Ishiyama-dera Temple

Mentioned on
10 lists
Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Sacred & Religious Sites
Nestled along the serene banks of the Setagawa River, Ishiyamadera Temple is a captivating destination that beautifully marries spirituality and history. This tranquil place of worship features an impressive two-story pagoda and is renowned for its stunning Buddhist scrolls, particularly enchanting during the fall when vibrant foliage surrounds it. Rich in literary significance, Ishiyamadera has been immortalized in classic works like The Gossamer Years and The Pillow Book, drawing visitors from noble families since the Heian era.
Underrated temple in Shiga Prefecture. The beauty of Buddhism is in the every corner. The relation of the first Japanese female author is another good story to be told. There's local bus available directly from the closest JR Station. It's worth a half day dedicated to see this temple.
Jason H — Google review
A beautiful and serene temple exploding with plum blossoms. Stunning rock formations, views toward Otsu, cool breezes, bonsai exhibitions and cedar trees with moss gardens make you wonder why everyone crowds the top 10 temples in Kyoto instead of visiting Ishiyama!
Suki S — Google review
It was so much fun walking around inside! There’s so much to explore (I had a hard time deciding which area to visit first, lol). It’s also a place with a lot of historic events, this is where Murasaki Shikibu wrote The Tale of Genji! I’ll definitely visit again in a different season!
ヒマワリの種のリスキーア — Google review
This is most scenic temple in Otsu and one of the most beautiful in Japan. It has many Sakura trees and many scenic spots. Only sad part is they have Peacocks in a small enclosure. I urge to set them free. On the way there’s a canal which is equally beautiful with Sakura lined up.
Manpreeth N — Google review
I went early on a rainy Sunday (Oct 26, 2025). Few people were there at around 9 AM: serene, beautiful and soul-satisfying — a wondrous wander for this first-timer. Entry fee Y600, a short walk beyond the Main Gate. Well-maintained paths throughout the park-like precinct. Beautiful buildings worthy of their national patrimony designation. No crowd — I was mostly alone during my wandering. Truly worth a visit. I can imagine the whole place being even more beautiful when all the maple trees turn color in a few weeks. Spring time should also be lovely with their multiple plum groves in the precint.
Joe P — Google review
Ishiyamadera Temple, nestled along the Seta River, is a serene and historic site known for its stunning natural surroundings and rich cultural significance. Famous as the place where Murasaki Shikibu began writing The Tale of Genji, the temple offers a unique blend of history, literature, and spirituality. The temple grounds are peaceful, with beautiful seasonal views, especially during autumn when the maple leaves turn vibrant shades of red and orange. The ancient rock formations and wooden halls create a tranquil atmosphere perfect for reflection. A must-visit for history lovers and those seeking a quiet escape near Lake Biwa!
Gemi K — Google review
This is a beautiful temple with many walking paths. It's definitely worth spending a few hours there. I went on a sunny warm November Sunday (11/16/25) and there weren't many people there. There are also nice snack places just outside the temple.
Nikki S — Google review
Hilltop temple with lots of colorful Japanese maple tree, cherry trees, azaleas and camelia bushes. Pretty view over the maple trees from the open terrace of the main temple building. The walk up is lined with ground lanterns during the night lightup season. Irratatingly doesn't allow photos despite expensive entry fee ;(

Mount Hiei

Mountain peak
Nature & Parks
Mount Hiei, located in Kyoto, is a picturesque peak known for its temples, garden museum, hotel, and hiking trails. The Isshu trail offers a scenic route around the city's eastern, northern, and western edges through mountains and forests. It includes notable landmarks such as Fushimi Inari shrine at the eastern end of the trail and Enryaku-ji on the summit of Mount Hiei.
One of the best places we visited in my Japan trip! We came here in autumn and the colours were stunning! The tram going up to the cable car was so picturesque! Absolutely recommend! There’s a cafe and large souvenir shop up there and they do treats there, I would recommend the mochi in red bean soup!
Katie W — Google review
The summit site itself does not have a good view, but the area near the gardens is definitely spectacular. Not many signs around so just look out for the paths
C. R — Google review
absolutely breathtaking SubhanALLAAH! really worth visiting using the cable car! if you only use the cable car you can't see lake biwa. you can use the ropeway to get more place and better views from heigher up! if you use the ropeway you can see lake biwa! absolutely gorgeous! SubhanALLAAH!
Furqan S — Google review
This was a excellant hike , you get off two station before the train stops and follow the path beside the river and then it leads into trail.
Mahmoud J — Google review
Mount Hiei was the highlight of our honeymoon! The view from the top is breathtaking, and the calmness of the forest was unmatched. The hike is all incline so if you have mobility difficulties or breathing problems, account for that! Took us just over 2 hours with some breaks, and our thighs were feeling the burn. But the view from the top was worth it! I highly recommend checking out Enryakuji temple just 2 km from the cable car. It was so serene and was a pleasant treat after the challenging hike.
Rach V — Google review
A lesser known spot in Kyoto, and is definitely worth the visit! My Hiei is the home of Japanese Buddhism and so is steeped in history, gorgeous temples and amazing nature. Mt Hiei straddles the Kyoto and Shiga prefectures. The access from the Shiga prefecture offers stunning views of Lake Biwa, as well as the longest cable car in Japan, at over 2 kilometers. 🚃 Getting there: from Kyoto, take the Eizan railway, and if you're lucky, you can catch the Hiei special train that celebrates 100 years. From there you can walk or take the cable car + rope car. 🚠 The cable car + rope car is currently ¥2000 round trip for an adult. You need to walk about 300m between the two stops. You cannot pay with an IC card, but can use a credit card or cash at a kiosk machine. 🛕 To get to the temple complex from the Kyoto side, you can walk 30 minutes or take a bus (which does take an IC card and is about ¥280 each way). The Shiga side cable car is closer to the temples. Admission to the temple complex is currently ¥1000, ¥1500 if you want to do the temples and museum. As the home of Japanese Buddhism, monks have been living here and establishing temples since the year 800! 😲 🏃 Mt Hiei is famous for its marathon monks, who would walk a marathon a day, sometimes for years. 🚻 Toilets at key areas ☕ Cafe and souvenir shop located near the temple complex. 🥾 So good for hiking!
Stacey T — Google review
Hiked all the way to the top, constantly on the lookout for bears due to the warning signs along the trail😝 Despite the wildlife concerns, it was a fun and memorable hike.
Sophia F — Google review
I visited from Kyoto, took the Eizan line, cable car and ropeway, visited the Enryakuji temples, then walked down to the halfway point to catch the cable car back. The cable is ¥600 and ropeway is ¥400. Go when there's a clear sky for a great view!

