The Saffron Monastery, built upon the bones of Shamash 𒀭𒌓 I loved the ancient divine walls of Mor Hananyo, tour guides were really good, but tourist groups are always an annoyance.
There's no public transport here so you must take a taxi or as I have done - you walk around 90 minutes. The monastery stands about 6km along a good but narrow road in the rocky hills east of Mardin. Try to visit on a weekday otherwise there are busloads of tourists as this place is magnificent and extremely popular. It was once the seat of the Syriac Orthodox patriarchate but this has now moved to Damascus. Services in Aramaic are still held here.
A special place with magic ambient and history but it’s worth to stay couple minutes longer, after the crowd of visitors departed, and explore the place in silence. Then the vibe is truly amazing.
Cool Syrian monastery. Can only access as part of a group tour in Turkish. Was built over an assyrian temple you can see the chamber where they used to venerate the sun through a slit in the wall. Worth the visit.
Deyrulzafaran Monastery Deyrulzafaran Monastery is a historical Syriac Orthodox monastery located in Mardin, Turkey. It was founded in the 5th century (around 493 AD) by Mor Şleymun and took its name from the saffron (zafaran) plant in its vicinity. The monastery was one of the important religious centers of the Syriac Church and served as the patriarchate (1160-1932). It existed during the Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods and draws attention with its architectural arched structures, mosaics and stonework. It is still an active monastery today and maintains its importance in terms of religion and tourism.
1500 year old. Full of history and still in use for worshipping so quite unique place. There is 1500 year old pagan worship place. So amazing that they put about 20 stones each 1.5 tons on the roof without any adhesive. I was stocked that how they did it. They used 45 degrees 📐 angled stones. That was on 500 AD. Amazing.
Very beautiful monastery, surely worth a visit. Visits are all with a local guide (only in Turkish) but you can get the history of the place on Wikipedia. You can reach it by taxi only, about 400 TL (in July 2025 = less than 10 Euros).
Very peaceful place. Still an active monastery, so a student guides you during the tour which is really nice because you not only just see the place but also gain a lot of knowledge from it. Thank you 🙏

Awesome place to visit. If in the Mardin area this is a must see. My wife and I spent about 3 hours vising all the sites in Dara (2 cisterns, ancient city, tombs). Day we visited some kids were chasing a mentally challenged adult and throwing rocks at him. The town itself is very dirty and its kind of depressing to see people literally living in structures (using structures loosely) built on top of one of the 2,000 year old cisterns. With all this said still worth visiting. Going between the sites I would suggest driving versus walking.
Exploring the village and cemetery around this archeological site gives full depth to the experience.
Perhaps it wasn't a good idea to visit during peak season and weekend. It's a hard time to walk around to absorb the feeling of the past whilst the crowd sort of making loud noises and can't focus to stay still at one spot. The parking spot was also difficult. However, it was a cool experience and kind a difficult to find toilet.
Great ancient city to visit, short ride from Mardin. The complex is divided into 4 different sites. Loved the two cisterns.
Definitely must see ancient town! Dara, an important East Roman fortress city dating back year of 530. Ancient city is huge and modern town of Dara is now situated on the ruins which are clearly seen. People continue living in ancient city, we can say. Grave area is well kept and welcomes you as a first stop. Necropol, dungeon, and a King Seat is a bit away, in village centre. Anyone visiting Mardin shouldn’t miss this forgettable experience.
Must see and read about. No more comment is needed.
I was amazed by this ruin city where mostly you can find caves carved in the stone. There is alsó a necropolis which is very unique. The site is on a huge area. It is highly recommended!
Visiting Dara when in Mardin should be mandatory. About 35 km to the east of Mardin you find not only ruins of this once strategically important place but also a church carved into a rock with a necropolis. See graves in the walls and through a glass floor myriads of bones in basement floor. Explanation: Dead bodies were buried in the carved bunks in walls. After a few month the meat was absorbed by the lime stone and bones were either given back to the family or thrown into the ground floor. Very hygienic and brainy. Not sure if people who still bury their dead relatives in a bag, awaiting the worms from inside, could become familiar with this idea. I'm bowing for them.

