Caverns & Caves
Skyline Caverns, located in Front Royal, VA, is a natural wonder boasting rare rock formations and anthodites that are 60 million years old. Discovered in 1937 by Walter S. Amos, the caverns offer guided one-hour tours daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. Visitors can explore the 1 and 1/8th mile-long underground trail with a knowledgeable guide and marvel at the white spiky rock formations known as anthodites.
AMAZING experience! Tour guy was awesome. Loved his dad jokes, overall personality and how kind he came off. Great guy to educate people. Very patient. Gift shop has a lot of cool things. Recommend checking everything out first before choosing or you’ll end up with your arms full with stuff. They are priced very well. 10/10 recommend and I will probably return even though I live in Illinois.

Beautiful experience! Andrew is one of the best tour guides that I've ever had. Be aware that the caverns are around 52 degrees and proper shoes will make you experience less stressful.

Visiting the Skyline Caves was a wonderful travel experience. The unique stalactites created a beautiful picture under the wonderful color combination. The tour guide explained in detail. Unfortunately, my English is not good and my understanding is limited. I bought a refrigerator magnet in the gift shop as a permanent souvenir. I will recommend it to my friends who come to visit.

Review: Skyline Caverns We recently visited Skyline Caverns with our 15-month-old son, after reading several Google reviews that it could be a good outing for families with kids and strollers. Here’s how our experience stacked up. What we liked Guided tour format**: The tour guide-led approach adds structure and storytelling to the cavern exploration, which is nice for older kids and curious adults. Cavern scenery**: The caverns themselves are impressive to see and offer a fun environment to explore and imagine. What to expect (and caveats) Cost and value**: The experience was over $50 for two adults, with our son admitted for free. Depending on your family size, this can add up, so factor in the overall value for younger children. Accessibility for little ones**: The tour involves 61 total steps and an uneven path, which can be challenging for toddlers or infants. We used a wrap to carry our son to prevent falls, but it required extra effort and attention. Timing**: While some reviews mention around an hour, our tour lasted closer to 1 hour and 30 minutes. It felt longer than anticipated for a small child, especially in a dim environment. Other families**: We observed that many of the younger kids in our group (ages roughly 6 and under) had a harder time with the length and lighting. A number of children appeared older than our son and seemed more comfortable with the pace and environment. Recommendations If you have very young children (like a 15-month-old), consider whether you’re prepared for a longer, dimly lit walk with uneven terrain and several stairs. A stroller may be impractical due to the stairs and narrow passages, so a carrier or wrap is often necessary. Plan for extra time and a slower pace if you’re traveling with toddlers. The guided nature is helpful, but it can be tiring for little ones. If possible, verify current pricing and tour duration before you go, as policies and experiences can vary by day. For families with older kids (roughly 4–12+), Skyline Caverns seems better aligned with their curiosity and stamina, given the length and stairs. Bottom line Skyline Caverns is a worthwhile cavern experience with beautiful formations and a solid guided tour. However, for families with very young children, it can be a long, uneven, and dimly lit outing that isn’t ideal for the youngest in your party. If your kids are older and mobile, you’ll likely enjoy the adventure more. For families with toddlers, weigh the costs and physical demands carefully, or consider alternative activities that are more stroller-friendly.

First time visiting a cavern. Be sure to wear a jacket or sweater—it gets very chilly inside—and comfortable shoes, as the pavement is uneven in some areas. We discovered this cavern while driving home from the Natural Bridge. My 8- and 9-year-old boys really enjoyed the tour. Some parts of the path had handrails, while others did not, so keep that in mind if you need extra support. If you’re uncomfortable in tight or enclosed spaces, this may not be the best activity for you. Our tour guide was engaging and even funny at times, which added to the experience. However, the cashier at the gift shop wasn’t very friendly, which was a bit disappointing. There are plenty of souvenirs to choose from & picnic tables outside if you want to have a snack before getting back on the road.

