Spelunkers is a fast-food stop known for its frozen custard and burgers, making it a popular choice for those looking for a quick and satisfying meal. Located in Front Royal, this gateway town offers historic charm and one of the best cheeseburgers in the state. For a farm-to-table experience, visitors can head to Staunton where The Shack serves inventive and hearty meals sourced from local farms.
I got the cavern burger with fries and a chocolate milk shake. It was all delicious and you can tell the ingredient to include the meat are fresh and I love that they toast their buns. The milkshake was thick and smooth and so yummy! The customer service was great, friendly and kind! We were seen right away even though it was lunch rush and got our food within 10 mins of ordering. Would definitely recommend this cozy fast food diner!

Good food and good service. The steak sub was really good. The onion rings were the best I’ve ever had! The custard was a diabetic’s nightmare but was very tasty! Nathan one of the managers was very nice and accommodating! Tray one of the employees was really chill and very pleasure to talk to. We will visit again for the burgers and stop and see the Beer museum.

Great burger spot with great burgers, fries and chicken sandwiches. 10/10 for flavor, quality, speed, and price. Really feels like a old burger spot from back in the day with the prices to match. Definitely worth stopping by. Gets really packed at times but they have an additional parking lot on the back end.

I had a review left from Memorial Weekend. I haven't had time, but I'll look for it. *Spelunker's*** 116 South St, Front Royal, VA 22630 Date: May 25, 2025 Time: 1:30 pm This review reflects a personal experience as a consumer and chef. **Overall Impression:** I was coming off a nice weekend, filled with lots of things to do. And all of a sudden, we decided to stop in Front Royal to try this place that had been recommended to me a long time ago. **Highlights:** **service and speed 10/10 ** steak and cheese 10/10 (I ordered it with jalapenos) **fresh fries 10/10 (I highly recommend them) **cheeseburger 10/10 **Atmosphere & Service:** I went on a Sunday and of course they were too crowded. You can sit in the lounge area inside or there's a nice terrace outside, but everything was packed. **Final Thoughts:** If you're passing through the area, it's definitely worth a stop, a chance, and a try.

Cheesesteak, cavern burger and mild chicken sammiches with fries and onion rings.... all bangers! Fries were just right and plentiful!... Custards are rich and flavorful! Strawberry Sunday was out of this world... and the staff was on point! All pleasant and motivated! Wonderful experience!

We went with my wife to try the burgers since we’ve heard their are great. And yes they are ! One of the best burgers I’ve ever had. The food took a while but totally worth the wait

Great spot for a fast burger. Nice size burger Handcut fries Very busy and loud Order at the counter and they bring your food to the table. Indoor/outdoor seating Very loud inside

Really nice fresh burgers and fries. Parking lot was so crowded but they had a really efficient ordering system for the drive through. Staff were super polite and did a great job handling the crowds. The custard was really good too. Highly recommend this for a bite to eat before heading to Shenandoah.

Element Restaurant in Front Royal, Virginia, offers a stylish and contemporary setting where you can enjoy New American cuisine and a full bar. The restaurant is perfect for semi-private celebrations or events, with the added option of outdoor seating. Whether it's a birthday, anniversary, or just a fun night out with friends, Element Restaurant can help plan an evening that will make everyone feel special. The gourmet cuisine and fine dining experience at Element create an atmosphere to match.
Element is one of our favorite restaurants. We live 40 minutes away, and make the drive without question. The menu is limited, but there is plenty to accommodate any taste palate. Our server Katherine is amazing every time. She remembers us and I never have to remind her that I'm gluten free. She is always very cheerful, pleasant and helpful, and I see her that way with all of the other tables as well. I love the dim lighting. It makes the atmosphere cozy and romantic. We travel a lot, and my husband always orders steak... and every time he says, "It's good, but it's not Element good." This place is outstanding and you don't want to miss it!

Food looks better than they taste. Food is either super salty or bland. 20% gratuity added too??? Service was okay but one bar tender serving restaurant and out 7 top so it was at times slow. I will say that the nachos was not terrible. It was okay but came out cold. They also sat us with 2 kids on high tops while 2 other tables were available...
Wai L — Google review
Dim lighting at lunchtime..? The restaurant didn’t look open. Can imagine in the evening it may look atmospheric but misses it during the day. Food terrible although at first I thought it was tasty, I did at times get a strange taste coming through. (Vegetarian avocado wrap). I looked more closely and much of the avocado was bad. At home I would have thrown it away. Very poor. Waitress could see we had left a lot. My husband did not like his salmon salad… so left much of his. After asking if we wanted a box and us declining the offer, it should have been a sign at our displeasure of the meal. Very sub standard food and atmosphere poor.

Fantastic night out if you are looking for dinner Front Royal. We got the fried calamari, mussels, and dosa. The fried calamari were super crispy and tasty with a nice portion. You are in for a treat if you like calamari. The mussels were fresh and well seasoned. Only downside is we would like the mussels to get more properly cleaned. The dosa were alright with substantial fall seasonal flavors. Our waitress was courteous and we will come back again.

Lovely little place. Everyone was very pleased with the service and food. Very attentive and friendly waitstaff. The fish and chips was as good as any I've had, and went down especially well with a Zombie Dust. Our party of 8 also had the NY strip (excellent), the baked chicken (tasty) and the nachos (delicious). A small town treat and well be back! Highly recommended!

Worst dining experience ever. We arrive at our 7:30 reservation (hostess very nice) sat us. We were not greeted by wait staff for 10 min. After finally getting a drink order in, many minutes later it arrived and we were told the kitchen was closing early at 8 pm…in 4 minutes, she says “no rush to order though.” No time for an appetizer, we of course order dinner immediately. We finish drinks, she swipes the glasses, no offer for another. Food arrives, it was good, pork tenderloin and pepper steak, we eat and end up with a small amount left over. After being ignored the entire meal she reaches for my plate to throw my food away. I asked for a box. She rolls her eyes, leaves my plate at the table and comes back 5 minutes later with a box and delivers the bill. We hadn’t asked for it yet. Did we want anything else, drink, desert, anything…it didn’t matter! For the record we had wanted desert and probably a second round of drinks. I have never had such rude service nor been pushed through a meal in that way. The evening was thoroughly stomped out. We will never go back. After looking into the reviews, I see that this is a common occurrence!

