Art Museums
Museum Folkwang, located in Essen, is a renowned cultural institution that boasts an extensive collection of European art from the 19th and 20th centuries. Originally founded in Hagen in 1902, the museum moved to Essen in 1921 and has since expanded its collection to include masterpieces by prominent artists such as Van Gogh, Monet, Kandinsky, and Klee.
A well maintained and beautiful public museum. Apart from the permanent exhibition, there was also "Frau in blau" temporary exhibition. The highlight is Van Gogh's paintings kept in the permanent exhibition.
Prathmesh W — Google review
Enjoyable experience of modern art (the 1860s to the 1970s) with informative notes. Includes Dali, Magritte, Van Gogh among many others. I particularly liked various installations. A leisurely stroll through the exhibits took me about two hours, but I can imagine spending more time in this museum, especially because the photo collection was closed at the time of my visit. The main collection is open for free. There is a café-restaurant on the terrace next to the museum. The museum shop has gifts and a lot, a whole library worth of art books. There is also an actual library (reading room) to sit and study art books.
Natalia P — Google review
Te permanent exhibition is free. You can find art from Andy Warhol, Monet, Van Gogh, Degas, Renoir, Mondrian, etc. And many contemporary artwork. If you want to visit the temporary expositions. You can buy your ticket in the entrance :) Also, the museum shop has interesting stuff to see or buy 🤩
Gicela C — Google review
The Folkwang museum has an exciting architecture, continuously combining interior and exterior, deliberately presenting the exhibition halls as a maze, interjecting reading and rest areas, enticing one to just wander around and discover. Great collection of German Expressionists. I came to Essen especially to see this museum and stayed for 2 days, it is that good! And the direction decided to keep entrance free, as a gift to art lovers.
Francis U — Google review
Architecturally the building is amazing. The permanente collection is overall pretty good, has quite a few contemporary masters and some interesting minors particularly from the Neue Sachlichkeit and I did not pay. But really need a curatorial overhaul, thematic rooms are maybe good for kids, not for a thinking adult. In particular if the themes are so abstract and the paintings do not speak with each other. Also you can’t put Braque and Picasso right beside a festival poster. I found very interesting & cool the scoring system for paintings’ provenance during WWII, to rank how clear or murky their history was. I wish the same would be done for the “exotic” pieces they have but I guess we would see a lot of red dots. The staff were incredibly friendly and the temporary exhibition was interesting and well curated.
Velantin — Google review
Very nice museum. Free to visit except for the temporary exhibitions.
Debby L — Google review
Their permanent collection is pretty amazing. You can see some artwork from Van Gogh, Picasso, Dali and many more. It’s free entry except the temporary exhibitions.

A great museum with a great collection of modern and contemporary art. Architecture of the building is also amazing. You would need 2-3h for a proper visit.

Foundation
Villa Hügel is a significant part of Essen's architectural heritage and represents the prosperous industrialization of the Ruhr region. Constructed in the late 19th century by Alfred Krupp, this opulent 269-room mansion sits on a vast 20-hectare estate overlooking the Ruhr. The Neoclassical design reflects elegance and modernity, boasting innovative features ahead of its time. Visitors can explore its ornate interiors and stroll through the expansive parkland.
⭐To avoid being shut out after driving over, or like us, after a long transit and much walking, check the kalendar on Villa Hügel’s own website. 🍉Click into the individual dates. The opening hours are quite irregular. ⭐Wear comfortable shoes. Much walking and much standing around to read the history on the wall made my legs leaden. In a rewarding way, sure. But very much exhausted:-) ⭐No sit-down indoor cafe on the premise. Just an outdoor food trailer. This made our visit even more physically challenging. I would’ve been okay with the trailer food and sitting outside on a bench to eat. But neither trailor food nor sitting in the chill wind was my mother-in-law’s idea of relaxation. So we stayed as long as we physically could and left for bio fuel. ⭐The place is stunning. The opulence starts only when you step in. The exterior is quite pared down. Geometry, woodwork and visual illusions make the spaces interesting. The usual symbolism of western civilizations is everywhere. ⭐Appreciation of the historic value of architectural and textual archive is not endorsement of everything the Krupp family did. Just so we are clear.
Handan B — Google review
Villa Hügel is an impressive testament to German engineering. The architecture and historical significance as the Krupp family residence are fascinating. A must-visit for anyone interested in technology and history!
André V — Google review
A stunning and peaceful place filled with history. Once home to the Krupp family, Villa Hügel impresses with its elegant architecture, grand halls, and beautiful parkland. The exhibitions are well curated and give a deep insight into Germany’s industrial past. A must-visit if you're in the Ruhr area! Amazing place
Armel G — Google review
I would give it a lower rating because there are no explanations in English in the museum, just a small leaflet at the entrance. You also have an app with AR, but only in German, but luckily, I got information beforehand on the internet and I use technology so I can get by, but as a museum, at least add explanations in English for tourists? This is a problem with many German museums. Anyway, the residence and the museum itself are magnificent. The staff is friendly, the park is beautiful. I also watched the TV series about the Krupps, so it was nice to see this in live. A truly magical place. I love history and historical sites and enjoy exploring them around Germany, but many institutions don't seem to care about tourists.
Sandra P — Google review
This is one of the amazing places in Essen to visit. A beautiful historical building featuring rich pieces of history. The architecture and design are quite unique and breathtaking, making it very worthwhile to spend as much time going to the many various rooms and seeing artwork, classic furniture and many more. The park around the villa is also quite amazing to walk around and take a nice relaxing stroll. There is an entrance fee to the villa but it is very affordable and I would recommend a visit to this historical house. The place is on the other side of the S-Bahn station of Essen-Hügel, and there are signs to get to the villa, so you can’t really miss this fantastic sight.
Phil T — Google review
An amazing home to visit and look around. The grounds around the home are stunning!!
Jim B — Google review
Großeshaus was closed. I only visited the Kleineshaus which is the museum. Museum has only German subtitles which was dissappointing. Museum has 2 floors and the inside is all about the Krupp Family and how they grew their business, their effects on war, their products etc. There is a big garden where you can walk around and enjoy the clean air. The Villa is close to the Baldeneysee and the Hügel Station.
Zehra N — Google review
The place is worth a visit! Entry ticket costs only 5 euros. The building is well-kept, authentic and brings you back to 19th century. Due to that visit I learned a bit more German history.

Botanical garden
Grugapark Essen is not your average city park. It's a sprawling green oasis with a variety of attractions to enjoy. The park features a petting zoo, botanical gardens, barbecue areas, an aviary, and sports facilities. Its botanical garden is the main highlight, showcasing a pyramid-shaped tropical house, an alpine garden with a waterfall, Westphalian farmers' garden, rose garden, forest valley with bonsai trees, and rhododendron garden.
Relaxing and exciting at the same time. I’d love to highlight my favorite elements and aspects. 3 elements: 1) The waterfall. You can get really up close and still be safe. A win win. 2) The Geological Wall. Rock strata, coal mines, seams and seismic shifts. 15 meters wide and created around a century ago. Wow. Absolutely amazing and touching. 3) The Mendel flower bed of hereditary tree. Such clarity. Adorable. 3 aspects: 1) The park is dotted with humorous sculptures. 2) The park balances vast open spaces with intimate and shaded nooks. 3) The park is culturally diverse. It incorporates aesthetic ideals from around the world and different eras in time. Fans of bees, don’t miss the bee house where you can buy organic skincare products, from soaps to creams. Candles are available, too. And the cutest bee fluffies (stuffed animals)!
Handan B — Google review
A great place for picnics and sunbathing. The children can also have plenty of fun in the park. If you're a student, don't forget to ask for a discount at the counter.
Prathmesh W — Google review
Pretty views most definitely!! There is one con however that absolutely took this review from 5 to 3 starts, and thats the treatment of the birds. It is very obvious that they aren’t fed well because they’re all either sick or want no interaction with humans at all. It was such a horror scene seeing featherless birds on display. Besides that the views were wonderful and I had a nice time.
Minatullah H — Google review
This is my favorite park in the world!! It’s HUGE, beautiful, and ever changing. I look forward to going back every time I leave.

