Pretty magical way to see the coast. Whales galore, dolphins, salmon jumping, sea birds and the occasional bear. Digital detox is a bonus. And if you need to work, take a nap and not worry about your equipment, $120 for the outside cabin is a steal.
Ferry service from Port Hardy, BC to Prince Rupert BC aboard the Northern Expedition. Check in and the 16.5 hour trip were absolutely perfect. I highly recommend! However, reservations were a nightmare, largely due to the lack of training/information of the BC Ferries reservations employees. I was told that there were only so many reservations for vehicles and since my vehicle is 7’1”, I needed to adjust my scheduled departure by more than a week. I was also told that they would measure my vehicle at the port and if they considered it less than 7’, I could have to wait to a future sailing. When I showed up at the port, they to,d me that on the Northern Expedition there is no distinction between tall or short vehicles, and there is no difference in reservation. Weeks of lost sleep worrying about a major trip interruption for absolutely no reason.
Such a fantastic voyage. We reserved a stateroom which was super cozy and made the trip. Food options are not the best for this voyage and we actually stopped at the supermarket in Port Hardy prior to sailing for some healthier options in our cooler. The trip was lovely and we saw the sunset, sunrise and whales!!
Shout out to Maureen and her staff at the Port Hardy terminal office!!! I can't begin to express our gratitude in helping us get to Prince Rupert this past Monday. Maureen is an awesome person to deal with and truly an asset to BC Ferries. Thank you Maureen and thanks to all the great staff at Port Hardy. Keep up the great work
Fun scenic trip from Prince Rupert to Port Hardy. The Northern Explorer was clean and comfortable. We were glad to have reserved a cabin, which had twin beds with sheets and a comforter a bathroom with a wonderful hot shower. A nap felt great after the 5:30 am arrival for the 7:30 am departure. The 16 hour trip was pleasant, the crew welcoming. There were plenty of comfortable chairs available and good views from various inside and outside deck areas.
My favorite way to travel to the south coast! It is a must do once in your life if you get a chance. I have done it 4 times and it is very relaxing. It is not cheap though, especially if you have a larger family. I usually take it on shoulder season to save a few bucks...
Heading to Prince Rupert? This is a beautiful trip through the inside passage. I would recommend clothing for rain/mist and reserving a cabin. The food is terrible on this ship (and you'll have 2 meals) -- bring your own -- anything is better (and what many others do). Hot/cold drinks are OK. The captain will announce any sightings of marine animals.
The inside passage is one the nicest ferry trips in the world. All day long one is treated to a magnificent scenery. Whales and killer whales, bald eagles and small fishing villages. There is lot to see during the trip.

Great guided tour with lots of information. Very friendly staff. Fun visitor centre. Even our 14-year-old son liked it!
Excellent welcome and a very interesting tour, which we were lucky enough to have in French thanks to Patrick. We learned a lot about salmon, how the hatchery works, and its essential role in preserving the salmon. Don't miss this tour if you're in Port Hardy; it's a must-do. A big thank you to the woman at the museum (sorry, we don't have her name) and Patrick!
This place is a hidden treasure. Ray and Robyn are amazing.
Great space for all ages! Come to learn all about BC salmon! The exhibits are as good as any you would find in Vancouver or elsewhere!
A very educational place to stop in and check out. Lots to see!
This is a clean, pretty little campground. The sites are all separated by at least some trees, the showers and laundry were joy inducing after a week on the trail. The is wood avaliable on site by donation. Best of all, it's a non-profit and all the profits go to the salmon hatchery located beside the campground. Go ahead, you'll like it.
Lovely spot by the river. camping and trails for a nature walk, as well as the hatchery were all closed due to covid-19, but I would love to come back to see them when everything's back up and running.
Great learning experience. Well worth a visit. The movies were an absolute hit as a diver. I could’ve spent an hour watching the videos alone!

