Put this place in your itinerary whenever you have a plan to visit Kushiro city, Hokkaido. A spot for bird photography lovers... don't forget bring along your special lenses to take great pictures...very recommend spot!!!
The location itself is picturesque, situated along a charming road that sets the scene for a peaceful retreat. However, as my visit coincided with the off-season, I was quite disheartened not to see any of the majestic cranes the place is named for. It's important to note that if you're planning a visit specifically to see the cranes, it would be best to research the appropriate time of year to ensure you catch a glimpse of these graceful birds.
I use package tour "White Pirika" to come to see this place around 0920-0940 am. Wow! The crane is bigger than I think. And their voice is so loud. Very good.
Went mid november at around 9pm, waited till 9.30 and still didnt see any. The pictures attached were the ones we found while driving away to the Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary on other farmlands. Recommended coming maybe from december onwards when it starts snowing
You have pick the right timing to see the cranes. We reached there about 5pm and couldn't see any cranes😂. From the written board, the feeding time was 9am and 1:30pm in winter Feb 2025. Between 9am and 3pm you could see more than 100 cranes.
Awesome. Considered the sacred crane of the orient, red-crowned cranes are a symbol of fidelity in marriage, good luck, long life and love. They are the second rarest crane in the world, behind the whooping crane. Range & Habitat: Marshes and deep wetland areas in spring and summer.
Probably great in winter but in summer it is just a little field as all the cranes are off hiding on the woods! Much better just to keep your eyes peeled as you drive around the area, hopefully you’ll spot some. There is a parking area, visitor centre opposite and some space to sit out of the weather.
Best place to see the Bird Tancho a very rare species of bird. Birds starts coming to this place since morning 7.30 am to 8.00am.. we can fully day stand here and take amazing photos of the bird. There js no entry fee here. We can stand outside the fencing and take photographs. We had taken our winter photography tour from India..

Visit is worthwhile. If you get there less than an hour before the feeding, you’ll have to try to squeeze into a spot at the fence. Good luck if you have a cell phone for camera.
Great spot to see the red crowned cranes. Also saw deer and fox but they were really far away. You have to stand behind a fence, but the cranes come really close. Someone came and fed the cranes at 9 am.
Probably the best location to observe and photograph the red-crowned cranes. The distance to the cranes was just perfect for observation and photography. I was lucky to witness numerous courtship dances, which was truly amazing. If you're planning to go, make sure to arrive earlier than the 9am feeding time. This way, you can watch the birds landing and ensure you have a good spot for photography. There are lots of photographers who set up their tripods early, so you'll want to make sure you're there in time. Overall, it was a great experience. Highly recommended.
Brilliant. One of the most beautiful looking crane species I have ever seen. The cranes around 8:30am and some people come just to admire them and take pictures. This place is very rural and I would recommend renting a car if you do want to come here. PS - Interested to see the cranes through binoculars? Check out the short video here 👇 https://youtu.be/gDO4fpQ_e-c?si=zTLk7nFeOyVqqn9s
The entry is free. They feed the red crown cranes with sweet corn scattered on the fields so you are sure to always see these magnificent creatures. The very knowledgeable, gentle and helpful guides in the centre answer any questions and provide in-depth information on these cranes. A great place for all your photos but be prepared to wait for them to fly in for that great shot with their wings open.
A chance to get close with the wild cranes and observe them. The drive is long as you will need to use some roads that are narrow and unlit at nite. Would not recommend if you want to drive here during winter with heavy snow. Staff at the conservation center are also very friendly. Not recommended for people who are rushing from point to point.
The red-crowned cranes here are not raised in captivity, but wild red-crowned cranes, so there are no cages or fences. Great location for bird photography, can get quite busy though. Lots of cranes at a perfect viewing distance. There is parking and restrooms.
A Red-Crowned Crane santuary that you should visit if you want to see the beautiful Crane. Feeding time is 9am and 11am. You should be there around these two times if you want to get good photos of these cranes. These cranes are considered to be good luck cranes by the Japanese and is also a symbol of love for them. The cranes normally pair for life. I have numerous photos of them including a young Crane where the head feathers are brownish as compared to the adult Crane which is black. If you want to have good photos of the cranes flying, you have to be patient and wait for a long time to catch that perfect shot. Good luck.

