Easy, 1.4-mi path on a wooded fire road leading to a rocky coastline with tide pools & island views.

Considered an easy trail. I took my grandkids with me and the had fun exploring the paths. Some leading into woods and some leading to the ocean. Beautiful views. Can be rocky and narrow at times on the path and roots along the path periodically. Definitely doable just need to be mindful of where you are walking.
I laugh when I think how simple this trail was. Been there, done that, type of thing and boring. But then, out of nowhere, the trail opened up into a spectacular area of tidepools filled with snails, seagulls, complete mussel shells, and cool rock formations. Explored with family and friends and exploring was fun, but not the best trail compared to others.
Very easy walk down to the water and a loop around the little peninsula. Great nature. Awesome rocks and water views. Park on the road if you must. No restrooms.
Super easy out-and-back trail that leads straight to the water! Quick, peaceful, and beautiful!
Not a very long trail, but the scenery at the end is amazing. Can get pretty muddy with some large puddles after a rain storm, but it is worth it. There is a very gradual hill, but overall, it is a very easy trail to walk. No bathrooms and not really any "side trails" so plan accordingly.
It was neat but a little out of of the way. All flat. Easy to get to the ocean.
Nice short-flat walk to the water, very kids friendly, bring bug spray! Once you reach the water you can walk by the rocks (which is fun) or the path.
Nice trail, but narrow, and therefore I wouldn't recommend for reactive dogs (despite what I read online to the contrary)

We visited on a Sunday afternoon in late June 2025. There was only 10 parking spots in the parking lot and we ended up parking on the street (Fernald Point Rd). We were not the only ones parked on the street. The trail head is right off the parking lot. It's a 1.4 mile loop with just a little bit of elevation. But because of the steps and rockiness I'd classify it as a moderate. It's fairly low effort trail for great views. It's also on the less busy side of the island and National Park. It was probably the busiest of all the trails we had done that day. The trail does loop back around by the beach area which was cool and the kids had a lot of fun exploring there for a bit. Overall great hike and good for many ages and abilities. We would gladly do this one again. I did not see any bathrooms at the trailhead or on the trail in general so keep that in mind before visiting.
Flying Mountain Trail is a short and easy hike that’s perfect if you’re looking for something quick but rewarding. The trail is only about 0.3 miles one way, well-maintained, and not too challenging—great for beginners or anyone who wants a light outdoor activity. At the top, you’re treated to a lovely view of Norwood Cove, which makes the short climb totally worth it. Definitely a nice little hike to add to your Acadia trip!
Even in the rain this hike is one of my favorites. The hike offers a steep but quick incline with great views and a nice loop back with views of the nearby lake. I would recommend the incline first to flying moutain then circling back to valley cove trail to the parking lot. Valley cove trail was also filled with Christmas trees on each side almost the whole entire way, it was beautiful!
1.5 mile loop trail through the forest leading with short but steep climb to the top of Flying Mountain with views of nearby Valley Peak, Somes Sound, Norumbega Mountain and Northeast Harbor. Trail continues down a ridge to rocky beach. Recommend walking clockwise to get steep climb portion done at start of the hike. Or, to access beach portion only, take trail counterclockwise as out-and-back.
A nice trail great views and at the halfway point there was a dog beach. You need a park pass to park at any trail
Great hike! A new favorite. Take the loop that includes the beach.
Gorgeous moderate trail with some light climbing. Really beautiful overlooks and water side paths.
Lovely hike with amazing views! One way is easy, but the return journey involves a steep and challenging climb, making it quite tough. Parking is limited, so it’s best to arrive early. Overall, I highly recommend it for those looking for a rewarding outdoor experience!

Really steep hike, but such a rewarding payoff at the top and loop around the summit.
Please don't bother going here. It's a bore.

