My friend and I hiked both the upper and lower falls. We went to the different parking lots and didn’t walk from one to the other. (Although we found out there is a shuttle so you can hike the 4 miles and get a ride back.) The boardwalks are nice and allow for a safe stroll. The steps to the bottom are also safe and sturdy. The falls are impressive and it was a nice excursion. And it wasn’t crowded which was nice.
This was our first trip in the UP and we heard and read so many great things about this park and it lived up to the hype. This is a beautifully maintained park. The pathways are free of debris and easy to walk. This is coming from two people who didn't think they'd be able to walk the whole Lower Falls, let alone the Upper Falls too. The Lower Falls is about a 2-mile walk in total. The Upper Falls felt a little less than that. We had a gorgeous day to walk these paths. I would recommend getting to either one of these fairly early as parking fills up. The lower falls seems to have more parking than the upper but once you get there, you'll be glad you went, especially if you love nature.
A beautifully relaxing space in nature. The state has done a phenomenal job of blending human access and convenience with nature. Easy access wooden walkways to the falls. Great spots to overlook the falls, rent and launch kayaks, or access swim spots on the river. The visitor center has lots of great shopping and snacks that help support the park. We are so glad we decided to veer off our original mapped road trip to add this park as a stop. Well worth the extra mileage and time. Plan on spending at least an hour if not more.
Beautiful park. The areas near the falls are easy to get to. The top falls has 181 steps down and back up if you want to view it from the Gorge, so be aware. We hiked the 4.5 miles from the bottom to the top falls. There are a lot of ups and downs, roots, soggy areas. If you are out of shape, I would avoid it and drive from the bottom falls to the top after visiting each. If you can hike it, it is beautiful. Round trip was 11 miles of walking. Be sure to plan for the 2.5 hours each way. I wouldn't want to do it in the dark. There is a private shuttle that can take you from one parking lot to the other, $ 20.00 for first person and $5.00 for others in your group. They have limited availability do read the signs and contact them. Gift shops are at the top and bottom falls.
We had a wonderful time hiking the trails and viewing all the different waterfalls. Many people think there are just two but the lower is actually made up of four and lots of cascades. Between the two different areas you should plan to spend 4 to 5 hours there. We would highly recommend spending part of a day here.
Awesome scenery! Short and easy walk to the waterfalls. Handicap friendly. They have food, beer, ice cream, restrooms, and a few shops. Something for everyone. I'm glad we made the 2.5 drive from Escanaba. It was a little busy when we went with the fall colors. You won't be disappointed.
This is an amazing space. Lots of waterfalls. Rocks can be super slick though. Almost fell myself and watched a number of others fall down. Looked painful. Be careful. Plenty of hiking available. You can wade ino the falls at various points. It feels great to feel the water rushing past your feet.
Beautiful spot, a must see, people from all over the country and the world were there today. Have to see the upper and lower (pst...the upper is best for all things.) I can't wait to go back after the construction on the upper bridge and restaurant area. Beautiful views.

I have been to the museum twice. I enjoyed it both times. The staff is always incredibly friendly which is a bonus. It's a gorgeous location as well. There is lots to read and learn and multiple artifacts. My personal favorite is seeing the inside of the lighthouse dwellings with their old time dishes and furniture, etcetera. There is also a nice deck overlooking lake Superior. They have a film you can watch on the Edmund Fitzgerald. Unfortunately I always tear up when I watch it but it is very interesting.
All in all a great place to visit, but it's probably not going to take you 3hrs to tour the grounds. Nice 20 minute video on the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, which i recommend you watch. Some really good points of interest, some things not so much. The drive is somewhat long and there is only one way in and one way out. The buildings are close so walking should not be an issue. You may encounter a large amount of mosquitos,so prepare for that. Great view of the sandy beach ship graveyard. There are a lot of interesting artifacts and stories in the buildings, so be ready to read a lot. Was not too crowded so much of reading should be in view. It's a pleasant visit but I'll let you be the judge 🤔
We lucked out on an early October weekend with temps in the 80's at Whitefish Point's Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum. One fee gets you into the museum, along with several other buildings on site. There is a wonderful gift shop which helps sustain the museum, so your $$ are well spent. Buildings are in wonderful condition, given that they sit right on Lake Superior's Whitefish Bay. They now offering a wonderful viewing deck of Lake Superior, which is totally accessible to all. You can still kick off your shoes, wander on the beach, and even dip your toes into Lake Superior. Parking is ample.
