Shinto shrine
Sights & Landmarks
Nestled on the picturesque Mt. Otokoyama, Iwashimizu Hachimangu is a historic Shinto shrine complex dating back to the 9th century. Away from the bustling streets of Kyoto, this expansive site offers a serene retreat where visitors can immerse themselves in nature and ancient Shinto traditions.
Excellent beautiful shrine and a nice overview from the top worth it to walk up and down. Also very convenient if you can't walk for so long you can take the ropeway for ¥300 per ride up and down.
Zhel A — Google review
High above the city, where the wind carries whispers of history through the trees, I found something quietly sacred — Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. Riding the cable car up the forested slopes of Mount Otokoyama, I felt like I was being lifted not just through nature, but through time. At the top, the shrine stood with quiet dignity — centuries of prayer and presence carved into every beam and stone. The moment I stepped beneath the towering torii gate, a stillness settled in my chest. The bustle of the world below faded. Only the soft rustle of leaves, the chirp of birds, and the crisp Kyoto air remained. I wandered the grounds slowly, tracing the contours of the ancient buildings, marveling at the harmony between architecture and earth. The main hall, a national treasure, stood as if it had always belonged to the mountain itself. It wasn't just a visit. It felt like a conversation — between the soul and something far greater. I came looking for tradition. I left with peace.

Awesome huge shrine dedicated to Japan's God of war, hachiman. Short walk and cable car away from the nearby train station. Super convenient. Basically no people, nice views of Kyoto. A true hidden gem.
Harry H — Google review
This shrine has 2 entrances that I was aware of. I cannot recall if there are more. There is one by cable car and another one going upstairs - a long trek. We went up with the cable car and went out through the stair exit/entrance. During this time one of the Tori was being reconstructed/restored so we didn't have the chance to see that when entering the main temple. There you can find goshuin masters and some souvenirs. The shrine is surrounded by marvelous flora and fauna. Beautiful birds and really interesting insects. I would say it certainly is a purifying trek with some beautiful scenic spots. No need to pay for entrance, only for cable car and transport.

Such a wonderful place to explore with no crowds at all! Ride the cable car up to the temple! Iwashimizu Hachimangū is a large shrine complex located on top of Mt. Otokoyama, surrounded by nature and a beautiful view. Free entrance.
American C — Google review
I like this place because of the access to the top by cable car, the scenery is even more beautiful if you come in the fall, there is also a monument to Thomas Alva Edison at the top, an observatory, and a beautiful temple. When I was here, the front part was being renovated. So I only took photos at the front. The people around the temple are also very friendly.

Very serene and scenic location devoid of foreign tourists. Had a short tranquil walk around the area after going up the cable and has a nice restaurant near.

Nature & Parks
Sewaritei, located in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture, is a renowned cherry blossom spot along the Yodo River basin. The area boasts about 1,000 cherry trees that form a stunning 1.4-kilometer-long tunnel of blossoms during the spring season. Unlike other popular spots in Kyoto City, Sewaritei attracts fewer tourists and more locals, offering a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to enjoy walking and bicycling trails.
This a rather well know attraction in the Kyoto area for hanami or Sakura season in Japan. You’ll find people of all ages enjoying the cherry blossoms 🌸. The season is about a month or so in length, occurring earlier every year due to climate change. So no matter when you come, expect it to be crowded. Ignore the usual—people taking photos of themselves in traditional dress or the screaming children. Find a quiet place under a tree like we did and enjoy nature for an hour or two. A nice way to spend a morning. 🌞⛅️
Mark C — Google review
Went here on a day trip from Osaka, didn't know that there was a festival going on (sakura matsuri). The cherry blossoms were a sight to behold and had a blast walking through the festival while having snacks
Baye — Google review
It’s a beautiful place to enjoy hanami (sakura viewing). During sakura season, the riverbank is lined with lots of cherry blossom trees, creating a stunning sakura tunnel that stretches far along the walking path. There is also a sakura festival held during this time. It brings a lively atmosphere to the area. It can get very crowded, especially on weekends, but the beauty of the blossoms makes it worth it.Perfect for enjoying the fleeting beauty of spring.
P W — Google review
A beautiful place to go for the sakura season. The sakura tunnel is spectacular. It is also relatively quiet and most people are local, there were very few foreign tourists. There are also many food and drink stalls and toilets. I would return here whenever I am in Japan in spring.
Eric W — Google review
So many sakura here, and you can enjoy your picnic while cherry blossoms here. No tickets needed, no time limit.
Jiawei Z — Google review
been there 2 apr 2019 and the sakura not full blossomed. that being said, i highly recommend this spot coz it’s spacious for everyone! the 1300m-ish long sakura tree tunnel means you don’t have to fight or wait for a particular sakura tree. take the train to yawatashi station and follow the crowd to cross the bridge. you can prepare a floor mat for picnic after snapping 1000 shots. there are small food booths, toilets and a smoking tent (could be only during the sakura season, check before you go!)

