Excellent beautiful shrine and a nice overview from the top worth it to walk up and down. Also very convenient if you can't walk for so long you can take the ropeway for ¥300 per ride up and down.
High above the city, where the wind carries whispers of history through the trees, I found something quietly sacred — Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine. Riding the cable car up the forested slopes of Mount Otokoyama, I felt like I was being lifted not just through nature, but through time. At the top, the shrine stood with quiet dignity — centuries of prayer and presence carved into every beam and stone. The moment I stepped beneath the towering torii gate, a stillness settled in my chest. The bustle of the world below faded. Only the soft rustle of leaves, the chirp of birds, and the crisp Kyoto air remained. I wandered the grounds slowly, tracing the contours of the ancient buildings, marveling at the harmony between architecture and earth. The main hall, a national treasure, stood as if it had always belonged to the mountain itself. It wasn't just a visit. It felt like a conversation — between the soul and something far greater. I came looking for tradition. I left with peace.
Awesome huge shrine dedicated to Japan's God of war, hachiman. Short walk and cable car away from the nearby train station. Super convenient. Basically no people, nice views of Kyoto. A true hidden gem.
This shrine has 2 entrances that I was aware of. I cannot recall if there are more. There is one by cable car and another one going upstairs - a long trek. We went up with the cable car and went out through the stair exit/entrance. During this time one of the Tori was being reconstructed/restored so we didn't have the chance to see that when entering the main temple. There you can find goshuin masters and some souvenirs. The shrine is surrounded by marvelous flora and fauna. Beautiful birds and really interesting insects. I would say it certainly is a purifying trek with some beautiful scenic spots. No need to pay for entrance, only for cable car and transport.
Such a wonderful place to explore with no crowds at all! Ride the cable car up to the temple! Iwashimizu Hachimangū is a large shrine complex located on top of Mt. Otokoyama, surrounded by nature and a beautiful view. Free entrance.
I like this place because of the access to the top by cable car, the scenery is even more beautiful if you come in the fall, there is also a monument to Thomas Alva Edison at the top, an observatory, and a beautiful temple. When I was here, the front part was being renovated. So I only took photos at the front. The people around the temple are also very friendly.
Very serene and scenic location devoid of foreign tourists. Had a short tranquil walk around the area after going up the cable and has a nice restaurant near.
A spiritual oasis that encompasses bamboo Zen forest, shrine, and quirky monuments. There is a brutalist architecture chicken establishment on the grounds.

This a rather well know attraction in the Kyoto area for hanami or Sakura season in Japan. You’ll find people of all ages enjoying the cherry blossoms 🌸. The season is about a month or so in length, occurring earlier every year due to climate change. So no matter when you come, expect it to be crowded. Ignore the usual—people taking photos of themselves in traditional dress or the screaming children. Find a quiet place under a tree like we did and enjoy nature for an hour or two. A nice way to spend a morning. 🌞⛅️
Went here on a day trip from Osaka, didn't know that there was a festival going on (sakura matsuri). The cherry blossoms were a sight to behold and had a blast walking through the festival while having snacks
It’s a beautiful place to enjoy hanami (sakura viewing). During sakura season, the riverbank is lined with lots of cherry blossom trees, creating a stunning sakura tunnel that stretches far along the walking path. There is also a sakura festival held during this time. It brings a lively atmosphere to the area. It can get very crowded, especially on weekends, but the beauty of the blossoms makes it worth it.Perfect for enjoying the fleeting beauty of spring.
A beautiful place to go for the sakura season. The sakura tunnel is spectacular. It is also relatively quiet and most people are local, there were very few foreign tourists. There are also many food and drink stalls and toilets. I would return here whenever I am in Japan in spring.
So many sakura here, and you can enjoy your picnic while cherry blossoms here. No tickets needed, no time limit.
been there 2 apr 2019 and the sakura not full blossomed. that being said, i highly recommend this spot coz it’s spacious for everyone! the 1300m-ish long sakura tree tunnel means you don’t have to fight or wait for a particular sakura tree. take the train to yawatashi station and follow the crowd to cross the bridge. you can prepare a floor mat for picnic after snapping 1000 shots. there are small food booths, toilets and a smoking tent (could be only during the sakura season, check before you go!)
Amazing park with great views and clean. Enjoyed the wall and all beautiful sakura
Such a lovely place to go 🌹 For 2025, 13/4 is the last day of sakura blossom :)

