It’s a beautiful park. There are enough things to do to keep you entertained. There’s a cafe you can relax after a nice walk around the park. There’s a buggy you can ride on for $5 per person and a gold coin donation for children, it takes you around the park effortlessly. There’s a fernery where you can see various of plants and flowers, free of entrance! It is a big park, you can definitely get those steps in easily. There’s a public toilet too. You can see different age groups hanging around. You can meet different dog breeds too as they take a stroll on the park with their owner. You can also find ducks waddling around. Parking may be a struggle though. Best to park your car at the park rather than at the entrance of the park! Oh and it’s also wheelchair friendly too!

Came here after our hike on the mountain and this was a very relaxing environment to be in. Surrounded by the sound of nature and the beauty of that waterfall was calming after a long day.

One of the most beautiful and quirky walks we've done at New Years. The coast views, happy campers, little cafe nooks every km it seems, and the gorgeous bridge at the end. Outstanding!

New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. The sea, a boundless expanse of deep sapphire, stretched to the horizon, its surface a constant, rhythmic conversation with the shore. The salty tang of the ocean air invigorated the senses, a stark contrast to the gentle sweetness of the lake. The path, a ribbon of concrete, led us to the iconic Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, a structure of breathtaking, skeletal grace. It stood against the sky like the fossilized spine of a mythical creature, its white arches a stunning counterpoint to the wild green landscape and the deep blue sea. Walking across it felt like stepping into a work of art, a bridge between the natural world and human ingenuity.

The award-winning Coastal Walkway is a 13.2km path that forms an expansive sea-edge promenade stretching from Pioneer Park at Port Taranaki all the way to the eastern side of Bell Block Beach. Distance: The Coastal Walkway is 13.2km from Port Taranaki to the eastern end side of Bell Block Beach. Sections of the Walkway Port to the Wind Wand: 3.4km Wind Wand to Te Rewa Rewa Bridge: 4.5km Te Rewa Rewa Bridge to Tiromoana Cresent, Bell Block: 4.8km Grade: Easy. The walkway is paved, with some gentle slopes. It is excellent for walking, running, cycling, skateboarding, skating and scooting. Most people would be able to walk 4-6km/hr on the Coastal Walkway. Access points: There are numerous access points along the Walkway with car parking available in several places. Use the Coastal Walkway map to find entrances to the walkway, available car parking and other facilities.

Went here on a rainy morning. For visitors it’s $15 each which is not bad. The exhibition was about Maori and Polynesian with their weaving and other stories to tell. The two lovely ladies were really accomodating and did a great job with explaining the art and story behind it. They also went beyond just that, expressing their opinions and views and really striking a conversation. I guess this is what art is about, it’s more than just the visuals. The place is spacious and well managed.

Small but mighty art gallery, very chill and feels great to be there, easily spend an hour or more. great place to visit especially on a rainy day. Located right in the centre of the town, next to the white hart hotel and a short walk from the centre city mall. Great interactive art work and craft areas for both the young and not so young. None New Plymouth residence will be charged a $15 admission. Super friendly staff, always keen to walk you through the art work, tell you about the artists, and discuss observations. Great experience, highly recommend.

2024: My gosh, that is one shiny building. One of the more striking buildings I've seen in NZ, which steals the spotlight from the exhibitions, as they pale in comparison. Most of the interior was rather empty, I guess with the focus on negative space..? The main art is the architecture.

The exhibition was of island weaving and print's, there was another exhibition too. It was very interesting to see up close these natural beautiful mats, hangings and the detailing. 7 ladies , took 7 months to create one hanging 😍

I do very much like the design of this building, it's very impressive. Staff are friendly and helpful. There are a few intresting galleries but not a huge amount and it doesn't take long to go through them ☺️

A good Gallery to take some photos of both the Gallery itself And the exhibitions. A center to experience some very modern artifacts. Some of the areas were closed when I visited.so it seems quite small.