I spent around 2 hours here. The Onnenai Visitor Centre was very informative, quiet and clean. The wetland walk was very beautiful. I went during mid December'24. Most of the marsh was frozen and the plants withered. Part of the walk was closed till 28th February '25 for renovation. Peaceful and serene walk. I saw deers and birds.
This is a really nice wetland with great boardwalk trails. The maintenance of the boardwalk pathways are great and they also take the effort to mark out certain flowers of interest, which can be seasonal. The visitor centre also looks pretty new and is also informative to learn more about the area.
Had a wonderful time enjoying the boardwalk within the marshland. This is an easy walk about 2km from start to back to beginning point. The route was flat all round making it perfect for a slow walk enjoying the cold air and wind and stopping occasionally to take great pictures. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
120m from the parking lot, down several flights of stairs. Well-maintained center with clean toilets and several exhibits. You can borrow cowbells and binoculars for free from the information counter. The marsh Mokudo boardwalk is easily accessible from the center.
We've been here in mid-September 2017. From the visitor center start walking along the raised trail. In late summer the view is not that great, but the endless plains are worth a while. Interesting information about the vegetation is loacted along the trail. Nice place but I would't recommend coming all the way just for this one. Try going to the observatories of the marshes as well. Allocate 1-1.5 hours for the trip.
This center is very nice for person who interesting about wetland ecosystem and habitat of red crowned cranes. At that center, we can learn a large variety of things related with Kushiro wetland and a lot of books you can found in it.
Nice walking path in the nature. It’s calming in some sense. Very quiet and not crowded at all. Good little walk in the nature.
Great place to stop and go for a walk. Lovely visitor center with clean bathrooms and lots of info in English. Well thought out interpretive signs along trail as well (also with some English). Wish we had more time to spend here. Tons of skis and snow shoes in visitor center, perhaps they rent them...

This was a really nice vacation to see the natural beauty of Hokkaido and try riding the Dosanko horses. The staff are kind and supportive, and the horseback lesson has a good emphasis on safety and technique. The lesson was in Japanese language, so I recommend being able to speak basic Japanese if you want to do this activity. Thank you to the kind staff for taking care of me when I was sick. I hope to visit again!
Very nice big farm with horses. Friendly staff, went on a quiet day as the only occupants. Good long ride around and knowledgable and funny English speaking guide Mr Kawasaki. Dinner and breakfast was okay, comfortable stay but convenient stalls not that near. Would go back again if want horse ride.
The staff here is so rude. I called them to ask for reservation but they said no after they realised I’m a foreigner from my spoken Japanese. They show the worst side of Japanese. Disappointed.
Very very good place one of the best places i have been in 2 hours of riding even better. Cant get better the portion of beeakfast and dinner was perfect and it was really testy. Recommend a lot for whoever is coming. Also very very nice Staff.
I rode a horse for the very first time ever! It was an amazing experience to be in control but at the same time be controlled. They really are wonderful creatures. I invite you to give it a try. Mr Tsunoda was a fantastic teacher. During the tour he also taught me a lot about the history of the Kushiro marshland.
awesome. Great food very fun horse riding and great owners. Would recommend
Horse riding is so funny
(Translated by Google) I tried the half-day course without staying overnight. It was raining, but horseback riding through the wet marshes was very enjoyable and had a unique atmosphere. It would be a shame to cancel just because it was raining. Raincoats and rain gloves were available to rent for free, so you don't have to worry. Thanks to our fun guide, who was a great teacher, and our smart and kind guide, I had a wonderful experience that I will never forget! I highly recommend it!

short and easy hiking course there. not recommend to go up to the observation with fee. observation decks that you can encounter on the hiking course are pretty enough. I think the scenery varies depending on season, and autumn is not so good for here.
We visited with little time, so we couldn't visit all the bulding nor walk the entire trail. Nevertheless we could enjoy the autumn foliage and do some birdwatching, although considering the season, the trail was very silent. I'd definitely come back with more time as the place looks promising!
