Ruta de los Calderones is an incredible hike near the small town of Chulilla, taking around 3.5 hours and covering more than 17 km. It’s definitely not a beginner’s trail. While most of the route is easy to moderate, there are sections with steep descents and many rocks, making some parts a bit tricky and potentially dangerous. I highly recommend wearing proper hiking shoes with sturdy soles — regular sneakers don’t offer enough confidence on the rough terrain. Also, make sure to bring plenty of water. We had one 1.5-liter bottle for two people, and while we managed, we had to start rationing towards the end. The views are absolutely breathtaking. The mountains have a texture and reddish hue that reminded me of U.S. national parks. You’ll cross beautiful water bodies and different kinds of bridges, including hanging ones. The hike takes you up and down, offering stunning perspectives of the park from different levels. There are also peaceful forest sections with the amazing scent of trees and absolute silence — just listening to the quiet and breathing in the forest air is a delight in itself. I highly recommend doing this hike in the fall or early spring when the weather in Spain is comfortable. Attempting it in the middle of summer heat could be extremely tough. Make sure to pack enough water, wear proper footwear, bring a power bank, and keep your phone charged for photos and emergencies. For older hikers or those who may struggle with balance, a walking stick could make a huge difference in safety and comfort. Overall, it’s an excellent hike and I highly recommend it!
Just a 50-minute drive from Valencia, the Ruta de los calderones is an unexpectedly breathtaking hike that feels like a miniature version of the Grand Canyon. The trail winds through a striking landscape of rugged cliffs, narrow gorges, and dramatic rock formations that make you feel like you've been transported to another continent. The entire route is fascinating, offering scenic views at every turn and plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the natural beauty. It’s not an overly difficult hike, making it accessible for most fitness levels, and the peaceful surroundings add to the overall charm. If you’re staying in Valencia and looking for a half-day escape into nature, this route is absolutely worth it. Bring good shoes, water, and a camera, you won’t want to miss capturing this stunning piece of Spain.
I walked this trail with my Mum (75 years old) and we were dropped off at the parking area marked as Ruta de los Calderones on Google. We walked to the suspension bridges and then back to Chulilla village. The path is signposted and although it fades in and out there are never times when you aren't sure where to go. We went on a Sunday and the path was quite busy with a real mix of people, lovely to see. Entry was €1 and we spent about an hour on the walk so that was very good value. There are a lot of steps involved if you want to go down to the bridges and the base of the gorge but that is expected. A fabulous trip.
Awesome hike, and not very bust in October. We went as a family, with our 3 year old and 2 small dogs. All were fine with the steps, bridges and paths. It's not easy, but it is more than doable, so don't let some of the other reviews put you off. We started at the end with the bridges and I must say that the end with the lake (before we turned around) was a little underwhelming. If I were to do it again, I'd just turn around at the end of the gorge and head back. I don't think it was worth climbing that last road hill.
Really fantastic! If you go the circular path you really have to look up to see the cave paintings. At that point of the route you have to turn left! Otherwise you walk down a really dangerous river bed. We did not feel welcome in the town tho.
Wonderful scenery and phenomenal views. The trail is well marked and well maintained. There are spots where you dip in the water in the summer. Make sure you take enough water especially if you're planning on taking the longer route. If you're planning to have lunch in Chilulla, make sure you make a reservation ahead of time on busy days.
Perfect place for a hike. Be ready for some off road walking and a ton of stairs. It is worth the effort for the views at the bottom. Take some food and drinks in your backpack because there is nothing around. There are some parking areas near by and from there is only walking. The trails are narrow so hard to bike on. The full hike can be long but you can just visit the bridges and walk around that area, it might take an hour or so.
This place should be included in the MUST visit places near Valencia. But to go there you also should have a car or a moto. Nature is amazing and magnificent. By the way don't miss the oportunity to jump in the river, you will find a few places in the riverside :)

Gorgeous views, free and dogfriendly :) Easy walk up
Just jaw dropping. It’s a walk uphill but well marked and straightforward path. Dogs allowed. Free. It’s wonderful
Incredible castle with the mist amazing views!! Cool place to sit and overlook the town! Found cool tiny shells in a path above the castle!
You can visit the castle remains for free. Up there you have a great view of the valleys below and the town of Chulilla. Its an easy 5min. walk from the town square up the hill. You'll pass the small town streets and friendly people who live up the hill. Up there are several information boards about the history of the castle and its architecture. Worth the walk!
Old small gentle toen with a nice old fortress
This landscape is just beauriful, and the small town is gorgeous with its little streets and extraordinary feeling.
If you're in Chulilla then you must visit the castle. Beautiful scenery in all directions.
