The Sapporo Beer Museum, located in a former factory, offers free admission and features exhibits, tours, and paid tastings. Visitors of all ages can enjoy a tour of the museum to learn about the history of beer in Japan and the beer-making process. The highlight of the tour is a half-hour tasting session with an array of beers available. While sake may seem like a more traditional Japanese drink, experiencing the birth of Hokkaido's famous beer at this museum is also worthwhile.
I loved visiting the Sapporo Beer Museum. Learned a lot about the brand’s history, and the tasting room was a highlight—the beer was perfectly chilled and tasted amazing. A must-visit for beer lovers! (The museum was under exterior restoration but the operations inside were at 100%). At the end, you should enjoy the grilled lamb Genghis Khan at the Sapporo Garden restaurant. They have All You Can Eat options at a very reasonable price.

Overall a pretty good facility, would recommend. Free tour available but if you want the premium tour it’s 1,000¥ or so. Make sure you buy premium tour tickets in advance as they get sold out quickly. Facility is large and modern with a good collection of historical pieces. Tour is well laid out, and flows from start to finish. There is a beer tasting hall at the end with an exclusive Sapporo Beer Museum brew only available at this location and not sold anywhere else. Shop is also available for souvenirs. Overall, if you have some time I recommend checking out the Beer Museum. The atmosphere and surrounding area is nice and it’s a nice activity to eat up a couple hours.

If you are visiting Sapporo, the Sapporo Beer Museum is definitely worth a stop. It is not only a place to drink beer, but also a spot where you can experience the history, culture, and spirit of Hokkaidō. 🏛 Atmosphere & History The museum is inside a red-brick building from 1890, originally part of a sugar factory. The design is very nostalgic, industrial, and full of Meiji-era character. Just standing outside for photos feels like stepping back in time. Inside, the displays guide you through the story of how Sapporo Beer started in 1876 with German brewing techniques, and how it became one of the most iconic Japanese beer brands. 🖼 Exhibitions The exhibition area is well organized: • Old brewing machines, posters, and bottles give you a sense of history. • Models and videos explain the brewing process in a simple way. • You can learn about the famous “Star” logo, symbolizing the pioneers of Hokkaidō. Most panels are in Japanese, but many parts also have English explanations, which makes it friendly for international visitors. 🍺 Beer Tasting The highlight is of course the Beer Tasting Hall. Here you can order a 3-glass tasting set for around ¥800, which includes: • Sapporo Black Label – smooth and classic. • Sapporo Classic – only available in Hokkaidō. • Kaitakushi Beer – a revival of the original 19th-century recipe. The atmosphere is casual, and even if you are not a big drinker, just trying a small glass gives you the authentic Sapporo experience. 🍴 Food & Beer Garden Right next to the museum is the Sapporo Beer Garden, famous for Genghis Khan (ジンギスカン), the Hokkaidō-style grilled lamb. The pairing of juicy lamb and fresh draft beer is something you really shouldn’t miss. 📍 Access & Practical Info • About 15–20 minutes walk from Sapporo Station, or 10 minutes by bus. • The museum entrance is free, tasting is paid. • Best to visit in the afternoon or evening, then stay for dinner at the beer garden. ⸻ ✅ Overall impression: The Sapporo Beer Museum is more than a tourist spot – it is a mix of history, culture, architecture, and great beer. Whether you are a beer lover or just curious, it offers a very “only in Hokkaidō” experience.
Min M — Google review
The Sapporo Beer Museum, a former brewery now operating as a museum, offers paid tours and beer tasting. The tasting set, featuring three different beers, costs ¥1,200. Honestly, there's not much to see inside the museum itself. Most visitors just speed through the exhibits and head straight for the draft beer tasting hall to grab those essential Instagram-worthy shots. You can easily purchase your tasting tickets from a vending machine there. If you're a draft beer enthusiast, this place is a non-negotiable must-do for your Sapporo trip. However, for non-drinkers, it's pretty much a pointless tourist spot. The real value of visiting here is chugging that super cold draft beer. Highly recommended for all my fellow beer lovers! 🍺💯"
Patrick — Google review
The Sapporo Beer Museum is absolutely worth a visit. The old red-brick brewery building has a lot of charm, and the exhibition gives a nice overview of Sapporo’s brewing history with many original posters and details from past decades. At the end of the tour, the beer hall is the perfect place to sit down and taste the different Sapporo beers. The tasting set was very fairly priced, and the atmosphere inside was warm and lively without being crowded. A relaxed and enjoyable stop in Sapporo — especially if you appreciate good beer and history combined. 🍺
Ivo V — Google review
Very interesting museum about brewing in Japan with exhibits dated back many years ago! And of course the tasting room is the most popular part of the museum with a lovely beer hall for people to taste different brews. Walking around the museum area is also very nice and if you feel like a bit of shopping there’s a mall right next door too.
Andrew P — Google review
Good place to visit as its beside Sapporo factory. The free tour starts at third floor, where you spiral down. Second floor had a few exhibits then you go down to the tasting room where you can sample beer. It gets a bit crowded here. Although its free, many people will also spend at the tasting room for the beer, at the shop (both inside and out) and at the bier garten.
Neil C — Google review
The Sapporo Beer Museum is a great mix of history and flavor! Loved learning the story behind Japan’s oldest beer brand in such a beautiful old building. The tasting was the highlight — fresh, crisp, and delicious. Don’t miss the exclusive Beer you can only try here. 🍺

Odori Park, a spacious 1.5 km stretch located south of Sapporo Station, is more than just a park - it's a vibrant hub for events and leisure. Lined with trees and flowers that change with the seasons, the park hosts lively gatherings like the Yosakoi Soran Festival in summer and a charming winter festival illuminated by beautiful lights.
Odori Park is a must-visit destination in Sapporo, offering a perfect blend of nature, culture, and city life. Stretching over 1.5 kilometers, the park divides the city into north and south, serving as a refreshing green space amidst Sapporo's urban landscape. During my visit, I was struck by the park's meticulously landscaped gardens, vibrant flower displays, and iconic landmarks like the Sapporo TV Tower. The park is especially lively during events like the Sapporo Snow Festival and the summer beer garden, making it a dynamic spot for both locals and tourists. Whether you're strolling through the pathways, relaxing on a bench, or enjoying the seasonal festivals, Odori Park provides a peaceful yet vibrant atmosphere. Its central location, accessibility, and diverse attractions make it a highlight of any trip to Sapporo.
Neil A — Google review
Odori Park is the heart of Sapporo, stretching through the city center and changing its charm with every season. In spring, colorful tulips and cherry blossoms brighten the lawns, making it perfect for a stroll or picnic. Summer brings lively festivals, food stalls, and outdoor performances, filling the park with energy. Autumn paints the trees in shades of red and gold, turning the park into a calm, scenic walkway. In winter, Odori transforms into a snowy wonderland, hosting the world-famous Sapporo Snow Festival with giant ice and snow sculptures. Whether day or night, any time of year, Odori Park is a must-visit to enjoy Sapporo’s nature and culture right in the middle of the city.
Chalermchon S — Google review
A beautiful park with lots of shade trees, smaller gardens and numerous places to sit and enjoy by yourself or with friends. There are small coffee and snack stands close to the Sapporo tower. There’s a historic building at the other end - also a Five ring Olympic Ring by the rose garden. It has a rectangular layout that makes for a good leisurely stroll. It’s very accessible via subway or streetcar. It’s within walking distance of the main JR station, Susukino and Tanikokoji.

🌳 Odori Park – Sapporo’s Chillest Backyard 🌸 Smack in the center of Sapporo, Odori Park stretches over a dozen blocks and feels like the city just exhaled. It’s not your typical “big attraction,” but that’s kind of what makes it great. It’s where locals walk their dogs, kids chase pigeons, and travelers like us take a breath between ramen bowls and sightseeing stops. The park runs east to west, carving a green path right through downtown. Depending on when you visit, you might stumble into a full-blown festival, a beer garden, an ice sculpture competition, or… nothing at all—and somehow, that’s just as nice. In summer, it’s all fountains and flowerbeds; in winter, it’s a snow-covered wonderland. It’s not flashy, but it’s the kind of place that grounds you in the city. Sit on a bench, grab a soft serve or hot corn from a stall, and just watch life go by. 💡 Pro tip: Head to Sapporo TV Tower on the eastern end for a great aerial view of the park. And if you’re here during a festival—like the Snow Festival or the Summer Beer Garden—it goes from peaceful park to full-on party real fast.
The C — Google review
An absolutely lovely park that spans several blocks beyond the TV tower station. We were lucky enough to come during the autumn fall festival which offers extensive tents and vendors selling all types of food, drink and sweets! I'd love to come back and see this in the winter

