Another stunning beach in Sri Lanka that is a must to see. The beach was clean, and the waves were soothing to see. However, it is better to ask for directions from the locals as Google Maps may not be entirely accurate.
Very nice beach, but not adjacent to any hotel. Clay underwater allows us to go far into the waves. It is lacking serious touristic backed, but still worth it

Old mansion built by a wealthy person. Now functioning as a tourist attraction and a male children home. Entrance tickets are cheap and parking available inside the premises. The guide will give you a tour with the history of this place. All this will take around half an hour to 1 hour.
Richmond Castle, Kalutara – Review Richmond Castle is one of the most beautiful and historically fascinating places to visit in Sri Lanka. Located in Kalutara, this elegant mansion showcases a mix of British and Indian architectural styles, surrounded by lush greenery and calm gardens. The castle’s design, with its tall pillars, detailed carvings, and wide verandas, gives a glimpse into the luxury lifestyle of the early 1900s. The environment is peaceful and well-maintained, making it a perfect spot for photography, family visits, or anyone interested in history and architecture. The staff is friendly and provides interesting background stories about the castle and its owner, Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. Inside, visitors can explore the grand staircase, wooden floors, and antique furniture that reflect the colonial era’s charm. The surrounding garden and the scenic view of the Kalu River add extra beauty to the visit. Overall, Richmond Castle is a must-visit heritage site in Kalutara — a place filled with history, beauty, and a calm atmosphere. 🌿
Richmond Castle is one of the most beautiful and historically rich places I’ve visited in Sri Lanka. The architecture, inspired by an Indian mansion, is stunning with its intricate woodwork, large windows, and elegant design. The entire property feels peaceful, surrounded by lush greenery and a calm atmosphere. The tour inside the mansion is well-organized, and the guides are friendly and knowledgeable. They share fascinating stories about the history of the castle and its original owner, Don Arthur de Silva Wijesinghe Siriwardena. It truly feels like stepping back in time. The gardens are well maintained, making it a perfect spot for photography and a relaxing walk. The entrance fee is reasonable, and the experience is absolutely worth it. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Kalutara—whether you love history, architecture, or simply want a quiet, scenic place to explore.
It is a historically significant place with some of Europe's best architecture. It has a unique natural air cooling system, old Sri Lankan architectural technology, and more. You must visit this location to observe more.
A peaceful spot with historical charm Richmond Castle in Kalutara is a colonial-era mansion with a unique backstory. It takes about an hour to explore, though the upper floor is currently closed for repairs. Tickets are Rs. 100 for locals. The surrounding garden is quiet and breezy, with a nice view of the Kalu Ganga river nearby. Built around 1900 by Mudaliyar Don Arthur de Silva, the mansion features British and Indian architectural styles, inspired by a palace he saw in India. If you’re visiting Kalutara, it’s definitely worth a quick stop to enjoy a bit of history and nature.
13.09.2025 For an entrance ticket of 100 Rs for adults and 50 Rs for kids, this place is definitely worth visiting. The magnitude of this castle amazes the visitors and the staff is very welcoming with their informative guidance throughout the Palace. If you are around Kalutara this is a must visit place. It seemed to be not of good condition at present thus hoping they will make arrangements to repair some places that seemed to be breaking down inside the castle. The architecture and how natural resources have been utilised maximally is unbelievable. There is the Kalu river by the side and there is a playing area for the kids too.
Richmond Castle is a truly serene and beautiful place with a fascinating and poignant history. This Edwardian mansion, completed in 1910, was built by Mudalivar Don Arthur de Silva Wiiesinghe Siriwardena. He was inspired by a palace in India, and after being told he couldn't replicate such a grand structure in Sri Lanka, he had local architects secretly draw up the plans. The result is a breathtaking blend of British and Indian styles, featuring imported teak wood from Burma, stained glass from Scotland, and a unique natural ventilation system in the ballroom. With 99 doors and 34 windows, the interior architecture is absolutely awesome. It's said that the marble statues of infants in the garden were placed there as a tribute to the Mudaliyar and his wife 's unfulfilled dream of having a child. The peaceful atmosphere and beautifully maintained garden make it a truly tranquil ana visually stunning experience. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a place rich with history and architectural grandeur