Most colorful and unique cavern I've been to yet. The tour is guided and takes about an hour. Our tour guide, Beckett, was great. He was very informative and allowed for us to take our time to take photos and check everything out. Special highlight - this is one of a few places in the world which hosts anthodites. This was my first time ever seeing them, and I must say, they were pretty neat! Fernando the "cavern fish" - if you will, was a great surprise too. 10/10 Recommend.

Excellent. Well worth a visit. We went after doing the Skyline Drive. Our guide Courtney was excellent. Very knowledgeable and engaging, we learned lots. Fascinating. Large gift shop. Easy parking, suitable for RVs. The tour is an hour, no need to book just turn up and book in. My sons, 12 and 14 and I really enjoyed.

We had a great time, they give you tons of information about the origins of the cavern. It was very cool inside, about 54F. Andrew (our tour guide) was great and he was funny too😁.

Visitors can explore various exhibits showcasing items such as dolls, toys, children's clothing, and authentic Civil War memorabilia. Took my students on a brief field trip to this museum and we all enjoyed it. Lots of local Civil War history with an abundance of artifacts on display like old uniforms, war torn flags, and lots of rifles! The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The museum is all on one level and they have a small gift shop with books, flags, stickers, etc. Photography is not allowed in the museum itself. Free, on-street parking available and the museum is in close proximity to several other interesting destinations like the Warren Heritage Society and the Virginia Beer Museum.

This place is great!!! We really enjoyed checking out all of the CS displays. The staff was absolutely terrific too, very knowledgeable and friendly. We will defiantly bring the family back here next time we go to Front Royal.

This place is cool, they have a lot of authentic items and a knowledgeable staff. The fee is $5.00 which is less than you can spend on a cup of coffee so for me it was well worth it. I wouldn't plan a special trip to come here but if your in the area hiking or doing outdoor stuff I would definitely check this out.

Amazing collection of history and real artifacts, including uniforms, weapons, flags, letters, stamps, and even children's toys found from the civil war era and beyond.

The gentleman that works here is very knowledgeable and helpful. I told him about my ancestors being mosbys rangers and he got his personal book and showed me my ancestors names. He made a copy for me to take home. What a nice guy and this place has amazing books relics even Belle Boyd's dress! I encourage everyone to go especially if u are a Stonewall Jackson, Mosby, and Lee fan. Sorry I didnt catch this gentleman's name. Great time!

An excellent historical Center for learning, from an entire overview of the Civil War, to the personal images, words and effects of those who served. Many from the Front Royal area itself. Very knowledgeable and friendly staff who made my visit even better.

The Beer Museum in Front Royal, VA offers a distinct and exceptional experience. It boasts an extensive selection of craft beers from various parts of the state, while also showcasing the history of these beverages from their prohibition era to their eventual legalization and rise in popularity. Although they do not serve food, patrons have the option to order delivery from local establishments or bring their own meals from the nearby restaurants on Main Street. Additionally, visitors can enjoy live performances by local musicians in the outdoor area.
I stayed an extra night in front Royal and it has been well worth the wait. This is just a great little town and it has what is almost a beer district right here on Chester St. with several breweries or beer outlets from which to choose. The Virginia beer museum really caught my attention and the young lady getting ready to open for business was so inviting so cordial so knowledgeable and so much fun I just couldn’t resist. I’ll post a picture of their array of beers but the one that really got my attention was George Washington’s original brew which I have to say has an air of colonial nostalgia and history about it. I’m gonna tour the inside rooms again and take a few more pictures but for anyone visiting front Royal Virginia this is must say frontage property.

It's small. It's interesting to see all of the old beers. They sell IPA's downstairs. I'm not an IPA fan i went to the bar next door that had a good selection of beer & hard ciders. Great atmosphere & met some nice friendly people.

We visited here for the Burns Supper and we had a wonderful time! The customer service was wonderful and the atmosphere was welcoming. The walls have history on them and its fire pit out back was proven to be great for singing! Thanks yall!

