This place is Aaaaaaaawesome!! I always take my family gambling here when they come to visit and they always win big money. I have won loads of money here and I’ve only spent like ¥500 at most over the 18 years I have been here. My wife’s dad is totally addicted to this place and spends all his cash gambling here and on booze. He can tell you exactly what horses to bet on. He lied to my wife though and she lost all her money on some silly bet a few years ago and she always reminds him about that as she was about to bet on the winners but changed her choice because of him and lost! So just bet on whoever you want. It is so much fun watching the horses run as you can run along side them. I always can get to the end before they do so I can see them at the start AND at the finish line - I mean there ain’t no where else in the world you can do that at a horse race. Actually if you see me on the line up, you should bet on me as I seem to be faster than all the horses. There are good places to eat that are really cheap and you can get your kids to give carrots to some old horses that are about to go to the horse sashimi place across the road.
Very fun experience seeing big Banba Horses (850 - 1200 kg) racing while pulling 550-600 kg metal sled through obstacle hills! The one and only Ban’ei Horse Race in the world! Lot’s of parking space, rest area, foods.
Racing Hourse only at Obihiro - Hokkaido So Special Racing
**American Family Visiting** This was an interesting visit. While it's a little bit of a trip to get from Sapporo to Obihiro Racecourse, it's likely worth the visit if you want to experience a type of weighted sled racing that can't be found anywhere else. The grounds consist of main building where gambling and seating is found along with a couple of small shops and restaurants both in and on the grounds. You can either take a taxi to get here (which we did to get there) from the station, or if it's a nice day, the walk is not too bad (but still a walk!). There is also a small petting area where small farm animals and even the huge horses are out and you can feed them (these horses are HUGE though). The racing itself was interesting and while I understand this is traditional and that the animals aren't abused, it's tough to watch when whips are used, so if that bothers you, you may not want to go. The horses appear well cared for, the staff was friendly, and it was a lively crowd. You really have to get down at the race course level and walk/run along with them as the race goes.
I recommend Obihiro Racecourse. It is in Obihiro City, Hokkaido. You can walk there in 20 to 30 minutes. Obihiro Racecourse has many "Banba" horses. These horses were farm horses long ago. They can pull a one-ton sled with a jockey on it. You can enjoy it with your family. The racecourse has: A petting zoo Playgrounds for children Shops (like pork bowl restaurants, coffee shops, and cafeterias) I ate curry ramen at the cafeteria. It was very delicious. I also ate soft serve ice cream at the coffee shop. It is called "Bouquet Soft" and is made with organic milk. It was very tasty too!
Fun and interesting experience, everything was really well organised. The races are only on Saturday and Sundays starting at the afternoon, every 30 minutes there is a new race. We liked looking at the preparation for the race as well as the race itself which is very short. My husband even guessed the winning horse, unfortunately for non Japanese speakers it’s impossible to understand the gambling machines so we couldn’t do that.
I really interesting way of horse racing using Clydesdale horses pulling approximately 1 tonne of concrete blocks behind them over 5 Mounds of Earth. The track is not very long maybe 500 m but the excitement is very addictive
Honestly, exactly what I was expecting. My daughter and I read Silver Spoon and decided to check this place out years ago. It has what you would expect of horse racing, tradition over some more modern practices perhaps. I don't think any animals are straight up abused though and the racing was amazing to see up close. Took about 2 hours of our day, but is a real hike from Sapporo!