Enryaku-ji Temple

Mentioned on
8 lists
Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
Enryaku-ji Temple, a sprawling Tendai Buddhist monastery with a history dating back to the 7th century, offers a surreal and peaceful experience. Accessible by driving or taking the train to Sakamoto and then the Funicular up the mountain, this place is enveloped in tranquility with periodic ringing of the peace bell and misty clouds creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
Very nice quiet tourist destination away from busy Kyoto. Amazing view of Lake Biwa. Recommend coming in fall or Sakura season. Reminder to be quiet and respectful on Temple grounds. When going, recommend to take the cable car in Sakamoto(坂本), it is the longest cable car in Japan.
Vincent Y — Google review
Visited this place during public holiday in September, 2025. One of the historical building/temple was undergoing restoration. Overall, had good experience visiting and witnessing Japans historical place.
Kaleem S — Google review
Visited in July recently. Reached here from Kyoto station with a train ride, then a bus, a cable car, a ropeway and finally a hike. It may sound overwhelming but journey itself is worth it and the destination is as good as Koyozumi-dera. The accessibility is definitely why there are not many tourists here This temple grounds is quite big. Unfortunately during our visit the main hall was under renovation. May just visit again if ever in Kyoto again.
Google L — Google review
From religious point of view: very important place and definitely worth it of you are interested in Japanese branch pf Buddhism and Japanese history and culture in general. General tourist point of view: there is really nothing special about it that would justify the entrance fee of 1000¥ + the cable or ropeway if you decide to take it for 1800¥ roundway. Any smaller temple in nature is just as beautiful. It really depends on what kind of tourist you are.
Finite T — Google review
We walked about 10 minutes from the cable car station to the temple. It was a clear and crisp day which made the short stroll really enjoyable. There is a loop bus that goes to the Heizan-Sakamoto JR station.

Enryakuji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Mount Hieizan, is a treasure trove of history, spirituality, and stunning natural beauty. As the birthplace of Japanese Tendai Buddhism, it holds immense cultural and religious significance. The temple complex is vast, with beautifully preserved buildings spread across serene forested grounds. Each area offers a unique glimpse into its rich history. The peaceful atmosphere is perfect for reflection, and the views of Lake Biwa from the mountain are breathtaking. Whether you’re interested in history, Buddhism, or simply seeking tranquility, Enryakuji Temple is a must-visit destination near Kyoto!
Gemi K — Google review
This temple is located on a truly sacred mountain. There aren’t many souvenir shops, food stalls, or entertainment spots nearby, but that’s exactly what keeps its spiritual atmosphere pure. It may not suit those looking for fun or sightseeing, but the peacefulness and lack of crowds make it even more special. For Buddhists, it’s without a doubt one of Japan’s true sacred places.
Amanda T — Google review
Visited in October’25. Super disappointed as the main building is fully under construction. The way to the temple is not the easiest, the entrance is not free, but the experience is not the best. The museum doesn’t give much information unless you do not only speak Japanese but also know the buddhism context very well. Wouldn’t recommend visiting unless they are done with the construction works. However the nature is amazing!

Omi Shrine

Omi Jingu Shrine is a culturally significant and time-honored shrine with intricate architecture set in a serene environment. It is dedicated to Emperor Tenji, the 38th emperor of Japan, and showcases 'Omi construction' from the Showa period. The main building and worship halls are enclosed by a corridor at the base of a hill, adding to its historical and architectural significance.
We visited this place because my brother and I loved the Chihayafuru series. If you want to go for a peaceful walk—away from the busy streets in the city—this place is a must! The staff was very friendly and helpful too! They also have a space dedicated to Chihayafuru fans where you can take pictures and buy souvenirs or other merch. Overall, it was a really enjoyable experience. The long travel time was worth it! Visited all the way from the Philippines 🥰
Alliah R — Google review
If you are a fan of karuta or the anime Chihayafuru, then this shrine is a great place to visit. The vibrate red stands out, and you see the places the show visits. If you are not aware of karuta, it is still a nice sight, but a bit of a detour compared to the rest of the shrines in Kyoto. The shrine is free. There's a clock museum at the same spot, which costs about 300yen to visit. Not much there unless you want to see some old clocks.
Tommy O — Google review
Omi Jingu is a shrine in a forest, which doubles as an anime pilgrimage destination. It was an iconic place in popular anime & manga Chihayafuru, which I followed religiously during my high school years. I visited on a weekday afternoon and there were only a few people around. The building was vibrantly vermillion and displayed many karuta-related exhibits such as the Hyakunin Isshu cards. My entire visit was so serene. Strolling the lush forest, taking the famous stairs, and exploring the hall felt like retracing Chihaya's footsteps before a tournament. I could almost hear poem no. 17 being recited in my head. They also have a karuta community hall that sells Chihayafuru merchandise. It's Omi Kangakukan on Google Maps and only a short walk from the shrine main building.
Janice L — Google review
It is a well-known shrine located in Shiga prefecture that is visited by both locals and tourists. The shrine is related to the Karuta, a traditional Japanese card game that is also featured in the anime "Chihayafuru". I also recommend going to the community center if you want to see the Chihayafuru displays and souvenirs, and if you're lucky, you can witness students playing a Karuta game competition on the 2nd floor. If you are going to Omi Jingu by foot, you can either reach it from Omi-Jingu station or from Minami Shiga station.
夏美 — Google review
Tucked into the quiet hills of Otsu, Ōmi Jingu is more than a shrine — it’s a place where even the wind seems to whisper. There were no cicadas crying. Just stillness. A hush so deep it felt sacred. The vermilion torii stood tall against a canvas of green, and the shrine itself shimmered with a timeless grace. Each step on the gravel path echoed like a soft footnote in a story written centuries ago. Here, tradition lives not in grand gestures, but in silence — in the worn wood of the prayer plaques, the gentle ripples of the water basin, the breath you didn’t realize you were holding. Ōmi Jingu doesn’t shout. It doesn’t need to. It simply lets you feel — and in that quiet, you remember who you are.
KY T — Google review
It is an entrance-fee-free shrine, with rather contemporary religious/ shrine building structure. Outside the Shrine, there is a quasi-forest style yard which can be attractive for sunny weather, although it can be somewhat dark in the cloudy weather because it has so many tall trees. Inside the Shrine, the pebble stone floor is well maintained for being Zen-style yard, although visitors may not sense its beauty and just step on it. The Shrine is famous for the religious praying and celebration of new baby at age 1 and, then, age 3, 5, and 7. That is the reason why many parents would bring their babies and young child/children to the Shrine for the religious service.
Ben H — Google review
We visit this shrine last time for the first visit or (Hatsunode) The japanese tradition. Even though there’s a fear to the corona virus people, locals are falling in line others forgetting the social distances to each other because the shrine is crowded.
Ai O — Google review
Ohmi Jingu Shrine is a place that defies emotional understanding unless you have actually been there. Words are relatively easy to convey and can be used to convey more simplistic emotions, but what words can convey an emotional context that I have never experienced but yet will forever change me in ways I have yet to fully understand.

