Loved it. What a wonder place. It rivals many of the more popular parks and preserves in beauty and views, but is significantly less traveled making it an excellent experience.
Warning visitors center is closed on Monday’s and has very short hours on other days. The visitors center is located on a University campus, not adjacent to the scenic drive. Nice little scenic drive. However, my one big complaint is the scenic pull offs are very poorly maintained. Highly suggest a four wheel drive SUV or truck for this trip.
Awesome!!! You can swim too! We took a trail down to the rocks and had an awesome time. You will find a swimming hole/area if you keep going down to Little Falls.
Bob and I recently went on a 3-day camping trip to Desoto State Park in Alabama and visited the Little River Canyon National Preserve atop Lookout Mountain in Alabama. Nearly the entire length of the Little River flows along the middle of Lookout Mountain from Georgia to Alabama. The National Canyon Preserve protects a 25-mile stretch of the river that runs through a deep canyon carved by the river over millions of years. A must do is The Little River Canyon Rim Parkway a scenic drive that runs the length of the canyon, beginning at the falls and ending at the Canyon Mouth Park, is a scenic drive with several overlooks. There are also some hiking trails that go to the bottom of the canyon. We begin our trip to the National Preserve at the Little River Falls. An ADA-accessible boardwalk overlooks the 45-foot-high falls and a hiking trail to the water. Visitors can swim in the Blue Hole, a beautiful pool of water above the falls, or, when the water is calm, in the deeper pool below the falls. The size of the parking lot near the falls suggests that this place gets very crowded on hot summer weekends. The overlook offers a beautiful view of the falls and the pool of water below, while the view from the Highway 35 bridge between DeKalb and Cherokee counties showcases the top of the falls and the beginning of the canyon. Before embarking on your drive along the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway you can use the restrooms here, as the next facilities will be at the other end of the parkway. What a hidden gem! Highly recommend for views and waterfalls!
I recommend this part to everyone. From the office to the scenic drives, to the waterfalls, to the hiking on the side of the mountain, to the incredible steps that take you down into the bottom of the gorge. There is something for everyone.
This place is amazing!! We could easily spend all day here and then some! It was very unclear if they allowed travel trailers/rvs so we took a chance and it was great! There was plenty of room in their visitor center parking lot for us. We could have easily unhooked and done the whole loop if we had time. We did the junior ranger here and an amazing kid friendly trail behind the visitor center. The visitor center itself is really extraordinary - so many kids activities I was so impressed! We were able to see the water fall right near the visitor center before heading out which did have RV parking. We didn’t try the loop as we didn’t have time unfortunately! What a hidden gem!
Absolutely beautiful waterfalls. Our girls trip was wonderful. Easy walk to the falls.

