Hirosaki

Hirosaki is a city on the Japanese island of Honshu. It’s centered on the 17th-century Hirosaki Castle. The surrounding Hirosaki Park is known for its thousands of cherry trees. Preserved samurai homes in the Nakamachi area include the Ito and Umeda family residences. Fujita Memorial Garden is a traditional, 2-tiered garden with a teahouse. To the south, Saishoin Temple is built around an ornate, 5-story pagoda.

Castle
Sights & Landmarks
Hirosaki Castle, a historic and majestic structure built in 1611, is surrounded by over 2,600 cherry trees, lush gardens, and a moat. The castle is particularly famous for its stunning scenery during the cherry blossom season in spring when the mainly Yoshino cherry and other varieties come into bloom. This spectacle attracts numerous visitors who come to enjoy the breathtaking sight.
Who would have thought one castle can be moved!! Yeah, this place was slid 70 metres from it’s original place as walls covering this castle were damaged. Once walls get repaired castle will be moved back. This thought on its own is insane that they moved whole castle. If visiting aomori, can plan a day trip to Hirosaki. Note - don’t forget to collect stamps on your tickets when visiting inside castle

Like a small Central Park of the city. There is a botanical garden around the castle. Also, Civic Center is nearby. Definitely pay a visit if you stay more than 24 hours here in this city.
Chris Y — Google review
The park surrounding the castle is absolutely beautiful, and especially in the spring or fall. The story of the castle is fascinating, not the least in modern history, as it has veen uprooted and moved in 2015 and now prepared for another move. The inside is very nice and the area around it is very spacious and pretty.

I walked into the park and felt that little lift you get when a place is even prettier than the photos. The trees were glowing in every shade of autumn, yellow and orange and bright red with a few soft pink leaves catching the light. The castle peeked through the branches like a postcard come to life. The moat worked like a mirror and doubled the colors so well that I kept stopping just to stare. What I loved most was the mood. Cool air, the quiet crunch of leaves, couples moving slowly, and kids chasing tiny piles of red maple. I took too many photos, then put my phone away and just stood there. It felt good to be small in a big beautiful scene. Tips from my visit. Come early for calm paths and kind light. Walk the full loop around the moat, cross a few bridges, sit for ten minutes and watch the reflections ripple. Wear comfy shoes. Bring a spare battery if you are a photo person. I left with cold fingers and a very warm heart. I would come back in a heartbeat.

To fully tour the whole area which includes the botanical garden, Fujitsu memorial garden, and the castle, you would need a good 2-3 hours with plenty of walking but it's worth it. To go to Fujita memorial garden, you would need to walk out of the Hirosaki park. Too bad we were several weeks too early for the fall foliage festival at the park. The castle is rather small but the park grounds are quite massive.
Carl W — Google review
Absolutely beautiful gardens. The autumn colours are gorgeous and you get a great mountain in-the-distance view as well. Worth the visit and cater for about 2 hours. Admission is ¥320 per adult. Visited on 1st Nov, 2025.

Went here in the last week of April this year, my first spring trip in Japan. When they say spring, Hirosaki Park and Castle definitely is a must..and was speechless by the beauty which welcomed us. Cherry blossoms and petals wherever you go, pruned differently to represent how apples are pruned in the area. Despite the large area, food stalls are available at designated sections of the park as well.

Date of enjoyment: 17/4/25 Came here first day of the matsuri festival 2025, it was early in terms of blossom perhaps 5 days early. Nonetheless you can tell by the way the trees and how they are grown Hirosaki cherry blossom so special. Imagine it lit up at night will also be stunning, we were fortunate to come on a sunny day and Mt. Iwate in the background really is a stunning image of Japan, castle, cherry blossom and a mountain in the background does not getting anymore Japan. There’s so much to see here from the castle to the view of the mountain and a walk around the castle with so much cherry blossom, do allow 2hrs here. I can appreciate why this is one of the top cherry blossom viewing spots in Japan.