The Yawata City Shokado Garden Art Museum is a serene and picturesque destination located in a quiet suburban area of Kyoto. The museum features an impressive collection of calligraphy and brush paintings by the monk, as well as three traditional tea houses nestled within a colorful garden filled with diverse foliage. The garden showcases the beauty of all four seasons, boasting 40 types of bamboo, nearly 300 camellia trees, plum trees, cherry trees, green and Japanese maple trees.
Last Sunday, May 15) I visited the Shōkadō Park in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture. It's a relatively large garden with several tea rooms, a drawing room and an art museum. It’s in honour of Shōkadō Shōjō (松花堂昭乗, 1584-1639), a Buddhist monk, painter, calligrapher and master of the tea ceremony who was a central figure in the glamorous Kan’ei culture of the early Edo period.

Lovely, quiet Japanese garden just down the road from Iwashimizu Hachimangu. Most of the buildings were under repair when I visited (5/2019) due to earthquake/typhoon damage, but the garden was still lovely anyway.

It is a popular destination for those involved in aviation, including airline industry professionals and space developers. Visitors often come to pray for success in examinations and the safety of airplanes. The shrine features a small but modern and beautiful design, with an impressive skylight and stained glass.

The exterior is covered with a concrete wall and blends in with the surrounding residential area, and since it doesn't have the typical gate structure of a shrine, it's easy to pass by without noticing it at first glance. There is a parking lot for about 3 to 4 cars underground, and the grounds are small, but it is a unique shrine with museum-like elements, including an open-air display of airplane engines and a museum related to airplanes. Ramen restaurant
Ichiran Kyoto Yawata shop is an informal ramen restaurant known for its specialty tonkotsu ramen in a rich pork bone broth. Located conveniently between Kyoto and Osaka, it offers the same quality as its Tokyo counterpart. The service is commendable, and there's ample free parking available, making it a preferable option over city dining. Solo diners can enjoy isolated seating with partitions for a focused mealtime, while families can avail complimentary kids' ramen upon inquiry.
You order at a vending machine at the entrance and when you sit down you fill out a paper how hard or soft you want the noodles, whether you want all the toppings or not etc.

Men-ya Takei - Route 1 offers an exceptional tsukemen experience, with a well-managed and comfortable atmosphere. Despite the long queue, the staff efficiently directs customers to parking and ensures a quick turnover. The medium serving size is satisfying, while the large option provides extra noodles. The intentionally cold noodles prevent overcooking but may result in lukewarm broth towards the end of the meal. In addition to their renowned tsukemen, their fried chicken comes highly recommended as well.
Best tsukemen I've ever had in my life. The medium was a good serving size (the large has an extra 100grams of noodles...). The queue was long but moved quickly. And the staff even help direct you to parking. Well managed, very comfortable. The noodles come out cold (purposely) so they don't over cook, but this makes the broth lukewarm towards the end of the meal (which was the only downside).

