Little River Canyon National Preserve is a stunning nature preserve located in northeast Alabama, spanning 15,288 acres across Cherokee and DeKalb Counties. Often referred to as the Grand Canyon of the East, it encompasses the breathtaking Little River Canyon and the longest mountaintop river in the United States. The preserve is home to diverse wildlife and rare plants, making it a unique environment for nature enthusiasts.
Loved it. What a wonder place. It rivals many of the more popular parks and preserves in beauty and views, but is significantly less traveled making it an excellent experience.

Warning visitors center is closed on Monday’s and has very short hours on other days. The visitors center is located on a University campus, not adjacent to the scenic drive. Nice little scenic drive. However, my one big complaint is the scenic pull offs are very poorly maintained. Highly suggest a four wheel drive SUV or truck for this trip.
Susan H — Google review
Awesome!!! You can swim too! We took a trail down to the rocks and had an awesome time. You will find a swimming hole/area if you keep going down to Little Falls.
Jeysson B — Google review
Bob and I recently went on a 3-day camping trip to Desoto State Park in Alabama and visited the Little River Canyon National Preserve atop Lookout Mountain in Alabama. Nearly the entire length of the Little River flows along the middle of Lookout Mountain from Georgia to Alabama. The National Canyon Preserve protects a 25-mile stretch of the river that runs through a deep canyon carved by the river over millions of years. A must do is The Little River Canyon Rim Parkway a scenic drive that runs the length of the canyon, beginning at the falls and ending at the Canyon Mouth Park, is a scenic drive with several overlooks. There are also some hiking trails that go to the bottom of the canyon. We begin our trip to the National Preserve at the Little River Falls. An ADA-accessible boardwalk overlooks the 45-foot-high falls and a hiking trail to the water. Visitors can swim in the Blue Hole, a beautiful pool of water above the falls, or, when the water is calm, in the deeper pool below the falls. The size of the parking lot near the falls suggests that this place gets very crowded on hot summer weekends. The overlook offers a beautiful view of the falls and the pool of water below, while the view from the Highway 35 bridge between DeKalb and Cherokee counties showcases the top of the falls and the beginning of the canyon. Before embarking on your drive along the Little River Canyon Rim Parkway you can use the restrooms here, as the next facilities will be at the other end of the parkway. What a hidden gem! Highly recommend for views and waterfalls!

I recommend this part to everyone. From the office to the scenic drives, to the waterfalls, to the hiking on the side of the mountain, to the incredible steps that take you down into the bottom of the gorge. There is something for everyone.

This place is amazing!! We could easily spend all day here and then some! It was very unclear if they allowed travel trailers/rvs so we took a chance and it was great! There was plenty of room in their visitor center parking lot for us. We could have easily unhooked and done the whole loop if we had time. We did the junior ranger here and an amazing kid friendly trail behind the visitor center. The visitor center itself is really extraordinary - so many kids activities I was so impressed! We were able to see the water fall right near the visitor center before heading out which did have RV parking. We didn’t try the loop as we didn’t have time unfortunately! What a hidden gem!

Absolutely beautiful waterfalls. Our girls trip was wonderful. Easy walk to the falls.

State park
Nature & Parks
Nestled atop Lookout Mountain in Northeast Alabama, DeSoto State Park spans 3,502 acres and offers a picturesque natural retreat. Known for its waterfalls, fragrant wildflowers, and serene environment, the park provides various accommodation options including luxury mountain chalets, log cabins, and rustic campsites. Visitors can indulge in a range of outdoor activities such as kayaking, fishing, swimming, hiking along 25 miles of trails or biking.
We have held the Johnson family reunion here for 40 something years now where most of our family from all over the southeast US converges to enjoy a long weekend together. We always enjoy our time here whether we're in an A-frame chalet or a rustic cabin. They have two dog friendly cabins which we always take advantage of, as well as a fire pit (bring camp chairs), a front porch that used to be screened (but is no longer screened and that is something I do miss). There is a fully equipped kitchen, although I always prefer to pack my favorite easy-clean pans, skillets and utensils. The cabins have a wood-burning fireplace indoors as well so the cabins typically do smell a bit like campfire indoors-something to note if you were sensitive to that. Their front desk is always helpful with information regarding the local hikes available. There is a park, a volleyball court, and a swimming pool, on site as well as a store with basic food and camping supplies and gifts. You can buy firewood there as well as fire starters, lighters etc. at the country store they have also subtracted the screaming eagle zip line and that's something you can also pay to do. It's about $70 per person which is a little bit steep considering the zip line but our two teenagers had fun doing this. There's also a kayaking tour available nearby and that something a big group of our family did together that was fun. There are trails right from the state park as well as numerous local trails and things to do. De Soto Falls in Indian River, Falls and Little River Canyon scenic Drive, and Little River Canyon Center are also something I'd recommend along the way. The country music group Alabama has a museum about 20 minutes away since they are from Fort Payne as well. Because there is bear activity, you have to take your trash to the front desk to dispose of it and dumpsters. We have over the years, found a dead scorpion between our sheets, and this particular year ticks are extremely active and have had multiple people with ticks on them, even not being in the woods just walking through the grass so just a heads up to remember to check for ticks! This is a state park that we really enjoy.

Beautiful place, waterfalls, hiking trails, pool and campground. Restaurant open on the weekends. Different picnic areas, dog friendly. Some easy hikes and some strenuous if you want to get to the bottom of DeSoto falls.
Kaja S — Google review
This is officially one of my favorite state parks now! Everyone was so friendly! The staff and campers. I felt very welcome here. Lots and lots of stuff to do with just the campground! Including the DeSoto falls. The only negative thing was the roads in and out we're so dangerously steep. But if you can make the climb, then it's definitely worth this stay!

🌲 DeSoto State Park – A Hidden Gem in Alabama! 🌊 DeSoto State Park is truly a gem! Conveniently located just eight miles northeast of Fort Payne, Alabama, it’s nestled atop the breathtaking Lookout Mountain. The park is surrounded by rushing waterfalls, peaceful trails, and the sweet fragrance of wildflowers that will absolutely take your breath away. The cabins are gorgeous — so well maintained and beautifully kept! The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about the trails, always ready to help and share great tips. And the restaurant… Wow! The food is absolutely amazing, full of flavor, and served with such warm hospitality. From the peace and tranquility of nature to the soothing sound of the waterfalls, this place is pure healing for the soul. I didn’t want to leave! I can’t wait to come back and experience this slice of paradise again. 🌿💧✨

We’ve camped here two years in a row and drive the 13 hours because we LOVE it here. It’s so nice and calm in primitive camping. Theres the options to showers and flush toilets in the main campground included if you’d like them. Some good little hikes in the area & our dog just loves the fall foliage
Adrianna L — Google review
My cousin and I spent 3 days at the state park primitive campground. It was so quiet and peaceful. The entire park was well appointed. The hiking paths were clear and easily accessible.
Julie T — Google review
Let me begin with a couple of things 1) I came just for the DeSoto waterfall; 2) There are other activities and lodging throughout the premises; 3) For non-Alabama residents, this DeSoto Falls is located in Alabama. Getting there can be a little adventurous due to spotty cellphone reception thoroughout the mountains. Save/download/print out the directions before you go. Also once you've crossed into the park, follow the posted signage to reach your final destination. If you are planning to hike down to DeSoto Waterfall basin/pool, its entrance is the unmarked parking lot about 5 mins from the picnic/observation area. Following the directions provided by the park will lead you to an observation point. Double back and look for the vacant parking strip, that's the trail entrance. There's limited space availability and parking on the grass is prohibited. I did the trail along the river edge to the basin. It's a moderate level hike as the trail has a steep incline section, large boulders and exposed tree roots along the naturally wooded and humidity retaining narrow path. It definitely isn't paved so proper attire and hydration is recommended for you to bring. The path is clearly marked along the trees. Pics I'm posting are from the trail. Yes I would do this trail again but as I mentioned there are some other activities and sights to see in the state park. The visitor center has supplies and well stocked. Bathrooms were clean and orderly. Staff members were friendly and helpful.
Ashley M — Google review
Quick walk from the parking lot to the falls viewing area down a flight of cement steps. At the landing you can walk out on top of the falls and you can walk to the end of the railing along the cliff and see the full length of the falls. A dam right above the falls forms a lake in front of the parking lot. Nice peaceful area. Restrooms there and a they are building an attached gift shop and heating the whole thing so it can be used on a more year round basis instead of shutting the water down during the winter. Worth a stop if you are nearby.