**Update 2/23... Still great food and the bar staff is amazing! 💗 I've ordered take out several times and never have been disappointed. This is the 1st time I've actually eaten in this location. Took my husband for his birthday. Lots of wonderful choices, but we really wanted to try their wood fired pizzas. They are wonderful, as was their selection of draft, bottled beers, wines and cocktails. The hostess was sweet and the wait staff patient and very professional. The interior is peaceful. Definitely want to visit inside again. Thanks for making his Birthday so nice! **update as of 9/22 - still wonderful food, staff and drnks!**

We have been here a few times now and we have always left very satisfied with the delicious food. The menu changes so there are new great things to try. This time I had the Bulgogi pork and it was absolutely wonderful. My husband had the beef tenders and he said it was amazing. The last thing I will say is save room for dessert! The chocolate mouse pavlova is delicious.

Restaurant
Main Street Mill Restaurant is a charming eatery located in historic downtown Front Royal, VA. Housed in an old mill with century-old chestnut beams and murals by a local artist, the restaurant offers a cozy atmosphere for enjoying American cuisine. Family-owned since 1989, it serves breakfast all day alongside a variety of lunch and dinner options including salads, burgers, pastas, and steaks. The friendly staff provides attentive service while patrons can choose to dine indoors or outdoors.
If you want to treat yourself to a great meal in a cozy and welcoming historic environment in the heart of town, don’t miss the Main St Mill restaurant. It was the casual recommendation of a friend that caused me to pop by for lunch today, and I could not have been more pleased with the entire experience. “Down home style“ homemade meatloaf with real mashed potatoes and green beans along with a hearty dark gravy, with the most delightful white and fluffy rolls, I’ve eaten in a very long time put a smile on my face that did not leave me for an hour afterwards. But don’t take my word for it; pop by and give him a try. Tell them “Carl” sent you.

Had a wonderful dinner here with some friends after attending a nearby fall event at Cedar Creek. I ordered the meatloaf mashed potatoes and collard greens. All of which were delicious. I actually asked the waitress as to whether she preferred the country fried steak or the meatloaf. And although she said she had not tried either because of the gluten restriction in her diet, she did say that the meatloaf was very popular here I actually asked the waitress as to whether she preferred the country fried steak or the meatloaf. And although she said she had not tried either because of the gluten restriction in her diet, she did say that the meatloaf was very popular here. After which I promptly ordered the meatloaf and was very satisfied with my decision. The interior has horses on the walls and certainly reminds you of the virginia countryside. Overall, I'd say it's a great little spot on main street. In front royal of which, the first time I'd ever visited. It was a very strong impression of the whole town overall. If i'm ever in the area, I will be back to try something else or for sure try those collard greens again. Thanks. Mill street restaurant for a wonderful experience with friends! When I think of a local restaurant, you guys will be on my mind.

So glad I decided to stop by for breakfast. I was seated as soon as I walked in and was really impressed with the ambiance. It was quiet and everything was really clean. I ordered the French toast with a side of scrambled eggs and coffee. Everything was cooked to perfection and the service was impeccable. I can’t wait to stop in again for lunch or dinner ❤️

We had a wonderful time dining here on a whim during our trip to Shenandoah. Our server was so nice, and the food was better than expected!! My grilled chicken sandwich tasted amazing, my boyfriend loved his ribs, and everything else was great. We enjoyed the small town atmosphere and my bf said it reminded him of Gilmore Girls how many of the patrons seemed to know each other well. :)

Wonderful food and nice atmosphere! We happened upon this gem traveling from SC to MD. Had the Perfect Pasta (highly recommend!). Breakfast restaurant
Main Street Daily Grind CAFÉ is a charming and laid-back spot located on Main Street in historic Downtown Front Royal. The café offers a warm atmosphere, serving an array of coffee and espresso drinks, as well as delicious breakfast and lunch options. Visitors can enjoy the delightful seasonal coffees, such as the maple latte for fall. The café also prides itself on its extensive menu options, including vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free choices.
The breakfast sandwich was excellent—served hot, juicy, and well-balanced, with the ham and tomato pairing beautifully. The tortilla wrap was crispy and satisfying. The cappuccino was solid and warming, exactly what you’d hope for in a classic café setting. The tomato soup was a little underwhelming—slightly bitter and lacking the freshness you’d expect. We also had a scoop of Moose Tracks ice cream: a tart-sweet flavor that’s pleasant but a bit too icy in texture. The space itself is spacious but quite dim, which makes it feel a little dated or heavy, though some might find it cozy.

First visit after placing an order to pick up before we made an impromptu drive up Skyline Drive. The fact that you can do online order was very convenient. Food was decent and came out by promised time. This is your typical, locally owned small town spot that is well liked by patrons. Interior was clean and spacious.

A great little spot. We were traveling home from Shenandoah and love Front Royal. A cute little town. We needed some coffee and did not want a chain store. Found you all just driving by! Delicious latte! A lot of flavors to choice from. Also added a Blueberry hand pie. Get one, warm it up! Yum!!!

Daily Grind Coffee in Front Royal is the perfect spot to fuel up before a day of exploring. Their iced lattes are smooth and bold, easily one of the best in the area. It’s a laid-back place with friendly staff and reliably good coffee and food.

We had a great time eating here! The sandwiches were delicious, and the servers were friendly and helpful. If you’re near Front Royal, definitely stop by 😊

First visit: cute little place. Was disappointed by the quality of this particular meal however. Both of us had the chicken salad sandwich, one on wheatberry toast and the other on croissant and both agreed it was very bland. Also ordered waffle fries and they were a little more on the soft side, as opposed to crispy. Honey mustard was standard and yummy! Cashier was friendly. Would give them another try. Just a little underwhelmed with this particular visit.
Mattie M — Google review
Way better than Dunkin’ or Starbucks! The coffee here is delicious—rich, smooth, and clearly made with care. If you’re tired of the same old chains, this spot is a refreshing change. While the customer service could use a little polish, it’s not enough to keep me away. The quality of the coffee makes it worth the drive every time. Definitely a hidden gem!

Fantastic location downtown Front Royal. Great ambiance and quite large interior for sitting with great decor and antique feels. The service was great and accurate. I got the avacado toast with scramble eggs and it was amazing and the toast was perfect. The latte was a bit burned so I wish it were better. Will come back again.

