Planetarium Bochum is a state-of-the-art domed astronomy center featuring the advanced Velvet-FullDome-Projection system, making it one of the most sophisticated planetariums globally. With a 20-meter diameter dome and high-definition shows, visitors can embark on mesmerizing journeys through the solar system, distant galaxies, and alien planets. The circular corridor hosts complementary exhibitions related to the current shows.
A great place to bring future star Gazers, They have kids shows, for kids starting from the ages of 4, my kids 4 and 9 loved it, the show incorporated star constellations, so there was something there for everyone, with lots of information , we will visit again I want to see what the other shows for older kids are like, at the moment (August 2022) masks still need to be worn inside, also as a small note the one kids show we saw had slightly older CGI, but the kids really enjoyed it, i have seen from the websire that each show is different, but the information is well brought over for the kids and we had 2 very happy kids when we left
Shane F — Google review
Expected more. It is basically a domed cinema. No much if exhibit. I certainley recommend booking in advance as I did not do that and did not get to entet to the show due to fullness of the planitarium.I would say that it probably deserve more than this rating should I had the chance to see the show.

Amazing show 👏🏻✨️ Friendly colleague.

We went to a very nice exposition called “from big bang to humanity”. It was really nice explained and very understanding even if it wasn’t in my mother language. Very recommended place!!! We will come gladly to another exhibition
Judith C — Google review
A definitive visit. Enjoyed my time there 👍 but I should say English shows are not available.
Kisor M — Google review
We went to the Planetarium Bochum with our kid for the first time and all of us had a blast. We had been there before, even as kids ourselves. It’s always nice to get a perspective on science and possible futures. The staff there is always so friendly and the prices are fair for what is shown. Definitely read the descriptions of the program or watch the trailers and decide what best fits your interest. Also if you don’t want to wait, buy tickets online. Full recommendation.
A. J — Google review
Our 2nd time here. Enjoyable for adults and kids. Highly recommended
Ken Y — Google review
Very nice. Here there are lot of during the day. Ticket prices and information about the shows are available on their website. The show which I watched is really interesting. Also several children are at the show and they are really interesting to watch the show. The projector and the screen is very big and good clarity picture. It projects all over the top sealing of the planetarium. Tickets can also buy at the counter for these shows. Other than that there are some interesting articles in the corrider such as several pictures, an astronaut suit model where people can take the pictures, an old projector, and other interesting things are there. A small cafe and WC are also available here.

The trains are good but almost non of them are open
Benett L — Google review
Great for a day out, but pick good weather as you need to walk outside a bit. Unfortunately, they had some staffing issues, so we couldn’t ride the train, but otherwise it’s nice to see all the historic machines.
YaGeBu K — Google review
What can i say except TRAINs. If you like them that is the place to go. On special days there is a tour with a train. Bring your own food and drinks😉.
Matthias H — Google review
Historical museum. You need about 30 minutes max to go through all but its very interesting. Description is also in english. The ticket costs 9,50 euros.
Αγνή Β — Google review
Very interesting railway museum located in a preserved maintenance facility. The exhibits include a wide range of German railway equipment, many of them consisting of a representative selection of steam engines. The feeling of being on an active old marshalling yard is preserved by the train rides on the adjoining line and the many preserved buildings and facilities. A must for railfans.

The museum features an impressive 71.4-metre headframe that was relocated from a Dortmund mine, complete with a viewing platform offering stunning views. Adventurous souls can explore 2.
Really interesting museum! The underground section was the highlight – very well-maintained, safe, and gives you a real feel of what mining was like. You can see a lot of mining technology and learn about its history in Germany. Everything is well organized and informative. The staff speaks English, making the experience accessible for international visitors. Definitely worth a visit if you're in Bochum!
Tadeas “ — Google review
If you are in or have been in the mining industry or want to learn more about the mining industry and what keeps our lights on and our lives as rich as they are, this is a must visit. The underground tour is informative and immersive in it detail of the transformation of the world of underground mining from its humble hand dug beginning to it’s automated and mechanical current reality. The museum above ground with its interactive models and displays is incredibly well done.
Johnny K — Google review
Great to have more understanding of mining history, machineries and equipment in Germany. Also, understand the largest mining district, Ruhr Area and population development from 300,000 in 1820 to 5.7 million in 1961. Very informative and worth to spend several hours.
Cordelia H — Google review
An excellent museum with an amazing recreation of a mine that takes you through the ages of mining. Once you've finished the mine tour there is a huge museum and it can take you 4 to 5 hours to get through it all. There are documentaries to watch, interactive exhibits, an amazing cafe, and clean toilets throughout the museum. The Mining Museum is setup for German and English speaking visitors.
Retro B — Google review
A very unique and interesting experience. The visitor's mine tour was fun and informative. Would definitely recommend visiting this museum. The tour was only available in german but we were offered booklets with english explanations about all the equipments. The audio tour wasn't available when we went. The exhibition on hard coal and miners livelihood was very well done. Learnt a lot about miners and how they contributed to this region of germany.
Kalpha R — Google review
Great place to visit. The guides were amazing and spoke in German and English. Gave a real sense of what mining was like when the mine was in operation. Second time I visited. I highly recommend it.
Chris P — Google review
Interesting museum about the coal mining and the society around in Germany. Don‘t miss a guided tour through the show mine, it gives you a feeling of being a miner in an authentic surrounding.
Uwe D — Google review
The visit starts with a lengthy exploration of a coal mine under the museum. There are hundreds (?) of metres of tunnels on two levels open to the visitor. The displays are extensive and excellent. Equipment from different periods is presented. After the tunnels, a lift then takes the visitor to the top of the winch tower for great views, finally returning to the "normal" part of the museum. Fascinating, world class. Well worth a visit.