Park
Hirosaki Park, part of the Hirosaki Castle grounds, is renowned for its stunning cherry blossoms and vibrant autumn foliage. The park boasts around 2,600 sakura trees of 52 different varieties that bloom from late April to early May. This period also marks the famous Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival, attracting visitors from all over Japan and beyond.
As far as I know, this is the place where you can enjoy the most beautiful and most numerous cherry blossoms in Japan. With cherry blossoms filling the view, so many stalls, haunted houses, freak shows, new and old, it's a great place for everyone, adults and children alike. If you want to experience the real cherry blossom in Japan, this is a must.
Shige S — Google review
I was there in spring, this park became green scenery with some flowers left to decorate the park. Mount Iwaki can be seen from here. It would be nice if it is cherry blossom season. Park itself is free. Public toilets are available.
Thanathip M — Google review
Stunning park in the cosy old town of Hirosaki. I visited during the autumn Chrysanthemum and Maple festival, which immediately made it one of my favourite spots in Japan. The colours and atmosphere both were amazing. We took a boat ride on one of the castle's moats, with a very hearty, joyous guide. It was a stunning day.

A pleasant park surrounding Hirosaki Castle. The vast majority of the park is open without paying a fee. Some areas closer to the castle are onoy available after paying a fee. Beautiful in the spring and fall.

End Oct 2025. There was an event in the Hirosaki Park. It was quite chilly at night. It starts from 4 pm and we went there at about 6pm. It takes us about 2 hours to complete the place including taking pictures. The organizer has placed some fireplaces in an area for those people who felt cold. The autumn trees are really nice under the lights. Anyway, it is nice walk and for those who are not used to cold, do wear warmly. Parking was quite easy as it wasn't peak season I guessed.

Small castle but big garden … it will be very beautiful during Sakura period, I think

Nice Park for relaxing or meeting friends There are lots of shady spots for a picnic and easy to park. For a minimal fee, you can enter the botanical garden, castle, etc. We will be returning in Autumn to check out the becolors. Autumnal cokors.

I came here during the Sakura blossom time, it’s so amazing! It’s less crowded than big cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, and you got to enjoy the Sakura! Better to bring some snacks, sake, picnic pack to sit and enjoy under the Sakura trees! The walk along the Sakura corridor is superb!

The Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival is a must-visit event held in late April to early May at Hirosaki Park, known for its 2,600 cherry trees of 52 varieties. The festival features illuminated yozakura (cherry blossoms at night) and 'hanaikada,' flower rafts of cherry petals covering the moat. Visitors can enjoy the magical atmosphere created by the lit-up trees and explore various stalls and stands in the area.
Generally, you look up at the cherry blossoms. But here in Hirosaki (弘前), you "look down" on the cherry blossoms. Hirosaki Castle is surrounded by many moats (堀). Since ancient times, moats have protected it from enemies. In times of peace, cherry trees were planted around the moats. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom, they are reflected on the surface of the moats. So, you "look down" on them. That's "Hirosaki way". When the cherry blossoms fall, the petals float on the water. It's like a carpet of cherry blossoms. It is called "hanaikada (花筏flower rafts)". It is just as beautiful as the cherry blossoms in bloom. Hirosaki is 700km north of capital Tokyo. It is located at the foot of the beautiful Mt. Iwaki. It is also famous for its brave summer festival "NEBUTA". 60% of the apples produced in Japan are grown in the Hirosaki Plain. Come and visit Hirosaki. If possible, in late April.

Literally out of this world beautiful. Everywhere you look is just stunning. It is very packed so be prepared for that. The park is huge so bring comfortable shoes. There's plenty food and places to set up a picnic. Parking is limited so get there early if you're driving.

This place has some of the biggest and oldest cherry trees I have come across with trunk sizes about 1.5 to 2m in diameter. The backdrop of Mt Iwaki in the distance when taken from the West moat and the cherry trees is impressive. So are the views from the 'castle' itself.

