The Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site is truly a unique place to visit. It is calm, clean, and beautifully maintained, offering wide open spaces perfect for walking or jogging. The mix of industrial history and modern culture makes it both inspiring and relaxing. Whether you want to enjoy peaceful strolls, explore its fascinating architecture, or simply unwind in a serene atmosphere, Zollverein is a must-see destination that combines heritage with tranquility.
Enormous industrial complex that was changed into a free tourist zone. There are some events organized here, they were even getting ready for one, when I was there, so you would assume that's a perfect example of revitalization effort. Unfortunately that's not entirely true. Yes instead of a toxic plant there is a museum and a forest, however that is also all that's here. Some of the equipment was left under the sun on its own, getting rusty and overgrown, making it look quite sad. Most of the buildings are closed down and the guided tour shows just a fraction of them. There is also no possibility to go underground inside the coal mine, to explore its history. Thinking it was the biggest one is quite a shame. Overall even though the complex makes an amazing first expression the longer you walk through it the sadder it gets. Wasted potential...
My visit to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex was an absolutely magnificent experience. It is truly awe-inspiring to see how this former industrial behemoth has been masterfully repurposed into a vibrant cultural landscape, housing museums, exhibition centers, a university, and more. The vision required to preserve such a monumental piece of history while breathing new life into it is simply remarkable. The sprawling 100-hectare site has been ingeniously transformed into a verdant park, with fantastic cycling and walking paths weaving through the imposing structures. This unique blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty means you can have a wonderful visit just enjoying the park, even if history isn't your main interest. Zollverein truly offers a full day of exploration and enjoyment for the entire family. With delightful cafes, excellent restaurants, and even a casino on the grounds, it's impossible to feel a moment of boredom. I was unfortunately pressed for time and could only spend three hours there, which was barely enough to scratch the surface. I am already planning my next trip to fully immerse myself in everything this incredible place has to offer. A Special Tip: To truly grasp the immense scale of the complex, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring it by bike or taking one of the guided cart tours. It's an experience that is absolutely worth it!
So pleasantly surprised by this place, it is insta worth it on its own but don’t miss out on the Ruhr museum, worth getting the full ticket to see the special exhibits. Humongous place to see not only the story is the mines but the area, its people and work. Could easily spend there several hours and still not see everything. Pair with Red Dot design museum in the same complex!
Parking is free, and information offices offer maps of this former industrial area, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The map shows the locations of the various exhibitions and indicates a circular route that takes about an hour and a half to walk at a slow pace. On Sundays when I was there, tourist trains run in the site and there are also guided tours. The ticket offices display the prices of the different tickets. I paid €10 for the Ruhr Museum and the Portal der Industriekultur, which has a panoramic terrace. This coal mine, began operating in 1932. Together with the processing plant, it occupied an area of about 100 hectares. It closed in 1986 and began its transformation into a cultural center in 1990.
A beautiful place. A huge mine listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The area around the mine is vast and green, and there's even a small playground for children. There's ample parking for cars. There's a small café on the grounds where you can enjoy a coffee or snack while waiting to enter the mine. Prices are reasonable. I recommend visiting this architectural wonder.
Surprisingly wonderful repurposing of an industrial site as a cultural centre. The juxtaposition of the buildings and metalwork with reclaiming nature is striking, and we could have easily have spent hours more wandering around than we had the time for during our visit. Easy to dismiss at a glance on the internt but remarkably affecting in person. Very glad we stopped to see it.
This made for a fascinating few hours. It's all quiet now but you can imagine the noise, heat and dust when it was operating. It has been very skilfully transformed into a coal museum and there is a large area to wander around by the coking plant.