This little free museum provides some overview of the history of beer in the United States and in Virginia. See Washington’s beer recipe and his standing order that beer should be part of the soldier’s daily ration. See information on jefferson and his use of beer while writing parts of the Constitution. The museum also has a tasting room where you can try different types of beer. You can purchase your beer here and just hang out in this incredibly relaxed atmosphere. Highly recommend!

A very unique and special experience while in Front Royal. The Beer Museum not only offers s big variety of crest brews from all over the state of VA, but it also showcases the beverages' history from prohibition to it's legalization and popularity. They don't serve food but you can order delivery from a few local places or even bring your own from the many restaurants just steps away on the Main St. Outdoor area often also features local music.

Cafe
Main Street Daily Grind CAFÉ is a charming and laid-back spot located on Main Street in historic Downtown Front Royal. The café offers a warm atmosphere, serving an array of coffee and espresso drinks, as well as delicious breakfast and lunch options. Visitors can enjoy the delightful seasonal coffees, such as the maple latte for fall. The café also prides itself on its extensive menu options, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices.
The breakfast sandwich was excellent—served hot, juicy, and well-balanced, with the ham and tomato pairing beautifully. The tortilla wrap was crispy and satisfying. The cappuccino was solid and warming, exactly what you’d hope for in a classic café setting. The tomato soup was a little underwhelming—slightly bitter and lacking the freshness you’d expect. We also had a scoop of Moose Tracks ice cream: a tart-sweet flavor that’s pleasant but a bit too icy in texture. The space itself is spacious but quite dim, which makes it feel a little dated or heavy, though some might find it cozy.

First visit after placing an order to pick up before we made an impromptu drive up Skyline Drive. The fact that you can do online order was very convenient. Food was decent and came out by promised time. This is your typical, locally owned small town spot that is well liked by patrons. Interior was clean and spacious.

A great little spot. We were traveling home from Shenandoah and love Front Royal. A cute little town. We needed some coffee and did not want a chain store. Found you all just driving by! Delicious latte! A lot of flavors to choice from. Also added a Blueberry hand pie. Get one, warm it up! Yum!!!

FrontRoyal, VA. A lovely little mountain town located near the northern tip of Skyline Drive. It boasts a cute main street, shops, and friendly people. Main Street Daily Grind Cafe is one of a handful of coffee shops nestled into the historic district. The shop is well laid out with plenty of seats and elbow room. The coffee was good. Quickly served up by friendly staff. They had pastry items on display that looked delicious, but we didn't try any. I can see enjoying a cup with friends at this cafe. #OwlsTweet #BirdLife #worldtraveler #traveler #MeetMrOwl

Daily Grind Coffee in Front Royal is the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of exploring. Their iced lattes are smooth and bold, easily one of the best in the area. It’s a laid-back place with friendly staff and reliably good coffee and food.

We had the chicken salad sandwich and the grilled chicken sandwich, both were hearty and delicious! Would definitely come back.

First visit: cute little place. Was disappointed by the quality of this particular meal however. Both of us had the chicken salad sandwich, one on wheatberry toast and the other on croissant and both agreed it was very bland. Also ordered waffle fries and they were a little more on the soft side, as opposed to crispy. Honey mustard was standard and yummy! Cashier was friendly. Would give them another try. Just a little underwhelmed with this particular visit.
Mattie M — Google review
Staff was polite and attentive. Sandwiches are made to order, but came out quickly. I recommend the lox and bagel — the lemon chicken orzo was pretty good also! Coffee was very good. I like the fact that they had real half and half in a pitcher — no little couplets that you had to open.

American restaurant
Element Restaurant in Front Royal, Virginia, offers a stylish and contemporary setting where you can enjoy New American cuisine and a full bar. The restaurant is perfect for semi-private celebrations or events, with the added option of outdoor seating. Whether it's a birthday, anniversary, or just a fun night out with friends, Element Restaurant can help plan an evening that will make everyone feel special. The gourmet cuisine and fine dining experience at Element create an atmosphere to match.
Element is one of our favorite restaurants. We live 40 minutes away, and make the drive without question. The menu is limited, but there is plenty to accommodate any taste palate. Our server Katherine is amazing every time. She remembers us and I never have to remind her that I'm gluten free. She is always very cheerful, pleasant and helpful, and I see her that way with all of the other tables as well. I love the dim lighting. It makes the atmosphere cozy and romantic. We travel a lot, and my husband always orders steak... and every time he says, "It's good, but it's not Element good." This place is outstanding and you don't want to miss it!

