Art museum
Sights & Landmarks
The Newark Museum of Art stands as a vibrant cultural hub in New Jersey, offering an impressive array of art and science experiences. With admission starting at just $10, visitors can explore a diverse collection that spans the globe, featuring one of the nation's most extensive African art collections and ancient Mediterranean glasswork dating back 2,500 years. The museum boasts 20 rotating galleries showcasing Asian artworks alongside North and South American pieces from pre-Columbian times to contemporary works.
A hidden gem during my 9-hour layover—well worth the visit! I had a 9-hour layover at Newark Airport on my way back home, and Google recommended the Newark Museum of Art—so I decided to give it a shot. I took a bus from the airport and walked about 10 minutes to the museum. Totally worth the detour! The entry fee is very reasonable, especially considering everything they offer. As a student, I got a discount and paid only $10.99 for my ticket. A great deal for a museum this size and quality. If you're carrying heavy bags, don't worry—they don't allow large bags inside, but they offer a secure storage service and give you a token to collect your items later. That was super convenient and hassle-free. The museum itself is impressive, with three full stories of exhibits, ranging from historic artifacts to art collections. My personal favorite was the Ballantine House, a beautifully preserved home built in 1885 by John Ballantine. It was like stepping back in time. One quirky highlight was a board game called G.O.A.T. they used to play—it’s kind of like Monopoly, but with its own unique twist. I found that especially fascinating. The gift shop had some lovely items, perfect for souvenirs, and the staff was incredibly friendly and helpful throughout my visit. There's also plenty of entertainment and interactive exhibits for kids, making it a great spot for families as well. Whether you're in town for a few days or just have a long layover like I did, this museum is a fantastic place to spend a few hours. Highly recommended for both kids and adults!

Had an amazing time here celebrating my Twinny 's TINA Birthday ... The Made us so comfortable ... The hospitality was out of this world. They took care of each of us during the fun activities and we got to leave with a beautiful kente cloth ♥️🖤💚 It was a great time had by all. Felt like it was all of our birthdays 😀

Newark Museum was wonderful. The exhibits are outstanding. They had a excellent collection of topics represented by the material on display. The café had great coffee and the museum was not very crowded. Thoroughly enjoyed it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Must-Visit Gem in Newark — The Newark Museum of Art! 🎨✨ So, my cousin called me on a random weekday asking if I could do her a favor — be the auntie-on-duty and chaperone my niece’s school field trip since the parents weren’t available. I checked my calendar, saw a free day, and immediately said, “Yes, I’m in!” Come Wednesday morning, I met my niece at her school, hopped on the school bus with the students, and off we went to The Newark Museum of Art around 9 a.m. Everything was impressively organized — from check-in to the tour itself. The museum staff and tour guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and passionate about art and history. They walked us through each section, explaining the cultural background, artistic value, and historical stories behind every exhibit. I genuinely learned so much and gained a deeper appreciation for both global and local art. As someone who loves visiting art museums, I was amazed to see familiar pieces I’d once seen at the Atlanta Art Museum — right here in New Jersey! It’s like art finds a way to connect us wherever we go. The museum is very accessible and family-friendly. Parking was convenient, ramps and facilities were well-designed for visitors with disabilities, and all directions were clearly provided. Just a tip: book your tickets in advance, especially if you’re coming as a group of 10 or more. It saves you time and ensures a smooth experience. Due to privacy and safety, I didn’t take many photos inside since I was focused on keeping the kids safe, but trust me — the visuals, the vibe, and the educational experience are unforgettable. If you haven’t been, find time to visit The Newark Museum of Art. It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in art, culture, and history — and to truly understand the stories behind each masterpiece. Whether you’re a parent, educator, or just an art lover like me, this place is absolutely worth it! 💡 Highly recommended for school trips, families, or anyone looking to reconnect with creativity and culture right here in Newark.

Came to the Newark Museum of Art for their Art After Dark: Drip & Dagger event. This was my very first time ever getting to explore the Newark Museum of Art. My favorite part of the event was getting to tour the Ballantine House and getting to do the escape room during the event. They also have quite a few art installations to check out. Coming to one of there events was a good opportunity to see the Newark Museum. I noticed that they always have something going on at the museum. There are activities for the kiddos as well as adults. If you are looking for things to do around Jersey I definitely suggest checking out the Newark Museum of Art and looking at their social media page for upcoming events.