We have held the Johnson family reunion here for 40 something years now where most of our family from all over the southeast US converges to enjoy a long weekend together. We always enjoy our time here whether we're in an A-frame chalet or a rustic cabin. They have two dog friendly cabins which we always take advantage of, as well as a fire pit (bring camp chairs), a front porch that used to be screened (but is no longer screened and that is something I do miss). There is a fully equipped kitchen, although I always prefer to pack my favorite easy-clean pans, skillets and utensils. The cabins have a wood-burning fireplace indoors as well so the cabins typically do smell a bit like campfire indoors-something to note if you were sensitive to that. Their front desk is always helpful with information regarding the local hikes available. There is a park, a volleyball court, and a swimming pool, on site as well as a store with basic food and camping supplies and gifts. You can buy firewood there as well as fire starters, lighters etc. at the country store they have also subtracted the screaming eagle zip line and that's something you can also pay to do. It's about $70 per person which is a little bit steep considering the zip line but our two teenagers had fun doing this. There's also a kayaking tour available nearby and that something a big group of our family did together that was fun. There are trails right from the state park as well as numerous local trails and things to do. De Soto Falls in Indian River, Falls and Little River Canyon scenic Drive, and Little River Canyon Center are also something I'd recommend along the way. The country music group Alabama has a museum about 20 minutes away since they are from Fort Payne as well. Because there is bear activity, you have to take your trash to the front desk to dispose of it and dumpsters. We have over the years, found a dead scorpion between our sheets, and this particular year ticks are extremely active and have had multiple people with ticks on them, even not being in the woods just walking through the grass so just a heads up to remember to check for ticks! This is a state park that we really enjoy.
Beautiful place, waterfalls, hiking trails, pool and campground. Restaurant open on the weekends. Different picnic areas, dog friendly. Some easy hikes and some strenuous if you want to get to the bottom of DeSoto falls.
This is officially one of my favorite state parks now! Everyone was so friendly! The staff and campers. I felt very welcome here. Lots and lots of stuff to do with just the campground! Including the DeSoto falls. The only negative thing was the roads in and out we're so dangerously steep. But if you can make the climb, then it's definitely worth this stay!
🌲 DeSoto State Park – A Hidden Gem in Alabama! 🌊 DeSoto State Park is truly a gem! Conveniently located just eight miles northeast of Fort Payne, Alabama, it’s nestled atop the breathtaking Lookout Mountain. The park is surrounded by rushing waterfalls, peaceful trails, and the sweet fragrance of wildflowers that will absolutely take your breath away. The cabins are gorgeous — so well maintained and beautifully kept! The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the trails, always ready to help and share great tips. And the restaurant… Wow! The food is absolutely amazing, full of flavor, and served with such warm hospitality. From the peace and tranquility of nature to the soothing sound of the waterfalls, this place is pure healing for the soul. I didn’t want to leave! I can’t wait to come back and experience this slice of paradise again. 🌿💧✨
We’ve camped here two years in a row and drive the 13 hours because we LOVE it here. It’s so nice and calm in primitive camping. Theres the options to showers and flush toilets in the main campground included if you’d like them. Some good little hikes in the area & our dog just loves the fall foliage
My cousin and I spent 3 days at the state park primitive campground. It was so quiet and peaceful. The entire park was well appointed. The hiking paths were clear and easily accessible.
Let me begin with a couple of things 1) I came just for the DeSoto waterfall; 2) There are other activities and lodging throughout the premises; 3) For non-Alabama residents, this DeSoto Falls is located in Alabama. Getting there can be a little adventurous due to spotty cellphone reception thoroughout the mountains. Save/download/print out the directions before you go. Also once you've crossed into the park, follow the posted signage to reach your final destination. If you are planning to hike down to DeSoto Waterfall basin/pool, its entrance is the unmarked parking lot about 5 mins from the picnic/observation area. Following the directions provided by the park will lead you to an observation point. Double back and look for the vacant parking strip, that's the trail entrance. There's limited space availability and parking on the grass is prohibited. I did the trail along the river edge to the basin. It's a moderate level hike as the trail has a steep incline section, large boulders and exposed tree roots along the naturally wooded and humidity retaining narrow path. It definitely isn't paved so proper attire and hydration is recommended for you to bring. The path is clearly marked along the trees. Pics I'm posting are from the trail. Yes I would do this trail again but as I mentioned there are some other activities and sights to see in the state park. The visitor center has supplies and well stocked. Bathrooms were clean and orderly. Staff members were friendly and helpful.
Quick walk from the parking lot to the falls viewing area down a flight of cement steps. At the landing you can walk out on top of the falls and you can walk to the end of the railing along the cliff and see the full length of the falls. A dam right above the falls forms a lake in front of the parking lot. Nice peaceful area. Restrooms there and a they are building an attached gift shop and heating the whole thing so it can be used on a more year round basis instead of shutting the water down during the winter. Worth a stop if you are nearby.

We started are hike here. If you want closer fall parking the parking lot before the bridge is where to park. We enjoy long hikes from this parking lot to the small falls and back was almost 3 1/2 miles We also enjoy the gift shop we have walking sticks that have all are medallions on, so don’t forget to stop in and shop a little. The bathrooms are very clean. The scenic drive was amazing. Stop writing on the rocks 🪨 we don’t care you were here on this date. Please and thank you
We did a quick jaunt to LRC. The views are always impeccable. It was nice to a little water over the falls considering how dry it's been. I was disappointed about not being about to visit the Mouth, but $15 seems pretty steep. I know the money is used to maintain the area, but still...
Nice center. Medium sized venue with plenty of parking and an overflow lot. They do events here. Get your America The Beautiful passes here. NPS stamps. Gift shop. Comfy lounging area. Park rangers and other staff super friendly and helpful. Went again 12/24 watch the movie in the LRC Center. Very interesting and informative. Geothermal HVAC is neat.
Informative short movie, friendly park service staff. DOG FRIENDLY! We were able to bring our dog in and he cooled off and enjoyed the movie with our family. Gift shop has the typical NPS magnets, junior ranger vests, toys, keepsakes, etc. Plenty of parking. You can hike a trail from LRC visitors center but we chose to view the falls from the bridge at The Little River Falls Overlook, also a pet friendly area. Beautiful part of the country with a lovely scenic drive-don't miss the canyon scenic drive as it's also beautiful. NPS stamp station for those who collect National Park, Conservancy, Monument, and Historic Site stamps. This is within 30 minutes of DeSoto State Park as well. We visit annually and spend a long weekend at the state park, do some kayaking, hiking, scenic drive and view falls.
We visited this building for the NPS information for the Little River Canyon Preserve. We got our stamps and brochure. The ladies in the bookstore were SO nice. They had some great items. The girls at the front desk were okay.
Nice visitors center for the canyon area. The volunteers were also very helpful. There was even a volunteer standing in the rain at the falls parking area. We didn't hike because of the heavy rain, but will be going back soon. We did walk to the falls viewing area.... very nice boardwalk. Skip the toilets at the falls parking area.... go to the visitor center.
Beautiful area. Easy access to waterfalls and canyon views.
Nice little scenic drive with beautiful overlooks