The building itself is very distinctive and well designed. There is a 15$ entry fee. The staffs are very friendly and helpful. The displays/ arts works of Len Lye are interesting and look unique. The staff will initiate the movement of the art pieces in certain time so you can fully understand the arts works. It is not for everyone and you can appreciate the futuristic arts of Len Lye. There is a small souvenir shop. Overall pleasant trip. P.s - there is no car park at the gallery and needs to park on the street parkings.

There was a lot of information on the surrounding area especially around the Mt, the eruptions and how the land was formed, and the different soils/ rocks that now make up the area. Another section was about the old days, what this area is known for and famous things and people from here. It was very informative and interesting

Kudos to the Government of New Zealand for keeping this landmark institution updated . One has ample time to learn and discover the hard work by the New Zealanders striving for excellence at all times . A must visit ! Especially the younger generation can learn its history of scientific efforts to conserve and preserve nature and learn from it . There is an old saying Nature doesn’t need us we need it so watch and be conscious what you are doing !

Amazing museum this is a great place for all ages and on a rainy day. Free admission for everyone. The front entrance is not in use, you will need to enter from the side entrance which is not all that obvious. Located right near the beach/sea. Walking distance from the centre city mall in town. Kids are welcome to do the scavenger hunt and get cute stamps.

Puke Ariki is an incredibly informative and engaging museum that's a delight to explore. Inside, you'll find Te Takapou Whariki o Taranaki, an exhibit showcasing Māori culture—though photography isn’t allowed, it's a deeply enriching experience. The museum also features Taranaki Life, an insightful exhibit about the region's heritage. During our visit, there was an intriguing exhibition about the moon, which added to the experience. There’s also an i-SITE within the museum, making it a convenient stop for travel information. A must-visit for anyone exploring Taranaki!

We had so much fun in Puke Ariki. Small but very informative about the history of New Plymouth and lives of new migrants. Also fun facts about brown Kiwi and reefs project are very interesting. This is the Free entry. Overall, great place for family to visit - as indoors activity.

I didn’t know it was a free entrance which is very generous! You can donate to the zoo, though! It’s a nice small zoo. Some needed attention with the maintenance, especially where the otters are situated. The animals were sooo cute. Unfortunately, we were too late to meet the Capybara as they moved him to Wellington Zoo. We were so excited to see him. It was nice to be inside the aviary, most of the birds were sleeping perched up on the trees. It was super cute. It’s a nice place to visit with the kids, it’s for all ages though. Hope you can donate when you visit 😊

Great zoo, and it's free! The birds are amazing and we loved the meerkats. Hope they will bring the capybara back. Cool playground for the kids too. And we saw Ross the cat out the gate on the way back home!

Possibly the best zoo that I have ever been to. No concerns for the animals. They are clearly loved. Walking through the bird enclosure is a special experience. A great place to bring the family, and set within one of the best parks in the country. Best of all it's free. Full marks to New Plymouth. Every time I visit, I want to move here. A small but nice zoo, together with kids playground there, a nice place for some family fun time.

It's a small zoo but wonderful. I went with an 11 year old and an 8 year old and they had a blast. We spoke at length with two of the keepers and they were both very happy to answer all the questions the children asked which made the visit so much better.

The Cafe had a good range of food, not many vegan options, but there were some adaptable options. The chips were nice. The garden was bright and my parents enjoyed the tour around what we could walk. Some of us went to the waterwheel. It was a good day out

About my third visit to Pukeiti, as a Tour Coach Driver. What an amazing asset for locals and visitors alike. Take great care on the road, in and out. A highly recommended outing.

Pukeiti Gardens is an absolute gem and a must-visit for anyone, especially families! The gardens are simply breathtaking, with stunning landscapes and lush greenery at every turn. My son had a blast on the treehouse hunt, making it a fun adventure through the gardens. Even though we visited on a rainy day, the beauty of the place still left us in awe – it’s perfect no matter the weather! If you're a garden lover or just looking for a peaceful and enchanting experience, I highly recommend Pukeiti Gardens. It’s an unforgettable spot!