Mii-dera Temple

Buddhist temple
Sights & Landmarks
The Onjo-ji Temple, also known as Mii-dera, is a vast Buddhist temple complex featuring a grand entrance gate, a three-tier pagoda and seasonal cherry blossoms. Admission fee is 600 yen with some mild stair climbing required but navigation around the temple is easy. A treasure house costing 300 yen is also available for exploration but photos are not permitted inside the buildings. The temple dates back to ancient times and offers stunning views of Biwa canal.
It’s nice but visit only if you have some time. It had gigantic Koi Fish and beautiful rock formations. I found it bit commercial, to visit main alters, one has to pay.
Manpreeth N — Google review
Beautiful and large temple grounds with signs in multiple languages and my favourite section was a small bridge with many koi fish you could feed with a bag of fish food for 100¥. I spent about 2hrs here. Make sure to go all the way to the top for great views of the grounds and Lake Biwa.
Matthew F — Google review
I’ve visited twice, I enjoy the quiet vibe and the surrounding area makes me feel like I’m in a different world. The temple with the reflective flooring is also quite extraordinary. The staff are ok.
Téa E — Google review
I went after 9AM on Nov 13, 2025. Fall colors have not fully developed, but it was still a beautiful and serene setting. As someone else previously pointed out, I agree that entering through the Niomon (Daimon) Gate is better than entering via the Somon (Grand) Gate. For one thing, the sequential enumeration of structures on the guide map you receive from the ticket booth starts with the Niomon Gate, taking you on a walk that allows you to see the whole temple complex in a rather organized manner. In the 4 hours that I was there, I pretty much saw all the structures, taking pictures and video recordings along the way. The (free) toilets are clearly marked on the map. The one I used near the Niomon Gate, at the end of my visit, was clean. Entry ticket costs JPY600. Among other activities with additional charges, ringing the bell at the Bell Tower near the Kondo costs JPY300, and entering the Miidera Temple Cultural Property Storehouse also costs JPY300. I am glad I went to visit this temple complex , but I prefer the setting at Ishiyamadera.
Joe P — Google review
A rather large temple complex which costs 600 yen to enter. Note that there is some light climbing up stairs if you are immobile but it's easy getting around this temple. Expect to spend around an hour here and there is also a treasure house so did not enter which costs 300 yen. No photos inside the temple buildings. Would look great in autumn and crowds smaller as it's not Kyoto

beautiful temple with careful arranged garden. great memory visiting here. save one star for next visiting

Hiyoshi Taisha, located in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is a serene shrine complex set amidst lush grounds with trees, bridges and a flowing stream. It is also known as Yamanote Shrine and holds historical significance dating back to the 8th century. The shrine's buildings were reconstructed in the late 16th century after being destroyed by war in 1571.
Quiet shrine at a much less touristy area to enjoy autumn leaves. Plenty of walking space and very clean toilets. Definitely a place to visit if you are into Shinto shrine and autumn colours. Y$500 to enter.

Went there as Hinatazaka46 made a trip there for their hit campaign. Grounds were large and a bit confusing. Made up my mind to climb to see the big rock (金大嚴)up on the hill and oh boy was it tough. I rushed through it in around 20 minutes as it was turning dark. Respect to the members who climbed it after dragonboating.
Nassux — Google review
Really peaceful and serene shrine. Shiga is definitely an excellent spot to escape from the crowds in Kyoto. This place is good for all seasons and the autumn colours just made it that much better for viewing pleasure! There was also a free night illumination that makes this such a must see spot !
Henry C — Google review
Hiyoshi Taisha, located in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan, is a Shinto shrine with a rich history dating back over 2,000 years. Founded during the reign of Emperor Sujin, it has served as a sacred site dedicated to the deity Hiyoshi Okami, associated with water and agriculture. The shrine gained prominence during the Heian period and became closely linked to the powerful Minamoto and Taira clans. Hiyoshi Taisha is unique for its syncretic worship of Shinto and Buddhism, exemplified by its connection to the nearby Enryaku-ji, a prominent Buddhist temple on Mount Hiei. The annual Sanno Matsuri festival, held in June, is a highlight, attracting visitors with vibrant processions and traditional performances. Throughout centuries, the shrine has undergone reconstruction due to natural disasters and conflicts. Today, it stands as a cultural and historical treasure, reflecting Japan's enduring spiritual traditions and the integration of Shinto and Buddhist influences.
Divertimento — Google review
Hiyoshi Taisha is an old Japanese shrine, and it has a forest-style yard and garden which has numerous old, tall trees for more than several hundred years. In addition, the visitors can see the clean flow of water circulating or flowing through various temples in the Shrine area. But the Shrine may be in crisis probably due to insufficient fund for the maintenance and repair. For example, most of the tree-bark roofs of the Shrine's worshiping temples are in damaging conditions. Also, a few lion-shaped Guards in front of the worshipping shrines or temples are also in damaged condition. Visitors who are interested in the Shrine can take the same Keihan commuter train to visit Ishiyama-dera Temple of the Otsu area. Alos, there are various other smaller temples outside Hiyoshi Taisha, between subway station and Shrine's main gate.
Ben H — Google review

