Museum
The Mardin Museum, located in the city center, is a captivating destination showcasing artifacts from various civilizations that have inhabited the area over time. Originally a cavalry barracks and later a tax office, this building was restored and transformed into the museum in 2009. The museum features the Dilek Sabanci Art Gallery on its first floor and exhibits on Mardin's history and heritage on the second floor.
Very informative museum in an typical old mardin style building with a self service Cafe and souvenir shop. It is not big but you have to climb steps to get there.

This is a nice small museum with a collection of artifacts, personally like the coin stand. At the entrance there is no pos terminal, so you can’t pay entrance fee with the card. Can please the authorities provide a pos terminal, so visitors can use credit cards. Ps. Personnel at the entrance is very helpful. My apologies, if I complained a lot about pos terminal:-)

Very nice museum packed with a lot of historical artifacts. Even has a room dedicated to showing fake items found in the market. A must see when visiting Mardin. The building itself that the museum is housed is a great phot opp. Very nice and helpful staff. My wife and I bought the Türkiye Museum Pass, which was a very good deal for our three week tour.

Very informative and modern museum, set in a beautiful palace. It collects artifacts across all history of the city and its region, starting from the prehistory. Really worth a visit.
Andrea S — Google review
Nice museum with lots of Mesopotamia civilizations in it. Located near Cumhuriyet Sq, easy to access. There are too many impressive artifacts some dating 4000 years or so. English translation is available too. It is not a huge museum so expect to spend approx. 45 mins to 1 hr.
Suha G — Google review
The experience was very nice, I like the workshop space and the activities there were very interactive I think the kids will have much fun there and will learn about coins, Ebru art, old games, etc

Perched atop a hill, Mardin Castle overlooks the city and houses a NATO radar. The castle, dating back over 3000 years, played a pivotal role in the city's development. It now serves as a museum offering panoramic views of the city. Mardin boasts other historical sites like Dara and Zeynel Abidin Mosque, while its rich culinary scene blends Turkish, Kurdish, and Arabic influences.
You can only watch this historic place from a distance as it is currently being occupied by the military. Mardin is everything civilization and this castle is one of its historical cornerstone.

The view from Mardin Fortress in the evening is absolutely beautiful, offering a stunning panoramic view of the city and surrounding landscape. ➕ Incredible view, especially at sunset when the city lights up A great spot for photographers and those who enjoy scenic views A historical site with lots of cultural significance ➖ Currently closed for visitors as it is a military base No access to the fortress at the moment Might be disappointing for those expecting to explore the site
Kristina T — Google review
Mardin Castle fascinates with its magnificence. Mardin is a city of faith, history, culture, tourism and gastronomy in itself, and a crossroads of civilizations. It embodies many beliefs, cultures and riches. Perhaps Mardin is the city where the color yellow suits best. Mardin is a city that leans its back against steep rocks and faces the vast Mesopotamian plain. This ancient city is a place for viewing during the day and a necklace at night. Mardin is a stop that you can't get enough of, with its historical mosques, mansions, madrassas and churches. It is a mansion that fascinates those who come beyond the stop. Its people, weather and nature are beautiful. Mardin has another feature. Mardin is the city most similar to Jerusalem in the world. If you haven't seen it yet, you've lost a lot.

Mardin Castle is a 3,000 year old defensive fortification in the city of Mardin, Turkey. It is known as the Eagle's Nest. The castle has been used as a military base as part of a NATO agreement and hosts a radar station due to its position 1,000 meters above the Mesopotamian plain.
Ramil K — Google review
A well worth hike. You get to see the valley and the surrounding architecture of this place.
Derrick D — Google review
Tried to walk all the way up but it's actually some military area. So there is not really a castle or a lookout where people could walk to to overlook the city. We went there at dawn and didn't really feel save, so just dont do it. I've heard that it should become a touristy place, someday. Enjoy (not)
The T — Google review
Unfortunately closed but it is so beautiful to see it during the day and especially during the night looming on the city.

Zinciriye Medresesi is an impressive educational and spiritual complex in Mardin, completed in 1385. The inner courtyard features a small mosque and courtyards with a beautiful fountain reflecting the perfect geometry of its interior construction. Visitors are encouraged to admire the intricate carvings on the main doorway and ascend to the roof for breathtaking panoramic views of Mardin and the Mesopotamian Plains below.
Zinciriye Medresesi is worth returning to again and again — the view is absolutely stunning and makes every visit unforgettable. ➕ Incredible panoramic view of Mardin and the surrounding area Rich historical significance — one of the most important medreses in the region Beautifully restored architecture, showcasing ancient craftsmanship Peaceful and perfect for photography or simply soaking in the scenery ➖ Can be crowded during peak hours Some areas might feel a bit too touristy for those seeking solitude ❤️: Yes, definitely worth revisiting for the breathtaking views and historical experience!