A beautiful botanical garden set in a rainforest that features rhododendrons of all varieties, and many other wonderful plants and trees. It’s free to enter and walk the family friendly trails. There are also longer trails that can be taken as well. It is all well kept, has restrooms in multiple locations, and great signage.

Nice park. Plenty of walking tracks. Highly recommend for kids and family.

The birds are out sing there morning songs greeting in a new day. It one lane roads most of the way to get here so if your in a bigger vehicle could be a bit of a Challenge to get here and go back if you meet other vehicles going the other way. But well worthy of your time and Patience. With parking to Accommodate your staying over night or two because there so much to do and see and enjoy a good place to get intouch with nature.

Poor value and poor customer service on this day. Best check availability and garnishes (before you pay $7.50 for a scoop of ice-cream.) And don't be afraid to chase your order as they don't care for ice-cream visitors.

A decent climb, nice to see spots like this where you actually need to climb. Steps with railing 2/3 of the way up, rocky climb with guide chain to top. A little sketchy coming back down if you're not that confident

333 steps took me as far as I was happy to climb. I avoided the challenge of the remaining strenuous steep cliff face climb to the summit. Clinging to a chain "rope" Spectacular views

Good place to do a bit climbing. Bit steep, top section has chain only no stairs. The top has fantastic view to city, ocean, beach and Mt Taranaki, well worth the effort

BEAUTIFUL place to catch the sunset or even walk the beach. Tons of spots to park and sit

Besides Pukekura Park and the Coastal Walkway which are the best spots in New Plymouth, this place is also a must see. It is situated about a 10 minute drive outside the CBD and provides views of New Plymouth, Mount Taranaki and the Tasman Sea. If you feel like exercising, visitors can climb the rock though it does get quite dangerous after a certain point so only go as far you are comfortable with. This is just a neat attraction with views and a good workout.

Great view of New Plymouth and the port. We saw Mount Taranaki backward on a fine day and small islands ahead! We enjoyed the front black sand beach without going all the way up to the top. There are a lot of seagulls. Don't be scared. I enjoyed sitting on the edge of a large lawn with my kids and feeding a beautiful flying seagull. Take your time and enjoy the scenery!

It’s a short, steep hike with the top half pretty much a climb up using the provided anchored posts and chains. With reasonable fitness we were able to get there in under 15 mins, and less time down. Great views of the whole New Plymouth region, both of the coastal and Mountain View.

Make sure the house is ppen for tour when you go. Fabulous tribute to theArts and Crafts movement. Gardens to get lost in, river to paddle in, flowers everywhere. My second visit.

Freedom camping is allowed in the parking lot. Toilets are open at night, less than 200m away downhill into the park. Drinking water is there too. No lights in the park at night so you will need flashlights. We were the only car there, it was very quiet and it felt safe.

There is simply nowhere nicer to wander around for an hour or two on a sunny day than here..

My husband and I really loved and enjoyed this beautiful property. Majestic and so wonderfully looked after by three staff we heard. We had a great wander around the sublime designs, which leads you onto the next pocket of wonder. We are going to go back and have a quiet relaxed special picnic there. A wonderful place, well worth visiting. It's built on a steep hillside, which is part of the charm, and bounded by a brisk and lovely river at the bottom. The house and gardens are maintained to the highest standards; there's a lot of love in the original planning and subsequent upkeep. Almost on every level and around every corner there's something different to see, to intrigue you, and to offer pleasure. Thanks TRC.

A very nice beach with some amazing views of local nature. Not a good place for swimming since the waves can be quite aggresive so make sure you are proficient in wave and tide knowdeledge. Beach itself has nice sand and great view of the cliffs. There is a staircase next to the carpark to acces the beach. Also a large sand hill you can climb and descent if you are feeling adventurous. Overal a pleasant place to visit if you are in the area.