This is a nice place you can visit and have a bath if you are visiting around Kalutara. We just checked the places nearby when we exited the Dodangoda highway exit before we reached to our hotel. Since we had time we thought to take a look, and it was great then we expected. We can park the car on the parking area available, and walk for few meters to reach there. There are different levels of this water fall, and we went only to two levels only since it was bit tough to reach to the next levels with our kid.
Located close to Dodangoda. 35min from Horana. We went there around 1 PM. So it was very hot and sunny and the Rock was literally burning our feet!!! 🔥🔥 The waterfall is about 300m far from the parking. A Grandma collects rs. 200 parking fee for a car and no one can escape from her 🌚🌚 Perfect for a bath in its natural pool. The falls flow like in 2–3 layers from top to bottom... absolutely worth the visit! 👌❤️💧
When we visited, there was no water due to the dry season. This place is beautiful when it rains, and the surroundings are great too.
It’s a nice waterfall situated in between Rubber trees. You can take a hike to up to view more spots to bath. Recommended for families too. Parking too available at the site.
A beautiful waterfall that breaks into several parts. During the rainy season, it is dangerous to take a bath at the top. I have been here many times. But now people have polluted a lot. Empty alcohol bottles, bite packets, polythene in many places. Please protect such watershed ecosystems. Bring back everything you carry.
Nice place have a safe bath. Can take children bus there are so many rocks so need some guidance. Water is really clean and cool. You may not be able to reach very near by a vehicle. You have to walk roughly 300m on a flat surface. Little bit crowded on holidays. Had a wonderful time with my family over there.
Best place for bathing natural water at mathugama area.you can find lot of natural pools at the place.at the top there is a pond and two cottages, but road is too difficult to travel.also there are lot of leaches at the rainy days.at weekend there are lot of people around the place. please be careful and be kind to clean the environment.
Thudugala Ella is a beautiful water fall easily accessible by the highway. The location is very beautiful but it can get very crowded during the weekend and holidays. I've noticed a built of garbage at the site so please be careful not to leave behind waste when you visit.

Cave temple where prehistoric human remains were found, now home to a large reclining Buddha statue.

Loved viewing the enormous cave. I felt too little when inside. Can't determine how big it's by seeing in naked eye.
Pahiyangala, the largest cave in Asia, is situated at Bulathsinhala in the Kalutara District. It is a two hour drive from Colombo through the Piliyandala-Horana Road and covers a distance of about 40 Km. The road is motorable up to the foot of the rock. Pahiyangala gets its name from the famous Chinese traveller monk, Fa Hein who came to Srilanka.
Known as one of the largest natural rock caves in Asia. The peaceful surroundings, panoramic views, and the mix of history and nature make it a rewarding visit for both history lovers and adventure seekers.
Very large natural rock cave. Deep excavation done to find prehistoric human remains and equipments. Safe bathing place in the nearby river .
This is a natural rock cave set in the middle of the mountain. And this the biggest natural rock cave in the country. Archaeologists have unearthed remains of ancient primates who lived there 37000 years ago. Also they have found various other artifacts which reveals the details of the ancient civilisation. The cave it self is huge and no water will come inside even in the worst storm or rain. There is a temple there which is few hundred years old and the drawings were done using colour paint fashioned from various tree barks and part .
One of the greatest archaeological site in Sri Lanka belongs to prehistoric era. You can easily go there using public transport or from your own vehicle. Road conditions are good except narrowness. Previously you can climb the rock using the footpath next to the cave. Unfortunately, path was closed now. Place was very well maintained and information center is available at the temple.
Its an archeological site which was located on provincial boundry. And also, it is a south asia's largest cave which's on couldron. Cool and beautiful site to visit and can learn lot of things on ancient culture and ancient man in srilanka. A local guide represents in the cave and he will helps you. After the climbing stone stairs you can enter to the cave.Budhdha stratues are located inside of the cave and can worship freely. Can park your vehicle near the temple or car park.
Ancient place, and Buddhist trample, Fa Hien Cave, also Pahiyangala Cave, is situated in the district of Kalutara, Western Province, Sri Lanka and according to a rural legend, named after an alleged resident during historical times, namely Buddhist monk Faxian. However, there is no archaeological or historical evidence to support this legend. Wikipedia