🌳 Odori Park – Sapporo’s Green Artery of Culture and Calm Odori Park is more than just a stretch of greenery—it’s the beating heart of Sapporo, offering a refreshing blend of nature, culture, and seasonal charm right in the middle of the city. Spanning over 1.5 kilometers from the iconic Sapporo TV Tower to the west end near the Shiryokan (Former Court of Appeals), the park divides the city’s downtown into north and south, acting as both a scenic corridor and a lively gathering space. Each block of the park has its own character. You’ll find beautifully maintained flower beds, fountains, sculptures, and benches perfect for people-watching or enjoying a snack from nearby vendors. In spring and summer, locals and tourists alike lounge under trees or stroll past blooming tulips and roses. Autumn brings golden foliage, and winter transforms the park into a snowy wonderland—especially during the famous Sapporo Snow Festival, when massive ice sculptures and illuminations take over the space. Odori Park also hosts seasonal events like beer gardens, food festivals, and cultural performances, making it a dynamic space year-round. Despite its central location, it retains a peaceful vibe, offering a welcome pause from the urban bustle. Whether you're walking from Nishi 11-Chome to the TV Tower or just soaking in the scenery, Odori Park is a must-visit slice of Sapporo life.
Kiet L — Google review
Odori Park is a wonderful and relaxing place to visit in Sapporo. The park is spacious, clean, and perfect for a leisurely walk. There are food stalls offering delicious snacks, which makes strolling even more enjoyable. The underground mall below is convenient and great for quick shopping or grabbing a drink. The view of the Sapporo TV Tower from the park is absolutely majestic. A great spot to unwind and take in the city.

The most famous park in Sapporo, the venue for the world famous Sapporo Ice Festival. Photos are taken in the Sapporo TV Tower. Note, that the park runs from the central of the city. Enjoy the photos.

Sights & Landmarks
The Sapporo Clock Tower, also known as the Clock Tower, is a historic wooden building that has become an iconic sightseeing spot in Hokkaido. Originally completed in 1878 as the Former Sapporo Agricultural College Drill Hall, it now houses a museum showcasing the history of Sapporo. Designated as a National Important Cultural Property, this building has close ties to Hokkaido University and is used for academic events.
Small museum with great little titbits about the university of Hokkaido and the history of sapporo. Also impressive to see the mechanism of the clocktower which is still in its original form. But what left the best impression was to have a free tour guide that speak English and could explain in detail every panels as well as awnser my questions. Another tour was happening right next to mine, so it didn't seem like a rare occurrence either. For the price and the proximity to jr station, would definitely recommend!
Felix D — Google review
Nothing really too special about this old clock house. It may have its significant at the time when it was built but it is now surrounded by modern buildings! If you pay ¥350 for a ticket to visit inside of the building but the information displayed is all in Japanese, Chinese and Korean, very few have English distribution. But the mechanical clock display inside on the second floor is very cool. Just like many other photo location, there is a stand in front of the building that is set up for taking selfie!
Steven C — Google review
Very nice museum, about the history of the building. Most explanations are translated jn English. There is also a spot inside to take pictures with a statue Dr Clark and a small shop. Visited in June, and the inside of the building was very hot despite fans and some air conditioning.
SossoOrange — Google review
You can spend 20-30 mins here in between your city walks of Sapporo, a good spot to take short break as well because there's a big sitting hall on second floor. While you taking a break from your 10,000 steps, you can read and checking the videos explaining the history of this clock tower.

A small, but historically important landmark clock tower in Sapporo city which you can visit while you’re in Sapporo!!! It is small & very old Clock tower which is representing the long history of the Sapporo city!!! For sure!!! 👍 ( not that big as you expected too!!!) :)

A unique little museum about the clock tower history in Sapporo. Quite amusing that the old mechanical clock still works and is well maintained. There was an explanation session in Japanese on how it works. Looks like they take serious pride in their jobs.
HL T — Google review
worth the visit. Learn the history of this clock tower. overall I only took less than an hour to tour its museum and exhibition. There is souvenirs shop inside too.
HkAMe — Google review
Unique clock tower. Probably one of the most prominent attractions in Sapporo. This historic site tells a tale of how Japan bought the bell from the US for a school building that eventually became this site. Pay cash at entrance to enter. There are 2 floors of history to read up. Tip, the bell rung at 12pm sharp when we are there. Paid parking at public carparks. There is a small road where you can park at the side of the tower which will be the nearest.

Observation deck
The Sapporo TV Tower, a famous landmark built in the 1950s, stands at 147.3 meters tall at the end of Odori Park in Sapporo City. Its observation deck, situated 90 meters above ground level, provides stunning panoramic views of the city and beyond. Visitors can enjoy iconic night views of Odori Park and experience thrilling transparent glass panels that slope down to their feet.
The Sapporo TV Tower is such a fun and iconic landmark right in the heart of Odori Park! 🗼✨ The view from the observation deck is amazing – you can see the whole stretch of Odori Park, the city skyline, and on a clear day even the surrounding mountains. Both day and night views are beautiful, but the evening lights of Sapporo are especially magical. The tower itself is well maintained, easy to access, and has a friendly staff that makes the experience smooth and welcoming. The little shops at the base also have some nice souvenirs unique to Sapporo. It’s not just about the view – visiting here feels like checking off a must-do cultural landmark of Hokkaido. Highly recommend adding it to your Sapporo itinerary – whether for sightseeing, photography, or simply enjoying the city from above! 🌆📸

Not as tall as the Tokyo tower but if you come on a sunny clear day it’s totally worth the visit. Amazing views of the city with a beautiful background of snowy mountains and buildings. If you are in Sapporo I would really recommend checking this tower out.

Located at Odori Park and you can see a lot of people hanging out here and along the park. I did not go up the tower but we can see the Tower from far. It was beautiful during night time as it was brighten up with colorful lights.

Iconic landmark of Sapporo, had shops outside in the base of the tower, 3rd floor, and paid observation area, and some restaurants and cafes in the basement. Provided a powerful panoramic view of the city from the observation deck

Sapporo TV Tower Park Area – Sapporo, Hokkaido A nice, clean area perfect for a relaxed walk and to soak in the city’s vibe. The park around the TV Tower is well-maintained and lively, offering great views and a pleasant atmosphere both day and night. 🌆🌿
ANIKET K — Google review
We stayed at the hotel across the street and had a lovely view of the tower at night! It’s magical to see it lit up with its dancing lights 🚥. It makes a beautiful backdrop for those music festivals in the park. The experience up the tower was meh but the view from the outside is gorgeous!
Bonnie O — Google review
This is one of the places where you get to see Sapporo on higher ground. It's right at one end of odori park and has a great view of the park. You need to buy a ticket at level 3 to get to the highest viewing platform. Overall a nice experience walking around to see the beautiful landscape of Sapporo city.
HL T — Google review
My siblings and I recently visited the Sapporo TV Tower, and it turned out to be a fun and memorable experience. This iconic landmark, located in Odori Park, offers stunning views of the city and is a must-visit for anyone exploring Sapporo. Despite the presence of numerous tourists, the overall atmosphere remained lively and enjoyable. The observation deck provides a panoramic view of Sapporo, showcasing its urban charm and surrounding natural beauty. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a seasoned traveler, the experience of seeing the city from such a height is undeniably captivating. Sapporo TV Tower is not just about the views—it’s about immersing yourself in the vibrant energy of the city. Our visit was filled with laughter, photo-taking, and quality time spent together. It's a place where memories are made and where the bustling spirit of Sapporo truly comes alive.

