Cape May Point State Park is a section of a very large nature conservancy that extends all the way to the Cape May City border an area approximately 2 1/2 to 3 miles east-west and nearly a mile north-south. The park sector is quite compact and has within it several notable sites, most famously the Cape May Lighthouse, a museum, and a number of nature observation areas. There is a shoreline walk and a historic World War 2 military battery. Walking trails continue eastward into the South Cape May Nature Conservancy. All told, one very nice educational experience.
The most beautiful place. It’s so peaceful with so much to do. I highly recommend booking the 2 hour birding tour. It was so cool to see so many birds with a great guide.
This is an amazing State Park in NJ. It has got a beach, lighthouse and trails. There is plenty of parking and restrooms also available. There is four sided tap too for cleaning your feet. The beach is a very close and it’s really beautiful as it is less crowded which makes a perfect spot for relaxed beach goers. For the lighthouse you need to get the tickets at the lighthouse. The trails are free and it has got some beautiful ponds and most of trail was flat and wooden. There is point in the trail where you can see the lighthouse for photography. Amazing place for spending a day.
Great trails and views of the lighthouse and beach/water. Well maintained and always something fun or educational for the kids. Many of the trails for bird watching are wheelchair and stroller accessible.
Nice easy bike ride from town. 199 step aerobic workout to get to the top, but lots of stops along the way with windows to look out of at teasing bits of the view. Great views from the top. Back on ground there are nature trails of various lengths around the area and beautiful beaches.
Any state park is nice and pretty, but Cape May Point State Park is outstanding. They offer a lot here. 1st of all, there is a very well taken care lighthouse which you climb for $12 per person. They have a rescue boat as an exhibition on the lighthouse premises. Huge free parking lot. Covered picnic area with several picnic tables. Cooking grills in front of picnic area. Birds houses, more like birds apartments in the parking lot. Free clean bathrooms. Visitor center. Mainly, free access to the beach, which is close to rare in New Jersey, but you can not swim there. There are no life guards That was absolutely fine with us. We weren't planning on swimming anyway. we just wanted to sit on the beach and enjoy the sounds of the crashing waves. Also, I believe there are walking trails in this park, but we didn't go there. Overall experience was great. If we are in Cape May, we'll probably pay another visit to the park. Highly recommend place to see. Cape May, New Jersey USA 🇺🇸
This was a really nice park. It's free to enter, and there's are a few different things to see and do. There's a historical lighthouse and a tower from World War 2. There are 3 miles of walking trails, a half mile of which (the red loop) is a boardwalk and is wheelchair accessible. The loop goes to 2 different lookouts over the pond. There is also a little 1 room museum (also free) where there are reptiles and amphibians and a bunch of different little bits of Cape May history. A lady working in the museum was the one who told me about the accessible trail, and I'm glad she did. The whole park was nice and clean and well kept. I hope to return someday.
A quieter, cooler, educational, and more peaceful area. - The nearby visitor center and museum are also informative, interesting, air conditioned and free, which was a nice break from other nearby areas. - There were signs for free Wifi. I did not try it. - Much of the yellow and red trails leading to the pond(s) were mostly or else entirely shaded — a very nice break from full sun during the warmer months. - The trails were decently maintained — no unexpected tree roots to trip on — and the boardwalks were very well maintained. I jogged these trails, but there were also walkers, some with dogs if I recall correctly. - Trail traffic was sparse even when the nearby beaches had plenty of traffic. This and May Meadows may be my favorite places in Cape May.

Amazing beach. So many rocks and shells. The gift shops are amazing. There is a ship wreck near and you can take fun photos. They have the viewing binoculars that you can pay a quarter and see. The one gift shop has a mini golf place. Go to the gift shop in the off season. Such a fun place. Great places to eat too.
We passed this beach by on the trolley while tiring around Cape May. The place is beautiful and seems very popular and liked by locals. The shop near the beach is so cute and it has so much beautiful stuff including famous Cape May diamonds. The staff is friendly and very knowledgeable. All in all, it’s a great place to stop by for a day at the beach with the family. We will definitely be back for more!