The whole hike was a vibe because of Autumn. We visited chinese garden and it was like entering into a new other world. Simply amazing. Children would love place. Well maintained, clean, calm, awesome views

Very pretty garden maintained by the RUB. I enjoyed the walk all through. The entire garden is downhill. So it takes more strain to reach back than expected.
Navadeep D — Google review
It was a nice place to visit. However seeing part of the Chinese house was temporary closed due to vulgar activities of previous visitors was so sad. I wish it can be renovated soon.
Turkish C — Google review
Super cute botanical garden with every single plant being labeled. The Chinese garden as well as the greenhouses with all the cactuses were the highlight. Really well taken care of, big space. Loved it!!
Flóra M — Google review
Excitingly beautiful garden with various exotic plants around the world and exhibits (sometimes have to pay or donate for a few euros) Entrance to the garden and green houses are free.
Sandra S — Google review
It's a great place to take your friend and family. They have several exhibits covering Savannah, Australia, south east Asia etc. The green houses are climate controlled and every one of them are different. They are meticulously maintenaned by the botanists in the university. There is a nice cafeteria if you need a break; a lot to see. All the trees and plants are labeled for your convenience. I did not see a guided tour as such.
Abhishek D — Google review
We enjoyed being there, we found pepper and cactus gardens the most impressive. There are many plants to see. Chinese garden is well decorated and we saw fish in this garden. Parking place and entrance are free, it is worth seeing there.
Sibel Y — Google review
Lovely little oasis of calm. Great for a nice walk with lots to see. The Chinese garden is beautiful. The three themed (rain forest, desert, savanna) hot houses are well laid out and planted. Good access although could be difficult in parts for wheel chair users as some of the ramps are overgrown.

Entry for the permanent exhibition was free and the temporary exhibition was affordable as well. Lots of abstract art which isn't exactly my style but can't knock it down when it's free. 60-90mins is a good amount of time to budget.
Yannick D — Google review
Beautiful museum with lots to see which is a short walk from the centre of Bochum. The permanent collection is beautifully presented. Concentrates on artists who lived and worked in Germany. Rather a dour collection. Interesting contemporary artists on show.

Concert hall
Nestled in the heart of Bochum's Stahlhausen district, Jahrhunderthalle stands as a remarkable testament to industrial history and cultural evolution. Originally constructed in 1902 for the Düsseldorf Industrial and Commercial Exhibition, this expansive venue has undergone several transformations over the years. Once serving as a blower machine hall for steel production, it now boasts an impressive area of 8,900 square meters dedicated to hosting a diverse array of events.
Historic site, stunning place for theatre and music and even amazing for the occasional dance party or rave. This 19th century manufacturing facility was once the German Expo Pavilion in Paris and was transported back to Bochum, today it serves as a multi purpose place for events. Located in a nice park with a beautiful bridge and a lot of industrial flair this place isn't to be missed.
Jörg L — Google review
Part of the industrial heritage tour in NRW (Ruhrgebied) and this building belongs to the same heritage of many sites still existing. I think it is very wise to preserve coal and steel factories and mines as much as possible, as it tells a story and shows history why and how it was done, also the good, bad and ugly parts. Also reuse of parts in/of buildings and factories for creativity innovation and culture makes it an unique experience.