Nestled in the serene landscapes of Shiga Prefecture, Takebe Taisha Shrine stands as a testament to Japan's rich spiritual heritage. This ancient Shinto shrine is dedicated to the legendary prince Yamato Takeru, whose revered wooden statue draws pilgrims seeking blessings for prosperity and success. The shrine complex is adorned with lush gardens and tranquil fountains, creating an inviting atmosphere for visitors.
Wonderful Ichinomiya shrine! Nice to visit if you’re headed to Hikone castle or Lake Biwa. Don’t listen to google about the final turn though, it’s blocked. Go in through the main Tori-gate. There’s a famous bridge walking distance from the shrine too. This is one of the many places dedicated to Takeru. There’s some funny manga-style history of him with the shrine at the front walk up. Inside has some fun areas to check out. 1) hand washing station has motion sense. Very cool and not wasteful. Inside the grounds, to the left, is a water instrument you can listen to with a bamboo stick amplifier. In the back left corner are rocks you can take (bigger to buy) where you write a wish and when it comes true you return the rock. Behind the shrine are “three treasures” The first is fossilized flowers of the imperial flower supposedly showing something like the strength of Japan, the middle is a mirror, possibly to connect to the Imperial regalia mirror at Isa-grand shrine. And last, is a rock that says it’s mentioned in japans national anthem. The “stone that becomes a mountain/building/foundation of Japan” but it’s an ugly chunk of cement. I was laughing. You can buy cool clam shell Enma, and visit the small Taiko bridge and koi pond and waterfall too. Amazing little area, nice free parking, and beautiful bathrooms with vending machines. Highly recommend a visit.

(Translated by Google) On October 20th, I visited Takebe Taisha Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Omi Province in Otsu City, Shiga Prefecture. This historic shrine enshrines Yamato Takeru no Mikoto as its central deity. The grounds were surprisingly quiet on weekday mornings, so much so that the only sound you could hear was the birdsong. The grounds are close to the parking lot, and the grounds are flat, making it ideal for those with mobility issues. To be honest, I wasn't expecting great photos, but the contrast of the green trees and the beautiful fountain in the grounds had me snapping away. Weekdays are less crowded, so you can have the front of the shrine all to yourself, making it a great photo spot. This Ichinomiya shrine retains its tranquil beauty. (Translated by Google) I visited the temple in 2016 and received a goshuin (temple seal). Within the temple grounds, there are several signs explaining the story of Yamato Takeru and a historical timeline not only in text but also with pictures and photos, and I thought this type of explanation was quite unusual. As it is a distance from the JR station, it might be better to get off at Karahashimae Station on the Keihan Ishiyama-Sakamoto Line (you can transfer from the JR line) or Ishiyama-dera Station (included in the Ishiyama-dera Temple visit package), which are the nearest stations. (Translated by Google) It's the end of September, and although the cicadas are still chirping, the breeze makes it easy to be active even in the heat. The entrance for car visitors was difficult to find. If you head straight from Seta Karahashi Bridge, you'll find a sign announcing the parking area. There are toilets and vending machines in the parking lot. There are no overwhelming trees, and it's not a steep climb to the top, but there is an atmosphere where you can clearly hear the breathing of ancient times. For some reason, it feels comfortable. It was my first time seeing "sazare-ishi" (pebbles). And I could hear the national anthem "Kimigayo" (national anthem), it's been a while since I've heard it, and it feels like it's washing away the dirt from my heart. The carp in the pond are cool, even with the sunlight filtering in through the fountain. Among them is a particularly large, giant golden carp. Relaxing sightseeing cruise around the south end of the lake. Has options which include meals on the cruise but we went for the normal ticket. Good way to see the shores of the lake. Cruise ship is very smooth sailing

A fun little boat trip, Its all in Japanese as most tourist attractions are, but we had fun. The music at the end is a highlight, make sure to grab an instrument!

This cruise does a small or larger circuit on the lake depending on your selection of time. 30, 60 or 90 minutes. You get a good view of buildings and other structures near the lake. It is very close to the train station.

Cool ship with a nice view around Biwa lake. Snacks and drinks are served onboard for a price. The entertainers are nice and have a singing 20min performance at the end. Be advised, everything is japanese only. That being said, you can still enjoy it even if you don't understand. The sky deck is too bright on the night cruise.

This is a 1 hour worth it trip if you want to see some hilights of OTSU. It's a 1 hour cruise that will show you views of lake Biwa. There are 4 restaurants to choose from and a buffet options you can try. Staff and hosts are really friendly and make sure you have a great time. The ride starts with 3000 yen onwards if you want to add food option there are other choices too. Wonderful experience in Otsu. It's a 20min walk from the station.

I did the one hour cruise at 15:00. It was a nice little cruise to enjoy the fresh air and the view of the nearby hills. The ship is very beautiful and in a good condition. You can buy drinks and snacks on board. There are also restrooms.
Patrick S — Google review
While the cruise itself was enjoyable around Lake Biwa, the buffet addition was not worth it. For the price, it was really disappointing. The food was not very fresh and they did not refill any of the trays so I didnt even get to try several of the meat options. We also went on Halloween, so 90% of the choices were all pumpkin dishes, if we had known that before hand we would have declined the buffet.

Biwako Valley Ropeway is a scenic mountain retreat in Japan that boasts of stunning views of the surrounding areas. It offers various tourist activities such as skiing, hiking, and a ride on an aerial tramway up to its peak. Visitors can also enjoy refreshments at the cafe and restaurant located at the summit with panoramic views. Although it may be pricey, the experience is worth every penny spent.
Have great experiences here. We are lucky cause it's just re-open atv21/12/24. Still not many people. If you want to play snow, you must rent their clothes and pants and hand gloves also. If not, it's too cold and wet.
Yong M — Google review
This ropeway has beautiful surroundings, and gorgeous views on the way up to the top. Depending on when you arrive, you may have a few minutes waiting for the ride up, as it runs every 30 minutes. The ascent and descent is very quick, so please be warned if you are a little scared of heights. The carriage you ride in is very large, and can accommodate many people. But due to the speed, the carriage can sway a little as it traverses over the supports. So if you are a little scared, then I recommend riding in the middle, and let the many people hide the view out the windows. This ropeway is the most expensive one I have ridden so far. However the carriage is clean and large, with plenty of staff to help.

