I can't believe these guys weren't on Google and I hope now that they're here, it will lead others to go and try out this amazing cooking school. We were picked up from our hotel for the evening class at 3.30pm and returned back to our hotel at 8pm. During this time we were taken to an authentic Thai Market, a place where you won't see western tourists hanging around. We were shown all round the market and informed in great detail all the ingredients, what they are for. We then purchased fresh ingredients for the foods that we already chose to make. Oay then took us to her home and gave us a snack before we got going. All the ingredients for our soup, stir fry and curry were all laid out ready for us to chop and prepare. Detailed step by step instructions were given throughout and Oay was very patient when dealing with us both. We got to enjoy the soup and stir fry first which had amazing flavours before moving in to make curry pastes. Making the paste is hard work, smashing up all the ingredients with a mortar and pestle but truly worth it when you get to make your curry as they were superb! Finally we got to make our deserts and again, the sticky rice and mango we made was delicious. Oay was the perfect host and I cannot recommend the cooking school enough.
My wife and I had an absolute blast learning to cook authentic Thai dishes with Oay! She clearly loved both cooking and teaching others to cook, and the dishes we made were excellent (even though my wife and I certainly aren't the best cooks). My wife and I picked completely items to cook, which was nice to have Oay show us the different ways to prepare the dishes we chose. Oay took us around the local market and showed us all sorts of local produce as well as what to look for out for when selecting the best items. She was even so sweet she stopped for a second to help an English speaking man by translating between him and one of the local vendors. I can't think of a better way to spend the day in Chiang Mai than learning to cook amazing food with Oay. This class was extremely worthwhile, and I'm excited to go home and try out our recipes with friends using the knowledge we gained today at Bhum Thai Cookery School. Easily 5 stars, but I'd literally rate it higher if I could.
Oay and her cooking course were a highlight of our several weeks in Thailand. My boyfriend and I were very lucky to have her all to ourselves for a morning cooking course, but her facility and competence would make her course ideal for larger groups as well! We started with a trip to a local market outside of the touristy center of Chiang Mai; we were the only foreigners in the market. She showed us all around and answered our hundred questions. Oay’s passion for ingredients and teaching were evident from the first moments in the market. Through her, we interacted with other locals, and learned so much about the components of Thai cuisine (what brand of chili paste to look for in the Asian grocery back home, for instance). Oay then drove us to her home, where she has a lovely outdoor kitchen teaching facility. She welcomed us as guests in the local fashion with a delicious treat, and then we tied on our aprons and dove in. The next several hours flew by in a wonderful progression of instruction, cooking, chatting, interacting, and eating! Oay doesn’t just tell you what to do, she tells you why, and wants you to understand the ingredients and the method. She’s an easy going and experienced instructor. Nothing was stressful or rushed despite making six different dishes each! My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time interacting with her and each other. It was a day and experience that we savored like no other while in Thailand. Oay works from her home; she isn’t a company with a middleman. Her home and the market aren’t in the touristy center of Chiang Mai, but are still close by in Hong Dong. She will come and pick you up from your hotel and take you back once the experience is over. If you are looking for an absolutely authentic experience in Thailand, where you are treated like a local and guest, and if you like Thai food regardless of your skill in the kitchen (from beginner to amateur chef!), I cannot recommend Bhum Thai and Oay enough. We will always remember our fantastic morning with her. Kop khun kaa, Oay! Lam Dee!
I would highly recommend this cooking school! We were picked up at our hotel by the owner (Yu) and taken to the Hang dong market where we buy some produce and Yu explained how all the different food were used in Thai cooking. We then had to choose 5 courses to cook from about 23 dishes. You get your own cooking station and the results were amazing. You eat everything you cook and you will not be disappointed! You get al of the recipes on a cook book at the end of the day which is included in the price... and get a ride back to your hotel. This is a must do class if your are in or around Chiang Mai!!
Really good experience. Hoï (sorry if I mis spell your name) is a great teacher. First we go to the market buy the food, she guide you into the market and explain you everything about the food. Then we learn how to make a real Thai dishes step by step in her home. It’s a small family business and it will delightful for the explorer who want an authentic experience