Definitely one of the best parks in Essen. There is 5 euro entry fee but the park is so big that you can spend an entire day there. Its ideal for family picnics.
Alveena M — Google review
I love this park so much. it holds little wonder . The nature here soothes the soul and body. This park consist of surprises and a good day like today was the best time for me and my family to be there, we had bunch of fun, the kids had the space to run and scream as much and on top of their voices. Everything was fine and our day was almost ending well until we discovered this part of the park where the birds are, precisely the huge enclosed place for he flamingoes and the other birds. This place really attracted us all, so we rushed in and my niece who had a ball in her hand mistakenly dropped the ball and it rolled in the pond, which i quickly dashed to fetch it immediately. In about 1 min after this, an older man who was dressed in a duty uniform who i guessed worked there and actually confirmed he works there approached us in front of these kids warned us in a hash manner while visitors stood and watched in silence. I mean, i rushed for this ball and quickly dropped it in our wagon(wagen in deutsch) so the kids don’t throw it back in the pond. But this man had the gut to be disrespectful and inconsiderate. He even dared to tell us if it happens again he would have to walk us out of the place. So i told him if he really noticed, i reached to get the ball that quick so where was the problem and why the need for all that warnings and unfriendliness. My sister was very sad and angry because after this tensed moment beside us stood a family I will guess were pure natives(Germans) with their son also standing close to the water the little boy was even at some point dipping his feet in the water, this man went to them played jokingly with their little son and smiled laughed with this family. He left us feeling not accepted. I took my family immediately out, then i went back in there to confront this man again, and when i got there he was sitting with another older woman also in the same uniform. So i told this man what he did back there was a no go and he could have approached us the right way. Maybe he could have even also jokingly tell my niece why it won’t be good idea to let the ball in the water. I mean she is even a kid for god sake, I would not say he treated us because of our skin color but that’s how it looked like. Out of almost 40 people visiting, it was only one visitor who came to my defense. He said he witnessed everything and also told this older guy he was wrong. I felt a bit relieved and left the place. I am disappointed! We are all humans why can’t we be genuinely humans? I will post pictures of this unforgettable moment. I still rate Grugapark but train your workers to be diversity inclusive. I won’t pay money for anything to just mess with my day again never. (17.08.2025 at 16: 52 )

This is a fantastic, spacious park for families. There's so much to do for an entire day—not just walking, but plenty of activities for both kids and adults. Be sure to bring cash, as they don't accept debit cards, despite some entrance gates reportedly accepting card payments.

Such a big and beautiful park! I was impressed by the amount of activities you can do there, all of the courts, children playgrounds, barbecue spots, flowers areas! There’s so many things to see and explore:) There’s an animal park and it’s free but it’s available from 10-17 if I remember correctly, you can feed them:) and there’s a swimming pool area, but you have to pay additional fees. We bought year ticket and it’s about thirty euros, but normal entry costs five euro per adult and three per student. There also some little cafeterias and toilets for free:)

Specialty Museums
The Red Dot Design Museum, located in a building redesigned by Norman Foster, showcases the finest contemporary product designs from around the world. Situated within the Zollverein Complex, it celebrates industrial design breakthroughs and houses over 1,000 products that have received the prestigious Red Dot Design Award. The museum is dedicated to excellence in design, functionality, and innovation. It has been recognized as one of the top design museums globally and features everyday items that have become iconic due to their exemplary designs.
The Red Dot Design Museum is a fantastic spot for design lovers! The exhibits showcase award-winning products and innovative concepts from all over the world, from clever everyday items to visionary designs. The museum’s industrial-chic setting complements the modern displays and adds to the experience. I’d recommend giving yourself about 2 hours to really take it all in—you’ll want to explore each piece. One thing that could be improved is the signage; it was a bit hard to find the entrance, so clearer directions would help. Also, while the museum shop is decent, it didn’t quite live up to the creativity of the exhibits—could be a bit more exciting. Overall, though, the Red Dot Design Museum is a unique and inspiring visit for anyone curious about the world of design
Charlotte B — Google review
The Red Dot Design Museum in Essen is a hidden gem, especially if you love design, creativity, or just seeing cool stuff. It’s located in a former coal mine, which gives it this incredible mix of industrial history and cutting-edge innovation—a great setting for showcasing award-winning designs. From Apple and Nintendo’s evolution to kitchen gadgets you never think twice about, the museum makes you realize how much thought goes into everyday objects. The best part? You can actually touch and test out many of the exhibits! I had way too much fun spinning in a designer chair and checking out futuristic furniture. What I was missing was a bit more explanation added to the displays or maybe one sentence fun facts on why this design is special - sometimes it was difficult to know without googling what I was looking up or why should I care. Oh, and if you’re on a budget—Fridays are “Pay As Much As You Want” days! Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.
Anja F — Google review
I will start by saying that the Red Dot museum IS worth visiting. However….some feedback and notes for fellow visitors. Though there are some cool state of the art or certainly interesting items, I’m sorry but a “control system” or “car part” does not engage (key word of the day…) or inform me what in Earth it is for, good for them for earning a “design award”. A few videos are more helpful but besides being able to touch some things and sit on some chairs, for things to either be functional or actually explained! Also, for some of the items that can be “tried”, it’d actually be nice to be able to leave feedback on their design or functionality because I’d certainly never buy a modern Chinese fridge that’s impossible to open. Maybe some things are already out for sale in Beijing or Finland but a lot does not leave a wow impression from having plainly seen it at the museum. The cashier is friendly and knowledgeable, and I’m not saying the museum has to sell its soul to the corporations making these products, the wow factor should be the premises of finding out what innovation is
Eki, : — Google review
Design heaven inside a former powerhouse! The Red Dot Design Museum blends cutting-edge modern design with the raw industrial charm of the Zollverein Coal Mine Complex. Every corner showcases innovative products, from everyday gadgets to futuristic concepts, all winners of the prestigious Red Dot Award. The building itself is a work of art — a perfect backdrop for creativity. Whether you’re a design professional or just curious, it’s an inspiring, hands-on experience you won’t forget.

Neil R — Google review
That's fantastic place for everyone who is interested in art, design and industrial architecture. I've visited it multiple times and will definitely visit again. Surrounding area is quite vast so prepare yourself for long walk if you want to explore entire complex.
Robert K — Google review
It's fun.... But I also found myself asking, (as a designer), "why did [this] win a design award?". As many of the products did not take into account usability at all. Washing machines that hurt my hands to open (and would be near impossible for those with large hands), designs that were unintuitive to figure out. It seemed more like awards for aesthetic beauty-- rather than innovative, functional or overall good designs (which I expected).

Points of Interest & Landmarks
Essen Minster, also known as Essen Cathedral, is a historic Roman Catholic church located in the Burgplatz. Originally built as an abbey in the 9th century, it is considered one of Germany's oldest cathedrals. The cathedral treasury houses a significant collection of religious artworks, including a golden Madonna statue. Managed by the cathedral chapter, the treasury chamber preserves liturgical implements and objects still used in the service of God to this day.
The most beautiful church I ever seen. What really impacted me was the krypta. What a magic place I went down 4 times just to look at the serenity of this place. Wish I had a chance to enter and meditate there. The surroundings were peaceful and clean I just love it

Top and perhaps the only place to see in central Essen. Golden Madonna is magnificent. There are few more pieces of art surviving. Otherwise, the cathedral is quite empty- I guess due to the bombing campaign during Second World War.

Damaged in WWII but rebuilt this is a lovely church with a historic Romanesque west end resembling Aachen, with a gothic nave and apse. It has the famous Romanesque golden Madonna (behind grates and glass) and an equally old giant candle holder. The old crypt was closed whenever we visited. There are many interesting modern features too, I particularly loved the Buschulte (I think) stained glass in the nave and choir. Guessing late 1950s into the 1960s? Outside there are modern bronze doors, also very interesting - look out for poor John the Baptist's head and Salome. A nice quiet cloister on one side and large square on the other with wonderful plaited trees and a nice fountain. Also a modern statue of Alfrid, the founder. No tickets needed but check for when the services take place. We went for a lent musical meditation which included baroque organ music as well as some liturgical elements.

Nestled in the heart of Essen's pedestrian zone, the Glockenspiel at Deiterhaus is a charming carillon that has been delighting visitors since 1948. Originally established by Josef Deiter as a token of gratitude to the local community, this stunning bell tower features bells dating back to 1928, which were carefully relocated from a wartime-destroyed site.
(Translated by Google) Listen to the hour and enjoy the sound. See how the single bell sang. Once hidden from bombs and war. It's nice that it survived. The clock turns constantly and steadily. I wish it would stand forever. Time always runs in circles. Look, and you'll see the proof. Our Essen carillon – something we really like to show non-Esseners. Why? Because it's Essen's cultural heritage and therefore belongs to us, just like the other great works of art that are publicly visible. We rarely look at them these days. It's also one of my favorite PokeStops, as I can then send them as gifts to everyone. So a piece of Essen for everyone.

Kettwig, located just a short drive from downtown Essen, is a charming historic district with well-preserved half-timbered homes and businesses dating back to the 1600s. The pedestrian-friendly lanes and narrow streets offer picturesque views of the Ruhr River and some of the prettiest old homes in the area. Visitors can enjoy leisurely walks along the river, visit cafes and restaurants, or take a ferry ride for a scenic experience.
Lovely experience with this town of Essen. It was so calm and peaceful surrounded by beautiful nature. And it’s worth to take the ferry ride one way which costs around 15 euro per person. It’s worth for one day trip and it’s best when it’s sunny. We really enjoyed a lot during this whole journey with this amazing view.

Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site is a significant landmark in Essen, Germany. It was once the world's largest coal mine and now stands as a preserved site with monumental buildings and a museum dating back to 1849. The area also offers diverse outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and water sports on Baldeneysee. Visitors can explore the industrial culture of the site through guided tours, museums, and cultural events held during the summer.
The Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site is truly a unique place to visit. It is calm, clean, and beautifully maintained, offering wide open spaces perfect for walking or jogging. The mix of industrial history and modern culture makes it both inspiring and relaxing. Whether you want to enjoy peaceful strolls, explore its fascinating architecture, or simply unwind in a serene atmosphere, Zollverein is a must-see destination that combines heritage with tranquility.