Formerly a medrese, this historic building features local Artuklu architecture & is open for tours.

Throughout its history Kasimye Madrasah was not just a religious educational institution, but also a center for scientific research. Natural sciences such as astronomy and maths were taught here as well as philosophy and literature. This multidisciplinary approach made the madrasah the most prestigious one in the region. A legend tells of the tragic death of madrasah's founder Sultan Kasim Pasha. According to the story, after he had been murdered his sister spreaded blood from her brother's shirt upon the walls. Even today, it is said, stains resembling traces of blood appear, adding mystical aura to the building.
Kasimiye Medresesi is an ancient and historic site with incredible charm. It’s a place where history and beauty blend perfectly, offering an amazing view from its elevated position. ➕ Ancient, historical significance — one of the oldest medreses in the region Stunning panoramic view from the hilltop, overlooking the city Peaceful atmosphere, perfect for exploring and reflecting Well-preserved architecture showcasing the region’s rich heritage ➖ Not much to do beyond exploring the medrese itself Can get a bit crowded during peak tourist seasons ❤️: Yes, a must-visit if you appreciate history, culture, and breathtaking views!
Kasymiye Madrasah or Kasym Pasha Madrasah is a large madrasah in Mardin, Turkey. The main building has a rectangular shape. The entrance is through an ornate portal from the south. There is a swimming pool in the courtyard. The source of the water is a funnel in the wall, which symbolizes birth. The water from the pool flows through a narrow gap, which symbolizes death and sirat (in the Islamic faith, a narrow bridge in hell leading to heaven). Classrooms surround the pool. The classroom doors are intentionally low to ensure that students will bow respectfully to their teachers when they enter.
Visiting Kasımiye Madrasah was a truly enriching experience. The moment you step inside, you're transported to a different era, where architecture, spirituality, and history come together beautifully. The stonework, the intricate designs, and the symbolic water stream flowing through the courtyard reflect deep Islamic knowledge and culture. The peaceful ambiance and panoramic view of Mardin city make it an unforgettable stop. It’s not just a historical site – it’s a place that speaks to the soul. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Mardin, especially those who appreciate Islamic art, architecture, and deep-rooted heritage.
The upper levels are not open to public, which would have been better, but overall it’s a cool place to take cool pictures, brides come here for photo shoots
Wonderful place to be during sunset for its colors, reflections and shades. And the view/sunset over Mesopotamia is incredible too. When you want to see all, including upstairs/balcony than you have to be there before 4pm. Upstairs closes at 4pm. Depending on photo shoots times can vary but round 5pm - 5.30pm everybody has to leave.
It is a historical place if u r are in the region definitely stop by

The Grand Mosque in Mardin is a stunning architectural masterpiece that transports you to a different time and place. The intricate design and historical significance of this mosque are truly awe-inspiring. It's a must-visit for anyone exploring Mardin. The peaceful atmosphere and rich history make it a unique experience. Highly recommended.
The Mardin Grand Mosque, which is a symbol of Mardin with its segmented dome and minaret, is one of the architectural examples of the Artuqid Period. According to records, it was built with two minarets. The inscription on the square base of the mosque's single minaret today gives the date of construction as 1176. However, the minaret today was built in a new and eclectic style in 1888-1889. Some Syriac writers say that the church was converted into a mosque. Even if the structure was not converted from a church, it is likely that there was an old church on the site.
Built in year 1100, the architecture is magnificent. The Masjid is Located in a central position in Upper Mardin as the people of Mardin, local people call it. It is a good example of “Artuklu” period architecture and made of pure cut stone. The mosque dome is a segmented structure created with the external track technology. Years later, this technique became the traditional Mardin technique.
I would like to recommend Emirhan as a young, local tour guide. He is about thirteen, I believe, and gave us full information on the mosque, the city, and other historical buildings.
Nice serene place, solid "romanesque-like" architecture. A little more informatiin about the history would have been nice.
A piece of city history, one of the oldest. The minaret dominates the view from far away. I suggest to approach this beautiful and full of atmosphere mosque from the narrow streets of the old bazaar.
One of the epic Mosque in Mardin. It also has the hair of Prophet Mohammad PBUH’s beard preserved.
Built in 1199 by Artuk dynasty, it is by far one of the oldest in Turkey. It also equally encloses an islamic school within its compound and a compartment in wall of the mosque holding the blessed Holy Hair of Hazrat Maulana Muhammed Mustafa SAW. The architecture of the mosque is quite wonderful and its environment serene and inspiring.