Shiroi Koibito Park

Amusement park
Shiroi Koibito Park in Sapporo is a family-friendly destination that offers a variety of activities and attractions. Visitors can enjoy chocolate and cookie samples, explore exhibits showcasing the making of the famous Shiroi Koibito sweets, and even take a train ride through the park's garden area. The park also features a chocolate factory tour, cooking workshops, shops, cafes, and restaurants.
We didn't want to go here, but we're so glad that we did. Neither my wife nor I are great fans of sweets, but her family love them so we thought we should go here to buy some gifts. This was an excellent decision. We only visited the extensive free areas so cannot speak for the paid ones, but we had a wonderful time (aided in no small part by fantastic weather) and would definitely recommend that others also visit, whether they like sweets or not. The park is beautiful in a kitsch mock-european fashion with pleasant gardens full of roses. The animatronic displays were entertaining, and the park was spotlessly clean. When we visited, it was nearly October so the Halloween decorations were already out and appropriate music was being piped throughout the park. The shops were well played out and the produce was of a good quality. We enjoyed an ice cream and we're especially pleased by the customised biscuit tins that we were able to buy and which were ready in just 30 minutes. It was great to be able to buy so many gifts in one place saving us from having to constantly carry presents everywhere else we went during our trip.
Richard S — Google review
It’s such a beautiful place! I visited in mid-October, right in the middle of autumn. The gardens were decorated with colorful flowers in full bloom, and the weather was just perfect. If you don’t plan to visit any of the special exhibition rooms, there’s no entrance fee — just strolling around, taking photos of the rose garden, fountains, and stunning architecture already makes the trip worth it. You only need to pay a small parking fee, which isn’t expensive at all. When you get tired from walking, there are also tasty food and drinks available to enjoy.
Indira J — Google review
Wow, what a fun place! And it only gets better if you love chocolate. The open area is already so lovely, well kept, and enjoyable even without having to pay for admission into the park proper. But it's well worth it to pay the small admission price to see the chocolate museum and factory inside! I enjoyed the "time travel" presentation, and the Halloween theme during our visit. It's such an enjoyable visit that should last at least a few hours Pro tip: watch the clock tower at the top of every hour!
Eric — Google review
For a chocolate factory there are 2 products both are covered in so much biscuit you'd be surprised this isn't a biscuit factory. The story is cute and the garden is lovely, the garden is accessible for free and so is the shop and some lovely areas. Having been to bournville in the UK when it was UK owned and again when US Kraft owned it it's going a bit rubbish but is still about 100x more entertaining than this place. Recommended for if you like some superficial nonsense for your overpriced products. But if like me you were hoping to get some chocolate from a chocolate factory give it a swerve. Or just enjoy the English sort of aesthetic of the place and the garden but know the smell of chocolate will leave you deeply disappointed and needing to visit a shop for a proper chocolate experience
Steven H — Google review
A wonderland that is both interesting and romantic. The ticket is 800 yen for adults, tourists can get access to the main building by the ticket. The main building, mostly telling stories about the history of making chocolates and the founder of this factory, is magic. And tourists can also learn how to make chocolates and cakes here. And the most impressive part I’ve learned today is that ‘white lover’ is named because the snow in Hokkaido is beautiful so that the founder’s father called it ‘white lover’. The dessert on the top of the factory was just splendid! with good view by the window, a perfect experience! Highly recommended!! And if you don’t buy tickets, the free area is also amazing, like a magic garden in a fairy tale. It’s a pity that we didn’t get enough time today, maybe next time when I come with my child, I’ll spend a whole day here!
Liz L — Google review
Highly recommend to visit in October. The park is decorated for Halloween. We paid ¥800 to tour inside which was interactive for children as well. The factory view from above was very interesting. There are also plenty of photo spots and even a ¥300 camera from above photo spot in the courtyard. We purchased customised 36-biscuit tin and magnet from the Piccadilly shop downstairs in the main building and it was ready after a 30 wait. There are some shop exclusive items, however, the biscuits are standardised price across all gift shops in Hokkaido so no need to stock up here.
Emily K — Google review
Shiroi Koibito Park is a really amazing place to visit. The whole area is very clean, visually stunning, and well-designed. The gardens and buildings are beautiful, and the chocolate exhibits and factory viewing area are interesting and worth checking out. It’s also a great spot for photos. Definitely a must-visit when you’re in Sapporo.
Yumi G — Google review
Theme park about chocolates. Entrance is free for the first floor of the building and the nearby sorrundings. There's a paid entrance for a tour of the "chocolate factory" where you can have some fun activities. The shop has selections thats not available in Sapporo. I found it every expensive though .

Nature & Parks
Nestled just 10 kilometers from downtown Sapporo, Moerenuma Park is a stunning testament to the vision of renowned sculptor Isamu Noguchi. This innovative park transforms a former landfill into an artistic haven, seamlessly blending nature and creativity. Visitors can wander through its expansive grounds, which feature geometric playgrounds, serene fountains, and even a man-made beach known as Moere Beach. The park's centerpiece is the striking Glass Pyramid that captures Noguchi's unique aesthetic.
Nice place to spend 2-3 hours. A bit out of the way. Some of the park attractions were closed during my visit for example the water fountain probably due to seasonal change. The view from the top of the hill was breathtaking and the gentle wind swaying the tall grass was quite an experience.
Mohamad B — Google review
Visited this park in Sapporo during the summer, and I have to say I was amazed by its sheer scale. The place is incredibly vast, so I’d recommend setting aside at least a full day to explore—anything less would feel like a waste. The variety here is impressive: from the glass house to the pyramid, installations, and wide open spaces, there’s so much to see and experience. The glass house can get a bit hot in summer, but overall this park is truly a gem in Sapporo and well worth visiting, even in the warmer months.

Amazing experience. Can rent bikes cheap and easily onsite. Some amazing places and stops to look at in this quite large park. Would be hard to walk to everything here without a bike. Two decent mountains to climb up as well for nice views!
Norman C — Google review
One of the best park in Sapporo. You can get the view of whole city from here. There is a prism shaped building there, it is free for you to go inside. Children have lots of area to play and people from any age group can enjoy there. I just loved the place.

The best park i have ever been to! Noguchi designed this park with a playful touch. Its like walking into a dream world with geometry playgrounds and pyramid mountains. You can also rent a bike as the park is massive.
Vanessa L — Google review
Once a forgotten landfill, this space has been beautifully transformed into a sprawling green park—thanks to the creativity and vision of the people. Now, it's a beloved place where Sapporo’s residents come to stroll, play, and bask in the gentle warmth of the sun, surrounded by trees and open skies. It’s a quiet reminder of how imagination can turn even the most unlikely places into something truly special.

Historical Village of Hokkaido

Open air museum
Museums
Nestled just outside the bustling heart of Sapporo, the Historical Village of Hokkaido is a captivating open-air museum that transports visitors back to the 19th century. Spanning an impressive area equivalent to about 11.5 Tokyo Domes, this unique attraction features over 60 meticulously reconstructed traditional wood and stone homes, showcasing life during the Meiji and Taisho periods.
The Historical Village of Hokkaido (北海道開拓の村) is a beautiful open-air museum where you can walk through the history of Hokkaido and Japan. The village collects and preserves authentic old buildings from all over the country. One of the highlights is the horse-drawn tram ride, which costs only 250 yen. It’s a relaxing and charming way to explore the area, especially if you want to rest your feet. But there is a timetable for the service. Many traditional houses are filled with old furniture, tools, and lifelike displays of how people lived in the past. Depending on the day, hands-on activities such as cow milking and manual postcard printing exist. The staff at those sites (or, as I saw in their name tag, volunteers) were energetic and tried their best to speak English. I went there during the summertime. The weather can be hot and humid, and after the rain, there might be a slightly musty smell in some areas, especially near the older wooden buildings. It’s not overwhelming, but it's good to be aware of. The site is large, so wear comfortable shoes and take your time. The atmosphere is peaceful, educational, and full of character.
Truong T — Google review
We planned to visit the Hokkaido museum and the historical village in 1 day together but couldn't because I made a mistake of going on a Monday and the former was closed. In hindsight, I don't think one can finish both in a single day, especially if you are like me and like to take in the authenticity and architecture fully. This is truly a wonderful experience and we stayed until closing time. We didn't even completely see all the buildings inside the village. Much of the structures inside are donated by the owner clans then moved and reassembled from their original context in this park. I was amazed how they capture how life was centuries ago and couldn't help but wander and imagine. Not much visitors here and the weather was good. Would definitely recommend to anyone going to Sapporo.
Jeff M — Google review
It's a worthwhile 4 hours visit for me. Got the first glimpse of autumn foliage on 19 Oct 2025, beautiful. It was a family day or something, children got free admission but as it is a huge place, the crowds were spread out. In fact it may be get spooky without a single soul in sight especially near the mountain village. Easy access by the 2-2 bus as the bus stop has clear sign on Hokkaido Historical Village, but it only runs every 30 min, so do plan your trip.

The best open air village too! We explored it with the free English guided tour which lasted 90 minutes. The guide was lovely and every house in the village worth a look. So beautiful when covered in snow! We spent around 4 hours there. Just make sure to catch the last bus which is scheduled way before the museum closes

A hidden gem! Not many tourists as compared to the shopping districts but this is a really good getaway and gives a glimpse of lives and architecture from the Meiji and Taisho Eras. Many students came here for school field trip as well. A really fun place to come with family / kids. Plenty of different houses to explore with some interactive games / sessions. The cafeteria near the main entrance was also not bad. They had many set meals. Gives a school canteen vibe and served really good いももちand ice cream. Can purchase the combo ticket of this historical village + Hokkaido museum at 1400 yen. There’s a bus that runs from shin Sapporo station to here and Hokkaido museum. Be sure to check the time for the last bus.

