. Highly recommend a visit!
Kittipoika — Google review
An excellent location in lovely grounds. The house is interesting, and our guide was very well informed on its history. The cafe was welcoming and the scones were fresh.

An absolutely beautiful setting. Haddo House has plenty to offer, from weddings to family walks, from bike rides to playing in the park. The chapel is lovely. The grounds are stunning. The pathways are better than expected. A great place to visit, make sure you've got plenty of storage because you'll take loads of pictures!

Haddo Country Park is a stately home with palatial gardens, an extensive art collection, and opulent furnishings. The estate, owned by the Gordon family for over 400 years, hosts festivals during fair-weather months. It offers well-maintained walking paths with options to extend your walk using a map as a guide. Enjoyed our visit here. Beautiful house and gardens. Very nice cafe with friendly and helpful staff. Altogether a great day out. Recommended.

Haddo house has a big walking trail around the lake, with ducks and geese and swans. Playground for kids. A small fairy garden. A nice cafe shop. Everything you need for a day out.
Flori P — Google review
Very well maintained, and with several options for dog walkers and families with small children. There are toilets conveniently located, and some benches in case you need to take strategic breaks. Lake with geese and ducks makes for a beautiful, picturesque scene. Highly recommended for a weekend stroll to unwind and enjoy yet another wee piece of bonnie Scotland!
Luis N — Google review
We had a lovely day out at Haddo. Our two eldest grandkids fed the ducks and geese, zoomed down the zip line, clambered into the crows nest, then topped it off with finding a wee frog. We all had a great time. Highly recommend it, especially with kids 👌
Rhona R — Google review
Great place to walk in nature, lots of different options that you can use to extend your walk, use the map as a guide. All paths are well maintained, and only occasional is there significant puddles that you need to contend with. It is worth walking up to the Deer Statues and Large Urn, then across to Crathie Woods, before coming back down to the Lake. Not a single piece of litter in this area, plenty buckets and they are well used, although you are requested to take your litter home with you.

Historical landmark
The Tarves Medieval Tomb, a significant historical monument, showcases the rich heritage of the past. This ancient landmark holds immense historical value and serves as a testament to the people and events that shaped our history. The tomb, situated in Tarves, symbolizes an important period of medieval times. Its architectural grandeur and intricate design reflect the skilled craftsmanship of that era.
Now under a protective cover. Interesting gravestones in Churchyard.
EUAN M — Google review
Sir William Forbes was the 7th laird of Tolquhon. He created a fabulous residence at Tolquhon, and after finishing the castle he turned his attention to a suitably elegant tomb. The tomb was created in 1589 and Sir William was laid to rest beneath it in 1596. The tomb is in the form of a canopied niche, over a chest carved with classical elements. On either side of the chest are small statues of Sir William and Lady Elizabeth. These are surrounded by grotesque animals and heraldic symbols.
Tork M — Google review
Not really much to see here. Just an old tomb in a churchyard with a small of information to read.

