Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Jindaiji Temple, a historic Buddhist temple founded in 733 and rebuilt in 1919, is one of Tokyo's oldest temples. Nestled in the serene surroundings of Chofu City, it features several temple buildings surrounded by lush gardens and thriving trees. The area around the temple is filled with the sound of clear-water streams and traditional Japanese-style food stalls, eateries, and shops.
I came to area to visit temple and look at flowers in the botanical garden. I went on Monday which was a poor idea as the botanical garden rests on Monday. But for the temple, it was fully open with lots to see. In the back was shrine with ceremonies commencing, lots of flowers and trees were in full bloom, and the entrance to the temple was filled with lots of stores selling tasty snacks like shaved ice, and fried mochi. The temple was quite nice and quiet, a great place to relax and enjoy nature. Next time I will have to visit on a Tuesday or Thursday in order to visit the garden. Next time

This temple is not only a place for devotion . It also have some green parts all around the temple complex which is great from end of April. You can sit down on a bench near a carved Buddha on a rock, dwelling on a cave where believers comes to address some prayers. There is also a botanical park nearby which I not yet been. My main interest was to see around the remain of a Uesugi fortress nearby which I fail as it was late and too crowded. You can go there by bicycle from Kichijoji or Mitaka station BTW if you can and also by bus, a 20-30 min ride. There is also a lot soba (buckwheat noodles) restaurant with long lines if you happen to be there on a sunny day during Golden week in early May. I guess it’s one delicacy as it seems very popular. This place is worth seeing if you are looking for something that looks like traditional and historical.

Lovely temple located in a quiet neighbourhood. There's a path you can walk which brings you to the Botanic Garden. The temple is not that big but there are many points of interests to check out, look at the map. Don't miss out on the dango and soba (their specialty which you don't wanna miss).
Maruli L — Google review
Large temple complex with interesting elements if you’re interested in Japanese religions. It’s connected to the nearby Jindai botanical gardens and they can be enjoyed together. Many souvenirs shops and restaurants outside the temple. It’s quite far from the nearby train station but there’s quite frequently a bus.
Matan K — Google review
Such a beautiful and historically significant Temple. The grounds are so beautiful with the botanical garden being adjacent. There's also good food that is both delicious and affordable out around the area. There are free maps with historical information for those who are interested.

A wonderful place becoming more popular with the tourist so not as tranquil as I would have imagined but still great place to spend a few hours.
Kim R — Google review
Live it so much to be here. Peaceful place when still morning. Quite a lot of Japanese locals. So many soba-ya. You can also join a Buddhist prayer over here. Cost ¥3000.

Nice tempel at the outer part of tokio. Was a really nice change of pace compared to the masses of people. We were there when there was some kind of celebration for the children what was really cool to see. Also maybe saw a handful of other tourists the whole day. If you need to get out of busy tokio, this lovely spot just 45 min outside is the perfect thing to do.

Nature & Parks
Jindai Botanical Gardens is a renowned attraction in Tokyo, Japan, offering a diverse collection of plant species. Originally part of a 1500s fortress, the area became famous for its plant growth and was later designated as a preserve for botanical specimens after World War II. Visitors can admire beautiful irises at the entrance and explore around 4,500 varieties of trees and shrubs throughout the year.
Beautiful all year round, especially during plum festival, sakura season, rose festival, chrysanthemum festival, etc. Large begonias bloom all year round inside the greenhouse. I highly recommend this botanical gardens. They usually close on Mondays, but it's better to check their website before each visit, because sometimes they close several days for maintenance.

Visited on 16 Nov 25. The Crystheanthum and roses were beautiful and so we're the permanent exhibit flowers in the green house. The description are very nice And arr available in English as well.