Fantasyland Playground is a delightful destination that offers a little something for everyone, making it an ideal spot for families. As the sun sets, the atmosphere becomes even more inviting, with fewer children around to make supervision easier. The park features whimsical wooden play structures alongside a modern metal playground designed to be accessible for all abilities. Nestled near a serene creek and conveniently located close to restaurants, it's perfect for enjoying a picnic or hosting a cookout at one of the many tables available.
Lovely playground with a great variety of structures for kids. There are swings, slides, climbing walls, volleyball net, and more. Easy parking, plenty of benches.

Great variety of play structures with nice seating for parents. One of the best classic wooden playgrounds in the area!
LC H — Google review
They have 3 different playgrounds here ...one of them being a large wooden kids castle area, another being a modern one with a small rock climbing area. They also have a very nice splash pad area that the kids had a blast playing in and cooling off from the hot sun....with an ice cream truck that came through too!😁🤗
Nicole K — Google review
A fun 90s wooden playground is accompanied by a newer metal and plastic one. Volleyball fields, a nice Creek nearby, and now there are even food trucks across the parking lot (did someone say coffee!?!). A nice place to let the kids blow off steam and a unique wood build to keep them creative and entertained for hours. There are even picnic tables in the playground area. I like that the wood playground area is mostly fenced so the kids can't easily run off into the nearby parking.
Kimberly K — Google review
You can tell this place was built with love. My kids enjoy this whole place- they get blisters there. It's a safe space- many parents watch out for the kids there. I would make sure kids go to the bathroom BEFORE coming here, just in case it's locked. But your kids will have a blast here
Tiffany A — Google review
The park is huge. There were toddlers, preschoolers and on the out skirts dog walkers. There are 2 large playgrounds: one with old school wooden 4x4 equipment and climb-ons over dirt and mulch in the Fantasyland section and the second is the current style plastic slides, music makers, swings with a wheelchair accessible ramp in the newer section over the perma-rubber mulch. Yes, there were a couple of sketchy teens and older adult hanging out in the picnic pavilions but I assume it's one of the places they can go to have "something to do". There is plenty of parking and restrooms so you can spend the morning or afternoon with a picnic lunch or snacks with the kids. Lots of grassy areas too for kicking a ball around or playing a game of catch.
Sylvia T — Google review
Very nice playground! My toddler enjoyed exploring. I would recommend looking into replacing the metal slides with something that doesn’t heat up so hot in the sun
Katharyn G — Google review
This is a nice playground for children. The reason I did not rate it higher is bc there are no restrooms. We all know how kids are. They need a restroom!

We stumbled upon this little gem of a restaurant while driving through Front Royal. We love a good momo, and theirs were delicious. I got the house special curry + a side of veggies and naan. My husband got the goat biryani. The city had a slight sweetness to it but was well spiced. Be warned that they're not joking around with their spice levels though. I was conservative and got a 3 which was perfect for me...spiced but never felt like my mouth was on fire. My husband went for a 5 and said his mouth was a bit numb afterward lol. The staff were all great, very attentive, and very sweet with our 10month old. We'll definitely be back!

Located in downtown Front Royal, Virginia, the restaurant provides a warm and welcoming atmosphere where locals and tourists can enjoy delicious food while engaging in friendly conversations with the community.
What a treat! Great customer service, fantastic food, and fairly priced. That’s so rare these days. We happened to stop by when driving from DC to our home in TN and found this by way of searching for a breakfast stop. They seated us quickly and refilled our coffee constantly. The food was perfect. So happy we stopped here! I believe it was cash only so keep that in mind. We fed 8 people for under $100.

Good place for classic American-style breakfast. No mess, no fuss, just the good stuff. I got some chocolate pancakes with bacon, sausage, and scrambled eggs with cheese. Food was good for the price and portion. Perfectly average, and there's nothing wrong with that. Waitress was very friendly and attentive. Food came out surprisingly fast despite how busy it was. Biggest selling point is their pies: I was convinced to take home a slice of cherry and now I wish I bought a full pie 😭

Awesome place for a quick bite! I came with my son to have breakfast before heading out to Shenandoah National Park. The service was great. The waitresses were very friendly and quick to seat us and take our order. My son got some pancakes and I got an order of Sunnyside up eggs with hash browns, a toasted buttered English muffin, and some biscuits with sausage gravy. All the food came out super quick and was delicious. I really like how they turned my sons pancakes into a pig. The only minor gripe for me was the amount of sausage in the gravy. I think it should had a little bit more, but considering the very fair prices, it's not much of an issue. The coffee here was also excellent. We also got a fruit cup for dessert which was a perfect ending to our meal. The restaurant is on the smaller side, but we had no issue finding seating. It was very clean and had a very welcoming atmosphere. Pricing was very fair considering the food portions (not huge, just definitely more than fair). We definitely would've made a second visit to try the other offerings, but we didn't have time. This place is definitely recommended for anyone in the area.

She was so friendly and attentive and something about her made you feel like you were at grandmas house! I got an omelette and I thought it was great. Restaurant
Osteria Maria is a charming Italian restaurant located in Front Royal, VA. The atmosphere is welcoming and the service is top-notch, making diners feel right at home. The menu offers delicious dishes such as Ricotta Gnocchi and lasagna with flavorful bolognese sauce. While reservations are recommended due to its popularity, the staff takes time to engage with each guest, adding a personal touch to the dining experience.
Wonderful place. We started off with the calamari which was very tender. I had the Lasagna my wife had the Eggplant Parmesan and the father-in-law had Spaghetti and Meatballs. I had the Gelato and they had the Chocolate Mousse for dessert. The wine was also very good. Service was very friendly and they made you feel welcomed. I would highly recommend it.

We went by the reviews but we didn’t expect such a slow service. The waitress seemed uninterested in whatever we asked, but the food was ok. Overall our experience was ruined because of the slow service. Don’t recommend going there if you’re looking for quick service or if you’re hungry. We tried the calamari - was crispy and nicely cooked. Diablo pizza was flavorful, but we kept waiting for the parmesan cheese which we never got.

Amazing Italian food. Fun craft Italian beer and great red wine by the glass. We had pasta with vodka sau e which was amazing and a custom pizza. Recommend highly. We will be back.