Food looks better than they taste. Food is either super salty or bland. 20% gratuity added too??? Service was okay but one bar tender serving restaurant and out 7 top so it was at times slow. I will say that the nachos was not terrible. It was okay but came out cold. They also sat us with 2 kids on high tops while 2 other tables were available...

Dim lighting at lunchtime..? The restaurant didn’t look open. Can imagine in the evening it may look atmospheric but misses it during the day. Food terrible although at first I thought it was tasty, I did at times get a strange taste coming through. (Vegetarian avocado wrap). I looked more closely and much of the avocado was bad. At home I would have thrown it away. Very poor. Waitress could see we had left a lot. My husband did not like his salmon salad… so left much of his. After asking if we wanted a box and us declining the offer, it should have been a sign at our displeasure of the meal. Very sub standard food and atmosphere poor.

Fantastic night out if you are looking for dinner Front Royal. We got the fried calamari, mussels, and dosa. The fried calamari were super crispy and tasty with a nice portion. You are in for a treat if you like calamari. The mussels were fresh and well seasoned. Only downside is we would like the mussels to get more properly cleaned. The dosa were alright with substantial fall seasonal flavors. Our waitress was courteous and we will come back again.

Worst dining experience ever. We arrive at our 7:30 reservation (hostess very nice) sat us. We were not greeted by wait staff for 10 min. After finally getting a drink order in, many minutes later it arrived and we were told the kitchen was closing early at 8 pm…in 4 minutes, she says “no rush to order though.” No time for an appetizer, we of course order dinner immediately. We finish drinks, she swipes the glasses, no offer for another. Food arrives, it was good, pork tenderloin and pepper steak, we eat and end up with a small amount left over. After being ignored the entire meal she reaches for my plate to throw my food away. I asked for a box. She rolls her eyes, leaves my plate at the table and comes back 5 minutes later with a box and delivers the bill. We hadn’t asked for it yet. Did we want anything else, drink, desert, anything…it didn’t matter! For the record we had wanted desert and probably a second round of drinks. I have never had such rude service nor been pushed through a meal in that way. The evening was thoroughly stomped out. We will never go back. After looking into the reviews, I see that this is a common occurrence!

**Update 2/23... Still great food and the bar staff is amazing! 💗 I've ordered take out several times and never have been disappointed. This is the 1st time I've actually eaten in this location. Took my husband for his birthday. Lots of wonderful choices, but we really wanted to try their wood fired pizzas. They are wonderful, as was their selection of draft, bottled beers, wines and cocktails. The hostess was sweet and the wait staff patient and very professional. The interior is peaceful. Definitely want to visit inside again. Thanks for making his Birthday so nice! **update as of 9/22 - still wonderful food, staff and drnks!**

We have been here a few times now and we have always left very satisfied with the delicious food. The menu changes so there are new great things to try. The chocolate mouse pavlova is delicious.

Japanese restaurant
Nestled in the charming town of Front Royal, YamaFuji Japanese Restaurant offers a delightful escape into the world of authentic Japanese cuisine. This easygoing eatery serves up an array of traditional favorites, from inventive sushi rolls to hearty cooked dishes that warm the soul. Diners can indulge in comforting bowls of miso soup and udon noodles, making it a perfect spot for both dine-in experiences and convenient takeout options.
I really like this place. They aren't perfect, but I've not seen any restaurant try harder than Yamafuji. The owner puts a lot of effort into the sushi and has a chef that really knows what he's doing. I've experienced servers here in the past that were just terrible, but them management seems to have a good crew working now. Zayniyah is really the best and strives to ensure the customers are having a great experience.

I have eaten here for many years and have never had less than an amazing meal! The service is friendly and quick. The restaurant is clean as are the bathrooms. Their sushi is top notch!