Commute via bus is convenient. Cards and cash payments accepted. They provide umbrellas during rainy days. Their pamphlets also come in various languages. Visited on Oct 25, roses were in bloom, so many varieties, and you’d literally be able to smell the flowers. Fragrant, colorful, and diverse. Worth visiting also is the greenhouse. Various tropical plants, fruit bearing plants, and etc. Staff are attentive and overall the place is well maintained. Beautiful seedlings can be purchased.
Carlissa A — Google review
It is autum but there are still many beautiful roses. Inside the glasshouse there are various of plants and floder. A very calm and nice place.
Betina C — Google review
This botanical garden is huge. I went during the plum flower season, there were so many beautiful trees. The plum flowers were pink, red, white, yellow. The trees were labelled. Overall, it was really good to see these plum flowers. There are other flowers as well like roses but you have to go during the season. I went in February and could only see the plum flowers. There is also a greenhouse that has a variety of plants that can be found in warm countries like India. I love plants, so I absolutely enjoyed this place. There are all sorts of plants from papaya trees to insectivorous plants. There are also rooms of orchids and other beautiful flowers. Outside the garden, there are shrines, restaurants and shops. You can renter as many times as you want as long as you show the ticket at the counter. I absolutely loved this place and would recommend it to anyone who loves flora and fauna!

Visited on May 24, 2023. Mainly went to see the rose garden but the entire park is so beautiful. Rose garden looks stunning in the afternoon due to sunlight. I spent the whole day here relaxing and walking into nature. Entry fee is ¥500. There is a bus from Chofu station that goes to the park.
Ananya T — Google review
A beautiful botanical gardens in the suburbs n so happened the season was for begonias which were flowering beautifully this spring. Quite a large garden so be prepared to spend about 2 hours plus for a stroll n view. There is also a large hot house with several interesting exhibits- ponds with various lilies n a large cacti exhibits. Also an impressive blooming of begonias n other flowering plants. Entrance fees are minimal and it’s an interesting garden for those who are botanically inclined or just the average person who loves colourful blooms. Thumbs up for this beautiful gardens n a truly wonderful Spring time stroll 👍 recommended for those with children and note also the delicious restaurants n food outlets within short walking distance ( first class soba 🍜 😋 n great Dashi n tempura)
MeT — Google review
Easily one of the top 5 parks in Tokyo, and probably the only one with English descriptions of the flowers and their history. The greenhouse is very interesting, and it's incredible to see how they have managed to create an environment for so many diverse flowers to grow. I went during the Golden Week to see the Rose Festival and was surprised to see such an incredible variety of just the flower rose. The whole park is quite spacious, and one can easily spend a whole afternoon here.

Chōfu Station is a gateway to the charming Chofu and Fuchu areas, known for their natural beauty, temples, sports, horseracing, and delectable cuisine. The station itself is adorned with decorations related to a famous movie, adding an interesting touch to the interior. This area has witnessed significant changes throughout its history. The station boasts numerous dining options on the top floor and various shops including a bakery and grocery store on the ground floor.
Chōfu blooms with art and memory. Toei Animation’s spirit lingers in the air, while nearby Jindaiji Temple wraps visitors in moss and incense. It’s a city of film and faith, rhythm and rest — a fitting pause before the mountains call. Tourist Tip: Major hub with transfers to Sagamihara Line. Visit Jindaiji Temple, soba restaurants, and Toei Animation Museum. Excellent hotels and dining near the station. A soft midpoint between Tokyo’s edge and its heart.

They have a large number of restaurants on the top floor including a decent Korean place and a decent conveyer sushi place. The ground floor also features a decent bakery and a grocery store. There's a Keio store and ATMs in the basement but those tend to run out of cash quick on the weekends. There's also a florist.

Ajinomoto Stadium, located just two stations west of Chofu station, is a 49,970-seat stadium and the home field for F.C.Tokyo and Tokyo Verdy. The stadium is known for its green initiatives such as solar panels and wind power. In addition to sporting events, Ajinomoto Stadium hosts concerts and flea markets.
Packed today for the Tokyo FC game. Easy to get to although it’s a little ways out. Toilets everywhere and easy to follow directions. Helpful guides everywhere! Highly HIGHLY recommend a football (or Soccer) match if you can get tickets!!