This is a great museum. It has three floors and a lot of different exhibits like native artists of North America innovators of the southwestern jewelry, the ballantin house, art of global Asia, Tibetan alters, Buddhist, and many more. They do have a small eatery. I didn't try it. I instead went outside to eat and then returned to finish the museum. The planetarium doesn't open until late November so I will be going back to check it out. I payed 10.60 with a student discount, if not it's 12 something. Overall, it's a great place to visit, catch up on history and see things from all over the world. It's also cute for kids because they have interactive activities for them.
Ali B — Google review
Kids had a great time. Would be 5 stars if family activity was open a little longer, not an issue just felt a little rushed. We really enjoyed the Ballentine house! Free tickets for military!

With a few hours to spare before leaving Newark, I slipped into the Museum of Contemporary Art—and it turned out to be time exceptionally well spent. I meandered from gallery to gallery, first soaking in bold American contemporary works, then unexpectedly pausing before early Mediterranean artifacts. In another space, a wall of 19th-century slave advertisements confronted me with the stark reality of people bought and sold little more than a century ago—an arresting reminder of history’s proximity. One room dazzled with explosions of color; the next offered a contemplative display of African art. In the span of a short visit, the museum delivered a remarkable breadth of art and emotion, transforming a quick stop into a far richer journey.

Performing arts theater
Concerts & Shows
The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) is a vast performing arts center and event venue that hosts numerous festivals and national acts. It is renowned for its beautiful theater, which offers excellent views of the stage from every seat. Adjacent to NJPAC is the renovated Military Park, featuring WholeFoods and Starbucks across the street. Visitors can also take advantage of the nearby Military Park Light Rail station to access Branch Brook Park, where they can marvel at breathtaking Cherry Blossoms in April.
Besides several famous arts center across the Hudson River, I don’t think there’s any other theaters that outclass NJPAC in the east coast. Awesome acoustic, beautiful viewing angles from everywhere, and just aesthetically pleasing. I will not hesitate to revisit this theater when my favorite artists are performing. Moreover, I am very pleased with the paid parking situation here.
Richard Y — Google review
Excellent theater / concert hall! Our family has attended various concerts and performances in NJPAC, and it never disappoints. The venue offers a clear stage view, great acoustics, and comfortable seating, making every visit a consistently enjoyable experience. It’s also a great alternative to the overpriced halls in Manhattan. We're definitely looking forward to visiting again.

I love this place! The history, architecture, restaurant, people who weren’t there except one who was an idiot~ but I spoke to the manager about him. Hopefully, he got fired.~ or at least very reprimanded! I come here a lot, and I will continue … The surrounding clubs are amazing.
Lisalee D — Google review
I was lucky to see the Stardew Valley Symphony of seasons here. The space is acoustically phenomenal, and the staff is superb. The merch table line ended up being huge, and the ushers quickly and calmly created order to the line amidst chaos. 10/10 would go to again
Abz — Google review
Great place for concerts. Sound is good even if you're up top teir 2. Parking is in a parking deck across the street. Usually some streets are blocked off, so leaving the event is really time consuming. The lite rail is less than a block away, so that's an option or an Uber from Penn station. They do sell drinks and beverages inside, pricey though. I bought something at Penn station. They have an elevator as well.

The New Jersey Performing Arts Center was such a beautiful spot to visit to see a show. I went there this past weekend for a comedy show and was very surprised with how clean and polished every thing looked. All staff I encountered were extremely friendly and accommodating. Literally everyone was so polite it kind of took me back! I would recommend to those who have not been to look online before you go in terms of parking or if you are looking to do a ride share.

Went here for a concert and it went amazing! Parking across the street was very easy, they have a lot of people helping you. The staff is so nice as well.

I love the New Jersey Performing Arts Center. I went to see Third Eye Blind in concert at the Prudential Hall on Friday June 20, 2025. Wonderful seating, not a bad seat in the house. Excellent acoustics. Great pre show refreshments lobby. Great staff. An excellent evening all the way around. It's close to Penn Station, Hilton Hotel and the Ironbound section of Newark where some great Spanish/Portuguese restaurants are located. I love Fornos of Spain on Ferry Street a couple of blocks up from the back entrance of Penn Station. Check out my review on that restaurant on Google Maps. I've been going there for many years.