Specialty Museums
Nestled in Fort Payne, Alabama, the Fort Payne Depot Museum is housed in a former 1891 rail depot that once served as Alabama's great southern railroad passenger depot. The museum showcases local history through a permanent display and changing exhibits. The building itself boasts a sandstone design constructed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by architect Charles Taylor. Visitors can explore Native American artifacts, historical event scenes, and even step inside a former Norfolk Southern caboose.
The Fort Payne Depot Museum is a wonderful collection of local history and memorabilia. The building is great and very well preserved. There are at least three collections here. One on the indigenous people, another on the railroad depot and a third on local military veterans. The museum is packed full of wonderful artifacts and the staff are friendly and super knowledgeable. A great spot to visit.

🚂 Take a step back in time at the Fort Payne Depot Museum! This stunning 1891 pink sandstone depot, built in the Richardson Romanesque style, once served passengers of the Alabama Great Southern Railroad until 1970. Today, it’s filled with rich local history — from railroad memorabilia and handcrafted 1913 dioramas to Native American artifacts and more. But the real hidden gem? A charming children’s area tucked inside a reversed caboose! 🎨🚂 Hand-painted murals and a mini train make it the perfect spot for little explorers. Our little had the best time learning, climbing, and discovering — and the best part? Admission is FREE (donations welcomed)! A must-visit for families, history buffs, and anyone who loves a good local treasure.

This place is facinating. Great old building and history to go along with this package deal. Not just railroad history but, local, indian, military, and railroad. Cindy was a great knowledge of all of it and the back stories. If you enjoy history of any kind, this is a great stop to make!

Great informational Tourist attraction! I totally can understand back when there was flash photography as to why they wouldn't allow pictures to be taken, BUT with today's digital cameras in cellphones there is NO WAY the different momento's and stuff on display will get damaged. Vacationers traveling in Motorhome's/RV's LOVE to share their travels with other fellow RV Travelers on Blogs and Facebook etc etc. What better advertisement can you get??! Not being able to take pictures to share is just terrible! Your County Commissioners NEED to re-think and CHANGE that OLD Rule they created so many years ago!! I was only able to take a few pictures of the outside and a silly train caboose.

The hours of operation said 10am-3pm. The website said open. There were no cars in the parking garage and the doors were locked. We arrived at 10:19am. I called the number on line to get information and there was no answer. We took a picture of the caboose outside and left disappointed. Definitely need to fix the hours or be here on time to open for people.

Person there was very knowledgeable about town and area. They do not allow photos. Shame. Nice little museum. About 45mins it took. No charge but they do take "suggested donations". Over all nice

Vintage 1889 is a charming American restaurant located in Fort Payne, Alabama. Housed in a historic mill from 1889, the restaurant offers a delightful dining experience with its delicious American cuisine and an extensive selection of over 80 beers. Owned by Dr. Steve and Lynn Brewer, this establishment has become a favorite among locals and visitors alike for its delectable dishes served in a beautiful courtyard setting. Additionally, the venue features an antique mall called Big Mill Co.
The steak salad was wonderful. I'm not big on peppercorns, so I asked them to leave those off and add blue cheese crumbles & dressing. I highly recommend it! My husband enjoyed his chicken salad as well. It was great sitting outside & listening to the music!
BJ S — Google review
Not the best experience. When we arrived (around 5 pm), they were not super busy but let us know upfront they were short staffed in the kitchen so the food may take awhile, which was totally fine with us. It was a beautiful building, great atmosphere, very sweet staff. We ordered fried pickles as an appetizer, which were very good. Our food ended up not taking long at all, but that’s where the good experience ended. $25 is a bit steep for 6 pieces of shrimp and a tiny portion of creamed spinach. The corn medley had such a strong chemical taste that we could not eat it. While we were eating, the crowd picked up quickly and our server never came back to our table. After waiting 30 minutes for our ticket, we had to go to the bar to ask for our ticket and pay. Also ordered an appetizer to-go since the 6 shrimp wasn’t very filling. Took another 25 minutes to get the to-go fries.. so we were there for a full hour after we had finished eating. Maybe they were just having an off night but we will probably not be back.

We attended an event here held by a friend of my husband's. This was our first time here. This is a wonderful place to hold an event. The food was good. The decor wàs also unique.
Jan N — Google review
If you’re in Fort Payne, definitely skip this place. The last time I ate here was 7 years ago and it was amazing. Rather than get into full detail, I will state the basic. It took us 1 1/2 hours to get our food because the grill slip “fell in between the cracks of something in the kitchen”, as told to us by the waitress, who never realized that our food wasn’t given to us 🤔. I had to go ask about our food after an hour, as she never even stopped to ask us anything about refills, etc. Waitress was very confused about us even being there, which was rather strange, because she had walked past us at least 12 times. This was NOT a busy night at all, which was also baffling. She finally brought out our appetizer and then stated she would be taking those off of our bill due to the amount of time it took to come out. She told us if we could wait for 10 more minutes, they would bring out the main entrées and they wouldn’t charge us for those either. At this point, we waited so long so we decided to go ahead and wait. I ordered the fried butterfly shrimp basket, and my son ordered the barbecue bacon cheeseburger. Upon arrival 30 minutes later, not 10, there were 6 super tiny “butterflied” shrimp that we’re about paper thin and ALL breading; potato salad was lukewarm and tasted weird, like it was going bad; and the corn was overcooked and mushy. My sons burger came out black and charred, after he asked for medium, no bbq sauce on it and they gave him sweet potato fries instead of regular, which he also asked for. To add, this restaurant is very expensive for the quality that they offer. Last, but not least, the waitstaff was super rude and didn’t offer any apology, except one young lady who wasn’t our waitress. I attached a picture of my supposedly big butterflied shrimp. Whole meal was pitiful. We will never return, the other few people in the establishment also stated they will never return. It was just that bad folks. Definitely consider McDonald’s instead.

Can't believe Vintage 1889 has been here since 2012 and I am just now finding out about it. Food is excellent. I can recommend the Flatbread tomato pie, goat cheese pesto dip with pita, and Cuban sandwich. And they have beer! Small local family business. Friendly, helpful wait staff. (Special thanks to Danielle the cool bird rehabber.) This place is so interesting, they have bicycles hanging from the ceiling, and the front of a firetruck made into a window. (Yes kid-friendly.) Outdoor seating, in addition to quite a few tables with chairs inside. Good for families and groups. The restaurant is even attached to super cute Vintage 1889 antique shop with many booths full of collectibles. We will be back! Highly recommend.
Victoria E — Google review
If you travel through the area and are looking for a very cool "local" experience, it doesn't get any better than this. The restaurant is part of a historic, once world renowned sock making factory that makes for some amazing atmosphere. The staff was friendly and the food was prompt and delicious. They encouraged us to look around and we saw some of the old machines that still had thread in them from the day they were turned off. All this and it was only lunch time. I can't wait to pass back through on a Friday or Saturday night and see a band or just socialize with the locals and sample their dinner menu.
D S — Google review
Four of us stopped in for lunch. Left a little disappointed. The food was fine, nothing wrong with it, but certainly not memorable in any way. Ordered two soups, both were only lukewarm. Quantities were also small for both the cup and the bowl. The sandwiches again were ok, nothing really special. They didn’t have all the beers listed on the board. The waitress was not overly attentive or friendly. The final bill is not itemized. Place is ok, but we won’t be back.
Aleem G — Google review
Pizza tasted like school lunchroom pizza, but we liked it more than anything else. BBQ Bacon Burger was alright - kind of falling apart though, felt like it was missing a good sear on both sides. The live music was a great vibe and the staff was very friendly!