Die Jahrhunderthalle ist wirklich sehr schön, sie bieten auch immer sehr schöne Veranstaltungen an auf jedenfall Besuchen. PROJECTS JAHRHUNDERTHALLE BOCHUM MAIN VENUE FOR THE RUHRTRIENNALE The former Gas Power Centre of the cast steel company „Bochumer Verein für Bergbau und Gußstahlfabrikation“, an industrial listed building from the year 1903, was reconstructed at the beginning of the millennium to a concert hall and extended by a large foyer and a cloakroom building. The historic construction could be sensitively toughened by means of continually cambered cables. The installation of a structural heating screed provided intelligent strengthening for the basement slabs. The new building construction of steel was abutted on an old external wall and suspended via the toughened cables on the existing construction. The extension of this protected, sophisticated structure with almost fully utilised components required an extremely cautious distribution of the additional forces in the old structure. DIETGER WEISCHEDE COMPANY FOUNDER Thanks to the ingenious structural framework planning, only a few parts of the old structure had to be strengthened. This resulted not only in a very economical solution, but also appealed especially because of the barely recognisable intrusion in the old, listed basic structure of the building. The Jahrhunderthalle Bochum is the main venue for the international cultural festival „Ruhrtriennale“ since the completion of the reconstruction in 2003 CLIENT LEG NORDRHEIN-WESTFALEN ARCHITECT PETZINKA PINK ARCHITEKTEN, DÜSSELDORF LOCATION BOCHUM, GERMANY COMPLETION 2003 AWARDS DEUTSCHER STAHLBAUPREIS 2004 - AUSZEICHNUNG BALTHASAR NEUMANNPREIS 2004 - ENGERE WAHL BDA AUSZEICHNUNG GUTER BAUTEN 2004

If you're looking for an exciting adventure, "Escape Room Köln - The Great Escape" is a fantastic choice! This venue offers a unique and immersive experience with thoughtfully designed themes that truly enhance the challenge. Visitors have praised the medium difficulty of rooms like Todliche Wolken, making it perfect for both beginners and seasoned escape artists. The atmosphere is welcoming, clean, and filled with friendly staff who are always ready to assist you.
Nice people, good atmosphere, clean, overall a good experience. We did the “Tödliche Wolken“ Room and difficulty medium is fitting. Price is also okay. Would recommend!
Oliver H — Google review
We did the newest room, which still has several bugs in it. The atmospheric elements are excellent, but there is no searching for items or locks - everything involves codes and switches and the like. The operator gave us a 50% discount for the troubles with the room, and I understand that the other rooms are much better. "Tödliche Wolken" is currently only available in German, and requires a high level of language proficiency - after finishing the room, we realized that only one is us had really understood the plot that was lined out in the opening recording.

Zoo
Zoos & Aquariums
The well-known animal sanctuary houses a variety of wildlife species from different parts of the world, including flamingos and seals. Additionally, its high-tech aquarium features impressive exhibits with a focus on fossils. Despite its compact size, the park provides an excellent opportunity for families with young children to explore nature and learn about animals up close. However, it is worth noting that some cages were empty during the visit. Improvements could be made to indicate when certain animals are not present in the park or aquarium.
Brilliant place to visit with children. The zoo is rather small but we had a great time. We stayed from 3-7pm until they closed. My daughter enjoyed the playground very much and she enjoyed watching the zoo keeper feeding different animals, which she was constantly doing throughout the day 😂 And we had dinner at the restaurant next to the zoo. You literally sit by the flamingos 🦩 very pleasant experience.
Hui ( — Google review
Nice place. They sure take care of the animals there. The reception staff speaks only German, but we found all of the information online. The toilets are very dirty. They are close to the birds' cages and really smell bad miles away.
I D — Google review
It is really a nice place for a family to spend 2-3 fun hours. It is not an exciting zoo, but it is good for children between 3 to 7 and their parents to have a lovely day there. It has penguin, seal, and several cute and tiny animals that worth to see and take photos with them. Also, it has several tiny aquarium within its fossilium part which we like it
Mohsen A — Google review
A mini but, in my opinion, perfectly designed Zoo. Well-kept vivariums and enclosures. The animals also show that they are given great care. They all look better than in many larger zoos. You will be able to walk around everything without rushing for an hour. You can also eat typical fast food inside. There are plenty of parking spaces nearby - free and paid. In my opinion, ticket prices are low and perfect in relation to the quality. I recommend.
Bartosz M — Google review
For Monday 11:00 it was pretty full. 8 euros the ticket for adults. It's not really big, we needed about an hour to walk all of it. I think it's 3 km. Many cute animals to see and something to eat with good prices. We ate 2 bratwurst with bread and one waffel and we paid 9 euros. The only think i didn't like it's that the animals in water where not clean. And in the aquarium too.
Αγνή Β — Google review
Nice small Zoo with limited number of animals with small children playing area.
Farwa A — Google review
Inside is much bigger than it looks from the outside! Many different species from all over the world. It was a good to spend a day closer to nature. One note: there were about 20% of cages that were empty, or at least the animal was not inside. It would be better if such place were marked that the fish or animal is not inside
Arslan G — Google review
We had a lovely day here, we spent a lot of time outside with the animals. We seen the seals and penguins being fed, our only issue was we couldn't understand the show as it was only in German.. no English, otherwise it was a great day 😀

I just had a very nice lunch here. The fish piccata with aubergine risotto was excellent, and so was the complimentary bread. They have a decent wine selection as well. The staff was polite and efficient. Prices are quite fair. Highly recommended.