Another special place in New Plymouth. The views alone are spectacular. Add a sunset, and the photography options are exceptional. I easily spent an hour here one evening in June 2023, and there were a lot of other people there too. Amazing atmosphere, and very popular.

Huge range on conditions and activities. Surf is world class on a good day, same angle as the Co45t highway so gets those southerly swells head-on. Picturesque views and the Mauri is UNBEATABLE ✊💚🌊🗻

Good amount of parking, there are rubbish bins in the parking area. You can swim in the lake or do the coastal walk where this iconic bridge(Te Rewa Rewa bridge) in New Plymouth is where you can also capture another iconic feature of Taranaki(Mt Taranaki/Egmont in the background of the bridges structure on a cloud free day.

Nice and easy walk along the Coastal Walkway to Te Rewa Rewa Bridge. It’s only about a 5-minute walk from the car park. Beautiful views all the way, and if you’re lucky, the mountain pops out too. We only caught a quick glimpse, but it was still worth it!

Always a picturesque sight, very much designed of ribs of a skeleton, was painted last year so looks very bright in the sunshine, also if you stand at the end of the bridge and look though there is a good picture of the mountain

The wind wand is part of the coastal walk or bike trail. Highly recommended. Beautiful clean and close to the other attractions of New Plymouth

It the easier of the parking meters to pay over the phone wish they upgrade the other so they all were the same. Because we all know we always in a rush to get somewhere on time especially when it could be on the other side of town

Obviously an icon on the coastal walkway, the wind wand sways back & forth on the ocean breezes as the sculptor, Len Lye, wished it to. He had a passion for dance in his work evidently & how that manifests on the breezes with the ocean as a backdrop is artistic in itself. At night the light is an icon of the waterfront

I'm not sure what the wind wand is for, but it was apparently designed by a famous NZ artist (Len Lye). The coastal walkway where the wind wand stands (or sways) is an amazing walk though and definitely worth the visit. This kinetic sculpture just makes things more interesting, I guess 👌😉

The wind wand really is a great tourist attraction in New Plymouth, such a masterpiece, its along the coastal walkway which gives the walk a pleasent little (big) surprise haha, would definitely insist you check this monument out its amazing.

Tranquil sculpture as it sways with the wind. Good coastal walk as well - nice and close to city centre so u could come here for a walk after meals

Must go. As nice as Mount Fuji. The best part is, so less people. You can have a peaceful and quiet time there.

Great cycling/walking path along the coast. Lots of spots to sit and admire the coastal views. There are occasionaly toilets along the concrete path.

East End Beach is such a beautiful place to just sit and watch everyone walking, the dogs being walked. We take it for granted that there's a beach so close that we forget we can go there! Had breakfast there 2 sundays in a row now 😊

Fantastic addition to the New Plymouth coastline. Something for everyone to enjoy including coffee and refreshments 😎 Boardwalks and New Plymouth are synonymous 🤩🚲🚶‍♂️🦮⛱️☀️

A great area from New Plymouth to Fitzroy where the coastal pathway follows the ocean. Lots of walking which I love. Added bonus is the beach, the views & the salty, fresh air.

As you can see I like taking Sunset pics and pics out to Sea from our lovely Recreation Reserves..We here in New Plymouth and Taranaki are blessed with numerous Recreation Reserves

Edited to 3 stars because of the response given. The children were within my sight. And I didn’t have an issue with what was being asked. I had an issue with HOW she spoke to the children. And yes I could see and hear her from where I was. Changing this to sound like the children were doing something wrong is why this is changed from 4 to 3 stars. Accept criticism as a way to improve. Don’t shift blame on children. It also would not have been that hard to have the conversation with the adult she could see. Especially as we were pretty much the only ones present the entire visit and she knew I was watching from my seated position as had spoken to me AND the other staff member knew the children were unsupervised as we had a discussion about it This was the kids highlight of the trip. Unfortunately due to gravel paths and mobility issues I wasn’t able to spend as much time showing them around as I had hoped. The man (South African maybe) that works there was lovely. The wee Asian woman not at all lovely and made two kids cry. Well kept facility and happy animals. A wee tidy up of the paths so I could have managed to give the children a wee bit more time with the monkeys would have made it a 5*. Unexpected for such a small zoo