This museum is very well put together. Being a fan of the group Alabama and then moving down here from Illinois was a real delight. I actually see Teddy Gentry at my work every now and again and it's nice to see people just act normal when he is around. He is a very nice down to earth guy.

We started are hike here. If you want closer fall parking the parking lot before the bridge is where to park. We enjoy long hikes from this parking lot to the small falls and back was almost 3 1/2 miles We also enjoy the gift shop we have walking sticks that have all are medallions on, so don’t forget to stop in and shop a little. The bathrooms are very clean. The scenic drive was amazing. Stop writing on the rocks 🪨 we don’t care you were here on this date. Please and thank you

We did a quick jaunt to LRC. The views are always impeccable. It was nice to a little water over the falls considering how dry it's been. I was disappointed about not being about to visit the Mouth, but $15 seems pretty steep. I know the money is used to maintain the area, but still...

Nice center. Medium sized venue with plenty of parking and an overflow lot. They do events here. Get your America The Beautiful passes here. NPS stamps. Gift shop. Comfy lounging area. Park rangers and other staff super friendly and helpful. Went again 12/24 watch the movie in the LRC Center. Very interesting and informative. Geothermal HVAC is neat.

Informative short movie, friendly park service staff. DOG FRIENDLY! We were able to bring our dog in and he cooled off and enjoyed the movie with our family. Gift shop has the typical NPS magnets, junior ranger vests, toys, keepsakes, etc. Plenty of parking. You can hike a trail from LRC visitors center but we chose to view the falls from the bridge at The Little River Falls Overlook, also a pet friendly area. Beautiful part of the country with a lovely scenic drive-don't miss the canyon scenic drive as it's also beautiful. NPS stamp station for those who collect National Park, Conservancy, Monument, and Historic Site stamps. This is within 30 minutes of DeSoto State Park as well. We visit annually and spend a long weekend at the state park, do some kayaking, hiking, scenic drive and view falls.

Nice visitors center for the canyon area. The volunteers were also very helpful. There was even a volunteer standing in the rain at the falls parking area. We didn't hike because of the heavy rain, but will be going back soon. We did walk to the falls viewing area.... very nice boardwalk. Skip the toilets at the falls parking area.... go to the visitor center.

I was so pleased with all the great things in this store. It was too cold to thoroughly enjoy it even though they had heat on. I want to go back and spend all day later on. I found a couple of things I liked. The old building is worth the trip not to mention the great inventory. Love this place.

Lots to look at in the consignment booths. I wish there was more of the buildings history to enjoy. Didn't try the restaurant, but looks like it could be worth a try.

Nice clean park with a medium sized modern playground. Also a splash pad.

I just stopped in to eat my food. Sat in my car. Walking trail park is a good place though. Great for gatherings, picnics, kids to play, etc...
Jessica C — Google review
Cute, mostly clean, and convenient. There are plenty of walking trails that are very easy and well maintained. There is a splash pad that is pretty small In comparison but, it's great for toddlers and a pretty sweet little playground. Restrooms are why I say mostly clean. Seems like it would be pretty dog friendly, there is a small picnic area with three tables along with a pretty fair amount of benches.

AL Walking Trail park was a fun stop along my trip west over to Scottsboro on a Saturday afternoon. The park is kept up nicely, the feel is safe, nothing sketchy going on that I could detect and plenty of open space with paved walkways. The kids had a large play area and the adults seemed content to socialize and enjoy a BBQ picnic beneath a large sheltered area. Everyone was having a good time. There was a birthday party going on with tons of families and kids having a great time. Being a road warrior and observer, I really just needed to get out of the car (it was probably a 150 mile trip I was on) to get my blood flowing again after being behind the wheel so long. This park is conveniently located right along the highway and provides ample, free parking and clean bathrooms. Think, "Rest Area - with enhanced amenities." There are multiple food options nearby.

Barbecue restaurant
Sally's Smokin Butt BBQ is a popular restaurant in Fort Payne, Alabama, known for its delicious barbecue offerings. Set in an old gas station, this diner attracts both locals and tourists with its warm and friendly atmosphere. The menu features a wide variety of mouth-watering dishes including pork and brisket, ribs, chicken, sandwiches, and homemade desserts like cakes and pies.
Well service is not so great. But the brisket, the ribs and the potatoe salad were good. The pulled pork and the beans were nothing special. Not worth driving out of your way, portions are very small.
Mike W — Google review
This is a little place with big flavor. They smoke and cook their food and serve you that, fresh, daily. I got the pulled pork plate with baked beans and fried potatoes. The pork was fresh, tender, delicious, juicy, and not full of fat like other bbq places! The baked beans were good too, but the fried potatoes were fantastic - crispy, salted, flavorful, and delicious. Even the toast that comes on these plates was good. I also got iced tea, and it was fresh and delicious. I don't usually write a review for a place I've only been once, but I was incredibly impressed. I'm already planning the next time I can go back.

Off the chain! This was the highlight of our Alabama cuisine. Amazing BBQ!!! Great owners! They stayed open a little late so we could order and eat. Even the customers were friendly and helpful.
Susan G — Google review
We had Sally's Combo Plate with Ribs and Brisket, my Wife had Cole slaw and tater tots, I had Cole slaw and sliced fried baked potatoes. Plenty of food, Ribs was her favorite and I liked the Brisket best. The sliced fried baked potatoes were unique and had a great taste and their Cole slaw was mayonnaise based and we both liked it. The restaurant was clean and inviting. Sort of a step back in time, with the single restroom outback but it was very clean also. Food and service were good and the Staff was very friendly. Sally's is very popular and they were very busy. Try it, we enjoyed it 😀

After a day of trekking all over the country side, the food was excellent! Small little place with some character. I had beef brisket, my wife had pulled pork. We did not get any of their famous banana pudding, as they were out. We did have some lemon meringue pie.
Robert S — Google review
Super friendly and the food was fantastic - worth at least a six hour detour just to go there. The meat was better than the sides, but given that the meat was a religious experience, that's not in any way an insult. The chipotle slaw was interesting (I'm not a slaw person but it was definitely worth trying regardless).

A must stop when in Fort Payne if you are a BBQ lover. We either eat in the restaurant or get a to go order to take back to the RV campground at DeSoto State Park whenever we come to the park. The outside of the restaurant doesn’t look like much, but isn’t that the way it always is with good bbq?

Recreation center
Wills Valley Rec Center is a premier indoor sports facility in Fort Payne, offering various sports leagues and community activities. The center features a spacious gymnasium where locals engage in basketball and volleyball. Additionally, it boasts an indoor walking track with scenic views and a well-equipped fitness center complete with free weights and machines. Visitors can also enjoy amenities such as racquetball courts, table tennis, yoga classes, spinning sessions, and childcare services.
This is a great place to get in shape or stay in shape. They have a 1/10 mile walking track indoors for those who walk or run. They also have a terrific work out area with everything from free weights, weight machines, treadmills, etc. There are 2 racket ball courts and table tennis. I haven't tried out any of the classes, but many people take advantage of the yoga, spinning, & other classes. Childcare is available (at least in the morning). The locker rooms, steam room, sauna, restrooms, and showers are kept exceptionally clean. Their rates are the best in town and they do have greatly reduced rates for senior citizens.