Lovely little museum with a gift shop. There are many beautiful First Nations designed items available at the gift shop. The museum itself is educational for anyone who is new to the area and wants to learn more about it. Entrance is by donation and anyone who’s interested can buy membership.
I would probably not make it a priority to come to this little museum. They had some first Nations masks there but they knew nothing about them. There were very few presentations. The lighting and some of the displays were very poor so that you couldn't even see them. Clearly a dated and tired effort.
We visited in July 2024 and were led through by the curator (a historian) who taught my partner and I so much about the local culture. We purchased four wood carvings and a mask, and are thrilled to bring that west coast energy into our home. See the stunning Gilbert Dawson brown bear. Small but mighty operation. Deserves our support.
Great little museum! We visit often and always find something new to look at
Had a great time at the Museum. The woman there was wonderful and full of incredible information. Thier gift shop carrys some Native art at great prices. Picked up a couple of carved silver pieces and am really happy with them and thier cost.
A fantastic local museum sharing the rich First Nations and industrial history of Port Hardy. Definitely worth a stop if you enjoy local history. The gift shop has a great selection of books and local art!
A small museum and gift shop but I found it fantastic. You probably want to go through it and then ask one of the really helpful ladies about more details. There's a lot of background to what you see. They're expanding the museum and have great plans!
For a small museum it was great. You first walk into the gift shop which is great! They have a wide selection of books and super cheap post cards. I picked up a couple to send home. The exhibits were great. I really loved the Pre-history of Bear Cove exhibit. The only thing I would have liked was more explanations on certain exhibits.

Stop here and get all the maps and info you need before you hit the road for crazy adventures at San Josef bay and Grant beach. The girl that work there, I guess her name is Ashley, is so professional and clearly she loves her town and what she does. The place has a public washroom and an electrical socket to charge your small stuff.
Very nice staff, cute products at very reasonable prices, got a keychain and a wallet.
1st time here, appreciate the good ambiance and welcoming, friendly staff that gave good advices where to start and to go. Thanks 🙏
Went in hoping for souvenirs and they did have some. The 2 people working today (August 27) were super friendly and helpful . I just thought their effort should be recognized with a positive review.
Many thanks for the lady who work here. She is so knowledgeable. I got all the information about port hardy and surrounding areas, such as ferry information, activities available, places to buy souvenirs, whale watching and bold eagle watching spots.
Helpful information and suggestions from friendly, local people 😊👍 Thank you.
We got some good info there.
Went in to collect information on possible bear siting areas and was told to leave the bears alone. Had no intention of getting up close, but with two small children the bear tours were not an options. Very very unfriendly. Took a pamphlet and left.

A great place for cold water diving and kayaking. Great but serious: you have to be smart and careful to enjoy it.
I just happen to commute through the channel near bell island. But there is a beautiful small beach with a nice grassy camping site. Unfortunately there is no bathroom at the campsite so I have not had an opertunity to write a funny review for it.
Great whale watching area....many humpback whales...saw a lot of tails (flukes)...many pods and also saw a pod of orcas....then went to an e dress salmon bake...absolutely fantastic
Stunningly beautiful area and amazing cold water diving. Absolutely incredible!

