Vang Vieng

Vang Vieng is a small town north of Vientiane, on the Nam Song River in Laos. It's surrounded by striking limestone mountains and caves. Tham Poukham, to the west, is a cave with a blue-green lagoon and a reclining Buddha statue. North is the deep Tham Nam Cave, which has a spring at its entrance. Nearby, Tham Xang Cave has a stalactite resembling an elephant. The town is home to 16th- and 17th-century monasteries.

Tham Chang, also known as Tham Jang Cave, is a popular tourist spot in Vang Vieng. It is accessed via a bridge over the Nam Song River and is known for its picturesque scenery and historical significance as a former bunker. The cave features a spring inside where visitors can swim, offering a tranquil and secluded experience.
You have to cross the river by ferry(Google maps shows a bridge, but that bridge must be gone since years). Entrance was 20k KIP per person. Was a cool cave and can recommend. The lagoon in front was actually the best we visited. Lagoon 1,2 and 3 are far away but do not have the same clear water as this one and at the time we visited there was almost nobody(3 people or so).
Felix A — Google review
This is an amazing place! To relax, explore, have fun, picnic with family or friends! 20k per person - you have a boat, 1 huge cave to explore(2 sides), 1 water cave, a blue lagoon (more like a water park with zipping, jumping stages, etc) and a picnic area with tables and some stores to buy food, clothes, etc. Bring your shorts/bikini or you will regret it.
Tiago — Google review
U have to hop into a small boat which is not a boat by anyway 🤣. It was so breathtaking this cave. Wonderful to explore this cave. Very easy to get to. 😍 A very beautiful view is awaiting from the top. Need to climbs few hundred steps (roughly 300+) if I not mistaken.
Shalini S — Google review
The prettiest of all lagoons, well developed with some jumping thingies, zip line, amaaaaazing water cave & a normal cave that has lights and a walking path. Chill spot no matter your age There's changing rooms & toilets Unfortunately defecating and urinating in the cave prohibited, unless u can afford it The bridge to the lagoon was crushed by the river couple of years ago, there's a cool boat taking you to the other side for 20k
Maciej S — Google review
A nice cave near the city center. 30k KIP to enter. You cross the river by a float to reach the other side. Bring good shoes because it might be slippery in the cave. Bring swimming suit because there is a nice blue lake? And many people enjoy swimming inside
Vy B — Google review
A spacious cave along the Nam Song River, notable for its historic significance as it was discovered during the civil war when nearby villagers were seeking refuge deep in the forest. Because its high location offered a perfect view of Vang Vieng, the entire village moved there to sit out the war. Need to climb a few hundred steps of stone stairway to reach the entrance of the cave. A walk round the cave should take less than an hour
CK C — Google review
This place has everything to enjoy a sunny day for 20k kip : -Beautiful lagoon with translucid water -Jump in water platforms 3m, 5m, 8m high -Zipline to jump in water -Water cave a bit scary but so cool to swim in a cave -Big cave after 150 steps -Finger food good prices -One changing room -Walkable from town (30 minutes)
Jérémy D — Google review
Incredible caves and several other options to explore here. Caves are beautiful but you need to walk up lots of steps to enter.

Blue Lagoon Flying offers a stunning experience, but it can get overcrowded during the day. To fully enjoy the lagoon, it's best to visit early in the morning before the crowds arrive. If you want to escape the masses, there are caves to explore with a flashlight. Overall, visitors have reported great experiences and breathtaking views at Blue Lagoon Flying.

Nam Song River is a picturesque spot in Vang Vieng, Laos, offering a range of activities and stunning natural scenery. Visitors can relax on wooden pergolas by the riverbank, listen to music, dip their feet in the clear river water, and enjoy a cold beer. The backdrop of karst mountains adds to the spectacular ambiance. Tubing down the river is described as thrilling with breathtaking scenery along the way.
Nice slow kayaking and swimming if you want. Get a beer and enjoy.