I haven’t came here in a long time but this time I came in to sign my brothers up for soccer. An older lady “helped” me by handing me the clipboard and slapping the pen into it. After I was done with the forms she took it and said nothing. I was at the window waiting to get told the next step or for my money to be received. None of them helped me!! They were just staring at me and not one word. They proceed into moving or reading stuff on their desk?? I then proceed to ask what’s my total? And the older lady just asks the other lady my total. She then tells me my total and I give my money and ask for a receipt. Aside from this the lady spilt her drink on the forms I had just signed! I am not upset with the rec center as I have always enjoyed my time here. I am upset with the two ladies up front who did not want to help me for who knows what reason and for ignoring me and giving me a poor customer service.
Yesenia C — Google review
This is a great facility and used to be a very friendly gym. Now they’ve put up glass in front of the desk and an extra door you have to go through that sometimes they still don’t open for a while after you’ve scanned your pass. Feels like a gym in New York City now. They also decided that if you still have your yoga mat with you after yoga class you can’t bring it upstairs to keep it where you can see it while you walk the track and are going to make you walk back down the stairs and out to your car with it. Well, I’m disabled and in bad enough shape that if you make me walk out to my car I’m not coming back. Really discourages people from exercising. They call my yoga mat sleeve a “bag” and tell me no “bags” are allowed upstairs anymore for some unknown reason. Well there’s also a sign that says DO NOT DROP THE WEIGHTS but they never enforce that rule even though it makes my time in the gym very stressful when the guys do this. The door to one of the racquetball courts broke back before summer and wasn’t fixed for several months, and for some reason they decided that the entire court was nonfunctional without a door. Edit to add: more than one other employee has since told me the guy who yells at you about your yoga mat was wrong. I POLITELY let him know this and he proceeded to SHOUT AT ME ALL THE WAY DOWN ONE SIDE OF THE TRACK. He then confronted me when I came back around and shouted at me more, then told me to go downstairs and speak to a woman who thank god had an ounce of professionalism. Due to my neurological issues and this person’s behavior, I am now shaking violently, my heart is pounding and I am short of breath. My family will not renew our membership or continue to use this gym if this employee is permitted to speak to members this way.

I rate WVRC A+. The full time and part time staff are great. I'm happy that It's important to Liz Hall, director upstairs, that the equipment is clean and is always in good working order. I appreciate that Liz and Skylar are knowledgeable of what exercises and what equipment I use will help to meet my goals. Tracy, Robin, and Christian are always pleasant. I call WVRC "my home away from home." Only one request when figuring your budget - how about an additional NuCor for those members who use this equipment for pre and post workout for surgery. Regards, Donnah Crow

If you're looking for a delightful dining experience in Fort Payne, AL, look no further than Santa Fe Cattle Company. This charming eatery is part of an American chain renowned for its Southwestern-inspired menu that features mouthwatering hand-cut steaks, sizzling fajitas, and tender ribs. As you step inside, you'll be greeted by the playful sight of peanut shells scattered across the floor—a fun touch that kids adore while they wait for their meals.
Our server, Hannah Justice, was amazing! She recommended the BEST cocktail! My husband and I had steak and my daughter had chicken fingers. Everything was so good! Even the side salads were awesome. Thanks!

As a tourist, this restaurant went beyond my expectations. Got asked if we wanted rolls, and of course, we said yes. The rolls came no less than 1-2 minutes later. Lightning fast! I ordered a 6oz steak with a side of seasoned fries and a ranch salad. The salad was amazing, but I couldn't finish all of it since I wanted to save for my meal. The steak was a little dry and could've been better. When I laid eyes on the fries, my mouth watered!! The atmosphere was so lively. And a Yeehaw happy birthday to Noah, who caught the attention of many in the restaurant. The ride from the mountainside was truly beautiful, and I highly recommend other tourists to check out the sunset from a mountainside or a balcony during the evening. Thank you to our beautiful waitress, who recommended The Hatter Cafe to us. If she hadn't told us about it, we'd have to miss out on something amazing. Thank you, Santa Fe Cattle Company.

We just had an impeccable meal at Santa Fe cattle company, in Fort Payne each item on its own was fantastic!!. but even better than the food was our service by Miss Nikki Kane, who was an excellent server and this is coming from two veteran Las Vegas bartender and servers. when we are back in Fort Payne, we will definitely be back!

While staying in Ft Payne for a four day business trip, I ate at the Santa Fe Cattle Company twice for dinner. The first night I enjoyed the mozzarella sticks that were absolutely melt in your mouth perfect along with the Blackened Steak Salad. Such a great meal. On the second occasion I had surf and turf combo pick two with steak and shrimp. Both meals were excellent. As I was solo dining I sat at the bar and enjoyed great service on both occasions. This will definitely make it into my new rotation once I am in the area full time.

We’ve eaten here many many times. But our most recent visit was hands down one of the best experiences! Our waitress Mandy Jones was exceptionally fantastic. She never let our drinks run dry, was very attentive when we needed something & just all around pleasant. She never once treated us as if we were just another table. She wasn’t rushed with her service & made pleasant conversation with us. She was one of the best servers we’ve had in a long time. Food was perfection & came out in a timely manner. Whether you're craving fair trade organic coffee, frozen blended drinks, or scrumptious Panini sandwiches, The Spot has something for everyone.
Nice old world atmosphere and can seat plenty people. Medium roast brew and mocha, plain avacado toast and loaded avacado with egg substituted instead of bacon. Brew with milk and ocha are pretty good and little open faced breakfast is good as well.

Friendly folks serving great coffee in an environment that is steeped in history and harkens back to a time when such shops where cornerstones of culture. The coffee was freshly ground and prepared on an excellent espresso machine with a fresh shot and perfectly steamed milk for a cappacino. The strawberry rhubarb muffin was fresh and tasty as well. Excellent.

Nestled conveniently in downtown Fort Payne, Jeffersons is a delightful eatery that captures the essence of American comfort food. This vibrant restaurant, located just off the interstate and next to Taco Bell, specializes in mouthwatering chicken wings, juicy burgers, and fresh oysters. With an extensive menu that caters to diverse palates, there's truly something for everyone at Jeffersons. The atmosphere here is perfect for sports enthusiasts; large TVs adorn the walls showcasing live games while you enjoy a cozy pub vibe.
Oh my goodness, I discovered this little gem on a trip to Louisiana from Ohio. I saw the sign and stopped. I was tired from driving and very hungry. I saw the fried pickles sign on the door as I walked in and knew I was gonna order some. Being from southern Ohio, we have fried pickles, but the ones in the south I have found to be so much better. As we walked up to the counter to be seated, we were greeted with a warm, friendly smile and asked, "Seating for two?". I had explained that we were not from there and was traveling through and wanted to know what was the best thing on the menu to order. The girl replied with fried pickles and wings, and anything could be double dipped. I was already sold on the pickles, so we took our seats and ordered our drinks. The waitress came back with a basket of the pickles and told us it was free Friday fried pickles. I was over the moon excited. They were absolutely delicious 😋. We ordered burgers and small boneless wings with the sauce on the side (we had gotten to different sauces to try). Everything was absolutely amazing, but it was so much food that we had to get go boxes. Y'all check this place out. You won't be disappointed! Service was very friendly, very fast, and the food is over the moon exceptional!

Edit: heard from the "owner" and he was as rude as the staff. So go at your own risk. We love this location in Fort Payne and go multiple times and week. We enjoy bingo on Tuesdays and always have at least a group of 6. But last night the bartender (who said she was the manager) was rude and combative. She angrily told the restaurant that "if you didn't hear the bingo numbers called then it is your fault". She is correct, of course, but we are normally having a good time, laughing and egging each other, congratulating each other when someone wins. And the bingo caller was not repeating the numbers continuously. She did it some times but she started calling the numbers very fast and not repeating them. The bartender stating the obvious as if a riot was about to start was unnecessary. She seems to be on a power trip. I asked for her managers number and she gave me a GM's number, which I presume is likely a coworkers number. I don't believe Jeffersons has a GM, just an owner. I will call the number and talk to the person but I don't have any hope that the bartender will be talked to. I and all the other bingo patrons deserve an apology from her rude self next Tuesday. If a riot starts I will be right there with her holding it down but we are a croud of middle aged, overweight, balding Fort Payne residents and we are not likely to start a riot of any sort. We are just having a good time with our friends. We stopped going to Limons for bingo because we enjoyed Jeffersons so much. Please do not let your one terrible employee ruin that for us all. The server last night, Faith, was also terrible. She took our order and hid in the kitchen the rest of the night. I cleared our table and another woman got our to go containers. Not the best experience last night. Do better Jeffersons!
Tundra G — Google review
We came here last night. We arrived right at 10:30 and they didn't close until 11pm. We were told they had turned off the grill so we could only order fried food. The manager made our waitress bring our food to us in to go containers in bags. The chicken wings had zero seasoning on them. Management walked past our table several times and never spoke. The only bright spot was our waitress. She was very kind. The manager definitely didn't do her any favors making her bring out our food that way.