Enormous industrial complex that was changed into a free tourist zone. There are some events organized here, they were even getting ready for one, when I was there, so you would assume that's a perfect example of revitalization effort. Unfortunately that's not entirely true. Yes instead of a toxic plant there is a museum and a forest, however that is also all that's here. Some of the equipment was left under the sun on its own, getting rusty and overgrown, making it look quite sad. Most of the buildings are closed down and the guided tour shows just a fraction of them. There is also no possibility to go underground inside the coal mine, to explore its history. Thinking it was the biggest one is quite a shame. Overall even though the complex makes an amazing first expression the longer you walk through it the sadder it gets. Wasted potential...
Maciej P — Google review
My visit to the Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial Complex was an absolutely magnificent experience. It is truly awe-inspiring to see how this former industrial behemoth has been masterfully repurposed into a vibrant cultural landscape, housing museums, exhibition centers, a university, and more. The vision required to preserve such a monumental piece of history while breathing new life into it is simply remarkable. The sprawling 100-hectare site has been ingeniously transformed into a verdant park, with fantastic cycling and walking paths weaving through the imposing structures. This unique blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty means you can have a wonderful visit just enjoying the park, even if history isn't your main interest. Zollverein truly offers a full day of exploration and enjoyment for the entire family. With delightful cafes, excellent restaurants, and even a casino on the grounds, it's impossible to feel a moment of boredom. I was unfortunately pressed for time and could only spend three hours there, which was barely enough to scratch the surface. I am already planning my next trip to fully immerse myself in everything this incredible place has to offer. A Special Tip: To truly grasp the immense scale of the complex, I wholeheartedly recommend exploring it by bike or taking one of the guided cart tours. It's an experience that is absolutely worth it!

So pleasantly surprised by this place, it is insta worth it on its own but don’t miss out on the Ruhr museum, worth getting the full ticket to see the special exhibits. Humongous place to see not only the story is the mines but the area, its people and work. Could easily spend there several hours and still not see everything. Pair with Red Dot design museum in the same complex!

Parking is free, and information offices offer maps of this former industrial area, which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The map shows the locations of the various exhibitions and indicates a circular route that takes about an hour and a half to walk at a slow pace. On Sundays when I was there, tourist trains run in the site and there are also guided tours. The ticket offices display the prices of the different tickets. I paid €10 for the Ruhr Museum and the Portal der Industriekultur, which has a panoramic terrace. This coal mine, began operating in 1932. Together with the processing plant, it occupied an area of about 100 hectares. It closed in 1986 and began its transformation into a cultural center in 1990.

A beautiful place. A huge mine listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The area around the mine is vast and green, and there's even a small playground for children. There's ample parking for cars. There's a small café on the grounds where you can enjoy a coffee or snack while waiting to enter the mine. Prices are reasonable. I recommend visiting this architectural wonder.

Very much interesting, well maintained, engineering excellence of building mammoth escalator lifting to 24 metres height. But for a non German speaking person, a little bit confusing to navigate through different galleries at different level.

An absolutely fascinating place to visit! The Zollverein UNESCO World Heritage Site perfectly combines industrial history with impressive architecture. The guided tours are very informative, and walking through the old coal mine and coking plant really gives a sense of the past. The site is beautifully preserved, with museums, exhibitions, and even modern cultural spaces. A must-visit for history lovers and anyone interested in industrial heritage.

SEA LIFE Oberhausen is a family-friendly aquarium with over 5,000 marine creatures housed in tanks totaling two million liters of water. The main highlight is the largest shark tank in Germany, featuring black tip reef sharks and rays visible from an underwater tunnel. A new turtle exhibit opened in 2017, offering insights into different species' habitats, evolution, diet, and behavior. Located just a short drive from downtown Essen, it's a perfect stop for families or anyone interested in marine life.
A pleasant experience to do alone or with your family. The kids love it, there is an activity for them where they are given a map and have to stamp the various areas they pass through during the visit. Super clean. Lots of interaction, and assistants explain each animal area. Clean and large bathrooms. There are several areas to sit in the middle of the route. You will find a very cute shop at the end. There are also some activities at the end with virtual glasses. And there is a smoking area for those interested. All the staff were super friendly.

A really good place with a lot of aquatic life in both flora and fauna. The whole place was very well maintained and it was a good experience going through the entire setup. Fantastic place to bring kids. The staff personnel were quite helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend it.

Was genuinely excited to take our visitors (with a 6 yo child) to this place. We have been to Aqua Zoo in Düsseldorf and was really amazed. So we had high expectations here since it's an international franchise. Cons: - Price of the tickets were a bit more expensive to our liking, considering that a lot of the exhibitions were closed. No otters, no penguins, no seals. - Place could use some sprucing up. Everything felt old. Ambience was depressing, from start to finish. Good thing my niece still appreciated seeing the fish, but the adults clearly saw what was lacking. - Very crowded on a random weekend. I didn't see staff on standby inside to usher people through and engage kids. They could have compensated with the lack of exhibitions with engaged staff that actually talk to the kids. - Limited to vending machines for after snacks options. - I downloaded the app and it was very laggy. Couldn't even identify the fishes properly and were giving wrong data. Very misleading and a waste of time. - No signal throughout the exhibition. It's 2025 folks. - No locker rooms. Prams were left randomly scattered to the side of the reception. Pros: - Staff at front desk seemed to be nice. Although they were clearly exhausted already by 14:00. - They set up some Halloween decoration and were giving away some Haribo. There were stamp stations across the place, but failed in execution as some of them were already missing the stamps. - Very clean bathrooms. - They had a friendly mascot waiting at the end to take photos with. - Nice quality selection of souvenirs, but limited choices. Expensive but that is to be expected. - I heard a staff member inside talking about mussels, it's nice to also have these educational stuff around places like these. Overall, I'm not coming back. I would rather go to Aquazoo or even Krefeld Zoo to see more variety of animals.

I really liked it, especially the Animal Crossing event was fun. Generally the atmosphere was relaxing however it can be packed with people in some areas. I went there at around 4pm and a lot of kids were running around but only at the beginning. Overall it was fun and a wonderful experience.

I really enjoyed my trip here. It's definitely a great place for children but I was visiting a friend and as an adult, I had a great time! Everything is well maintained and beautifully set up. The clean and large bathrooms were a nice surprise as usually in such establishments where lots of children are involved, things can become messy quickly. It should be noted that the staff were very helpful and friendly and even spoke in English when they realised I was an English speaker. I would highly recommend a visit and do be sure to check out the cute shop at the end.
Kimberly M — Google review
We got tickets to Sea Life as part of our hotel stay package. It’s a decent sized aquarium where you walk along a fixed course to see the fish. For the kids there was an Animal Crossing stamp tour which adds a bit of extra excitement to kids running around. Some areas did tend to get crowded but at the entrance they do regulate the number of people that get in at intervals. There are some areas where you’re allowed to touch things which was a fun addition. We did see some people arrive that did not book tickets in advance who got turned around at the entrance because the day was fully booked, so be careful of that.

The museum provides a fun and educational experience, making it ideal for school trips. The outdoor area adds to the appeal of this museum, providing ample space for exploration and learning.
Very nice experience also for adults. There are areas for sound, light, physics, math and LEGO. There are many set of instruments you can play music. And outside the museum, there is also some interesting interactive infrastructure to play with, like a mini piano you can play by foot. Almost all the employees there can speak fluent English, and they are very happy to help you. The atmosphere is great, all kids are exciting. It’s really worth a visit if you are around.

The museum is really hands-on and interesting not just for the small ones but also for the adults. The staff is really friendly and helpful always ready to instruct you and educate you a bit on the experiments at hand. Really nice experience which I can only recommend to everyone. You will need at least a couple of hours to have a more or less complete overview. Yu will need longer if you are keen to read and understand all the experiments.

The Aalto Theater in Essen, Germany, is a modern opera house that often features gifted artists from around the world. It has an elegant and bold architecture that makes it one of the most popular performing arts venues in the country.
Wonderfully designed theater with top quality performance. We have enjoyed 3 ballets at this theater and they have been excellent productions. The theater offers comfortable seating with good views from any spot. On top of all the perks of a lovely theater it's actually affordable, including the convenient underground parking garage. I highly recommend seeing a performance here!

Unacceptable Treatment at Aalto-Theater in Essen My recent experience at the Aalto Theater in Essen was deeply disappointing and frankly, quite shocking. As professional musicians visiting from out of town, we simply wanted to inquire about the program and upcoming shows. We were dressed as typical tourists, in comfortable clothes suitable for exploring the city – not that our attire should ever warrant the treatment we received. Before we could even properly articulate our request, a staff member rudely interrupted us, immediately demanding to see tickets and attempting to usher us out. Despite our repeated attempts to explain that we were not there for a show but merely seeking information, she continued to be dismissive and aggressive. It felt as though we were being judged solely on our appearance, which is utterly unprofessional and unwelcoming for any establishment, let alone a cultural venue. This kind of behavior from front-of-house staff is simply unacceptable. The people who are the face of a theater should embody politeness, respect, and a helpful attitude. This encounter left such a sour taste that we will not be considering this venue for future bookings or recommendations. If theaters wish to remain vibrant and attract a diverse audience, they must ensure their staff understand the importance of basic courtesy and professionalism. The majority of the audience seemed to be over 50, and I can't imagine this kind of unwelcoming atmosphere will encourage repeat visits from anyone.