This was a great trip. Awesome to see the town and canyon loved and written about by Randy Owen. I know it sounds silly but I asked God if I could run into Randy in town. That didn't happen but we did run by his home.
Second time visiting. Really enjoyed it and looking at the bands history and accomplishments. Been a fan of there's as far back as I can remember and I'm almost 50.
Great museum, lots of awards and memorabilia, Fantastic for an Alabama Fan. The gift shop is great, lots of shirts, hats, posters and other merchandise for sale. Highly recommended for an Alabama Fan, it was on my bucket list over 30 years and I finally got there.
If you’re an ALABAMA fan, this place is a must do! Great experience and lots of memorabilia. The gift shop is also very good. Adorable little grandma at the counter is a wealth of information and will provide a map to Randy’s home 😍
What a great time we had in the museum. Very entertaining and informative. The staff was super nice! I was shocked at how much stuff they had. Way better than I have it credit for.
Great place to see the history of a great country band we love
This museum is very well put together. Being a fan of the group Alabama and then moving down here from Illinois was a real delight. I actually see Teddy Gentry at my work every now and again and it's nice to see people just act normal when he is around. He is a very nice down to earth guy.
Our first visit to the Alabama Museum. It was wonderful to stop and see their pictures and memorabilia. Was very interesting and enjoyable. The sweet ladies were obviously their biggest fans.

The Hippie hole is awesome. Such a beautiful site. I always enjoy going in the water. Wear water shoes! It gets slimy from the slim. We have been here like 5 times this year. Will definitly be back
It's a parking lot. It serves it's duty with honor and dignity. Easy to get to, tons of spaces, and centrally located restrooms. Very close to the falls

Great service, very friendly. Answered my husband's million questions. Received ornaments in a week via usps (shipping was under $20 total for 2 to our address) and they were wrapped good. Turned out beautiful. Thank you. Will definitely do it again. Also their gallery was awesome. We missed the soft open of the new one in town but can't wait to visit again.
Just a fantastic experience from start to finish. Getting there can be a touch frightful: there's a 23 or so percent grade leading to the property, which, for the uninitiated, means what looks like a straight-down drop-off for a driveway. But once you make that leap of faith you will be rewarded for it with a peaceful, serene, idyllic setting for your glassblowing adventure. The people were amazing-- friendly, knowledgeable, and forgiving. Among my group was my amazing 5yo who didn't quite grasp the ins and outs of "blow" vs. "Don't blow," but the instructor never flinched. He just kept resetting the rig so that she could try again, right up until we assured him that we wanted her imperfect piece just the way it was. More than anything, the country setting allowed me to set aside my personal crisis for a couple of hours. I won't get into it, but some bad stuff was going on for me that day, and the simple act of being in that setting made me forget about myself for a couple of hours. And that is priceless. Oh! And the glass is beautiful! Great pieces available at proper prices. If you've seen "Blown Away" on Netflix, you'll recognize some of the work. Also... ODIE! Could not more highly recommend this place.
I have been taking my nephew to Orbix to blow our own Christmas ornaments for several years now. Over the years, we have added his sister and my mom to our tradition. Despite the fact that we only go once a year, members of the staff remember that we go every year which speaks volumes about how much they care about their customers. They are truly amazing people. They have fun games to play while you wait. They also have the cutest gift shop you can shop in. We love our ornaments. I hope one day to have a tree with nothing but orbix ornaments! I have a friend that has gone and done a flower which turned out beautiful. Personally I have not done anything but an ornament, but I can't wait for the chance to do so!
Beautiful work! You can make your own ornament, fun to do and watch.
This is a special place. A beautiful drive through the mountains will bring to to this unique in the country. Nicely decorated on the outside with checker boards and rocking chairs with a wonderful view. You do have to make an appointment and it is a great day trip for schools and Churches. They easily accommodated our group of 12. The process is well planned and executed. Everyone gets to make an ornament while the others watch. Truly fascinating this process. If you don’t want to make your own ornament you can purchase one in the gift shop. There is everything from glass candy canes to beautiful bowls you can buy. I would say, yes, take friends and family and enjoy!
Wonderful experience! Every employee we encountered was super nice. We did the ornament making and it was great. You get to choose two colors for your ornament. The little store is nice and a perfect place to buy a unique gift for someone. I see a lot of comments about pricing being too high but I think pricing was very reasonable.. It's art. The cherry on top was the pup who lounges around the shop!
I contacted Orbix about a group tour of their facility. Our group had been here previously. There had never been a fee for the tour previously probably because of the add on fees for blown ornaments and other purchases. I was never advised of a current fee. When we were ready to leave I was advised of a fee of $170 for the tour. Had I been advised of this before our arrival I could have made an informed decision regarding our participation. I advise you to proceed carefully as once I was told of the fee the receptionist went into an obviously pre planned statement of using this experience as a learning tool. I suspect this is used repeatedly.
Excellent experience. Friendly staff, beautiful gift shop, affordable activity.