The starters are delicious. Service was good. The ribeye steak looks more like entercote was tender and melts in your mouth. The only major issue that ruined the whole experience is how salty was the sauce, you can get rid of the sauce because the steak was soaked in it. The desert was ok nothing special. The washroom was kitcheny!!
Mohammed A — Google review
Good food in a nice ambience! The staff here speak English as well and were very courteous and friendly. The interior is tasteful but has a very relaxed atmosphere, perfect for a nice night out with family or friends. I ordered the tenderloin steak with a side of grilled vegetables and loved it. Husband ordered the wild salmon but found the sides to be too creamy for his liking. The chocolate mousse with almond brittle and passion fruit was a nice combination.

The mood of the resataurant is modern and very nice. Reasonable price with really nice steak. My favorite place to enjoy the dry aging steak! Other dishes are also good too.

I was with a group so was disappointed with a set menu offering vegan curry or veil schnitzel; both were so so. Some of the steaks being delivered to other tables looked nice. However the starters were nice particularly the prawn wrapped in stringy potato and garlic mayo, yummy..

Austrian restaurant
Nestled in the charming Bochum Tierpark, Restaurant Franz Ferdinand offers a delightful taste of Austria without the need for a passport. This elegant eatery boasts a lovely park terrace where you can savor traditional dishes like Wiener Schnitzel and Tafelspitz, alongside an impressive selection of Austrian wines. The ambiance reflects its historical roots, making it feel like stepping back in time to an authentic Beisl—a cozy Austrian tavern.
We tried booking online but did not find any tables available for the same, went and asked in person and they managed to reserve a table for us. The service is great. Both waiters that spoke to us were extremely friendly and very professional. The food was extremely good. Some options were available in a gluten free version, which turned out to be the best gluten free Schnitzel i have ever had. The food was authentic and the portions were almost too big ( not for my partner though, he ate all the leftovers and loved every single dish).

Super friendly service and tasty food, they might need a bit of time to serve deserts so make sure to order them 20 minutes in advance. Good portion for the price. We expected more from the pumpkin tartar but overall was tasty!
Duaa Q — Google review
The restaurant Franz Ferdinand, in Bochum, must be listed in the top ten best restaurants in Bochum. The restaurant is a savory dish after another. For the appetizer, I highly recommend the fig and goat cheese salad, it’s beautifully presented and the taste is purely satisfying. My husband ordered the garlic shrimp salad and he seemed to enjoy it. They serve you their homemade bread and red beet spread. My husband ordered their Kaiserschnitzle served with slices of roasted and fried potatoes and a well dressed salad. I ordered the lamb Wienerschnitzel served with a creamy vinegar potato salad and a green salad. The appetizers and the main course were delicious, so we thought just order one dessert for both of us to share. The dessert also didn’t disappoint us, it was tasty but my husband and I were very full so we forcefully finished the dessert. One thing, I must say is that people are allowed to smoke outside and that’s very frustrating to be around when you want to enjoy a nice meal. It would be nice if they prohibited smoking outside as well.

Overhyped by a lot. Mostly, there are no decent restaurants in Bochum, so this is a hip place. In any larger city, they would die. Poor service, arrogant, really think they are something when they are mostly an average restaurant. The food is decent but not more. Attitude is mostly the problem. If you go to actual top places you will be disappointed. If you are a country pumpkin or dont usually dine in top-notch places, you will love it.

Today I had a superb vegan 3-course dinner here. Respect to the kitchen staff! €35,- including two drinks is very reasonable. The courses were well balanced, good size portions and really well prepared. Not just any kitchen can improvise a well balanced vegan dinner. Friendly and quick serving. I'm very happy I went here and I certainly will eat here again.