Hügel Park is a stunning destination that offers visitors a delightful blend of history and natural beauty. Nestled near the iconic Villa Hügel, which was once home to the influential Krupp family, this park features an enchanting English landscape garden design. It's an ideal spot for leisurely strolls, where you can soak in breathtaking views of Lake Baldeneysee. The park's serene atmosphere makes it perfect for spending quality time with friends or loved ones while exploring its well-maintained paths and lush greenery.
Nice visit, a lot of information, sadly not much in English. Luckily the guard informed me to use Google lens to help me with translation so I could understand more of the history of the family and legacy!

A beautiful and historical place in Essen! Villa Hügel is much more than just a big old house — it’s full of history and character. Once the home of the Krupp family, the villa is huge and the architecture is really impressive. Inside, you’ll find well-preserved rooms and interesting exhibitions about the Krupp legacy and Germany’s industrial past. The best part for me was the peaceful park around the villa. It’s perfect for a walk, and you get some amazing views of Lake Baldeney. The area is clean, quiet, and very well-maintained. If you enjoy history, art, or just want to relax in a scenic and cultural spot, this place is totally worth a visit. Definitely one of the highlights in Essen!

Wonderful historical homestead of the famous Krupp's family. Very quant and a must see for anyone who loves history and art. Grounds are wonderfully maintained and house is immaculate for its age littered with lavish artwork throughout. We did not take the tour bit got around as we had a German speaker in our party which is important as the QR code to download the in house tour app does not allow downloads on phones not registered in Germany. All in all a great few hours out and also nearby at the riverside next door afterwards. Enjoy.

Restaurant Tablo offers a diverse Turkish menu with beautifully presented meze platters, lamb and fish specialties, and a wide selection of wines including Turkish varieties. The elegant dining room provides a communicative dining experience at long communal tables or smaller round ones. Guests praise the perfect service and lovely ambiance, while enjoying delicious appetizer platters and fresh fish paired with excellent Turkish rose wine and local beer. However, some note that the noise level can be high depending on the number of guests.
Magical spot in Essen. Close to the main train station, this restaurant has exceptional quality and service. The fish is fresh, the lamb outstanding and the starters out of this world. One of the worst dining experiences. Fish is slightly below average. Chicken for my daughter was bone dry and hard like rock, she can’t even swallow it. Very small portion, portion for side dish is a joke. Fine dining price, but food is a huge disappointment. 100% overpriced! Dorade is the cheapest fish on the menu with 30 euro. Other fish like Steinbut or Loup de mar costs 40 to 50 euro. The average price of main course is over 40 euro. We have 5 people including one kid, none of us were satisfied. The management concept is a total rip off. The only highlight was the bread serving at the beginning and the decoration of the restaurant.

Schnitzel was very good, nuremberg sausages were goog, leberkase (meatloaf) was like "watery" and not good. I would agree with other comments that sour cabbage and potato pure were mushy. The atmosphere is cheerful
Az R — Google review
The restaurant atmosphere was nice and the service was attentive. The food was just okay. The pork knuckle was overcooked and the sauerkraut was mushy. The goulash soup was good.

I’ve been to this restaurant already three times and I absolutely love it here! Their food is always amazing and the portions are perfect. Absolutely recommend this place if you are in Essen!
Mira G — Google review
It's probably the most typical German restaurant in the lazy Essen city center..better to reserve a table, in Essen is not easy to find a table for big groups. We were maybe 15 and service was terribly slow, we waited more than 1 h for the food . Beer was good, place is funny for not German people because a classic wooden place and food was OK. Naturally we had the pork shinl and was big and with regular taste...there is space outside and inside.

Being a tourist I thought I would have a warm welcome from the two staff on the contrary it was the opposite. The bold white gentleman served me was lukewarm friendly and kept staring at me which felt awkward. The Second Gentleman (muscular waiter) served me water in a hostile manner, I felt very intimidated and uncomfortable. Maybe they don’t like people of colour hence the hostility towards a mixed race British person. Regarding the food, the grilled chicken burger was delicious but the chips were undercooked.

The hamburger restaurant Traumkuh is a popular spot for food lovers out there. The interior can be quite nice in good weather, while the Aussengastronomie section offers tasty dishes like burgers and fries. Unfortunately, their burger sauce tastes too sweet which takes away from its potential. However, the burger itself is great with a crispy patty, fluffy bun and melted cheese on top. The poutine here is also excellent - definitely worth trying!
Wonderful place in Essen, great tasty burger although it kind of falls apart while you eat it, it still a five star one. Atmosphere was unmatched, I've never seen a restaurant decorated that well

Traumkuh has a variety of Burger options and Halal too. The interesting thing about them is being having a monthly special burger 🍔 😋 Really gives you a chance to experience new taste, plus the ambiance within it is 💯 and super amazing 👏 😍 You won't regret to go for a date there, specially for the ambiance. 9.5/10 - food 10/10 ambiance 8/10 staff

Restaurant Hannappel is a top choice for special celebrations, offering a delightful 5-course meal with wine that leaves patrons satisfied and smiling. The elegant ambience and friendly staff make guests feel at home, creating an unforgettable dining experience. Even those with initial doubts are pleasantly surprised by the well-prepared food and overall atmosphere of the restaurant. Visitors can opt for the 3-course surprise menu as a great introduction to this Essen gem.
Essen in Essen. A night out in a fine dining restaurant is always a good basis for a wonderful evening. If you add creative food that adds joy after joy to this experience, put a very well selected wine pairing on top and finish it with a perfect team that from the beginning making your first time visit a unique and almost family like time. Then you might catch a glimpse what I experienced yesterday evening in Hannappel. Along with this I really liked that they were really serious with filling the glasses, not just giving an idea what the wine could have been but allowing the guest to enjoy the selection with every bite they take. Just like you would do it with your loved ones at home. ❤️

An amazing experience! Had the 6 course menu with wine arrangement and everything was delicious. The staff were friendly and professional. An easy recommendation for a special dinner.
Claire D — Google review
This is the restaurant you would choose to celebrate special occasion. Anniversary, Birthday, Valentine, you name it all, and I think you and your partner will come home with big smile on your face and happy tummy. This was my third time coming here. This time I order 5 course meal with wine (cost €89 per person) and every penny are very well spent on those meals. If it’s happen to be your first time, you can try the 3-course surprise menu (it cost only €68 including wine). Normally I can say both me and my husband are eating quite a lot and perhaps come home still hungry even after 5-course meal in other fine dining restaurant. But not in Hannapel. There is something magical that I can’t explain why we always feel the right amount of “full” and “happy” after dining in this restaurant. Don’t forget to reserve before you come. Cheers.
Lily K — Google review
I visited the restaurant on the 17th of July after a spontaneous reservation the same day. I had the wonderful 5 course menue. In short, I am happy to visit this place again. The food was well prepared the personnel was nice and friendly. I had a lovely evening, thank you! In greater detail, I was positively surprised to find this place in Essen. I honestly had my doubts first but when I was making the reservation but they delivered. Quite frankly I haven't found a lot of places in essen where I happily spent more money on food and actually get in exchange a menue that is simply tasty while not being pretentious overkill. The 5 course menue was diverse and all the ingredients perfectly seasoned and prepared. The portion sizes were noted as too small by other people before me, however, I cannot agree. In comparison to other places, e.g. madame pic or Blumenthals restaurants, I found them quite sizeable. As I said, all ingredients were very enjoyable. The only note I would make, nitpickingly, I thought it contained a lot of different animal protein all at once. Sometimes mixing two "star ingredients" such as turbot and unagi in one dish was overwhelming for me. While I very much enjoyed the dish I secretly thought it overshadowed each other and I could have been happy with one of the two or less of the two together. It relates to balancing for me personally. Same with the dessert, while I thought all the flavors play incredibly well i was personally overwhelmed by the very acidic sauce. I was missing a neutralizing component, balancing all the sour and acidic flavors. Nevertheless, this is a personal, not very objective point :) that should not stop anyone to visit. Lastly, my only real criticism, was the cappuccino. This is something not many places get right and it seems to be neglectable. However, being a little coffee nerd myself, it is worth mentioning that the cappuccino was burned, with a coarse foam/crema, making it not up to the standard of the rest of food in the restaurant. All in all I had a lovely evening with great food to reasonable prices considering the level of care and creativity put in the dishes. I hope you guys keep it up and change the menue frequently. I would love to try more. All the best

One of the best restaurants in the Ruhr area is the ´Hannappel´ in Essen. The ´Eckkneipe´ of yore welcomes the guest with stylish ambience, elegance and unspoken wish ´feel at home.` What follows can only be done hard to describe, you have to experience. The festively set table with subtle Vivaldi music in the background, the result of exquisite dishes with in between cleverly installed surprises from the kitchen, matching drinks and the impeccably professional, unobtrusive staff service, that offers it all Knut Hannappel with his team. He wants to maintain this level in the future. A star more than overdue, but perhaps not sought.

We went there for Friday dinner. Staffs were super thoughtful and kind. Since we were East Asians they provided us chopsticks for us also. Food is authentic and delicious. But portion was a bit too much for us so we did take-out the remainders. The place is clean and nice. Will definitely revisit. Also they accept card which is a convenient point.