Amazing tempura, huge portions for lunch, delicious free salad appetizer. Authentic food and flavor, even K-pop sounds. 🎉
Anna B — Google review
It was not great at all. You walk in and instantly got the smell of fish... Then, we sat down and could smell what smelt like rotten veggies. The atmosphere had potential, but even the sushi seemed to lack effort. It's like the chefs gave up on quality. **Update** barely got home and the food didn't stay with me if you know what I mean... Would give it zero stars, if allowed.

When u order fried rice they give u steamed rice with sauce on top. And when u ask they try to tell you it's fried and I definitely know the difference sent it back and they still charge u for it. Couldn't get refills on drinks and no one else was in the restaurant

Haven't eaten from here since the pandemic. Stopped in recently for lunch. Had shushi/sashimi only. Fresh and delicious just like I remembered and they offered a free tasting during lunch hour of another roll. The young server obviously lacks experience but was trying.

YamaFuji is a bit of a mixed bag - the exterior is really run-down looking, but the inside looks quite nice. The bathrooms were quite dirty - it felt like nobody cleaned them (there was no soap, for starters). Our server quoted the current day's deals incorrectly but he was really friendly and accommodated us well. The food came out really slowly but it was delicious! We got the salmon lover roll and some spicy salmon tempura rolls and both were delicious and a reasonable price too. Overall, not the best experience but the food was good enough that I'd consider going back.
Samuel S — Google review
The food was pretty good and the staff was nice. Some dishes were interesting (in a good way), like the tofu noodle soup with mountain vegetables. The dishes came out when ready and were very far apart and we were mostly done when my child received her meal, for example. It would be great if they had more tofu options.

Breakfast restaurant
L'Dees Pancake House is a beloved family-owned restaurant that has been serving classic American breakfast and lunch dishes, along with housemade desserts, since 1989. The diner-style eatery offers an all-day breakfast menu featuring ultimate omelets and traditional French toast. Located in downtown Front Royal, Virginia, the restaurant provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere where locals and tourists can enjoy delicious food while engaging in friendly conversations with the community.
What a treat! Great customer service, fantastic food, and fairly priced. That’s so rare these days. We happened to stop by when driving from DC to our home in TN and found this by way of searching for a breakfast stop. They seated us quickly and refilled our coffee constantly. The food was perfect. So happy we stopped here! I believe it was cash only so keep that in mind. We fed 8 people for under $100.

Good place for classic American-style breakfast. No mess, no fuss, just the good stuff. I got some chocolate pancakes with bacon, sausage, and scrambled eggs with cheese. Food was good for the price and portion. Perfectly average, and there's nothing wrong with that. Waitress was very friendly and attentive. Food came out surprisingly fast despite how busy it was. Biggest selling point is their pies: I was convinced to take home a slice of cherry and now I wish I bought a full pie 😭

Awesome place for a quick bite! I came with my son to have breakfast before heading out to Shenandoah National Park. The service was great. The waitresses were very friendly and quick to seat us and take our order. My son got some pancakes and I got an order of Sunnyside up eggs with hash browns, a toasted buttered English muffin, and some biscuits with sausage gravy. All the food came out super quick and was delicious. I really like how they turned my sons pancakes into a pig. The only minor gripe for me was the amount of sausage in the gravy. I think it should had a little bit more, but considering the very fair prices, it's not much of an issue. The coffee here was also excellent. We also got a fruit cup for dessert which was a perfect ending to our meal. The restaurant is on the smaller side, but we had no issue finding seating. It was very clean and had a very welcoming atmosphere. Pricing was very fair considering the food portions (not huge, just definitely more than fair). We definitely would've made a second visit to try the other offerings, but we didn't have time. This place is definitely recommended for anyone in the area.

The food was truly worth the wait! Come hungry because you will be leaving with a full stomach no matter what you get. Highly recommend the omelettes and pancakes

We stopped here by chance on our vacation. The food was amazing! It was so good we went back the next day… Our waitress remembered us and had our drinks ready before we ordered! She made the experience wonderful! The home made pies and desserts were delicious. If we are ever in this area again we will stop in again! Thank you so much for the great experience!

