Nasu-machi

Nasu is a town in Japan’s Kantō region, northeast of Tokyo. It sits at the foot of Mount Nasu, a group of volcanoes in the Nikkō National Park featuring hiking trails and a pedestrian suspension bridge with forest views. The town is known for Nasu Imperial Villa and Nasu Onsen, its natural hot springs in the Nasu Kōgen highlands, now a resort area that comprises traditional and modern Japanese bathhouses.

Amusement park
Theme park
Nasu Highland Park is a family-friendly amusement park nestled in the Nasu Highlands, offering an array of attractions and rides suitable for visitors of all ages. With over 40 attractions, including eight large roller coasters and various entertainment options such as live music and animal encounters, the park promises a full day of fun. Set against the backdrop of the Nasu Mountains and Kanto Plains, this expansive park features intertwined roller coasters, water rides, and a 3D theater.
Nice small theme park. Decent rides for a smaller park, crowds during a school day (week day) were essentially zero. Zero to 5 minute wait for all rides.
Dave A — Google review
Arriving at 12 and leaving at 5 we were able to do most of the larger rides aswell as the newer indoor attractions. We could get on each coaster in less than 20minutes, some just walk up and get on. They are decent coasters, alittle old so you feel more impact compared to newer tech. Food was good junk food but alittle pricey. Overall a fun trip and nice scenery.

every penny worth. I visited on Summer holiday. Must recommended. I visited USJ, Yomiuri land, but I was tired of waiting in queue. but here my kids enjoyed thoroughly just with few min of Queue. Luckily I got opportunity to see the fire crackers.
Mubarak A — Google review
Amusement park in a really pretty setting. 8 coaster at this park but only 6 were open for my visit. I did check the schedule beforehand and didn't see any coasters closed, so that was a little but disappointing. Long lines for food at lunchtime due to a few school/college groups. Lots of attractions for everyone to do, including a big wheel, shot tower and double decker carousel. A huge gift shop near the entrance with a few gacha machines too! I bought my tickets in the day at the entrance and didn't queue to get in. So many dogs! Being a dog friendly park, lots of people take advantage of this! So cute. There are also attractions in the park dogs can do, they are well catered for.

Nasu Highland Park is a great park to create experiences like never before that will open the wonderful creative minds of many. The attractions and mazes create a diverse, appealing landscape across many ages! The thrill rides like Big Boom have many elements that create many interesting roller coasters! Although, getting to Nasushiobara by Shinkansen then to the park by an 1:30 hr bus, it is very comfortable and convenient overall! The laser attraction where the deck of cards is, has a laser room that will satisfy the needs of everybody due to the hilarious people that hit the lasers like Audrey Bui and the length of the ride! Have a great day at Nasu Highland Park!!!
Roman T — Google review
Great park in a remote area. Unique and fun rides. Lacks a modern standout ride, but still has some charm with some of its oddities. Like most parks in Japan, the safety routines are over the top, and can hinder operations. Standout attractions would be Big Boom, a oddball coaster with a steep drop and large camelback into a vertical loop. Also has a nice double Decker carousel and a cable driven observation wheel.
Jacob O — Google review
I had so much fun at this place! Different kinds of attractions there..I visited there during holiday so the place was jampacked with people. Good to choose unlimited ride if you will go there during weekdays or else you will wait in line for more than an hour. But still I had a very enjoyable day there and hope to visit again soon.

Nasuhai is a little bit chilly because you are on highlands, great view too, other than that you can just easily explore the place in one day, kids will surely benefit the fantasy pass set ticket, they can ride and play all day whichever they want.