The home stadium of FC Tokyo and Tokyo Verdy. It has over 40,000 seats and is convenient near from Keio railway Tobitakyu Station.
K2 — Google review
Facilities are fine but watching the game in the stadium is very simple. They don’t show live the game in their TVs. If there is a penalty you won’t get a review. If there is a VAR you will just be lost with what’s going on. The introduction in the beginning also pretty simple. Because I have watched soccer games in different stadiums I think I feel like this one is kinda simple. Food is the usual price of any stadium.

Kitaro Chaya is a charming establishment located near the tranquil Shindaiji Temple in Chofu City, Tokyo. It is a delightful fusion of a gallery, gift shop, and cafe that pays homage to the popular manga series GeGeGe no Kitaro.
My son loves Gegege no Kitaro! This place was awesome with so many hidden details all over the shop. Kitaro goods are hard to find, so this place was a gold mine. I love that there were photo spots around and in the shop. Definitely recommend it! Unfortunately we didn’t make it to the cafe in time. The cafe accepts customers only up to 4:30pm and closes at 5pm. The gift shop was such a treasure to explore.

This is a Cafe and a Kitaro character goods shop. It's a very cute place with many goods and souvenirs too. I'd like to go again to get something for a local souvenirs next time. The Cafe menu is Kitaro themed also and very cute 😍 I loved the whole street as well.

鬼太郎茶屋 in Tokyo’s Chofu City, nestled near the serene Shindaiji Temple, is a whimsical haven for fans of the beloved anime series GeGeGe no Kitaro. As you step inside, you’ll find yourself surrounded by charming statues of Kitaro, his friends, and other yokai (supernatural creatures). But don’t expect a spooky atmosphere—this cozy cafe is anything but eerie. The quaint interior, reminiscent of an old-fashioned candy store, houses an array of delightful yokai-themed merchandise. From nostalgic trinkets to exclusive collectibles, it’s a treasure trove for fans seeking that special something. And yes, you can sip your tea or coffee while surrounded by these friendly apparitions. Yokai-inspired treats await you at the cafe. Imagine enjoying a cup of matcha latte with a smiling Noppera-bo (faceless ghost) by your side or savoring a dorayaki (red bean pancake) shaped like Sunakake-baba (sand-throwing hag). Each dish is a playful nod to the rich world of yokai. For art enthusiasts, the Yokai Gallery showcases rare illustrations by the legendary manga artist Shigeru Mizuki. His unique touch brings yokai to life, and here you can immerse yourself in their whimsical universe. The gallery also features the captivating “Yokai Japan Map,” which invites visitors to explore the diverse landscapes inhabited by these supernatural beings. GeGeGe no Kitaro, a beloved work that emphasizes coexistence with nature, finds its essence in this charming spot. Amidst the lush greenery of Chofu, the Onigashima Tea House (as it’s also known) transports you to the heart of the “Mizuki World.” Whether you’re a longtime fan or a curious traveler, this 60-year-old wooden building promises nostalgia and a deeper appreciation for the wonders of nature.
Akihiro Y — Google review
This place is extremely cute and a great stop for Kitaro merch. The staff was very friendly. I thought the food was just okay, but most character cafes are banking more on cuteness than quality. I really loved the decorations.
Melissa M — Google review
If you are around the Chofu area and like GeGeGe no Kitaro, you might want to visit this place. It is a small place near Jinda-ji temple. They have a cafe with dessert's theme from Gegege no Kitaro. They also have a nice collcetion of souvenirs. You can see a small museum next to the store, with a donation entrance fee of 200 yen. You can see variety of small monster inside the museum(however, please in mind that you need to take some stairs and the place is quite small nut quite good and detail for its size). If you are a fan of Gegege no Kitaro, you should visit Tottori prefecture where they have a city based on Gegege no Kitaro. If you don't have the chance to visit Tottori, this place is alright especially for the souvenirs. If you are lucky, you can take the Gegegeno no Kitaro bus from Chofu station to this place.
Massimo B — Google review
Spooky, cute, and full of nostalgia! 👻🍵 Kitaro Chaya is not just a café – it’s a quirky little world where yokai (Japanese spirits) come to life. Inspired by the legendary manga GeGeGe no Kitaro, the place is filled with charming and creepy-cute details: figurines, posters, and even yokai-themed snacks! It’s like stepping into a childhood dream (or nightmare, but in the fun way 😄). Grab a matcha latte with Kitaro’s face on it, snap some pics with the yokai statues outside, and don’t miss the small but fascinating mini-museum upstairs. Even if you’re not a die-hard fan, it’s a fun and unique stop – weird in the best possible way. 📍Right near Chofu’s Jindaiji Temple 📸 Photo ops: 10/10 👻 For manga fans & curious souls alike!