Great selection of South Asian dishes with lots of Malaysian and Indonesian influence. The food is really good and the staff was very friendly. The prices are also very reasonable and you definitely get your money's worth. We had dinner with 6 and paid about 130 eur all together.

Yesterday I went there with friend! They have both Chinese and German menus, which is very convenient. And moreover! It should be emphasized that 10% off recently! BUT you must pay in cash. I strongly recommend my favorite drink: Kiba. It is mix of banana juice and cherry juice. My friend drink Thai beer, very refreshing. If you like refreshing beer, try it! I have always liked to eat their eggplant. I used to order the spicy one. But yesterday I try the Nanyang-style roasted eggplant. I love it! Recommend! We ordered a new dish, not on the menu, it is chicken with salt and pepper. Man can choose the spiciness, we asked for slightly spicy. The chicken is very tender. There are also small pieces of onions and peppers. I don’t know the name, so I call it: Beef plus Tofu. Recommend!

Located in the heart of Essen's Theaterpassage, Sattgrün offers a delightful dining experience for vegetarians and vegans. The restaurant features a fantastic vegan buffet with an array of cooked dishes, salads, desserts, and cakes. Guests can choose their plate size and pay accordingly or opt for a bowl. All food and drinks are vegan, cholesterol-free, lactose-free, and free from genetically modified ingredients. Tasty vegan buffet 🌱 The food at all sattgrün locations is always well seasoned and delicious - unfortunately the variety of the dishes offered hasn’t changed in years. When I visited two years ago, the dishes were the same as today. Some dishes were also not available/empty when I was there around 14:00 on a Thursday. Besides that: satisfied

The staff are friendly and accommodating, with many speaking English, Italian, and German. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, creating a genuine sense of hospitality. From delicious pizzas to mouthwatering pasta dishes like carbonara and tagliatelle al salmone, the food is consistently excellent.

Wow that was the scariest experience I’ve ever had in a restaurant anywhere in the world! Lorenzo was too busy with other patrons to bring us menus so after 10 minutes we helped ourselves. When we finally grabbed his attention and said we would like another table setting and a candle (like all the other tables in the house) his anger was obvious. He begrudgingly took our order and then we decided it was best to go elsewhere. We advised in Italian we were cancelling our order, placed 30 seconds prior. This infuriated him and he became abusive. Then showed his intolerance and ignorance towards foreigners when he heard English and Portuguese. As if that wasn’t enough he then gave us the finger repeatedly and swore to our faces. When we returned 5 minutes later to retrieve our umbrellas from outside the restaurant he returned to continue his show of psychotic behaviour. Funny that - he didn’t have 2 minutes to spare to bring menus to our table but was readily available for about 10 minutes of abusive and borderline criminal behaviour. Non ci vediamo piu! Think twice about letting a psychopath prepare a dinner for you!

I regularly visit but whoever made my T-bone on the 26.07.2025 around 9pm, you deserve a gold medal, the best I have ever had. Delicious dessert. Wide variety from starter to dessert to drinks. Friendly and good service. Love sitting inside, outside is slightly busy for me, it’s in the city but in a calmer place. Paid Parking on the street is available about 25-50 meters from the restaurant.

Lovely setting and a good steak (missed some oomph and charcoal taste, tbh). Decent (not awesome) options of cuts. The house red wine is very good. The desserts are also good. On the plus side, they're open until 10pm (kitchen included!), which is an ideal option for hungry travellers!

Steaks were insanely good, but still a very disappointing experience because of 1 waiter: The gentleman with glasses that was mostly serving outside, was very hasty. We both wanted to order the same thing, so my girlfriend let me say it. This man didn’t want to hear it, turned his back to me and only wanted to listen to my girlfriend. When she was ordering, he would litteraly get irritated if she didn’t answer within 2 seconds. After, when paying, he got angry when i didn’t tip because of his rude way of taking orders. Very very unprofessional. I’m sorry to the owners of the restaurant for this review, but I had to speak my mind.

What a disaster. Our group of 80 people had agreed on a fixed menu months in advance, with an average price of €22 per dish. But what we got was far from that... I waited 1.5 hours for my meal—and I was lucky, because others had to wait even longer! On top of that, there was only one vegetarian option. Then came the bill. Not only were we charged for tap water we never ordered, but sides like potatoes and gravy suddenly turned out to be extra. We ended up paying at least €8 more per person, which adds up to over €600 in outright rip-off! And as if that wasn’t bad enough, there were items on our bill that we never ordered. To make matters worse, the cashier was completely incompetent. My order had to be re-entered three times, as if she didn’t know what she was doing. It all felt very suspicious, like I was being forced to pay without anything actually being deducted from the bill. And the cherry on top? The next day, multiple people in our group suffered from stomach problems. Apparently, food hygiene is not a priority here. This restaurant is a DISGRACE. Deceptive practices, terrible service, and possibly unsafe food. Save yourself the trouble and go somewhere else!

I recently went with my friend, and we both had a fantastic experience! The place has such a lovely and vibrant atmosphere. The décor and art on the walls give the place a cool and hipster vibe. The music was quite loud, but I personally enjoyed it, and props to the DJ—he was great! The food was absolutely delicious. Every dish we tried (see photos) was flavorful and perfectly prepared. The service was also great. All in all, a wonderful experience. I’m taking my friends there again soon :D One thing to note: it’s a very busy spot, so I’d recommend making a reservation in advance. HABEEZ Essen-Rüttenscheid is a popular spot known for serving some of the best falafel in town. The friendly and energetic staff provide fast service, making it great for takeaways. The menu offers fresh and healthy food at very reasonable prices, with the option to create your own mixes. However, the limited seating means it can get crowded, especially during busy hours. I have ordered and bought food from them many times as I like their food. The service is usually very kind. Last time i went in there was a waitress who made a mistake in my order and she was asked politely to change it. For no reason she became angry and agresively placed the new food on the table and went away. Nobody did anything wrong to her. Such behaviour gives a really bad feeling. The architecture is stunning, and the exhibitions offer insightful information about Jewish history in the region. The building’s peaceful atmosphere makes it a moving place for reflection. The staff is very polite and friendly. If you have large bags, you’ll need to deposit them in self-service lockers using a 1 euro coin, which is refundable when you return it. A must-visit for anyone interested in history or cultural heritage !

2022.4.29 It was on my way to downtown. According to wiki, it "is one of the largest, best preserved and architecturally most impressive testimonies to Jewish culture in pre-war Germany." In 1913, it was the new synagogue. There was a police car parked near by.

It was very interesting for me as I was not familiar with Jewish beliefs before. The synagoge is gorgeous and you are free to explore all floors (for free) and stay as long as you like. There are also exibitions on each floor. I would highly recommend it to everyone!

Really interesting! The museum inside is very modern done, lots of things to see and do. There is a wall with famous people that have some kind of Jewish relation, and you are able to see and learn some traditional Jewish dances. This was really fun to do.

Sushi Haus is a renowned establishment, known for being Essen's first sushi restaurant since 1998. Located on Ruttenscheiderstrasse, the cozy and warm atmosphere of this small restaurant offers an authentic Japanese dining experience. The menu boasts a wide selection of vegetarian dishes, and the sushi, green tea, and soups are particularly delicious. The attentive staff ensures prompt service in this sparsely decorated space that prioritizes efficiency over lingering.
We came here to take some sushi out. For 5 people the total price was roughly 100 euro, which was really cheap and most of all, they tasted nice. Of course we didn’t expect it to be of so high quality as if in a more dedicated restaurant but for people who would like to grab some sushi and don’t want to spend too much money, this place can be recommended. While waiting i ordered some small food; generally the atmosphere there was friendly and relaxing.

I enjoyed my time here a lot! Very authentic japanese food, in a cozy setting. The restaurant itself is not big in size, but had a great variety. Sushi tasted as fresh as it could be and very professionally made. The mint tea was also amazing. Plus, it’s always good that they don’t close mid-day during the weekends. Absolutely worth a visit!

this must be the best neighbourhood to live in around Essen - beautiful, serene environment. the hotel is very old but very well maintained. service is excellent and very consistent. the restaurant is very good too, although a bit pricey. Edeka is right outside, with a bakery and ice cream shop just round the corner. parking is a breeze. the only downside is the very weak aircon, but a fan was provided and it was enough in mid summer. i stayed for 15 nights and i will not hesitate to stay here again.

We need to be in Essen every 3 weeks for a few months and were searching for a nice place to disconnect and relax for 3 days. Well we found it ! The area is like paradise, nice woods for breathing and for the dog to play with other nice dogs, great houses, really green and nice. We felt welcomed and well treated, people are warm and friendly. The room was big and had huge windows, really nice and not claustrophobic like some other hotels. The bed is really comfortable and the room is clean. The breakfast is a little too expensive in comparison of other hotels for the same type of food but it's made with love, served with love and the croissants are like in France ( not easy to find in Germany). We are so happy of this hotel, that we reserved in advance for the next times !!

The hotel was nice, clean, and in a beautiful location. The staff were friendly and accommodating. The breakfast buffet was excellent. We were traveling with a 2 year old and we asked for a children’s bed. They set one up the first day but I was surprised to be charged quite a bit extra for it. Had we known we would have brought our pack and play from home, sadly we were not informed of the extra charge until after the fact, therefore I removed stars from an otherwise nice experience.

