We found this chateau to be a little gem, which we stumbled across when trying to catch a stage of the Tour de France nearby. Unlike the grander, more well known chateaux of the Loire, it is uncrowded and has a distinctly welcoming feel. You get the impression the owners really enjoy sharing the home they have refurbished and brought into public view. We took a self guided tour around the rooms, which house many items of the family's contemporary art collection, alongside items you might expect to find in a typical chateau. The gardens are lovely, relaxing and well cared for & we spent quite some time relaxing in hammocks in the cool of the trees. We recommend the café overlooking the Chateau & its tasty menu - we hope to go back to visit the restaurant too! All in all an unexpected but highly recommended addition to the typical chateaux tour of the region.
We only visited the chateau. It was really lovely. We appreciated the different spin with the modern art pieces all over and the activities for the kids adapted to different ages which we also enjoyed. Nice piknik and play area for the kiddos. You can easily spend a half day here. The inside of the chateau was small but also really original and beautifully decorated. Highly recommend if you’re in the area especially with kids.
Visiting Château du Rivau is like stepping into a fairytale. The mix of medieval towers, art installations, and enchanting gardens creates pure magic. Every corner tells a story, from the rose garden to the whimsical sculptures. The atmosphere is creative, peaceful, and full of charm. A delightful and inspiring visit for all ages.
A lovely Chateau visit with some interesting gardens based on fairy tales themes with some beautiful plantings. The Chateau rooms have some interesting art work and quirky. We enjoyed salad lunches in the outside summer restaurant which were reasonably priced, very well presented and tasty. Well worth a visit
We thought the tour was worth it but it's not. It's just about the rooms and the restaurant but nothing else. We were a party of four and none of us is happy. Make sure if you think about going for a tour in the castle for 13.50 it may be dissapointing.
Stayed here for two nights and spent a full day painting in the gardens. The entire experience was wonderful. We will definitely return, although next time we'll probably skip the dinner at the Secret Garden (it was okay, not great).
We came to visit because of the dress up hire and it was such a paradise for the kids. The gardens are incredible and the coffee was delicious. I would recommend to families.
Chateau du Rivau is a real gem and we thoroughly enjoyed our half day visit. We found the gardens super peaceful and full of hidden spots to find solitude (even with our energetic 3yo). The chateau isnt open to view but does provide an amazing backdrop for the gardens. There's lots of chateau in the region and the insides are mostly the same - Rivau stands out because the gardens are lovingly maintained without been too contrived. We enjoyed a delicious lunch at the courtyard restaurant. A perfect visit for families with very young children as the gardens have lots of imagination and intrigue. Be warned, the cobbles in the main courtyard make pushing a stroller impossible. Highly recommended and would return.
