A tryst with pre-historic era!. We had visited it during the month of April and took the 1 hour tour (along with the museum - to be paid separately) into the pit. The guide was very friendly, expert in geology and was able to make the tour very interesting. This UNESCO natural heritage site is a must visit, if you’re around the area. Very well decorated and maintained facilities.
An absolute must see museum. Interactive, with a good gift store, modern museums, and you can book a two hour tour through the actual scientific pit where 47 "ur-horses" have already been dug up. Museum is wheelchair accessible, there is a lovely cafeteria with food prices and delicious food. All in all, highly recommended. Scientists and the public prevented the globally most important Unesco World Heritage site for fossils from becoming a garbage dump. Kudos to those brave folks back in he d ay.
I enjoyed returning to the pit after some 48 years. Back then I was part of an excavation team for 4 weeks. To my pleasant surprise I recognized myself on one of the photos in the book "Messel - Treasures of the Eocene" (page 16). Happy to see that the landfill did not happen. Also liked the museum.
Great little museum with some ICONIC eocene fossils, and loads of interactive elements! Certainly worth paying a visit.
Book a guided tour beforehand. Only very few guided tours in English which is bad. They dont seem to want to have too many tourists as there is little awareness about the site as well as it is not made for non-German tourists. But interesting story and site. Do go visit the museum i. The nearby Messel city, it is more interesting and we got an explanation in English there.
The Grube Messel Tour is the definition of "This tour could have been an email". The tour mainly consists of the guide telling you things while pointing at pictures that are printed out. Then going through dirt, which are the leftovers of the research teams (so it's basically going through dirt) to maybe find a "fossil" aka a part of a leaf in size of 1mm. Finally you look at "proper" fossils that are prepared already, which you also could have done in the museum or online. The tour is NOT worth it. Not even for kids.
One of the best places I've visited in my life. If you're interested in mammal evolution this is a must see. Definitely book a tour before visiting. The fossils were so good. They were buried in an anoxic layer at the bottom of a lake so not just bones have been preserved. Some insects they dig up you can still see the refractive colours. It's eocene so it's when mammals were really getting established after the dinosaurs. Tells us so much about our evolution. It's so rich. They're only digging an area 2m x 4m but they're finding 2 - 3 thousand fossils per year.
The visitors' centre is vast and needs quite sometime to see & understand. It begins with a small movie about the history of the site. There are a few view points that lend a great view of the open-mine and then ofcourse there's a proper walk down into the mine.

Very interesting small museum! We found it more interesting than the visitorcenter at the Grube. Very friendly lady at the museum who spoke good English and who had been digging at the site before it became Unesco site. Really worth a visit. We found a small free parkingplace close the museum.
The museum is Small but very well organized, nice and interesting. The audioguide from the website is available in both german and english. The man that manages the museum is very kind, and very passionate and well prepared on the topic. Definitively worth a visit.
Downstairs is the local museum, upstairs are the fossils from the nearby Grube Messel. A good collection (better than what the museum at the pit has). Most are casts, the originals are elsewhere, but several are the real thing. Nice little museum.
Wonderful place full of excellent examples of fossils discovered in the Messel Pit. Was given a lovely little tour with everything explained to me in English, thank you very much 😊
Lovely little museum.
(Translated by Google) There is much more to see there than in the modern museum directly at the site of the discovery. Lovingly made and run by dedicated volunteers.