A hidden gem on the waterfront in Port Hardy, offering a great selection of local beers on tap mixed in with Chinese food and traditional pub fare, seriously it was such a unique combination. While in Port Hardy during a long weekend my partner and I couldn't decide on dinner after driving around town and looking for something we happened across the quarter deck, the menu posted at the entrance intrigued us as we both immediately noticed several Chinese dishes on the menu. We decided to give it a try. First we ordered the local Vancouver island beer – hazy IPA, it was delicious and paired incredibly well with our first appetizer. We started off with an order of the deep fried tiger prawns in Kung pao sauce, and honestly it was incredible, the prawns were tender and soaked in a spicy sauce that I felt wasn’t toned down for the local populace and really held true to the more traditional Kung pao sauce, as for the main dishes we ordered a Singapore noodle, now I was expecting a traditional Hong Kong style curry with rice noodles, but the quarter deck has a totally different take on this dish, firstly they use a different noodle and a totally different spice, it was quite good and packed a good bite I wasn’t disappointed but wasn’t sure if it would fit the title Singapore noodle, a great dish nonetheless, the sweet and sour pork was on special so we ordered that, it was a very normal take on the dish and I have no complaints it was fairly decent, and lastly my partner ordered a Singapore laksa noodle soup. All I can say is wow, the broth was really top notch something I wouldn’t have expected to find in such a small town, the flavor was really nice. All in all I definitely recommend a trip to the quarter deck, grab a beer on tap and pair it with the Kung pao prawns, you won’t be disappointed
Probably the only place at Port Hardy serving BUBBLE TEA ! Friendly service. I'm so happy that they can freshly cook a sunny side up egg for breakfast buffet ! I love it !
Only 2 for atmosphere because the tv went out on eing night while the canucks game was on!
My family and I come to port Hardy every month on vacation. We always choose to stay at quaterdeck resort every time. We love the service and the food. Especially the beer. Lol
Why all the hate? The curry prawns on rice was absolutely delicious, and the service was amazing! Great food with fantastic beers on tap. I would definitely recommend it.
Just had an incredible dining experience at Quarterdeck restaurant! The food was absolutely amazing, and Albert and his team were incredibly courteous and attentive. 🌟 Highly recommend! Prompt service and delicious dishes made the evening even more special. #topnotchservice"
The food was good, but with the prawn dishes they don't shuck the shells off. Our friend had to dig in his prawn curry dish to get the shells off. We ordered deep fried prawns at $22 and they were battered with the shell on, we didn't eat them and said our concern and didn't offer to take it off the tab. The service was meteoker, I don't usually post reviews but it was pretty disappointing. They should at least put it on the menu that the shells are on.
Gracious service, and lovely view of the marina from our covered patio table, with bald eagles flying overhead. Our Asian food dishes were delicious- fresh ingredients, wonderful flavors, and attractively presented.

Lovely place to visit, feed the birds, grab some Fish n Chip's from Macy's. Fishing here is great also. Great view of Mountains! See the ferries ⛴️ and cruise ship across the water. Wonderful peaceful place to go if you just want a stroll along the sea 🌹
Nice little walkway next to the beach. Easy beach access. Well maintained park with washrooms on the side of the visitor information centre. You can also fill up your water bottle behind the building. The lady at the info centre was very helpful.
Nice beautiful park. 🙏 Appreciate the maintenance and cleanliness. Keep it up 🙏
The Highway #19 at its Northern side ends with a carrot, placed inside this park aptly named as Carrot Park. There is a half-bitten Carrot structure erected in this park and it is a commemorative symbol that residents of the Northern island wanted a finished highway. There is also a monument in the park to remind everyone of the sacrifices the Islanders made during the two world wars. There is a lot of fascinating history in this place and this park stands as a gentle reminder of the same. The park itself is well maintained. There is a restroom nearby and the views of the distant snow-covered mountains from this park are breathtaking. If you are in Port Hardy, do give this place a visit and if you are here at night, enjoy the beautiful star studded skies of the island.
Nice park, with a view of the BC Ferries terminal in the distance. When we visited, there was a local festival happening. Clean.
So great! Great location, great celebrations with local businesses, there’s a park for kids, it’s beside the marina, and the ocean/beach. Beautiful artwork around.
Beautiful park and the shoreline. Great playground. There are public toilets onsite and a good fish and chips place nearby.
This is the end of the road for Highway No.19 on Vancouver Island. There is an unique monument of a half-eaten carrot to remind the residents and visitors of the years of effort required to persuade the Province to extend it's road network to the northern tip of the island. That said, there is a nice lawn, children's playground and a beautiful promenade along the waterfront with excellent views of the open sea and the harbour. There is a First Nation Totem and a Cenotaph dedicated to the Servicemen of the Nation. A good place to visit for a morning or evening walk.

What a great gift it was to visit this amazing gallery and studio.
This is such a memorable stop, a must see if you are coming to the North Island
Visiting Calvin Hunts workshop and gallery was an experience of wonder and awe. Calvin was so personable, sharing stories and explaining his artwork when we enquired. Well worth a visit to this internationally acclaimed west coast carver and artist.
Wow. What an amazing indigenous artist. Calvin Hunt was present and spent an hour with us talking and sharing his stories about pieces of his art with us. Mr Hunt comes from a long lineage of well known and respected artists. We will cherish our time at his gallery.
Very pleasant. Mr Hunt was very generous with his time and explaining his work. Lots of limited edition prints and other work for sale in his gallery.
Great working studio downstairs and gallery upstairs. Call ahead to ensure it is open when you arrive.
Art and culture abound here. This is a must see place.