(Translated by Google) This ramen shop is popular for its tsukemen. There are long queues on weekends. The tsukemen (regular) costs 1,130 yen (tax included), and the dipping soup is rich yet refreshing, with the aroma of fish powder and yuzu. It goes well with the chewy and supple noodles. When you finish eating the noodles, call out to the staff, and they will bring you a pot of seafood soup. If you dilute the remaining soup with the soup stock, the flavor changes and you can enjoy it to the last drop. Be careful of the amount of dipping soup left. The light soy sauce ramen (950 yen (tax included)) first tastes the sweetness of the soy sauce soup, but there is a delicious flavor behind it. It has a depth that is an exquisite mix of richness and sharpness. The green onions and green vegetables add a refreshing feeling. I was a little concerned about the dryness of the pork, but overall it was a well-made ramen. Counter seats. Table seats. Ticket vending machine. Parking available. If you're in Kyoto, a visit to the Ramen Blunted Shop Yawata is a must for any ramen enthusiast. I recently indulged in their set A for lunch, and let me tell you, the experience was delightful! The service was impressively swift, and the fried chicken stole the show with its crispy exterior and juicy interior. The fried rice complemented it well too.

The decor is showing it's age and it's not exactly located in the best spot, but offers great dishes at fair prices. It seems to be the best fancy restaurant in the area. The beef dishes are amazing and everything is prepared very well.

Reservations are required for both❗️❗️ We were able to enter despite our unexpected visit😃 The interior was calm and relaxing, allowing for quiet conversation while enjoying our meal. 😄 We visited for dinner🌃🍴. When we first arrived, there was a single elderly, calm-looking couple seated at a corner table❗️. However, while we were enjoying our course meal, a group of six customers came in one after another❗️ My spouse told me that Otokoyama is quite popular. I ordered the special dish Otokoyama, and my spouse ordered something from the seafood menu. 😋 Both dishes were presented in an ingenious way❗️ The food was also excellent. 😃 We visited on a bus, so we weren't able to try the alcoholic beverages, but I thought the food here would pair perfectly with wine. It has been around for quite some time (established in 1969), and the exterior has the feel of an old country drive-in. The parking lot is large, which makes it feel even more like a drive-in. I stopped by on a weekday lunchtime. It has the feel of a drive-in, but the contents are a high-end Western restaurant. It's a bit pricey for a casual stop. Their specialty is hamburger and steak, so I ordered the cheapest hamburger lunch, but it was still 3,000 yen. The fact that hors d'oeuvres are served makes it different from other Western restaurants. The cold pumpkin soup, the main hamburger, and the side dish that goes with it all feel elegant. The taste of the hamburger itself was nothing outstanding, but it was a safe and delicious hamburger. After the meal, dessert and drinks were served. The blancmange and chocolate mint that came for dessert were delicious. I'm an old man, so it was the first time I'd ever eaten such a stylish dessert, but I'd like to eat it again. (Translated by Google) This restaurant has many regulars. The appetizer platter (or what appears to be a platter) is all delicious. The soup is also delicious, with a strong corn flavor. The meat is also good, but you can't choose the doneness; I wish they'd let you choose that. The desserts are also delicious, with a nice sweetness. The portions are small, which is a French thing, so it's not what you're looking for. This isn't for people who value portions. The interior has a nostalgic feel, reminiscent of a Showa-era drive-in, and the quiet atmosphere makes for a great dining experience. The sushi restaurant Asahiya in Kyoto lacks an English menu but is known to be somewhat pricey, although the quality of the food justifies the cost. It is highly regarded as one of the best dining experiences during a visit to Kyoto. The menu offers a variety of dishes including sashimi, fried oyster, and tempura, all of which are delightful. This establishment is a must-try for anyone exploring Iwashumizu Hachimangu as it conveniently sits opposite the station.
There is no english menu. Kinda expensive but very worth it. One of the best meal we ate during our kyoto trip. We ordered sashimi, fried oyster, and tempura. And it were all delicious. A must try restaurant esp. if you are visiting iwashumizu hachimangu. It is located in front of the station. Will feature this on my vlog at my youtube (@soraltrading) and on my other social medias.