Catholic cathedral
Sights & Landmarks
Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is a stunning example of French Gothic Revival architecture, boasting intricate designs and high ceilings crafted by skilled artisans using top-quality materials from around the world. Located in Newark, New Jersey, it is one of the largest basilicas in North America and houses the largest pipe organ ever built by Schantz Organ Co.
This majestic church strongly resembles European cathedrals with its stunning architecture and peaceful atmosphere. It’s a beautiful place that truly takes your breath away. I highly recommend stopping by, taking a few moments to sit inside, soak in the serenity, and reflect.

The catholic cathedral of Newark Arch Diocese. It is a huge church and it has many  beautiful stained glass windows. Many stone and marbles work inside and it has a very imposing structure both inside and out. It is a minor Basilica as well. The ornamental doors are magnificent.

A family friend had a mass said here for my mom (she passed away 3/16/25) at 5pm Saturday mass, 8/23/25. It was BEYOND beautiful! I grew up in Kearny and had never been to the basilica. I loved it so much that I decided to have two masses said for my mom every year around the anniversary of her death and her birthday. This brings me to why I’m doing this review. I called the office to arrange the masses and had the loveliest conversation with Darlene V. What an angel this woman is! She was so helpful, kind and listened while I talked about how much we loved the mass and how I missed my mom. She was so sincere and sweet. It solidified for me what a sacred church the basilica is! Thank you, Darlene! I hope the church knows what an angel they have in their office. 💕🙏🧘🏻‍♀️ talk to you in September. Pam

What a stunning holy ground. It was a beautiful morning bidding farewell to my friend’s mum, and also my first time at the renowned Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart. What I thought would be a heavy, mourning heart turned into a moment of awe and quiet peace. The church is the most breathtaking I have ever seen, with its towering arches, intricate stained glass, and a presence that fills you with both reverence and calm.
Sharon O — Google review
The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark is truly breathtaking — a masterpiece of architecture and a place that feels timeless. From the moment you approach its towering spires and intricate stone carvings, you realize you’re standing before one of the most stunning cathedrals in the United States. The interior is even more inspiring. The stained glass windows flood the space with colorful light, and the soaring vaulted ceilings create a sense of peace and awe. Every detail, from the marble altars to the carved wood and mosaics, reflects extraordinary craftsmanship and devotion. Whether you’re religious or simply appreciate art, architecture, and history, this cathedral is worth a visit. The atmosphere is calm and spiritual, offering a quiet retreat from the city’s noise. The organ and choir performances are also world-class — the acoustics make every note resonate beautifully. It’s hard to believe such a magnificent European-style cathedral stands right here in Newark. The Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart is not just a church — it’s an experience of beauty, serenity, and inspiration.
Youssef G — Google review
Peaceful. Try not to visit during lunch without knowing if the building is open. Amazing history and I remember when the Pope visited and the Green helicopter landed across the street on the knoll.

Just beautiful. You enter on the side street. The stained glass windows are stunning. If I didn't know, I would have thought I was in a cathedral in Europe!

Park
Nature & Parks
Branch Brook Park, a 360-acre green space designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1867, is renowned for its picturesque waterways and bridges. The park features a stocked lake, miles of winding pathways, and over 4,000 Japanese cherry trees that create a stunning floral display in spring. Located in Newark and Belleville, it is the nation's first county park and boasts the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the United States.
If you’re looking for a perfect spring day, Branch Brook Park during the Cherry Blossom Festival is the place to be! The cherry trees are absolutely stunning — just look at how gorgeous they are (sharing a few pics!). Some trees were like waterfalls of pink petals, and it honestly felt like being inside a painting. The park is massive, so even though it gets crowded during the festival, there’s plenty of space to spread out. We loved chilling by the lake near the fountain — the view with the cathedral in the background was just beautiful and super peaceful. Perfect spot to sit, relax, and people-watch. The Prudential Concert Grove area had groups flying kites, picnicking, and just enjoying the vibes. It’s a very family-friendly place, and you can tell people come prepared with blankets, snacks, and good energy. Parking can be a little tricky during peak times, but once you’re in, it’s totally worth it. The blooms, the breeze, and the smiles all around made it such a happy experience. Highly recommend visiting during peak bloom if you can — it’s pure magic!

