This was the most incredible kayaking trip, one that fulfilled a lifelong dream and exceeded all my expectations! Paddling in Johnstone Strait was breathtaking on its own, but the highlight was seeing orcas and dolphins playing in the distance, and spotting bears along the shoreline - truly unforgettable wildlife encounters. The guides were knowledgeable and friendly, and they made everyone feel safe and comfortable on the water. After every action-packed day, we were treated to delicious meals - fresh, hearty, and beautifully prepared. The canvas tents were cozy and comfortable - the perfect place to relax after a day of paddling. This trip struck the perfect balance between activity and relaxation. I came away feeling not only refreshed but also deeply grateful for the experience. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an unforgettable adventure in nature!
We had an absolutely amazing journey with Spirit of the West Adventures in British Columbia — it was the perfect way to celebrate our honeymoon! From our arrival in Bella Bella and the boat ride from Shearwater to Calvert Island, everything was incredibly well organized and breathtakingly beautiful. We were lucky to have mostly sunny days (just one day of rain!), and even paddling through the ocean swells felt like an exciting challenge thanks to the expert guidance of our phenomenal guides, Bev and Cait. They made the trip unforgettable — from setting up the most scenic campsites, to preparing fresh and delicious meals every day, to creating magical evenings by the driftwood beach fire (so special!). It was our first time kayaking in the ocean, and we couldn’t have asked for better instruction or support. We felt safe, confident, and thrilled to be out there. This trip was the best decision we could have made for such a special occasion, and we would recommend Spirit of the West to absolutely anyone looking for an adventure, connection with nature, and memories that will last a lifetime.
Awesome experience. The glamp was comfortable with the luxury of a hottub to warm up at days end. Food was delicious. Staff were knowledgeable and kind. Wildlife was an amazing bonus with lots of whales, sea lions, seals, eagles...
Wasn’t on their trip, but bumped into guides Wade and Evelyn out on the water. They were incredibly friendly and I loved chatting with them! More outdoor guides need to take a leaf out of their book! Their welcoming natures helps to foster such a positive culture amongst the sea kayaking community! (They also looked to be taking amazing care of their guests!)
Highly recommend this marine wilderness life experience.. delightfully thoughtful accommodations, friendly & knowledgeable staff, deliciously prepared meals, and seemingly endless marine habitat to explore by kayak. Everyone can balance physical activity and remote relaxation to suit their personal desire.
The Whales and Wilderness Expedition (July 1-6 2025) was fabulous. I chose the company from the website and reviews and made a great decision. Guides Jon and Wade were so professional and kind. I was the old lady of the group at 73 and was very challenged but everyone helped out and I loved it. It was so remote - almost no other people or boats but lots of wildlife including humpbacks (and a couple of orcas on the last morning), seals, bald eagles, porpoises, a great group of otters checking us out, and on and on. Loved the trip!
Spirit of the West is the Best! Really, I had a wonderful experience with our staff of 5. The kayak guides were very helpful and very experienced. Also, younger than my 70+ years and very patient. I completely trusted them on the water with keeping us safe and rounding our experience with kayaking tips as well as their knowledge of the wonderful sea and land species that surrounded us. Our gourmet chef was also fabulous along with her assistant. Could not have had better food, 5+ stars! Everything was clean, well organized and safe. The cabins were warm enough at night and it felt very cozy Loved listening to the whales breathe as they went by our sight as well as wolves howling at night. Only one thing I was glad to leave behind; the dampness of my clothes and wearing wet gear.
A perfect trip, in every way! Amazing wildlife, superb guides, beyond comfortable facilities and wonderful people to share the experience with.

I did the 6 hour kayak tour in Quadra Island. The experience was great. The views of Quadra island are fantastic. We got to see many seals, colorful starfish, jellyfish, eagles, crubs and more. The kayak itself as well as the complimentary equipment were in good shape. The most important part is the great guidance - they let you feel safe with the kayak (although it was my first time ever), and take care of everything else. They made a nice lunch stop on a beautiful sandy beach, were we swam and enjoyed the water. Super recommend for those who seek peaceful water cruising along beautiful beach strip.
I had a very nice sunset tour and an exciting Quadra Classic day tour. Our guide Hanna (I hope I’m spelling her name right!) was kind, and attentive and clearly expert. I appreciated the healthy and tasty lunch. We met many seals, and had a swim (mine was very short, the water is warm for Canadians but cold for me as I am used to Mediterranean waters). The place is a dream for a kayaker, beginner or expert!