A lovely old school built by sultan isa at 1385 very impressive architecture the tickets is 50TL per person i would highly recommend visiting if you are in mardin
Mirko K — Google review
Simply breathtaking; from the terrace, you get a fantastic view of the landscape and surroundings—simply magical. The only thing I find a shame is that some areas of such a historic and enchanting building are not very clean or are being used as storage! In my opinion, they could raise the entrance fee and keep the entire complex cleaner and tidier. Jewelry is sold in some places. In my opinion, the sales outlets would be better outside the site than inside the building itself. This does take away some of the magic. Overall, definitely worth seeing! Highly recommended! I hope the entire old town never loses its current flair and charm.

It closes at 5:00 PM, the entrance fee is 50 turkish lira. Tea is available in the first section of the madrasa, though it is slightly more expensive than in cafés.

Mosque
Mardin Ulucamii, a remarkable mosque built in 1100 and later expanded by the Artuk dynasty in 1199, stands as a testament to the rich architectural heritage of Mardin. Nestled in Upper Mardin, this stunning structure showcases exquisite Artuklu period architecture crafted from finely cut stone. Its segmented dome reflects an innovative external track technology that has become synonymous with traditional Mardin design over the years.
The Grand Mosque in Mardin is a stunning architectural masterpiece that transports you to a different time and place. The intricate design and historical significance of this mosque are truly awe-inspiring. It's a must-visit for anyone exploring Mardin. The peaceful atmosphere and rich history make it a unique experience. Highly recommended.
Bashir U — Google review
The Mardin Grand Mosque, which is a symbol of Mardin with its segmented dome and minaret, is one of the architectural examples of the Artuqid Period. According to records, it was built with two minarets. The inscription on the square base of the mosque's single minaret today gives the date of construction as 1176. However, the minaret today was built in a new and eclectic style in 1888-1889. Some Syriac writers say that the church was converted into a mosque. Even if the structure was not converted from a church, it is likely that there was an old church on the site.
Ramil K — Google review
Built in year 1100, the architecture is magnificent. The Masjid is Located in a central position in Upper Mardin as the people of Mardin, local people call it. It is a good example of “Artuklu” period architecture and made of pure cut stone. The mosque dome is a segmented structure created with the external track technology. Years later, this technique became the traditional Mardin technique.
Tomas B — Google review
I would like to recommend Emirhan as a young, local tour guide. He is about thirteen, I believe, and gave us full information on the mosque, the city, and other historical buildings.
Musty C — Google review
Nice serene place, solid "romanesque-like" architecture. A little more informatiin about the history would have been nice.
Wayne L — Google review
A piece of city history, one of the oldest. The minaret dominates the view from far away. I suggest to approach this beautiful and full of atmosphere mosque from the narrow streets of the old bazaar.
Astrid C — Google review
One of the epic Mosque in Mardin. It also has the hair of Prophet Mohammad PBUH’s beard preserved.
Amit V — Google review
Built in 1199 by Artuk dynasty, it is by far one of the oldest in Turkey. It also equally encloses an islamic school within its compound and a compartment in wall of the mosque holding the blessed Holy Hair of Hazrat Maulana Muhammed Mustafa SAW. The architecture of the mosque is quite wonderful and its environment serene and inspiring.

I give 3 stars because the administration doesn't take care at all of the historic monument. There's a football playground in the courtyard of the church and kids play hitting the ancient walls and inscriptions of the church with the ball. This is how Mardin takes care of it's monuments! Shame!

The mosque in the center of Mardin, known as Latifiye or Abdullatif Mosque, was mistakenly referred to as Erkulu Mosque. It was constructed during the Artukid period in the 1300s by Abdullatif Bin Abdullah, commissioned by rulers of that time. This religious institution represents one of the final architectural achievements from the Artuqid period and is a remarkable sight to behold in Mardin.