NEWARK: Branch Brook Park is a true gem, renowned for its breathtaking springtime cherry blossoms and celebrated as the nation’s first county park open to the public. Spanning over 360 acres, its winding paths are perfect for a scenic stroll with your leashed pup. We were lucky to visit during their vibrant Diwali festival, a joyful celebration of Indian culture filled with color and community. Throughout the year, the park hosts a variety of events, so keep an eye out for seasonal happenings. Beyond the blossoms, you will find a dog park, playgrounds, sports courts, public art installations, and plenty of open space to explore. Fun fact: Branch Brook Park boasts the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in any U.S. Park and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so you are walking through history as well as beauty. For extended adventures, the 36-mile Lenape Trail connects Branch Brook to other parks across neighboring towns. With multiple entrances and parking areas, it is easy to find your way in. We recommend starting at the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center, it is a great launch point for your visit!

Visited Branch Brook Park on April 19 during Easter weekend and had such a great time. There was an egg hunt for kids and they were giving out free hot dogs which was a really nice surprise. Most of the cherry blossoms had already fallen but it was still really pretty. When the wind blew and petals floated down it felt super peaceful and beautiful. There’s a fun playground for kids and a welcome center nearby so restrooms weren’t an issue. It’s a great spot for a family day out and we’d love to visit again.

Branch Brook Park Review Branch Brook Park is a beautiful place to spend the day, whether you're walking, biking, or fishing. I visited during cherry blossom season, which was absolutely stunning. Even on a Wednesday afternoon, the park was quite crowded—especially around the paved paths—so biking there was a bit tricky. However, the park is huge, and if you have a mountain bike, there are plenty of areas to enjoy a peaceful ride away from the crowds. There’s ample parking, and despite spending a good amount of time there, we only saw a fraction of what the park has to offer. One of the highlights is that Branch Brook Park has the largest collection of cherry blossom trees in the country. It’s truly a sight to see. The park was designed by the Olmsted Brothers, the sons of Frederick Law Olmsted, the renowned landscape architect who designed Central Park. Their vision and attention to natural beauty really shine through in every corner of the park.

I don't know that I've ever posted a review or pictures from here, but it is one of my favorite places, and I go often. The bathrooms are easy to find if you use the interactive map from their website. The least busy time to go is early morning, at least before noon. The busiest time is during the Cherry Blossom blooming. That is the time of the pictures I posted. They are beautiful but I do wish more people do not know about this park. 🧠🤯FUN FACTS: Essex County Branch Brook Park has the largest and most varied collection of Japanese Flowering Cherry Blossom trees in the United States; with 5,300 in 18 varieties. 🌸 It's that time of year and I was blessed to be able to visit one of the largest displays of cherry blossoms! They also have a Webcam setup that you can watch online and see if they are still blooming or to just get a preview. Nothing beats being there in person

Restaurant
Fornos of Spain is a bustling restaurant located in Newark, offering a taste of traditional Spanish cuisine and an extensive selection of vintage Spanish wines. The elegant, old-world setting provides an authentic experience, with knowledgeable and attentive staff contributing to consistently good reviews. The seafood paella and sangria are highly recommended. Despite not being the closest to Newark Liberty Airport, it's easily accessible and popular among families, individuals, and tourists.
Have taken my work team here twice. Both times we were extremely pleased with the service and the food. Upscale dining at relatively affordable pricing. Everyone loved their various paellas (especially the black rice paella). Beef and cheese was delightful. Chicken Marsala delicious and done very well. Desserts was also top notch ... Pistachio creme brulee is a must try.

Haven’t been there in a few years. I could literally slap myself for that! What a gem I’ve been missing out on. Forno’s is top billing in our rotation. Everything was supreme including our waiter Aguilar! His suggestions throughout our dinner were spot on. He is exceptional at what he does. Thank you for that Aguilar! If you want a wonderful experience drop what you’re doing and treat yourself to an amazing place, FORNO’S. 🌟

Incredible food. The portions serving size is very generous. I loved their spanish yellow rice, the seasoning, in my opinion, is to live for. Their fried calamari is very crunchy and rich with the sauce they give. The bread also has a nice unique flavor twist to it, of course the butter is a solid accompanament. I got the lamb, it is tender (~$45), but I prefer the steak since it was more on the juicy/flavorful side. Overall, excellent choice for a fancy dinner together with friends and family. I loved the soothing and relaxing atmosphere. They also do free delicious surprise dessert for birthday celebrations.

