Driving the coastal route from Málaga to Cádiz, Baelo Claudia provided a fascinating insight into the methods the Romans used for preserving fish, fishing for tuna, and producing ‘garum’ - a fish sauce delicacy. Managing to survive an earthquake and pirate raids, it stands as one of Spain’s most complete Roman towns. Efficient, clean set-up – well worth stopping off for.

Prepare yourself with information before visiting this place. It is a very powerful historical site, and if you are filled with knowledge of what happened there, you will gain unforgettable impressions and emotions from being there. It is very important to preserve such relics in order to have the opportunity to touch ancient history.

Lots to see, very well laid out. Interesting site thats right on the beach too.. Wrnt on a Sunday so the Museum was closed but could get access to the remainder of the site.

History is for me very important and can not leave without it. It’s everyone’s present and we need to embrace it. Baelo Claudia site is small and well kept. The government of Spain really does beautiful work to keep their heritage, weather is Roman, or Muslim heritage. Baelo Claudia was an ancient Roman town in Hispania, located 22 kilometres (14 mi) outside of Tarifa, near the village of Bolonia, in southern Spain. Situated on the shore of the Strait of Gibraltar, the town began as a fishing village and trading hub when it was settled approximately 2,000 years ago. Although a prosperous town at the time of Emperor Claudius, it went into a decline partially fueled by earthquakes and was abandoned by the 6th century

Truly a hidden gem in this part of Spain! We visited in the winter and it was so beautifully quiet despite the gorgeous sunny weather. Super cheap entry (particularly if you are an EU resident) and lots to look at and explore- just incredible to see the ruins of an old theatre and to picture what this place looked like so long ago. The museum is small but exquisitely curated, we learnt a lot and would love to come back to wander around again! So stunning right by the ocean, with all the lovely olive trees. There are places to have a picnic too, which I think is just so charming. Definitely recommend this place!

Nice location next to the beach. It’s free to visit for EU citizens. We came at 14:30 and we were constantly reminded by the staff that they were closing in 30.min (15:00)and we had to be “Rapido” 😅 A bit annoying but we still managed to hurry up and see the outside ruins. So be aware of the opening hours beforehand. There is a free parking outside the museum entrance. Worth the visit if you are passing by.

Shocking conditions!! Never in my life have I ever been to a zoo that made me feel so sad for the animals inside it. Tiny cages, the poor lions with nothing to look at, most animals had no water. Normally zoos abroad are far better than the uk but this was plain awful. Dirty glass, toilets filthy and door locks broken. Paid £52 euros and I wish I hadn’t. I feel for those poor animals they deserve better

Always have had mixed feelings about zoos And circuses, but from what I understand people need to go to this zoo to support them because it's more like a sanctuary in that they've saved these animals from smugglers and or owners who bought them and couldn't take care of them properly. Just hate seeing all the small enclosures for all of these living creatures... But it's an excellent place to take young children to show them up close and personal all the different animals that live on our planet. They even sell animal food, so the children can feed the smaller safer animals... Here I'm actually holding a Spanish Imperial Eagle, and then the second photo is a white wallaby, and the third one is of capybaras.

Amazing! We were a bit sceptical even having read the positive reviews (we've been to quite a lot zoos), but the expreciene was totally worth it! The pen with parrots was the best, we spent maybe more than an hour in that pen. Kids and adults likewise were very happy with this visit. 100% recommended!

Absolutely worth the visit, loads of animals which some of them you can touch and interact, no queues no tourists scams very surprised. Well done, you can buy tickets on site.

Zoo Review – Great Experience Overall The zoo has an amazing variety and number of residents — you can see so many animals in a small and well-organized space. It’s compact, full of trees and shade, which makes walking around very pleasant. However, there are quite a few steps, so it might be a bit tricky if you’re visiting with a stroller. Some animals seem a little unhappy, but sadly that’s something we often see in zoos. The staff are very friendly and speak English, which is a big plus. There’s no official parking area — cars park in a nearby field, which isn’t flat, so be careful with your car’s underbody. Overall, it was a great experience and definitely worth a visit.