Restaurant
Café Tucholsky has been a central hub of Bochum's cultural scene for almost three decades, attracting both locals and celebrities from the nearby Schauspielhaus. It has remained popular over the years, especially since the opening of the music center, becoming a go-to spot before or after concerts. The bistro-style kitchen offers a diverse menu with a focus on beef-themed dishes such as burgers and steaks, complemented by an excellent selection of wines.
We booked this place for a conference lunch. The staff was extremely accommodating and professional. Could not have asked for more. Kudos!
Ar P — Google review
Food was okay, but wouldn't go back. It was also insanely warm inside (in August). Feels like they have no ventilation or cooling at all
Marcel T — Google review
I have been to Tucholsky a couple times and i always had a great experience with the food. This time, however, I must say I was disappointed. The lemon risotto was extremely acidy and boring. It was not enjoyable and I would not recommend it.
Leslye D — Google review
It's a nice place to eat and they have a lot of stuff with big portions. Though the food was way too heavy and I had a stomachache afterwards (I ordered Italian scrumbled eggs). One thing I definitely didn't like: the waiter brought us water without asking first and without telling that it would cost 7 euros... The coffee was charged more than it was on the menu. So... I think I'm not coming again despite a lot of good options.

Great breakfast. Loads of smiles from friendly faces working to make you feel welcome. I had a breakfast with no specific expectations, though they were exceeded. I recommend having a meal, any meal. If my breakfast was tasty, then it might just be that loads more on their menu is just as tasty.

Absolutely magnificent place. Plenty of different foods served, although the truth is I come here for the excellent craft beers and it’s probably the best place in town to enjoy them. Very friendly and professional staff, so that’s covered too, but did I mention the delicious craft beer? Especially nice because the interior is lovely as well and outside seating (even though a bit noisier) is equally as pleasant.

The spacious bar area invites guests to enjoy their meals in a vibrant atmosphere while still appreciating the rustic charm of the original structure.
My experience at this typical German restaurant was absolutely fantastic! The authentic atmosphere, combined with delicious food, made for an unforgettable evening. The steak was perfectly cooked and the beer selection was impressive. Compliments to the chef and the staff for the excellent service. Definitely worth 5 stars

Location: centrally located, yet off the main street. Tucked away in the peace of a little alley. Service: Attentive, pleasant and knowledgable! I am still confused about the many varieties of beer. The young lady was able to give me a primer on the key features of each type so that I was able to reach a decision. Very professional and impressive! Vibe: the interior has a warm and cozy atmosphere. Tables of thick slabs of wood, large and medium groups of people chatting away. The house is full of history. The outdoor seats look over a T-crossing with some mild traffic that adds some animation to the scene rather than being disrupting (unless someone honks, but that didn’t happen often). Food: My salad was fresh and the portion was satisfying. Everything is served in proper tableware. Great for colleague groups, friend groups and couples. May not be the best space for young kids if I have to be honest.

Good food! Is in street where you have too many restaurants in downtown. Spring rolls were wrapped in thin rice sheet. It was okay. Without any spices. Souce along with spring roll was good though a bit more sweet than I like. Hot Vietamese tea was available. My colleagues took it and they seems to enjoy it! Too many options for drinks! They had Lassi on menu considering that's not Vietamese! I had Yellow curry with Tofu! Great taste. Service is decent! No Amex accepted.

I have tried to book a table here numerous times and was never successful. I now understand why. This is a very small, intimate restaurant that offers top quality food by friendly knowledgeable servers. It is expensive but the price is definately worth it. I would additionally recommend the wine pairing the selection is very well thought through and there wasn't a bad wine among them. It wouldn't have surprised me if this was a Michelin star restaurant. The best restaurant in bochum in my opinion.

Easy to find. Wheelchair accessible. We made a reservation for 10 people two days before and it was no problem. Drinks was served quickly after arrival. Starters were served in a timely manner and there was a pleasant break between starter and main course. The food was great, all of the meals were tasty. I can recommend the tartar as a starter. Good food is a little expensive, but not unreasonable for the quality and quantity. We drank from their beer, which was nice and well presented. Amazing find. We went here on a whim for a late dinner, because that's one of the few restaurants in the area that are open late, and were surprised to find a really nice ambiance and spectacularly good Italian food. The menu offers a lot of variety, certainly a few levels above the standard, run-off-the-mill Italian fare you find in many other Italian restaurants around here. The service was a little bit slow, but otherwise very pleasant and attentive. We'll most definitely be coming back!

Incredibly good Italian cuisine, perfect place for dinner before the Starlight Express show! Extremely tasty dishes, with craft beers and wines from Italy. The friendly owner of Trattoria Momo came out and greeted us and our kids warmly. The food was so delicious. The airport operates 24 hours a day, offering convenient access to the vibrant city of Cologne. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and diverse cultural offerings, Cologne is often referred to as the "other gay capital of Germany." The city boasts a unique architectural landscape, blending historic charm with modern amenities.
Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is a top-notch travel hub that blends efficiency with comfort. The terminal is well-designed with clear signage, making navigation easy. CGN offers excellent lounge options, a range of dining and shopping choices, and free Wi-Fi throughout. Security checks are efficient, parking is convenient, and public transportation to Cologne and Bonn is seamless. With modern facilities and a customer-oriented approach, CGN provides a pleasant travel experience, making it a great choice for business or leisure. 👍✈️...