Amazing place to visit. 20 out of 10. The cable rides are so fun! If you come during the summer, the temperature up the mountains are so much cooler. The interactive games are suitable for adults and children. A coffee shop is available at the top of the cable rides. Be sure to try their cold chocolate drink, the raw chocolate taste is so refreshing! Their donuts are also so tasty!😋 Don’t try the matcha cold drink though, it’s tastes funky. And their zip line activity is not as fun as they market it to be. It’s expensive and only lasts for 10 seconds. Overall, do come to this spot. You won’t regret it

14Aug2025 Cloudy! We did not take the ropeway due to raining and cloudy. We would not miss it, next time.

Great views! We could not take the second ropeway up unfortunately due to high winds. It was quite cold and windy so be prepared for that. Staff was wonderful, cafe was decent enough and gave us a break from the cold!
Kristina T — Google review
Easy way to get to the top and get some nice shots of the lake. Don't come on a rainy day cause the visibility drops drastically after a certain height and it gets super windy up there. Otherwise, pretty cool spot to see the lake and bring kids to play around at the top!

Our first time skiing and snowboarding. Rental process is smooth, they accept cards for payment, and just keep in mind if you’re going as a first timer, the ski package is required (ropeway and lift) even if you don’t intend to use the lift. The snow was like fine crushed ice but since it was the first time touching snow, I was kind of expecting it will be a little softer. Overall the experience was nice, snacks in their restaurant was also good 👍🏻 for the bus, always make sure you have enough coins or card load

100% worth it! Beautiful memory and breathtaking views! Remember to apply extra sunscreen and bring an umbrella for the sun! Thank you for the amazing experience.

Curty rice here was mediocre. Nothing special. The drinks appearance looked good but taste wise, nothing to shout about. 2 stars 2150 yen for curty rice and drinks. But, the atmosphere and view was out of this world. Worth it. Recommended

I need 100 stars for this place. This is a jewel that is largely forgotten by the majority of the tourists. Therefore, it's never incredibly crowded here. It also helps that it is a big area! Biwako Terrace is on top of Mount Hira in Otsu. It's just a 35 minute train ride away from Kyoto. You need to get off at Shiga station, after which you can take the shuttle bus to the cable car for 300 yen. The cable car to the top costs around 2000 yen. But it's worth it!! At the top you have an INCREDIBLE view over Shiga Prefecture. You need to see for yourself, it's indescribable. Only then you get to realise how HUGE lake Biwa is. You have beautiful views over the mountain ranges in the area, and in the late afternoon if the light is right you will be treated with a spectacular view! You don't have to bring food because there are restaurants at the top. In the winter, this is THE place to go snowboarding or skiing. In summer, you can go zipline (with the best zipline view in all of Asia), test your fear of heights at the highest fun forest in the world, or have fun with your kids at the playground. It also offers amazing hiking paths that are among the most beautiful of Japan. While you're in Otsu, be sure to also actually visit the lake. It is never crowded, no matter where you have a swim or do water activities because it's so big and people are spread out all over the lake. I recommend swimming at Wani, a quiet town with a beautiful atmosphere. While there, be sure to eat at Ramen Fuji: best ramen in Japan! I also recommend visiting Ōmi Hachiman, a historic town that hasn't changed since early history. Near there, there is a hotel / restaurant where you can eat the BEST beef in the world: Ōmi beef (much tastier and softer than Kobe beef).

Enryakuji Kaikan is a temple lodging hotel located in the Hieizan mountain of Japanese Buddhism, offering stunning views of Lake Biwako. The hotel provides traditional vegetarian dishes and features a cafe, meditation classes, and hot spring baths. Guests can enjoy spacious Japanese-style rooms with full wifi service and partake in morning ceremonies for a rejuvenating experience. The serene atmosphere and breathtaking scenery make it an ideal place to unwind and recharge the soul.
Very convenient location to visit temples in Hieizan. Strictly speaking, this place is not a hotel but an accomodation named ‘Shukubo’ for buddhist visitors of temples. But now, anyone can stay here. Dinner and breakfast are so called ‘Shojinryori’, in which meat and fish are not used. There is nice public bath with lake view. In the cafe terria on the ground floor, we could enjoy tiramis and tea. The visitors of Enryakuji Kaikan are free of entrance fee for 3 areas of Hieizan. The whole accomodation is very clean. This is good place to enjoy Japanese atmosphere. Visitors can join in the morning worship in Konponchudo from 6:30 am.

If you like vegetarian food and are willing to shell out a bit more money I highly recommend eating here. The traditional Buddhist meal was absolutely amazing and with spectacular views! Visitors have praised the restaurant for serving some of the best unagi they've ever tasted, making it a must-visit destination for those who appreciate delicious Japanese cuisine in a peaceful setting.

(Translated by Google) This is one of Shiga's most famous eel restaurants. It was my first time there, and since it's located in the mountains, it feels like you're eating in a wealthy person's home. Both the building and the garden are beautiful. Apparently there are various grades of eel, but if you order the special grade, you'll be able to eat a very large, wild-caught eel. Even though it was big, you couldn't feel any bones, and it was stress-free, as if they'd removed the bones. The rice is apparently cooked in a large kamado (traditional Japanese cooking stove), and it was plump and fluffy. First of all, the portions are quite large, so if you have a small appetite, it's best to order a small portion. I managed to get a medium portion, but if I had known, I would definitely order half the small portion. lol It's that much...it's amazing in this day and age, though. The sauce is quite clam-heavy, so I think people from the Kanto region might find it a little underwhelming. It's delicious, though. It's a restaurant I'd like to take the family to on a special occasion. If you're heading south of Lake Biwa, I recommend this place!