Ski & Snowboard Areas
Cloudmont Ski & Golf Resort is a sprawling mountaintop destination covering 800 acres, offering year-round cabin and chalet rentals. Despite primarily relying on machine-made snow, it remains an excellent spot for beginners and intermediate skiers to learn and enjoy winter sports in a sunnier climate. The resort's affordability makes it an ideal place to try skiing for the first time without breaking the bank.
I went there recently to see the ski area. They have been closed 5 years but wanted to open for a few weeks. They were going to close after the MLK holiday but they had enough cold weather to remain open longer. They make the snow and their equipment is old but they do well with what they have. They have a groomer and it is old too but the slope was in good condition. The slope is not very long, maybe 250 yards and would be a green with the upper part a little steeper and perfect for beginners and intermediate skiers. The slope is serviced by a rope tow and it was working smoothly with skiers getting on and off easily. The rental area looked like there were plenty of skies but they said some of their boot sizes were limited. The price for skiing is very reasonable with rental and lift ticket about $35 to $45 for children and adults and you can ski 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. They also have night skiing on weekends and during the week from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm. They also had a food truck and I had a BBQ sandwich which was excellent. They also had other food items and drinks. If I had my boots and if I had gotten there earlier I would have skied. I don't think they will reopen this year unless there is a long period of cold temperatures but I look forward to next year.

A great day. I've wanted to ski 'Bama for years. My family had a fun day. We only skied for a couple hours but it was so worth it. The lodge, parking, snowmaking, and lift service wasn't like Appalachian Ski Mountain or Deer Valley, but it was all that was expected and all we could ask for. The people running the resort were so kind and genuine.

This is a SMALL hill with only a tow rope. They only allow skiing/snowboarding, no tubing. This place is small, but steep enough to get you hurt. They do rent skis and snowboards but beware, they are all used, secondhand equip, they do not rent helmets. They also give lessons but I’m not sure how good those are. THEY DO NOT ALWAYS HAVE INTERNET, BRING CASH. BRING A HELMET, I don’t care if it’s a bicycle helmet, I watched at least 2 ppl get concussions on this hill and that was bc they slipped, however if a full grown adult runs into, you’re gonna need one. WARNING: The MAJORITY of the ppl out there HAVE NEVER BEEN ON A SKI HILL. The biggest danger to that is they don’t know how to stop. That means the likelihood of someone hitting you is high. If you are one of those who have never been on a ski hill - you are responsible for anyone in front of you, as in, don’t run them over, learn how to stop before going to the top, you’re a danger to anyone below you until then, and watch an etiquette video before you go, bc the amount of rude kids I encountered was unreal.

Sallie Howard Memorial Baptist Church, located at the peak of Lookout Mountain, was constructed by Colonel Milford Howard in memory of his wife. The chapel's rustic and tranquil ambiance is accentuated by its simple wooden pews and a natural rock formation behind the altar. Locals affectionately refer to it as "the church with a rock in it." Visitors are drawn to its unique charm and serene atmosphere.
This was definitely worth stopping to see. The Church was open when we arrived and it was a very pleasant visit. The feeling you get inside the church, it was peaceful and serene. We walked the grounds and visited inside the church.

Museum
The Fort Payne Hosiery Museum is a small, free museum located in a historic downtown storefront next to Hunt Hall. It showcases the history of Fort Payne as the Sock Capital of the World. Although it's not as large as the Smithsonian, it offers an interesting look at the town's hosiery industry and can be explored in about 15-20 minutes. It's definitely a unique experience that adds some 'socks appeal' to your visit to Fort Payne.
This is not a Smithsonian...it's a small, free museum that is almost an extension of the main museum across the street. You can see everything in about 15-20 minutes, but it's interesting enough. Seriously, how many of you can say you've been to a hosiery museum? I didn't think so. At least I can honestly say this museum has a lot of socks appeal.

This was a small little museum dedicated to the hosiery industry in Fort Payne. It mostly features the different machines used to create various socks from different time periods. The lady who was working when we were there was able to give us plenty of information about the industry. It is also attached to the opera house and tours can be requested.

With its warm atmosphere and spacious arena, this motel provides entertainment for all guests.
My family and I had a nice night. The price for a two bed was $60 plus tax, a great price considering how close we were to Turner Falls. When we visit Turner Falls again we will be staying in this motel.

BEWARE!! Do not stay here! The people that run this place are incredibly rude & hateful. I paid $72 w taxes to stay here & checked in at 2am. I was initially told i had to go check out at 11am then it changed to 1030am. I asked for a late checkout, specifically to stay until 12 or 1, bc the place was basically empty & i was hoping to get some sleep in before i had to travel again. I was told that i could stay until then for $50, basically the cost of staying another day, & she acted like that was kind & reasonable. It was not. Every other place i've stayed allowed u to do a late check out free of charge. I was rudely kicked out at 1020. Save ur money & drive a bit into this horrible town & stay at the days inn for a lower price!
Sam B — Google review
For $55, if you arent extra then this is a fine place to stay. The pros: it's $55, two full beds, good climate control, a wide shower TV, Internet. And Cable. The cons: the mattresses are relatively thin, maybe a 5in mattress at one time that is now a 3in mattress. There is no coffee pot. Even if they didn't I clue coffee, the pot should be. There was no deadbolt lock on my room door. If it wasn't for the lack of a dead bolt and coffee pot, I'd rate this a 5 star simply when considering how affordable it is. There isn't even much of an issue with noise being off a highway.

Golf course
DeSoto Golf Club is the oldest course in Dekalb County and is conveniently located near the city center. It's a nine-hole course that has recently been well-maintained under new management, with receptive greens and a layout that challenges players to keep their shots in play due to the tree-lined fairways. Despite some occasional issues with drainage, it offers a good value for playing golf. Additionally, visitors can enjoy great food at reasonable prices at the on-site grill.
Got a Family Swimming Pass Club Membership last year "BEST" money ever spent.. Me and my grandbabies had a wonderful time !!! THANK YOU...Hope to make it this year too.... ♡♡♡♡♡
Christa R — Google review
Fun nine hole course that reminded me of the courses I grew up playing. For being closed a year, the course was in great shape. Greens were receptive and I know it will only keep improving under the new management. The course is setup to make you hit a lot of shots and its important to keep it in play with all the trees that line the fairways. I certainly recommend getting out and supporting your local public courses. Excited to keep playing there on my trips to Fort Payne!
Nathan W — Google review
Some how the 1st fairway is flooded after 3 days of nothing but sunny and 70, hazards aren’t labeled so expect your shoes and socks to get soaked. Didn’t even bothering asking for a refund or rain check on the other 9 holes I paid for, I didn’t even make it past hole 5 because the course is managed so bad compared to how the promote it on facebook
Ryan P — Google review
A great local course to get 9 holes in. The greens can be spotty at times. During the rainy season, there are a few areas with poor drainage, but overall a good course to play and it is very reasonably priced. Update: The grill is fantastic! Great food at reasonable prices. Definitely recommend.

DeSoto Falls is a stunning waterfall located on the West Fork of the Little River in Alabama. It's named after the Spanish explorer, Fernando de Soto. The falls are part of DeSoto State Park, which offers various outdoor activities and is conveniently located near Fort Payne. While it may be difficult to see the waterfalls from the viewing area, many visitors recommend going down below for a better view.
These Falls are gorgeous. There is a machine to use your credit card to pay at the start of the trail to the overlook. Parking at trailheads fill up fast even first thing of a morning. The water looks so pretty. Beautiful spot to have a picnic.
Marcelle A — Google review
We stopped by for a quick look at the falls. It was a weekday and there was only a couple of people there at the time. We felt like we had the place all to ourselves. The falls are gorgeous and it is so peaceful out there.
Nikki A — Google review
The first time we went here it was the middle of Covid season and everyone in the whole world was trying to do outdoors stuff, because it was supposedly the only safe thing to do. So the parking lot was hopelessly jam-packed with people and even on-street parking with people parking in the ditch for a half mile back past the trail head parking!! So we could not see anything at all that first time which was a real shame because the falls were thundering so loud it was shaking the parking lot!! This time we went and it was barely a trickle by comparison inspite of raining for a solid week. Anyway this time was still a real treat. I only wish we had taken the time to grab a kayak and paddle out on the water for a little while. Their beach uses fake sand, but what can you expect I guess. Do be careful, there are rock cliffs you can fall off, and would likely die!! There is not much trail to see from the top of the falls, but you can wander around and get a few good shots and panoramics. However I highly recommend you spend the majority of your time on the trails that go from the trail head parking lot down the street. There are multiple trails, the bluff trail is good if you are not very athletic. But if you want a challenge then take the lower valley trail. The rocks on this trail are amazing!! On your way back, look for the cave trail detour and take that. You are gonna love the small cave you find. It actually has a BIG entrance, but does not go very far back. It does make for a nicely framed photo opportunity! Make sure you bring proper hiking boots if you are going to take these trails! The extra ankle support is a life saver!! There is some really interesting geology around here! Pay special attention to the content of the rocks!! This kind of rock can only form from mud flows, the kind that would be formed from a mega tsunami! Aka global flood!!