So, we've been going to Don Peppe's for many years. I've been growing less and less enthusiastic about the food for some time now. Because the food is always good, never great. Something is always missing in the flavor. Before Don Peppe, Iberia was a favorite of ours. The last few years, we went with another couple that are our dear friends. They are big tippers and when we went with them the 1st time, it was like we were celebreties. I was surprised and clueless to the fact that tipping big, resulted in VERY special service. No waiting for a table, free appetizers, bread, salads, drinks were immediatly brought to our table. We were welcomed like royalty. Whew! However, I am not sorry to say that after 50 years in business it is now permanently closed down. The pandemic killed the business and the food and service was sub-par the last time we went to dinner at Iberia. Back to dinner last night! Due to unfortunate news of my wife's sisters passing, she went home to be with her family in the DR. We live in Allentown, PA. SInce skipping lunch I was hungry at dinner. My wife had ni interest in food, and wanted to be dropped off at EWR, I finally was compelled to find a better place on Ferry St. While at home yesterday I delved into reviews from various restaurants, including Don Pepe. What I discovered was a ton of reviews that shared my feeling about Don Pape, identical feelings to mine. When looking at Forno of Spain reviews, they were almost all 5 star, and 4 star reviews. After dropping off my wife, I set my GPS to direct me there. I was welcomed and greeted immediatly. I no sooner sat down and bread/delicious imported olives/olive oil was delivered to my table. Hadn't even seen the menu yet. The service and ambiance was like 1st class. Attention to detail from the wait staff (there are many) catered to the table like I was a special guest. Note: Don Pepe drops olive oil and bread after being seated. No olives, no salad. You can pay extra for a salad if you like. You pay a little more at Forno's, but you get more. The salad at Forno's was excellent - with a mix of greens, walnuts, and other veggies with a not to heavy blend of olive oil/balsamic . The bread is toasted and lightly seasoned - but I do prefer Don Pepe's Portugese bread. I'm glad I didn't order an appetizer - when it's just me eating - it is overkill. No dessert as well, I was full. For my main entree it was Paella. What makes Forno's Paella so much better? The quality and freshness of the seafood in the dish. The clams, mussels, and shrimp, were great. The lobster, scallops (especially), and calamari were far more tender than what I've tasted from Don Pepe. The lobster was also tender, not tough, and you get the claw too (unlike Don Pepe). The rice and sauce in the dish completed the perfect meal. Now I know what better tastes like. As you can see in the pics, fried potatoes are included with the meal - but are not included at Don Pepe. The portion size at Forno's is a little smaller I think, but your going to take home leftovers for sure! Paella costs $48 at Forno's, I was happy to pay it! Parking is valet and free. My only issue was when I passed in front of my main server on the way out. I'm a 20% tipper and he was vivibly upset and the look on his face showed it as he ignored me upon me leaving. They offer a version of Paella over capellini, which I've never seen before. The lamb specials (2), looked amazing! I'll be going back to try them!

Excellent experience, food and drink. Take note that when people say they are very generous with portion size, it’s very true. We don’t regret ordering a ceviche (octopus, fish, shrimp) but after having salads (fresh and great vinaigrette), bread and olives we almost didn’t need our paella primavera (spring). Took at least half of it home. So many waiters/waitresses so service was fast and attentive. Will come again, and so should you!

The best place ⭐️ The salad and the churros for default are delicious We went to the restaurant to celebrate my husband’s birthday they charged me a fee for bringing cake but it was worth paying for it because I liked the service too much. We will definitely return, the sangria is delicious The chicken is delicious too. Also We got a large portion for each dish however the paella 🥘 was not my favorite.

I first dined in this lovely Spanish and Portuguese restaurant last year on the thirteenth of July. This was one of my favorite moments of dining in any ethnic and healthy restaurant in my lifetime. I admired the large parking lot and how there would be someone to park a customer's car while having possession of the keys until that person leaves. Lastly, I enjoyed the flamenco music and even my meal was wonderfully prepared. I ate the rabbit stew with many vegetables.