I love everything about this place. The oshi-zushi is what drew me in years ago but I’ve been going ever since for pretty much everything on the menu: oyako don, ninshin soba, oden, otsukuri, shime-saba and more. Friendly people and an old neighborhood izakaya vibe. Perfect for a meal and a beer after a hike up Hiranoyama to Iwashimizu Hachimangu shrine.

(Translated by Google) This is a soba restaurant located in front of Iwashimizu Hachimangu Station. The mackerel stick sushi that was introduced on TV seems to be a specialty, so you can choose between soba or udon for the mackerel stick sushi set. I ordered (Tororo kelp soba and mackerel stick sushi) ¥1,815. The mackerel stick sushi was thick, well-seasoned, and very delicious. (Translated by Google) I stopped by just before 1:30pm on May 23rd. The restaurant is filled with locals and is warm and cozy. They also have dubbed Korean dramas playing. I've never seen it before... (°ω°) ホゥ The wait is about 5 minutes. The udon is soft and thin, similar to somen noodles. The pickled ginger is delicious...it's not too strong and sweet, so you can eat it in between meals. What kind of broth is this? It's a new taste I've never had before... ( 'ω' ) The fat of the mackerel is irresistible!! I love this so much (≧▽≦) The simmered burdock root also tastes great! The burdock root soaks into the meat! (ᵒ͈̑ڡᵒ͈̑ ) The broth soaks into the fried tofu in the udon, so it's a little too sweet... I wonder if there's kelp on top of the mackerel? It doesn't have a fishy smell and it tastes great! The small bowl was a hijiki seaweed salad in the picture, but it was simmered in shigure, so maybe it changes daily? The pickled ginger was delicious and I've always disliked the strong ginger taste, but I think I'll get addicted to it The soy sauce was light ( ´≖ω≖`) I like it I added chili pepper to the udon soup to change the flavor and drank it all! Some of the soup was too strong and I couldn't finish it, but I think drinking it all is the end of the meal, so I'll give it a reasonable amount ( •̀ω•́ ) If it was just the mackerel sushi, I would give it 5 stars, but the udon didn't exceed my expectations, so I'll give it 4 stars and be condescending... The person I told them I was alone, maybe they were local...? They looked too familiar and I thought they were a store clerk. I wondered if they were going out to buy something... Next time I come here, I'd like to order a piece of mackerel sushi, it was excellent!

(Translated by Google) This is a long-established sushi restaurant that has been loved by locals for many years since its establishment, and their signature menu is bar sushi. The sushi is made with careful handwork and reminds me of the taste of pressed sushi I used to eat. ~Today's meal~ Stick sushi set Kitsune Soba 1,815 yen (tax included) [Cooking/Taste] Bar sushi has a good balance of toppings and vinegared rice, and tastes good even without soy sauce. The mackerel was fatty yet refreshing, and I felt like I could eat one right away. I don't think it was particularly delicious, but I enjoyed the simple yet profound flavor. 【access】 In front of Keihan Main Line "Iwashimizu Hachimangu Station" 19m from the station [Store atmosphere] There were quite a few customers, so it was a lively atmosphere. From the counter seats, you can watch the craftsmen at work up close, making you feel as if you are the protagonist of a solitary gourmet experience. There was seating, and it was the perfect space for a meal after visiting Hachiman Shrine with three generations. It is characterized by a warm and homely atmosphere. 【service】 The staff is kind and courteous and impressive. Although the store was full, orders were handled quickly. [Price/cospa] Prices seem a little high, especially for the noodles. Mackerel sticks are expensive everywhere, but it's a little cheaper if you order them as a set. Since the original cost cannot be said to be high, the store seems to be making quite a profit.