Museums
Nasu Stained Glass Museum is the largest of its kind in Japan, featuring antique stained glass from the 19th century. The museum is housed in a stone building designed to resemble an English manor house, creating a serene atmosphere for visitors. In addition to admiring the beautiful stained glass displays, guests can enjoy concerts on weekends and even participate in a stained glass craft experience to create their own unique key chains.
Nice place to visit. There is also a workshop that you can hand-on to practice your skill
Albert H — Google review
The Victorian Era vibes was amazing, you can buy a lot of great souvenirs. Great quality products and overall beautiful pieces of stained glass.
Angel G — Google review
Lovely property that looks like a medieval mansion combined with a church. The beautiful stained glass windows are of course a joy to see. In addition, you can hear an old music box play and a live pipe organ in the church. Stained glass lamp works are also available for purchase.
Yuko — Google review
The ticket does not worth the price. Only similar lamp design displayed. Colorful windows and English style decorations. The shop sells products made with glass and related to the church but does not worth shopping there deliberately. Great spot for shooting outside of the church like other churches. A workshop for glass accessory (requires 40-60min) but the designs are not quite attractive. Overall, not recommended. Felt like a scam for the ticket and travelled by bus for it :( But if you go by car, and have other attractions to go nearby, great place for some pictures.
Monique L — Google review
It's modern stained glass, I was expecting them to be medieval works. The place was on the upper side of the hill, so it took efforts biking there. But the calm athmostphere and some orgel and pipe organ performance do make the place nice to visit.
Hana T — Google review
An old church with stained glass windows. Pipe Organ concert every 30 minutes or so. Also other recitals in crypt. They have various lamps to sell as well.
Marlene Y — Google review
Very pretty place and definitely worth a look. However Westerners might find it a bit odd that so many Christian religious items, imagery and replicas are used for the sole purpose of admiring and selling stained glass.

Zoo
Nasu Animal Kingdom is a unique zoo and farm combination located in a scenic farmland area. It offers interactive experiences, captivating animal performances, and hands-on exhibits that set it apart from traditional zoos. Visitors can interact with various animals such as rabbits, kangaroos, alpacas, penguins, and seals. The renowned bird performance where birds fly inches above visitors' heads is particularly exciting for children.
Love this place. The shows are excellent! Good balance of learning and entertainment. The bird show in particular had a lot of wow factor as the birds flew in barely over the heads of the audience. More immersive exhibits compared to other zoos I've been to. The wetlands and rainforest enclosures especially. Marmosets and lemurs wander around (seemingly) freely and the sloths are cage free. This adds a good touch of excitement to moving through the park. Feeding events/ opportunities are also great. Feed penguins and a seal at 300 yen (3 small pieces of fish) also you can buy feed for the otters and ducks. Restaurants are as expected a little expensive but surprisingly good quality and portions. Also some animals walk around the park with their handlers and you can touch them. Skunk! Anteater! Tortoise! Love this place, will certainly go again.
Adrian S — Google review
This zoo is absolutely amazing! The entire place is clean and well-maintained, and all the animals look healthy and full of energy. It’s clear they are very well cared for. There are plenty of small animal feeding shows that kids absolutely love. The on-site restaurants serve delicious food, making it easy to spend the whole day here. Weekdays are less crowded, and even on rainy days, the covered areas are so well designed that the fun never stops! Highly recommend for families.
Cerise — Google review
On the day we went sightseeing in Nikko from Tokyo, we visited this zoo at our daughter’s request to see capybaras. The capybaras were calm, and we all fed them leaves. Some were even soaking in a hot bath. Although we only stayed for about 45 minutes due to time constraints, we were able to see many rare animals. Not only Miss daughter, but the whole members of my client family was happy.
ITokyoTravel-iTokyoDrive T — Google review
I went here last year and it was terrible. Im not a zoo person in general because I love animals but I was taken here by my cousin. I saw two seals that were in an extremely small area with barely any water; there was just enough for them to submerge their body — not swim. The water looked very murky and green. I also saw what I think was a reindeer. The hooves of the adult reindeer were definitely way too long and needed trimming. It also looked like it was on the semi malnourished side. I was able to see some of its ribs. I'm not a vet or anything but i've always loved animals and I have studied about them through many videos and all I know is none of this felt right to me. I felt very heartbroken for the animals. The kangaroo looked very depressed in the corner and I'm really hoping they let it out at some point every day because that is not a big enclosure at all. Same with the reindeer. I also saw a tiger which I dont have a picture of but I swear, its enclosure was way too small. It kept pacing back and forth repeatedly, and books/videos have told me that usually means the tiger is either stressed, bored or frustrated. I wouldnt want to waste a penny on buying a ticket for this zoo. I personally do NOT want to support this.
Rina T — Google review
This zoo is low quality and perhaps the worst zoo I've been to in Japan for what they charge. Ueno Zoo charges 600¥ and has a way larger variety of animals. We went on a week day, no crowds and STILL could not see the cat show because of full capacity inside? How does this zoo not account for that? There is plenty of surrounding area to provide suitable seating for paying customers, especially on a day with not many people around. Overall, this zoo is expensive for no variety.
Vinny F — Google review
Went on a weekend, not very crowded. A hidden spot with little foreign tourists. Great place to bring young children on a family trip. Many attractions to observe the animals up close, with many events held at different timings. Lots of enclosures that allow for visitors to feed the animals for 100 yen. The park is very large and split into 2 parts. The second part visitors can take a free bus or pay to ride a tractor and Chairlift. It would be good to drive there since public transport is scarce.
Neo C — Google review
Great place. They need to update some of the animal enclosures. Some are too small for the animals. The bird show is absolutely amazing! Parking price was a bit crazy. I had a very fun time

