First, go to the visitors center to buy your ticket. On Sundays the church may be closed for worship for 1 hour, but during this time you can visit the other buildings of Colònia Güell. The Crypt of Colònia Güell was designed by Antoni Gaudí as part of a larger, unfinished church for the workers of Colònia Güell, a textile colony established in the late 19th century by industrialist Eusebi Güell. Construction took place between 1908 and 1915, but only the lower section—the crypt—was completed after work halted due to financial constraints following Güell’s death. The crypt is notable for its innovative architectural solutions, serving as a testing ground for the structural solutions Gaudí later used in the Sagrada Família. The structure incorporates catenary arches, hyperbolic paraboloids, and twisted columns, achieving a balance between organic form and structural efficiency. Gaudí also experimented with diverse materials, including basalt, brick, stone, and mosaics, blending them harmoniously with the surrounding natural landscape. The interior features tilted columns that distribute weight efficiently, allowing for large open spaces. The stained glass windows, in irregular shapes, diffuse light dynamically. The integration of architecture and nature—seen in elements like the irregularly shaped floor plan and the use of earthy materials—exemplifies Gaudí’s organic approach to design.
The crypt itself is a fascinating piece of architecture and a glimpse into Gaudí's unfinished work. It’s nice to see his unique style in a quieter setting compared to more famous landmarks in Barcelona. However, the experience feels underwhelming for the price. The €10 ticket for what essentially amounts to a 10-minute visit is excessive. There’s not much to explore beyond the crypt itself, and the value just isn’t there. It might appeal to hardcore Gaudí fans, but for casual visitors, it’s difficult to justify the cost. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a quick look, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for it.
Hidden gem of Gaudi’s — well worth the trip out to experience it in person (without the crowds of Sagrada F!) Came on a Monday morning and it was easy to snag a ticket at the Information Centre. High recommend getting an audio guide with your ticket and learn about the Crypt’s architectural history as well as the surrounding area about Güell’s industrial colony. The staff at the Information Centre are warm and helpful, full of smiles. Tip: Come before heading to the Barcelona Airport since they’re close to each other. I spent a solid hour enjoying the tranquility of the Crypt then headed straight to the airport to catch my flight back.
As avid fans of Gaudi and his architectural brilliance we loved our visit to the Crypt and Church at Colonial Guell. The makings of the forms that would mature into the Sagrada Familia are evident, and there is a familiarity, and yet an immaturity to some of the structures within the church. However, our overall impressions of Colonial Guell were not so positive. We suggest going with a guide and learning about the socio political context of the development of the “colony” and the advantages and disadvantages it represents. Unfortunately we opted for the audio guide and found that there was no grounding for us to base our learnings on. The audio guide was factual but not informative. In fact, it felt more like a hindrance. The area is not well signposted and the benefits of the architecture would have been advanced by tours of some of the buildings. Great to see where Gaudi may have developed his social leanings, including education for workers’ children, but overall a disappointing experience.
The Colònia Güell isn’t just another Gaudí site; it’s a whole story about how art, architecture, and social progress intertwined. It was created by Eusebi Güell, one of Gaudí’s greatest patrons, as a model industrial village where workers could live near the textile factory — but with dignity, culture, and comfort. Gaudí’s Cripta de la Colònia Güell, with its organic shapes and daring structural innovations, feels almost like a rehearsal for the Sagrada Família. Walking through the village today, you can still feel that mix of innovation and care for the people who lived there — a rare kind of “industrial utopia.”
If you have time in Barcelona, this should definitely be on your list. It’s perfect if you’re driving back from Montserrat to the city. Off the beaten path and absolutely worth the visit. Colònia Güell, is not only famous for the crypt, but it is also a beautiful, well-preserved village perfect for lunch, dinner, or just a coffee!
We saw most of the work of Gaudi in Barcelona, so when I found that he had a crypt design very close to the city we visited it on our last day , as it's near the airport. Well worth it. There is a free car park just up the road, and you need to go to the Tourist office to get tickets, which is past the entrance and to the right. The church (crypt) itself is so familiar Gaudi it was a stunning display of architecture. The inside was a feast of Gaudi's design skills and the classic motifs he put in to the Sagrada had some influence here too. It was a quiet day when we visited so it was a very good experience.
Worth the journey to see this unique small modernist shifting town and Gaudi’s less known but equally stunning masterpiece on a much smaller more intimate scale…please…just don’t tell anyone about it! sssh!

A must see for urbex lovers ! You can easily get there by public transport, as it is right next to the "Colònia Güell" stop. When I went there (Feb 2022) I could easily access it from the left side, where a piece of wall is broken and allows easy access. There is no sign saying you can't go in, no cameras, but you can tell from the barricades that you're not supposed to go in. The inside is magnificent: be careful though, there are some places that could collapse, and some holes where you could slip. A lot of graffiti which for me is part of the urbex decor. Nobody around when I went there. A nice discovery for ruin lovers.
Visited the Torre Salvana in December 2014 and was captivated by its charm. This historical site, nestled in Santa Coloma de Cervelló on the outskirts of Barcelona, Spain, is home to the ruins of a medieval castle with origins tracing back to the 10th century. Despite being partially destroyed during the Catalan Civil War in 1224, the castle stands as a testament to time, having been abandoned for centuries. Today, it beckons explorers and photographers alike, offering breathtaking views of the former factory village of Colonia Güell. A truly enchanting place, Torre Salvana left an indelible impression on me.
Lovely place, very sad that there are so many graffitis. It should be rehabilitated because it has very high potential and would be incredible for guided visits.
DO NOT PARK IN DIRT PARKING LOT. Junkies live in the castle and will break into your car windows and steal everything. Happened to 2 cars when I was there. Other than that, castle is beautiful. Also don't forget to check out the church across the road, designed by Gaudi.
Tower was cool but rest of the castle is very demolished.
Really easy to get to and get around Lots of graffiti and historic aspects of the site
One of the nice lost places where you can take great photos. It’s an old ruin, so, better not wearing high heels or espandrilles.
Scary at night! Would return by the day one day.
