Le interessanti testimonianze di vita mostrano, nelle collezioni etnografiche, come l’ambiente ne abbia forgiato le abitudini: il relativo isolamento di un tempo, le particolari condizioni climatiche, insieme alla peculiare identità della comunità quale isola linguistica germanofona, favorirono un sistema di vita frugale e pressoché autosufficiente, favorendo lo sviluppo della cosiddetta ‘cultura del legno’. Ne sono testimoni eloquenti le tipologie architettoniche della vallata, cui è dedicata un’apposita sezione. Immagini d’epoca ritraggono la popolazione di Sappada e in alcune vetrine sono esposti capi di abbigliamento da lavoro e della festa, da uomo e da donna. Nella parte centrale del museo ci si addentra nella vita domestica sappadina: vi sono raccolti oggetti di uso quotidiano degli ambienti come la cucina, il corridoio, il tinello e la camera, i quali non sono stati ricostruiti perché è possibile visitarli nella Casa museo della Civiltà Contadina, il secondo museo di Sappada. La sala maggiore ospita gli strumenti delle attività agro-silvo-pastorali e artigianali della semplice ma dura esistenza condotta dai sappadini: dal boscaiolo si passa alla sezione dedicata alla neve, dal pastore alla stalla, al fienile e ai lavori agricoli, dai trasporti alle attività artigianali del carradore, fabbro, falegname e infine al calzolaio, sarto e tessitore.