We had a brief stay here, paid the entrance fee for the marsh observatory view from the roof top. Exhibition in the building is a small one to introduce the wetland ecosystem. We didn’t paid much attention into that. Building will close at 18:00 during summer time The trail will be closed at 17:30 because of possible appearance of the black bear. Trail walk itself don’t not require ticket but the roof top observatory and the exhibition requires a ticket (¥480/adult)
We took a walk looping the Broadwalk. The weather was very conducive though there are parts of the Broadwalk that requires some amount of maintenance. It’s about 2.5km short walk, great for a stopover stretching and deep breathing exercises in a self drive holiday.
Nice hike through the marsh up to Onnenai Visitor Center and back. There are no famous cranes here, but it is still nice to see the local flora and fauna. I was lucky and somebody was at the archeological site so I could have a look inside one of the pithouses.
Seemed a long walk to get to the lookout. Just coming out of winter when we visited, so the ground was brown unfortunately, with not much to see. Japan's largest wetlands (around 300 ha). Akan Mountains can be seen from observation deck.
The observatory - sadly - is very bad. There‘s no view of the marsh, just the industrial area closeby. I wouldn’t even recommend it for free, let alone 480 yen per person - a ripoff. The exhibition includes some fish in a tiny tank. :( 1 extra star for the friendly reception staff.
Wonderfull view in the marsh. Elegant architectural interior.

No open flame ・Garbage: Acceptable by purchasing designated garbage bags ・Toilet: including simple flush toilet (Some with washlet) ・Store, product sales: Sold in the administration building (vending machines available) ・Convenience store, supermarket: about 10 minutes by car This is a grassy grassland site that used to be a park golf course. It is possible to drive directly into the site from the designated entrance. Apparently there is a feeding station adjacent to the site, and in the morning you can wake up to the sound of the cranes' cries. It's open all year round, but in the winter, they even visit the site. The feature is a spacious lawn that has been carefully maintained. It was originally a 36-hole park golf course. There are no extreme slopes. However, since there are no trees or other shelters, it is necessary to take precautions against strong direct sunlight in the summer, such as preparing a tarp. The restrooms are clean and well-maintained, although some of them only have simple flushes. The toilet in the back can be used from 1700. At night, when you dim the lantern and light a bonfire, you can see a starry sky. Since the city lights are far away, you can enjoy stargazing. Of course, flies, bees, mosquitoes, etc. fly around, so insect repellent measures are essential. Although we have not seen any damage caused by wild animals such as crows and foxes devouring perishables and garbage, countermeasures and extreme caution are required. Quiet time is from 2200 to 0600 during the busy season. is set to . Fortunately, we didn't encounter any annoying group campers or drunk people who were making noise until late. As with anywhere, please observe the minimum manners. Approximately 30 minutes by car to the city of Kushiro. Stretch your legs further and get to Akkeshi in about 60 to 90 minutes. Since it is adjacent to the Kushiro Marsh, you can also see the vast marsh from the observation deck. There are Secoma and Hokuren shops in Tsurui city. There are also two day trip hot spring facilities. To all the management staff. Thank you for providing a safe and secure site. Next time I will use it for winter camping. (Translated by Google) The owner was very helpful. I was able to take a picture of the fireflies that you told me about flying around. This is a campsite where you can see fireflies. This is a free site with a vast grassy area where you can park your vehicle anywhere up to the side of the tent. I used it at the beginning of July. In my case, I could use WiFi, so I set up a tent relatively close to the reception and had a bonfire while watching a baseball game. I didn't notice it at first because there was a bonfire going, but when the owner told me to look into the darkness, I saw the light of fireflies everywhere. When I turned off the lights when I went to sleep at night, the fireflies lit up inside the tent and it was magical. By the way, you can light a bonfire on the bonfire stand, and there is even a microwave, oven, and water heater inside the hut. I would have loved to have a beer if there was a kiosk made by the owner, but I'll be looking forward to it next time. I regret that I couldn't see the starry sky because the weather was not good, so I would definitely like to visit again. P.S.) When I was leaving in the morning, I slipped on a slippery grassy field and knocked down my bike. Was it the owner's son? I've been using various campgrounds for almost 3 months, but this is definitely the one where I slept the best, and I ended up staying there for 3 consecutive nights to get rid of the fatigue from my long trip. ①The grass is well-managed and fluffy. (The owner is also a lawn care professional and is a management professional.) ②The site is flat and vast, and there is distance from