Very large collection of historical buildings, rather than a village. Highly recommended. Many thanks to Toshi, the volunteer guide who showed me around in English. We had interesting conversations too about Japan and it's history.
Alistair C — Google review
On our way to the place it started to rain lightly, and by the time we arrived at the museum, it was already raining harder. The rain forced us to take shelter for a while at the museum entrance, where we had a small cup of coffee. An hour passed, still raining, but a little lighter than before. So we decided to have a rainy visit to the Village. The place is an open-air museum, on the edge of Nopporo Forest, where some 60 buildings recreate the era of the colonization of Ezochi, then newly renamed Hokkaido, just 150 years ago. Here we were able to see much of the history we had learned in the museums we visited. All the buildings were open to the public (taking off your shoes), but due to the time we had left before closing time, we had to limit how much time we spent in each one. Our imaginations tried to recreate what life would have been like there back then, what it would have been like to spend the winter there (clearly unimaginable for two Chileans without a life of snow), the smell of the wet earth, the damp wood, seeing the red and orange foliage. It was a fantastic journey back in time. We would have spent an hour in each building if possible, but by the time 4:00 PM struck and the closure was announced, we still had a section left to visit. I want to come back here!
Ariel F — Google review
We visited on a Friday and besides some children on a school trip, there were barely any visitors around. It was really relaxing to just walk around the place and enjoy the nature while admiring the architecture of the buildings. I recommend coming here for a nice day out. There is also a cafeteria worth visiting if you want to take a rest.

Sights & Landmarks
Mt. Moiwa is a renowned peak in Sapporo, offering breathtaking nighttime panoramas of the city and Ishikari Bay. Visitors can ascend to the summit via a cable car or the Mt. Moiwa sightseeing expressway, followed by a ride on the unique Morris Car. The mountain is popular among locals for its accessibility and features five lightly climbed trails ranging from 2.4km to 4.5km in length.
Coming up at dusk, the 2 sections of ropeway are quite good, when the night falls, astonishing views show! So suggest no need to go up early,
Edward T — Google review
It's ok. I give this attraction 3 stars because you never really know if you would have the thick fogs blocking the scenery. We got unlucky when we went up and because our itinerary was tight, couldn't afford to use the coupon on another night. It was icy cold at the top and nothing to see but we made our own fun.
Jeff M — Google review
Nice place to view Sapporo. It is possible to drive up, but need to pay a small fee, which is less than the ropeway. Driving and the ropeway do not lead you to the top, so you’ll either need to take a paid mini cable car or hike up. The hike is generally easy and can be completed quite quickly.
Xunliang L — Google review
If you want to go here, make it in midafternoon and stay for about an hour after sunset to see the great view of Sapporo without the lights aa well as the dark city illuminated by a bevy of colors.
Jaja L — Google review
We went up at about 4.20pm to try to catch the sunset. It became rather cloudy, so the clouds ended up blocking the sunset. The night view was great but you had to stay for quite a while for the sky to darken. A lot of people were still coming up the ropeway at 6pm when we were heading off, so it seemed like the night view was way more popular than the sunset view. Heads up that by 530/545pm, you will need to queue to take the ropeway down.

23rd August 2026 Must visit Iconic View Point I hike up with my husband and had a wonderful 1.5hrs Up Up Up trail with nature & greens Upon arrival there were clean toilet at the Main station building. A cafe & a restaurant as well as souvenir shop Its clean and well organised place. We bough souvenir, had coffee and some pastry while wait for night fall Unfortunately today was a cloudy day and it was foggy and a bit windy Patience paid as there was a clear glimpse of the view from view point of Sapporo We stay until 7:30pm then went down to our surprise was we had a good 3 mins view as we take the last cable car down Memorable time created if you are thankful
Maria W — Google review
Great view over the city. The ropeway is in 2 stages, with change in the middle to the very top. Nice outside observatory platform. Great souvenir shop - restaurant a bit boring
Roland Z — Google review
Moiwayama Mountain offers an incredible view over Sapporo, especially around sunset. To get to the top, head to the cable car entrance, buy your ticket, and take the first cable car followed by another small train-like lift. The whole journey doesn’t take too long, and the view at the top is absolutely worth it. It gets quite chilly up there, even in summer, so bring an extra layer. There’s also a restaurant at the summit, but you’ll need to book several weeks in advance. Just be prepared for a bit of a queue when heading back down after sunset. Would definitely recommend it.

Hokkaido Shrine Tongu is a traditional Shinto place of worship located in the eastern island of Hokkaido. Established in 1869, it enshrines four deities and hosts the annual Sapporo Matsuri festival between June 14 and 16, featuring religious ceremonies and vibrant processions.
A habit of mine to visit different shrines while traveling, oddly, the weather was quite creepy for my visit. A blizzard occurs right before I set my way to the shrine, and it stops as soon as I complete my prayers. Typical shrine in the city of sapporo, lovely and beautiful

The solemn and tranquil atmosphere of the shrine made me feel very calm. As a tourist, visiting this place was a wonderful experience. Hokkaido in the snow is beautiful, and I think this place is definitely worth a visit. It’s free entry.

Hokkaido Shrine Tongu feels like a hidden gem quietly tucked into the city. Unlike the main shrine, it offers a more intimate and serene atmosphere, perfect for reflection. You’ll often find locals stopping by, making it feel like a genuine part of daily Sapporo life.

It is a pleasure to visit the shrine whixh is near the Nijo market. I admire the creativity of the shrine's caretakers, who sweep the fallen sakura into a heart shape. Within the shrine building, there is a restroom and a shop selling lucky charms.

Really close to my office so I often come to worship… but today i asked for their goshuin… happy… This shrine is branch of Hokkaido jingu at maruyama. Tongu was builded on 11th of meiji era… back then the main shrine was far and hard to visit due the snowfall in the winter… so they build small one in central sapporo city… People believe, Tongu become a place where God take a rest after observing the area, before they back to the main Shrine… ☺️お疲れ様です。 Omamori, they sell matchmaking and couple omamori. The Ema is designed with komainu on it so cute… Ooo.. they have 子投安産・家内安全の狛犬, komainu with her baby statue…

Sights & Landmarks
Hokkaidō Government Office, also known as the Former Government Office Building, is a striking red-brick structure dating back to the 1880s. This historical landmark boasts an American Neo-Baroque architectural style and has been designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Inside, visitors can explore exhibits on Hokkaido's history and view the meticulously detailed Ezo Taigaizu map created by Matsuura Takeshiro.
I came here in summer 2023 and the government office building was under construction. And the front was covered. This time I got to see the real building which was very beautiful but still inside was under renovation until July 2025. Giving me more reasons to come back to visit. There’s a spot on the left side facing the building. A bridge on the pond which reminded me of Monet’s painting.

It is a beautiful place that the garden portion is opens to public. I think~ The garden itself is beautiful too with large trees, flower beds and couple ponds. I can see people sitting on the bench throughout the park next by the water or under the trees! The tulip is blooming at the time when I visit it. Great place for some nice photos!
Steven C — Google review
We visited the Former Hokkaido Government Office, affectionately known as the Red Brick Office, during our walk around Sapporo and were pleasantly surprised by how charming it was. The red-brick architecture really stands out in the city—it’s elegant, classic, and photogenic from every angle. Even though restoration works were ongoing, the surrounding gardens were still open and beautifully maintained. We strolled through paths lined with flowers and trees, and there were plenty of spots to stop for photos or just enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. Inside, we explored some of the history exhibits and even saw a reconstruction of the Governor’s office. It’s not a huge museum, but it’s rich in Hokkaido’s heritage and doesn’t take long to explore. This place felt like a calm, green pause in the middle of the city and gave us a meaningful glimpse into Hokkaido’s past. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Sapporo.

Beer hall
Sapporo Beer Garden is a must-visit destination for beer and barbecue enthusiasts. Located in a former factory, it offers contemporary spaces for enjoying draft beers and all-you-can-eat barbecues. The cluster of restaurants within the garden includes atmospheric European beer halls and the more refined Garden Grill restaurant. Visitors can savor Sapporo's iconic dish jingisukan, featuring tender lamb meat and seasonal vegetables cooked on a special metal dome-skillet.
Good grilled hot pan. What recommended was the lamp and variety of sapporo beer! 🍺 The atmosphere kinda feels like canteen but people come here to have a good time in a big table or group. With the snow outside make the vibe always feel like Christmas! 🎄 😆
WWendy W — Google review
The taste and atmosphere at the Sapporo Beer Garden were truly excellent. We really enjoyed our time there. One downside, however, was that we were a group of four, and one of us is a vegetarian. We had to order the meat buffet for all four of us and then add a separate seafood dish just for the vegetarian, which was a bit disappointing. Still, it’s definitely worth visiting at least once!
Ellen — Google review
The beer from here on tap tastes much better than the canned Sapporo I'm used to. Good selection of alcoholic beverages even with the cheapest all you can drink option. Food was fantastic, it's set up in a style in which there is a slight grade on the grille so juices from meat being grilled on the center will move down to the sides and infuse with the vegetables cooking on the edges. When you ordered more lamb, pork, chicken, drinks, etc on the tablet provided workers or serving robots will be bringing it to your table within 30-60 seconds. Bags were provided as well to customers to put jackets in if needed to keep them from smelling like smoke, I found it to be far less smokey inside though then other grill your own meat places I've been to in the past.