⭐To avoid being shut out after driving over, or like us, after a long transit and much walking, check the kalendar on Villa Hügel’s own website. 🍉Click into the individual dates. The opening hours are quite irregular. ⭐Wear comfortable shoes. Much walking and much standing around to read the history on the wall made my legs leaden. In a rewarding way, sure. But very much exhausted:-) ⭐No sit-down indoor cafe on the premise. Just an outdoor food trailer. This made our visit even more physically challenging. I would’ve been okay with the trailer food and sitting outside on a bench to eat. But neither trailor food nor sitting in the chill wind was my mother-in-law’s idea of relaxation. So we stayed as long as we physically could and left for bio fuel. ⭐The place is stunning. The opulence starts only when you step in. The exterior is quite pared down. Geometry, woodwork and visual illusions make the spaces interesting. The usual symbolism of western civilizations is everywhere. ⭐Appreciation of the historic value of architectural and textual archive is not endorsement of everything the Krupp family did. Just so we are clear.
Villa Hügel is an impressive testament to German engineering. The architecture and historical significance as the Krupp family residence are fascinating. A must-visit for anyone interested in technology and history!
A stunning and peaceful place filled with history. Once home to the Krupp family, Villa Hügel impresses with its elegant architecture, grand halls, and beautiful parkland. The exhibitions are well curated and give a deep insight into Germany’s industrial past. A must-visit if you're in the Ruhr area! Amazing place
I would give it a lower rating because there are no explanations in English in the museum, just a small leaflet at the entrance. You also have an app with AR, but only in German, but luckily, I got information beforehand on the internet and I use technology so I can get by, but as a museum, at least add explanations in English for tourists? This is a problem with many German museums. Anyway, the residence and the museum itself are magnificent. The staff is friendly, the park is beautiful. I also watched the TV series about the Krupps, so it was nice to see this in live. A truly magical place. I love history and historical sites and enjoy exploring them around Germany, but many institutions don't seem to care about tourists.
It was nice to visit the residence of this old timey Jeffrey Bezos, the villa and the garden are beautiful. English translations were missing in the exhibitions and most staff were rude - a number of times they shouted at me or my son in German. You can’t get anything to eat except for fries (nice but not fresh) and bratwurst that was very low quality.
This is one of the amazing places in Essen to visit. A beautiful historical building featuring rich pieces of history. The architecture and design are quite unique and breathtaking, making it very worthwhile to spend as much time going to the many various rooms and seeing artwork, classic furniture and many more. The park around the villa is also quite amazing to walk around and take a nice relaxing stroll. There is an entrance fee to the villa but it is very affordable and I would recommend a visit to this historical house. The place is on the other side of the S-Bahn station of Essen-Hügel, and there are signs to get to the villa, so you can’t really miss this fantastic sight.
An amazing home to visit and look around. The grounds around the home are stunning!!
Großeshaus was closed. I only visited the Kleineshaus which is the museum. Museum has only German subtitles which was dissappointing. Museum has 2 floors and the inside is all about the Krupp Family and how they grew their business, their effects on war, their products etc. There is a big garden where you can walk around and enjoy the clean air. The Villa is close to the Baldeneysee and the Hügel Station.

I watched the show Surprise. I'm a foreigner and I don't understand German that well. I have been to different theatres including Broadways but this is the only one that made my every second so entertained.
It’s my first time to visit from other branch of GOP same as my colleagues. We are so glad that we get the warm welcome from the staff with professional and hospitality. And lastly thanks to our great server Parwiz ☺️. Thank you GOP Essen Team for the care and professional service. We will sure come back 🌸🌸🌸 ( Visited Oct. 15,2025)
Some friends from Essen took us here in 2014 and we come back 2 or 3 times a year its just so much a great night out entertainment is amazing we go home with sore sides from laughing and contented tummies from the great food
We thoroughly enjoyed dinner and amazing show at our company Christmas function
Every show has it's own personality, every time we are there it feels like first time, waiters are also kind and fast. Five stars.
Me and my daughter love this place. We came for show and we are never disappointed.
A nice atmosphere to unwind and to watch artistic people on stage. We enjoyed and laughed a lot.
Very nice show. Picture some cirque de soleil meets offbeat Swiss comedy during the intermissions.