A relatively compact airport with an unusual layout insofar as the check in, security to gates process goes but very efficiently ran. When the boarder control queue got long for the non-EU passport holders they directed people to use the ‘EU only’ booths too. There is a good mix of places to eat and drink but mainly after security and the terminal itself was very contemporary with big windows overlooking the airside and lots of natural light. Duty free shop is fairly small but had a good selection.

One of the best Airports that I've been to, I've played Kicker with random people in Suits, Toilets are clean, from getting off the train till the gate can be done in under 70 minutes. Amazingly engineered signs, that can be followed without thinking much. Really good small airport, the following needs to be added however: - Water Dispencers - Smart Gates! Please activate them.

✈️ Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) – Honest Review 🏢 Overview Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is one of Germany’s smaller international airports, situated about 15 km from both Cologne (Köln) and Bonn. It's a hub for low-cost carriers like Eurowings and Ryanair, making it a budget-friendly gateway to Europe. --- ✅ Pros 1. Efficient and Manageable Size The airport is compact, which means short walking distances between gates, check-in, and security. Security checks are generally faster than major hubs like Frankfurt or Munich. 2. Great for Budget Airlines A popular base for Eurowings, Ryanair, and Wizz Air. Plenty of low-cost flights to destinations across Europe like Italy, Spain, UK, Poland, and more. 3. Direct Train Connection Excellent rail connectivity from the terminal via the Köln/Bonn Flughafen Bahnhof (train station). You can reach Cologne central station in 15–20 minutes and Bonn in about 30 minutes. 4. Open 24/7 One of the few airports in Germany that operate 24/7, which is ideal for early or late flights. 5. Free Wi-Fi & Basic Amenities Offers free Wi-Fi, ATMs, currency exchange, baby care facilities, and a few duty-free shops. Small lounges available for frequent flyers and business-class travelers. --- ❌ Cons 1. Limited Food Options Few restaurants or cafes, especially late at night. Limited variety compared to larger international airports—expect basic fast food, bakery, and snacks. 2. Lack of Comfortable Seating Seating areas near gates can be cramped and uncomfortable, especially for longer layovers. Not ideal for sleeping overnight. 3. Not Ideal for Long-Haul Flights Primarily a short-haul airport. Limited intercontinental or long-haul routes. If you're connecting to Asia, the US, or Africa, you’ll still need to go through a major hub. 4. Old Facilities in Some Parts Terminal 2 feels dated, with fewer charging points or modern rest areas. Cleanliness can vary depending on time of day and airline traffic. --- 🌍 Good for Europe Travel? Absolutely. CGN is: Budget-friendly with lots of low-cost European routes. Well-located for exploring western Germany and Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg). Connected by train, so you can land and be in a major city like Cologne, Bonn, Düsseldorf, or even Brussels quickly. If you're a student, backpacker, or casual traveler looking to explore Europe affordably, Cologne Bonn is a great option. --- 🧳 Quick Tips Arrive 2 hours early—even though it’s small, morning and evening can get busy. Use the RE or S-Bahn to avoid expensive taxis. Bring snacks or food, especially if traveling at night. Great choice for weekend trips or budget getaways.
Vanshaj B — Google review
They say Germans are the most precise people, but Cologne airport proves the exact opposite. The worst travel experience I have ever had anywhere in the world. Not only is it nearly impossible to fly from Berlin to Vienna, but if you have a layover in Cologne, they’ve set it up so that you have to run around the entire airport, go through security all over again, and throw away even that overpriced €4 bottle of water from Berlin airport. Except for a few decent people at security, it was total ignorance, shrugs and laughter right in your face. I only made my flight because some kind people let me skip ahead in the line.
Ivan Ľ — Google review
If you haven’t walked today don’t worry this airport will make you walk, and this wlll be llooooooonnnnngggggggg So bring some patients Especially at the first police control you will need to wait up to 20 min maybe also longer Duty free shops are everywhere but a simple water 3.50Eurosssssss
M. K — Google review
Well, honestly, I had a good travel experience through Bonn Cologne airport. First of all, we booked our parking spot online ahead of time, and everything went smoothly. The check-in desk staff were very professional and precise. The passport check went out smoothly as well. On my way back to Germany, the officer informed us that the residents of Germany could pass through the smart gates using the residency permit card, which helped me get past the long queue of passport check.
Aaya K — Google review
Cologne Bonn Airport promotes itself as environmentally friendly, but the reality is the opposite. There is no option to return deposit bottles and get your money back. The only bins available before the security check are labeled as “donation boxes.” Passengers are practically forced to donate their bottles instead of reclaiming their deposit. This system is unfair and hypocritical. The airport hides behind so-called “eco” slogans while keeping the unclaimed deposits. Real environmental responsibility means giving passengers the option to recycle and get their money back, not forcing them to donate under the illusion of doing something good. The so-called “Duty Free” in this airport is another illusion. Within the European Union there are no customs borders or real tax exemptions, so a genuine duty free cannot exist. Nevertheless, products are sold at inflated prices as if they were tax-free, even though this advantage only applies outside the EU. Many items are more expensive than in regular stores or online. It is a marketing trick designed to mislead passengers under the image of a modern and international airport. Overall, this airport focuses more on profit and image than on honesty. Shiny stores, fake environmental care, fake duty free, and zero transparency. A place that looks modern on the outside but treats passengers as if they were naive. A disappointment for anyone who values fairness and respect for travelers!