Not a beer fan, but this was part of our must see list. The 1-hour free tour of the museum was interesting. Learned about Sapporo beer’s humble beginnings & its remarkable journey through the years. Tried the much talked about Genghis Khan meal at the Lilac Hall. Reservation required. Tried booking in for a weekend but they filled out quickly. Ended up with a Monday reservation instead. It was easier for us to take the 88 bus from our hotel as this drove straight to the venue.
Cynthia R — Google review
This is a review for the restaurant only. I did not go in the museum or shops. Reservation is required, and I could not find out how to book online. You need to call them. It turns out there were different buildings, and I didn't know which one to enter. I gave the host my confirmation number, and he directed me where to go. I opted for the all-you-can-eat for ¥7500 a person and the all-you-can-drink (alcohol) ¥1800. (For soft drinks only, it is ¥800.) There were many cuts of lamb. You place the first order with the server, but the rest of the time you can order via tablet. I thoroughly enjoyed the meal. The lamb egg roll was surprisingly delicious! At the end of the meal, of course the smoke smell will cling to your hair and clothes. They gave me a plastic bag to cover my belongings and place it in the bin under the seat. After eating, you notify the server that you are ready to pay. Then you bring the slip/clipboard out to the cashier. Credit card accepted. Bathroom available. Wifi - unsure

The Sapporo Beer Garden, Day three First order of the day was to get a pair of replacement shoes, a corn was too demanding & shoes to tight, found an amazing store (Shoe-Plaza) and they had my size, trip saved! Now that I could potter along, the boss suggested we try the Sapporo Beer Garden! Off we went, and once again, driving in Japan is such a pleasure, I wish we had that kind off attitude, courtesy and all in Singapore & Malaysia! But I think there is a fat chance that will ever happen! 😢 The Beer Garden, right next to the Beer Museum, had both inside & outdoor seating, we opted for the outdoors, albeit overcast it was still very comfy! Service was swift, our server spoke decent English helped us with our order (normally they put a pad in your hands & you click & order) The place specialises on Lamb, but beef, seafood & veggies also available, albeit a small selection! You cook yourself, on the grill pretty much the same as Korean BBQ, which is fun & you always have the hottest food to savour! The beer of course was exceptional, perfect for this type of cookery! We had Squid & Prawn for madam, the squid was perfect! Me of course Lamb shoulder sliced, they had the set called Genghis Khan which included veggies, I added the Beef fingers as they called it, plus a baked potato of sorts, with butter, best I had in years! But be aware, only one type of sauce/dip served, had a bit of a teriyaki flavour! Food was good, service perfect, over all ambience Smokie but fun! Value for money for sure! We enjoyed this, and it sees to be a massively popular spot for the locals! (Indoor seating 90 minutes wait, but advance reservation accepted! #sapporo #Japantravels #MarketAdventures #gourmettravels #selfdrivingholidays #hokkaido #sapporobeergarden #sapporobeer #sapporobrewery

I loved the Genghis Khan grilled lamb—it was tender and flavorful. The all-you-can-eat yakiniku was a great value, and grilling it myself made the experience even more fun. Excellent beer selection, friendly staff, and beautiful brewery-style decor. Highly recommend!

Delicious food at a great price! Got the 2 hrs AYCE course for 4500 yen which came with some entrés and more cuts of meat compared to the 3800 yen course. The entrés were good (I ate some before taking a picture.) The meat was delicious. I enjoyed cooking it, letting it rest in the sauce and then devouring them 😋

The restaurant offers a wide range of crab species, including snow crab, hair crab, and horsehair crab, prepared in unexpected yet delightful ways such as shabu shabu, tempura, and sashimi.
Refined dining experience in Sapporo. You are greeted by attentive staff who will serve you throughout your dining journey at the restaurant. The lunch time luxury crab set is reasonably priced and came with plenty of crab and adjacent dishes. Could not fault any dish - all delicious. Absolutely recommended place if you're visiting Sapporo - be sure to book early as they run out of spots very quick!

Do yourself a favour and try this place - was my most memorable meal of our Japan holiday and the freshest, fattest and naturally sweet crab I’ve ever had. You are served in a private room and each course has carefully been prepared so that you can basically eat the crab with very minimal peeling. Service was impeccable and although it was a pricey meal, was very reasonable for the experience! Truly sensational and a highlight of Sapporo. Also, parking can be validated in the next door car park so that it is discounted.

Tradition restaurant with top notch food and service. King crab is amazingly fresh and delicious. Reservation was made 1.5 months prior. Selected a course meal that serves 5 different ways of preparation (raw, grill, hot-pot, steam, tempura style) and end of with porridge from the water from steam pot. Even the sherbet dessert is amazingly smooth and fine. An indulging experience. Does help when one speaks Japanese to the service staff. She was amazing patient and served us with her heart.

One of the highlights in Sapporo for us. I booked the restaurant for 6 people, and everything was just perfect. The king crabs were the highlight obviously, and you'd get to taste the crab cooked in different ways. The service by the waitresses (one of whom was a trainee) were impeccable as well. Rounded the night perfectly for us. It was a memory to remember, and if possible I'd like to visit the restaurant again if possible.

This restaurant is actually on the third floor. There are both elevator and stairs. For lunch, the last order is at 2 PM even though they close at 3 PM. The menu is in English. We were seated inside a private room where we had to remove our shoes. We sat on the pillow on the ground. A lady server had to come in and out to bring all the stuff, including shabu shabu personal stove and even a grill for the grilled crabs. For lunch, I ordered the set menu ¥6820: appetizer, cold dish, udon, shabu shabu, crab croquette, and sherbet dessert. The food was excellent. I was so excited to try the fresh crab in Hokkaido! -Credit card accepted. -Free Wifi (the sign is on the elevator, but I didn't find any in the room)

I was lucky enough to get the opportunity to go here and I quite enjoyed all of the food! It seems the menu changes often but rest assured you will enjoy it and the service is top notch. A must try if you can ! They even accommodated my allergies as well which I really appreciate. Please take a look.

We enjoyed most of the course meal dishes prepared using local produce, and we noticed great efforts taken in food plating & presentation. However, we couldn't appreciate the grilled eniwa pork's gamey taste and the overly warm heated dining area.

Friendly staffs, and nice view. Two good points I could see. But the quality of the food were absolutely below the expectations. I spent almost ten thousands yen and firstly found some dust in the glass, then I tasted the unbalanced in flavour of each dish, found the shell of lobster left inside the souffle, found that the meat cooked unqually, and until I finished the meal, Ive not found anything that I like enough to make me want to come back. Even the dessert were kind of disappointing. I was hoping for so much more and I now feel like I shouldn't have had select to go there

The Kirin Beer Garden new building Urban store is a large beer hall located in Hokkaido, Japan's top potato farming region. The spacious venue can accommodate up to 180 people and offers horigotatsu seating. Visitors can enjoy Genghis Khan, a local lamb dish, along with freshly brewed beer. One of the highlights is the jaga-bata, a delicious creation made from Hokkaido's famous potatoes.
Located at level 7f. Do not take lifts which takes you to only level 6. There is another lift lobby which brings u to level 7f. Ordered 'All-you-can-eat' Genghis Khan, Assorted seafood, Atka mackerel and 2 bowls of rice. Mackerel is a must, taste delicious! Meat was a close second and seafood was good too! Staffs were courteous and always assist you if in need. Price wise, a little pricey for 2 pax but it was worth it. Come early to beat the crowd. They open at 5pm.

We reserved a table online for the 100-minute free-flow BBQ at Kirin Beer Garden in the Urban Sapporo building. The package offers four types of meat—beef, mutton, pork, and chicken—along with a free-flow veggie set (bean sprouts, onions, and cabbage). However, drinks are not included, and each cup is charged separately. If you’re craving seafood, that’s an additional charge too. From the moment you enter, the smell of BBQ fills the air—a hint of the ventilation issues inside. Walking to our table, we noticed the smoke visibly lingering throughout the restaurant. If you’re dining here, be prepared to leave smelling like BBQ! On the bright side, they do offer plastic bags for jackets, which helps keep the smoky scent off your outerwear. The meat quality was fairly average. The beef, in particular, was quite fatty and tough, clearly not a premium cut. For the price, it’s hard to complain, but don’t go in expecting top-notch quality. It’s a heavy meal overall, so it might not be for everyone. On the positive side, the service was excellent! The staff were all incredibly friendly, attentive, and efficient, which really added to the experience and made the meal more enjoyable. Overall, while the service shines, the food and ventilation could use some improvement. It’s an okay option if you’re a fan of table BBQ, but there are likely better spots to explore in Sapporo.

Great place to try Hokkaido's famed "Genghis Khan" mutton barbecue. We opted for both the all you can eat and all you can drink options and had a great time trying various drinks from their extensive drinks menu, as well as different types of meats and vegetables, including seafood. Seems to be quite reasonable for the price and what you get. I recommend wearing clothes that you do not mind getting dirty or smelly as it is inevitable that you will smell like barbecue and smoke.