A well maintained and beautiful public museum. Apart from the permanent exhibition, there was also "Frau in blau" temporary exhibition. The highlight is Van Gogh's paintings kept in the permanent exhibition.
Enjoyable experience of modern art (the 1860s to the 1970s) with informative notes. Includes Dali, Magritte, Van Gogh among many others. I particularly liked various installations. A leisurely stroll through the exhibits took me about two hours, but I can imagine spending more time in this museum, especially because the photo collection was closed at the time of my visit. The main collection is open for free. There is a café-restaurant on the terrace next to the museum. The museum shop has gifts and a lot, a whole library worth of art books. There is also an actual library (reading room) to sit and study art books.
Te permanent exhibition is free. You can find art from Andy Warhol, Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, Renoir, Mondrian, etc. And many contemporary artwork. If you want to visit the temporary expositions. You can buy your ticket in the entrance :) Also, the museum shop has interesting stuff to see or buy 🤩
I love this place. The William Kentridge exhibition was exceptional, but the collections hold some gems too (Matisse, Gauguin, Nam Yune Paik, Rodin, Mondriaan) and well curated. We came with our 6 year old who’s not very interrested in art and still spent 3 hours! The museum shop has a great book selection.
Architecturally the building is amazing. The permanente collection is overall pretty good, has quite a few contemporary masters and some interesting minors particularly from the Neue Sachlichkeit and I did not pay. But really need a curatorial overhaul, thematic rooms are maybe good for kids, not for a thinking adult. In particular if the themes are so abstract and the paintings do not speak with each other. Also you can’t put Braque and Picasso right beside a festival poster. I found very interesting & cool the scoring system for paintings’ provenance during WWII, to rank how clear or murky their history was. I wish the same would be done for the “exotic” pieces they have but I guess we would see a lot of red dots. The staff were incredibly friendly and the temporary exhibition was interesting and well curated.
Very nice museum. Free to visit except for the temporary exhibitions.
Their permanent collection is pretty amazing. You can see some artwork from Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali and many more. It’s free entry except the temporary exhibitions.
A great museum with a great collection of modern and contemporary art. Architecture of the building is also amazing. You would need 2-3h for a proper visit.

One of best shopping mall in the city, with food court, number of parking places available and good connectivity with public transport as well.
Lots and lots of shops, but the elevators are a nightmare! If you want to go down or up a floor you tend to get stuck going in the opposite direction, even if you clicked first! Not ok! Furthermore there is almost no option to eat halal or vegetarian, that is too bad.
It's a bit pricey, but it's in a great spot, and they have all sorts of food. The prices are a little crazy, but it's still okay, you know? Loads of people come here just to eat and window shop.
Great shopping center to visit when in Essen City . Very well located and not that expensive if you’re looking to do some shopping . The restaurants were also amazing and it was well maintained, cleaned , n security was very helpful when we left a bag behind .
Beautifully decorated for Christmas every year. One place to shop for several things all at the same time. Also has good connectivity to other parts of the city by Underground directly inside the mall.
A very big mall at the absolute city center Parking 1 hour 1 euro You can easily you park and enjoy the mall then enjoy the city center with so many shops around The play area for kids is absolutely small, only a square with some minor games for toddlers and another with some arcade games Not really a good place for kids to have fun There are many restaurants inside And many restaurants outside, especially the arabic restaurant Almidan aldimashqi
Good shopping complex with lot of branded shops. Nice place to hang with family and friends. Lot of Restaurant for food as well. Great location , just near the BERLINER PLATZ U BAHN station. Always crowded during weekends. In weekdays normally crowded after lunchtime. There are grocery shop as well like rewe. Saturn is there for electronics goods . Macd , subways are there to eat . Overall a perfect place to spend your day with your family and friends.
Beautiful decorations with Christmas trees all around the mall. Everyone is shopping 🛍️ as there are Black Friday discounts are available in almost all shops. Festival season 😍