Too expensive for the quality one gets. Three person room, was a two person room with an added stretcher....advertised "free parking" on the Square is not possible on friday and tuesday because of the market the next day. One may park in the hotel parking, for €9,-.... Something we read on a leaflet in our room, so we needed to go back to the car and find another spot. Would have been nice if mentioned at the check in. Breakfast was ok. Not recommended.

The Colosseum Theater in Essen is a historical gem, housed in a former factory dating back to 1901. Once a bustling industrial site, the building has been transformed into a conference center and theater while retaining its architectural charm. This venue stands as a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage and offers visitors an opportunity to experience top-notch musicals and concerts. The theater's unique history and stunning architecture make it an essential stop for anyone interested in Essen's cultural scene.
The concert hall is very modern and stylish. We had a chance to visit ballet Swan lake and seated in the 9 row where we had a great view. The hall acoustic was perfect and we enjoyed the classical music. Snacks were offered during a break and right before the beginning of the ballet. We also went up to the balcony and the view from there is not that good, the scene seems to be very far and small. Overall, it was a good performance at the great place!
Julia A — Google review
1900-1901: The brick building, originally known as the 8th mechanical workshop, was erected as an industrial hall on the eastern edge of the former Essen Krupp cast steel factory. World War II: The hall was not destroyed during the war, but the statue of the Alfred Krupp memorial in front of the workshop was toppled by aerial bombs. 1983-1987: AEG-Kanis rented and later owned the factory building, producing steam turbines initially and later gas turbines. Gas turbines and compressors were manufactured for the natural gas pipeline from Siberia to Western Europe. 1991: After AEG-Kanis relocated, the building was placed under monument protection. January 1993: Plans were made to convert the old brownfield site into a more attractive area for tourism and new industries. July 1994: A usage concept was presented to convert the industrial building into a musical theater, and it was named Colosseum Theater as a tribute to the Varieté Theater that existed in Essen from 1899 to 1929. May 1995-December 1996: The building was converted into a musical theater by the architects Kohl & Kohl. The original steel construction and glazed roof were preserved, and the stage tower and auditorium were integrated. The theater hall could accommodate over 1400 people, and the foyer had space for around 2000 people. 1996-2000: Stella Entertainment AG operated the theater. August 2000: Stage Entertainment took over the musical venue after Stella AG's insolvency. From this point on, musicals were no longer performed at the Colosseum Theater. February 17, 2020: The RAG Foundation and energy company E.ON purchased the Colosseum with plans to establish a center for innovation from July 1, 2020.

Nice little concert hall. We went to see Nick Cave and had a great time. Bathrooms are a little bit far away from the stage. You have to go up 2 floors, which was not a big deal for me, but I saw no elevators for people with disabilities or the Elderly. Who knows... maybe I just missed them🤷. The venue is a couple of stops away from Essen HBF. You can take the S-Bahn.

Ruine Neue Isenburg, located in the Stadtwald district, offers a glimpse into the Middle Ages with its well-preserved ruins perched on a rocky outcrop above Baldeneysee. Once the largest and most significant fortification in the region, it now features a historic experience trail providing insights into its history and inhabitants. Visitors can explore restored foundations and enjoy stunning views of Baldeneysee while walking along the slope or descending towards the water.
A special place to me as someone who lives in Essen for about a year now. I love going on walks and hikes and this spot is the one spot (among a few others) that I keep coming back to. The view from here is great, there are some plaques with the ruins history explained and not a lot of people go here. If you walk a hit further, you'll find a path going to your left. Keep going straight onto some rocks and you'll have the best view in Essen!

I came with my friends. the waitress only took the order for one person and turned and left. After that, my friend called us to order and she was very rude, she brought a drink and hit the table with all her might every drink she put down on the table. And she turned and left. 1 drink was still missing. we waved her to come, even though the garden was empty, she went around us. After that I went in and talked to another waiter who said that he would talk to her and that he would come to our table to take the order after 10 minutes she still didn't come to our table just laughing in our face. I went inside and talked to the manager of the shift and said that I will not pay for the drink that arrived incorrectly and the order was not complete and that the waitress is very unprofessional and unkind and that I am very disappointed. The shift leader tried to excuse the waitress, but no one solved the problem. While she was laughing in his face the whole time. After that we got up and left. I will certainly not come there again. The waitress had blond hair and was small. I do not recommend this cafe to anyone, because the service is 0 points. I'm really disappointed. Since I am a well-known influencer, I will publish a cafe with a bad rating on my profile.

I know this chain from a few years ago and had mixed feelings about it - I was always charmed by the decor, but the service was not always nice. Today's experience in Essen was the nicest we've had so far - very friendly staff and perfect service, food served quickly (there was no heavy traffic at this time) and very tasty. We were served here the most beautiful nude burger we've eaten so far (pictured). I also really liked the graphic design of the menu card!

The Manu is too complicated specially if you don't speak German. But the waiters were so kind and friendly. (didn't speak English as well) So my suggestion is to read the Manu before it's a pdf available on their website and then go there. The burgur is good not the best the meat was a little bit dry. They have cocktail and new handmade drinks on menu but not e normal fresh mohitoo or. Limonade only the ones with can are available if you are allergic to fruits. But over all it was a nice experience and the environment was really awesome.
Parand K — Google review
Super understaffed! When we arrived, no one was there to greet us so someone behind the bar had to shout at us and point in the direction of some free tables. It then took ** 20 minutes ** for someone to come and take our order. The place wasn't even busy, it was maybe 1/3 full which evidently makes management think they can get away with having only like 4 front staff who are then rushed off their feet... We ordered food, non-alcoholic drinks and cocktails, which they said they'd bring us later, after food. The food arrived about 10 mins later, but with both sets of drinks at once which made things a bit cramped. Food itself was really nice! We both got the same burger with the onion rings and BBQ sauce. I'd definitely come back for the food and drinks if it weren't for the wait we had. Also, toilets had no soap and some of the dryers were either off or broken which was a bit annoying.

Nestled in the southern part of Essen, near the renowned Folkwangmuseum, the Soul of Africa Museum offers a captivating glimpse into African art and culture, with a particular emphasis on West African traditions and voodoo practices. This private museum showcases an impressive collection of artifacts, including intricate costumes and masks from the Yoruba tribe that play vital roles in ancestral rituals. The Soul of Africa Museum is dedicated to preserving cultural heritage while fostering intercultural friendships between Africans and local residents.
I could spend all day here asking Henning Christoph question after question. So many interesting, thought provoking secrets from the Diaspora. Henning's knowledge is extensive and more than likely far beyond what any other Anthropologist and/or Researcher could ever have access to. A must visit Museum that should be locally and state funded for expansion!

Such a delightfully educational experience! The collection is massive and so charismatic. Largely due to the eye-opening, empirical knowledge of the ethnologist/photojournalist who guides the visitors through the collection. Definitely makes me want to go back and have a closer look at the stuff I might have missed!

An absolutely fascinating experience. If you have any interest in anthropology, African culture and history, voodoo, or just the unusual or macabre, I highly recommend a visit. I went rather spontaneously while on holiday in the area and wasn't sure what to expect, so I just rang the doorbell and hoped for the best. Fortunately I arrived just as a group of three others were about to start the guided tour, so I was able to join them. My ability to speak German is very limited, but the curator and other visitors were willing to do the tour in English, for which I am very grateful to them all! We were shown many extremely interesting and rare items related to voodoo and the African diaspora, and given many extremely interesting facts and backstories about them. The curator is a captivating person who has great knowledge and personal experience with his subject matter. It is obvious that he cares deeply about Africa and it's people, beliefs and customs. Definitely bring cash as card payments are not accepted. I found the experience well worth the money. I recommend calling ahead, especially if you are not fluent in German. But most of all I just recommend going! This museum deserves much more space and recognition, a true hidden gem.

Really interesting and worthwhile visit. It is important to know that one must make an appointment beforehand, and that only a limited number of visitors can be accomodated at one time. Henning Christophs extensive knowledge of central Africa and its diaspora is amazing, this must not be lost and will benefit greatly from external (national) funding if this jewel of knowledge is to be relocated and saved for all time. All carefully preserved unique objects and materials have been collected during Mr Christophs research and collaboration with local groups and organisations, NOT as a result of 'stealing' perpetrated by so many nations in the past. The stories Mr Christoph tells are personal and of first hand experience. PLEASE VISIT!, I can wholheartedly reccomend the richly illustrated book 'African Secrets', which can be purchased for just 15 euro, which will also support this fantasic museums future.