Some areas of the zoo are amazing, enclosures are horrible though… for the amount of money the public pay they should be bigger. The black panther was pacing and had no enrichment whatsoever. My partner has been visiting the zoo for at least 10 years and claims no improvements have been made. We also spotted a dead owl before staff did and had to inform them, apparently there was no obvious cause of death.

Cape Trafalgar, battle of Trafalgar! Beautiful site with a good view of the Coast. There are paths around the lighthouse and beaches surrounding it. But if you come here to read historical info signs about the battle, there are none. (Spain and France lost this one 🙄). But its still worth a visit.

We didn't know how steeped in history this place is. Indeed the trafalgar-square in London got its name from this place, where Englands ships beated French and Spanish Ships crushingly. Since then England was the one sea power for over a hundred years. It's nice to look at sunsets and moonrises as well ;-)

Beautiful palace with fantastic art. The guide only spoke really speedy spanish so we couldn't follow much which was a shame as it is such a fascinating place. The hotel looks great for a future stay!

It was pretty much closed when we visited but the cafe was open. Nice gardens but the staff was grumpy and only served coffee, despite the request for water.

This is my third time back with FlySpain. Just completed a MentorPlus and CrossCountry courses, and again excellent! Great and knowledgeable staff. Made every effort to get us in the air but, also with respect to the weather and skill levels, kept it safe. Fred, Paolo, Rob and Nik with there decades of experience were fantastic instructors/guides. Went to a variety of locations based on conditions. Even a shuttle pick up and drop off from Malaga Airport is included! Excellent prices and accommodations are included as part of the course. Just a 10 minute walk to town for restaurants and groceries. Hope to be back again FlySpain!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ FlySpain BHPA CP Course Review I completed my BHPA CP Paragliding course with FlySpain and couldn’t recommend them more highly. Instructors Fred and Rob were exceptional throughout. They struck a great balance between structure and flexibility, keeping safety at the core while adapting to each pilot’s level and confidence. Their pragmatic approach stood out. Those of us with a bit more experience were encouraged to progress faster and try more challenging tasks, while others received the extra guidance and coaching they needed. It created a supportive atmosphere where everyone could develop at their own pace without pressure or delay. The week was well organised, the equipment was in top condition, and the site offered a perfect range of conditions for learning. By the end, I felt genuinely confident flying independently, something that’s a credit to how Fred and Rob teach. If you’re considering learning to paraglide or completing your CP, FlySpain is a superb choice.

Rob, Dylan, Fred, Marcello, and Paolo are incredible instructors — professional, patient, and fully committed to helping every student get the best out of the course. The safety standards are top-tier, and it’s clear how much time and effort goes into every aspect of the training. Great accommodation and a friendly, supportive community made it an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend.

The instruction with Tony, Julio and Paulo over the two courses EP/CP was outstanding. Accommodation offers a choice of rooms and cooking facilities with a small pool close to town. Great team, efficient and your safety is paramount to them. Looking forward to returning for my MP!

I did the EP course here in late September/early October. The course and instructors were great and the accommodation was very pleasant to stay in. I would happily come here again for further training! It was also very enjoyable and informative being able to socialise with other paragliders who were staying in the same accommodation but doing different training.

This is my second time coming to Algodonales to do a course with FlySpain. I was on the Mentor Plus with Paolo and Dylan. I really enjoyed my time, despite being a group with varying airtime and experience the instructors made sure they catered to everyone’s abilities. Dylan and Paolo are very safety conscious, knowledgeable, patient and friendly. I got a lot out of the week and was able to be pushed of my comfort zone because I felt so safe and seen (they always had eyes on us and were on the radio whenever it was needed). The instructors were open to my many questions and always had answers and ways to explain things so I could understand. My highlight was having my first thermalling flights! For a travelling dirt bag like myself the price is at my limit of my budget, but I believe it is worth it for the quality of the course, instructors and accomodation. The whole team is amazing. I would recommend this school to my friends and hope to be back again one day. Much love, thanks team!