True Adventure Sports has ALWAYS been my family’s go to for making fun memories to last a lifetime! We’ve brought our children and grandchildren rock climbing , night hiking and repelling . There is something for everyone!Dont hesitate to give Isreal and his team a try! You won’t regret it!!
My husband loved his experience and learned so much. Everyone was accommodating and answered all our questions. Wished he wouldn't had talked so much at check in and could've got a 3rd repell in since it was only 2 people that day. Nonetheless he had a great time. I paid an additional $15 (walker fee) to drive him to spot (we followed our guide) and stand on a cliff and take pictures/videos in a public area. I guess it's a small price to pay for all the knowledge and experience he got. The guides did answer any of my questions as well and I felt included even though I didn't repell. Can't wait to take hubby back for a class.
Got my refund back but disappointed my rappelling session had to be cancelled since I was the only one that booked for Monday. It wasn’t mentioned anywhere prior that a minimum 3 person booking was required. Not until I got an email today saying that.
I had some time to kill on a February weekend while working in Huntsville so I reserved a time to do some rappelling with True Adventure Sports. I was not disappointed. Isiah and Junior were very knowledgeable and professional. Prior to arriving to the rappelling site (which was a short drive from the business) they stopped at an overlook for a view of the canyon and discussed some of the local edible plants which was very interesting. At the rappelling site I was able to get three rappels down an 80+ foot cliff. They were very professional on their procedures and you can tell that their first priority was safety. Afterwards they provided me with local areas of interest to check out while I was in the area. I definitely enjoyed my time there and thought it was reasonable for the price. I would use their services again if I ever return to the area.
Really great people who want you to get the most out of your adventure. Our guide was vastly knowledgeable about the landscape, the rock climbing was excellent, and they gave constant encouragement to keep going and push the most out of the trip. Highly recommend if you want to try rock climbing in true nature.
We had an incredible experience with True Adventure Sports! This was our second time going on the Caving Adventure! We are customers for life!! Israel and his team are incredibly skilled, knowledgeable, genuine and personable! My 8 yr old daughter came with us both times. They made everyone, especially our daughter feel truly special! She’s already looking forward to when we come back next year!! As are we!!
No complaints here, absolutely worth it! My family and I went on the rock climbing adventure and it was absolutely amazing! We had four guides with us (Abigail, Franky, Emmy, and Kim), and they were fantastic. Very fun to be around, but also very professional, attentive, encouraging, and knowledgeable. They were especially great with the three young kids (9, 7, and 5) who had never rock climbed before and were nervous. Definitely recommend going, and we'll be going back ourselves.
Amazing experiencing with TAS crew. We rappelled in Little River Canyon with them. It was our first time ever rappelling (my 9 year old daughter did this as well.) For starters, the location was absolutely beautiful. The staff were so knowledgeable, provided each of us with individual instruction, and I felt safe and secure with them the entire time. This experience was by far the best activity I did while in that area. I highly recommend this place! We loved the staff who made this our best adventure yet.