The Nord bar is a well-known institution in the city of Essen for rock, metal and alternative music. It is particularly popular with bands and their fans at the annual Nord Open Air festival. The cafe offers drinks including hot and cold favourites, as well as an extensive menu of breakfast, pizza, burgers, cutlets and pasta dishes. In addition to games of pool and a large seating area, there's also a bar with live music on offer.
This is THE place to go in Essen if you like good food without pretentiousness and with a rock flaired atmosphere. I've spent so many evenings there listening to music and enjoying the drinks, but these days I come for the food, especially the Burgers on Mondays. At first, they may seem like odd mixtures with some toppings that appear out of place like grilled chorizo or fig, but every time I had one, it all came together in a nice savory blend with great spice levels and texture. I dont know how much thought the chef puts into the burgers, but to me, they seem incredibly well balanced. Now, taking into consideration that they are competently crafted, the price seems extremely competitive, too. All while being able to listen to some awesome metal and rock tunes with the atmosphere of a total habor bar, I love it.
Nicolas O — Google review
Great metal bar, amazing atmosphere and the vibe is always top. The food is surprisingly good for a bar and they've expanded their menu since the last time I went . There's even a billiards room upstairs with it's own bar. The only possible drawback is that the staff can be a bit "cold" but hey, it's a metal bar

Friendly and quick service. Cheap beers and good bar food. There’s a whole vegan menu which is a bonus. Our server accidentally miscalculated our bill so we ended up paying 10€ more.
Devan J — Google review
The food is good, the staff is kind and there are different areas to suit your atmosphere preference. I didn't enjoy all the cocktails we tried but that was less than a minor inconvenience. Will come back. Good vegan options.

A hard rock/metal bar with a very unique atmosphere! The place can look a bit intimidating from the outside, but the staff and everyone is extremely friendly! They'll never leave you with an empty beer for long. The bar also has a great playlist of rock/metal songs, perfect for those who like this type of music. Everything is also really well-priced.

Cant comment about the food as we didnt have any although it looked good seeing other dishes go out. Looking for a rock bar which plays actual heavier music and that what we got, prices on drinks was reasonable with a good size drink, the atmosphere was great, the design and aesthetic was perfect for some casual drinks with anyone who enjoys the music.

Right before heading back home, we were looking for a quick and affordable snack. This place had it all, with a great service on top of it. At a 10 minutes walk from the station in an open area with a nice terrace. It was a nice closure of our stay in Essen.
Matthias B — Google review
This review goes across two visits. Once for lunch and once for a late breakfast. Looked to be a decent place, but the paintings were crooked for some inexplicable reason. Not just off a little bit, but purposely hung crooked. I'm sorry, but that takes away from the otherwise cozy atmosphere. Lunch: we ordered a craft mocktail, an avocado and egg bread, and a schnitzel. The schnitzel was good, no real complaints at all. The bread item was... lacking. It was very cold, and wet, and soggy, to our dismay, because the taste itself was good. To be fair, it didn't actually say "toast" on the menu, but one would expect such an item to be toasted. The mocktail was good with fresh raspberries. Good service this time around. We thought to give it another go for our late breakfast. Ordered pancakes, a caesar wrap, scrambled eggs and bacon, and a bread and cheese plate. The description for the bread was a bit confusing, and the server really didn't know how to explain the choices properly either. After quite some time, a completely different server brought our food to us. The pancakes cost €8,50 for some very small and sad cakes. The menu only says you get five but doesn't give a size, and at that price, it almost feels deceitful. The eggs were okay, but they forgot the bacon. This was corrected in a timely manner, by the second waiter. The bread was ok, but the caesar wrap was something else. Firstly, I have never in my life heard of a hot caesar wrap. Maybe the chicken inside would be hot, but not the whole thing. I'm guessing it was baked, but whatever they did to it was completely ass backwards. The lettuce was wilted and hot, the dressing turned into a runny mess, and the chicken was just warm somehow. Biting into it caused it to explode the hot, runny sauce. It fell apart under its own liquids shortly after, and we resorted to eating it with a knife and fork. That barely worked, but this is a horrible menu item. After we finally finished we waited around for some 20 minutes. Our server was running around but just wouldn't come back to the table, even though our plates were cleared by someone else. I was tired of waiting so I hailed another server for our check. Pretty bad service the second visit with middling food. I wouldn't recommend this place.

Nice place for a quick bite for breakfast in a central location. Classic Celona charm and atmosphere, good quality, good service. Nice and spacious terrace as well protected by plexiglass panels for a bit of privacy so that you can enjoy your time there. Security at front are all rude and looking for a simple reason not to let you in. We've been there 3 times and each time they did their worst to not to let us in. Most recently, because I wore sandals IN SUMMER. Then when you pass the CIA, you expect good music... which unfortunately not gonna happen with them DJs...
Amir E — Google review
I’ve been to this club many times before and usually had a good experience. However, last weekend was extremely disappointing. I arrived with a friend, and the security staff immediately told us to leave. They were rude and claimed we couldn’t enter because my friend had dyed part of her hair green. Then, they changed their reasoning and said we were “too drunk,” even though my friend was simply speaking a bit loudly. To address their concerns, we went to a nearby shop, bought water, and drank more than a liter each. After waiting 1.5 hours to sober up completely, we tried again, only to be turned away once more without any valid explanation. When I explained we were now sober and even showed them the empty water bottles, one of the security guards said, “You can be more sober than me, and I still wouldn’t let you in.” This behavior was unprofessional, unfair, and frankly insulting. I hope the management takes action to improve the conduct and training of their security team, as such treatment is unacceptable and tarnishes the club’s reputation.

Excellent place for partying in large groups. I was there recently at an event, and the place is massive. There is some construction work going on near its entrance, so finding a good parking place could be a bit tricky. Inside, the place has a modular design, so it can be perfect for creating silent corners, while also having dance floors!
Soumya C — Google review
I tried to go there this weekend with friends. The security told my friend first : "nicht heute" and then saw my Ausweis, which was a foreign Ausweis because I keep my German documents at home, took a look at it and said "nicht heute" to me to. I tried to ask why but the security woman was rolling her eyes and just gestured to move away, she looked very close to throwing a punch to. It was completely uncalled for, we weren't rude or anything just asked why and we got treated as if we're criminals or something. I suspect it was because of my foreign ID I gave them and I have to say it was a huge disappointment. I've been living in Germany for 2 years now and I go out almost every weekend and it's the first time something like this happened to me. It was very distasteful, disgraceful and unprofessional. I thought Germany is a progressive country but this made me think it isn't. I would never in a million years try to go back there.
Semra V — Google review
Beautiful venue. Really suprised me as I expected just a regular club like every other and got a super industrial, well decorated and MASSIVE club to enjoy. Lots of space in and outside, places to sit and bars to buy drinks. Sadly there is pretty limited and oddly placed dancefloors in some of the halls. Music was nice, went on NYE, a mix of different styles. About a 50/50 mix between English and German songs. Drinks were very cheap. Also personally despite my color, I had 0 problems at entrance, unlike many other reviews.

Turock is a haven for rock and metal enthusiasts, offering raw, unpolished charm and top-notch sound systems that make every riff and drumbeat resonate in your bones. Hiya, we came here for the black metal revelation. And as cool as the music was especially acoustics, the Guinness you guys poured was a bit of an insult. :( 400ml for 6€ and it looked really sad... I can surely teach you how to pour it, and make it taste worth the 6€ because frankly, it wasn't worth 6€ seeing how the local pubs in cologne charge the same and pour it proper EVEN during rush hour ;D

Small venue with okeish sound (it sounded good, but not without its issues). I think this place is all about the vibe and it is great place for small hard rock / heavy metal kind of bands. Super nice Snaggletooth above one of the bars. They sell quite good draft beer from Guinness or also bottled Becks. You have to pay in cash for everything.

The good things: the sangria and chips (yes, just the chips) were good. The staff were friendly enough when they interacted with us (which was only to order drinks/food). While I do understand that Germany and Europe as a whole don't really do the "Americanized customer service" thing, some interaction during service is appreciated. The bad: everything that I had (again, other than the chips and sangria) was bland and missing a lot of flavor. I ordered the Bistec del Che (a 300g steak you cook on a hot rock), rosemary potatoes, and guacamole with chips. To start, the guacamole that came with the chips was portioned for a child. There was maybe 25g of guacamole, which is not sufficient for the 10,5€ we paid for it. Next, my steak, which was 300g for 33,9€, while the "experience" of cooking it on a hot rock was cool for some, you could tell it was a low quality steak and almost 15% of it was inedible due to tendons and fat. The steak was also wildly underseasoned and tasteless. Not to mention the potato"es" that came with as a side (which listed as an additional side are 6,5€) I put the 'es' in quotes because it was single a quartered potato. And the dip I ordered (the green pepper sauce) was like dipping into a void of warm nothingness. The nachos were wildly overpriced - along with most everything ordered - especially with no meat & how small the guacamole portion was. The portion sizes, food quality, and taste simply were extremely underwhelming and rather disappointing. €6.90 for a large still water when other places it's around €5. €10.90 for chips, shredded cheese, jalapeños, and a miniscule amount of guacamole & sour cream. €33.90 for a tasteless & low quality steak & potato. €18.90 for rice, vegetables, a small amount of chicken, processed & prepacked tasting "salsa." €14.90 for .5 L sangria, a little pricey, although good. The look of the restaurant was interesting and pleasant enough and the sangria was tasty but that was really it. I really want to give this restaurant/experience 2 stars. But I feel there could have been just a bad night of service. Not an excuse, but from someone who has worked the food industry. I understand. I hope improvement comes from this review so that future customers are more satisfied than we were.