Slide 1 of 8
The Red Dot Design Museum is a fantastic spot for design lovers! The exhibits showcase award-winning products and innovative concepts from all over the world, from clever everyday items to visionary designs. The museum’s industrial-chic setting complements the modern displays and adds to the experience. I’d recommend giving yourself about 2 hours to really take it all in—you’ll want to explore each piece. One thing that could be improved is the signage; it was a bit hard to find the entrance, so clearer directions would help. Also, while the museum shop is decent, it didn’t quite live up to the creativity of the exhibits—could be a bit more exciting. Overall, though, the Red Dot Design Museum is a unique and inspiring visit for anyone curious about the world of design
The Red Dot Design Museum in Essen is a hidden gem, especially if you love design, creativity, or just seeing cool stuff. It’s located in a former coal mine, which gives it this incredible mix of industrial history and cutting-edge innovation—a great setting for showcasing award-winning designs. From Apple and Nintendo’s evolution to kitchen gadgets you never think twice about, the museum makes you realize how much thought goes into everyday objects. The best part? You can actually touch and test out many of the exhibits! I had way too much fun spinning in a designer chair and checking out futuristic furniture. What I was missing was a bit more explanation added to the displays or maybe one sentence fun facts on why this design is special - sometimes it was difficult to know without googling what I was looking up or why should I care. Oh, and if you’re on a budget—Fridays are “Pay As Much As You Want” days! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
I will start by saying that the Red Dot museum IS worth visiting. However….some feedback and notes for fellow visitors. Though there are some cool state of the art or certainly interesting items, I’m sorry but a “control system” or “car part” does not engage (key word of the day…) or inform me what in Earth it is for, good for them for earning a “design award”. A few videos are more helpful but besides being able to touch some things and sit on some chairs, for things to either be functional or actually explained! Also, for some of the items that can be “tried”, it’d actually be nice to be able to leave feedback on their design or functionality because I’d certainly never buy a modern Chinese fridge that’s impossible to open. Maybe some things are already out for sale in Beijing or Finland but a lot does not leave a wow impression from having plainly seen it at the museum. The cashier is friendly and knowledgeable, and I’m not saying the museum has to sell its soul to the corporations making these products, the wow factor should be the premises of finding out what innovation is
Design heaven inside a former powerhouse! The Red Dot Design Museum blends cutting-edge modern design with the raw industrial charm of the Zollverein Coal Mine Complex. Every corner showcases innovative products, from everyday gadgets to futuristic concepts, all winners of the prestigious Red Dot Award. The building itself is a work of art — a perfect backdrop for creativity. Whether you’re a design professional or just curious, it’s an inspiring, hands-on experience you won’t forget.
It was very nice and exciting experience to see and learn about the roll and function of design in different industries. Definitely recommend it
Awesome awesome awesome. Loved this place, and some super cool items on display. Definite must visit.
That's fantastic place for everyone who is interested in art, design and industrial architecture. I've visited it multiple times and will definitely visit again. Surrounding area is quite vast so prepare yourself for long walk if you want to explore entire complex.
It's fun.... But I also found myself asking, (as a designer), "why did [this] win a design award?". As many of the products did not take into account usability at all. Washing machines that hurt my hands to open (and would be near impossible for those with large hands), designs that were unintuitive to figure out. It seemed more like awards for aesthetic beauty-- rather than innovative, functional or overall good designs (which I expected).

Unique quite snd nice town
I visited this charming little old town on a Sunday, and it was a lovely and peaceful experience. Since it was the weekend, most shops were closed and there weren’t many people around, which made it even more relaxing. You can enjoy a coffee, a drink, or a glass of wine at one of the cafés, and there are a few places to grab a bite as well. One of the highlights was taking a walk along the beautiful river—such a calm and scenic spot. I also noticed that there are boat cruises available, where you can enjoy a drink while sailing, probably as part of a guided tour. Additionally, you can rent canoes and pedal boats, which is a great way to explore the river from a different perspective. Definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for a quiet and picturesque place with a touch of adventure!
🏙 🏙 If you stay anywhere in Nordrhein-Westfalen, I should say this place is worth a visit. Beautiful place to spend a day without getting bored in this Old Town 🏙🏙
Beautiful old city center . Nice and quite . Good to walk around and take some great pictures .
They call Altstadt the longest bar for a reason, if you wish to know why? I suggest visit Altstadt on weekends. 😜😜😜
Amazing, get the beer Safari guide. It’s hard to get 100% Eng, but our guide did a good job of giving quick English summaries.