On 31 Aug 2024, my wife brought me here. We were surprised with the big free car park. We took lots of photos here, spending an hour very happily.
This a nice place with spacious surrounding farmlands. It is a good sightseeing spot with a cafe and souvenir store. Best for couples and families. Also a historical spot. Was featured on a NHK travel TV show making it famous. More info at hokkaidoguide.com
Cute little area to chill and have a walk 😎
The commemorative sticker on the station building looked like a fulu and was a little surprising. The sunset over the Hidaka Mountains is beautiful.
(Translated by Google) You can also get there by bus from Happiness Station and Obihiro Station! I arrived just as the sun was setting and explored the area, but since the surrounding shops were closing, I was able to enjoy the scenery quietly. It was nice to wander around and read the stories of the people in the various locations. 😌 They also sell souvenirs in the small shop, so if you're interested, you can pick some up. Incredible relaxing and peaceful park. Ornately curated with care taken in the placement of every single plant / tree. Love the variety of all the plants here. ¥1000 to enter per person but it's worth it if it's to pay the staff and their excellent work Cute little cafe and handicraft shop just attached to it
There are zones of different style of gardens along the path, not particularly stunning by themselves, the scenery is decent. I find the last zone "monster garden" the most interesting. Saw many squirrels on the trees at the entrance area. There were a lot of mosquitos inside when I went there (in late Aug). Some people bring there dogs inside for a walk, so I think it's dog-friendly.
Visited on a rainy day when even the squirrels were taking shelter, so there wasn’t a great deal of wildlife to see, but the garden is peaceful and well looked after. It’ll depend on the time of year as to what you see, but it’s a nice way to spend an hour or two walking around and experiencing Japanese nature. The garden has a long history and a big shop and a small cafe are attached.
There are varieties of garden style here. Entrance fee is 1000 yen but I think it's well worth it. We went when most flowers were yet to bloom. It's still very beautiful and peaceful. I imagine it would be really gorgeous when the flowers are in full bloom. Even at the time we go, we still took many amazing photos.
Been to another garden few years ago in Obihiro, Manabe gardens is good as the other worth a visit. Purchase a Manabe Garden Pack (or other garden pack) from the Tokachi Bus Terminal counters includes return bus tickets with timetable + admission fares + cafe discount coupon.
A beautiful garden with a variety of different areas. The cafe serves tasty & fresh food. My vegan friend said the salad was great. Highly recommend a visit.
What a wonderful garden. Large collection of trees and other plants. Both Japanese style and Western style areas that reminded me of Germany. To add a lovely touch to a great experience, we got a package of seeds with every ticket we bought. So sweet. This is because the garden belongs to a plant nursery. There is also a nice little cafe to rest and enjoy a coffee. Thank you for the nice time!

a very big garden, some flowers are blooming but i can't see any tulips. I think you have to come in a certain month to see the tulips that Shichiku's grandmother dreamed of. there are quite a lot of wild flowers too, so for a 1000 yen ticket I think it's too expensive. A male staff helped to take our photos, he was so excited that I expected more for his photos. I appreciate the effort and very passionate voice, but the photos he took are really bad 🥲💔 When you come here, you must try to eat rose soft cream and sponge cake. very delicious! You also can buy any souvenir and flower seeds here 🌸
A gem in the countryside. Wonderful human interest story about the founder. Priceless encounter with the 90 year old founder who made our visit super memorable.
Admission fee: 1000 yen. Not worth the drive and the admission fee. Just a big garden with lawn and planting of some flowers not well organized. Place not well maintained.
Lovely visit, we met the founder too. Such a nice lady。
A beautiful garden and tasty rose ice cream~

In a narrow alley in downtown Obihiro, there are local food stalls on both sides. Every place looks cozy, with friendly owners and staff welcoming customers warmly. Guests seem to truly enjoy the moment, chatting with friends or the shop owners. The snacks and beer taste even better in this lively atmosphere. On an October autumn night, the air in Obihiro has already turned a bit chilly. However, at Kita no Yatai, the chill only enhances the warmth of the place.
Very good experience and manage to chat with locals although we are foreign tourist. This is our first night in Obihiro. We had a great time there! We managed to buy some drinks to other customers and got treated with free snacks and sake too. Geat local Tokachi sake and Hokkaido beer. Forgot to take a picture of the restaurant we had visit but it's managed by a couple.
In the afternoon of 31 Aug 2024, my wife and I bumped into here. While none of stores were open, we checked out each and everyone of them from the outside. We believed our experience would be different if we had came at the right time.
It is a stretch of Izakaya which allows people to eat, drink, and smoke. We randomly picked one and the food was really great. The two chefs tried their best to teach us how to eat the food as we were given different sauces. I love their tamago and lotus stuffed with meat. The seafood sashimi tasted fresh but not the best I had eaten. No English menu, but it can be google translated using your phone. Worth the experience, and definitely more if there is a non smoking one. Be prepared to spend about 6000Yen for a pax of two, with a drink each (Payment in cash).
This street has a great selection of amazing foods from all around Hokkaido. You can easily find yourself walking around this area of Obihiro eating and drinking delicious food for hours. Don't over fill yourself in just one resturant. Save room for more ;)
Small cubicle stall which seat about 10. We were lucky to b in 1 as mostly reserved. Even luckier as Chef can speak simple English. We had bear n horse sashimi here!
Great place to grab dinner and enjoy local cuisine created in front of you. Don't be afraid, be humble and kind, and you will enjoy the hospitality of the Japanese people.