We had an awesome time at Pouakai Zoo. The place is really well kept, the staff were all super friendly, and there’s even a cool little bush walk. We got to watch the lions being fed and the cheeky monkeys gave us plenty of laughs. Great spot for a family day out!

Amazing zoo. Great for kids. You are able to feed and pet the donkeys, goats, lamas and ostriches who are very friendly. It was super cool to see the owner feed the lions. He was a great source of information and was willing to answers everyone’s questions. It’s beautiful to see how much they care about conversation and the animals. Our family makes the 1 and a half drive up whenever we get the chance.

To be honest this was far the best one I have been to its so cool how close you can get to the animals and they are in open cages instead of being behind plastic windows I enjoyed it more then the kids I think 🤔 it is small but worth it the monkeys so cute and try handing you little sticks and stuff 💯 I will be here again and again getting to watch the loins get feed was a blast

A small Zoo, that really looks after the animals they have. The lions are the highlight and look incredible. You're able to buy animal food to feed some of the animals, which the kids loved.

We came in today and it’s definitely much better than it used to be! Owners super lovely, we had a really good time! We’ll definitely be back. Thank you! 🙂

Best little zoo I have ever been to. Easy to get around. Lovely staff. The animals were outstanding. Clean and tidy. I will take my other grandchildren. The lions are great, easy to see and tranquil. First time I have heard a lion roar. Loved it.

What a little gem, lots to see,explore and do for any age family members and all free/donation if able. Couple of floors with many different things plenty of toilets available and cafe onsite

Interesting museum - easy to access and a great way to spend a few hours learning about Taranaki and NZ history

Very good service and very informative with the few questions I had, also needed the battery in my watch changed & they got it done straight away.

The staff were so friendly and helpful at recommending walks and activities around New Plymouth and Taranaki. The shop was lovely as well with lots of Kiwiana and region specific books, toys, puzzles and gifts

Puke Ariki i-site and museum showcases informative and interactive exhibits about the early inhabitants of the place, the wildlife and the history of Mt. Egmont Volcano. It is worth the visit if you like to have a glimpse of Taranaki’s fascinating history.

So pretty and peaceful. Lovely to know that people care enough to pretty up an old cemetery like this one. I imagine November onwards to Autumn is beautiful here when everything is fully flowering.

A breathtaking experience. A place so peaceful and beautiful, cared for with such love and utterly memorable . The flowers were a joy . What a tribute to the deceased.

The Te Henui Cemetery. Is beautiful place to visit your family who have passedaway. Very quiet peaceful place.

Though the church was closed at the time when we visit, we took a walk around and in the garden of remembrance.

If visiting New Plymouth...or if you live here..you should visit the cathedral. Although the actual Cathedral is closed for earthquake strengthening there is still much to see. The graveyard is full of people with some of the most interesting stories. The garden of remembrance is a beautiful and serene place to sit and contemplate. There is always a warm welcome at the welcome desk for information

I love wandering around this churchyard. Unfortunately, its closed now due to earthquake or something. I have a family plaque from the 1800's inside. The trees are beautiful, and so is the architecture. Very tranquil.

Hopeful place. Closed because of earthquake regulations and possible danger. You can not see inside but the lovely building and trees can be viewed. A path from Pukekura Park leads to the statues behind the Cathedral and the video shows how it has a table for lunchtime . It is within walking distance from the central business district.The building at the back is new.

Lovely grounds with interesting old trees and a walk up the hill behind. Cathedral closed for strengthening repairs when we visited. Small friendly op shop across the road.