Hirosaki Apple Park is a delightful destination for apple enthusiasts and families alike, nestled in the heart of Hirosaki's apple tourism scene. Spanning over 5.2 hectares, this park boasts an impressive collection of around 2,300 apple trees featuring approximately 80 different varieties. Visitors can immerse themselves in the joy of picking their own apples while exploring educational exhibits on cultivation and nutrition.
My dream to visit and pick apples~ I had a lot of fun here. It’s not crowded so we enjoyed the experience! Apple picking timings were eve try half hour and the guide will bring you to the respective areas you can pick apples. It’s chargeable by weight! The Apple type you can pick changes frequently, depending on whats ready for picking. Lovely views too without big crowds. Eatery had meal and snack options. Food was actually yummy! We enjoyed apple cutlet the most, it was so special. Thin apple slices inside our pork cutlet. Highly recommend to try. Apple curry was also really delicious. For snacks, we found the apple pies to be very average for a dine in place, but the soft serve was so amazing. Best apple soft serve~ must try! Shop had a good variety of apple precuts, and also different types of apples to purchase!

I was here because I love Aomori prefecture. I love Apple. I spent the night in my K-truck in one of the garden’s parking, in front of the apple trees field. It was splendid time. In Winter. With snow. I woke up early morning and enjoyed in peaceful the park, I met local farmer, talk with them about their apple work. Then in bought 12 bottles of apple juice. I recommend Hirosaki area. Its beautiful place.

When you think Aomori, apples are the star, and Hirosaki Apple Park lives up to the hype. Spotted this gem online with solid reviews and decided to check it out after a short drive from our hotel. Totally worth it. Setting (5/5) Absolutely charming. Rows of lush apple trees stretch in every direction, with crisp mountain air and views of the surrounding hills. Felt like stepping into a postcard of rural Japan. Apple Picking (5/5) Booked a ~30-minute picking session—perfect length. Staff gave clear, friendly instructions on how to twist and pick without damaging the fruit. The apples? Incredible. Crisp, juicy, perfectly sweet with that signature Aomori snap. Ate more than I picked! Souvenir Shop (4/5) Convenient little shop packed with apple-themed goodies—juices, jams, dried apples, and cute packaging. Picked up a few gifts; prices fair, quality high. Staff (5/5) Super warm and knowledgeable. Explained apple varieties, growing seasons, and even shared a bit of local apple history. Made the experience fun and educational. Overall (4.5/5) A joyful, hands-on taste of Aomori’s pride. Family-friendly, relaxing, and delicious. If you’re anywhere near Hirosaki, make time for this—especially in autumn. Highly recommend! 🍎

What a wonderful Aomori apple themed experience this is. Great views from the look out point, great store with anything apple related, great café with apple pie and apple sorbet, historical building, great picnic area surrounded by apple trees. There's also a huge sign of Mount Iwaki and an apple picture frame. Love it.

Take the 100 yen bus to the apple park on time. Timetable of the bus is attached. All types of apples are delicious and worth to try. You can take the tour for visit inside and take your apples by yourselves. Remember to try the apply curry in the restaurant. However, you need to take your limited time for all things. The post card at gift shop is excellent.

Fujita Memorial Garden is a traditional Japanese-style garden located near Hirosaki Park, built in 1919 by prominent local businessman Fujita Kenichi. The garden features traditional landscaping, waterfalls, and stunning views of Mt. Iwaki. It includes several small buildings such as a traditional Japanese house, a Western-style house with a tea room inside, a tea ceremony building, and an archaeological museum.
This is the best garden I’ve visited in Japan! It was so quiet, I was the only guest, I could walk around freely. The setting and scenery are so beautiful. I felt so relaxed walking through here. It’s well worth a visit.

Excellent Japanese garden next to hirosaki park that one should enjoy! It is probably overlooked compared to the park and cafe but this was a really a gem. Incorporates the mountain and surrounding really well. You can sit there and gaze around at how well they have designed the garden!