I was truly impressed with the generous serving sizes. Along with my meal, I received a fresh salad and a few extra treats at no extra cost, which made the experience even more delightful. The espresso was served steaming hot and tasted fantastic. A perfect lunch experience overall!

It had been a while since I made it to Mompou. I was starving after our flight back home and decided to stop for some tapas. As always, Mompou did not disappoint! Our bartender was amazing and every tapas dish was excellent! We splurged and ordered the chocolate trio dessert! AMAZING!!!

Came here with some friends and tried many different dishes from the tapas menu. Most of them were very good and we enjoyed the experience. I liked trying things that I normally wouldn't have ordered by myself. The staff was very attentive. Pictured below is the baked potatoes, hangar steak, fried calamari, empanadas, and avocado crab salad.

Mompu nails the vibe with a sleek, modern dining room, chill back patio, and genuinely friendly staff. The sangria was spot-on, but the papas bravas stole the show—crispy, perfectly seasoned, and utterly delicious. The chicken skewers and house bread with spicy tomato sauce were solid picks. The mussels were just OK, and the tres leches dessert, while clever with its pound-cake base, could’ve used more moisture.

We walked in on a Tue eve and enjoyed a very good tapas dinner. It’s a good menu with traditional choices and well presented. My daughter has brought small business groups to the restaurant and it’s great for small parties as well and regular diners.

While working in the area a co-worker suggested we try this tapas joint. Went in on a weeknight and they were pretty busy, so be sure to make reservations. Service was really good during our entire stay. The menu is loaded with some really nice, appetizing Spanish dishes. But what impressed me most was that the food was very nicely prepared! After going to another local “Spanish” joint nearby I was very unimpressed with the way they prepared their food and felt that most all places with that outdated exterior and interior were going to be this way… It was refreshing to find this place that has a very updated and beautifully decorated interior and food to match. Bottom line – Definitely worth visiting, but make reservations! Oh, and get the paella!

What a gem! Great pulpo and croquetas de bacalao, really missed these. The bacalao al pil pil was really good too, and the portion was huge. Nice staff and great service, though the best thing was the people we met who recommended us all the good places to eat/shop in the neighborhood.

It’s a good spot everyone was very friendly and the food was good. They also give an inordinate amount of food. I mean I don’t think I single person at our table finished their food. The ambience is nice and overall I like it.

This place sets the standard for amazing food and warm hospitality. Everything feels genuinely authentic, from the flavors to the way guests are treated. The staff go above and beyond to make sure you’re completely taken care of, and the owner is such a kind and welcoming person who makes everyone feel at home. Once you eat here, it’s hard to find anywhere else that measures up!

12/5 recommend this place! Incredibly polite and attentive staff, refilling drinks for you, wrapping your left overs for you, and making sure the food is perfect. Great seafood selection. Delicious homemade bread. Variety of alcoholic beverages to choose from (I enjoyed some Sangria). Best dinner experience in our trip to New York. Will be coming back again when in the area!

Absolutely my favorite Spanish Restaurant in Ironbound Newark. I always leave here satisfied.

It’s refreshing to see a historical heritage Spanish restaurant, accommodating to all cultures coming to experience Spanish cuisine. It was wonderful to see Latin American staff that were impeccably trained. The food did not disappoint being of Spanish heritage. It was sad to see a negative review a while back, saying that the ambience and the food and service was not good. Quite contrary I personally think that that person may have not wanted to see a diverse community of different nationalities, enjoying the restaurant

This is my go to when in North Jersey. I'm from Philly, but have been coming here for 20 plus years. Was introduced by a customer of mine and always did lunch or dinner here with clients. The food is amazing - was here Saturday to take y daughter for birthday dinner. The weekends they have amazing specials - i had the suckling pig - it was absolutely delish and the sauce amazing. She had the stuffed salmon and it didnt disappoint. Pitcher of white sangria was perfect. Impeccable service as well. Thanks again for a wonderful meal.

This place is a hidden gem! The service is the best I have ever experienced. This is real food cooked to order made with love. Don't panic when entering lol your view is of the bar. Once you go thru the magical door your jaw will drop from amazement at the cozy and beautiful dinning room. Dessert options are delish. There is something for everyone. Parking is on the side street. There is a lot and then you walk to the corner to enter the restaurant. You can smell the food from a block away.