Nam Song River is what happens when Mother Nature decides to show off, dramatic limestone cliffs, serene waters, and just enough mosquitoes to remind you it’s still real life. The highlight? A wooden hanging bridge that looks like it was engineered by either monks or Jenga enthusiasts. Cross it if you dare. It wobbles just enough to question your recent dietary decisions, but not enough to void your insurance. Now the riverside restaurants, absolute gems. Bamboo platforms hanging over the water, cold Beerlao in hand, and grilled everything on a stick. You eat with a view, and the fish eat whatever you drop. Circle of life. The vibe is half Instagrammer, half barefoot backpacker, and somehow it works. You’ll hear a guitar, a river, and someone screaming mid zipline all at once.

With the karst mountains as your backdrop and a clean, clear (in dry season) river. It's a spectacular place to just relax by. We came to tube down the river and it was thrilling. I couldn't stop looking at the scenery and catching glimpses of people's lives whilst journeying down. I've heard that it wet season the river flows much faster, is muddier and more dangerous. I've also heard that people can get pink eye from the river in wet season. We came in dry season and found the water to be clear, we didn't get pink eye and the river was only fast in places, there were points that you would have to help your tube along.

Nice place for tourist attractions and many activities to do like Hayaking and tubing along Nam Xong river with Limestones mountain cliffs as a background. There are popular and good caves that worth to visit. However, food are expensive and many tourists including local people not to care about environment enough so far. Overall, good holiday destination. Travelling time about 3 hours by car from Vientiane Capital.

(Translated by Google) In addition to cave rafting and Elephant Cave, the entire one-day trip is all about rafting on the Nam Song River! At 13:00, after rafting from the cave, we drove half an hour to the rafting river bank. There will be about 2 hours of rafting time down the Nansong River. After the car drove to the shore, the boat was launched, seats were assigned, oars were prepared, and preparations were underway... Planning begins! Dear friends, please note that rowing in a boat can actually be very painful. Please don’t row too hard. After all, we are going down the river. There is a team leader behind us two old people. Along the way, the scenery is beautiful, the cool breeze blows, the water waves are fast, and it is quite exciting... (water splashes from the bow of the boat... There are many bars on both sides of the Nam Song River. I heard that foreigners love to come here to find pleasure... It was not lonely for two hours, and everyone would splash water on each other and fight... There are also businesses that rent rubber bands in Vang Vieng City. Travelers can sit and float all the way down the river... After 40 minutes of rafting, we came to a river Bar, resting ashore here is actually a placement marketing, similar to a rest stop... The bar is simple but the music is quite strong. The bar also has a basketball hoop, please note that water will be sprayed on the backboard... All players will be "wet" when they arrive at the finish line at 15:00 and disband on the spot after returning their equipment. It offers a delightful fusion of French cooking techniques with local favorites, presenting a menu that includes both Lao and Western cuisine. The restaurant prides itself on serving well-plated, quality dishes with excellent service.
So good! A lovely deck overlooking the river with the most amazing food and great service. If you plan to come for dinner, definitely make reservations. We went several times, and everything we tried was delicious. The larb was amazing, the fish in banana leaves was great, we really liked the pork skewers with lemongrass and even the beef jerky appetizers was good. Happy hour is until 7pm with 50% of all drinks.

We absolutely love this restaurant. We stayed at the hotel and also had our little wedding ceremony there. Our “reception dinner” was beautiful and delicious. They even arranged a table for us and our guests by the pool which was stunning. I also loved buffet breakfasts and their cappuccino is my favorite. And needless to say that the staff is simply amazing and some of the nicest people we’ve ever met. We were treated like family and we cannot recommend this place enough 🤗 P.S. The G&Ts are a real steal and they are delicious 😋 so you’re gotta be careful with those - very easy to drink a few too many by the pool 😅

Food and service were good - we were the only ones there at lunch time and they helped us to the top floor seating even though it said closed. As for the food: chicken wings were decent, the meatball soup was so refreshing and tasty and the mango sticky blue rice was very yummm. There was a small confusion which we realised later that everyone checks USD so thoroughly they don't even accept notes with fold creases.