Well maintained. Clean and tidy. Could see animals up close. The only blemish was no free parking and ¥1000 paid upfront.

Mountain peak
Nestled in the foothills of Nasu, Mt. Chausu offers a range of walking trails and trekking routes suitable for all levels of hikers. The area is also home to the Nasu Yuzen Shrine, dedicated to the god of onsen, making it a pilgrimage site for hot spring enthusiasts. Visitors can take the scenic Nasu Ropeway to reach the 9th summit of Mount Chausu at 1915 meters, offering breathtaking views.
We took the ropeway right next to the bus stop to the top of the mountain. However, to get to the summit from the ropeway station where we arrived, we had to go the hard way. Some of the others gave up on the way to the summit. In short, we enjoyed our little adventure! The views at the summit are quite spectacular. We then descended the mountain from a different direction than the ropeway station. The variety of trails convinced us that it's worth climbing this mountain again and again!

Im not an avid climber so it was a bit of a challenging climb. However, I did make it to the top in about a few hours. I am physically active so it may be more challenging for those who don’t go out much and but want a fun mountain to climb. The views from the top are worth it!

Little rocky and can be a bit slippery and difficult to climb in some areas but the view was worth it. Definitely not as crowded as Mt Fuji so it feels closer to nature.

(Translated by Google) Visited November 18, 2025 The forecast was for cloudy skies, but upon arrival, it was snowing. The first ropeway departure was at 8:30, but due to a suspension, we departed at 9:00. We were the only ones climbing, so we had the trail all to ourselves! It was dangerous, so we proceeded with caution, but it was a great experience, as we were able to see views that you wouldn't normally see on a beginner's course! Bakery
Penny Lane Bakery Cafe is a charming spot located in Nasu, surrounded by woods and featuring an abundance of Beatles memorabilia. The bakery offers a fantastic selection of breads and treats, making it a great place to stop by if you're in the area. However, it's not necessarily worth a long drive as the food is just okay.
Great Bread, But Be Ready for the Crowd! Stopped by Bakery Cafe Penny Lane in Nasu on a Saturday afternoon, and the curry bread was the real star—crispy, flavorful, and just perfect! Everything else I got was delicious too, though the melon pan was a bit too sweet for me, with a lot of sugar on top. It reminded me of something I’ve had from a convenience store or supermarket, so it wasn’t as special as I hoped. The outdoor vibe is really nice and chill, perfect for relaxing with a coffee. But inside? Super tight space and pretty crowded. I had a hard time picking what to get because people were lining up really close behind me, waiting for their turn. You basically need to decide what you want before you even get to the bread section—no time for browsing! Still, the bread selection is awesome, and everything looked so good. Just be ready for the rush, and you’ll have a great time!

A Must-Visit for Beatles Fans! Discover the Beatles-Themed Cafe in Nasu This cafe in Nasu is a hotspot for anyone who loves the Beatles. Everything from the background music to the merchandise and displays is inspired by the Fab Four. I visited on a weekday morning and it was already bustling with activity; you can expect even longer lines on weekends. Unfortunately, the chiffon cake and coffee I ordered didn’t meet my expectations. This might have been due to the number of new staff working in April, which seemed to affect the service quality. However, if you’re on the hunt for Beatles merchandise, this place is a treasure trove. With a wide variety of T-shirts and shirts available, any fan would find something to love. While the food might not be the highlight, the merchandise alone makes it worth a visit for enthusiasts. Nasu has plenty of other great dining options if you’re looking for a meal. But if you’re a Beatles fan, just soaking in the cafe’s themed atmosphere is an experience not to be missed.