(Translated by Google) It is like a hidden oasis just below the Mardin central street, a rare beauty among the old Mardin houses. The courtyard of the mosque now consists of a rectangle, as we are accustomed to when visiting Mardin, and there is constantly flowing and fresh water here. The mosque was built on the basis that the faithful believers are closest to God during prayer, as in typical Seljuk architecture, the first row is kept longer and more Muslims share the same taste... Being a little bit inside keeps it away from those who do not know it. The engravings on the inner and outer courtyards of the mosque are wonderful, while the interior is kept equally simple, except for the mihrab, but it still makes you feel its magnificence. It has an imam with a very pleasant voice. Resting with awe during prayer time gives another level of peace. If you come to Mardin and want to add something to your heart, it is a place you cannot pass by without spending half an hour.

Perched atop a hill in Mardin, Kasımiye Madrasah is a historic gem with stunning local Artuklu architecture. The 1469 Islamic college boasts a weathered sandstone facade adorned with carvings, offering visitors an immersive journey through its arched doorways and courtyard. The site's two large domes house the tombs of Kasim Pasa and his sister, while its vantage point provides panoramic views of the surrounding plains of Mesopotamia.
Throughout its history Kasimye Madrasah was not just a religious educational institution, but also a center for scientific research. Natural sciences such as astronomy and maths were taught here as well as philosophy and literature. This multidisciplinary approach made the madrasah the most prestigious one in the region. A legend tells of the tragic death of madrasah's founder Sultan Kasim Pasha. According to the story, after he had been murdered his sister spreaded blood from her brother's shirt upon the walls. Even today, it is said, stains resembling traces of blood appear, adding mystical aura to the building.

Kasymiye Madrasah or Kasym Pasha Madrasah is a large madrasah in Mardin, Turkey. The main building has a rectangular shape. The entrance is through an ornate portal from the south. There is a swimming pool in the courtyard. The source of the water is a funnel in the wall, which symbolizes birth. The water from the pool flows through a narrow gap, which symbolizes death and sirat (in the Islamic faith, a narrow bridge in hell leading to heaven). Classrooms surround the pool. The classroom doors are intentionally low to ensure that students will bow respectfully to their teachers when they enter.
Ramil K — Google review
Visiting Kasımiye Madrasah was a truly enriching experience. The moment you step inside, you're transported to a different era, where architecture, spirituality, and history come together beautifully. The stonework, the intricate designs, and the symbolic water stream flowing through the courtyard reflect deep Islamic knowledge and culture. The peaceful ambiance and panoramic view of Mardin city make it an unforgettable stop. It’s not just a historical site – it’s a place that speaks to the soul. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Mardin, especially those who appreciate Islamic art, architecture, and deep-rooted heritage.

It's located in the heart of old Mardin, within easy reach. You can easily find it on foot. The church's exterior boasts a simple yet impressive architecture. Upon entering, you're greeted by a warm, welcoming, and peaceful atmosphere. The details on the walls and the way the light filters through create a sense of spiritual serenity. What impressed me most was the hospitality and genuine warmth of the people inside. Unlike many churches, here you're not just visiting a historical building, but also a vibrant congregation. They're always willing to engage in conversation and share information, making the church more than just a place to visit. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to experience Mardin's religious diversity and tolerance. It's a peaceful and worthwhile stop for those interested in history, architecture, and diverse cultures.

Old Mardin, located on a hillside above the Mesopotamian plains, offers a picturesque setting for leisurely strolls and exploration. The main street is lined with charming gift shops and restaurants. The city boasts a Mediterranean climate, making spring and autumn the best times to visit. Its rich history is evident in the architecture and narrow streets. Visitors can purchase special soaps, Assyrian cookies, and unique souvenirs while being greeted by local children singing traditional songs.

The main high stresten in old Mardin is called 1. Cadde where car park and traffic is always a problem. I suggest you to take a cab from the hotel to visit the places. Rido is my favourite place for lunch but it does not serve during Ramadan. I took his suggestion and had my kebap in Haci Gazi kebap which is lıcated a couple of hundreds meters further ahead. There are many places and shops to visit alıng the street

The old town of Mardin is protected by UNESCO, which prohibits new construction in order to preserve its facade. In a legal document of the New Assyrian period, there is one mention of a road leading to Mardiane (presumably modern Mardin), which indicates that the roots of this name go back at least to the New Assyrian period.