It's an upscale place with corresponding level of service and a lovely view. I tried discovery menu, and while the food was plentiful, I felt a bit disappointed about the taste. I have a feeling they downscale the spices hoping to please the Western palate, however I don't like bland food. Perhaps Lao food is meant to be more herbal than spicy, but this was not much of either.
Inga K — Google review
The food, ambience and service was absolutely fantastic and I would 100% recommend visiting during your stay in Vang Vieng. We ended up dining here four times during our trip and can say that both the Laotian and Western dishes were fantastic. The spaghetti carbonara was one of the best I’ve ever eaten and my partner loved all the Laos dishes. The restaurant is beautiful and the staff are incredibly thoughtful and accommodating. They even have a happy hour! I would say to book in advance as they limit the number of diners to ensure top quality ambiance for all. Thank you so much for having us!

We had high expectations of this place, especially when we had rather bad experiences in other restaurants where vegetarian food was offered. This was no difference. We ordered the Traditional Mixed Steamed Vegetables Seasoned with ginger, sesame seeds and chilies. We mentioned that we were happy that it would be seasoned with chilies as we like spicy food. When the food arrived it had no chilies on it and it was completely tasteless. no salt, no pepper, no soja sauce. The waiter mentioned that they didn't know how spicy so they decided instead to cook it without it. So my question is, why do you offer Seasoned veggies with chilies and ginger on the menu if you later decide that it's better not to serve it as described even though we specifically asked for it. We had the tiniest slice of ginger and no chilies. Had to ask for it instead and all I got was a bit of chili powder on top. Maybe next time ask the customer if they are ok with you changing the dish instead of assuming, even though we kindly asked to make it spicy as mentioned on YOUR menu. Please, stop offering things you won't deliver. Once again, no good food here neither and the prices are ridiculously high for low quality food. Not recommended for vegans. Thank you for the kind service though. But the cook needs to improve.

We were quite hungry after a full day motorbiking across beautiful Vang Vieng exploring caves, vistas, and their amazing landscapes. Restaurant du Crabe d’Or didn’t disappoint. The restaurant is located in a beautifully designed, and traditionally appointed space. The service was stellar - efficient and courteous. We opted for the set traditional meal which features traditional Lao dishes. Ingredients were fresh, the seasoning and sauces were very tasty. There is also a western menu to choose from. I highly recommend dining at Restaurant du Crabe d’Or while visiting Vang Vieng.

Restaurant
Gary's Irish Bar - The Rising Sun is a beloved spot in Vang Vieng, known for its fantastic food, drinks, and top-notch service. It's a hotspot for young Western travelers, offering a vibrant atmosphere that transitions from a daytime restaurant to an energetic bar. The menu features Irish comfort foods and burgers, complemented by a selection of local and imported beers and whiskeys. Visitors can catch live music performances in the evenings and watch major sporting events on TV.
A very good, proper Irish bar. We've been travelling South-East Asia for 10 months now and is the most genuine Irish bar we've come across. Gary runs a good show and makes the effort to come talk to the customers. Ended up eating here as it was pouring rain outside and the food was surprisingly good. Decent burger & bettered fish & chips. The chips were proper homemade with real potatoes. Very nice sauces and coleslaw too. Garlic bread was also tasty. The real winner here is the Guinness. Very good pint considering the location, I've definitely had worse pints at home in Ireland. Nicest Guinness we've had since we left Ireland 10 months ago. Keep up the good work. They show football matches & the music they play is also excellent.