For my love for Mardin and its history, I have come to love this museum a lot because it has captured almost all and everything Mardin. A careful and detailed tour of this museum in just some few hours, helps take you throughout Mardin chronologically and in modernity. The christian Mardin, Islamic Mardin, cultural Mardin, industrial and occupational Mardin, etc. Moreover, entrance is free for student group with a teacher. I most seriously recommend this wonderful museum and it is surely one of the must-see of Turkey.
Really interesting museum, where we spent 2 hours to get through all their material. We learned a lot about history of Mardin area, local life and customs, food, crafts... good descriptions in English and thus probably the place where we learned the most about this region. Very interesting and I highly recommend!
Great museum, very modern and informative. It gives you an overview of the history of Mardin. Must be visited along with the archaeological museum.
The museum is just one room. The staff is totally incompetent: I showed them my ICOM card and they said I have to pay. I showed them written in front of the ticket office that ICOM members are free. They have no idea how to do their job, I had to teach them who has or not free entrance. Then they lock the toilets only for themselves and don't let tourists to use a toilet while at the museum. Unprofessional.
Wonderful. Housed in a beautifully restored building. İnteresting collection and exhibition. Accessible to anyone. Air conditioned. Places to seat and rest. A must see.
The worst museum I’ve ever visited. Terrible content for the price and it offers almost nothing. They don’t even display original pieces, just images of them. Instead, visit Mardin Museum to get better understanding of the city and its history.
When we landed in Mardin, our hotel concierge suggested we start at this museum, to get our bearings. She was right. This relatively new museum, run by one of Turkey's biggest conglomerates, Sabanci Holding, was a good starting point to understand the history of Mardin. This is Mesopothamia. -- where civilzation began. There is so many layers of culture and history that really, one must read volumes before arriving here. If not, then the Sabanci musum is the perfect 'summary' to understand what you'll be experiencing in this city over the course of your visit. Do pay the minimal entrance fee ( I think it was less than 2 usd) and take a quick tour. The building itself is gorgeous, and the depth of information shared is very useful. I wish I had taken more photographs, but I was unsure if I was allowed - hence the poor quality of what I have to share. Yet, I will still share for the sake of sharing. Enjoy
This is the place if you want to summarize Mardin history, its nit to big, but all the information provide is in English

Zinciriye Medresesi is worth returning to again and again — the view is absolutely stunning and makes every visit unforgettable. ➕ Incredible panoramic view of Mardin and the surrounding area Rich historical significance — one of the most important medreses in the region Beautifully restored architecture, showcasing ancient craftsmanship Peaceful and perfect for photography or simply soaking in the scenery ➖ Can be crowded during peak hours Some areas might feel a bit too touristy for those seeking solitude ❤️: Yes, definitely worth revisiting for the breathtaking views and historical experience!
Incredible view and building. Summer hours are until 18h. It was fun to observe all the wedding photo shoots. We saw about 6 couples!
Beautiful madrasa with a scenic terrace overlooking everything. We went around 16:30 and the terrace was still open.
A lovely old school built by sultan isa at 1385 very impressive architecture the tickets is 50TL per person i would highly recommend visiting if you are in mardin
Simply breathtaking; from the terrace, you get a fantastic view of the landscape and surroundings—simply magical. The only thing I find a shame is that some areas of such a historic and enchanting building are not very clean or are being used as storage! In my opinion, they could raise the entrance fee and keep the entire complex cleaner and tidier. Jewelry is sold in some places. In my opinion, the sales outlets would be better outside the site than inside the building itself. This does take away some of the magic. Overall, definitely worth seeing! Highly recommended! I hope the entire old town never loses its current flair and charm.
View of the whole city, you won’t regret spending time here
It closes at 5:00 PM, the entrance fee is 50 turkish lira. Tea is available in the first section of the madrasa, though it is slightly more expensive than in cafés.
Nice picturesque place. 1. Parents should watch their children close for safety. 2. City councel SHOULD at least LIMIT entry of cars in old city!