Prop of Ythsie, pronounced "icy," is a folly dedicated to George Hamilton Gordon, the Fourth Earl of Aberdeen. It was constructed in 1861 through subscriptions raised by Haddo Estate tenants. The structure boasts a castellated top with 92 steps offering panoramic views of the countryside and villages. Accessible from a car park off the B999, it's recommended to navigate carefully due to potholes.
Lovely walk to the Prop of Ythsie on a sunny Sunday and great views from the top of the tower, will definitely return
Tracey G — Google review
Lovely find, definitely worth a visit. It's lost in between fields so access is difficult. Sat Nav will guide you through an earth path. It's usable with a small car but be careful that your car is not too low or it will touch in the middle. The path is used by tractors etc... we drove all the way to the bottom of the grass path. Google will let you believe it's accessible by car but it's not. I left my car at the bottom, parked up on the grass so not to block access to the earth path. After it's a few minutes walk up a fairly steep hill. You can say hi to the cows on the way 😁. The stairs in the tower are very steep and narrow so be careful but the view from the top is absolutely breathtaking! I wouldn't recommend taking young children unless they are closely supervised.
Amandine O — Google review
Nice walk up to it from car park and fantastic 360° views at top of the tower. The spiral staircase is very dark so watch your footing
Luke — Google review
Good walk and stunning views. There is a good car park close by, about 250metres off the B999 and is easily seen on your left as you drive up the road. Car Park has quite a lot of pot holes, but ok if you take it carefully. The route is well maintained and easy to follow, it can get muddy / slippy underfoot as you walk amongst the trees, but with the right footwear it will be ok. Quite a steep climb as you come out of the trees, and walk through the fields, staying close to the stone wall. The prop is a Grade C listed building, dating back to mid 1800’s and is still in good repair. Worth taking time to walk to the top of the prop, but be careful as the steps can be slippy with water and bird droppings. The views from the top are amazing, remember and take your binoculars for best views.
Bearded C — Google review
Paths are mostly long grass between fields so wouldn’t recommend when wet but well worth the short climb for the all round views.
Neil G — Google review
Literally stumbled across this as it really isn't well signposted. Could see it in the distance coming from Loanhead of Daviot Stone Circle and wondered what it was! The inscription above the door reads "To George Hamilton Gordon, Fourth Earl of Aberdeen by his attached and grateful tennantry. He was born in Edinburgh on 28th January 1784 and died in London 14th December 1860". The car park is quite rough but roomy. Follow the farm track and signs to the structure. The stairs inside the tower are as you would expect to find in any castle-type building - narrow, steep and stone, so be careful! The view from the top is fantastic and worth the climb. You'll spend around 40 minutes walking to, up, enjoying the view, down again and back to your vehicle.
Vicky D — Google review
Nice short walk, 15 mins uphill through the fields. You can climb the tower for a panoramic view. Parks is easy just nearby the health club. Path can be muddy.
Steve R — Google review
Very good walk up a wee hill, suitable for all kids and dogs alike. On foot only, not suitable for biles or wheelchairs. The Prop is impressive and bigger than you’d expect from the road. Climb up the spiral stairs inside the folles to reach the parapet, which offers excellent views of Tarves and surrounding country, 360 degrees. Enough space at the top for two or 3 adults at a time.

Historical landmark
Udny Castle, located in a flat patch of land, stands as the Udny family's historical home. The castle has undergone various transformations over time but still retains its imposing presence. Its current form is a rectangular tower-house dating back to the late 14th or early 15th century, with a 19th-century Baronial mansion that was unfortunately destroyed in the 1960s.
A highlight on our local walk is the view of the castle as you pass through the leafy grounds from Pitmedden to Udny Green , the castle is a private residence so cant be visited
Tork M — Google review
As you walk through the gates and wander thought a meandering path on your way to the castle, you can't help it but wonder "How was this place not used for a movie set yet?" It's well looked after, and only a 25-minute-drive from Aberdeen on a rainy day! Note: NO VEHICLES ALLOWED. Park near the Udny Green inn and walk for 5 minutes - you may want to stop by the local library (the red phone booth outside its doors is now a defibrillator station); also give your respect at the World War I monument. DOGS ON LEADS ONLY. There are sheep in the fields around, better safe than sorry. There are no dog waste bins (or any other bins for that matter) so you'll have to carry the bag with you (that's if you're a decent human being who'd actually pick up after their dog!) Private residence houses in proximity, however clear signage is present to keep you right on the path. The path makes a large circle, however does not take you back to the castle, but on the main road outside Udny Green, about 12 minute walk to the inn. It's a quiet road with good visibility but keep in mind and consider going back the same path you came instead, especially if there are children in your group.

We were given a voucher for the 7 course tasting menu with matched wines as a thank you gift. We were welcomed with champagne and canapés to start with. This was followed by an exquisite seven course meal with wines to match. Our waiter Craig talked us through each course and the wine selection explaining why the wines went with the food. It was a wonderful evening in a beautiful setting. It was a really unique experience and we loved every minute of it.

A bit of an institution in the area, which I had avoided being a vegan and their website not talking of veggie/vegan options. Yet when we did book the chef produced a wonderful, absolutely delicious course list, one of the best vegan meals I've ever had. The style matched my friends meals, as in the same size and feel of each course so I didn't feel too weird. The servers and the kilted chef all popped out to check it was okay and I didn't feel awkward. The food was delicious, but the dessert platter of mango sorbet, lemon tart and chocolate was just something else. I've been dreaming of that lemon tart, I've woken up with the taste of it on my lips in the morning, it was probably one of the tastiest thing's I've ever had. A really nice interior, lovely clean bathrooms, great staff and overall fab experience. Resonably priced for such a restaurant. I expected to sell at least one kidney since I was paying for everyone, but I managed to get away with all of my organs and I'm thinking of booking again! And will definitely have to check out the gin garden out back.