the campers next door, so just looking at it is relaxing. (Originally a park golf course) ③There are no lights except near the administration building, and it is almost pitch black at night. ④Quiet time is provided to ensure a good night's sleep. There are also free camping sites in Hokkaido, Sometimes it's good to go to a well-maintained paid campsite like this one. Also recommended for long-term travellers. (Translated by Google) First visit in late 2023 (5 nights with tent, etc. and parked next to car). Adjacent to the Kushiro Wetlands, this is a valuable campsite where you can enjoy the rich nature and is worth visiting even from far away. Of course it's wonderful to just go camping, but for some people, it's a mysterious place that can ``change your life.'' The good thing is, first of all, the grounds are spacious! When it comes to setting up tents, there are no restrictions on the division or number of tents (although this is common sense), so even as a beginner, I was able to practice carefully how to set up a tarp. Also, the owner and all the staff were friendly and kind, so I was able to spend my time with peace of mind. Outsiders were not allowed to enter without permission. Facilities are minimal: toilet, kitchen, and beverage vending machine. However, if you drive for a few minutes, there is a convenience store, and if you drive for about 10 minutes to the center of Tsurui Village, you will find a hot spring (the hot water from our partner is the best!), a supermarket, a coin laundry, and a souvenir shop, so you won't feel inconvenienced. did. If you travel by car, you can go not only to Kushiro Marsh but also to the area around Lake Mashu and Abashiri in 1 to 2 hours each way, making it a convenient base for sightseeing in eastern Hokkaido. (There is also a plan for camping empty-handed, so if you are interested, please contact the campsite.) Also, when I stayed there, there were no bears, small animals (cats, foxes, etc.), or crows, so I was able to eat with peace of mind. However, all users should be careful if they leave trash or food outside their tents, as this will attract them. (Please note that in winter, red-crowned cranes and deer come to the frozen lawn.) One thing to be aware of is that if you have too much exposed skin, you will be bitten by gnats. According to the locals, there are many ranches in the area, so gnats are common, so they wear long pants even in summer. I didn't know about it and was wearing shorts and a tank top, and I got stung so many times below my knees that the whole area was red and swollen, and I was in agony from the itching. (If you are concerned, please bring a strong insect repellent spray with you.) Secondly, the only lighting at night is in front of the toilets, so you can see the stars clearly without any obstructive lights, but if you are worried about traveling at night, we recommend bringing a light for your feet. Also, bonfires are generally OK, but you must use a bonfire mat and a bonfire stand that is far above the ground to avoid burning the beautiful, well-maintained lawn. It's an ``open campsite'' where local events are held, so we hope it will be loved by everyone and continue our business for many years to come.
(Translated by Google) I stayed here for 2 nights from August 12, 2022. This is a new campsite that opened in 2021, and I've been interested in it for a while. It is said that it was originally a production area for fresh grass. There is a wonderful lawn all around the grounds, and if you pay 500 yen a day, you can drive your car onto the lawn and park it next to the tent. Geographically, it is very close to Kushiro, less than 30 minutes away, and because it is located near a Japanese crane sanctuary, we twice saw cranes flying in formation over the campsite. For those living in Sapporo, it was a thrilling moment to see red tancho, something we don't usually see. By the way, beyond the forest on the back side is a national park, so we were warned not to enter. The grounds are very spacious, and all of the sites are open to cars, so if the weather is clear, you can see a sky full of stars at night.Unfortunately, it was cloudy on the day we camped, so we couldn't see any stars, but we did see a spectacular sunset. I did. Free WIFI is available, but as you get to the middle of the site, the signal gets weaker and the antenna is at 2nd place, so it seems a little weak. Check-in time is 9am and check-out time is 2pm, which is very relaxing and wonderful. The grass was fluffy, but the rain that had fallen the day before had soaked into the ground, so this camp was a battle against humidity. Since it is located in the Kushiro Marsh, the humidity is naturally high. Although it's not noticeable, I was bitten by about 10 small mosquitoes, so I need to take precautions. The location and site are great, but there is one drawback: the toilets. There are two toilets, but the one near the entrance is usually usable (two portable toilets for men and women), and the toilet in the center left of the site (one for men and women) can only be unlocked when it is crowded. Because it was a simple toilet, I couldn't flush the water once the water in the tank ran out, which caused stress and forced me to hold back from using the toilet (large). I saw the manager's wife frequently replenishing water, but when the