Very nice restaurant in lovely surroundings. I had the Tochigi beef steak which was delicious. The creamed potatoes and roasted vegetables that came with the steak were also lovely. My wife had the beef stew which was also great and the beef was perfectly braised and not at all dried out. Portion size is generous meaning I didn't need to have ordered the chips side dish. We sat on the terrace which is dotted with trees and dog friendly. Of course, the music and decor is all Beatles related so a must for any fans of the band. Would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Nasu. Be warned - make a reservation on weekends and holidays.
John R — Google review
No wonder it’s such a popular place! The lines are packed with people, but the on-site organization is excellent, and there are even security guards directing the parking. If you’re only buying bread, you can grab it and then head over to the café across the street—also part of Penny Lane—to enjoy it there.
Cerise — Google review
I don't get the hype, but the place is nice. Bakery products are good, atmosphere is nice, food is okay. Not worth the drive as a destination on its own, but if you're in the area it's a good option to stop by. Oh, and listen to the other reviews telling you to skip the burger: it's actually a Japanese-style "hanbagu" (read: sweet mix of pork and beef), only served in a bun. It's not bad, but it's quite specific and not something most people would expect.
Travelling M — Google review
We came for lunch and it was great comfort food. We had fondue and seafood gratin. We also picked up some fresh baked products at the bakery. There was limited parking but no wait. There are many floor level changes so access is limited. Limited disability parking is available in front. Beatles galore
Chad M — Google review
Arrived at 9:30 am on a Saturday and all the parking spaces were full and we had to wait. Finally got a spot and went to the bakery. The bread was good but not worth all the hype. We did not use the cafe etc as the lines were too long. Plenty of outdoor seating was available.
M. S — Google review
This is a themed cafe around The Beatles and they have a lot of memorabilia and souvenirs (expensive but they pay royalties). I think the most famous piece is a signed guitar in the cafe section. There's quite a lot of parking but since they are so popular, it gets full quickly. The cafe and bakery are separate. If you want to go to the cafe, you need to put your name down and get in the queue. We only waited about 10 minutes for a table for 4. Food-wise, I'd recommend something that includes their bread. Their bakery has an amazing selection; their most popular is a loaf of bread with blueberry jam swirled in it. Their other bread is good too though.

A Cowherd is a renowned grill house known for its top-quality wagyu steaks and hamburgers, served alongside flavorful garlic rice, in a vibrant and open atmosphere. Located amidst the natural beauty of forests and mountains, it stands out among other restaurants offering NASU beef steak. While the prices are on the expensive side, patrons agree that the steak at A Cowherd is truly exceptional and ranks among the best they have ever had.
I went with the family, the food is great for adults and kids, ordered the beef stew and beef curry, both were delicious. The meat is really tender, the service is great and it's surrounded by the forest, and mountain. Just nice. The prices are very fair for what they offer, I would come again for sure in the future. This is one of the best restaurants in the Nasu area. They really care about their service, quality of food, and overall environment was top notch. They went above and beyond to make accomodations for our group. Yes, there was a little bit of a wait, but it was well organized, and we felt good waiting for a table. Solid steak restaurant. The meat was good but the garlic rice wasn’t all that. It wasn’t like having a nice piece of garlic bread; it was an intense garlic flavor that wasn’t savory. I could have done without it. Note: For dinner, it’s probably best to make a reservation.