(Translated by Google) The atmosphere is nice and the food is delicious. In my personal opinion, I'm not sure if it's farmed eels or not, but the eel skin is thick and squishy, which reduces the texture. I remember that in the past (more than 20 years ago), the skin was crispy and delicious, and I would often go there regularly. I wonder if it's just the way things are these days.

(Translated by Google) The staff are polite and friendly. The traditional eel sauce is delicious. It's not too sweet, with just the right amount of nostalgic flavor. It seems like eel prices are rising every year, and the eel pieces being served are getting smaller! The tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) in the Kinshi-don (golden rice bowl) uses three eggs, and the staff recommends their specialty, the Kinshi-don.

Spoon Moriyama is a highly enjoyable and rejuvenating place to visit. The ambiance is so comforting that it feels like a healing experience every time one goes there. One particular highlight of the restaurant is the all-you-can-drink Mlesna tea, which can be enjoyed alongside food for an additional fee at night. This tea is loved by many and it has become quite common to savor around 10 cups during a visit.

(Translated by Google) I visited the cafe restaurant "SPOON Moriyama Branch" in Moriyama City, Shiga Prefecture. I ordered "Seiromushi" which I had heard was recommended, but it was even more delicious than I expected! Steamed rice steamed with plenty of vegetables, meat, and seafood, the natural flavors of the ingredients were brought out. In particular, the sweetness of the vegetables stood out, making it a healthy yet satisfying dish. There are a wide variety of sauces to accompany the dish, so you can enjoy the variety of flavors without getting bored. Also, the Mlesna tea that came with the set went perfectly with the bamboo steamer. The staff offers new flavors of tea one after another, so you can enjoy many different flavors and be very satisfied. The inside of the restaurant has a calm atmosphere, and there is also terrace seating, so it would be nice to relax outside on a nice day. The parking lot was large and access by car was convenient. I think this restaurant is perfect for those who want to enjoy healthy meals, or those who are looking for a slightly special lunch or dinner. I would like to visit you again! The parking lot is located at the back of the store from the road. I am grateful that it is spacious. The restaurant was also spacious, with tables and sofas that could seat four people. I have a very good impression of this store with the friendly staff. This time I ordered dessert and free tea. While having dessert, we also had a total of 4 types of tea. This time, more than 80% of the participants were women, and the voices were louder. However, the tea and dessert were delicious, so we didn't mind and both of us had a great time. 😋Next time, I will order food. Another highlight is that you can enjoy Mlesna tea! When I visited around 12:00, it was quite busy. Reservations are also accepted for lunch. My salad lunch included a choice of octopus or salmon carpaccio, and I was torn between the two, but I chose the bamboo steamer because I love bamboo steamers. All lunch sets come with tea and milk tea pudding, and for an additional ¥385, you can upgrade to a parfait. ・Steamed Aurora Salmon 2,090 yen ・Shofuku Carbonara 1,760 yen ◼︎Steamed Aurora Salmon First, I was served a black tea with a jasmine and apricot aroma. I was surprised to hear that the aroma changes as I sipped it. The jasmine aroma was vibrant, and the sweet apricot aroma lingered in the aftertaste. I enjoyed the sweetness without adding any sugar. My second cup was a four-berry drink. I tasted blueberry on top, followed by the sweet and sour notes of raspberry and strawberry. This one also had a refreshing sweetness to it. The third cup was Lemon Earl Grey. The light aroma of lemon was followed by the vibrant aroma of Earl Grey, and I really liked this one, as it allowed me to fully enjoy the bitterness of the tea leaves. Ponzu sauce Salt Corn sauce Wasabi soy sauce The vegetables included eggplant, daikon radish, red radish, potato, pumpkin, eggplant, zucchini, cabbage, and, as a Shiga Prefecture specialty, red konjac, which I'm happy about. ♡ I love red konjac. All the vegetables were infused with the aroma of the steamer, enhancing their sweetness and allowing me to enjoy the umami of the ingredients. They were so sweet and delicious even without any seasonings. The sweet potato was sweet, but the potato was even sweeter and more fluffy. ♡ As you'd expect from Norwegian salmon, it was very fatty, but because it was thinly sliced, it wasn't too heavy, and when eaten with lots of cabbage, the flavor became even milder. However, it was quite heavy for me, so I ended up leaving some. I don't usually like rice, but the steamer enhanced the sweetness and left the center of the rice, making it incredibly delicious.♡ It looks like a generous portion, but it was thinly layered, so it was a little too much for me, but I think even women could eat it without any trouble. The milk tea pudding was incredibly smooth and had a rich milk aroma.♡ The lingering aroma of tea leaves a gorgeous lingering scent, leaving a refreshing aftertaste without a heavy feeling. It felt more like a bavarois than a pudding. I didn't try the carbonara, but it seemed very chewy. It was a very satisfying lunch, with plenty of vegetables and tea. The pudding was delicious.♡ (Original)