This is basically an all in one place, you can place a bet on the horses race. There are a few cafes, eateries, as well as a farmer’s market. Slide 1 of 8
For this ticket price, you can see a fair amount of animals. I recommend visiting early as some of the exhibitions closed early to keep the animals healthy, probably due to cold weather.
I regret visiting this zoo as I ended up actually sharing the sadness and depression that a lot of the animals there are enduring whilst being trapped in old, tiny and dirty enclosures. They say going to prison and being confined to a cell changes a man physically and psychologically, the same can be said with the animals here. Being locked up in small (by global standard) enclosures with very little space to move around and the lack of stimulation will naturally affect them mentally. It was heartbreaking to see the polar bear, tiger and the lion (to name only a few) look so downtrodden and depressed. Whilst I understand that the zoo is relatively old and is rundown in many areas with quite a few empty exhibits and enclosures, it seems there has recently been some work towards renovating and rejuvenating the place, however the money looks like it's being spent in the wrong areas. Why splash all the cash on flashy new toilet facilities or an information centre when it should be invested in upgrading and improving the living facilities of the animals there? Whilst it's 75% zoo and 25% amusement park, it's probably best to scrap the amusement park aspect, reduce the number of species on display and improve the facilities for the main attractions - quality over quantity, if you will. If the animals are happy, lively and running around, the public will come see them and make repeat visits but those that come at the moment will leave with a feeling of sadness for the animals as the facilities are so poor and the animals don't look well. This is 2024, so the ethical treatment of animals should not be dictated by the facilities and doctrine set in place from last century. Being a city owned zoo, I get that tax payer dollars fund it, but at the same time, if you can't afford to maintain and operate it properly, then perhaps it's better to just shut it down completely? Why allow the poor wildlife to suffer unnecessarily? 👎
The animal enclosures were a bit sad but it was a nice place to walk with your family. The rides were fun and many animals were fascinating. For the ticket price it is a steal.
The place is not too big, you can walk around without getting tired. There are many animals to see and it is not far from the city.
Nice place to bring the kids. You can have a nice walk/ picnic in the park nearby after the zoo trip. There is a big playing space/ playground in that park.
It was the worst zoo have ever been to. Half of the cages were empty actually. There was a cemetery right beside the zoo, I hope they got buried there. The zoo was so unhygienic that you could smell various types of animal poos. Moreover, the animals there all had depression and mental disorders. They kept doing same weird things over and over again and it was so painful to watch them suffer in the cage. I do recommend this zoo for those of you who want to cry out loud, believe me it will be effective than a sad movie.
It is extremely sad to see the animals in the tiny cages. If we had known, we would not have supported the zoo. This is nothing like Dubbo zoo...

Lovely place to go whenever you are in Obihiro during the winter months.
Lovely relaxing park. Our family visited this park last winter, and we enjoyed our morning walk very much. This time, it was even more enjoyable with splendid autumn leaves, and a couple of playful squirrels.
We were there during unusual heat wave and saw the water play area. Our kids really enjoyed running and splashing , it was very refreshing for such a hot day. Pay attention before you go though because certain days of each month it’s closed for cleaning .

This shrine has a long history dating back to 1881, from the first pioneers that came to the area. It is a large shrine with long paths, a small wood area, pond, and statues. While in Obihiro, it is a good sightseeing spot! Lots of small wildlife in the area as well. More info at Hokkaidoguide.com
We discovered that this shrine has shimaenaga as a mascot and that it was a good place to see squirrels, so we had to make a visit. It's a beautiful shrine, with chigi and katsuogi on the roof architecture. It has shimaenaga ema, omikuji, goshuin, among other items. We could also enjoy watching a couple of red squirrels foraging and jumping from branch to branch. It was hard to see it, but there was also a pair of shimaenaga on the trees.
Visiting Obihiro Shrine was a peaceful and memorable experience during our trip to Hokkaido. The shrine is beautifully maintained and offers a quiet retreat from the city, making it easy to take a moment for reflection. We especially enjoyed the flower-adorned purification basins, which added a unique and charming touch to the visit. Another highlight was the Shimaenaga-themed fortune slips, which are both cute and memorable. Walking around the grounds, we could feel the care put into preserving the shrine’s serene atmosphere. It’s a lovely place to experience local culture, enjoy some calm, and take in the traditional beauty of Obihiro.
I went here several months ago and it’s so lucky that I saw a really cute エゾリス(Hokkaido Squirrel) trying to pick up those foods on the ground. Also the “おみくじ” here is very special. You should collect them all! They also have a place for people whom are tired to take a rest. So sweet.
Obihiro shrine is one of the larger shrines in the city. It's a quiet and calming environment, with little to no visitors. The grounds are well kept by the staff, and they sell amulets and gifts at the office during opening hours. I came here for prayers and got a goshuin; their bird goshuin is very cute! You also get a sticker for purchase from the shop.
Nice serene place where you can visit.
Parking across the street, nice small quaint shrine. Nicely maintained.
Came here to pray during my road trip for good health and relationship. Also, try to spot shimaenaga. Sadly, did not spot any but saw other wild lifes such as squirrels. 👍