While the restaurant opens at 11:00 AM, a sign is placed in front of the restaurant from 10:00 AM, where you fill out a form and wait (advance reservations are not accepted). Thanks to my friend's early arrival and the fact that she filled it out, we were the fourth in line to be called in! Over 30 people were waiting before the restaurant opened, and the staff informed us that anyone arriving around 12:30 would have to wait an hour and a half. 😵 This time, we ordered the "Pokopen Zen" and "Onago Zen" meals, along with individual a la carte dishes of bean paste mochi and kinako mochi. (Translated by Google) I'd always wanted to try this restaurant. My company's retreat is in Nasu, and it's too early after breakfast, and they don't serve it before dinner, so I never had the chance. Finally, I finally made it. I'd heard they'd start signing in at 10:00 AM, so I arrived a little after 9:00 AM. There were already two groups of customers ahead of me. By 11:00 AM, when the restaurant opened, there was a substantial line. There must have been over 100 people there. Even on a weekday, my wife and I sat in the back of the room, and I ordered the Pekopon Set meal, and my wife ordered the Onago Set meal. Perhaps because there was a third customer, our food arrived relatively quickly. It felt like a purely Japanese country lunch. See the photo for the menu. The flavor was light, yet exquisite. It's easy to see why they have so many repeat customers, and I'd confidently recommend it to friends. It's a restaurant I'd definitely visit again next time I visit Nasu.

Thanks to going early, I was able to park in the parking lot near the restaurant. However, there was a line of people. At 10am, the wedding board was brought out, so we wrote our names down and waited in the car. At 11am, we were called in order and shown to our seats. The photos show the "Pokopenzen" and "Grandma's Suiton." When I looked at the menu, I wondered if the portions would be large, but I ate them all up and they were gone. If you like steamed rice or mochi, you should definitely go. I'd like to go again next year! (Translated by Google) This is a restaurant in an old house where you can enjoy chewy glutinous rice okowa (steamed rice with rice) and freshly pounded mochi (rice cakes) cooked in a hagama pot (^^) *It seems to be always crowded, so it's best to leave plenty of time ◎ If you're focusing on sightseeing, you'll probably spend more time here than you think. *Most of the seats require you to take off your shoes before entering. Be careful if you're not good at walking or if your shoes are difficult to put on and take off. The restaurant has both tatami seating and table seating, and it looks like the table seats in the dirt floor just inside the entrance are wheelchair and stroller accessible upon request. Soup full of dashi and flavor, stews, chewy okowa (steamed rice cakes), and mochi (rice cakes). Everything was absolutely delicious. I love mochi, so I ordered the mochi all-you-can-eat meal without hesitation. The mochi gets hard quickly, so you have to eat it quickly. Be careful if you eat slowly. If you want to take your time, I recommend soup with rice cakes in it, as they will keep the rice cakes warm and moist, allowing you to enjoy the soft rice cakes until the very end (^^)! Even if you think the portion size is too much, they will provide you with a pack to take home. Tea, cold water, packs, etc. are available in the self-service corner, so you can prepare them yourself if you need them. This is a very popular restaurant, so they anticipate that they will be busy and unable to provide personal service. I am really grateful (^^)! I also feel bad about having to call the busy staff over and over again, but it is also a little stressful when you don't have what you need when you need it, right? Although they seemed busy, the staff were kind and polite when serving you (^^) It was a very, very satisfying meal. Thank you for the meal (^^) (Original)

(Translated by Google) On Saturday, we were the 12th group there, 40 minutes before opening. You can write on the waiting board from about an hour before opening ♫ Reservations are not possible. The restaurant is set in an old house, giving it the atmosphere of a rural grandma's house ♫ It matches the food very well ♡ It makes you feel nostalgic. The menu is detailed on the website. Seasonal menus are also introduced, so it's a good idea to check it out before visiting. They also have an Instagram account. I wanted to eat both okowa and mochi, so I ordered the Anpontan set. Instead of seasonal okowa, I asked them to change it to gomoku okowa ♪ The dessert was supposed to be warabi mochi, but it was brown sugar warabi mochi. The kenchinjiru soup was full of flavor, the chewy okowa, and the soft mochi were all very delicious! The stew was full of flavor ♡ I finished everything, and it was a pretty voluminous set. Even if you can't finish it, there are free takeaway packs available, so don't worry. I was thinking of buying some manju from the menu to take home, but I was surprised at how big they were! I wanted to buy four, but two was enough! PayPay is available♫ The staff was kind and polite. I was full and very satisfied♪ I'll come back in a different season. Thank you for the meal!

