Lots of great cheeses and specialty products available. Friendly staff and a nice drive. We'll worth it.
Although Balderdon is one of the best cheeses in the region, I was disappointed with their store. There was not a great selection of cheeses, and it was not well stocked. They do, however, serve Kawartha Dairy ice cream at the back.
Have not gone for couple years. Was absolutely taken back by what used to be a very classy shop with Baldersons own made cheese etc. Used to have even furniture. Ice cream parlor used to be so cute with small tables and umbrellas inside. Now it's dark dingy and none of there own cheese. I never do a bad review but so sad for what it's become. Feel bad for the area that they lost a real gem. Did however enjoy the woodworking shop in the building down from them. Very kind gents & a wealth of wood working info.
Great variety of cheese, souces and many other things.
We were disappointed. We usually go to other cheese factories which have huge selections. We thought because Balderson is one of our favorite cheeses we would go to the factory. They don't produce cheese there any more and don't sell to the public where it is produced now. Selection was very small and most was from other cheese companies. We ended up buying cheese made from Empire cheese. They also have Maple Dale which we go and buy direct. We went way out of way for nothing.
The staff were friendly but not very attentive. It's your typical roadside shop. They have the usual knick knacks. Mugs, trinkets, t-shirts, ice cream, alcohol and of course, cheese! You can also order prepared food to eat, but I'm not sure what they serve. If you happen to be passing by, then definitely in, but not worth the drive just to visit. You can buy their cheese anywhere for the same price or less.
I live in Almonte and have been enjoying Balderson cheeses for over 20 years. I work for a law firm with an office in Ottawa and one in Vancouver. So - the Vancouver office is taking a vote as to which cheese they want to include in their snack stock. Here was my input (even though I don't get a vote...): I can attest to the excellence of Balderson cheese. I used to buy it directly from the plant IN Balderson and still get it from their store there. Babybel is nice when you just want to grab one out of the fridge as a quick something that you can open and eat before you get back to your desk. The flavour of 2-year-old Balderson is intense and reminds me of the *REAL* cheese that I grew up on (in a small town in southern Ontario with its own local dairy). It is deserving of a few minutes to expertly slice each thin piece, choose the crackers of your choice and savour every nibble. It is exquisitely perfect on its own or with a dribble of honey, or a dollop of homemade hot pepper jelly or ginger orange marmalade.
Fancy cheeses. Couldn't find the 10 year aged cheddar though. They have alpaca socks, which make for nice Xmas gifts