French restaurant
Restaurant Yamazaki in Hirosaki is a renowned French restaurant that prides itself on using locally sourced ingredients to create authentic and exquisite French-style dishes. The menu showcases the producers of the ingredients, emphasizing their commitment to supporting local farms. The restaurant's focus on apples and pork from nearby farms is evident in their seasonal set menus, offering a unique dining experience.
You would certainly feel the menu is a bit expensive. But I can say it worth the price. The atmosphere is quite and relaxing. You don't need to dress formally (just smart casual should be okay). The service is quick. The waiter can communicate well in English, which is a plus. The food are fresh and the taste is well balanced. The wagyu is grilled just right. My family tried Set A, B and S. I would personally recommend either Set A or S.
Ng T — Google review
If you're looking for an Aomori Apple Experience, this is the place to go. French may sound a bit pricey but they offer very reasonable price, especially lunch. I would say it's a still, some 4 dish courses are only $3000 yen. The seasoning and sauces are spot-on, gentle, light, elegant but a bit playful with Apples. The meat courses were very well cooked. Tender yet juicy.
Edward H — Google review
The service is very bad. I felt not good when the waitress looked at me. The main dish was chicken while the texture was not an issue but the taste was strange. It smelled like it was not fresh or it was not cooked well. Beside the main dish, the other dishes were just soap which meant the price and the quality of the dish were not match. One more thing, I knew this restaurant from website and also reserved from their own web site three month in advance. When I arrived there, I haven’t been told that the price and the course has changed. (Main dish was changed and the price rises from 6600 yen to 7700yen per person). It was not a big dill but I think they should make sure that the information is same on web and on paper menu in the restaurant. Though sometimes information updating takes time, they should tell at the reception.

A Truly Disappointing and Embarrassing Experience We made a reservation weeks in advance via email to celebrate a birthday, only to be told upon arrival that there was no confirmation despite confirmed several times (see attached photos). Staff in charge of email clearly failed in reading, inferring and communicating. No apology, no accountability. We were left standing awkwardly at the exit like unwanted guests until a male staff member kind enough to clear a table & finally seated us after 20 minutes. While I was grateful, I couldn’t shake the feeling of being unwelcome. Although the food itself was acceptable, the service fell far below the standards expected of a fine-dining French restaurant—especially in Japan, where hospitality is typically exceptional. As non-Japanese-speaking tourists, we were clearly treated differently. The staff seemed disinterested, and we felt like an inconvenience rather than valued guests. At the end of the meal, a staff member asked who the birthday guest was. For a moment, we thought they had read our email and were about to do something thoughtful—perhaps a small gesture like a cake or a birthday greeting. Instead, he returned minutes later only to tell us the restaurant was closing and to settle the bill. The payment process was also poorly handled. We were advised to use Suica, but the transaction failed due to the card limit—a basic issue the cashier seemed unaware of. We had to split the payment into smaller amounts while the staff looked visibly worried, adding more discomfort to an already strained evening. For a so-called high-end French restaurant in Japan, the lack of hospitality, poor communication, and overall disregard for guests was shocking. Not worth the money, not worth the experience. Avoid if you value service and respect. They will mess up your reservations and mock you. I did rather eat at a basic ramen shop.

Angélique Hirosaki Store is a refined bakery housed in a box-shaped building, offering an array of delectable cakes, pies, and pastries for both dine-in and take-out. Established in 1907, this mochi rice cake shop is renowned for its beloved 'kujiramochi,' made with high-quality ingredients and crafted without preservatives or additives.
Apple tart / pie, Hirosaki Pom were both great. It was more of a tart laced with sugar coating. It’s crispy and flaky, apple slices were crunchy. The Pom was like cake with large cubes of apple. Just as good. However the name of the shop has been changed to Grand Merci.

As a baker myself, I always appreciate exceptional pastries. And the ladies who run Hanamaru are not only incredibly kind, their love flows into their apple pies as well. I was overwhelmed by how delicious these apple pies were, especially the fuji apples. Even their coffee tasted like love. Hands down one two of the best apple pies in Hirosaki. Nestled along National Route 260, Takahashi Chuka Soba is a must-visit ramen shop that draws in crowds daily. While parking can be a challenge due to its popularity, the experience is well worth it. The menu is refreshingly straightforward, featuring just four options: Chinese noodles, Zaru Chinese noodles, Char Siu noodles, and rice. Renowned ramen critic Ishiyama-san has even endorsed this gem, with an article proudly displayed near the ticket machine.
A bowl of ramen that truly exemplifies Aomori niboshi ramen. Niboshi is a small dried sardine, and as you can imagine they pack a punch of seafood flavor. The broth at Takahashi incorporates the niboshi seafood punch, without the bitter or fishiness that typically comes with it. Paired with the noodles, chashu, menma, and green onion, the bowl is an excellent balance of flavor. I came with a party of 3 on a weekday for lunch just around opening. We had rented a car, so getting to the restaurant was not difficult. The shop has a parking lot so you don't have to worry about parking. There was a little bit of a line, it goes by quick. You first purchase a ticket at the vending machine. There are really only two ramen options, and the rest are additional toppings or different sizes. You give the tickets then to the waitress and once you are seated the ramen comes out in a couple of minutes. Overall Takahashi Chukasoba is a great stop for all ramen lovers out there. It's different from your typical tonkotsu, shoyu, and miso ramen, but it is absolutely worth it to try if you are ever in Hirosaki.