Duesseldorf Airport

International airport
Airport
Düsseldorf Airport is a 3-terminal airport with 2 train stations and local buses, offering guided behind-the-scenes tours. During the winter season, Dusseldorf's Christmas markets open for four weeks, transforming the city into an enchanting land with seven unique markets. Additionally, travelers have the option to fly to Weeze, served by low-cost airlines like Ryanair and located 70 km from Dusseldorf.
Great airport. Very well structured. You get huge waiting halls, great arrival zone, perfect departure area. Awesome shops. Very easy to navigate. But quite awkward passport control for people flying outside of EU. Very very quick these days security check but your bags will definitely go through screening. 4 flights - 4 times had my stuff diverted for manual check 😂 If you have chance, fly through Düsseldorf. Very good spot. Plus Düsseldorf is awesome city of fashion.

Well structured and purpose-driven airport for short and mid-to-long range flights. I have had the possibility to easily go through security with no wait time and the gates information are clear enough for frequent fliers. Food shops could improve in price/quality combination but overall positive feedback!

The Duesseldorf airport was easy to access, whether by bus or train, which made the journey very convenient. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout. The airport itself is medium-sized, not too big to get lost in, but not too small either. It had everything I needed without being overwhelming. Overall, a smooth and pleasant experience.

Düsseldorf airport is actually pretty well structured. Security was smooth and quick, barely any waiting time, which was a relief. What could be better though – the prices in the shops felt a bit much. I know it’s common in airports, but still, could be more reasonable. And the main issue for me was the chaos at the departure area. People were just stopping anywhere, no clear flow or control – that part definitely needs improvement.

Not sure how this airport intends to compete or even attract more travelers.. upon arrival the baggage takes hours, it’s as if if this big A380 arrived unexpectedly on time! And then upon leaving the lines for security expand all the way to the check in counters. This has been happening several times.. Düsseldorf get your act together you do represent the country…I still like how compact this airport is though

The airport is fairly new but not a huge hub like Frankfurt. Layout is modern and spacious. It's fairly clean though less towards the railway station. I was annoyed as I had to use stairs twice to go to the restroom while other airports have it on the same level. The coffee and food option at arrival is minimal and underwhelming. Staff is trying and it's just about enough for a breakfast bite but nothing more.

I recently spent time at Düsseldorf Airport and had such a smooth travel experience that I’d fully recommend it to anyone flying through. From the moment I arrived, everything felt intuitive and well-organized. Navigation between Terminals A, B, and C is seamless: signs are clear, walkways are direct, and even crossing between terminals is simple thanks to elevated corridors. Once through security, it’s easy to move between gates without confusion. Security and check-in moved fast. Despite moderate traffic, lines rarely felt long and staff generally operated efficiently. Afterward, there’s no shortage of food and shopping: from kiosks and cafés to duty‑free stores and even a small supermarket in the arrivals level—plenty of variety to suit business or leisure needs. The design is modern and clean. Seating areas are well spaced, charging stations are readily available, and free Wi‑Fi works reliably throughout. As a bonus for plane enthusiasts, there’s a visitor terrace where you can watch landings and takeoffs—simple yet enjoyable, with great views across the apron. Lounges add real value if you have the opportunity to access them. I spent time in the Open Sky Lounge in Pier C—it’s bright, calm, and recently refreshed. There’s a decent buffet, complimentary drinks, quiet zones, and showers if you want to freshen up before boarding. For travelers in Pier B, the Hugo Junkers Lounge delivers solid food offerings and an apron-facing ventilation-filled interior. Transport connections are a highlight. There are two rail stations: the S‑bahn at the terminal for regional connections and the main station a short ride away via the SkyTrain offering intercity and ICE trains. The SkyTrain is automatic and fast—handy if you’re heading into Düsseldorf or onward in Germany. Taxi and rideshare pickup zones are next to the terminal exit; just be mindful that airport-to-city-center fares can sometimes feel higher than expected if unpaid extra charges pop up—using an app‑based service helps avoid that. Overall, Düsseldorf Airport feels efficient, modern, and thoughtful. It recently won “Best Regional Airport in Europe” at the Skytrax World Airport Awards—a well-deserved recognition in my opinion. My experience felt stress-free from bag drop to boarding, with helpful staff, good amenities, reliable Wi‑Fi, and easy transfer options. If you need a regional hub in Europe that runs like clockwork and offers both functional and comfortable services, Düsseldorf Airport delivers.