Extra, all staffs including the boss are super super nice, you would receive warm welcome in front of the restaurant already. Well, on the day of the event, we all started at 18:30, so we arrived without being late. There were 6 seats at the counter, and there were 4 people next to us, the kind of people you always see at a restaurant like this, all looking like celebrities and pretending to be gourmet people who don't know what they do. Ordered a beer. The system required us to toast together, and thanks to the person on the side ordering sake and lemon sour together, we had to wait until the bubbles ran out. in advance Steamed rice comes out and I suddenly don't like it. If it's fermented it's delicious, it's edible, but it's extremely addictive and sour. Kumquat jelly. The kumquats were completely cooked and the eggs were dry. After this, there was a raging raw meat festival and it was pretty tasty, but... There were several types of pottery, but they seemed normal. The salad came out in a bowl full enough for 3 people. The steamed vegetables in the first half were so voluminous that it looked like a sumo club. The drinks are cheap and they have Japanese sake etc. The overall amount is large, so it makes you feel hungry. The cost performance is cheap at 18,000 yen for two people. Due to the location, I don't have many opportunities to go there, and the other day I finally visited the club at night. Counter course limited to 6 seats. The restaurant is more modern and casual than I expected, although the reservation system and location gave me the impression that it was a bit more reserved. I won't go into details as the contents of the dishes may change slightly depending on the season and availability of ingredients, but the quality of the ingredients is as expected. All delicious. Also, if you order sake, you will be given a choice to match your dish, and it will be served one after another until you stop. I drink too much lol. And perhaps because we want you to eat both this and that, the volume is incredible. There were three couples sitting at the counter this time, but all the women stopped using their chopsticks halfway through the meal. Even the male team felt like they were barely making it. I feel like if the portions were a little more modest, it would be more delicious till the end. 10,000 per person with plenty of alcohol, which is a bit pricey, but since I don't get to go there very often, I guess it's okay. I took a seat at the table in the back left. I ordered a large serving of Hubei Black, and my wife ordered Rich Salt. The rice bowl arrived in less than 5 minutes. Although it is called black, it is a completely different soup from Toyama Black or Koriyama Black. It's dark because it's made with tamari soy sauce, but the soup is light and doesn't have the spiciness of soy sauce. The noodles are medium thick and curly. It has a bit of a chewy texture, but the water content is low, so it goes well with the soup. The char siu is creamy and delicious. Takeout Restaurant
Nestled in a compact space, Yasu no Ossan Onigiri Shokudo is a charming eatery that specializes in traditional Japanese rice balls, known as onigiri. This family-run establishment exudes warmth and dedication, evident through their exceptional service and the quality of their food. The atmosphere is enhanced by a tablet displaying videos about the origins of their ingredients, such as rice and miso for soup.
Damn, didn't know that onigiri could be this good and this filling. Those that are coming from 7-11 onigiri will experience true flavour and true onigiri size. These onigiris are humongous and they don't skimp out on fillings either. Three, along with a miso soup or a drink makes for an excellent lunch. Definitely worth taking a detour to visit this spot. The servers are also all so friendly and try their best with serving tourists in English.

Very yummy and filling onigiri. The ingredients were high quality and the rice tasted amazing! Order two or more onigiri and you can get a set with miso soup. The miso soup is full of vegetables and in itself is very delicious. I highly recommend the ikura onigiri and the mentaiko and cream cheese onigiri which were the best ones ordered. I had a vibe that this is a family run small business. You can sense staff dedications on high level of service and food quality. On our table, there is a tablet replaying video on the sources of raw materials used..rice and miso (for miso soup). Luxurious with red bean paste, shiratama dumplings, and warabi mochi! ``Hojicha Roll Cake & Mini Matcha Soft Drinks'' is a masterpiece with a strong aroma of Hojicha, and it's one that girls love! Yuya

Izakaya restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Minamikusatsu, Yuya is a charming little restaurant that offers a cozy atmosphere perfect for adults. With its unique layout featuring a large communal table and a small counter with about six seats, it creates an inviting space for diners. The menu may be on the pricier side, but every dish is crafted to perfection—especially their fried offerings. Diners rave about the black and sour pork as well as seasonal fish dishes that are simply delightful.
It was amazing! 🥰The food was more than tasty, the service was so attentive and they put so many effort to make us feel welcome. We had a wonderful time - thank you for being such nice hosts! We had a lot of fun, especially with google-translator 😅 P.S.: The Tofu, the eggplant and the eel were outstanding!

(Translated by Google) I had heard that it had a nice atmosphere, but it's definitely a student town. On the day of the loss, it can't be helped that there are noisy students who are ruining the atmosphere. ``Put your shoes in the shoe closet'' comes first rather than ``Welcome'' (although there's nothing that comes after because it wasn't said). As I was looking at the menu, she placed another piece of paper on top of the menu and said, ``This is what I recommend, and since you went to the trouble of making a reservation, I want you to order this.'' I understand how you feel, but it's honestly unpleasant. You can clearly see the general's displeased face from the counter. Recommended for those who want to have fun. All of the food was delicious, and I would have gone again if it weren't for the quiet atmosphere and strange customer service. By the way, there is a warning that if you vomit inside the store (including the restroom), you will have to clean up the store + 10,000 yen. I thought this was a good example of the customer base. I was disgusted by the mismatched atmosphere and the poster, so I left the store early. I was able to eat more quietly at nearby Monte Rosa (lol) (Original)

The pork cutlet bowl with thickened sauce is delicious, but I actually prefer the pork cutlet-free thickened egg bowl like in the old days. You order using a tablet, but while the pamphlet-style menu at each table had a kids' menu, it wasn't listed on the tablet. We had to check with a waiter before we could order. We were shown to a tatami room, but there was some dust on the edge, which made me wonder if the place isn't cleaned often. We ordered a set meal, which was delicious. My child was a little restless, but they allowed him to use the tablet we used to order to watch a video. The owner was friendly and seemed nice, so I'd like to visit again. They have tatami rooms, sunken kotatsu tables, and even tables, making it a good choice for mid-sized gatherings like year-end parties. The restaurant resembles a large, average-sized house, and is fairly spacious. However, if you sit in the back, you'll have to take off your shoes, so be mindful of odors. There don't appear to be slippers, and the floor is a bit slippery, so you might be a little hesitant to walk barefoot. The parking lot seems to be able to accommodate about 20 cars, surrounding the restaurant. The photo shows a thick pork cutlet bowl and a horumon set meal...they were delicious. The value is also good. However, I couldn't help but notice the slippery texture of the condiments, floor, and table edges...I wonder why. So overall, I'd rate it 3.80-4.05 stars. International airport
Osaka International Airport is a hub for domestic flights and offers convenient rail service to Kyoto, Kobe, and other areas in Osaka. Nearby accommodations include Guest House Yadomaru, located just 500 meters from Tempozan Ferris Wheel, and Hotel Royal Classic Osaka in the city center. The airport provides easy access via monorail with clean facilities, fast internet, diverse shopping options, and a variety of dining choices available for travelers.
I was really impressed with Osaka airport in Tokyo, also known as Itami airport for its service, shopping, and decor. From its cute airplane mascot stuffed animals to the colourful moss mural, it brought life to the airport, which can be cold and lifeless. The shopping had interesting stores with great gift option, wonderful food, including soul satisfying noodle soup and ramen, to lovely treats. Gaming chairs at long tables and the sheer variety of seating and tables options was also a lovely touch and greatly appreciated. I was also shocked to see staff physically catching the luggage on the conveyor belt so the bags didn’t drop and get damaged. A woman was there right away when the conveyor belt started and caught the bags until another associate came to take over. That just doesn’t happen nowadays and it shows how much the staff cares. I also appreciated the Halloween decorations and the real plants that made the airport a living place. The Itami airport is not just a place to get on a plane, but a lovely way to explore and experience Japan as well!

