As soon as we entered the church we heard the typical smell of old buildings - but that is by no means a negative thing. On the contrary, Ardagger Abbey is still very original, which you can see and smell. But despite the several hundred years the building has existed, it is incredibly impressive. The chancel, the ceilings and also the side altar are so pompous and magnificent that we hardly know from the Catholic churches in this country. The famous Margaret Window in the background further reinforced this impression. The cloister was not, as we know it, located within the church area on the walls, but in a separate corridor that led around a small courtyard. The crypt with its groin vault, which dates back to the 13th century, was also extremely impressive. All in all, Ardagger Abbey is definitely worth a visit - but that's not all: many little things (e.g. notices and children's projects) testify that the church is still alive in these walls today. We were only here for a visit and were still very impressed. Der Altarraum, die Decken und auch der Nebenaltar sind derart pompös und prunkvoll, wie wir es kaum von den katholischen Kirchen hierzulande kennen. Das berühmte Margarethenfenster im Hintergrund verstärkte diesen Eindruck noch. Der Kreuzgang befand sich nicht, so wie wir es kennen, innerhalb des Kirchenbereiches an den Wänden, sondern in einem separaten Gang, der rings um einen kleinen Innenhof führte. Auch die aus dem 13. Jahrhundert stammende Krypta mit dem Kreuzgratgewölbe war überaus beeindruckend. Alles in allem ist das Stift Ardagger unbedingt einen Besuch wert - doch nicht nur das: viele Kleinigkeiten (bspw. Aushänge und Projekte von Kindern) zeugten davon, dass auch heute noch Kirche in diesen Gemäuern gelebt wird. Wir waren nur zu Besuch hier und dennoch sehr beeindruckt.