Nestled in the heart of Essen, Hotel Friends Zeche Zollverein offers a unique blend of modern comfort and industrial charm. Just a short stroll from the historic Zollverein Coal Mine, this trendy hotel features unpretentious rooms and suites that are thoughtfully designed with an anthracite color scheme, echoing its coal mining heritage.
I recently stayed at this hotel and was blown away by the entire experience. From the moment I arrived, I was greeted by incredibly friendly and supportive staff who made me feel right at home. The hotel itself is nothing short of stunning—I've never seen anything like it. The décor in both the lobby and the rooms is absolutely breathtaking, with every detail carefully thought out to create a luxurious and inviting atmosphere. The rooms are not only beautiful but also extremely comfortable, making it easy to relax and unwind. One of the highlights of my stay was the breakfast. The selection was huge, catering to all tastes and preferences. Whether you’re in the mood for something light or a hearty meal, they have it all. Overall, this hotel exceeded all my expectations. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a unique and unforgettable stay.

I contacted the establishment to cancel one of my two nights of staying 8 WEEKS before the actual dates because of a change in my schedule, they refused to cancel the first night, didn't even refund a part of it. Absolutely horrible costumer practices. Especially as it was during a big concert in the region, most of the hotels were full they would have found another customer easily.

We have checked with tjem to reconfirm the orders and all was OK. Now two weeks before they called us with rooms cancellation due to system glitch. This happened apparently to another 20guests booked and they had to cancel their rooms. We are in 2024 pls fix your systems. Friends Zeche Zollverein is situated at, almost literally, a stone throw distance from the Zollverein grounds. The location is excellent, but the parking price is, at 10 euro a bit steep if you're just spending one night there. Three stars for the rooms; and that is a bit personal. The room we had was painted in an anthracite color. That color fits into the coal mine theme of the hotel, but lends a very gloomy feel to the location. Also there was no mini bar and, for some reason, there was a window in the shower indirectly facing the room's window. Depending on your inclination towards privacy, that was a bit odd. The breakfast was pricey, but we found out that was the case for all hotels in the surroundings. When we visited (14-08), however, there was no seating available for breakfast and we had to sit in one of the meeting rooms. No big problem, but for €19,50 p.p. one would expect to at least have a table to sit at. Overall, the experience was very good still, but for the hotel's pricepoint one could expect a bit more.

The bar Südrock rocks with its great atmosphere and selection of drinks. It's perfect for a night out with friends or to catch a rock concert. The staff are friendly and welcoming, making it the perfect place to relax after a busy day.
Favorite pub in town . Rock gigs , guiness beer , friendly service . Cant ask for anything more from a top rock pub . Highly recommend for rock lover .
Gia B — Google review
Authentic night bar with a wide range of music played (often live). There is a party room that can also be hired. The service is, in keeping with the tradition of the region, rough but friendly. Whether during the week or at the weekend, you should have experienced the Südrock in Essen.

One of the liviliest places in Essen. Friendly stuff , nice beer and a nice rock concert the night we went there. A good option to have fun at night

I went there for a concert and the event room is definitely the same as it was 50 years ago and it's great to have these feelings, I'm thankful for these vintage vibrations

Night club
Goethebunker, located in Essen's Ruttenscheid area, is a unique club housed in a former air raid shelter and horse accessory store. It offers an intimate setting with two distinct rooms catering to different music preferences. The venue hosts diverse parties featuring electronic music, hip hop, and indierock, making it a favorite among techno enthusiasts and club-goers.
Good djs. Funktion one are inside so you can admire sound quality. Atmosphere is great. And the club was actually remodeled. It is not always open, so please check their website to have more information about all that will happened. It is not a pricey place and people are friendly overall.
J T — Google review
Terrifying experience – avoid for your own safety! I was violently attacked by a man with medium-long hair who claimed to be the owner of goethebunker during bunkerknacht event. I was simply standing in the smoking area for fresh air (as the club is a closed bunker with heavy smoke machine use, making it hard to breathe). This man aggressively told me I could not stand there unless I was smoking and that I had to leave “or else.” When I questioned this, he called the bouncer and physically attacked me. As a result, I was left with bruises all over my body. They also refused to return my bag containing my expensive DJ equipment and laptop, and I was only able to retrieve it after calling the police. I have been in the rave scene for 18 years as both a DJ and dancer and have never experienced such violence and discrimination at a club anywhere in the world. This was an absolutely unacceptable and traumatizing experience. ⚠️ If you value your safety, think twice before entering this club. ⚠️
Raul S — Google review
A club for open-minded people and those who don’t put too much emphasis on wanting to be on overpowering areas. Even then as now, this place remains in my heart a familiar location in which you can simply meet & enjoy the most diverse "character people" on clear Club-Areas. The aisle area to the wardrobe passage is actually the only minor flaw in this Location, which could use a refresh. Otherwise, I can only give the well-deserved five stars with a clear conscience and look forward to the next time!

Good space and good soundystem only if they could go easy on the smoke machine!!
Subhra S — Google review
one of my favourite electronic clubs, top notch FUNKTION 1 sound system ( the best around) . Very good and friendly crowd, good staff and very good music bookings. Basic but good interior design.. theres often a second room with different music. English door policy ( no hanging out outside, once you in you in ) .prices are totally fair and af´fordable. Highly recommmended! For those who care about music one of the best clubs in Germany
Andy W — Google review
Essen’s serious clubbers congregate at Goethebunker, a World War II-era air raid bunker-turned-horse-supply-store-turned-nightclub. These days it houses two rooms: one with a livelier atmosphere propagated by glittering disco balls and another with a darker mood. The club is in an industrial neighborhood at the intersection of Essen’s surrounding areas that attracts club goers from many different parts of north-west Germany.

Located in Essen, 19 Down is a trendy club known for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse music scene. Descend the 19 steps into the club to be greeted by energetic beats and live performances by renowned artists from the rap and techno scenes. The venue exudes sophistication without being pretentious, offering meticulously crafted cocktails and a curated blend of deep house and electro music.
Really great dudes just not letting anybody in for no reason, although the place is empty. Great way to make money.... Let the bouncers decide who gets in and when. They have the brains to decide.

Very Bad club And Racism at worst total discrimination at the door from the security guards and I hope the owners fix the problem. I cant recommend this Club to anyone because of the lack of respect to the customers .

Not even close to the word night club. It's just a basement with a speaker. And it cost like a 5 stars nightclub.

(Translated by Google) Unfortunately, it's not a good club: the same music every week; the songs always stop after 30 seconds; it seems like there's a fight every week because there's no security downstairs and it's so crowded; the men are particularly pushy, and the restrooms aren't clean. The only thing that's okay is the drink prices, but they're rudely served. (Translated by Google) The Westend Club in Essen is a great location for fans of electronic music and a lively club scene. The atmosphere is unique, with a mix of underground flair and modern club culture. Of particular note is the music, the selection of DJs is first class, and the sound system ensures an immersive experience. The events are well organized and the audience is diverse, creating an open and friendly atmosphere. The staff is also mostly friendly and professional. Another plus point is the creative design of the events, which always provides surprises. A small point of improvement is the bar - waiting times can sometimes be a bit long, especially at well-attended events. The prices could also be a little fairer. Nevertheless, the positive aspects outweigh the negatives and I would love to come back!

(Translated by Google) ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ For me, the Westend Club in Essen is one of the most exciting and modern party locations in the city 🎶💃🕺. As soon as you enter, you can feel the energy – a stylish ambiance, sophisticated lighting, and a sound that immediately makes you want to dance 🔊✨. The venue is large, yet laid out in such a way that you never feel lost. Several areas, cozy lounges, and a spacious dance floor make the club perfect for both long nights of partying and relaxed gatherings with friends. The light and laser shows, in particular, create a real festival feeling 🎆. Musically, the Westend Club offers a diverse selection: from charts to hip-hop, house, and electro to special events with DJs 🎧. This gives every guest the chance to celebrate their favorite music. The drink prices are fair 💸, the selection of cocktails 🍹 and long drinks is extensive, and the service at the bar is fast and friendly. Specials and promotions ensure that it never gets boring. The crowd is diverse, cheerful, and the atmosphere is always lively. Security is present but unobtrusive, creating a feeling of safety 👍. In conclusion: The Westend Club Essen is a top-notch modern club with great music, a great atmosphere, and excellent service. This is the place for anyone who wants to party. 5 stars for me, without a doubt 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟.

(Translated by Google) Unfortunately, I can't comment on the food, as I've always attended night events. First of all, I think the ambiance is great. Detailed designs and nicely decorated. The staff were neutral. Unfortunately, there's one major problem that means I won't go there again, and that's the men's restroom issue. There are only two stalls, but the biggest problem is that there's only one with a lock. As someone with a small bladder, it's torture for me when 10 people are waiting for you to finish because that's the only functioning restroom. Until this problem is solved, so that at least two stalls can be locked, I won't be visiting this place again. This problem didn't just occur on one evening, but at six events in a row. What a shame... Schade…

(Translated by Google) Totally great! My son celebrated his 9th birthday there with friends and did crafts. The two very nice ladies were very friendly (no wonder they both come from the north) 😉 The only food we had was the nibbles we had brought with us, but I was filled with wonderful coffee ☕️ and was able to join in in a relaxed manner or stop the nice ladies from working. 😅🤣😉 Thank you for the lovely 2.75 hours 🤣😉😉😉 MFG from the Hamburgers.