Excellent food, a bit pricey. Great service. We were three of us and without drinks we spent 115 including tip. We went on Thursday night and they had nice soft live guitar.

A Caesar salad, lasagna and tiramisu. Get this and you will be so happy. Everything is fresh and delicious! 😋 The best lasagna I've ever had. Period. Unbelievably delicious 🤤

Absolute favorite Italian restaurant - closest thing to the actual dishes in Italy we've found regionally. Loved cacio e pepe and my wife loved the papardelle ragu. Service was warm and very attentive. Highly recommend.

In the late 80s, I lived in Germany. Although I am deeply in love with jaegerschnitzel, as a matter of variety, I also explored three different, first-generation Italian restaurants. The food was from Heaven. It was my first taste of Italian food absent the overly-sweetened American influence. 20 years later I ate authentic Italian on the Hill (an area of New York where five Italian families serve non-Americanized Italian dishes). Yet today I sit in Front Royal, Virginia, staring at a menu filled with the names of Italian dishes. This begs to ask. Is this real? Or is Virginia foolishly taunting those who would actually recognize real Italian food? I simply had to find out... To recap: I was seated immediately. My table and chair were immaculately clean. I was waited on within 10 seconds of being seated. It was a quiet, quaint little place, with an ambiance that begs you to fall in love. And so I started with an orange San Pellegrino and a caesar salad. The salad was fresh, and the dressing as perfect as any caesar salad could be, not drowned, but yet not wanting for more. For my entree, I went straight to the real test. Yes, the lasagna. While I command a thorough mastery of the English language, there is no language of this world that is even nearly capable of doing this lasagna justice. It is the single best I have ever tasted. Aside from returning here, I will eat no other lasagna for the rest of this earthly life. None. Ever. Only this. The tiramisu was authentic as well, and light enough to defy gravity. This entire dining experience was Heavenly. Am I awake? Or only dreaming? Perhaps there is only one way to find out. I must come back. I will return to this place one glorious day. Oh yes, I will.

Pizza restaurant
Melting Pot Pizza is a long-standing, family-run pizza parlor in Front Royal, VA. It offers thin-crust pies, wings, sandwiches, salads, and beer. The atmosphere is casual and relaxing with recent restroom renovations. While it can get crowded on weekends and has limited parking during peak times like LFK graduations, the food quality makes it a go-to pizza paradise. The pizzeria is known for its unique flavors and commitment to quality that sets it apart from others.
This place makes the perfect pizza! The soft crust and the way the cheese melts in every bite are just amazing. The aroma of the pizza was so tempting, and it tasted just as good as it smelled. We really enjoyed every dish, and the wings were a great addition – saucy and flavorful. If you’re a pizza lover, this spot is a must-try.

CASH ONLY, but they do have an ATM on site. You can tell a place is good when it's packed with locals. Still, we were able to get a table immediately on a Saturday night. The pizza crust is great and the toppings are generous. We had to try the fried pepperoni since we'd never heard of it before. It was crispy and delicious, like perfectly cooked bacon. Love that they also have soft serve here. Only complaint was the super boring TV programming. Most TVs were on some weird retirement benefits show without captions, so all you could see was people in suits droning on. Weird that all TVs were on that. At least one should have had some kid friendly programming or something.

Everytime we visit Front Royal we always make sure this is one of our stops. Best pizza around. They also have a drink called Cherry Smash that is great. Our server this time was Taylor. She was great. Very attentive. If you are in this area you need to check it out. **They only accept cash and checks**

When you find yourself in Front Royal, VA you can expect to hear over and over that the best pizza in town is at Melting Pot Pizza. When my partner Elisabeth and I ended up here with our nephew we confirmed that is for a very good reason. First, when you walk into the store you might feel like you have gone back in time a bit to simpler days. It’s not a time machine, that’s just the atmosphere Melting Pot drips, it feels like a place that hasn’t changed much since the 90’s and that’s a good thing. There are beer taps flowing, locals laughing and sports playing in the background. It’s a comforting space that makes you feel welcome immediately, and despite the fact that the parking lot was full we were seated immediately by a very cheerful hostess. When we got to our seats we decided to try an appetizer each, and a pizza each as well. Our waitress came over to take our order and did so with no notes or writing utensils at all! That’s trained skill, and when that happens you know you’re either in danger or in for a real treat. First the appetizers. I got the hot wings, they came out very hot and flavorful. I would say for this Texas boy, they were a little more on the mild side so I would order xtra hot next time but the chicken was juicy and the outside was crisp. We also ordered the fried pepperonis. We didn’t know exactly what to expect but this ended up being just that, fried slices of pepperoni - like little salty meat chips that you could dunk in ranch. We found them extremely addictive. Finally we got the bacon and cheese fries, I didn’t try these but my nephew said they were good and that the cheesy was an oozy and gooey treat. In short order we recieved our pizzas. This isn’t some doughy, thick crust that’s going to send you home rolling on your belly. This is flat crust. The crust was simple, you could taste the olive oil; like a crust I could make at home if I had any idea what I was doing. The sauce was just right, tangy and tomatoey and the cheese was stretching on every bite. I got a classic pepperoni, my partner got the chicken Alfredo and my nephew got the All The Way and on each pizza the toppings were fresh and crisp. This is simple pizza, and that’s exactly what Melting Pot is going for and has perfected. I’m giving it a 5/5 score because if you want a tasty pizza, and a great place to hang out in town this is your spot.

Fizzah S. Was a fantastic server. She was friendly and on top of things. Love to have her wait on us again. And of course the All the Way Pizza was awesome!

Melting Pot Pizza is hands down our family's favorite spot, our son even requested to bring all his friends here for his birthday dinner this year! The appetizers (give us all the wings, bacon cheese fries, and cheese sticks) and the pizza are the best, and the laid-back atmosphere makes it the perfect place to relax and spend time with your family and friends. A special shout-out to our favorite server Trent for being so sweet and attentive, always smiling, and making you feel like family. Make sure to join their online waitlist on your way there, as they stay busy (that should tell you something) and order extra to take home for later! In more than 17 years that I've been going Melting Pot has never disappointed!

Day 2

Off the beaten path
For day 2, if you don’t mind the extra trek, today covers more off the beaten path places like Dickey Ridge Visitor Center. Not quite as popular as Skyline Caverns, but still highly rated among many travelers. Accounting for getting around and average time spent, today’s activities could take about 7 hours.