If you love Shigeru Mizuki and GeGeGe no Kitarō, then this café (as well as shop and exhibition) is for you! The tastes were good (for a theme café) and a plus is their craft beer with Kitarō <3 Wonderful place, clise to where Shigeru Mizuki lived for many years of his life. Visited May 2017.

Soba noodle shop
Yusui is a casual eatery known for its handmade soba noodles served with dipping sauces and tempura, set in a charming space with a leafy terrace. Visitors rave about the scrumptious and tasty food, particularly recommending the signature handmade cold soba and soba soup. The ambience receives high praise for its cleanliness and soothing green surroundings. The menu offers various options including tempura soba, dofu hotpot, and nameko mushroom soba.
Soba restaurant in Japanese traditional house. I love it very much simple but rich of food culture here. Delicious and great service.
SURASAK A — Google review
On our way here, we passed by a soba place as well and wondering why that place was empty and Yusui had a decent amount of customers. Just after eating the appetizer, we knew why. It’s delicious here. We got the Wild Edible Plants Simmered in Sweetened Soy Sauce and the Duck Meat Smoked. We loved the duck meat, tasted like balogne! Soba were very good as well! I got their best seller - mounded soba with tempura. Yum yum!
Charlene C — Google review
So soba is a must when in around Jindaiji temple and I suppose this place is one of those reasons. Had the soba with tempura, which passed the test, but also were in love with the appetizers, including the quail eggs, smoked duck and fried cheese. Came in a sunny Sunday and before 11 there were already people lining (the place opens at 10:30). But the line moves fast and sitting outside made everything nicer.
Juan R — Google review
Really cozy little restaurant near the temple. We had tempura soba and it was delicious! Very friendly staff too.
Hana A — Google review
I recommend 90% soba. It is recommended to order cold soba even in winter. First of all, please taste it as it is. Even if you don't chew, the smell of soba is amazing. There is no feeling of 100% soba. The aroma of soba is not inferior to the soup.

1. Food : 4 star. All the food items that we ordered were quite scrumptious and tasty. Must try the signature handmade cold soba and soba soup. 2. Portion : 3 star. Not very generous by taking into account the price. 3. Ambience : 5 star. The whole place was very neat and clean, and surrounded by all greenness, giving customers a very soothing and comfortable feeling while enjoying the food. There was a portion of the kitchen in transparent glass where patrons could view the amazing noodle-making performance by the chef. 4. Service : 5 star. The restaurant had only 2 serving waitresses but food serving was pretty swift and the staffs were all friendly and attentive. The restaurant also prepared menu in English to cater for foreigners / tourists who did not understand Japanese. One of the waitresses was conversant in English and no communication barrier at all. 5. Price : 3 star. The prices of the items on the menu were considered quite exorbitant, at least to the tourists like us. 6. Location : 5 star. It was conveniently located next to the main road within 5 minutes walk from Jindaiji Temple. OVERALL : 4 STARS.

Every time I visit Jindaiji Temple I have to come to this restaurant! It’s nearby the temple, spacious and traditional atmosphere, and great food. Before eating at this restaurant I’ve only had soba from the convenience store…this was a game changer! I always get the recommended set which comes with assorted vegetables and a big shrimp all battered in tempura. And the process of pouring the water used to cook the noodles in the dashi once you finished the noodles was a great finish to the whole meal.

Little traditional dinning place. Worth visiting , so traditional and the staffs were very friendly and courteous. They sell many cute souvenirs inside this place . Portions are generous, but flavor is average at best. Jindaiji, with its botanical garden, is a nice place to visit, but there are many places to eat soba there so no need to make a special trip, nor wait in line, for Tamon. Service is good, once you’re seated, and friendly.