Great place, many buildings to explore, inside and out, but we only had 40 minutes. They charge $15 per person. All the staff in buildings 1, 3 were enthusiastic and helpful, but they were in a hurry to close up in buildings 2 & 4. Didn't get to go in anymore buildings. I recommend 3 hours. Then afterwards, you can explore the beach and wildlife nature preserve...make it a whole day visit.
This is a must visit if you're interested in the Great Lakes as well as the Legendary Edmund Fitzgerald. The displays were amazing and informative. Loved learning more about a few of the many shipwrecks of the Great Lakes. Plus everything else with the lighthouse and beach makes this worth the drive and price of admission.
Very informative and interesting attraction. You have a museum, living quarters of lighthouse keeper, 15 minute movie about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and a gift shop. There are two observation decks, one on the beach of lake Superior and one for bird watchers. Plenty of parking (free) and clean restrooms. Staff very friendly and there to answer your questions. FYI, if driving ensure you have full tank of gas as gas stations are far & few and gas cost about 30 to 50 cent more in the area. Minimal construction so expect delays during high traffic times. Definitely worth the visit. If you buy tickets inadvance there is virtually no WIFI to pull them up on your phone but they can use your name to pull up tickets you purchased on line. Tickets can be purchased on site as well
This has been on my bucket list for a long time, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! The day was over class, and there was light precipitation in the air, which seemed absolutely apropos for the solemnity of the history. The museum was laid out extremely well, artifacts were incredibleto view in the additional buildings on the grounds where incredibly interesting.
This was a wonderful experience. We were on our 15th anniversary vacation. You can go into different museums and walk down to the beach of Lake Superior. You get to learn about the Fitzgerald sinking, get to see how they lived, and learn about the Coast Guard from the day. Very interesting and fun place to visit. Don't forget to visit the gift shop!

It was the best sunset we had seen on Lake superior. The water temperature was pleasant, and the rocks along the shore were magnificent. We took beautiful pictures and it is the memorial location for the Edmond Fitzgerald. A phenomenal place to sit and enjoy the gentle breeze and sunset. We didn't make it to the museum but have heard wonderful things about it.
We visited on a Wednesday afternoon in July. The weather was much cooler (20* Fahrenheit lower) than St. Ignace. We were prepared with sweatshirts and jackets. The water was choppy and cold on the day we visited. The sand on the beach is fine, sugar sand. We did not need shoes on the beach or at the water’s edge. What rocks were washing up on shore were smooth and tumbled. There were several tidal pools on the shore when we arrived. Bring mosquito repellent! They are abundant, aggressive, and only slightly smaller than pheasants. 😂 Parking was plentiful, public restrooms were clean and well maintained, staff we encountered were knowledgeable and kind. Overall, a great place to see.
The lighthouse is in superb condition and the grounds well maintained. Parking is somewhat limited which may be a concern during peak travel times. There is a platform which allows a comfortable location to view the Lake Superior shore for those with mobility issues. If you are able to stroll, a walk along the shore is fantastic! We found an old wooden rudder (1880's) that had washed ashore. The shore has a sand art section where layers of sand, brown and black laid up by wave action, wash away leaving beautiful patterns. There are markers along the shore as you travel west of the light of three of the Fitzgerald's crew. We traveled here to remember the Edmund Fitzgerald's 50th Commemoration event. Unfortunately the museum was closed for the season. (May-Oct 31st) The ceremony was very solemn as family members rang a bell for each of the crew lost that fateful Nov 10, 1975. A marker for the Fitzgerald is located just past the lighthouse along the walkway to the viewing platform. Plenty of opportunity to watch a great lake freighters as they pass very near the point. This is a beautiful place to spend time!
Visited on 6.21.2025. Aside from getting devoured by nickel sized mosquitoes, I enjoyed the beach views of Lake Superior and the lighthouse. The Edmund Fitzgerald Memorial adds a unique emotional character to the area.