Hiking area
The Dickey Ridge Visitor Center is a must-visit in Shenandoah National Park, offering essential facilities such as maps, exhibits, a bookstore, and restrooms. Situated at the park's northern end, it provides stunning valley views and serves as an excellent starting point for first-time visitors. Knowledgeable park rangers are available to assist in planning your visit and recommending the best hikes and activities based on your interests.
Beautiful drive on Skyline Drive. It was a hazy day, but we could still see far. Views of Shenandoah Valley on the west side overlooks, and some nice views of wilderness on overlooks facing east with mountain peaks and ridges on both sides. The Dark Hollows Trail was a nice hike down to waterfalls and back. It was crowded but beautiful, and a strenuous hike back up, so not recommended for people out of shape.

Dickey Ridge Visitor Center is the perfect first stop when visiting Shenandoah National Park. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, offering great advice on trails, scenic spots, and current conditions. The exhibits inside are small but informative, covering the park’s history, wildlife, and local geology. Step outside and you’ll find amazing views right by the parking area — perfect for photos, especially at sunrise or sunset. There are also clean restrooms, a gift shop, and plenty of maps and guides to help plan your day. If you want to start your Skyline Drive adventure on the right foot, make sure to stop here first.

Awesome. If you've never been to Shenandoah, this is a great place to start your visit. If you're passing through the area, please add a stop here. It's amazing. There are overlooks every mile or two, each giving you a different angle of the valley and mountains. The clouds are always present on the windward side of the mountains so theres a good chance youll drive through one. We did part of the drive as a one-off stop on the way to TN, but we liked it so much we did more of it the next day.

Very nice visitor center with lots of information and a gift shop. The restrooms are on the building close to it. They were pretty clean. Parking is spacious.

Skyline Drive VA The park ranger was so. nice. He also explained that Skyline drive was 105 mi. Long and the speed limit was 35mph. If you stop at many overlooks it could take 6 hours!! A fact we had not thought about. The photos are from the drive.
Margaret R — Google review
The gift shop was Not as big. I feel like they should sell some John Denver Shenandoah type of stuff. The workers were so kind and knowledgeable. I’ve been to some parks where the rangers don’t know diddly. It was raining that day - never hiked in the rain - we did the dark hollow falls trail 1.6 miles - absolutely beautiful- saw several birds - this is definitely in my top 5 It is common in parks but I was surprised to see the concentration of unprepared people- wearing sandals (it’s raining) or carrying small babies (there are slippery rocks) it was worrisome. Then we got to the parking lot and there were 2 blonde girls about 7-8 years old left unattended in the van. They were opening and closing doors - the trunk- I feel like they could have easily been taken. Nature relaxed me but that was stressing me out. I think the parents thought “oh it’s only a mile” but it’s not a flat ,straight mile, & on the way back it’s all uphill.

What a beautiful park. While entering I was able get my lifetime access pass. All the staff were pleasant and the facilities were all clean. We took a quick hike to a vista and then headed to our next destination. When we have more time we will be staying much longer.

If you're seeking a breathtaking experience in Shenandoah without the need for an extensive hike, Signal Knob Overlook is your perfect destination. Just a short drive south from Front Royal along Skyline Drive, this overlook boasts stunning west-facing views that are particularly magical at sunset. The expansive pull-off area provides panoramic vistas of the picturesque Shenandoah Valley and the winding Shenandoah River, as well as glimpses of the northern end of Massanutten Mountain.
We wanted to visit long time ago, but didn’t have the chance or maybe we always preferred a different place. Well, we were wrong. It’s amazing place, lot of visitors but still quite and a spectacular views, seemed like we were looking at a beautiful painting. Skyland also have the Highest point of view with a restaurant and a gift shop store and also you can rent a Cabin to stay there overnight and to enjoy the many trails.

An Unforgettable Vista - The Crown Jewel of Skyline Drive I've been coming to Shenandoah National Park for years, and I have to say, Single Nob Overlook might just be my favorite stop on the entire Skyline Drive. We visited in mid-October, and the experience was nothing short of magical. Let's start with the obvious: the view. It is absolutely breathtaking. The overlook provides a vast, panoramic vista that lets your eyes travel for what feels like forever. You're not just looking at a sliver of the valley; you're presented with a grand, sweeping canvas of the Shenandoah. On the day we went, the air was crisp and clear, and we could see the gentle roll of the mountains fading into a soft blue haze in the distance. But the real star of the show was the fall foliage. The valley was an incredible tapestry of color—fiery reds, brilliant oranges, and vibrant yellows, all woven together with the deep greens of the evergreens. It was like looking at a living painting. I must have taken a hundred photos, but none of them truly do it justice. You simply have to see it with your own eyes. This is more than just a quick photo op; it's a destination. We saw several families with picnic blankets and groups of friends just sitting on the rock wall, chatting and soaking in the scenery. It's a fantastic, easy-access place to bring loved ones. The atmosphere is peaceful and communal, with everyone sharing in the quiet awe of nature's display. It’s the perfect spot to create lasting memories without a strenuous hike. The drive to get here is also part of the adventure. Winding along Skyline Drive itself is a pleasure, with every turn offering a new, beautiful perspective of the park. The anticipation builds as you pass other overlooks, each lovely in its own right. But when you finally pull into Single Nob, you understand the hype. While there are many overlooks to choose from along the drive, this one truly defines what it means to have a "million-dollar view." It encapsulates the very essence and beauty of Shenandoah. If you only have time for a few stops, make Single Nob one of them. It is, without a doubt, one of the best.
Haris M — Google review
10/27/2023: Today the fall foliage has reached its peak! And this overlook has the best views among the north most overlooks on Skyline Drive that you won't want to miss out! Check out my photos and videos taken from here and you will definitely agree with me! My past review: This is an overlook we would mostly stop for a wide-angle valley views at the northern part of Skyline Drive.

Best place to catch a sunset Reach Atleast 30 minutes before sunrise Otherwise you can’t park your car there

Another great stop on the Skyline Drive, pullover, pop out, taking the view and get a couple pictures. Late October is usually peak colors.