Exhibitions on local history, culture & nature over 4 floors of a regenerated coal-washing plant.
Slide 1 of 8
Very well maintained museum with diverse expositions on many topics enriched with sound effects, good light design and overall feeling. Those keen on visiting such places definitely need to make a visit.
Let me start that's not a bad museum, the amount and quality of stuff, especially the geological is top notch. It's just not what you would expect from something located in a UNESCO site in a coal washing plant. Especially since, when you enter one of the longest escalators you will see in your life and arrive at the entrance level you are greeted with some cool looking industrial stuff. You feel like you actually went back in time and entered the factory, then there are stairs, that are mysteriously glowing in an orange color. All of that bursts like a bubble when you enter the permanent exhibition which is using almost nothing of the the place itself or the industry that was located here. Of course there is a whole floor dedicated to the Ruhr region history nowadays, and at the bottom when there are the history sections where you can see some environment damages and machinery that was used in old times. It's all about the Rurh region, but why not use this whole UNESCO complex you have here? Use the transmission belts to travel between the buildings and the exhibits. It's not like you would have to build them, they are there, you can even see them through the glass doors. Show some coal mining and coke production, not with a movie, hidden somewhere in a corner, but with lights, moving objects and sounds... something that would keep the feeling you have at the entrance. There are guided tours that show a bit more, however unless you are interested in the history that you could read on your own, there is little to see on those. I am actually mad at the wasted potential of this place. It could've been something that's one of a kind in the world, with this preserved site and what you get is a good museum for a middle school trip.
I spent seven hours browsing the site and the museums, and even then there were more things to see! The main museum has three floors of various expositions, from the ancient history of this region to the modern times, plus industrial artifacts, paintings, books, and more. There is an observatory platform to see the area from above. There are several tours in German and English. The English tour took us to the coal plant where we learned a lot about the mining operations of the past. I recommend coming as soon as they open (10:00 at present) to easily get tickets for any areas that require them (several areas are free). You can easily spend the whole day there! The museum has elevators to make it accessible. However, for the plant tour make sure to ask, because our route involved many stairs. There is a café, book & souvenir shop, and plenty of restrooms in the museum building. I highly recommend! Don't think about it as "just a coal mine" - this is a phenomenal museum of natural history, industrial history, and stories of the people of Rhine-Ruhr over the years. Plus, the territory of Zollverein has many other activities to explore.
The Ruhr’s entire story under one roof! Located in the iconic Zollverein Coal Mine Complex, the Ruhr Museum takes you on a journey from the region’s geological origins to its industrial boom and cultural transformation. The exhibits are beautifully curated, mixing fossils, minerals, historical artifacts, and powerful photography. The industrial setting adds atmosphere — riding the massive orange escalator to the entrance is an experience in itself. A must for anyone wanting to understand the Ruhr’s soul.
Stumbled upon this unique location before heading home. We walked around and did a tour on our own. We made some cute photos in the booth and made a souvenir coin. Always nice to learn some history.
A very good museum! It's actually huge, and tells stories not only about the site itself and the industrialization of the Ruhr area, but about geology, history and geography as well. Plan several hours for the visit.
The Ruhr Museum is really an amazing place. It is located in a building of an old coal mine, and a lot of the original equipment was kept there, which creates very interesting atmosphere. The exhibitions are very diverse. There is a history of the region, the history of Germany itself, as well as archaeology and nature. The exhibition doesn't become boring because it keeps switching your attention from one aspect to another. They also didn’t forget about coal. There are many different types of coal presented. I didn’t even know there are so many types of it! Overall, it is a great museum and highly recommended to visit.
Very good museum, definitely worth checking out the guided tour. But if you visit here definitely also check out the Red Dot Design Museum!