You can only watch this historic place from a distance as it is currently being occupied by the military. Mardin is everything civilization and this castle is one of its historical cornerstone.
The view from Mardin Fortress in the evening is absolutely beautiful, offering a stunning panoramic view of the city and surrounding landscape. ➕ Incredible view, especially at sunset when the city lights up A great spot for photographers and those who enjoy scenic views A historical site with lots of cultural significance ➖ Currently closed for visitors as it is a military base No access to the fortress at the moment Might be disappointing for those expecting to explore the site
Mardin Castle fascinates with its magnificence. Mardin is a city of faith, history, culture, tourism and gastronomy in itself, and a crossroads of civilizations. It embodies many beliefs, cultures and riches. Perhaps Mardin is the city where the color yellow suits best. Mardin is a city that leans its back against steep rocks and faces the vast Mesopotamian plain. This ancient city is a place for viewing during the day and a necklace at night. Mardin is a stop that you can't get enough of, with its historical mosques, mansions, madrassas and churches. It is a mansion that fascinates those who come beyond the stop. Its people, weather and nature are beautiful. Mardin has another feature. Mardin is the city most similar to Jerusalem in the world. If you haven't seen it yet, you've lost a lot.
Mardin Castle is a 3,000 year old defensive fortification in the city of Mardin, Turkey. It is known as the Eagle's Nest. The castle has been used as a military base as part of a NATO agreement and hosts a radar station due to its position 1,000 meters above the Mesopotamian plain.
A well worth hike. You get to see the valley and the surrounding architecture of this place.
Tried to walk all the way up but it's actually some military area. So there is not really a castle or a lookout where people could walk to to overlook the city. We went there at dawn and didn't really feel save, so just dont do it. I've heard that it should become a touristy place, someday. Enjoy (not)
Unfortunately closed but it is so beautiful to see it during the day and especially during the night looming on the city.
It's being used as a military base so closed to the public.

Had the honor to participate in mass with the local suryani orthodox church. Old place seeped in history. Thank you for the locals who are preserving the true culture of Mardin
I give 3 stars because the administration doesn't take care at all of the historic monument. There's a football playground in the courtyard of the church and kids play hitting the ancient walls and inscriptions of the church with the ball. This is how Mardin takes care of it's monuments! Shame!
It’s a pretty church. Quite and peaceful.👍🏻
Was not able to enjoy visiting the church because of a young man following me and my wife around either offering to take photos for money, offering to sell alchohol or to be a guide. Left quickly becaus of this

(Translated by Google) It is like a hidden oasis just below the Mardin central street, a rare beauty among the old Mardin houses. The courtyard of the mosque now consists of a rectangle, as we are accustomed to when visiting Mardin, and there is constantly flowing and fresh water here. The mosque was built on the basis that the faithful believers are closest to God during prayer, as in typical Seljuk architecture, the first row is kept longer and more Muslims share the same taste... Being a little bit inside keeps it away from those who do not know it. The engravings on the inner and outer courtyards of the mosque are wonderful, while the interior is kept equally simple, except for the mihrab, but it still makes you feel its magnificence. It has an imam with a very pleasant voice. Resting with awe during prayer time gives another level of peace.

Saint Hirmiz Chaldean Church, located in the heart of Mardin, is a significant historical and cultural landmark. This Chaldean Catholic Church once served as the Metropolitan cathedral of the Chaldean Catholic Eparchy of Mardin until it lapsed in 1941. The building’s design may date back to the 16th or 17th century. I stumbled upon this beautiful church accidentally as it’s not clearly marked on the map, but it turned out to be one of the most peaceful and captivating places I visited in Mardin. The church has a serene atmosphere, and the interior is filled with interesting religious iconography and delicate details that reflect its history. The statues and decor add a unique charm to the space, offering a quiet retreat from the busy streets outside. It feels like stepping into a sacred piece of history. A must-see for anyone interested in the local culture and history. The entry was 20TL.
It's a Suryanian in church open to worship. Worth to pay a visit while walking the street
"The church, located in the city center, approximately 100 meters east of Şahkulu BeyKonagi, belongs to the Chaldean Catholic community. It was completed between 397-430. It has a domed structure. There are the graves of two Metropolitans in the church. On the graves decorated with beautiful embroideries, two Metropolitans died. "The dates are written. Inside the council chamber, which was added later to the church, a beautifully embroidered fireplace with an Ottoman monogram on it, which is known to have been built in 1902, attracts attention."