A ramen noodles restaurant in Hirosaki famous for its soup made from niboshi (dried sardines). Rumour had it that the queue was long even after 13.00, I visited around 14.00, but the parking lot was relatively empty. Pay by machine to enter. The soup is indeed a strong broth of niboshi dashi. It has a unique flavour that I don't dislike, but there are probably more than a few people who don't like it. The noodles are not the thin and frizzy ones often seen in the area, but slightly thicker. I enjoyed it very much anyhow.

The dried sardine flavor was strong, but not too strong, and the umami was well-balanced. It was a little salty, but that's Tsugaru ramen. Before I knew it, I'd finished the soup. The noodles were chewy and didn't overwhelm the soup. The pork slices were thin but well-seasoned, making them more of a main dish than a side dish. The bamboo shoots also had a strong presence, making the overall bowl well-balanced. The only thing I thought was that the green onions were a bit pricey. There was a line at lunchtime, but the turnover was fast. The parking lot was large and easy to access. With this quality and price, this might be a restaurant worth visiting if you visit Aomori. Personally, this bowl made me think, "This is what dried sardines should be like." Five stars, no hesitation.

I got off at Nadeushiko Station on my train journey from Hirosaki to Aomori. It's less than a five-minute walk from the station. Purchase a meal ticket at the entrance and hand it to the staff. Cash only. Since it was a weekday, the restaurant had a laid-back atmosphere, and I was seated without any waiting time. The ramen was served within 5-10 minutes of ordering. Water is self-service. This time I had the Chinese noodles. It was my first time trying sardine ramen, and I was blown away by the aroma and umami, as if roasted sardines had been crushed and dissolved into the soup. The cloudy white soup is soy sauce-based, with a mellow yet deep flavor. The smooth, curly noodles were a perfect match for the soup. The char siu pork and green onions also brought the dish together nicely. It was also impressive to see the customer next to me order rice and enjoy it with the soup. By the way, I missed the 13:48 train from Nadeushiko Station, so the next train to Aomori wasn't until 15:33, so I got off at 13:09 and only had about 40 minutes to enjoy my meal, but I had plenty of time to savor it. It's close to the station and easily accessible, and it's a great way to experience Aomori's dried sardine culture. If you're travelling between Hirosaki and Aomori, this is a restaurant I would definitely recommend stopping off along the way to visit. Zaru chuka soba, cold, so naturally It took a little longer to boil, and the bowl arrived about 3 minutes late. The chuka soba was delicious as it was, just like dried sardine ramen. Of course, whether the dried sardine flavor is strong or weak is a matter of personal preference. I took it as this restaurant's ramen, and it was just as good as it gets. The zaru chuka soba was completely different from the so-called tsukemen I've had a few times. It really felt like I was eating Japanese soba. There was even wasabi in the dipping sauce... It was a chuka soba that I couldn't quite describe. It had a bit of an over-the-top feel, and I like it. It was delicious. Tastes and preferences vary. Thank you for the meal... (Translated by Google) This may be an exaggeration, but the niboshi ramen's soup explodes with the delicious flavor of niboshi in your mouth, the medium-thick noodles settle it nicely, and finally the char siu adds a nice chewy texture. It's a great ramen, but the char siu noodles have too much char siu, so they could reduce the price a little, or it would be even better if they added a soft-boiled egg on top. There was often a line of 20-30 people, but they were all gone in about 20 minutes. The shop was spacious and it was a nice ramen shop. I think it's worth trying at least once.