We were motorcycle touring from Front Royal, VA to ride the entire Shenandoah Skyline Drive, and then the entire Blue Ridge Parkway. This was a pretty decent stop along the way which offers some great scenery and majestic views. Worth stopping at if you are in the area but I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

Royal Family Bowling Center

Bowling alley
Located in Front Royal, VA, the Royal Family Bowling Center is a versatile venue suitable for individuals and leagues alike. The center offers traditional bowling with options like bumper lanes and glow bowling events. Additionally, it provides food and drinks, youth programs, private event facilities, and a large arcade. Visitors have praised the friendly staff and cleanliness of the facility. While some noted a change to string pins instead of traditional ones, they still enjoyed the modern amenities and family-friendly atmosphere.
Best bowling alley in town (even if it's the only one)! Great staff, affordable fun, good selection of food for the whole family (they sell adults beverages, too), newly renovated arcade and bowling, of course! You'll find a smoking lounge, party room and even a couple video slots here. Birthday party rentals are also available here! Make sure you check their website for bowling league schedules or call ahead to check for open lanes. They're often busy on Sundays right at opening and during school breaks when families are in town.

I’ve enjoyed multiple local and not so local bowling alleys, Royal Family Bowling by far takes the top tier for me. The staff has been friendly and welcoming each time. The prices for bowling, food AND the arcade are very reasonable and the food is actually really good. We had my daughters birthday there, not only did we not schedule ahead, we just showed up with a group (7-8 total people) they not only accommodate, but were Very helpful the entire time. Thanks again for another great experience. We talked about making it a regular thing bringing the kids out and can’t wait to see yall again.

We had a blast. We are traveling and wanted something to do. This is the place! The food is excellent & the staff are just so nice! The bowling alley was clean and modern, very kid friendly. I love it and wish we had something on this scale back home. I can't recommend this place enough!

Had such a great time with the family at the bowling alley in front royal. It was a great time. Super affordable. Only complaint was this one guy asking my fiancé for an ID for an extra cup (we had previously ordered 2 pitchers of sprite and needed extra cups for our party of 6). Gave him a hard time for no reason. Half of me wants to say it was racism, the other half of me wants to say it was just a miserable old man but whatever. I went with my two kids and nephew along with my fiancé and his parents. We had a blast. All but one of the staff members were all smiles and sociable. The ladies behind the food counter were great and recomended the perfect food choices, and the guy at the counter was super friendly. I love how you can set the rails to go up per player to accommodate kids. Adult drinks were 👌🏼. Pizza was delicious. Bathrooms were really clean. Arcade was a fun after-game activity. We will definitely return and avoid the miserable old man at all cost (hopefully he’s not apart of the family business but who knows).

Park
Eastham Park is a serene and spacious park located by the river, offering various amenities for visitors to enjoy. It features three athletic fields, a paved riverside trail perfect for leisurely strolls, and even a dedicated dog park where furry friends can roam freely. Additionally, the park boasts a boat launch for those looking to explore the river. Visitors can take in the area's rich history through informative placards scattered throughout the park.
TO my surprise when I pulled up around 5 to 6 PM this place was seemingly crowded. Too much nice disruption to successfully try to get the fish in the main area part that is the one water body of the parking lot but pleasantly I noticed a dog path I can crown that lead me to peace and privacy and great fishing that like I was completely solo with nature.
Shelly R — Google review
Lovely park! There’s a walking trail along the river and a nice playground (for ages 5 and under).
Emma W — Google review
Tucked along the Shenandoah River, this park is a true hidden gem! 🌊🚶‍♂️ The paved walking paths are smooth and easy, perfect for a leisurely stroll or just soaking in the stunning river views. Families were everywhere, kids playing and laughing, while I enjoyed a peaceful picnic by the water. 🧺 The boat landing makes it a breeze for paddlers or anglers—casting a line here feels like a dream with the gentle river flow. Birdwatchers and photo buffs will love the wildlife and scenic spots. It’s free to visit, super family-friendly, and just the spot to unwind or adventure. I’m already planning my next trip back!

This place has everything! A decent parking lot, a well kept paved trail, nice soccer fields, a playground, gated dog parks, Porta Potty’s and beautiful river views. There are also grills, picnic tables and tons of trash cans. A great place to walk or just sit and relax! Fun for everyone!!!
Beng L — Google review
We loved it. We were only at the dog park section for smaller dogs. Plenty of room for dogs to roam. Quadruple the size of small dog park at Radford Virginia. I love the way the fence blends in to the background using wood post and rails along with wire fencing. Of course my boys RickyBobby and Benji enjoyed it more than I did
Phillip C — Google review
Beautiful park by the Shenandoah River. There's an expirence waiting for everyone here. Kids can play, nature enthusiasts can watch birds, watch the river, take lots of pictures, or have a picnic while watching the river go by. For the fish catchers or boaters, there is a boat landing and the flow on the river is nice for a paddle or to drop your line in for a bite. If you enjoy a walk or just to sit and relax by the riverside, it is equally breathtaking and memorable.
Amanda S — Google review
It is very quiet and pleasant to walk along the tree-lined path beside the beautiful river and enjoy the river scenery. It is recommended that the trail be a loop.
Xiurong — Google review
It seems to have nice walking trails. However, I was looking for a dog park for my dog. They have 2 (1 small dog, 1 large dog). They are HUGE. Many acres. However, they are a long way from the parking area. I am handicapped and I walked at least a 1/4 of a mile to get there. If I am going to walk my dog that far, why do I need a dog park, except socialization. And guess what? No dogs. Also, it's not wheelchair accessible at all. I gave it 3 stars because I am sure others would enjoy it, but for me, it was a disappointing 0.

Caverns & Caves
Skyline Caverns, located in Front Royal, VA, is a natural wonder boasting rare rock formations and anthodites that are 60 million years old. Discovered in 1937 by Walter S. Amos, the caverns offer guided one-hour tours daily from 9 AM to 4 PM. Visitors can explore the 1 and 1/8th mile-long underground trail with a knowledgeable guide and marvel at the white spiky rock formations known as anthodites.
What a fun experience! The caverns are amazing. The tour guide was very knowledgeable. Not as larger or deep as Luray, but truly worth the trip. Wear a jacket, it's cool inside and good walking shoes. The ground can be uneven and slippery in some places. There's a good amount of stairs to climb at the end, so be prepared for that. There's also a great gift shop that has reasonable prices. I highly recommend!