Over the years this place has become more of a tourist trap. It was a beautiful light house that seemed to be trapped in time. Over the years they have added tourist shops and started charging. You can see the beach and lighthouse for free but any of the museums or other things cost. Prices seemed a little steep to me for what it was but that is simply opinion. It is a beautiful area with a Amazing beach and very rich history.
Great museum, lovely grounds, epic beach. The fog rolled in while we were there and you could get a sense of what the ship captains have to navigate thru. Great bathrooms, lovely gift shop and expanded parking area. Will be back!
Was nice. Second trip here but this time the mosquitoes were so thick they would carry you away. So we ran into the gift shop for relief. Lots of cool items for sale and has a museum. Nice overlook of Lake Superior, but again, the mosquitoes were so bad we were outside less than 5 minutes.
An amazing museum and historical landmark that tastefully pays tribute to all those lost on the great inland seas we call the Great Lakes. A wonderful educational must see stop for all ages. This location may seem a bit out of the way but is 1000% percent worth the trip! Plenty of parking and the staff is amazing!

Beautiful day here ! Beware of the shuttle - it’s literally a minivan and fits six people today. So just an fyi if your trying to shuttle one way and there are already people waiting for it. No one mentioned this to us . Otherwise had a perfect day ! Lunch at brewery was delicious !
There are alot of stairs!!! Elderly and handicapped, please be fore warned. You either need a parks permit or purchase a day pass. I believe it was $11 per vehicle and was good for as many parks as you chose to visit, that day! Great views. But 1 section was closed for maintenance when we went. But was still very enjoyable and a workout all in one. And I even appreciated and applauded the effort put in to build the whole walk way setup. That would not be an east task! I believe it's also referred to as root beer falls because of the color of the water due to the minerals being leeched into the water from the trees.
Love it.. it's quite beautiful. Big change stair to the platform to the falls is closer so, you can't get that close. But, can't wait for the construction to be done for the new 1
The Park Service is currently building a wheelchair accessible platform at the base of the falls. I can't wait for it to be finished!
Beautiful tannin stained waterfall in Eastern UP. Easily accessible. Upper Falls and Lower Falls each have their own entrance off of 123, or you can hike the 5 miles one way and make a day of it. Each park has food, a gift shop and bathrooms; state park pass required and can be purchased at the gate. The lower falls allow you to get up close to explore, which is good and bad bc many social trails have developed on the island due to increased traffic. Definitely bring the bug spray or wear long sleeves/pants for the mosquitoes. Highly recommend a stop to explore these falls!
So beautiful! The trials were easy to walk and the area was very clean. The gift shop was super cute as well
My favorite place in the UP!!! All of these falls are so breathtaking and beautiful!! I love that they built the new bridge to cross at the lower falls!
It was an amazing experience. I was waiting just a little waterfall but when I saw it, I loved it. Just visit it you won’t be disappointed.

Very beautiful spot for experiencing tranquility. Definitely windy most of the times.
The feeling of looking over the lake and see the land of Canada is unique.
The beach is beautiful as well as Lake Superior! Bring mosquito spray in the summer!!
Beautiful spot! Nice little walk to get here and the views are spectacular. Nice place to bird watch or just relax as we did. We came in June and the only negative is the amount of flies that just land all over and bite you. I can only imagine what the sunset looks like from here!
Loved it here. So much to hear and see. Migratory birds from all over. You never know what will show up. Plovers of many kinds. Artic terns were here in last couple days. Very well laid out and card for.
Gorgeous spot for sunsets, bird watching, collecting rocks, or just relaxing. Lots of unique rocks and stones that you will not find anywhere else! There is a small boardwalk that leads from the parking area to the shore.
We had the opportunity to visit the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory in APR_FY2024 and it was an amazing experience. We did a plant tour and for sure it's a beautiful place, especially to visit on a hot summer day. The land around the Whitefish Point Bird Observatory is also remarkable, even a simple ride across the roads could be an unforgettable experience. Definitely, it's a place where we want back.
Truly one of the best birding sites in the US. Piping plovers were easily seen on the beach in the 3d week of May when I was there. I missed most of the spring owl surge but check their Facebook/internet sites for info on when they are owl banding and when you can see the owls get banded. Plenty of other great sites in the vicinity that are also must sees, The shipwreck museum across the street, Taquamenom falls, and Seney national wildlife refuge.