At the store near me, when the bread was baked, the staff put it in a basket and went around to all the seats, but at this store, the bread is lined up near the drink bar and you go to pick it up. Perhaps because it was a day when there weren't many customers, the bread on display didn't run out and was left cold. It's like a free breakfast buffet at a business hotel. I went there for the freshly baked bread, but I felt disappointed. The only saving grace was that there were two or three kinds of freshly baked bread displayed during the meal. I don't know if the quality differs depending on the store, or if it's due to the current situation due to the coronavirus pandemic, but I was disappointed because I had high hopes for the trip. I had received a coupon for the seasonal birthday course on an app I had downloaded previously, offering 500 yen off the 2,500 yen course and applicable to everyone at the table, so for the main course, I ordered grilled young chicken and colorful vegetables, and my wife and son ordered quattro fromaggio cream gratin. For all of this, it's a better deal than the main course, all-you-can-eat bread, drink, and dessert set from the main menu. When we ordered, the staff told us that cold water was self-service, and I was like, "Huh?" I thought so, but I was surprised to find that in the two years since I last visited Saint Marc, drinks had also become available at the drink bar. The verrine arrived about 10 minutes after I ordered. The verrine was a chawanmushi-like dish of shrimp, jelly, edamame, and flying fish roe, served in a small champagne glass. It was delicious, with a strong dashi flavor just like chawanmushi. The crunchy texture of the flying fish was just right. The soup arrived right after the verrine, so it seemed like the timing wasn't very well thought out. The soup was burdock cream soup. A sweet, potage-like soup with a fragrant burdock flavor. It was okay tasting. At this point, the freshly baked bread arrived. This time I had sesame stick bread and a croissant. I tried both. The sesame stick bread had a flaky pastry crust with a slight salty taste and a delicious sesame aroma. The croissant didn't have much butter to it, so it was a bit disappointing. Next came the salad. The salad consisted of turnip, mizuna, purple cabbage, and prosciutto. The turnip, marinated in sweet and sour sauce, was delicious. The prosciutto was delicious, with just the right amount of salt and flavor. At this point, freshly baked bread was introduced again. This time it was French toast. It was a bit disappointing, though. Then the main course, grilled young chicken and colorful vegetables, arrived. The chicken was topped with sprouts and purple onion, and sprinkled with grated cheese. Underneath the chicken were grilled potatoes and onions. When I tried it, the sweet and sour sauce went perfectly with the juicy grilled chicken, and it was delicious. The chicken itself was well-seasoned and tasty. When eaten with grilled onions, the sweetness of the onions spread throughout my mouth, making it very tasty. It was very satisfyingly delicious. At one point, I tried a bite of my wife's gratin, which had a rich, thick sauce that was tasty, but the seasoning was so strong that it seemed a bit too heavy to eat the whole plate, and as expected, my wife gave up halfway through. At this point, the freshly baked breads were introduced. It was a bread with red beans kneaded into the dough, mugwort bread, baguette, and cocoa bread. I had one of each. I scooped up the grilled chicken sauce on the baguette and enjoyed it. Of the two, I think the mugwort bread was the best. Next, they introduced me to raisin bread, so I had one. It was just averagely tasty. After this, more than 30 minutes had passed since we finished our main course, and dessert still hadn't arrived. I remember this happening before, but it seems like this happens quite often at Saint-Marc. The family sitting next to us seemed to be in the same situation, and they were urging the staff for dessert. There are a fair number of staff, and I think the staff member who goes around carrying bread should pay a bit more attention, but it's a shame that it always ends up like this. I also asked the staff member who goes around carrying bread for dessert, but no matter how much time passed, it still didn't arrive. So I asked a nice older staff member, who was very apologetic, but after more than 15 minutes, dessert finally arrived. My dessert was a special birthday dessert: a round chocolate cake and milk pudding in a mini glass. The plate had "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate sauce, and a candle was stuck in the chocolate cake. The staff member lit the candle for me. My wife and son were served chocolate cake for dessert. When I tried their dessert, the chocolate cake was a little crumbly, but it was quite delicious with the whipped cream that came with it. The caramel in the milk pudding was a little bitter, but it was still quite tasty. I feel like it would have tasted even better if it had been served at a more timely manner. Considering the contents of the course, I think that for 2,000 yen, this amount of content and deliciousness is worthy of praise, so it's a shame that the dessert took so long to arrive. I feel that this is a fairly convenient restaurant for families, so I hope they will improve this in the future. Thank you for the meal.