They set the bar high - I don’t think I’ll ever do a regular whale watching or kayak tour again. Their Wildlife and Kayak Zodiac Adventure was an extra special way to experience both these activities while at the same time getting further out into the islands and off shore than you usually do. We saw whales within 10 min of leaving the harbour and our zodiac driver/captain was fabulous. Super knowledgeable about the area, took us to where he knew a pod of dolphins were (with calves too!!), and toured us to check out other neat areas and treated us to more whales! And our paddle around Penn Islands was so serene. Our kayak guide was fabulous, we saw a whale splashing around, and got (safely) close to many seals and even a few pups! And a healthy lunch on an island?!? Yes please! I even went for a swim it was so beautiful. Truly, I’m not sure I’ll do other tours again, it really is something great to combine these together. And Quadra Island is such a lovely area to explore. Highly recommend this tour!
Great experience today with our awesome guide Charles. When we arrived it was rainy and we didn’t know what to expect. We decided we would go anyways and it turned out amazing. The other people in our group cancelled because of the weather so we ended up having just a nice little family tour with Charles. The dog and most really added to the experience and the water was smooth like glass. Honestly the day was pretty perfect. Would 10 out of 10 recommend this outfit for your next kayak adventure. Charles you’re a star!
We had a fantastic time on the Quadra Island Kayak tour, our first time kayaking, and it was an amazing experience. The scenery was absolutely stunning, and we were lucky enough to spot sea lions, starfish, and otters along the way. It was an unforgettable adventure, and we’re so grateful to our tour guide for making the experience even more special.
Had a fantastic day trip. The guide, Annabel, was wonderful. The provided lunch was delicious. I would definitely recommend going on their tours.
We did an overnight kayak trip and I genuinely came back spiritually changed. Our guide was infinitely knowledgeable, the planning was meticulous, and the kayaks were top of the line. We camped on a tiny island by ourselves and ate tasty meals. The cost was reasonable and organizing the trip was straightforward. We saw whales, a bald eagle, and countless seals. If you do one thing on Quadra, it should be kayaking with these folks.
We had such a great kayaking tour with our guides Ronan and Philippe! We did the 3 hour tour and it was a great mix of paddling, exploring, and break/ swim time. We also tried out their brand new paddle bikes which was such a fun experience. We will definitely be back! ♥️

Our group came out for the first week of the season. We enjoyed the layout of the site, the cabins and bathrooms had thoughtful touches, the place looked well cared for. I appreciated high quality coffee being available early in the morning and whenever I requested it in the evening. All the meals were healthy and diverse but the dinners were the meal of the day. We enjoyed good drinks, food and laughs amongst our group and the friends we met. The hot tub was a great way to relax at the end of the day. The guides were new but helpful and tried their best to tell stories and accommodate everyones skill levels.
very disappointed in how we and our situation were dealt with from Brody here. We had put down a deposit for a summer 2020 trip - pandemic happened so borders closed, trip cancelled. i suppose i should have been wary when we were advised that their cancelation policy actually calls for a 10% booking fee (even though their web site states a full refund if cancelled this far in advance). so the option was to have them keep the $1200 and reschedule for 2021 - ok, then 2021 came, covid border issues, cancelled again. finally all set for 2022, paid remainder of our fees, all set - tested positive for covid shortly before we were due to arrive. we let them know, they (obviously) cancelled us, and Brody offered to refund the fee specifically as he mentioned because they wouldn't be feeding us or water taxiing us. We understand about not being able to book another guest last minute and refunding the whole fee. we're reasonable people. when inquiry was made weeks later about the refund, he said no, he didn't say that, but offered to allow us to use the deposit for book yet another $4000 trip in 2023. i'm not upset they didn't want us to come when sick, i get that. but what i'm especially disappointed in is that we were dealt with in a dishonest manner. he specifically mentioned the "not having to feed us" bit in justifying a refund of even a small portion of the deposit, and later denied having made that statement. the double talk on the website regarding full refund vs 10% booking fee serves as notice to what "business as usual" means. (search the site for "booking fee" - not there) i'm sure if you can get there and stay on everybody's good side, it's a fun place to explore. just don't put any stock in what you're told by them.
Fantastic!! The cabin are wonderful, peaceful surroundings. The kayaking amazing everyday new adventures. Meals 5 star service. It is a hidden gem in Canada’s wilderness.
An amazing trip!! Great kayaking, fabulous food, very well organized and the best guides... Nick and Brody. I highly recommend this trip. It was a great experience and memory
Excellent resort for serious paddlers.