Nice one and the oldest in the time that they are not sure about their date back. They told me every Sunday has pray from 3 p.m.
Historical and peaceful place.
A place of God 💓🙏🏼
(Translated by Google) You can add this place to your list of places to visit in Mardin. It is not possible to travel much by car. Historical places are within walking distance of each other. The interior is well-maintained and the staff are attentive. You can examine the books inside, it was not very big inside. There wasn't much crowd when we went. A beautiful place with historical impressions as soon as you enter (Original) Mardin'de gezilecek yerler listesine burayıda ekleye bilirsiniz. Araç ile pek gezmek mümkün değil. İçeriye girer girmez tarihi izlenimlere sahip güzel bir yer

It's located in the heart of old Mardin, within easy reach. You can easily find it on foot. The church's exterior boasts a simple yet impressive architecture. Upon entering, you're greeted by a warm, welcoming, and peaceful atmosphere. The details on the walls and the way the light filters through create a sense of spiritual serenity. What impressed me most was the hospitality and genuine warmth of the people inside. Unlike many churches, here you're not just visiting a historical building, but also a vibrant congregation. They're always willing to engage in conversation and share information, making the church more than just a place to visit. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience Mardin's religious diversity and tolerance. It's a peaceful and worthwhile stop for those interested in history, architecture, and diverse cultures.

We asked if we could borrow the Bible at the exit and they gave it to us immediately. The thing I didn't like about the interior was that one of the staff there was making a critical speech about Islam to other visitors. I wouldn't want this situation to happen. This is the best turkish bath in turkey, the people there is so kind and friendly, the one who do the scrub is very professional and know his job. The prices are so cute, I have been there for each evening, it is also very clean and the services are so good. I can’t wait to go there again. Best luck for you guys. I totally recommend this bath…. For 100 stars ⭐️
If you're a person who enjoys shared saunas, it's worth a visit. It's nice, but very basic. Previous posts said it was 50TL, for an obvious foreigner like me it was 100. That included a peeling & a massage, which were both very short & basic. Nice to experience this part of life here, but don't go in expecting anything luxurious.
One real nice place with friendly persons inside. Is a family place, you can visit and you can spent a few hours in this hamam. Clear, friendly and atractive.
Didn’t know what to expect as it was my first hamam. Very friendly staff. Showed me what to do although they spoke virtually no English. 50 liras which I believe is cheap. Fully scrub, soap, and brief massage. Sauna was nice but didn’t get very hot. Whole experience was about one hour but could have stayed longer and used the sauna and hung out if I wanted. Place looked authentic and traditional. Recommend!
I asked the quote in Turkish which at first was 150 and then they discussed something in Arabic or Kurdish and bumped the price up to 250. There is an obvious difference in price for locals/foreigners. Didn't go as I don't like being ripped off.
Its an very old traditional hammam. They are not too harsh on tourist for scrubbing and it costed 80 Liras plus 20 Liras tip which they expect. Do not expect a luxurious treatment here as local people also come there on regular basis. Overall it was a new experience.
I don’t recommend for foreign women at least. The woman there tried to charge us 250TL for what my husband paid 110TL (same place, same day). Of course we didn’t have that much money so they gave us a very short scrub (while men get scrub + massage + juice). For women at least, It’s a scam.
They have no sanitation, there is better historical hammams. Massage was not massage. That was bad experience. I don't recommend.

Its taste is very different from others due to the quality of the ingredients and the spices used. It's a family business, they are very friendly and cheerful. Süryani çayı ve süryani kahvesini denemenizi öneririm.
It was a very happy coincidence that we came across Kana Shop. Mathias introduced us to their Syrian tastes and culture and offered all of their delicious cookies and homemade vine & liqueur.