place was full, it was empty. This time, especially since it was a Saturday during Obon, the toilets, especially the women's toilets, were crowded and there was a long wait, which seemed to be stressful. There is no problem if there is a toilet near the center of the site. If possible, I would like to see an increase in the number of women's restrooms. There are two kitchens, and although they are not very clean, I think they are sufficient. Firewood (1,000 yen per basket) is sold at the reception, and bathing tickets to a nearby day-trip hot spring (HOTEL TAITO, 10 minutes by car) are sold for 500 yen instead of the usual 600 yen. I actually bought it and went to take a bath, and it was a nice hot spring with beautiful facilities, an open-air bath, and brown water. Garbage such as plastic bottles and cans will be picked up for free, but other garbage can be picked up at the reception if you purchase a 50 yen garbage bag. Looking at the cars parked in the parking lot, many of them had Kushiro license plates, and most of the campers seemed to be from the Kushiro area, and since it was Obon, there were many party campers from nearby. The day we stayed was the Saturday of Obon, so we were prepared for some trouble, but a group of two families had set up tents right next to us, and a large group of parents, relatives, and acquaintances had arrived for a banquet with about 20 people. I was embarrassed to start. He speaks and laughs extremely loudly, and I can hear him bragging about his camping gear. The party continued into the night, so I brought earplugs so it wasn't too bothersome, but my wife was so bothered that she could only sleep for about 2 hours. Also, as other people have written, there are people who run right next to the tent at the same speed as the road, so I would appreciate if you could instruct me to drive at a slow speed of about 10 km. I think it's a developing campsite with a lot of issues, but I'd like to visit again if the toilet issue is fixed.

Facilities (in the middle of winter) include two portable toilets each for men and women, and one each has a washlet. However, if the temperature drops below -20℃, the washlet will not work after that lol The kitchen is also protected from freezing. It is said to be the village of cranes in Tsurui Village, so I was able to see cranes many times every day! (Translated by Google) October 8, 2022 Reply You also deleted your first reply, which was an apology for the lack of explanation. I accepted that there was no intention. What the owner wants to say is that it's too early. If you are concerned about water, run it until it gets cold or use water from a newly installed jug. The toilet in the back has a small tank, and the toilet in the back doesn't come right away, so unless it's crowded, only the one toilet at the entrance is used. It's not that the capacity of the tank is bad, it's that the water doesn't come right away. That's what you mean, right?? Is the first toilet the toilet at the entrance? Will that be new? The second toilet in the back does not have a new tank, so usually only the one toilet at the entrance is in operation. This means that the number of toilets and the way they are used will remain the same as before. (There are two toilets, but only one can be used normally) I have a lot of things to think about, but please do your best. I support you behind the scenes. ↓↓↓↓Past articles↓↓↓↓↓ I stayed for 2 nights in August 2022. Originally a park golf course? Was it? It's one of the largest campsites that is privately run. Two toilets Two kitchens There are no facilities such as showers, so you will need to drive to a nearby hot spring before drinking alcohol. * Approximately 10 km to Tsurui Village city center without traffic lights The view was covered with trees and you couldn't see the mountains in the distance, but it was nice to spend time looking at the waves of the well-kept lawn. It was fluffy and comfortable, and I was barefoot. *At your own risk Fortunately, when I went I was able to see the sunset turning bright red. *Photo included It's a very nice campsite, but there are three things that I'm concerned about.*I'm writing this without any bias. ・Water smells bad. (When I cooked rice with the tap water here, the smell got stronger.) Could it be the smell from the plumbing? I left it out for a while, but the smell didn't go away. After that, I bought water at a convenience store and brought it with me. ・There are two toilets, but for some reason the one in the back was closed, so I had to walk a long distance to the administration building every time, which was inconvenient. ←Because I drink alcohol... The selling point is the spaciousness, but you can only use one area. ・Many cars are speeding through the field. I would like to see this strictly regulated as soon as possible. Please explain strongly when entering! Why are you in such a hurry even when the children are playing? There were many cars that made me think... Although it was a relatively new campsite, we had a comfortable time. Check-in is from 9:00 am and check-out is from 2:00 pm, so it's great that you can have a relaxing stay. I only met the owner, but I was impressed by the warmth of the employees. I think the price is also reasonable. You can also connect to Wi-Fi. It was a campsite that I would like to visit again.