The Fort Payne Depot Museum is a wonderful collection of local history and memorabilia. The building is great and very well preserved. There are at least three collections here. One on the indigenous people, another on the railroad depot and a third on local military veterans. The museum is packed full of wonderful artifacts and the staff are friendly and super knowledgeable. A great spot to visit.
🚂 Take a step back in time at the Fort Payne Depot Museum! This stunning 1891 pink sandstone depot, built in the Richardson Romanesque style, once served passengers of the Alabama Great Southern Railroad until 1970. Today, it’s filled with rich local history — from railroad memorabilia and handcrafted 1913 dioramas to Native American artifacts and more. But the real hidden gem? A charming children’s area tucked inside a reversed caboose! 🎨🚂 Hand-painted murals and a mini train make it the perfect spot for little explorers. Our little had the best time learning, climbing, and discovering — and the best part? Admission is FREE (donations welcomed)! A must-visit for families, history buffs, and anyone who loves a good local treasure.
This place is facinating. Great old building and history to go along with this package deal. Not just railroad history but, local, indian, military, and railroad. Cindy was a great knowledge of all of it and the back stories. If you enjoy history of any kind, this is a great stop to make!
Great informational Tourist attraction! I totally can understand back when there was flash photography as to why they wouldn't allow pictures to be taken, BUT with today's digital cameras in cellphones there is NO WAY the different momento's and stuff on display will get damaged. Vacationers traveling in Motorhome's/RV's LOVE to share their travels with other fellow RV Travelers on Blogs and Facebook etc etc. What better advertisement can you get??! Not being able to take pictures to share is just terrible! Your County Commissioners NEED to re-think and CHANGE that OLD Rule they created so many years ago!! I was only able to take a few pictures of the outside and a silly train caboose.
The hours of operation said 10am-3pm. The website said open. There were no cars in the parking garage and the doors were locked. We arrived at 10:19am. I called the number on line to get information and there was no answer. We took a picture of the caboose outside and left disappointed. Definitely need to fix the hours or be here on time to open for people.
Person there was very knowledgeable about town and area. They do not allow photos. Shame. Nice little museum. About 45mins it took. No charge but they do take "suggested donations". Over all nice
Lovely place, the lady inside with her kid gave a warm reception & forewarned regarding rains and subsequent delays, just opposite to the entrance are public 🚻 so do visit this place as it's absolutely free 👌

Fascinating old building with a great variety of old stuff to browse. We went in just to look and left with a dozen little items. The owners are super kind and know a lot about the history of the building. There's a really neat feeling within those walls.
We had a great experience on the dog friendly patio. We had the Cuban sandwich and it was super delicious. Service was super friendly, if a little slow. Great dinner, would recommend for sure!
A bit warm inside, but it was fun to wander and shop.
I was so pleased with all the great things in this store. It was too cold to thoroughly enjoy it even though they had heat on. I want to go back and spend all day later on. I found a couple of things I liked. The old building is worth the trip not to mention the great inventory. Love this place.
Looking for treasures? Nostalgic? This is the place! Enjoy a nice meal at the café after finding something to remember a visit to North Alabama.
Lots to look at in the consignment booths. I wish there was more of the buildings history to enjoy. Didn't try the restaurant, but looks like it could be worth a try.
It's fun. Little flea market type stalls with some vintage collectibles. Cool history exhibits there as well.
My husband and I both left out with goodies. So much different stuff to look through. We loved shopping here and would go back.

Nice clean park with a medium sized modern playground. Also a splash pad.
I just stopped in to eat my food. Sat in my car. Walking trail park is a good place though. Great for gatherings, picnics, kids to play, etc...
Cute, mostly clean, and convenient. There are plenty of walking trails that are very easy and well maintained. There is a splash pad that is pretty small In comparison but, it's great for toddlers and a pretty sweet little playground. Restrooms are why I say mostly clean. Seems like it would be pretty dog friendly, there is a small picnic area with three tables along with a pretty fair amount of benches.
AL Walking Trail park was a fun stop along my trip west over to Scottsboro on a Saturday afternoon. The park is kept up nicely, the feel is safe, nothing sketchy going on that I could detect and plenty of open space with paved walkways. The kids had a large play area and the adults seemed content to socialize and enjoy a BBQ picnic beneath a large sheltered area. Everyone was having a good time. There was a birthday party going on with tons of families and kids having a great time. Being a road warrior and observer, I really just needed to get out of the car (it was probably a 150 mile trip I was on) to get my blood flowing again after being behind the wheel so long. This park is conveniently located right along the highway and provides ample, free parking and clean bathrooms. Think, "Rest Area - with enhanced amenities." There are multiple food options nearby.
It's pretty nice the thing is that there is a taco truck across the street their is Firme.
always very clean. you can tell they are well maintained! i love to walk here on my lunch breaks. the sunset is always gorgeous!!
Apparently the Alabama band gives a lot to ensure their hometown remains a great place to visit
Clean and cute but super small.