Portuguese restaurant
Adega Grill is a charming restaurant located in Ironbound, featuring grapevine murals, stone fireplaces, and archways. The interior is adorned with wrought iron gates and earthy yellow walls. Specializing in Portuguese and Spanish cuisine, the restaurant offers a diverse menu of fresh fish, seafood, and organic meats. The retro-inspired lounge area provides a cool atmosphere for enjoying drinks and conversation.
Adega Grill Is FANTASTIC. Beatifully decorated, old school impeccable service, our server was AMAZING. And the food was so fresh and so good. I felt like I was in Portugal. We went for Father’s Day, last minute, an hour before kitchen closed and the experience, the food, the passion fruit sangria and our adorable, Portuguese server, made our night. Will be back very soon.

Attended a function and we liked the fact ADEGA had a private parking within walking distance to restaurant. We noticed they had sidewalk dining facing Ferry Street. A nice feature but, too busy for it to be romantic with traffic congestion and pedestrians crowding the street. No patrons took advantage of this offering. The restaurant has a few floors with rooftop, and party rooms on the 2nd floor. Nice decor with a full service bar. The banquet room was painted black which was strange for a joyous party. Service was slow and strange. Appetizers can at different times and one appetizer completely was missed and later showed up as an after thought. The appetizers were average. As for beverages. They place one bottle of wine, pitcher of sangria and soda for a table of 10. We had to request a bottle after emptying one bottle. Entrees were mediocre and steak was over cooked. Service was spotty. The bartender was the best part of the entire event.

This place was great. The food was delicious, even though the presentation could’ve been better. The service was phenomenal and there was a great vibe.

Very fancy restaurant. There is dress code required. The restaurant is much bigger than it seems on the outside. The food was very good. Fresh vegetables and the meat is cooked to perfection. Portions are reasonably sized and the servers are very professional.

I have been to this restaurant many years earlier and it was always great. I was stuck in Newark because my flight was canceled, so I decided to see if it was still good. Wow! The service was excellent as always. My filet Mignon wrapped in bacon was amazing! The mushrooms delicious. What a great experience. The manager came by and checked on the experience. Definitely recommend!

We had our 40th Reunion for high school i.e. Saint Benedict's Preparatory School in Newark, New Jersey. Adega Grill was selected by the alumni advisory and event planning board. Adega Grill is a good local and non-chain restaurant located in the extremely busy Iron Bound section of Newark. Adega Grill is an upscale, casual and cozy authentic Portuguese and Spanish Restaurant with great food and drinks. They have a menu that boast fresh meats and seafood dishes with something for everyone. You can have a delicious and fresh meal coupled with warm, friendly, and very attentive customer service. The establishment is a really popular place with the locals and it is definitely a "Refreshing Change from the Chains!" It can get very busy in there so arrive early and you won't be disappointed. Upon entering, I was immediately greeted by two hosts whom directed me upstairs where the private affair was occurring. Both of the event hosts were very friendly, pleasant, professional, and had a genuine smile. It was a Friday around 06:00 PM and I was immediately offered White or Red Sangria which was included with our dinner buffet. There was an open cash bar were you could order whatever you desired. The tables and seating was comfortable and very organized. The facility has a fireplace, unique restroom accommodations, and a unique rooftop setting. All of the team members at Adega Grill smiled and were very welcoming. Everything was absolutely delicious, kept hot, and the various buffet items were prepared and cooked to perfection. All of the meat and others items were very tasty and not salty as many Portuguese operated business products can be. For dessert, we had our choice of flan or cheesecake and I selected cheesecake with coffee. All of the servers very attentive, friendly, efficient, and happy to help! In short, the great food and awesome customer service made for an awesome group dinning experience! I will definitely be returning to bring my wife for dinner when we are in the Newark, New Jersey area to try some of their other appetizers, entrees, specials, and dessert.

I was in town and was told Ferry Street had the best selection of food in the Ironbound area of Newark. My friends and I chose outdoor seating. I had the Parmesan chicken. It was delicious. My companions had stuffed lobster, and steak. The sangria’s are a must. Jose was our server. He was patient and very attentive. Please stop in if you’re in Newark.