Very photographic awesome place. Bit risky if you are going with active kids but rather than quite enjoyable.
In 1953 a bridge was built here to replace a ferry. It was a traditional 'nagarebashi', a bridge designed with a deck that could be swept away if the river reached full spate with a fierce flow. As long as the piers remain, the deck could be replaced. To minimize the catching of flotsam during inundation, nagarebashi have no rails along their edges. This makes for a different experience of river crossing, particularly if the deck is about 400 m, as at Kozuyabashi. Unfortunately, between 1953 and 2019 decks were washed away 23 times, and in 2011, piers were also destroyed. During reconstruction in 2016, the deck was raised 75 cm and the number of piers reduced from 73 to 40. While the bridge is less picturesque than it used to be, the experience of crossing it is still worth it. Nearby Shikisaikan is a farmers market at which there is also a restaurant serving local produce.
6 kilometers from trains station ,but you can go bikes,
Closed during rainy season.

(Translated by Google) It was a special experience to stroll across the Nagarebashi Bridge in the morning sun. 🌅 This time, the river was dry, so we were able to see the view from underneath the bridge. Next time, I'd like to visit during the season when the river is full and walk alongside the sound of the water flowing underneath the bridge. This picturesque, narrow bridge is also a place where dogs can meet, although some care may be needed for dogs that aren't good at passing each other.
(Translated by Google) The bridge was designed so that when the water level rose higher than the bridge's height, the planks would come off and the bridge would be washed away, but in recent years, this has happened three years in a row, so the bridge was rebuilt to raise the height and prevent it from being washed away. Although it has lost its charm, the views of the surrounding tea fields and distant mountains from the bridge are still very pleasant.
(Translated by Google) It's been decades since I last visited. I'm glad to see that it still exists in the same form as before. What surprised me was the clarity of the river. I remember it being much muddier in my memory. There were few prominent modern buildings within range of where I could take photos, which added to the atmosphere.

Last Sunday, May 15) I visited the Shōkadō Park in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture. It's a relatively large garden with several tea rooms, a drawing room and an art museum. It’s in honour of Shōkadō Shōjō (松花堂昭乗, 1584-1639), a Buddhist monk, painter, calligrapher and master of the tea ceremony who was a central figure in the glamorous Kan’ei culture of the early Edo period.
Lovely, quiet Japanese garden just down the road from Iwashimizu Hachimangu. Most of the buildings were under repair when I visited (5/2019) due to earthquake/typhoon damage, but the garden was still lovely anyway.
Lovely Japanese gardens with a few teahouses scattered around and a surprising variety of different kinds of bamboo.
It was pretty good. It was so quite that I forgot I was in the downtown. You can feel the nature!
lovely place. we requested a guide to walk us through the park. very educational.

Since Daikoku-no-do Hall was built in 1955, it has been nicknamed ``Doodle Temple'' because if you write your wish on the wall of the hall, it will come true. I see, the stone monument in the garden says to believe in God and write your wishes. There is a horizontal pine tree that reminds me of the old pine tree at Zenmineji Temple, a large ginkgo tree, and a stone Buddha statue for memorial services. Unfortunately, today is a weekday, so you can only take a walk.We recommend visiting on the designated Saturday and Sunday. I'm sure you can predict the story of 🌟5 there. Significantly less crowded than Nijo Castle. Definitely worth a visit.
They mention opening hours is until 5PM however the security guard told us no entry we are closed when I tried to visit at 3:40PM. Yet another place not following it'a own rules in this country, shame.