Shibasakitei is a popular spot known for its delicious noodles made from local wheat and alkaline water. The shio bonito and shoyu broths are highly recommended, both containing shiitake mushrooms and chicken bones that add depth and richness to the flavors. What sets this place apart is their commitment to using no flavor enhancers or processed extracts in their dishes, resulting in an authentic and satisfying ramen experience.
I love this ramen shop! The soup is based on Chicken and Soy souse, which leads low calories than other types of ramen. The noodles are straight and tasty. When I visited here, it was before 11:00AM on Wednesday, many ramen lovers were making a line already. You might have to wait to face this ramen. But I would say it would be worth😌

This Ramen was so delicious. Since I tried a very good duck-chicken ramen two years ago in Kyoto, I couldn't eat a ramen which is nearly or more delicious. This one is maybe even better (fish based ramen). Thank you master chef.

This small ramen place should be in the Michelin guide. There are only ten seats available, so be prepared for a waiting line during usual meal hours. We love the sansho (山椒 Japanese pepper or Japanese prickly-ash) ramen, and the flavour is simply exquisite. The soup is clear and light, with a huge impact from the freshly ground sansho. The noodle is always perfectly al dente. It would be perfect if the owner's helper smiled a bit more and was courteous.

Loved the concept of no flavor boosters or processed extract materials used in preparation. Additionally this ramen is not trying to be like ramen wannabe. It tastes good like any other traditional ramen, very presentable and only cation would be the quantity I thought it would be small but I think the medium would be a better alternative. But you’re the one with the tummy just go for it. I’d definitely visit again.

A hidden gem in a residential area of Chofu, Shibasakitei is a throwback to the classic Niboshi Ramen. For 950 yen you can enjoy a fabulous bowl of Niboshi Shio Ramen with Won Ton. The soup has a distinct dried fish broth which pairs well with their plump won ton dumplings. While you might expect a few small won ton from other ramen shops, Shibasakitei doesn't skimp out on their portions. Prepare yourself for five to six ridiculously plump won ton dumplings. The soup itself is one you won't forget. With an initial taste of dried fish, you'll leave with a aromatic salty aftertaste. The noodles are quite thin and is a great accent to their original soup. Well worth the trip for their bowl. You'll leave wondering why you haven't gone before.

Nice and tasty duck broth, not so often thin slices of chashu and bamboo. Waiting line quite short so no big deal ;) And nice music in background!

Ikkyūan is a casual establishment with a relaxed ambiance and minimalist Japanese-inspired design. They specialize in serving soba noodles, dumplings, and beer. Currently offering a winter limited menu, one of their standout dishes is the "duck soba tukejiru," which consists of 90% buckwheat soba noodles. The duck soup incorporates a well-balanced combination of green onions, burdock roots, and garland chrysanthemums.
SO GOOD! I'm gluten intolerant and I got the 100% buckwheat soba noodles with the walnut dipping sauce and a side of the sweet mochi with sesame sauce. Exquisite!! Definitely get there early, I arrived after the Goma Ceremony and took the last seat at 11.30.

In-house made Soba noodles. Very famous restaurant. I had the freshest soba noodles being just made right after I ordered. Usually long line in weekend. To avoid a long wait, it is recommended to go before noon just as they open at 11am. Soba noodles could be sold out if you go late afternoon. P.S. Soba mochi with sweet soy sauce and Soba dango is available for takeout and sold in front of the shop.

11/24/2024 I had soba dango here and they have two different types of sauce, Mitarashi and sesame. I had sesame and it tasted good! Nothing too different from other dango but the mochi itself did not taste like anything so that’s probably the difference.