The restaurant is located at the seventh floor of the building. It is not halal certified but claimed to be muslim friendly. Basically it is an all you can eat restaurant. We only ordered lamb meat and assorted vegetable to be grilled. The lamb combined with been sprouts, cabbage tasted delicious. They provided plastic apron in order to prevent the smell of the smoke stays on your clothes. When we visitted the table almost full but fortunately we could get the table thanks to advance reservation.

A little pricey for the genghis khan lamb compared to some other locations. Quality was good though as was the icy beer in the Sapporo heatwave. Be aware it can be quite smokey with all the bbqs cooking. We were able to walk in and get a table which was great.

They have halal menu. So this is a review on their halal menu. Halal meat limited only to the lamb meat. If you don't like ur lamb only eaten with salt & pepper, then this place is not for u, because the meat is not marinated at all. They do give u (halal) soy sauce though. For the all-u-can-eat Genghis Khan they only give u lamb meat, cabbage & bean sprouts. Which is totally not worth paying ¥2,980 for it. Untuk orang melayu, tu RM114 ye. Amat tak berbaloi. If you're not a big eater, can just opt for the single plate lamb (90g). I made the mistake of ordering the all-u-can-eat Genghis Khan and ended up struggling to finish the 2 plates that they gave. Restaurant is poorly ventilated. The moment u come in u can see the smoke & smell the meat. The smell sticks to ur clothes & ur hair.

First meat meal in Sapporo. Muslim friendly restaurant. Located on the 7th floor in a building across from Mega. Ordered two Gengkhis Khan set for two people. Meat was soft and delicious. Came with assorted vegetables too. It would be better if they have a variety of sauces to dip in. They only have soy sauce. There is lamb smell if you grill the meat without dipping in the soy sauce first. You can smell lamb on your clothes after the meal but it’s alright it’s a good experience! Staff was friendly and food came quick!! 👍👍

An excellent meal. The delicacy of the batter is remarkable. The atmosphere is friendly and fun, and I felt very welcome as the only foreigner. Lots of laughter and good conversation. My favorite dishes were the fried peanut, sweet corn, and the deep fried sweet potato and ice cream. However everything was delicious. If I had to give a critique it would be that the pacing felt slightly fast, but it might be me. 素晴らしい食事をありがとうございました。

I usually don’t go for tempura, but wanted to try something new during our visit to Sapporo. My husband and I booked a reservation for the tempura omakase (20 servings). Before the meal, i was concerned about it being heavy, but it felt just right! Each serving was light. I could taste the freshness of the springtime vegetables, and the differences in batter/frying of the shrimp courses (4 out of 20 for ours). All the courses were delicious. Definitely one of my most favorite tasting menus to date! We were the only foreigners out of ?8 or 9 diners, but we felt very welcome. If/when I return to Sapporo, I would definitely go back to Araki!

They spoke English well here and was very easy to communicate our needs as foreigners. The food and dining: -If you are a Tempura connoisseur like I am, you’ll enjoy the different assortment of tempura items -The batter is light and airy. -The dipping sauce was incredible and they were not stingy with the serving either! -We never felt rushed throughout the experience. -The food was very filling as it was a 20 course meal! -The quality of every dish was exceptional. Highlight dishes: -Fried fig with sprinkle of salt= AMAZING -Lightly fried shrimp tempura with yuzu and salt -Medium fried shrimp tempura with tempura dipping sauce I highly recommend the once in a lifetime experience to dine at this Michelin rated restaurant!

One of the most famous tempura omakase in Sapporo and it is essential to secure a booking via omakase.in The meal offers a variety of fresh ingredients ranging from vegetables to seafood; in particular the Kisu and Anago tempura are impressive. The tempura sweet potato for the dessert is also quite remarkable. Service is also very nice and attentive, with a nice waiter who can speak Cantonese, English, and Japanese, an undoubtedly welcoming presence for foreign visitors Overall, a very enjoyable experience with great food and excellent service (More on Instagram: Gaga.bichon)

28022024 I tried Tempura Omakase for the first time but didn't pick the best day for it. I think a customer next to me and chef knew each other or a friend. They talked loudly the whole time. It felt like eating in a busy street, not a quiet restaurant, and it makes me hard to focus on the food. The food was amazing, but I wish I could have enjoyed it more without the noise. It felt more like a casual place than a fancy restaurant. A quieter setting would have made the meal perfect.

The dishes were indeed refined and overall tasty, but considering its popularity, …I wasn’t super impressed. And it’s a bit of a pity I didn’t get to enjoy the atmosphere at the counter.
FooKie — Google review
We are not usually fans of tempura cuisine but this was probably as good as tempura gets. The batter was light and not oily, and remained crisp! Ingredients were fresh and the batter brought out the best of these. We had an assortment of seasonal items like seasonal greens and mantis shrimp. There was a wide variety of fish, shellfish and vegetables. The sake collection was also very good. Chef speaks some English but the wait staff were able to translate ingredients competently. He makes you feel welcome so you wouldn't feel intimidated or out of place!

Crab house
Kani Honke Sapporo station Ekimae is a renowned crab restaurant located in Sapporo, Hokkaido. This century-old establishment offers a refined dining experience with a traditional timber interior and serves an array of sophisticated seafood dishes featuring the finest-tasting crab from the cold waters around Hokkaido. The restaurant's menu includes various crab varieties such as king crab and hairy crab prepared as sashimi, steamed, or grilled to highlight their flavors.
One of the famous and popular seafood (King crab and snow crab) specialty restaurant. Reservation highly recommended.. We ordered set menu @ little over ten thousand Japanese yen per person. Every dish placed in front of us can be called a piece or art. And taste also match how it looked! They also have a great list for Japanese sales to choose from. It is great compliment to such nice meal. Only thing I wish they can improve as the English speaking for the waitresses. The communication was English speaking. Customer is quite difficult with the waitresses. But I can tell they tried very hard to and eventually understood each other.

Ordered a crab course and a whole hairy crab with a la carte sides. Everything was very tasty and the service was top-notch. Ambience and atmosphere was inviting and relaxing. Price was reasonable for what you're getting.

A great restaurant with a long history of serving amazing crab cuisine. The crabs we had were very fresh and the service was great. The air conditioning we find not as ideal though and while the building is historical, we wish they have done something to upgrade it while keeping the essence of their story and history. Overall still a great place to go!

We came to the store on a Saturday evening. Had to wait an hour before we were seated so we were given a queue number. The shop has a very quaint and traditional feel, and we were given a private room to enjoy our food in peace. The service was very prompt and the food portions are generous and yummy! 🦀 The crab nabe (hotpot) is soooo good, and the porridge made at the end was also super delicious. Definitely recommend if you want to experience Japanese traditional dining, and enjoy a yummy crabby meal!

Excellent dining experience with the crab meals. Various options available. It's pricier than your usual meal, but for what is given, I think it is considered reasonable. Service was good as well. It's packed, so better to make a reservation. Walking distance from Sapporo train station.
Chiun T — Google review
Mixed feelings about the meal. If we were to recommend, go for the ~9000 yen set with crab hotpot, the crab legs taste sweeter when boiled and the staff helps to make a porridge out of the broth at the end of the meal. We also ordered the 20,000+ yen set and it was underwhelming, while they served crabs cooked in various methods, the crabs didn’t taste sweet but very dry and lack freshness. The premium part was probably only the crab leg sashimi

Mutton barbecue restaurant
Sapporo Genghis Khan (Main Shop) is a cozy restaurant located just a 5-minute walk from Susukino Station in Sapporo's downtown. It specializes in Genghis Khan, a grilled mutton dish that is popular in Hokkaido. The restaurant offers personal grills at the counter seats, allowing guests to cook their own meats and vegetables. The top-grade New Zealand lamb used here is exceptionally fresh and lacks any unpleasant odor, making it enjoyable for everyone.
This is quite a life changing experience, having try the lamb in Sapporo for the first time. The meat is really moist and not smelly at all. Very hospitable owner. Recommended
Jason C — Google review
We found this restaurant while searching for lamb, which is one of Sapporo's specialty foods. The restaurant is located inside a building, so it is not visible from the main street. There was quite a long queue during dinner time. As soon as we entered the restaurant, we were greeted by clouds of smoke filling the entire room, which was quite irritating to the eyes, along with the distinctive aroma of grilled meat. The restaurant provides a wardrobe for hanging coats, equipped with plastic covers to prevent them from absorbing too much smoke—though many people did not bother to close the plastic cover after opening it. The restaurant's layout is quite unique, as there is only one long circular table surrounding the staff who cut the lamb. The female staff responsible for cutting the meat was very skilled at trimming off almost all the fat. The male staff member attending to customers could speak English, making it easier for guests to place their orders. The meat itself was quite delicious, even though it was served immediately after being cut, without any marinade. It was very tender and had no unpleasant odor. The dipping sauce provided paired perfectly with the meat. After finishing the meal, the remaining sauce was diluted with hot water, turning it into a kind of soup that helped cleanse the greasy aftertaste of the lamb.