Maps didn't put my pictures in the order I chose them but you can see how beautiful the sunsets are! Not only are the sunsets beautiful at Sunset Beach, but you can also search for "Cape May Diamonds" in the sand. They are the pebbles that have become clear over time. You may want to grab a little something to eat before you go if you are planning to eat at the restaurant. My son wanted a little something and it would've been a 3 hr. wait! I have gone to Sunset Beach many times over the years and seen differing sunsets. My son's favorite was when we went to see the sunset, but there wasn't one because of a lightning storm further out in the ocean. It too was a beautiful part of nature to watch. He was wishing for a thunderstorm this last time we went!
I think the beach is slightly overrated. In the season so many people come to see the sunset that it's very difficult to find parking. The beach itself has rather course sand that looks a bit dirty. Nice view of the shipwreck.
Sunset Beach is a must-do during our beach vacations. Arrive early to experience the moving flag ceremony—it’s a highlight. The beach is especially beautiful during golden hour and perfect for family photos. There are also shops and food options nearby, adding to the charm. Parking can be a challenge. While there are a couple of small lots near the beach, they fill up quickly. We often end up parking on the street and walking.
Sunset Beach in Cape May isn't just a location; it's a daily spectacle that feels like a masterpiece painted by nature itself. As the sun begins its descent, the sky over the Delaware Bay transforms into a breathtaking canvas of fiery oranges, soft pinks, and deep purples. It's an east-coast rarity—a chance to watch the sun melt directly into the horizon over the water. But the magic here extends beyond the sunset itself. The beach is a treasure trove of unique charm. You can hunt for "Cape May diamonds," small, naturally polished quartz stones that gleam in the sand, or explore the hauntingly beautiful remains of the SS Atlantus, a concrete ship that ran aground nearly a century ago. These unique features add a layer of history and wonder to an already stunning scene. For a truly poignant experience, be sure to catch the evening flag ceremony, a heartfelt tradition that honors veterans as the day comes to a close. Sunset Beach is a place for reflection, for connection, and for witnessing one of the most stunning natural performances the Jersey Shore has to offer. It's a must-see for anyone who wants to experience the sublime beauty of a Cape May sunset.
Beautiful beach to watch the sun melt into the ocean & search for Cape May diamonds. Their veterans ceremony is a nightly flag-lowering ceremony (in season) to honor a U.S. veteran, where the casket flag is lowered to the sound of taps. Very humbling. Parking gets a little crazy and lines the road so we go early and check out the gift shops. Will go atleast once every year we can get to Cape May!
This spot is absolutely worth a visit! The views are stunning—whether you're gazing across the water or down at the sandy shoreline. Searching for polished stones was a surprisingly fun and relaxing activity, especially for kids and beachcombers. One of the coolest features is the visible shipwreck just offshore—an unexpected and fascinating glimpse into the past. Bonus points for the free parking, which made accessing the area super easy. A peaceful, scenic place to spend an afternoon!

such a charming store with charming people and cute decor (check the bat box near of the register!), tons of guidebooks and field guides, binos and expensive scopes - it’s like a wonderland for birders and has a real festive vibe during migration. there’s also a small trail out back which i didn’t visit and some cute backyard birds and feeders! helpful maps and handouts, too. make this part of your cape may bird experience!!
Staff are friendly. There is a nice, short nature trail next to it.
It’s a great place to know more about birds. You can see a lot of birds during all seasons. Walk calmly without making noise so you can enjoy birdwatching. Store here offers a great range of binoculars, monoculars, bird watching tripods etc. Use the birdwatching blind to see birds in action like drinking water etc.
Beautiful peaceful trail and a superb shop with everything for an ornithologist or a tourist who love birds and birdwatching. Great Kids selection as well.
Two of the Finest people I know Paigne Cummingway & Mark Garland shares their knowledge & education of Birding, Monarchs & other Wildlife Experience with those interested in Our Natural World Surrounding Us.
Wonderfully friendly and helpful staff! Very thorough selection of books and all the gear one would want to view our feathered friends.
I don't understand the rave reviews. I was excited to bird watch and when I asked at the visitor's center about where to go, the people in the office were dismissive and told me there were no trails around here. I pointed to the map in my hand, found in the lucite container at the bottom of the stairs to the entrance, which had a trail map, and was told only that it was a small trail. I left the visitor's center quickly and walked around aimlessly. Maybe they were having a bad day? What a wasted opportunity and use of resources.
Such a beautiful place. The small trails behind offer so much if you really take the time to quietly look around. I really enjoy the bird blind as well.