Convenient for the north side of Osaka, compact, clean, efficient. In fun facts, although the airport retains the “international” in its name, it serves only domestic routes. And Itami is of course in Hyogo rather than Osaka; the airport is on the border and has land in both jurisdictions. Competes with the bullet train.
Timothy P — Google review
It is one of the safest and cleanest domestic airports in Japan. Although it may have physical limitations and selected food and souvenir items, its restaurants and restrooms are good enough to ease the burdens of long travel. We look forward to flying in more domestic flights in the future.

We fly from Itami airport to Narita airport. The check in and luggage process were smooth and good, JAL counters were in North gate. There are some shops and restaurants before and after the security check. Very convenient and not so crowded. Plenty of sitting area to have some snacks from vending machines and souvenir shops. Access to Itami airport is quite easy and convenient. We use Midosuji subway to Senri-Chuo and change to Osaka Monorail. Hassle-free and all within 1000 yen.

Kansai International Airport

Kansai International Airport, located on a man-made island in Osaka Harbor, serves the greater Osaka area and offers convenient rail access as well as an adjacent hotel. Travelers can easily explore nearby attractions such as Wakayama Castle, Marina City, and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes during layovers of a few hours. Additionally, the airport is connected to various train stations within Osaka City and beyond, providing easy access to shopping, dining, and recreational options.
A large but very well-designed airport with a large selection of quality shops and restaurants and snack bars with a good selection of refreshments at relatively reasonable prices. The airport is very easy to get to, both by taxi and via the airport express. The modern security control is also very comfortable, as you no longer have to take electronic devices and hygiene products out of your hand luggage. As a passenger, I was very satisfied every time I used the airport's services.

Arrived at Terminal 2 for the first time in early July recently by budget Peach airline. The plane was parked out in the tarmac and had to walk with no shade to the terminal building. It was also quite a bit of walk to the immigration section. There were a few kiosks to register first and then join the long queue for the immigration counters. To get to the city by train, must first get on a free shuttle bus to Terminal 1 which is where the train station is The shuttle was efficient and it was just a short ride. Overall it was not so bad, just a process to go through like most airports.
Google L — Google review
Check-in crew was professional and quick, security check was smooth and fast as well. It was my first time in KIX airport (departure) and I wasn’t aware there’s an additional shuttle ride required to get to my gate; thinking it’s just right around the corner while I casually shopped around for more souvenirs and a meal for in-flight. When I come to realize that a shuttle was required, I was worried I’d be late. I usually leave sufficient time if not more for boarding but that was a different story. Ofc, it was partially my fault too for not familiarizing with a foreign new airport. They have limited restaurants around the area I was going before the shuttle and a particular Japanese restaurant felt very hostile. The gift shop was very packed and was rather small with limited choices. The queue took forever which ended up wasting around 10-15mins for me and they weren’t very professional either. Had to walk quite a distance (two vending machines away) from my gate to a different vending machine to find some cola. Apparently Coca Cola isn’t that popular so it’s not available in all vending machines. Luckily I had plenty of time left to get a soda to cool off.

KIX recently had a renovation. The terminal looks newer, more shops and restaurant comparing with the past. It is also a very clean airport . Custom and security check were fast and efficient .staff were nice too. Luggage collection was also fast and smooth. Easy access to public transport. But KIX has one thing not as good as the other major airport in Japan . Usually it is overcrowd during the mooring. Especially the international departure . Maybe the space is limited , sometimes morning flights are really a nightmare . Anyway , I appreciate the Japanese hospitality and they are always great , clean , fast and efficient .

Very modern and clean with clear English signs. Many seats and toilet. However, the seats with plug are not enough. Many food stalls are provided but most of them are quite expensive. The souvenir ahop and duty free provide lots of stuff that something cheaper than in town shopping😆 but close very early. At 9.30pm, many shops were already closed including the lounge!!!! About the immigration is quite slow, take long time waiting. You can get in town with many ways for example airport limousine bus, train.

Kobe Airport

International airport
Kobe Airport is a regional airport located in the coastal city of Kobe, Japan. It offers a unique experience with its runway observation deck and rooftop gardens. The airport provides direct-rail service to Sannomiya, making it easily accessible for travelers. Situated on an artificial island south of Port Island, it serves various destinations including Ibaraki, Ishigaki, Kagoshima, Naha (Okinawa), Nagasaki, Sapporo and Tokyo (Haneda).
The train station is right at the doorstep of the airport, conveniently connecting you to Sannomiya station. It has coin lockers at 2F. 600 yen/ day for the large ones and 400 yen/ day for the smaller ones. We took an airport limousine (bus) from Osaka Umeda station (sakurabashi guchi, 2番), which costs 1000 yen and took ~1 hour. There's an open air observation deck at probably 3F, with a big brocolli statue.

It is small with one store inside after security. Ana and solaseed are to the left in arrival at terminal one. Bathrooms are ok with one squat unit. Other toolsets are modern but it’s a roulette wheel with the doors. There is many cafes and shops before check-in and security. Portliner train took 17 minutes from the city. Lovely city airport, I liked it. Domestic flights board ten minutes before departure and check in plus security closes 20 Minutes before which is good but stressful for the European and American 30 minutes before boarding time and 60 minutes before check in time.

Very convenient airport. Quiet and very quick to get through check-in and security. There is very little to do here though. So do your best to minimize any expected waiting time. There are a few restaurants and a cafe, the choice is exceptionally limited however. Once through security though there is nothing! Be warned. It is however very clean and efficient, which is always pleasant when travelling! Plus the staff are incredibly helpful and courteous which makes everything feel smooth and easy.

The airport was built on an artificial island, connected to the city via train, and to Osaka Kansai by speed boat. It was clean. Check in and security screening was fast. AirDo staff at Kobe was funniest and friendliest ones ever. They were holding teddy bear, dancing and waving to passengers while were boarding the plane.