I had Mardin on my Bucket List for a few years and friends were always telling me not to go because it's dangerous. Finally, I decided to take a solo trip for 7 nights and booked an airbnb in Eski Mardin and flight for 10/10/23 and had the most amazing time! 😍 I visited many popular tourist places in Mardin, Midyat and Dara and now have a photo album of around 800 photos and videos. I bought myself some speciality Dibek Kahvesi and 3 Mardin scarves and bought gifts of sugared almonds and hand made soap for friends. I loved it so much and felt very safe walking alone in Eski Mardin I went back again after 3 weeks for another week! 😃 I know it won't be my last either! 🥰

The Mardin Tarihi Emir Hamamı is a popular tourist attraction in Turkey that offers an authentic and traditional Turkish bath experience. The staff are friendly and welcoming, providing clear instructions despite the language barrier. At a reasonable price of 50 liras, visitors can enjoy a thorough scrub, soap treatment, and a brief massage. Although the sauna could have been hotter, the overall experience lasts about an hour but guests are welcome to stay longer and utilize the sauna if desired.
This is the best turkish bath in turkey, the people there is so kind and friendly, the one who do the scrub is very professional and know his job. The prices are so cute, I have been there for each evening, it is also very clean and the services are so good. I can’t wait to go there again. Best luck for you guys. I totally recommend this bath…. For 100 stars ⭐️

If you're a person who enjoys shared saunas, it's worth a visit. It's nice, but very basic. Previous posts said it was 50TL, for an obvious foreigner like me it was 100. That included a peeling & a massage, which were both very short & basic. Nice to experience this part of life here, but don't go in expecting anything luxurious.

Didn’t know what to expect as it was my first hamam. Very friendly staff. Showed me what to do although they spoke virtually no English. 50 liras which I believe is cheap. Fully scrub, soap, and brief massage. Sauna was nice but didn’t get very hot. Whole experience was about one hour but could have stayed longer and used the sauna and hung out if I wanted. Place looked authentic and traditional. Recommend!
Chris W — Google review
I asked the quote in Turkish which at first was 150 and then they discussed something in Arabic or Kurdish and bumped the price up to 250. There is an obvious difference in price for locals/foreigners. Didn't go as I don't like being ripped off.
Ashlyn P — Google review
Its an very old traditional hammam. They are not too harsh on tourist for scrubbing and it costed 80 Liras plus 20 Liras tip which they expect. Do not expect a luxurious treatment here as local people also come there on regular basis. Overall it was a new experience.
Amit V — Google review
I don’t recommend for foreign women at least. The woman there tried to charge us 250TL for what my husband paid 110TL (same place, same day). Of course we didn’t have that much money so they gave us a very short scrub (while men get scrub + massage + juice). For women at least, It’s a scam.

Sıti Radviyye-hatuniye Medresesi, also known as Hatuniye Madrasa, is a remarkable example of madrasah architecture with iwans. Constructed between 1176/7-1184/5, this structure features two iwans, a courtyard with a portico, and two floors. Over time, it has undergone significant changes and lost its original courtyard structure.
A very wonderful place, one i would always and forever fall in love with. I meet these two ever nice guides and I really felt in love with their communication skills. This place harbours an islamic school, mosque, tomb of the mother of Artuk, a great warrior of Mardin, etc. He built this place in honour of his mother. The walls of this building are full inscribed in lessons of Islam, oneness of Allah and an upright living. It is a place i never would forget.

This masjid is situated at the end of Mardin old city and looks insignificant with hardly people there. We were there late afternoon, not very busy. There is rich history in this little masjid. The mimbar/mighrab is phenomenal with each part of it relating to the Nabie Mohammed SAW from the stars to the columns and roses engraved in it. There is a young boy who happily explains all. The footprint of the Nabie Mohammed SAW is easily accessible and if you are lucky the young boy will gladly open the glass cabinet that houses it for you to touch. Algmd we were blessed to experience all of it. It's free to enter, donations are welcome.

"Hatuniye Madrasa - Mardin The other name of Hatuniye Madrasa is Sitti Radviyye Madrasa. Considered as one of the leading examples of madrasahs with iwans in terms of madrasah architecture, the madrasa was built between 1176/7-1184/5. This structure, which covers a rectangular area, has two iwans, a courtyard with a portico, and two floors, has undergone major changes over time, its original state has deteriorated considerably and has lost its courtyard structure. A wall was built to the north of the south iwan with mihrab, which should be the main iwan of the madrasa today, including the portico. The mihrab decorations in the main iwan point to the rich stonework of the Artuqid Period. In a glass next to the mihrab, Hz. The footprints of Muhammad can be seen. To the east of the iwan part, which has been converted into a mosque, there is a square mausoleum with a squinches and a dome. It is known that he was buried in this madrasah built by Sitti Raziye, the mother of Kutbettin Ilgazi."