A friend and I drove from Winchester for breakfast and it was definitely worth the trip!! It was so busy when we arrived, we got the last table! I have a baby in a car seat and the staff were so thoughtful in trying to get us the best table to fit the baby. Our server was a sweet older lady. She was so friendly and attentive and something about her made you feel like you were at grandmas house! I got an omelette and I thought it was great. No big to-do just a normal omelette and I loved it. My friend got the French toast meal and it looks delicious, she said it was great! The prices were very reasonable and the place was cute! I will be back and I recommend others try it!

Great food and service. Makes sense that they win best breakfast few years in a row locally. Staff is really friendly and lived the sausage and the potatoes. Would absolutely come here again.

Thai restaurant
Restaurant
Nestled in Front Royal, Virginia, Thunwa Thai is a delightful haven for lovers of authentic Thai cuisine. As you step inside this charming eatery on Commerce Ave, you're greeted by an inviting ambiance characterized by vibrant green walls and ample natural light that creates a warm atmosphere. The wooden tables add to the rustic charm, making it clear that every dish is crafted with care and passion.
This place is fenomenal. The spring rolls are crispy yet packed with flavor the pineapple fried rice is exactly how it sounds. Packed with flavor the shrimp ads great texture. The ingredients in everything is extremely fresh. The Thai tea was to die for both tastes of tea and sweetness. The mango was fresh and sweet and paired beautifully with the mango cream on a bed of sticky rice. Inexpensive but amazing quality for the price. I would go here everyday if my wallet could afford it.

This is a great restaurant with excellent service and attitude. The serving sizes are very generous and really tasty. They have a large variety of dishes. Most of the dishes can be made vegetarian with either tofu or vegetables or a combination Highly recommended!

Was a cozy atmosphere, and the lady that took care of us was quick and precise. Food was a savory flavor profile— scratched the right itch in my brain. Was a great lunch after a busy morning. This is the second time I have come here and I will continue to come here for lunch.

Compared to other Thai restaurants, the meal price here is relatively cheaper and the portions are big. The mango sticky rice was really good, enjoyed the coconut flavored coating that was on it. Would recommend!

**Update**Update: 10/14/25 I have been back to this establishment Three times. The older male Caucasian server is RUDE,UNINTERESTED and UNKEPT. I will never return with that level of “service”! The food this last visit was soooo spicy I couldn’t eat it. I asked for mild. It was Thai hot! The server never came to check on us once. I had to get up to finally ask for the check. Then he saw that I didn’t eat the food. He didn’t ask why, or if everything was okay. Soooo, I said it was to spicy. That DUDE said, “To bad”and walked away!!!!!!! I will never ever return! First review: Fantastic flavor. Very authentic. Delicious. Definitely worth the wait. Yes a very extensive wait. The waitress appeared to be waiting tables, doing carry outs and cooking in the back. That’s not her fault. However that explains the subpar service and wait times. I hope they get her some help. The food however was WONDERFUL.

We were passing by and found this gem. If you live near this fantastic restaurant, you are lucky, as the taste is so authentic, you are basically traveling to Thailand the moment you enter this place!

Surprisingly good, the taste of the Thai dishes is authentic more than many restaurants we tried in DMV. Very cheap with generous portions. Would recommend 👌 👍

A group of four, we had the Kanoom Jeeb and Spring Rolls for appetizers, and the Duck Curry, Spicy Seafood, and Pad See Eew to share. Perfect amount of food for us. Best part is that everything tastes wonderful. Really well prepared. Very tender, almost melt in your mouth noodles, perfectly flavored meals, and wonderful curry.

Staff was polite and attentive. Sandwiches are made to order, but came out quickly. I recommend the lox and bagel — the lemon chicken orzo was pretty good also! Coffee was very good. I like the fact that they had real half and half in a pitcher — no little couplets that you had to open.