Our yearly venue for boardgames, Essen Spiel 1000+ exhibitors, 1368 new games this year (2025). Try to test all of those in 4 days.
Beautiful place to see the plants and all the stuff there. But I must complain about the 5.60€ 0.5 l Coca-Cola bottle, which is outrageous and very disrespectful
I can only give the messe a 2☆ rating unfortunately. Though it is a large venue that is otherwise perfectly fine once you are inside, describing the parking experience as "abysmal " is too kindly a word. There should be way clearer signs indicating where parking spots are available and how many are still free.
Thanks for sponsoring the World University Games. Great venue
Thank god there is no fire accident this week, because it would have killed or injured many visitors. The car park is a disaster with cars waiting over 3 hours (!!!!!!) standing idle while steaming gas fumes the whole time. They should seriously investigate how badly and dangerously parking is organized at the messe and fine the organization.
Great convention hall perfect for Spiel. Staff not very good at handling entrance was such in queue in the rain after opening whilst letting people from a different direction straight in. In addition very slow at admittance so we missed a sign up despite being there 30 minutes early
I visit messe every year in Oktober for Spiel. The halls are all just fine. But what makes me only give this place 2 stars is declining cleanliness of the toilets and the lines at the wardrobe. The paper is almost always finished. The lines for the toilet reach the full length of the hall. Messe should invest in more toilets. Because this is ridiculous. Then the wardrobe. They only employed 2 people here which was definitely not enough for the amount of people that wanted to leave at the end of the day. These poor people were running all day trying to get coats for a more and more angry crowd. This was absolutely unacceptable. Not only for the people working for you as for the people waiting for an hour to just leave the building.
Really large, generally okay lighting depending on location in the event center and event...

Paid a visit to this modern yet cozy concert hall to enjoy the “American Classics”. A great performance and experience.
Quick service, nice venue, but we felt that the acoustic situation wasn't ideal for a jazz band. Felt a bit distant and not precise. We had a good night regardless!
Great place to listen to the orchestra, forget about everything and just be.
Good sound. In the summer always good program. Worth to drive 200km 🤣
Visited concert halls in Bochum Mulheim and Essen during the Rhur piano festival and the one in Essen is my least favorite, especially considering Essen is the biggest city among them all. Seats are incredibly narrow, definitely not enough (at all) instructions for where the seats are both outside and inside the hall, at least for non-German speaker. The park where the philharmonie is at is cute for anyone who wants a morning walk.
Very beautiful place, friendly staff and great performers. Thanks for a good time.
A wonderful concert hall with good acoustics and comfy chairs. I was in one of the last rows and I could both see and hear the performers very well.
The show was good but the sound from the balcony was too mushy, the eq felt like a V (in a bad way)

Built in 1913, the city's first synagogue explores Jewish history & culture via exhibits & events.

The Alte Synagogue in Essen is a beautifully preserved historic site with deep cultural and religious significance. The entry is totally free. The architecture is stunning, and the exhibitions offer insightful information about Jewish history in the region. The building’s peaceful atmosphere makes it a moving place for reflection. The staff is very polite and friendly. If you have large bags, you’ll need to deposit them in self-service lockers using a 1 euro coin, which is refundable when you return it. A must-visit for anyone interested in history or cultural heritage !
Wonderful synagogue. Admission and audio guide are free. Staff were very helpful and friendly. I spent a pleasant morning here learning about all aspects of this place of worship.
Really interesting and free to visit
2022.4.29 It was on my way to downtown. According to wiki, it "is one of the largest, best preserved and architecturally most impressive testimonies to Jewish culture in pre-war Germany." In 1913, it was the new synagogue. There was a police car parked near by.
It's a beautiful Old Synagoge with an awesome history... A guided tour is recommended.. The guide explains each and every details.. and it's awesome...
#Essen #JewishCulture #Museum Surprisingly this museum is a must if you want to learn more about Jewish culture, not only focused in Essen, but all around the world. Free entrance, audioguide available, lockers for clothes.
It was very interesting for me as I was not familiar with Jewish beliefs before. The synagoge is gorgeous and you are free to explore all floors (for free) and stay as long as you like. There are also exibitions on each floor. I would highly recommend it to everyone!
Really interesting! The museum inside is very modern done, lots of things to see and do. There is a wall with famous people that have some kind of Jewish relation, and you are able to see and learn some traditional Jewish dances. This was really fun to do.