We wanted to explore the “Grand Canyon of the South” it did not disappoint. We drove around and had a blast stopping at so many beautiful places along the way. Finally stopping at Desoto Falls. Cindie D — Google review
Amazing place, short hike down but great wide area to swim. There’s not a lot of room on the bank for people so I’d pack light. Highly recommend bringing an inflatable float.
Jessica F — Google review
It's a nice, calm river. Not much parking is available, and the water is kind of muddy. It's more of a bring-your-dog type of river. I rented a Kayak for an hour, and it was peaceful, but there is not much more to this river.
OBBY L — Google review
A very beautiful waterfall that is very accessible with a short walk! It is one of the most approachable falls.
Gary P — Google review
We just had a good snowfall a couple of days earlier so why not visit DeSoto Falls to see what snow was left there and we weren't disappointed. Lots of snow melt had the falls thundering with icicles on the canyon walls and some snow left on the rocks around it. So glad we took the 1 hour drive south from where we live, to enjoy the sunshine of an cold winters day!

On Tuesday Sept 28 we went to Fort Payne to see the Alabama museum. After our tour we rode up to town and went to the park. We walked downtown looking for a place to eat and someone recommended The Strand. We walked in to a pleasant surprise. We found it charming and whimsical. Me met a friendly man named Heath. He told us about the specials and what was good. My sister and I both ordered the burgers. As we waited for for our food we chatted with Heath who talked to us told us stories and gave us Alabama fans some inside information. He told us stories about the band and just all round friendly. Our burgers came out hot and fresh and the onion rings were big enough to use as a bracelet. The tea was perfect and we enjoyed our meal as we chatted with others in the restaurant! If we ever make it back to Fort Paine we will be back again! Thanks to Heath and his son Colt it made our day a pleasant experience.
Becky W — Google review
It's an interesting little antique shop, with a little kitchen in the back. They were very nice folks. The onion rings were good, and ! ENORMOUS !, but the Bonanza Burgers were not up to what we were expecting from the indications from other reviews - they were dry, a little over-done, and the flavor was not that great. Maybe it was just a bad day for the cook, but I feel like they need to put some effort into restoring this family recipe.
Mat C — Google review
Burger pretty darn good, onion rings were awesome! Tea and Dr pepper were good also. That is pretty important to us at a restaurant. But talking to the owner was very cool. He gave me a little history lesson on the building and the town of Ft. Payne. I thank him for that!

Great little place to eat. Family owned and run with very consistent quality. They do Ribeye steaks on Fridays and they are the best steak in the Fort Payne area. They also make the old, original Jacks burger that will many will recall as a great burger from way back. And give the baby bakers a try. They are a small whole potato that goes great with steak or the catfish dinner.

Great family owned business! Open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Excellent hand cut steaks and other entrees. Tasty burgers. Try the Bananza Burger if you are hungry. Several great sides. The freshly battered onion rings are fantastic. Service is alway friendly and attentive. We eat here 2 or 3 times a month. Go here!

Restaurant
If you're a fan of Italian cuisine, Fontana's Restaurant is an absolute must-visit when in Fort Payne. This charming eatery specializes in crafting mouthwatering Italian dishes using fresh, locally sourced ingredients that truly elevate the dining experience. The ambiance transports you straight to Italy, making every meal feel special. Even if you're just passing through town after a long day of hiking, stopping by Fontana's for dinner is a decision you won't regret.
What a great little find!!! My hubby and I were visiting Fort Payne and looking for a local place to eat. I had the pecan crusted salmon with green beans and a slice of their house toasted bread. My hubby had the grilled chicken Alfredo with toasted bread. My salmon was crispy on the outside and tender and flavorful. Salmon is often dry, if not cooked correctly, and this was far from it. The garlicky green beans were delicious as well. The hubby’s meal was generously covered in Alfredo with lots of grilled chicken. If we visit Fort Payne again, we will definitely return to Fontana’s.
Victoria R — Google review
We found this place through the Maps app, fairly high rating, as we were driving in the Little River Canyon area. It's a tiny little bistro on a corner of the "downtown" area offering a small selection of Italian and Greek dishes and a handful of sandwiches along with several dessets. Doesn't look like much from the outside and only offers about a dozen tables inside, but don't be fooled, the food is pretty delicious. We had the cheese planks appetizer, excellent, lightly fried, perfectly melted and panko breaded mozzarella sticks. We also each chose an Italian dinner entree that came with Caesar side salad - delicious dressing and lightly crisp croutons; and a piece of grilled Italian bread that managed to be both perfectly crispy outside and hot, soft center on a positive slab of buttery goodness . Very tasty. I finished it off with the molten lava cake which was a bit too much for me, definitely enough to share. Chocolate lava cake with a magic-shell-chocolate-covered scoop of vanilla ice cream topped with chocolate-syrup-drizzled whip cream and a cherry. (I would suggest to the management that they heat the cake a little longer though, while still good, the lava center was not fully melted and was more the consistency of very thick pudding or custard and did not run at all, I actually had to kind of dig for the "lava center" which meant the cake was kind of dry since the ice cream was also enrobed so didn't melt into the cake either.) The bathroom is a little bit of a creepy walk. Through a dark door under a red exit sign, down a dim hallway that turns a blind corner to more, but better lit, hallway where the desperately-in-need-of-a-remodel bathroom lurks at the very end left, that while it did boast a horribly peeling toilet seat and the floor was a hot chipped mess, was at least pretty clean and very well stocked. Overall, would definitely visit again. The food was worth it, it was pretty clean though a bit age-worn around the edges, the prices are in line with a quaint Italian restaurant, which it definitely nails with the hand painted walls of winter trees against a mountain backdrop (very lovely), softly lit with string LED's and tables separated by folding slatted doors to offer the illusion of partial seclusion from other diners. Definitely check it out if you're in the area.

The service was incredible. The food is such a delight. Their menu is loaded with tons of Greco-Italian food. They have Italian meatballs with a Greco spin to them which is incredible. My wife and I always go here on date nights because it's all so good. I got the Cowboy calzone. And Italian meatballs with honey barbecue appetizer. The wife got spinach artichoke dip appetizer and the spanakopita dinner. We shared the molten lava cake at the end. So so good.

We are not local but decided to give Fontana’s a try since we were in town and ready for dinner after a strenuous hike. Great decision! Although the wait time can be long, you are advised on the menu and our waitress made sure we were aware. It was worth the wait! I also appreciated how they brought us both our hot and fresh food at the same time even though mine was probably done sooner. They are incredibly under-staffed due to the pandemic but provided excellent service in a timely manner. We were seated in an area out of sight of our waitress but she did not forget us. The cheese in my dish was amazing and probably some of the best I’ve had. I would highly suggest the fried Oreos as dessert! I ordered mine to-go and I was very pleasantly surprised. I’ve never had it, but now it’s a favorite and I’ll definitely get more next time we are in town. Do keep in mind this is a very old building and does smell like one. Everything was very clean and each table was thoroughly cleaned. Overall a very nice experience! We definitely recommend it and look forward to visiting again.