AMAZING experience! Tour guy was awesome. Loved his dad jokes, overall personality and how kind he came off. Great guy to educate people. Very patient. Gift shop has a lot of cool things. Recommend checking everything out first before choosing or you’ll end up with your arms full with stuff. They are priced very well. 10/10 recommend and I will probably return even though I live in Illinois.

Beautiful experience! Andrew is one of the best tour guides that I've ever had. Be aware that the caverns are around 52 degrees and proper shoes will make you experience less stressful.

Visiting the Skyline Caves was a wonderful travel experience. The unique stalactites created a beautiful picture under the wonderful color combination. The tour guide explained in detail. Unfortunately, my English is not good and my understanding is limited. I bought a refrigerator magnet in the gift shop as a permanent souvenir. I will recommend it to my friends who come to visit.

Review: Skyline Caverns We recently visited Skyline Caverns with our 15-month-old son, after reading several Google reviews that it could be a good outing for families with kids and strollers. Here’s how our experience stacked up. What we liked Guided tour format**: The tour guide-led approach adds structure and storytelling to the cavern exploration, which is nice for older kids and curious adults. Cavern scenery**: The caverns themselves are impressive to see and offer a fun environment to explore and imagine. What to expect (and caveats) Cost and value**: The experience was over $50 for two adults, with our son admitted for free. Depending on your family size, this can add up, so factor in the overall value for younger children. Accessibility for little ones**: The tour involves 61 total steps and an uneven path, which can be challenging for toddlers or infants. We used a wrap to carry our son to prevent falls, but it required extra effort and attention. Timing**: While some reviews mention around an hour, our tour lasted closer to 1 hour and 30 minutes. It felt longer than anticipated for a small child, especially in a dim environment. Other families**: We observed that many of the younger kids in our group (ages roughly 6 and under) had a harder time with the length and lighting. A number of children appeared older than our son and seemed more comfortable with the pace and environment. Recommendations If you have very young children (like a 15-month-old), consider whether you’re prepared for a longer, dimly lit walk with uneven terrain and several stairs. A stroller may be impractical due to the stairs and narrow passages, so a carrier or wrap is often necessary. Plan for extra time and a slower pace if you’re traveling with toddlers. The guided nature is helpful, but it can be tiring for little ones. If possible, verify current pricing and tour duration before you go, as policies and experiences can vary by day. For families with older kids (roughly 4–12+), Skyline Caverns seems better aligned with their curiosity and stamina, given the length and stairs. Bottom line Skyline Caverns is a worthwhile cavern experience with beautiful formations and a solid guided tour. However, for families with very young children, it can be a long, uneven, and dimly lit outing that isn’t ideal for the youngest in your party. If your kids are older and mobile, you’ll likely enjoy the adventure more. For families with toddlers, weigh the costs and physical demands carefully, or consider alternative activities that are more stroller-friendly.

First time visiting a cavern. Be sure to wear a jacket or sweater—it gets very chilly inside—and comfortable shoes, as the pavement is uneven in some areas. We discovered this cavern while driving home from the Natural Bridge. My 8- and 9-year-old boys really enjoyed the tour. Some parts of the path had handrails, while others did not, so keep that in mind if you need extra support. If you’re uncomfortable in tight or enclosed spaces, this may not be the best activity for you. Our tour guide was engaging and even funny at times, which added to the experience. However, the cashier at the gift shop wasn’t very friendly, which was a bit disappointing. There are plenty of souvenirs to choose from & picnic tables outside if you want to have a snack before getting back on the road.

Most colorful and unique cavern I've been to yet. The tour is guided and takes about an hour. Our tour guide, Beckett, was great. He was very informative and allowed for us to take our time to take photos and check everything out. Special highlight - this is one of a few places in the world which hosts anthodites. This was my first time ever seeing them, and I must say, they were pretty neat! Fernando the "cavern fish" - if you will, was a great surprise too. 10/10 Recommend.

Excellent. Well worth a visit. We went after doing the Skyline Drive. Our guide Courtney was excellent. Very knowledgeable and engaging, we learned lots. Fascinating. Large gift shop. Easy parking, suitable for RVs. The tour is an hour, no need to book just turn up and book in. My sons, 12 and 14 and I really enjoyed.

Lasagna 14.29 has a sauce on it, as opposed to in it. Has very little meat and very thick noodles. It doesn't taste like lasagna. See photo. Personal Pizza w/3 toppings- 12.50 has a weird flavor like it has white sauce on it, but it doesn't have the taste of oregano and basil. I'm not finishing the piece. The salad it's all iceberg. Pretty awful meal. First dressing was ranch what I asked for but what came out tasted exactly like Caesar. She brought out a different salad w/1000. My friend is the one who paid. I looked at the receipt which cost $37 for this meal which seemed a little steep. They're charging more on the receipt than they do on the menu.

The food was out of this world good! We got a buffalo calzone and it was super flavorful. My wife got the spaghetti wait marinara and said it was tasty. Very easy to order the meal on their website and pick it up. Only downside is that they did not provide any plastic silverware or napkins for a large meal like this.

This is an updated review of this amazing restaurant. I've been coming here for years and I am VERY impressed with the food and service here. Quality, price, atmosphere, service...they have it all covered! ---Added Later--- Their food is absolutely amazing, so I came back and was pleasantly surprised. The food AND service was simply amazing. Kathy was my waitress, and she has been there for years. She has a wonderful personality and really made my dining experience wonderful. ---Back again I usually get either the chicken parm or the capellina punanesca...both are ALWAYS amazing. Today, I tried the zitti arrabiata and was not disappointed. Terra, my waitress, recommended it, and I was very happy! Portion sizes with everything I've had here are always big and delicioso!

I order a chicken, spinach and mushroom over pasta dish with alfredo sauce. The serving was huge but it was surprisingly bland. The chicken breast filets had zero seasoning, they looked almost boiled and their Alfredo sauce was just boring. It needs a zing. The atmosphere was very quaint and appealing and my partner's steak and cheese came out very quickly.. I was still eating salad and he was half finished with his sub when my pasta came out. They should have come out together. Their french fries that came with his sub were fresh, hot and obviously brand new. They were very good. I'll go back, but I won't be ordering that again. As an addendum, I've ordered their carbonara for carryout before and it was very good. This is the first time I dined in. They have a large selection on their menu and in looking forward to trying something else.