Church of a former 9th-century monastery popular for its old art, including a golden Madonna statue.

The most beautiful church I ever seen. What really impacted me was the krypta. What a magic place I went down 4 times just to look at the serenity of this place. Wish I had a chance to enter and meditate there. The surroundings were peaceful and clean I just love it
Top and perhaps the only place to see in central Essen. Golden Madonna is magnificent. There are few more pieces of art surviving. Otherwise, the cathedral is quite empty- I guess due to the bombing campaign during Second World War.
Essen's silent guardian: the Essener Dom, echoing tales from the 9th century. In the heart of Essen, where history and faith intertwine, Essener Dom
2022.4.29 Essener Münster / Essen Cathedral / Essener Dom is a Roman catholic church, sits right in the crowded downtown.
Damaged in WWII but rebuilt this is a lovely church with a historic Romanesque west end resembling Aachen, with a gothic nave and apse. It has the famous Romanesque golden Madonna (behind grates and glass) and an equally old giant candle holder. The old crypt was closed whenever we visited. There are many interesting modern features too, I particularly loved the Buschulte (I think) stained glass in the nave and choir. Guessing late 1950s into the 1960s? Outside there are modern bronze doors, also very interesting - look out for poor John the Baptist's head and Salome. A nice quiet cloister on one side and large square on the other with wonderful plaited trees and a nice fountain. Also a modern statue of Alfrid, the founder. No tickets needed but check for when the services take place. We went for a lent musical meditation which included baroque organ music as well as some liturgical elements.
Beautiful interior, be sure to view both the small chapel and the main cathedral and go down the stairs to see the crypt
Wonderful old catholic churck

(Translated by Google) Listen to the hour and enjoy the sound. See how the single bell sang. Once hidden from bombs and war. It's nice that it survived. The clock turns constantly and steadily. I wish it would stand forever. Time always runs in circles. Look, and you'll see the proof. Our Essen carillon – something we really like to show non-Esseners. Why? Because it's Essen's cultural heritage and therefore belongs to us, just like the other great works of art that are publicly visible. We rarely look at them these days. It's also one of my favorite PokeStops, as I can then send them as gifts to everyone. So a piece of Essen for everyone.

Wonderfully designed theater with top quality performance. We have enjoyed 3 ballets at this theater and they have been excellent productions. The theater offers comfortable seating with good views from any spot. On top of all the perks of a lovely theater it's actually affordable, including the convenient underground parking garage. I highly recommend seeing a performance here!
Unacceptable Treatment at Aalto-Theater in Essen My recent experience at the Aalto Theater in Essen was deeply disappointing and frankly, quite shocking. As professional musicians visiting from out of town, we simply wanted to inquire about the program and upcoming shows. We were dressed as typical tourists, in comfortable clothes suitable for exploring the city – not that our attire should ever warrant the treatment we received. Before we could even properly articulate our request, a staff member rudely interrupted us, immediately demanding to see tickets and attempting to usher us out. Despite our repeated attempts to explain that we were not there for a show but merely seeking information, she continued to be dismissive and aggressive. It felt as though we were being judged solely on our appearance, which is utterly unprofessional and unwelcoming for any establishment, let alone a cultural venue. This kind of behavior from front-of-house staff is simply unacceptable. The people who are the face of a theater should embody politeness, respect, and a helpful attitude. This encounter left such a sour taste that we will not be considering this venue for future bookings or recommendations. If theaters wish to remain vibrant and attract a diverse audience, they must ensure their staff understand the importance of basic courtesy and professionalism. The majority of the audience seemed to be over 50, and I can't imagine this kind of unwelcoming atmosphere will encourage repeat visits from anyone.
Saw a production of "Die Zauberfloete".The production was great.Excellent artists and beautiful costumes made for a great evening .The theatre is great Seats are spaced in such away that there is ample room for legs. The wardrobe takes care of coats without fee.
We’re from Bangkok Thailand
It's a cozy and wonderful child friendly venue with highly professional staff.
A.very nice building, a good hall, everything ok. A bit too pure, not charming.