I don’t like to leave a negative review but things are worth mentioning. I ordered the Pad Thai and I’ve had Pad Thai in so many places but this one was extra fishy and also kinda flavorless at the same time. I kinda stated the fact that the noodles were also under cooked. The waitress took my plate and asked what I wanted instead. She then returned and said they would not swap it out. So unfortunately because I hate letting food go to waste and because I didn’t want to pay twice, I asked for some curry paste to try and help the flavor. I didn’t help much and then I had the runs for the next 24 hours.

If you enjoy a tempura or fried roll then you would love the Shrimp Tempura roll. If you like your tempura or fried roll loaded on top with extras and a sweet sauce, then the Toke roll will make your day. I thought the Cowboy roll was just ok, and the Spicy Tuna was good; however, both were overshadowed by the Toke roll!

Our family visited this place for quite a few meals when we first moved to the area 8 years ago and we really enjoyed the food. Then we ate here for the last time after experiencing the chicken they were serving was different and very nasty. So rewind 8 years later we decided to give it another try. My husband and son and daughter ordered the hibachi filet and chicken. I ordered the Thai curry chicken. We all agreed the meat was weird looking especially my curry chicken, and texturally off. The filet tasted like the way canned dog food smells. I picked out my chicken and only ate the vnot cooked broccoli and rice. Thank God the rice was edible because that's all anyone really ate. The spring rolls I also ordered were cold and mushy in the middle and hot on the outside, that tells me they have a Chef Mike (aka microwave) working for them in the back. I truly do not understand how anyone with any taste buds can rate this place at anymore than 1 star for their hibachi with chicken and filet. We did not try the sushi maybe it's better but I highly doubt it. WILL NOT BE BACK EVER AGAIN!!!!!!! The quality of their food is bottom of the trash can!!!! What a shame ☹️😱🥺

I come here often but I think I will start going to the other Japanese restaurant in town because this place has started charging for a sauce with a dinner or lunch entree! It should include 1 sauce per entree! I can't stand being nickled and dimed, especially when I have been coming here for years and given you plenty of business!

I've only been at this location a few times so far, but it has always been a positive experience. Both the inside and outside are clean. And I love the way the inside looks. It is about an hour and half to two hours from Chattanooga depending on if you take the interstate or back roads. Me and my dog went on Saturday, there is a trail you can take it will lead to a swimming area at the bottom. Be careful the last bit to get to the water is very steep and on the way back up it is strenuous. Wear good shoes there are many rocks on the trail. There is also a overlook to see the waterfall, super beautiful. Also it's very busy during the summer time.

You visit the Little River Falls first either by driving or hiking. We drove to a big parking lot. The views to the falls were spectacular. Then you do a scenic drive to overlooks that snakes along the canyon. Be careful follow your instincts and stay on highway 176 it’s very easy to get lost on one of the county roads as we did. There’s small parking on the overlooks. The Mushroom rock is interesting. The so called Grace’s Falls suppose to be the highest in Alabama is seasonal and depends on the rain. It was a trickle when we visited. This one is also very easy to miss be on alert and look for the posted sign.” There’s no fee except if you visit the mouth of the river it’s $15.00 but it’s free if you have the annual pass.

The most fun you can have for free. Big parking lot and two seater no flush toilets. The waterfall is totally serene and it's said you can see a rainbow 🌈 around noon when it's misting. There are a few harrowing trails that can be hiked and an awesome overlook aside from the main lookout. RV and dog friendly 🐕

Beautiful area to view falls. There is a paved path that a wheelchair could go down, or you can use the stairs to the main viewing area. There is a paved walkway to view the falls and a short path over to a better view. The area is relatively shady, and there is plenty of parking. You can also take a short trail down to the river and folks played in the water above the falls (Note-there is some distance to the falls from this area, but the are dangerous falls and you should use caution-the rangers do not recommend playing here bit lots of people seem to enjoy this area). You can get another view from the bridge of the Falls by walking on the sidewalk along the main road from the bridge.

🌊✨ Did you know Little River Canyon is called the “Grand Canyon of the East”? 🏞️ This hidden gem in Alabama is carved out by one of the cleanest, free-flowing rivers in the South! 💧💚 From twisted 🌳 tree roots, rugged 🪨 rocks, cascading 💦 waterfalls, fluttering 🦋 butterflies, to all kinds of amazing 🐿️ wildlife—there’s beauty everywhere you turn.

Visited this along with DeSoto today, both are great places to visit! Canyon lets you walk to the falls, those going to the top flat rocks must bypass the boardwalk railings. I checked out the rocky trail nearby that leads to a swimming and fishing area at the bottom of several stone steps, my kind of trail with roots, rocks, and flat boulders, slightly moderate at most. There are several awesome overlooks along the paved scenic road, plus mushroom rock in between the car lanes is an interesting surprise. Great day trip that would make a weekend trip as well!

Little River RV Park & Campground offers a genuine camping experience in a great location. While it may not have all the amenities of a KOA, it provides friendly service and spacious spots for big rigs. The park is centrally located near downtown and various dining, shopping, and adventure options. The cleanliness of the park is exceptional, complementing the beautiful surroundings. Guests appreciate the availability of firewood and ice on-site as well as the proximity to Little River Falls and DeSoto Falls.
Great camp ground with showers and bathrooms. Love the camp ground vibe. Met a local that lives on the campground, he's very helpful and has lots of hiking advice and will tell you anything you need to know. Shout out to Mark for answering the phone and getting us the RV spot, very nice guy. And Mike for being a helpful local.

Very nice campground and friendly/helpful staff. Was very easy to book online, check in, check out. Was very impressed with the cleanliness of the bath house (men's side). Thank you. Hope to be back up there in the near future. Maybe the springtime if I'm lucky.

Beautiful place in Alabama. The campground is very well kept. Clean bath house/restrooms. Staff is extremely friendly. Nice small req center for kids. Small little pond to get a hook wet. Nothing to brag about on the amount of fish or size of pond. All in all I definitely recommend.

It looks like the campground is under new ownership. They are doing a great job of making improvements. As with most older campgrounds, there are many permanent campers. Some very run down, cluttered sites. The first group of sites closest to the office appear to be new. The landscaping is beautiful. This is the first campground I've been at with extremely good wifi. I plan to return and support the new owners. Their biggest challenge will be to clean up or remove some rvs.

I chose Little River Campground for a quick 2 night stay near DeSoto and Little River Canyon. Booking with them was much easier last-minute than trying to book with DeSoto State Park. The campground manager was very prompt and helpful with my reservation and kindly suggested a site near the entrance. It was a great size for my camper, partially shaded (which was perfect), and had plenty of space. I was very pleased with the actual campsite. The facilities were also nice, and the distance to Little River Canyon was very close. That said, as a solo female camper, I did not always feel comfortable. This campground has recently been purchased by a new owner, and while improvements are being made, there are still concerns. It appears that some individuals live here full-time, and there aren’t many regulations regarding appearances. Most long-term residents kept to themselves, but one was overly persistent in conversation, asking questions that made me feel uneasy even after I gave hints that I wanted to be left alone. While there were no direct threats, the atmosphere left my safety feeling questionable. I would not have felt comfortable there with my children. If you’re looking for a long-term spot, this may be a fine choice. But if you’re traveling through, vacationing, or especially if you’re a solo female camper, you may feel more at ease at DeSoto or another state park. From a business perspective, it feels as though the new owner is trying to weave together two different models—long-term residency and short-term vacation camping. Perhaps he is transitioning, or perhaps trying to merge both. I'm sure this will only improve over time as it appears the new owner and management are attempting to turn this campground into a positive experience.

The current management began ownership in November 2024. They have be adding and renovating their amenities since. We are an RV group that traveled there with 9 rigs. Mark and Samir were very helpful and worked with us to make our stay enjoyable. When we were about to leave they asked for suggestions to make the park a better destination. Note: this is an RV campground, not a hotel. Little River Canyon national Preserve is 2 miles away. It is close to eclectic Mentone and Fort Payne.

Start at the Little River Canyon Center, and you'll save yourself some time. 4322 Little River Trail #100 is the address of the center. We started our tour south of the park and saw a bunch of stuff we could've skipped. I thought the road next to the river would give us great views, but the river was hidden by bushes and young trees.