This temple is a must visit. Entrance fee is 500 Yen and you can take the bus to go here. The bus is crowded and has quite long intervals so you have to wait. Using taxi is also a good option because it’s just around 1.500 Yen and you can divide it with your friend😄 The temple has such a unique signature that you cannot find in other temple. The moment you enter, you will immediately say wow!! The Japanese truly preserve their heritage well and it shows in here. They let the statues to be grown by moss to let the history stands. It also says that you will be reminded of someone when you see one of these statues. It’s a fun way to look closely to each statue😊 This temple is small so you can spend just 20 minutes here and explore Arashiyama after this
Very interesting an magical place. Autumn colours makes it even better! We went there middle of November (2025), it was busy but not crazy busy with tourists. We also took a taxi to and from nearby area, because to go there - the bus didn’t show up and google maps instructions were not clear. There was no bus stop where maps said it would be to go there an getting back there was so many tourists to get on that bus. Anyway, the place is super nice, not so crowded as other areas and definitely very interesting. One of my favourite spots in Kyoto.
After a few days in Japan and having visited some other temples, I have to say this one is quite peculiar and unique. It’s easy to walk to the temple from the bamboo forest or train station, or you can take a bus/taxi. There are some ramps and steps there and it can be a little bit slippery if it has rained. At first glance, most of the statues seem similar but if you look closely, there are a lot of different and interesting ones. Everything was very clean and well kept. It’s 500 yen to enter.
Absolutely a must visit. 500 yen entrance fee. There are thousands of statues that are covered in moss with some quite humorous. There are many stairs here to climb . While no longer an off the beaten track location, it is very much worthwhile. A taxi from central Kyoto is much more efficient than the bus which is very crowded and takes about an hour. The taxi ride is about 30 minutes and about 5000 yen.
If you have the time to venture to Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple while in Kyoto, I would highly recommend visiting. Although a smaller temple, it is so charming and full of good energy. I would definitely stop here again. Tip: avoid September when it is still quite hot and humid.
Love the experience of being in this temple. It made me feel so at peace. Each face has a different expression. People back in the day must have been very luck to be here and have so much peace. It’s a very spiritual place and we must protect this place. It’s a must go!
We walked here from arashiama bamboo forest. It was uphill walk. But well worth it. It was already crowded by 10am. I loved the statues. It was beautiful and great experience. Highly suggested to go early.
Otagi Nenbutsu-ji is one of Kyoto’s most whimsical and underrated treasures. Tucked away in the quiet hills of Arashiyama, this temple is home to over 1,200 stone Rakan statues – each one carved with a different facial expression and personality. Some are smiling, others praying, some even laughing or pulling silly faces. Walking among them feels like being surrounded by a crowd of joyful, peaceful souls frozen in stone. The moss-covered statues, forested surroundings, and quiet atmosphere give the place a magical, almost otherworldly vibe. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but absolutely worth the detour for those seeking something truly unique and soulful.

Just 8-10 minutes walking from the train station. Very beautiful places where you can see many Sakura. Bicycle ride is not allowed.
great memory visiting here, especially when the sakura blooming. save one star for the next sakura season visiting.
A great place to admire the beautiful scenery of full cherry blossoms. People come here to picnic with friends and family under cherry trees, full with happy moods and laughters.
If you want to get rid of a big crowd(mostly the tourists -mine too 😝), this is a good place to chill up. Take a nap under the sakura trees is such a pleasing 😆
So sad to know & see the damaged tree but glad to see they are still alive! Here is a great place!
Said to be the best Sakura spot in Kyoto. 1.3km of Sakura tunnel.
Nice for cycling, running or walking. Or just to relax! There is an adjacent car park.
This place is awesome because it is full of Sakura 🌸~ People enjoy picnicking here.