My wife and I stopped here on a day with on and off rain. One of the volunteers was working and she couldn’t have been nicer! We ended up strolling through the gardens and had a nice chat, learning lots about various butterflies! No wild butterflies yet in June but had a lovely visit.
What a fantastic find! Beautifully landscaped! Wonderful view of the lake with picnic tables, benches and they even have a swing set. We loved it! Definitely stop in for a quick stroll and give a donation.
Visited in early October not expecting to see many butterflies but was pleasantly surprised! The grounds were beautiful and even late in the season, we were lucky to see some butterflies. The park was easy to get to and had a small sized parking lot. Great place to stop and visit!
Don't miss this little garden. The bees and butterflies are beautiful. A naturalist on-site gave me advice for my own yard. Butterflies are fascinating. Check it out!
We went on a Sunday afternoon in late August. Saw some monarchs, and the flowers were in full bloom and beautiful.
Complete hidden gem on the west side of the island. We bought dinner to go every day for a week and ate it here all by ourselves among the flowers and birds.
A really lovely little pollinator garden with a beautiful view of the water in the rear. We visited in early August and it was at its peak, with bees and butterflies happily flitting from blossom to blossom everywhere. Very worth a stop.
Gorgeous park with quite a few butterflies! You have to look closely as you drive south, the sign and park are both small and not super visible from the road. Wife and I had the place to ourselves for at least a half hour, this is a little gem in a “less traveled” part of Desert Island

Lovely museum and gallery with amazing carvings and paintings. Very well cared for by knowledgeable staff. They run carving courses too, I wish I had the time to do that!
This was a nice little stop we made on a rainy day. This was recommended on an online thread and had marked it down. Very interesting little museum displaying the remarkable work of Wendell Gilley, a local artist known for his intricate bird wood carvings. Only $10 per person, quick little stop but definitely worth the visit!
A very sweet little museum dedicated to Wendell Gilley - an extremely talented wood sculptor. His birds are spectacular, and his story is great. I really enjoyed my time here. There was also a special exhibit of textile art that was equally enchanting. I get the feeling that the museum is different each time you visit. ❤️🐦🦆🦉🐦‍⬛🦅
Even though this museum is small, my visit was one of the most delightful museum experiences of my life. So much love and care went into the art and it's curation! Visiting here is a must for lovers of birds, nature, art, and craftsmanship.
Loved this place, I didn’t really know anything at all about wooden bird carvings but I learned a lot in an hour. Definitely worth an hour of your time. If you like birds, this is fascinating and beautiful.
Very enjoyable visit. The curator was most helpful to orient us to the museum’s content and origin. Local wood carvers were present and shared the process of carving.
Tiny, quirky local museum dedicated to one man's passion for carving birds. How good could it possibly be? It's *lovely*, and well worth a stop for an hour or two. There's also regular classes which are excellent, and a small specialized library.
Great museum—amazing pieces, friendly staff, lots of events. I guess if you don’t like birds (crazy) then maybe skip it

We liked this place right off the bat! In the front there are used books you can grab for a donation amount of your choosing, completely honor system. Kate (staff) is very friendly and knowledgeable about local and library history, we loved her recommendations on things to do! Not to mention the Legos
What a gem of a library -wonderful staff- a cozy part and a busier section with a privacy booth upstairs! It also serves as a gallery with wonderful local art everywhere.
Very quaint, cozy, and well organized library. We went for a book sale and just loved the relaxing atmosphere and very friendly staff.
This library is cute as can be. They have such comfortable spaces with well-stocked shelves. It's also a huge hit for kids. They've got legos, games, and an entire children's space just waiting to be explored.
I keep remembering this library and the cozy, friendly atmosphere. I dream of just sitting in that entry room, reading the paper, researching, watching people. Do you actually use the fireplace? I'm searching for libraries with fireplaces. Maybe there is one closer to home. Thank you for being.
Quaint library, just what you'd expect in a small town. Copier and computers available for all patrons
Nice that they offer FREE WIFI but it doesn't work!
Great place and art auction coming up to support the library.