Loved the experience from beginning to end. Was doing research for a work holiday party so this is definitely a contender. We had flaming sausage, arugala salad, halibut with vegetables and potatoes and lamb chops with vegetables and potatoes. All were excellent, prepared as directed, and flavors were fabullous! For dessert, we had pumpkin cheesecake and a bomba. We loved our server (who can sing btw). Overall, a great dining experience. It's wonderful for large parties. The atmosphere is very inviting. The location is in the prime of Ferry Street. Couldn't find the parking lot but we were lucky to find a street parking spot. Woudl come back again!

Spanish restaurant
Nestled in the heart of Newark, the Spanish Tavern is a charming family-run eatery that captures the essence of traditional Spanish cuisine. Renowned for its authentic paella and an array of fresh seafood dishes, this restaurant has become a beloved staple in the local Portuguese community. The inviting atmosphere resembles a cozy dining room filled with nostalgic decor reminiscent of a grandmother's home, complete with antique furnishings and thick cloth napkins that add to its warmth.
First off, the staff is amazing!!! Every time I go..amazing! I've been going here for years but this is the first time I dined in because I was with a friend. I love the food especially the patatas, my go to. Drinks amazing, and I love that there are options for the plant based community. Dining in is way better than taking out, which is what I'm used to doing. I highly recommend if you're in this area.

We ordered the calamari, octopus and clams casino for apps. All were very good. Calamari crispy and that marinara sauce had a little kick which made it better. octopus was tender and not rubbery. The clams were satisfactory. My daughter ordered chicken and rice and me and my wife order paella Valencia for 2. Entrees were good. My only disappointment was they pushed the "still" water on me which cost $10. All patrons beware as it's a up sell tactic. I hated it cause I was targeted and no other table got screwed.

The food here is incredible, especially the patatas — my absolute favorite! The drinks are fantastic, and I really appreciate that they have great choices for those who prefer plant-based options. Eating in made the whole experience even better than takeout. I’d definitely recommend this spot to anyone nearby!

I'm starting this off with what I didn't like. They put a $6 fee on our bill for credit card. I get it. They get this ridiculous fee from them, they pass it on to you. The establishment has to wait to get their money. But to charge for debit card is wrong. They had the money in their account before I got home. On top of that they put the fee and tax in suggested tip amount. Now onto Spanish Tavern. The place is beautiful. Old school charm. The staff is terrific, also with a bit of old school charm. Our waiter Jose was great. They start you off with soup served up at the table. We started with garlic shrimp and paprika. Just fabulous. (Bread was stale and other tables had same issue) I got a seafood paella with shrimp, mussels, clams, scallops and lobster in a fantastic tasty rice. Lydia got the lobster dinner and was not disappointed, though she would have like a bigger lobster as they only have 1.25 lb size. We finished with flan which was very good. I also need to mention the pitcher of white sangria which was delicious, well made and among the tastiest we can remember.

We came on my birthday for an early dinner. The designated parking lot is perfect, I actually watched the parking antics out the window as we ate 🤣 when you walk in you are in the bar. It seems a gallery of sorts with modern art on the walls small but cozy bar area, enough space for someone to enjoy a meal there. We were seated immediately in the dining room, very pretty atmosphere classic old world art reminiscent of my European grandparents’ dining room art ❤️. I chose this restaurant based on the reviews of the paella, we ordered the paella for two and enjoyed the escarole soup while we waited. The paella was amazing the seafood really does come out perfectly cooked. The meat; chicken and sausage were really good but the amount of meats compared to the seafood seemed less (maybe because it had been said I like seafood more, which there was plenty for both of us). There was plenty to eat and still enough fit each of us to have a full meal the next night. The fresh made potato chips are amazing we wound up taking them home too. The only reason I gave less stars for service was because I had to ask for lemon for my water so many times, there were plenty of servers to attend to all your needs, the service was fine after that was resolved. We both enjoyed the whole experience and plan to return. Thank you for the great birthday dinner.

We went last night for my mother in laws birthday and it was amazing. We got there at 5:30 on a Saturday. It was all amazing, food was delicious, hot, and simply perfect. We were a party of 9 and the service was 100% on point with all our needs and waiters were very nice and friendly. Also made sure we were good and our drink were filled to the top. I have been here before and it never disappoints, food and service is consistent. I recommend Spanish Tavern to all for all occasion or just because. Thank you Spanish Tavern for a amazing night, see you soon!!! P.s. cappuccino's were so good too!!🥰😍