We’re accustomed to authentic Italian cuisine, and this place did not disappoint! We ordered the manicotti, baked ziti, chicken parmesan, and their meatballs — every dish was delicious, and the sauce was absolutely perfect. The salads were fresh, and everything came out at just the right time. Our server, Ian, was helpful, attentive, and made the experience even better. We’re disappointed we don’t live closer since we’re from out of town, but this restaurant is truly a hidden gem that we’ll remember. Highly recommend to anyone who loves genuine Italian food done right!

Have been back several times recently and so I am raising back to 5 star . Good food good service . 12/10/2023 Had lunch with parents. Dropped review to 4 stars . Server was polite and took care of an issue I had with my plate , so that was good . 10/29/2023 Split a Ultimate Meat Pizza with Pineapple with Dad . Mom had Chicken Alfredo with Broccoli. 3 side salads . 06/25/'23 Shared the Hawaiian pizza and 2 house salads with dad and mom had the Chicken Ceasar salad . They have expanded into the next store and updated the decor . Specials looked good too. I updated from 4 star to 5 since they updated the space. See new pics . 04/16/'23 We had the Bruschetta, house salad W/ Meatball sub , chicken Pineapple salad , mixed sautéed veg platter , chicken salad . See pics . Service was very nice food portions are big. Renovating but in full service so consider that . 12/4/'22 Enjoyed the Lobster ravioli W/ shrimp special , parents had spaghetti w/ meat sauce and meatballs , salads and bread . Appetizer was bruschetta. Had a meat lovers with Pineapple a meaty Hawaiian pizza essentially. Salads with extra onions and the fried mushroom appitizer .All tasted good . Polite staff .

Two days ago there were about 13 or so of us there for lunch. Folks from North Carolina to Pennsylvania came and since I am from the area, and they are mostly of Italian ancestry, I suggested your restaurant. Solemn occasion, but nonetheless our experience was as amazing as I knew it would be. Tables were ready for us when we arrived. I apologize that I did not get the servers name, but she was perfect. Attentive and friendly. And the food came out in amazingly short order and all together! What a feat for so many people. And the food! It was so delicious and we even had a professional chef with us who loved the food. This was an important time for us all, for we had lost a loved one, and your restaurant was amazing. Thank you for being the great place you are!

Absolutely Terrible!🤮 The pizza has no flavor, taste like cardboard, feels like cardboard, has barely any sauce or cheese. Never going back again. tbh, you are better off with Kings and Little Ceasars.

True Italian Pizza. Ranks in my top 3. Real Italian Cheese and ingredients. You will taste the difference. Owner and staff were very personable. I live in SC, and look forward to my next trip to VA just to eat here again. This is the true old school pizzeria! Loved it.

Best pizza in Front Royal. I was getting used to eating "pizza" like Dominos at birthday parties with my kids. "Why did I love pizza growing up if it tastes so bad?" Anthony's reminds me of what pizza actually is - the real kind - the kind I loved eating growing up :) Staff was friendly and professional. Space inside is bigger than it looks from the outside. Lots of natural light from the big windows. Thursday special is awesome. Great spot.

Our server Damian was fast and efficient. The food was also fast very hot and super yummy. I got the baked ziti and man it was packed with cheese and sauce. Great portion size enough for dinner and a lunch tomorrow 😀. I will definitely be coming back for the great food and atmosphere.

We brought our Cub Scout troop here after visiting Skyline Caverns. Great food and extremely friendly staff. We're definitely coming back when we're in the area again.

Good pizza at reasonable prices. Lots to choose from on the menu here so there's something for everyone, not just pizza.

Anthony's Pizza is affordable but tasty. Classic cheese is reminiscent of NY style pizza. Thursday is customer appreciation and they offer a great discount. Great options for customizing your pizza, letting you create a new favorite. Toppings are all fresh and quality. The owner Frank and his staff are always friendly and keep the shop clean.

Food on a road trip it's always important. Making sure that it's delicious is also super important. This place was completely unexpected. We picked it randomly on our trip home from down south. We ordered small 9 inch pizzas and we're totally blown away. Opening the box was like viewing a piece of artwork for the first time. The cheese was cooked perfectly, the crust was cooked perfectly. Well done to The front Royal foxes on making some Dynamite pizza for me and my 8 year old.

We ordered pickup yesterday 9/23/25. At the time of our arrival the counter person at Point of sale was knee deep in phone calls as well as several walk-ins, including us. The gentleman was new, which we found out later, but he accidentally messed up our order. So we waited an extra 10 mins or so to get the correct pizza and onion rings. Both of which were given at no extra cost and we got three free small pizza coupons for the wait as well. We showed grace in our additional wait time and never expressed frustration, but the business still went above and beyond to ensure our happiness. Exceptional customer service and hospitality. Kudos to Fox Pizza and the Owners/ Staff. Great establishment!

Soooo.... we almost always order delivery. We also always put a note NOT to ring the doorbell. I'm not sure why we put the note because all but once, the driver knocks and then rings the doorbell for good measure. This time we also had the honor of having our pizza shaken and stired..... Normally, the food is great. I know delivery drivers can be hard to come by.... but.... PLEASE read the notes and don't shake my pizza .... Update: the owner reached out to us and was more than apologetic. They knew our order and had looked into how often we ordered. They offered generous incentives to return. I assured them that we never planned to stop using them and we have continued to love Fox's and order often. 5 stars all around! Today, we put in an order for pick up. The order was confirmed at 4:22 and we rolled up about 10 mins later. The team said that it wasn't ready yet which was fine. When it was ready, Ryan carried it out, but gravity claimed the onion rings. He apologized and asked for us to let him make another order for us. He made a double order and apologized a million more times when he brought them out. This level of care and service can only be found in these little towns and thats a huge part of why we love Fox's.

Now this classic place knows how to do wings, pizza and cheesesteaks just right! On this recent visit had a standard cheesesteak with everything and it was prepared fresh, no overlooking, and great flavor combo of ingredients. Next time I'm back in Front Royal I will definitely be back.

Pizza was okay. Kids chicken tenders had a funny gray color. And I tried the wedge it was so soggy, it had zero crisp. I'm definitely not a fan. Driver was kind.