My son and I have just returned from two weeks with FlySpain in Algodonales doing back to back EP and CP courses and to sum everything up in two words: SIMPLY FANTASTIC. We could not have asked for more. Our instructors, Marcelo, Julio, Fred & Dylan overseen by Rob, were all absolutely top draw. We could not have wanted for a more comprehensive, safe, teaching environment with great kit and weather. Nothing was too much trouble and every effort was made to create and enjoyable balance of theory and flying, resulting in some epic soaring flights, including nearly two hours at sunset over El Bosque. To cap things off, we stayed in FlySpain’s accommodation “The Eagle’s nest”, a very comfortable cluster of houses equipped with all mod cons, with outside terraces and pool, five minutes walk from the centre of Algo’ and its cafes and bars. Finally, a shout out to Nic, who clearly works tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the show on the road and makes all of the organisation seem effortless. Truly an exceptional experience and thank you FlySpain for the life changing memories! I cannot recommend them enough.

Probably the best beach in the area, my favourite anyway. 1) Plenty of parking 2) Backed by dunes (as opposed to an urban area) 3) Recently (last year?) renovated facilities every 500m or so 4) Couple of seasonal chiringuitos which, though pricey, are nonetheless pretty good

Great amenities among an abundance of free parking. Showers, restrooms, the boardwalk, and the street side parking were all perfect. If you’re looking to get to a beach out of the heart of the city this is the place. A bit of a south wind made the sand tough to avoid but the showers took care of it with easy. Seems to be some cool hiking trails and free camper parking. I would love to go back and cycle the new VERY LONG board walk they are building.

It is a good a not so overcrowded beach with a hot water. My children found it especially great because there were tons of very nice shells!

Very beautiful beach with enough space to sit and to keep distance. The beach is very well looked after and super clean. There are showers taps and toilets available. Easy to reach by car with plenty of parking close by. Also possible to come by bus.

The last sign post said "Dog Beach 250m". My son, dog and I entered through the "Dog Beach" entrance where a boardwalk takes you a few hundred metres to the beach. There are no further signposts and it's impossible to know where the dog friendly beach starts. After about 30 minutes of fun on the beach with other dog owners a policeman came on a quad and told us one by one to move further up the beach. I saw him writing tickets to some dig owners. He wasn't very helpful. We walked and walked, but he wanted us to walk more. In the end we gave up and turned back and went home. I won't return. It's a pity, such a long and beautiful beach which is advertised as dog-friendly but it's made impossible to use.

The taverna is very authentic just beside the wine barrels. I went on a tour which is well worth to experience. You learn about the local wines and at the end there is a degustation, so you can easier choose which wines you prefer. I was going for the red sweet one...., but manzanilla is also good to take it with food.

We chose pisto with eggs and fish stew. Everything was delicious and abundant. Fair priced. Service a bit slow, but place was packed.

Thursday evening. Google said open, the website said open, the sign outside said open. It was closed. 3 stars because I ate here previously and it was excellent.

Despite the friendliness of the waiter, the restaurant's policy seems to be energetically pushing dishes and drinks onto the customers and bullying them. First, it was some house wine that "everyone has" in the restaurant. Some of us thought it was a welcoming drink. We agreed to take it only to find it to be too alcoholic and we were unable to drink it. As per the picture attached  taken at the end of the meal. Secondly, after "negotiating" the dishes, we found them all greasy and oily. Finally, when we questioned the bill with the wine and a service charge and asked to talk with the manager, he came in just to confront and bully us. After reading the other reviews here, we confirmed that this service and practices are part of their organizational culture. I would not return here even if I was being paid for it.

Our guide made this place a final stop of our tour; Through the ambient cellar that housed numerous barrels of wine still maturing and into the open air patio which was naturally shaded by greenery. Our server lead us to another section of the restaurant which had us seated next to more barrels. We've sampled the wine, to my own opinion was delicious. The food served was delectable yet affordable. The atmosphere overall had a rustic, homely feel that made the entire experience enjoyable. I encourage anyone who visits this city, should definitely head to this restaurant.