Awesome place to visit. If in the Mardin area this is a must see. My wife and I spent about 3 hours vising all the sites in Dara (2 cisterns, ancient city, tombs). Day we visited some kids were chasing a mentally challenged adult and throwing rocks at him. The town itself is very dirty and its kind of depressing to see people literally living in structures (using structures loosely) built on top of one of the 2,000 year old cisterns. With all this said still worth visiting. Going between the sites I would suggest driving versus walking.

Perhaps it wasn't a good idea to visit during peak season and weekend. It's a hard time to walk around to absorb the feeling of the past whilst the crowd sort of making loud noises and can't focus to stay still at one spot. The parking spot was also difficult. However, it was a cool experience and kind a difficult to find toilet.

Definitely must see ancient town! Dara, an important East Roman fortress city dating back year of 530. Ancient city is huge and modern town of Dara is now situated on the ruins which are clearly seen. People continue living in ancient city, we can say. Grave area is well kept and welcomes you as a first stop. Necropol, dungeon, and a King Seat is a bit away, in village centre. Anyone visiting Mardin shouldn’t miss this forgettable experience.

I was amazed by this ruin city where mostly you can find caves carved in the stone. There is alsó a necropolis which is very unique. The site is on a huge area. It is highly recommended!
Gabriella S — Google review
Visiting Dara when in Mardin should be mandatory. About 35 km to the east of Mardin you find not only ruins of this once strategically important place but also a church carved into a rock with a necropolis. See graves in the walls and through a glass floor myriads of bones in basement floor. Explanation: Dead bodies were buried in the carved bunks in walls. After a few month the meat was absorbed by the lime stone and bones were either given back to the family or thrown into the ground floor. Very hygienic and brainy. Not sure if people who still bury their dead relatives in a bag, awaiting the worms from inside, could become familiar with this idea. I'm bowing for them.

The Sakıp Sabancı Mardin Kent Müzesi, located in a former military barracks, is a treasure trove of Mardin's rich heritage. This charming museum offers an insightful journey through the city's diverse history and culture, featuring well-curated artifacts and exhibits that highlight its cosmopolitan past. Visitors can enjoy excellent English translations alongside engaging audio-visual presentations that enhance their experience.
For my love for Mardin and its history, I have come to love this museum a lot because it has captured almost all and everything Mardin. A careful and detailed tour of this museum in just some few hours, helps take you throughout Mardin chronologically and in modernity. The christian Mardin, Islamic Mardin, cultural Mardin, industrial and occupational Mardin, etc. Moreover, entrance is free for student group with a teacher. I most seriously recommend this wonderful museum and it is surely one of the must-see of Turkey.

Really interesting museum, where we spent 2 hours to get through all their material. We learned a lot about history of Mardin area, local life and customs, food, crafts... good descriptions in English and thus probably the place where we learned the most about this region. Very interesting and I highly recommend!

Great museum, very modern and informative. It gives you an overview of the history of Mardin. Must be visited along with the archaeological museum.

The museum is just one room. The staff is totally incompetent: I showed them my ICOM card and they said I have to pay. I showed them written in front of the ticket office that ICOM members are free. They have no idea how to do their job, I had to teach them who has or not free entrance. Then they lock the toilets only for themselves and don't let tourists to use a toilet while at the museum. Unprofessional.

Wonderful. Housed in a beautifully restored building. İnteresting collection and exhibition. Accessible to anyone. Air conditioned. Places to seat and rest. A must see.

The worst museum I’ve ever visited. Terrible content for the price and it offers almost nothing. They don’t even display original pieces, just images of them. Instead, visit Mardin Museum to get better understanding of the city and its history.

When we landed in Mardin, our hotel concierge suggested we start at this museum, to get our bearings. She was right. This relatively new museum, run by one of Turkey's biggest conglomerates, Sabanci Holding, was a good starting point to understand the history of Mardin. This is Mesopothamia. -- where civilzation began. There is so many layers of culture and history that really, one must read volumes before arriving here. If not, then the Sabanci musum is the perfect 'summary' to understand what you'll be experiencing in this city over the course of your visit. Do pay the minimal entrance fee ( I think it was less than 2 usd) and take a quick tour. The building itself is gorgeous, and the depth of information shared is very useful. I wish I had taken more photographs, but I was unsure if I was allowed - hence the poor quality of what I have to share. Yet, I will still share for the sake of sharing. Enjoy