A modern airport with easy access to the city. The SkyTrain monorail connects the terminals to the main train station quickly. The station is clean but bathrooms can get busy sometimes. Overall, a convenient airport for travel in the region.

Dortmund Airport

International airport
Airport
Regional airport
Dortmund Airport offers a range of dining options and a duty-free store for passengers with boarding passes. It is easily accessible from major nearby cities and provides transportation services like the Airport Shuttle and Airport Express. However, some travelers suggest eating before arriving as there are limited restaurant choices. The airport's security system is described as old-fashioned compared to larger airports. Despite being small and mainly serving domestic flights, it is considered convenient and discreet by visitors.
Clean, small and easy to reach your gate for departure. You have McDonald’s and Lidl nearby the airport.

This is the worst airport you could imagine. And the main reason isn’t that it’s small, but that the staff simply don’t care about optimizing the number of flights, their timing, speed, or the workload of the security check lines. There are plenty of opportunities for optimization, but they clearly don’t care. 1. Spread flights out over time so there aren’t 2–3 departures every 10 minutes? No. 2. Optimize staff performance? Why bother. 3. Add more security check lines? Nobody needs that. Horrible. If you need to fly from here, make sure to arrive at least 4 hours before departure, because 3 hours might not be enough — and that’s without checked baggage. If you trust Wizz Air’s recommended arrival time, you’ll most likely miss your flight. Just take a look at the time they suggest. Speechless.

The worst airport I have ever been to. There’s nowhere to sit and nowhere to stay in the departure terminal. I wonder who gave this “airport” a certificate for international flights
Andrii K — Google review
This is not an airport, this is an absolute disgrace. The most rude, asinine staff I ever seen working at an airport, hostile attitude, zero English, unprofessional to say the least. They will start touching you without notice and speaking exclusively German, I repeatedly said I don’t speak German and they just started shouting (in German, ofc!). And unfortunately, that’s not all. The dirtiest toilet I ever experienced at an airport, with smell of urine that reaches the gates area even. The layout is terrible, no seats available (prepare to stand for a long time, even hours) and obviously inadequate for people with disabilities, this place is stuck in ‘60s perhaps. I decided to travel from here as it was 100 euro cheaper than traveling from elsewhere, next time I won’t bother and I will happily spend more rather than transit again in this disgrace of a place.

The staff are genuinely polite and helpful, but the airport itself is surprisingly small — and not just in size. There are hardly enough tables to sit at, and some tables don’t even have chairs nearby. It would make a huge difference if there were at least one proper place to sit down and have a meal. I’ve been to many airports in Germany, but this one still manages to surprise me — and not in a good way.
Berk — Google review
It’s a joke, not a real Airport. You reaaaaaly should be here 3 hours before your gates, because u cant pass safety in any shorter time. It’s small and surely takes more wizzair flights than it can proces, so - money for the Company, loads of problems for any passenger
Szymon S — Google review
For a small airport this one is super slow and the staff is not friendly. They wont allow priority to passengers who are late, and on the screen they are not showing boarding status so you miss your flight. One star 👎
Frenkie F — Google review
Absolutely the worst airport I've ever been to. And I'm not even talking about the lack of seats or slow checks. Or dirty toilets. Or the staff that doesn't speak English AT THE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT 🙃 But the fact that everyone who works here is incredibly rude - from the woman letting you enter the security checks to the one working in Duty free. But the last drop was the woman at the security checks who suddenly without saying anything, started lifting my sweater and touching me under it where I had my t-shirt. I said I didn't understand what she quietly said in German but she didn't care and just continued touching me, and made me feel so so uncomfortable. Meanwhile another security check guy started doing the same to my husband, also ignoring him asking speaking English, until he literally put his hand in his jeans?? I wish there was an administration or anyone I could complain about it when this happened, I would gladly report these employees. This is not normal. I've never seen anything like this.