Day hikes on a 938-ft-high peak, 1 of 2 summits comprising Western Mountain in Acadia National Park.
Slide 1 of 2
One of my favorite summits in Acadia. We took the trail clockwise (Cold brook trail to Mansell mountain trail to perpendicular trail to long pond trail). It is a bit of a steep, slippery trail on the Mansell mountain trail, so that is why I recommend clockwise (up slippery, down the ccc stairway). Enjoy the few views you get along the way, there aren't a lot of obvious, clear overlooks.
This summit is located on the Southwest Harbor on Mount Desert Island. Another quiet peak compared the others. It’s within close proximity to Notch so you can probably knock them out the same day if you’re an moderate or advanced hiker. It’s not a super high peak but it provides some beautiful views and fun trails along the way.

I traveled to Bar Harbor with a family group and attended this cruise twice, with different family members each time. I joined the sunset cruise and also did an afternoon cruise. I really enjoyed each cruise though each were very different experiences. The sunset cruise was very busy with a full boat, a nice guitarist on board who was singing, and there was a bar where drinks could be purchased. We actually boarded earlier than we were originally advised so arrive early and allow plenty of time for parking in downtown. We got lucky and had a very nice sunset. The afternoon cruise was half as busy so lots more room to move around. There was some fog which shifted, returned, and then shifted again. There is no bar or music on the afternoon cruise so bring refreshments and just enjoy the ride! I’ve seen reviews here that the staff were not interactive and I didn’t find that to be the case at all. The captain pointed out interesting places and provided information when appropriate. Please note this is not a nature cruise but you may chance upon wildlife. If you just want a nice cruise into Frenchman Bay on a beautiful schooner this is great.
We had a wonderful time on the Margaret Todd Schooner! She was so majestic looking while docked in the bay. The weather was perfect for our sunset cruise and we couldn’t have asked for a better excursion. Highly recommend your team!!
Such a beautiful and relaxing experience. We couldn’t have asked for better weather. The ride was so smooth and the ocean was like glass for us. If you’re looking for something to do at sunset, I 10/10 recommend booking the Margaret Todd. The staff were super friendly and it was such a nice way to wind down the night.
We booked a round-trip on the Cranberry Cove Ferry through Downeast Windjammer. It was a quick ride on a spacious, comfortable boat. The service was on-time and the crew was friendly. We had a fun day on Great Cranberry! It's definitely worth a day trip if you're on MDI for the week.
A beautiful, tranquil sunset cruise. When we decide to travel to Bar Harbor for vaca with our dogs in tow, we never thought we’d be able to take them on a sail boat. Now these guys frequent small fishing boats, so I knew they would enjoy this and boy did they ever... They loved all the attention, the wind in their hair, and one even fell asleep during the cruise. The live folk music was a lovely touch. We also enjoyed being able to purchase a beer on board. Truly a beautiful evening on the harbor and if we ever come back, we’ll gladly book another sail.
I have a mobility impairment and followed the directions in advance. I walked where I could walk, and my partner brought the rollator down. some staff were very helpful, including the woman at the staircase on the boat, the young man on the other end, and Kate and a manager who has a 2 Hour Dr. drive who helped to push me up the steep ramp. Make sure people know what it will take to get down. I thought the boat was over subscribed which distracted from the enjoyment of the cruise. There was not much wind and it ended up being a very short Ride but I was able to see a great sunset and appreciated the opportunity to be on the water. I hope you will consider selling fewer tickets, maybe increasing the price point. I know you need to make money and cover your costs but so many people made it much less enjoyable. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to participate.
Beautiful and relaxing sail around Frenchman's Bay in Bar Harbor. Cool reproduction of a four masted sailing schooner. The crew is friendly and full of information. You can help raise the sails or sit back and relax. Great way to spend a few hours and we'll worth the ticket price. Go for it and have a beautiful day on the bay.
We took this adorable ferry on a very pleasant and scenic round trip voyage to the Schoodic portion of Acadia National Park and to Winter Harbor for a day of memorable hiking and exploring. The ferry service was very well organized, great pricing, with a pleasant and knowledgeable staff. A total 5-star experience! Highly recommend!