Very simple menu but it’s delicious. Great for a treat of grilled lamb here. It’s a small joint and quite smoky inside. Suggest to make reservation in advance or can try your luck to queue and wait. It’s inside the building, not visible right on the street.

Revisited this genghis khan store after many years (it used to be on the second floor up some stairs in an old wooden room). We used to call this place "the lamb grill where my grandma's appetite suddenly doubled" since that was one of the times she actually finished all her meat and rice and asked for more from the rest of us. The current location and decor has lost some of the charm. Ventilation is as bad as ever so expect to smell like smoke when coming out. At least my jacket was protected in a wardrobe. One of the lady chefs still cuts the meat out in front and trims the fat (the last time it was an elderly man with spectacles). The meat is served unmarinated and is mainly lean meat. I really prefer this place over some other genghis khan restaurants due to the lack of marinade. Some other restaurants use a strong marinade (sometimes garlicky, sometimes sweet) which covers the freshness and smell of the lamb. The dipping sauce and rice are as good as ever. We finished 3 plates of meat each and were very satisfied with the meal.
Ronnie N — Google review
First time eating Genghis khan lamb. It was really delicious and tasty also no smells of lamb like what i think before. The signature sauce of this restaurant was fantastic indeed love it so much Everyone got lamb set 1 by 1 and you can add order more later. After you had finished your meal they gave you the jasmine tea which is really fresh and calm Definitely going back again ❤️❤️

It's a simple menu. When you sit the table will be set with the jingisukan grill with a fat blob on top and onion. You'll get one portion / plate of lamb meat per person and can order: • sides like kimchi • sides to grill like garlic, garlic shoots, veggies • rice (would recommend plain rice which goes well with the meat and dipping sauce) Sauce is given per person and you can add raw garlic and chili powder to it. When you're done they will tip away much of your remaining sauce and add hot water leaving you with a soup. The place is v down to earth and no frills. The meat is lean so if you wants various fatty cuts you may want to go elsewhere (although the guy next to us ordered a lamb rib so you could ask for other cuts but it's not on the menu)

If you're in the mood for decent lamb BBQ served with a side of hostility, this is the place for you! Took my family and our 2-year-old son for what we hoped would be a nice meal — instead, we got a masterclass in how not to treat paying customers. The owner welcomed us with all the warmth of a malfunctioning robot. No smile, no greeting, and — plot twist — no water. I guess hydration is a premium add-on here? The food? Not bad! The lamb was tasty. But it’s hard to enjoy your meal when you're being treated like an inconvenience for daring to exist. I didn’t know eating BBQ came with emotional damage. Would I go again? Only if I’m feeling too happy and need to be humbled.
Deuel T — Google review
i visited Genghis Khan for dinner with my husband on my honeymoon holiday and it's easily the best lamb we've ever tasted. the entire place was filled with locals and we were the only foreigners dining tonight, which made us stick out like a sore thumb hahahaha but thankfully the staff were extremely friendly and helpful! they gave us an "information sheet" with instructions in English and they made sure to let us feel at ease while dining. we ordered 2 of their "special" rice and both were equally great. we were served with 2 plates of their lamb and we decided to order another plate because it was so good. the lamb was naturally sweet on its own, and i can confidently say I've never tasted lamb so tender and so soft before. each piece of lamb made me crave for yet another piece. we also ordered extra asparagus and I'm really not sure what the Japanese do to everything, but they sure make everything taste better. the asparagus had a slight buttery taste which made me a little confused (in a good way, though) and i truly enjoyed every bite of the asparagus! I'm honestly not one to appreciate vegetables as I'm more of a meat person but i found myself finishing most of the asparagus. the onions they served were naturally sweet as well, and it soaked up all of the lamb fat and flavor after being grilled on the hot plate. YUM. we really wanted to order a fourth plate to share but i decided not to, as we'll save it for our next visit here. the restaurant is relatively easy to locate as well, we're first timers in Sapporo and had little difficulty searching for the restaurant. do note that the ventilation in the restaurant is not very good, and you'll walk out of the place with your clothes and hair smelling like barbecue. but it's 100% worth it, i promise you. the total bill came up to about 5,400 yen which is extremely reasonable for the sheer amount and the quality of the meat. will be back again and again and again and again.

Suage+ is a popular dining spot located on the second floor of a building in Susukino district, known for its long queues during dinner time. The restaurant offers the unique option to add squid ink to your curry, along with add-ons like cheese or egg and a choice of 5 spiciness levels. Despite its name, the 'super spicy' level is not overly hot.
Staff was very friendly and ordering was easy by scanning QR code. I ordered premium lamb, medium spicy. Which was not very spicy to me but, it had a good flavorful. Probably could have gone to Spicy. The others I was ordered “sweet” which was the least spicy. The lamb was juicy and flavorful would recommend. Picture shows small rice you can get medium rice upgrade for free but if want large there is additional charge.

I ordered the chicken soup curry, which seemed to be the most popular dish. What stood out wasn’t so much the broth itself, but the quality of the ingredients inside. The vegetables and meat were incredibly fresh and high quality. With many curry dishes, the strong curry flavor often overwhelms everything else, but here each ingredient retained its own natural taste. The balance was really well done. It’s a popular restaurant, so expect a bit of a wait.
Johnny K — Google review
Ordered the squid ink special seafood curry and the normal soup yuzu pepper pork zangi curry. The normal soup is solid. Found the queue system very confusing. Got there around 6PM and waited about 20 minutes for a seat. Service was fast once we got in.
Hannah C — Google review
The place is quite dark and intimate. Located on the 2nd floor, the queue extends down to the 1st floor, where you wait to be called inside. The original soup is good, but the squid ink one is fantastic. All the ingredients are standard, but the potatoes are exceptionally delicious. Spicy level 6 is just right. For a side dish, the Pork Zangi is a yummy recommendation.

A group of 3 people visited on a friday for lunch at around 1pm without a reservation. The restaurant is located on the 2nd floor and there was a line to go in. We only had to wait around 10 minutes and got a table. You have to scan the QR code on your table and then order from your phone. The menu is available in different languages. Since the restaurant was packed our food came after about 15 minutes of ordering. The soup curry was good. Payment can only be made in cash and PayPay.

You can only taste soup curry in Sapporo. Soup was very good and the pork was extremely tender. However, it gets little bit oily. We waited about half an hour to get in. Staffs are nice and very kind.

I love the soup curry here. We tried the original soup (they have squid ink or shrimp soup as well) with level 5 and 6 spicy level. It’s about right and not too hot. Crispy Shiretoko chicken curry was good. The pork fillet zangi with yuzu pepper was good as well; the yuzu is the good refreshing twist into the soup. We went there about 6:15 pm on Saturday and there was no queue yet but when we left about 7:30, there were about 7-8 people in line. Overall really recommended for those who wanna try soup curry, their ingredients are fresh and great and the soup was light and tasty.

Ramen Shingen's Minami 6 jo branch is a popular traditional Japanese restaurant in Sapporo known for its rich and flavorful ramen, particularly the local favorite, Sapporo miso ramen. The L-shaped counter can only accommodate a limited number of people at a time, leading to frequent lines outside.
One of the best ramen I’ve tasted. Broth is thick and generous portion of char siu. Queue is long. I was there 20min before opening and the queue is already snaking. Must have time and the patience to eat here.

This easily the best Ramen we ever had. Their shio Ramen that my wife ordered is very delicious. Better than their miso ramen. BIG Minus point is the waiting time. We started queue at 10.00 pm and we sit down at around 00.50 AM. Almost 3 hours queue 🥲. At first we only saw about 20 people queue and we think : yeah maybe only 1 to 1,5 hour queue. But what surprised us when we right in front the door. Suddenly some people come out from house next to the ramen shop and go in. And later we were brought to that house. And what we found ? About 30-40 more people inside are making a line to queue 😑. Man if we know the line this long we will walk away and find other ramen shop. side notes while queuing we didn't hear anyone speak other than Japanese. seems almost all people that queueing that night are locals. there is some fun things when the staff come to us and give us the menu so he can collect order first. my wife asked for the english language menu. he look at our east asian face and show us Japanese menu and we told him again : "English menu please , we can't speak Japanese " (while smiling). and finally he gave us the English menu 😁 I think he kinda surprised to find foreigners queueing at late night ? 😁

The best ramen I had in Sapporo! The pork was amazing, and the soup was delicious too. There’s usually a long line, so try to go during off-peak hours. Totally worth queuing!
Lid M — Google review
Great ramen, but I wouldn't say it's the best! Was it worth the wait (which was 1 hr for us), maybe not. However, it was delicious regardless. The ramen came in these massive bowls which were bigger than my face. The pork chunks, however, were super tender and flavorful. The broth also wasn't too salty. The service was amazing though! A young male waiter made sure to double check our order since we didn't speak Japanese, but he got everything correct and was super patient with us, despite the long line. Overall, the experience was great, but I'm sure there would be better ramen places elsewhere.

my fav miso ramen - the pork slices are lean and huge. Broth is just right. Maybe adding ginger would have been perfect. I will try the fried rice next time!
Joshua N — Google review
I waited 45 minutes. It was delicious and very affordable. If you don't mind waiting a bit, go there. Is it worth it? I think yes. Only downside it's kinda stressful. You are being watched by at least a couple of ppl while you eat. It felt like I have to eat quickly, which you absolutely don't have to but the pressure is real. Food is great tho.