This fall is so beautiful! Although my daughter and I were unable to figure out how others were able to walk on the top of the waterfall, we adored it from afar. Science Tip: When taking pictures from afar, if you have a view finder that you are able to look through and have a phone with a camera on it, try this! Place your camera on one (hole on either side) of the view finder. If you hold it just right, you are able to capture a picture of the object up closer! This also works with telescopes, microscopes, etc. See my pictures for the difference! (Only the first few starting from the Scenic Waterfall are with the view finder.) From the beginning of this road is a 12 mile drive of stopping areas for scenic views. There are hiking areas as well. I would highly recommend an SUV or truck. A vehicle that sits higher off the ground in order to park along the 12 mile road. Otherwise, your vehicle will bottom out! (You are in the mountains ⛰️ !)

It's such a very beautiful place. The waterfall is incredible as well at the rock formations and nature itself. It can get a little crowded, especially in the summer, when a lot of people go here to swim. Make sure you bring plenty of water and stay hydrated!

We happened to pick a great sunshiny/very clear day to take a little trip over to northeast Alabama and view this incredible river canyon and waterfalls. A lot of my posts photos depend on good weather conditions and sometimes its hit or miss depending on what time of day I leave to drive to these destinations alone with cloud/sunny wind speeds. This time it was perfect! Enjoy!

Little Falls, located in DeKalb County, is a hidden wonder that boasts the stunning Little River Canyon and the picturesque Marthas Falls. The emerald pool known as the Hippie Hole offers a refreshing spot for sunbathing and wading. The hike down to the water is not for the faint of heart but rewards visitors with beautiful scenery along a well-laid out path.
This place is better known as “Hippie Hole”. This is a very fun and exciting swimming hole here in the beautiful mountains of northeast Alabama. There’s three different levels of rocks you can jump off of into the water, there’s a 10 foot, 20 foot, and 45 foot jump. Plenty of space to sunbathe on the rocks and swim around. Weekends get super crowded. Game wardens patrol the area so don’t even think about bringing a cooler full of drinks. Be safe and be smart and enjoy this amazing place!
Josh S — Google review
The really big waterfall was at the beginning on a very nice manufactured trail, the swimming hole is about a 20-30 minute hike down a trail. It was a moderately easy hike, but the very steep “stairs” at the end of the trail made the hike way more difficult. The path starts out smooth with dirt and a few tree stumps, but quickly turns into big rocks that you have to step on. The views were completely worth it though, we will absolutely be going back. It just wasn’t as easy of a trail as we were expecting it to be.
Elyse H — Google review
AKA, the Hippie Hole. It's a great place to cool down on a Summer day. Chill in one of the calmer pools above the falls or take a jump into the deeper waters below it. If youre feeling more adventurous, you can also go "boulder hopping". There's something for any age here. The original parking location is now closed off. Instead you have to park at the lookout and take a 0.6 mile trail to get here. Right before you get there, the trail has a steep decline, but is pretty manageable since there are now man-made stone steps for assistance. Just remember you now have to walk back up!
Adam B — Google review
Super cool place to go with your friends and family. It has an area to dive and swim for people who really knows how to do it and another place more shallower for the little ones. Is not such a good place for kids but for teenagers and above full! 💯

What a great place to get out and stretch your legs! The parking lot to the falls themselves is a short, easy walk on a developed trail. Three generations from 3 years to 73 years enjoyed our outing. The falls are beautiful and the railing solid at the overlook. There was a longer, natural trail down to the lower falls. This was more challenging for the very young and very old ends of our group.

Currently behind one of their trucks on I20 just over the South Carolina border from Georgia. My husband and I have watched the truck (#625, High Cotton Transport) drive erratically and weave in and out of traffic at high rates of speed. Vehicle is not being operated in a safe manner. I would have attempted to send this via email, but their website link opens to their DOT record of 7 incidents in the last 24 months that included 1 fatality, 2 injuries and 4 tows. Hopefully this company will see this review and pull the driver in for training.

The Boom Days Heritage Celebration in Fort Payne is an annual festival held in September that honors the town's history and culture. The event features a diverse range of activities including live music performances, art displays, and a classic car show. Additionally, visitors can enjoy a variety of food vendors offering different culinary delights. While some attendees found the music enjoyable and appreciated the free admission, there were suggestions for improvement in terms of vendor variety and uniqueness to enhance the overall experience.
So cool that this quaint small town does as much for it's inhabitants & surrounding patrons. Music wasn't great but fun and even free. That's truly awesome. Lots of vendors. That's great. But, where the event needs major work is quality & VARIETY of vendors. Too much all the same. Not unique. Not much art. Each booth kind of just like the last one. I won't tell you what my friend called it but she summed it up perfectly, and I've heard at least 5 other people express same, seperately. So, it's not just me. The event needs to find a way to attract better variety & talent. So many gifted creatives in this area. Why only the most similar, mostly mediocre ones participating in Boom Days. ? It's a mystery. Fixing that one thing would make the event 5 stars beyond.

My husband loved his experience and learned so much. Everyone was accommodating and answered all our questions. Wished he wouldn't had talked so much at check in and could've got a 3rd repell in since it was only 2 people that day. Nonetheless he had a great time. I paid an additional $15 (walker fee) to drive him to spot (we followed our guide) and stand on a cliff and take pictures/videos in a public area. I guess it's a small price to pay for all the knowledge and experience he got. The guides did answer any of my questions as well and I felt included even though I didn't repell. Can't wait to take hubby back for a class.

I had some time to kill on a February weekend while working in Huntsville so I reserved a time to do some rappelling with True Adventure Sports. I was not disappointed. Isiah and Junior were very knowledgeable and professional. Prior to arriving to the rappelling site (which was a short drive from the business) they stopped at an overlook for a view of the canyon and discussed some of the local edible plants which was very interesting. At the rappelling site I was able to get three rappels down an 80+ foot cliff. They were very professional on their procedures and you can tell that their first priority was safety. Afterwards they provided me with local areas of interest to check out while I was in the area. I definitely enjoyed my time there and thought it was reasonable for the price. I would use their services again if I ever return to the area.

Israel and his team are incredibly skilled, knowledgeable, genuine and personable! My 8 yr old daughter came with us both times. They made everyone, especially our daughter feel truly special! She’s already looking forward to when we come back next year!! As are we!!

No complaints here, absolutely worth it! My family and I went on the rock climbing adventure and it was absolutely amazing! We had four guides with us (Abigail, Franky, Emmy, and Kim), and they were fantastic. Very fun to be around, but also very professional, attentive, encouraging, and knowledgeable. They were especially great with the three young kids (9, 7, and 5) who had never rock climbed before and were nervous. Definitely recommend going, and we'll be going back ourselves.

Amazing experiencing with TAS crew. We rappelled in Little River Canyon with them. It was our first time ever rappelling (my 9 year old daughter did this as well.) For starters, the location was absolutely beautiful. The staff were so knowledgeable, provided each of us with individual instruction, and I felt safe and secure with them the entire time. This experience was by far the best activity I did while in that area. I highly recommend this place! We loved the staff who made this our best adventure yet.

Didn't have swings but other than that it was fun for my kids

A great little quiet and somewhat secluded park with shaded seating near a small creek that is very relaxing. Overall it was well maintained, had public restrooms and was not busy. As we were leaving the parks and rec staff pulled up to pick up to pick up some litter and check the trash levels, which was nice to see them being proactive.

Stopped by for a few minutes and seen a whole family of squirrels. Took a few pics while I was there

Hawkins Spring Park is my kids favorite in Fort Payne. It has restrooms that are clean and stocked. The fence is wonderful and gives me the security to actually sit down occasionally without the worry of having to chase a child so they don't wander into the parking lot or road. There is always a shaded area no matter what time of day. Thank you to FP City for keeping this park clean and enjoyable.

It's a peaceful place to go. You can take kids to play or just sit there

It was fine. Wish the bathroom doors were unlocked during daylight hours so if your kids need to use the bathroom you dont have to leave the park and drive into town though.