(Translated by Google) Not only is the taste amazing, but the price is also the best value for money 😁 I love okowa and have been interested in it for a while, but this was my first time visiting ☺️ I thought it over carefully beforehand and ordered the Usaburo set meal this time It was served in about 10 minutes, and the tempo was GOOD The okowa was of course excellent, but the stew had a great flavor ☺️ I live in the countryside and my aunt's stews are excellent, so I was surprised at how well it gave off that feeling 😁 Maybe it was because of the atmosphere, but if I could drink sake here, I'd have no complaints 🍶 Moreover, the overall volume was much more than I expected, so 1400 yen for this is cheap I can see why it's so popular☺️ However, it would have been really great if I could have changed the kenchin to water dumplings for an extra 200 yen or so😂 Next time, I'm thinking about changing the water dumplings to Pokopenzen🤔 I'll definitely visit again☺️ If you're having trouble deciding on lunch, this is a restaurant I definitely recommend!! By the way Credit cards and electronic money can only be used with PayPay The day I visited was Sunday, and I was the sixth in line at 9:30. *57 groups at 10:50 I recommend coming early, signing your name on the waiting board, and then taking a stroll around the nearby roadside station (about 10 minutes one way) I arrived at 9:30 on Saturday, and there were a few people in the parking lot, and I was the sixth in line at 10 o'clock to sign my name on the waiting board☺️ 10 minutes before opening, there were about 60 groups, or 120 people (Original) 味もさることながら、このお値段はコスパ最強では😁 おこわが大好きで以前から気になっていたのですが今回初めて訪問しました☺️ 事前に熟慮しておいて今回は卯三郎膳を注文 大体10分程で配膳され、テンポもGOOD おこわは勿論絶品でしたが、煮物がいい味だしてますね☺️ 当方、田舎住みで親戚の叔母の煮物が絶品なのですが、その感じを少し醸し出すレベルで驚きました😁 雰囲気と相まって、そう感じたのかもしれませんがこれで日本酒やれたら言う事無しです🍶 しかも、全体のボリュームが思ったよりずっと多くて、これで1400円なら安いですね 人気の理由もわかります☺️ ただ、どうせならプラス200円とかで良いのでけんちんを水団にできたらホントに最高だった😂 今度は、ぽこぺん膳の水団変更か迷うところです🤔 絶対再訪問します☺️ ランチで迷っているなら絶対オススメのお店ですよ!!

Udon noodle restaurant
Arriving 15 minutes before opening on a weekday, I visited the udon noodle restaurant They have an interesting system where you wait at the reception desk to write your name. The orders arrived quickly, within 15 minutes of placing them. Their dessert set is a great deal, with plenty of delicious fruits included. For the main dish, I chose their bukkake udon with homemade tofu and maitake mushrooms.
Famous local restaurant that serves huge bowls of tasty udon noodles with many locally made specialties such as homemade tofu, yuba, local yuzu, and more. You might need to wait a bit, but it's worth it. Also, the deserts were awesome!! Did not expect that in an udon place.

The most hugest udon portion that I ever see! We ordered hot and cold udon for trying their signature udon but I couldn’t really remember what are the names of the udon 😂 Btw these udon taste so damn good 👍🏻 even the udon shop can serve nice desserts such as creme bulee and pudding with ice cream 🍨🥰

Deeelicous!! They’re known for their homemade udon and freshly made tofu. I recommend the bukkakeudon with tofu and tsuyu you pour over. It comes with fresh seasonal ingredients - we had maitake today. All with some greens drizzled with olive oil. Presentation is beautiful too. Staff could be a bit friendlier but with the long lines, we appreciated that they were very efficient and quick. Thank you.

Family run restaurant. Welcoming and smiling people. Good food , Japanese of course. Nice to see this area in late autumn observing the leaves falling down slowly and sweetly from the window of this little restaurant.

(Translated by Google) This restaurant is located in Nasu, Tochigi Prefecture. The smooth noodles and firm, chewy texture are truly impressive! Above all, the chicken tempura is flavorful and, as you can see in the photo, gorgeous and filling—highly recommended! It was fluffy and juicy, a unique flavor! It's a must-try dish, paired with udon noodles. 🌟 If you're visiting northern Tochigi Prefecture, this is the place to go for healthy udon! Be prepared to wait in line as this is a popular restaurant!