A great place to come for a drink or some food! The burgers they serve are delicious. The atmosphere is always lovely and they have good music playing. The drinks are good (they have happy hour on cocktails from 6 - 10), the vibes are great, and they have a pool table and darts. The staff are very friendly and so is Gary the owner! A must-visit in Vang Vieng

Food was GREAT. Had the roast chicken, and also the chips with cheese and gravy and it did not disappoint! Best Irish bar food we’ve been to whilst traveling round SE Asia. Great home comfort foods with LOTS of beer options. Service was great as well, staff were all friendly and attentive!
Danyelle S — Google review
You have to visit Gary’s bar at least once if you’re in Vang Vieng, whether it’s for the Guinness, the food, the pool table, the atmosphere or the incredibly friendly staff (including the man Gary himself!) I think I visited 4-5 times during my stay in vang Vieng. Great atmosphere, good drinks selection and decent music too. Played (terribly) lots of a pool and had many beers. The food menu here is top notch, a taste of home is just what we needed!! Not to mention it tasted incredible - bangers and mash with gravy, chicken steak with peppercorn sauce and cheesy chips with gravy. All were delicious. The only thing I’d mention is the curry sauce is more of a Thai green curry flavour more than the uk curry sauce you might be expecting - still tasted great though :)
Leo G — Google review
Gary’s Irish bar is an incredible place. The food will take you on journey, the chips have the perfect homemade taste that every Brit is adjusted to, childhood memories came rushing back after one mouthful. The burger was outstanding, the beef was done perfectly, accompanied by the melted mozzarella and secret sauce ( I think it’s just mayo and ketchup shhh) made this burger everything I had been dreaming of after two weeks on street food. The sausage and mash alone is a contender for the number 1 dish on the menu, the peppery gravy the imported Irish pork sausages and the fluffy, tasty mash. The atmosphere of this place feels electric the music is great and there’s a free pool table and dart board, they have 3/4 pints of beer Lao on draught if you’ve had enough of bottles. The facilities here are kept well too nothing worse than being scared to use the lavatory after a skinful of beers.
Adam T — Google review
Tasty food with huge portions, a free pool table, and Guinness on tap. We came here a few times and always had a good experience — no issues after eating here. Definitely recommend!

Viman Vang Vieng Thai-German Restaurant offers a diverse culinary experience, serving both Western and Asian dishes in an elegant setting. Run by Mr. Kaz, who has a background in both Thai and German cuisine, the restaurant is known for its fabulous schnitzel and delicious curries. With over 400 5-star reviews, it's like taking a culinary world tour under one roof.
The best food i had in the two months traveling! In a week in Vang Vieng i ate there 5 times. As a backpacker the price was a bit high for me, but i didn’t really care cuz the food was just so good! I had the veggie schnitzel and my boyfriend had the chicken schnitzel with mashed potatoes, the portions were perfect, the schnitzel was crispy in the best was possible And the owner (chef) was just the nicest guy, u can see how much he loves cooking and talking to people, every time i ate there we talked for 30 minutes and i enjoyed it so much. I really recommend eating there just a lovely guy with the best food.
Renee — Google review
We had the schnitzel with fried potatoes, curry, and the Kaiserschmarrn. Alongside, we enjoyed a nicely chilled Namkhong beer and a pleasant chat with the friendly owner, Kaz, after he personally prepared the dishes out front. The schnitzel was quite good, especially considering the location – though not quite at a level that would stand out in Germany or Austria. Unfortunately the fried potatoes were rather bland in our opinion. The curry was tasty but didn’t leave much of an impression compared to others we have had in Southeast Asia. Our clear highlight was the Kaiserschmarrn with homemade jam – absolutely delicious! On the downside, the portions were quite small, especially considering the relatively high prices. -> Conclusion <- If you’re craving schnitzel or Kaiserschmarrn, this place is definitely a must visit! Even if you’re just someone who enjoys exploring different places to eat or appreciate a friendly conversation with the owner it’s still worth giving this one a chance – don’t judge it by appearances. However, if you’re really hungry, you might want to consider another option.
RockyRoxin — Google review
Schnitzel has a good taste and so is the curry. But the portion are to small and way to pricey (180k for schnitzel and 160k for curry). You find good and bigger schnitzel and curry options for less than half the price just around the corner. Owner is a nice guy and its all freshly made...
Fabio I — Google review
Very enjoyable experience. The Schnitzel is perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious. The owner, Kaz, is a lovely and hospitable gentleman who cares about his craft. The restaurant itself has a nice vibe with some colorful lights and good music playing. I definitely recommend you stop in and get something to eat.