Long wait (40 minutes) even at 3pm on a Wednesday but ultimately was worth it. Broth was very well done, noodles cooked to perfection, and gyoza was a nice add on.

Donburi Chaya is a cozy store located in Nijo Market, offering over 30 different seafood rice bowls to choose from, along with seasonal menus and daily specials. The restaurant is largely popular due to word of mouth and offers a variety of fresh seafood options. Additionally, there is a branch in Otaru that provides halal seafood options for visitors.
We used this restaurant for breakfast when travelling to Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. 8:00-9:00 am. We travelled early in the morning from our hotel and were seated with no waiting time. You can have a set meal of grilled fish for 250 yen. There are two types of seafood bowls: a normal bowl and a half bowl. The regular bowl seemed to have a larger amount of vinegared rice. You will be full from breakfast. The half bowl has a smaller amount of rice, but the fish was satisfying. I am satisfied with my breakfast.

Everything was closing at the market and we were afraid it was too late to have lunch. Thankfully Doburi Chaya came to the rescue. It’s open later than most other stores and is welcoming to lunch stragglers like us. We ordered two rice bowls. One was tuna on rice. The other was assorted fish and seafood. Both were good quality and fresh. It wasn’t the best fish we’ve had in Japan but it still rated highly for us, particularly with the friendly service and late opening. Check it out.

Fresh and awesome donburi bowls. I think the salmon, especially the fatty salmon, are the best I have eaten. So good that we reordered 3 portions of the fatty salmon (380yen for 2 pieces) Interestingly, you can customise your bowl. The chef could remember our orders without making notes and that was amazing. We recommended a family, who is also in Sapporo, to visit the place. We totally enjoyed it and hope to revisit soon.

Just really great service and top notch food. Loved my grilled mix seafood kaisendon and the overall halal inclusivity. It’s open early and there is usually a queue which moves pretty fast depending on what time you go. The prices are also relatively more affordable to other places in Nijo market. Also kind of difficult to find the place but just enter from the back alley and surely you will find it.

Transportation in Sapporo

Getting around Sapporo can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Nearby airports

New Chitose Airport

Airport
Domestic airport
International airport
New Chitose Airport is the main gateway to Hokkaido, Japan's northern island, attracting tourists with its snow, seafood, ramen, sweets, and hot springs. The airport offers various attractions to keep travelers entertained during layovers or delays. These include a hot spring complex, a cinema, and two small theme parks - Doraemon Exciting Sky Park and Hello Kitty Happy Flight.
New Chitose Airport is honestly my favorite airport in Japan! It’s not just a place to catch a flight — it’s a destination in itself. There are tons of souvenir shops, selling everything from sweets and snacks to high-quality local products. So many options to choose from — you’ll want to spend extra time here, trust me. There are also plenty of cute photo spots and check-in areas, making it fun even before your flight. And if you’re flying domestic, you’ll be surprised how enjoyable the experience is — smooth, organized, and full of charm. Get your luggage ready, because you might leave with a lot more than you came with!
Nana R — Google review
Nice, clean, and comfortable airport. It’s not huge, but has a good selection of restaurants and shops for travelers. We arrived early, so many eateries were still closed—most open at 9:00. Facilities are well-maintained, and signage makes it easy to get around. Security and check-in were smooth. There are souvenir shops selling Hokkaido specialties like Shiroi Koibito cookies and Royce chocolates, great for last-minute gifts. Seating is comfortable, with plenty of charging spots. There’s also a kids’ play area and an on-site hot spring. The airport feels organized and relaxed, making it a pleasant place to start or end a trip.
Pechaporn P — Google review
New Chitose Airport is a great example of how a regional hub can feel both modern and welcoming. The terminal is impressively clean with a warm, airy design — lots of natural light, wood accents, and an inviting layout that makes waiting for flights less stressful. Before departure, the airport really shines. There are plenty of food options, from casual Hokkaido specialties like soup curry, ramen, and seafood bowls, to popular cafés and bakeries, plus well-stocked souvenir shops filled with local chocolates and dairy products. It’s easy to enjoy a proper meal or pick up last-minute gifts before your flight. However, once you pass through customs and security, the choices narrow considerably. The post-immigration area has only a few shops and dining spots, which can feel underwhelming compared to the lively pre-departure zone. Travelers who want variety are better off eating or shopping before crossing into the secure area. Overall, though, New Chitose is a very good airport: clean, efficient, and friendly, with a touch of Hokkaido charm. It provides a smooth travel experience, especially for those connecting between domestic and international flights, and makes a great final stop before leaving the island.

Update 2 (14/11/2025): I took my domestic flight going to Osaka and have 2 hours to roam at this airport. Feels like a mall with an airport. Too many stores selling souvenirs. It can get really overwhelming especially if you have limited luggage. I think it's the same price in Tanukikoji Shopping Street. Extremely efficient airport. From leaving the plane, to immigration and customs, took me only 10minutes. This os one of the best airport in Japan.
JP T — Google review
Probably the best airport I've been to and I've been to a lot. It's not the newest or the most architecturally stunning airport but it has the most to offer. Countless places to gwt some great food at a good price, a beer or even some unique souvenirs at a great price which is rare at airports. One architectural point of note is the long arc of the terminal, which allows one a view of the planes and runway at any gate. Tip: if it's too busy near your gate, just walk away to a quieter spot and get a seat and a view. Just make sure you get to your gate on time!

I would like to thank staff at the Tourist Information Centre. We landed in Chistose from Brisbane and went to an English speaking staff member on the day we landed and she saw our drafted itinerary with day trip from Sapporo. The lady that helped us was kind and very helpful, she helped us organise our Otaru and Cape Kumari day trip. Where we were thinking of paying over 3 times on a taxi, she organised our Shako Shuttle Bus to Cape Kumai from Bikuni and saved a lot of money. The shakotan peninsula was beautiful and she reserved our seats and gave us a time to leave Otaru to Bikuni. We are most grateful to her for scheduling our shuttle bus.

Sights & Landmarks
Points of Interest & Landmarks
Cape Chikyu, situated at the southern end of Muroran City, is a stunning scenic area featuring a lighthouse and expansive views of the Pacific Ocean. Perched approximately 120 meters above sea level, it boasts a 310,000 candlepower lighthouse, spacious observatory, hiking trails, and parking facilities. On clear days, visitors can marvel at sights like Mt. Komagatake and Cape Esan from the observatory.
“Earth Cape,” is one of Hokkaido’s most breathtaking natural viewpoints—where the land seems to meet the curvature of the Earth itself. Located in Muroran, it dramatically juts out from the southern tip of the Etomo Peninsula, with 100-meter-high cliffs plunging into the Pacific Ocean. The name “Chikyu” comes from the Ainu word chikep, meaning “cliff,” but in Japanese it poetically translates to “Earth,” giving rise to its celestial nickname. Perched 130 meters above sea level, this white octagonal lighthouse has been guiding ships since 1920. It’s one of Japan’s “50 Great Lighthouses” and part of the country’s civil engineering heritage. 9/13/25 Open for public on Marine Days.

Great viewpoint for the ocean and lighthouse. We visited in mid-October and the lighthouse was closed for renovations. You can climb the open air observation deck and ring a bell, but beware as people line up to constantly ring it loudly and ruin the peaceful view.

Cape Chikyu is definitely worth visiting — the scenery is absolutely stunning, especially on a clear day when you can see far out over the Pacific Ocean. The lighthouse area is clean and well maintained, and the ocean breeze makes it a peaceful place to just pause and take in the view. There were only a few people when I visited, so it felt calm and relaxed. Parking and access were easy, and there was no waiting time at all. The only small downside is that the weather can change quickly, so visibility isn’t always perfect — but when the sky is clear, it’s magical.

Cape Chikyu offers one of the most breathtaking panoramic views in the region, making it a must-visit for anyone in search of natural beauty. The winds can be strong, but they only enhance the sense of openness and awe as you take in the stunning vistas of the coastline and ocean. On a clear, sunny day, the view is absolutely spectacular, with the sparkling sea stretching out to the horizon. Best of all, Cape Chikyu is easily accessible, with free parking and no entrance fee, making it a great spot to visit without any hassle. Whether you’re there to enjoy the view, take photos, or simply feel the wind on your face, this cape provides a refreshing and tranquil escape. For the best experience, be sure to visit on a sunny day when the skies are clear, allowing the beauty of the surroundings to truly shine.