(Translated by Google) It was my first time playing golf in Hokkaido as I was able to play golf in a cool environment that rarely exceeded 30 degrees Celsius even in the summer⛳️It was 30-35 minutes from Kushiro city, and I sent my bag back by airmail in advance, but when I went there, it was on the cart. . The clubhouse is a little old, as are the lockers, cafeteria, and bathrooms, but it was a clean and comfortable space with no functional issues. Since it was a Sunday, there were quite a lot of people, but there are 2 holes of 18✖️, and there were many tourists like us with 2-3 backs, so we were able to get through the 18 holes smoothly. The practice field is 250 yards long, and although it was not allowed that day, it seems that if the grass is in good condition, you can practice from the grass. There is also a bunker, approach, and green practice area, and I saw some locals only coming here. I went around the West Course, and the out side has a lot of left doglegs, and the inn has a lot of right doglegs, but I have the impression that it is a course with a lot of tricks. Carts were allowed on the fairway, but all holes were in good condition, including the greens. The greens don't look difficult, but they're not too easy, and some holes have turrets to increase the difficulty. Although the course is not wide, it is not too narrow and I had a comfortable round with few OBs. Please note that there are few teahouses along the way, so it would be best to prepare plenty of water. It was also a through play. I bought some insect repellent peppermint water at the front desk and sprayed it on, but I didn't feel like there were that many insects (the smell of peppermint was nice and refreshing). I played a round in Kushiro because it was said to be No. 1, and I was able to play in the coolness that would be unheard of in Honshu, and the course was moderately difficult, making it very enjoyable and comfortable to play. The staff are friendly and it's a golf course that makes you want to play another round ⛳️ (Original)

The temperature was around 25°C for late August, so it was a very pleasant course! The course is beautiful in the middle of the fairway, but as you get closer to the bridge, the grass has grown quite a bit. The rough was deep and the grass was so healthy! I couldn't find the ball when I hit it! I thought of it as practice for the rough, so I did my best. It was a popular, old-fashioned golf course. The insect infestation, as mentioned in reviews, was not a big deal, so perhaps it was due to the effect of spraying insect repellent beforehand?? There were members participating that day, and the East Course was an even better course, but it seems you can only play it if accompanied by a member. I would definitely like to play the East Course. It was a course that really made me want to conquer it. I would like to go to Kushiro again next year. It's a long distance, so let's do our best to fly it ❗ Although it is flat, there are many holes that gradually become narrower, so a local member said that the second shot was difficult. It's true that there are tree branches sticking out from the sides, making it difficult to adjust the height. It is often blocked by branches and dropped directly under them. I entered an open competition, but the product was not very good. Locals say that of all the golf courses near Kushiro, the prizes are the worst. It's a hilly course, and even from the regular tee, the distances are quite good. I struggled with the landing spot for my tee shot, the difficulty of my second shot, and the slope of the green. Even more than the difficulty of the course, the insects were terrible. The black flies were awful, but there was also an infestation of moths, and the toilets on the course were so teeming with them that it gave me goosebumps. I later learned that this year there has been a major infestation of poisonous moths called Japanese snail moths. Also, even though carts are allowed on the course, it took over 2 hours and 45 minutes for the half course, which was frustrating. Although it's a membership course, there seemed to be several competitions going on at the same time, so play was slow. I didn't really practice swings, just one quick practice swing, and quickly went to my ball with about three clubs. After finishing the hole, I quickly got into the cart with my clubs still in hand and started it off. I put my clubs away and filled out my scorecard at the tee ground of the next hole. Just by doing these steps, even someone with a score of around 110 can complete the course in 2 hours and 10 minutes, and they will be praised for their good planning. Everyone, please give it a try.