This place is so endearing. It's a one man show and the chef is a great amalgamation of Asian (Lao/Thai) and German influence. He will give you an exact time as to how long he will take to prepare your meal. We are here during low season and it took 15 minutes because he said he was going to make the rice fresh. Thing to get here is the schnitzel (came with delicious potatoes!) and the Thai curry which he recommends. Honestly that's what he's known for as well...and it's really good. There are cards, chess, board games, etc strewn about so you can entertain yourselves while you wait without listlessly staring at your phones. Hah! All in all, this was a great dinner. And the chef is great to talk to as well. We wished we'd had more time just to hang out with him after our meal. The prices are typical for the tourist area.
Rishabh P — Google review
Wow! Kaz produces this incredible food all by himself in the open kitchen and it is amazing. I’ve had plenty of schnitzels and potato’s in my life but never did i expect that here in Laos would i have one of the best ones ever!!

The best and most authentic schnitzel in laos and such a lovely guy, kaz is making one of the best if not the best schnitzel i had. So so worth a try when in vang vieng plus he is so kind and lovely. A musy try when in town!

Great place, we had the chicken and turkey Schnitzel with Erdinger beer. The owner was a thai-german with decades worth of experience in his job. The Schnitzle made me feel like I’m back home again, but the conversations we had, were even better and really interesting. If you ask him he will tell you many exciting story’s about how he ended up living in Laos or advices for your future travels. The food might be above some peoples ideal budget, but for me it was more than worth the taste and experience. We can highly recommend going there and try it out by yourself

Came here twice once for dinner and then for breakfast. Their wood fired pizzas are delicious and fresh and the atmosphere is so lovely. The view from the terrace is beautiful it’s such a lovely place to enjoy a meal. The breakfast was tasty and there are lots of different options.

Needed to change it up from Lao options and burgers, so we decided pizza would be a good option. It's hard to go wrong with a actual brick and wood burning oven. The boys enjoyed the pepperoni. I opted for Hawaiian to appreciate local pineapple. Paired it with some cold wine to go with the theme. Very enjoyable. Just wish the service was a bit better. Nobody brought plates for the pizzas. Fortunately they're out in the open, so we were able to service ourselves. Overall, a good option for pizza.

I stayed in Vang Vieng for 1 week and I came here almost every night, it had the best food ever!! Defo best food in Lao. They have so many options and different cuisines, my favourite was the beef larb, so delicious I think about it ALL THE TIME. The view is also stunning. And service is quick.

Lovely bar/restaurant to sit in and enjoy the river and the amazing mountain views. Good range of local and international options. The spring rolls were great and the beer cold. As others have noted the service is very inattentive but this seems to be the way in Vang Vieng so just flag staff down or get things yourself. The balcony is a place to watch the sunset with a beer.

Great spot, excellent freshly ground coffee and good chicken Larb. Is it the most authentic, prob not but perfect for my tourist taste bud. Location is excellent (look, not super clean) but it’s good for the price point.

Good price for the views that you get. Simple place with plenty of vegetarian options with tofu. During the day is quiet, perfect for sitting, reading and enjoying the views.

August 2025 I've been to Vang Vieng a few times now. I've seen the tubing, the hostels, the backpackers trying to find themselves in a puddle of Beerlao. And amidst all that glorious chaos, there's Greens. I've been coming here for the last 3 years. Greens isn't fancy. There are no white tablecloths, no sommeliers with ponytails telling you about the terroir of their grapes. It's just a joint. A place where you can get a proper meal. And by proper meal, I'm talking Laotian food. The kind that makes you sweat, that makes your lips tingle, and that reminds you that you are, in fact, alive. The laab. This isn't some tourist-trap version, bland and apologetic. This is the real deal. It’s a fiery mosaic of minced meat, toasted rice powder, and a vibrant bouquet of herbs that explodes in your mouth. You get the crunch, the heat, the citrusy tang—it’s a perfect, beautiful mess. It’s the kind of dish that whispers, "Welcome to Laos." Probably best avoided by those who find black pepper "toooo spicy". And the papaya salad? Get Lao spicy. Phet phet. It's a gut-punch of flavour, sour and funky and fiery all at once. It's the kind of dish that makes you question your life choices while simultaneously making you grateful for them. It’s the culinary equivalent of getting punched in the face by a stranger who then hands you a cold Beerlao. For three years, ten times, maybe more, this place has delivered. Consistently. Reliably. So when I see those one-star reviews from some pale, self-proclaimed "foodie" complaining about getting food poisoning from their sad, beige eggs Benedict, I wonder: what the hell are you even doing in Vang Vieng? You came all this way to eat breakfast from a suburban American diner? Go home. Stick to chain restaurants, and leave the real food to the people who appreciate it. You don't deserve this.