(Translated by Google) There are many flyers and pamphlets, but they don't seem to provide information that you can only find by going there. I strongly feel that it's about time to reconsider the mission and purpose of this old-fashioned tourist information center. First of all, the staff's expertise in tourism and Tokachi is not guaranteed, and there seem to be many middle-aged women at the counter. I wonder if they have any pride in meeting the needs of tourists or have organizational guidelines in place? I was disappointed by their attitude of not knowing anything when I asked questions at the counter and telling me to look it up myself. A fully detailed museum of not only the horse racing in Obihiro, but the importance of their draft horses to the local community and the country in the past. Google translate is a definite need as the museum is almost entirely in Japanese, but there are plenty of pictures and items to see.
Small but interesting, free entrance

(Translated by Google) (Written on July 14, 2025) It's in the center of Obihiro, so it feels far to get there from the direction of Nishi Obihiro. The parking lot is large and easy to park in. Fortunately, I've never encountered a rude city hall employee, but the service is average, for better or worse. The waiting time depends on the day, but if you go early in the morning, you can avoid the crowds. It also seems dim, perhaps to save electricity. The waiting chairs are fine as they are, but it might be better if at least the writing desk and counter were a little brighter. It's a great place to take a break from sightseeing in the frigid cold, and there are toilets available, which is very convenient. Tickets to enter the racecourse are also available here. We decided to drive to Obihiro since there was nothing to do at Tomamu the Tower (see separate review) and thought a visit to the Art Museum would calm our souls after the disappointment at Tomamu. We were pleasantly surprised that we stumbled on the first day of the Sanrio Designers Exhibition. Lots of fun taking photos with Hello Kitty, Melody, Kuromi, etc and looking at drawings of various Sanrio characters. The exhibition runs until 15 Sep 2025 - check it out if you are in the area.
For a small regional museum, they come up with some nice exhibits!
Cute little museum, I enjoyed it, the architecture is really nice, the art selection onteresting, is small, exactly in green park, so after a walk at the nature you csn have a nice visit and enjoy art too. Lovely place.
(Translated by Google) Although it is not a large museum, it is a beautiful building and has some very good exhibits. In July 2025, I went to the Vehicle Encyclopedia Exhibition. (Translated by Google) ☆A normal-feeling art museum☆ Key points: Surprisingly spacious and reasonably priced. Since it's an art museum, I refrained from taking photos. Photography is allowed, so it's fine for personal enjoyment! This time, the collection gallery mainly featured "fantasy" art. The main exhibition room featured "The Age of Photography"! Among the exhibits, the photos of people from overseas (depicting conflicts and poverty) were particularly memorable. There were also quizzes about the exhibits, which was a lot of fun!♪ By the way, the exhibition runs until November 24th (closed on Mondays). (Translated by Google) This was my first time visiting. I chose this place because it has both a garden and animals. The walking route was written on a guide sheet, so it was easy to get around, and the paths were covered with wood chips, which was a nice touch! I had so much fun and was able to feed the huchen, yamame trout, and lots of cute rabbits!!! It wasn't flower season, but I enjoyed walking through nature, finding puff-puff mushrooms, and seeing all kinds of plants! There are no restaurants nearby, so I didn't have high expectations when I ate at this restaurant, but it was unexpectedly delicious!! I was surprised! It seems you can adopt rabbits, so if you're able to care for them, I recommend it! The pond, waterfall, and stream were beautiful, and at this time of year, the insect swarms around the water were incredible. Feeding the rabbits: When I spun the ¥100 gacha, they became restless.