Magical courtyard when I visited on a Sunday, Oct 2018. Families on their sobremesas, the fat lady sings, perfect festive atmosphere all round to soak up the afternoon. If you prefer a market-to-table experience, pick up 500g-1kg of fresh Sanlucar de Barrameda langostinos from the mercado a short walk away and bring them here to be cooked a la plancha (grilled), al vapor (steamed)... The castle is certainly not as imposing as some we have visited in the area, but it offers a warm welcome at reception., some interesting history and a small museum of costumes and arms. Well worth a look if you're in town

Beautiful castle in Sanlúcar with interesting history. It costs about €8-€9 per person and they give you the handheld “tour guide” to use while you’re there. You’re prompted by signage to press the applicable number for the area you are walking through and the guide tells you all about it. We went around noon and there was only a few other people there, however parking was still difficult, so I imagine the earlier you get there, the better. My favorite part was the view from the top of the lord’s tower and the mermaid door.

Starbucks mermaid gate was interesting. Rooftop offered an actual view of the winding river.

Super awesome castle that's a must see while in town. There is an audio guide link you can scan and listen to as you walk around. From here a few minutes drive to the beach to see Baluarte San Salvador and the beautiful sunset. Hopefully the city will clean up the Baluarte San Salvador area and preserve the historical significance of it.

From the outside and at the entrance we weren't expecting much but this is a great castle to explore! Lots of rooms with interesting maps! Make sure to climb the tower!

Great castle, and if you get to find the secret room you will see the plans when they aim to finish in 2036. Will be 5 star luxury for the wealthy folk like me!

Lovely setting however you have to pay 5 euro to have the privilege to be able to buy something from the bar/cafe on the island, so we left!

Beautiful and historic island which one can visit by taking a kayak or a boat. Nice place to go with friends and have a picnic. Don’t forget your sun-cream if you go during summer!

Not much to see here. When you go on monday when "entrance is free", also the single bar and the building are closed. We won't go a second time.

First and foremost, the island, the history, the atmosphere and the view are all mesmerizing, the boat ride to the island is pleasant as well. However, the website itself is a bit misleading. We booked the sunset trip from 19.30-22.30, giving you near 3 hours on the island. The website advertises two beaches, but access to both was closed, meaning we brought our beach / swim gear in vain. Also, the restaurant advertised on the website only serves potato salad and crisps, while we thought we'd have dinner on the island. We had a great time, but left very hungry as many guests did: we met a dozen of them at the pizza take out place nearest to the port. All by all, definitely worth the trip, but bring food / and or eat prior.

Beautiful track, really worth it! You can walk in a circle, when you reach the botanical garden be careful not to walk down, there is a sign that you have to go down, but that’s directing you to a local bar. The gardens are closing @1500.

We loved this short route. We did it by road bikes (bad idea, we had to carry them most of the way) but it's a medium difficult path on foot. And the possibility of cooling yourself in the brook is exceptional! Just please take your garbage with you!

Awesome trail along the stream (officially a river) from Benamahoma to El Bosque, about 10 km round trip. The trail is shaded along much of it's route which helps keep it cool even on a hot day (is was 30+ degrees when we walked it but with the shade it was fine). There are some rocky sections and stone stairs so you need to be in reasonable shape but in general an easy trail.

Nice and easy walk, very refreshing with a lot of shade. We were told that it can be very busy during the Weekends, so we went on Thursday and we didn't see many people there.

We visited in April. No lineups. Well worth the 2 euros to walk through. You can climb to the very top and see for miles. Olvera is a fantastic town to stay for a few nights.

The best 2 euros that I ever spent! The museum was well prepared and well explained although is only available in Spanish, but with google translate you’ll get well explained history about Olvera. Definitely a hidden gem place in a hiddeb gem city 🏙️ The castle view was worth it every penny.

The town and the castle are beautiful. There were lots of parking spots to park your car. It takes about 10 mins to walk from the parking spot to the castle. The views from the top of the castle were spectacular. There is also a church across the castle. Both the church and the castle have separate tickets - 2 euros per person. You can skip the church. There is also a small garden in the city which is nice. They had some birds in cages (which is sad) and different tropical plants. It's a nice small town to walk around.

Very nice visit! You need the guide to tell all the interesting stories. He speak only Spanish. The tour covers the history, how to color the leather and to work it. Many examples of craftsmanship and a small demonstration.

There are some fine examples of leather work, well worth seeing, but not a word of explanation in Spanish or English, possibly due to the leather manufacturer's quest for secrecy of their processes.