This was our go to spot for consistency. The food and Smoothies were yummy. Reasonable prices. Never was a disappointment. I'm really picky when it comes to returning. Their Lao sausage was always fresh and delicious. The staffs speaks little english so, please be patience and use pictures and hand gestures when ordering. Best of all, view of the mountains are spectacular!

Happy Mango Thai Restaurants in Vang Vieng offers a delightful dining experience with its fantastic Pad Thai and Mango Sticky Rice. The region may not have its own culinary specialties, but there are numerous restaurants serving Western cuisine to cater to tourists. Additionally, Vang Vieng Organic Farm also provides excellent food options and a peaceful atmosphere for visitors to enjoy.
Food was great, we came here twice whilst in Vang Vieng. The spring rolls were always fresh and the duck wrap is delicious. The staff were very friendly and attentive even though they speak very little English, they couldn’t do enough for you. Gets busier in the evenings but can’t imagine you have to wait long for a table.

Food was delicious, the duck spring rolls are so tasty so I’d highly recommend! Staff are super attentive. The wait for the food was a little longer than usual but it was busy so we didn’t mind at all and this can’t be helped with a full restaurant. We were so stuffed we couldn’t fit in mango sticky rice but we’ll definitely be back to try it! We arrived around 6:45pm and got a seat but as we left there was queues😊

Wow this was the best meal I had in Laos after backpacking for a few weeks. My partner and I rocked up around 5 and had a short 10 min wait. The place is in a pretty popular part of town so it’s to be expected. We were sat out the front and unfortunately the place is across the street from a hostel. There was a drunk British guy that came and was basically harassing everyone out the front but I can’t really blame the restaurant for that. He eventually left after some friends took him back to the hostel. The meal was amazing. The service was alright. The place was standing room only and there were only two people working tables but they were running between people taking orders. The place is very popular. We ordered the duck rolls, masaman curry, beef in oyster sauce, and mango sticky rice for dessert. All of these dishes were amazing but I have to recommend the duck rolls. There was something about them that stood out and they were gone so quickly. The other dishes were good and recommend swapping the regular rice for coconut rice, well worth the 10k up charge.

Food was delicious, pretty affordable and the staff were so nice. All of the staff were extremely attentive (sometimes maybe even too attentive 🤣), they would make sure our drinks were topped right up at all times! Had a lovely meal here on our first night in Vang Vieng.

Amazing restaurant, if you are in Vang Vieng we really recommend you go to this restaurant. The food is great, the staff are really friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere is great. We came back here a few times when staying here, and had a good experience every time. We recommend getting here early or you will probably have to queue for a table, as it is very popular.

Very good food! Not the best Pad Thai we’ve had in Laos, but definitely the best in Vang Vieng. The spring rolls, on the other hand, were absolutely amazing! The atmosphere is also really nice. We had to wait about 15 minutes for a table around 6 PM.

Great food, we had several dishes and all really good! My partner and I went around 8pm and was a full restaurant. Unfortunately all other tourists and didn’t seem to be any locals. The mango sticky rice was incredible and definitely worth getting! Service was good despite being a full restaurant. Would recommend to anyone visiting!

Had green curry with chicken and mango sticky rice. Both were very tasty and fulfilling. Even if the prices are higher than in nearby restaurants their portions are large and the quality is good.