The tattoo studio was conveniently located on my way to my accommodation, which is how I discovered it. After reading reviews, checking out the studio, and speaking with the owner, Anuruddha Kaushal Dankoluwage, I also took a look at his work on Facebook and Instagram. Everything was overwhelmingly positive, so we decided to schedule an appointment, even on short notice. I had two tattoos done: one as a memento of my time in Sri Lanka and the other a long-held wish of mine. Anuruddha brought my ideas to life almost overnight, enhancing them in ways I hadn’t imagined. I watched as he meticulously prepared the studio, and I must say, it was impeccably hygienic. He is incredibly laid-back, reliable, and trustworthy. I am extremely satisfied with his work and am grateful to have chosen him for my tattoos. I wish him and his studio continued success—please keep up the great work! Thank you so much! I highly recommend him to anyone looking for quality tattoo artistry.
I visited West Coast Tattoo, during a recent family holiday to Sri Lanka. 7 of us wanted tattoos and one of my daughters wanted her ears pierced. Despite the volume of work, kaushal arranged for personal consultations for each of us, opening up the shop until late and went through each design, with each of us, meticulously- making sure that we were all happy and knew exactly what we were getting. The shop itself is literally the most hygienic and chilled place tattoo shop that that I've ever been. And I've been to many! His attention to hygiene and customer care is second to none and I cannot thank him enough for the effort, time and skills that he gave to me and my family. We are all so so happy with what he did for us, especially my daughter who will always have the fondest memories of having her first piercings at West Coast tattoos. We will meet again ✌️💙🇱🇰
This tattoo is so much more than just ink - it's a piece of my heart! West Coast Tattoo truly captured the essence of my family. The intricate details and subtle shading far exceeded my expectations. I was impressed with the artist's dedication to hygiene. He meticulously cleaned the area, sanitized all equipment, and even offered advice on aftercare to prevent infection and provided a gel to apply. He also applied a protective sticker to shield the fresh tattoo for about 10 hours. With 11 years of experience, it's clear that West Coast Tattoo provides not only exceptional artistry but also a safe and professional environment. I highly recommend them!
Got a tattoo in Sri Lanka by Anuruddha and it was an amazing experience from start to finish! He’s incredibly skilled, patient, and pays great attention to detail. The studio was spotless and the whole process felt safe and professional. Anuruddha made sure the design was exactly how I wanted it and the final result turned out even better than I imagined. Couldn’t recommend him enough if you’re looking to get a meaningful piece done while in Sri Lanka!
Everything you could wish for! Annurudha is a wonderful tattoo artist who truly cares about you, from design to execution. He is incredibly professional, helpful, and friendly. He works gently on the skin, is patient, and pours his heart into his work. Cleanliness is impeccable—from the first glance, you know you're in a safe place. From the initial email to the appointment, everything was quick and easy. I'm very satisfied with my tattoo. I will definitely come back! :)
I visited West Coast Tattoo Studio whilst on holiday with my family. There were 7 of us that had tattoos so it took the whole day. Anuruddha was fantastic. He is clearly an expert at what he does, a professional. The hygiene was brilliant, I knew I would be safe. The tattoo I chose was a combination of two which wasn't an issue and Anuruddha designed it beautifully. I'm really happy with how it turned out. I would highly recommend.
5 Stars! My husband and I recently got tattoos done by Kaushal at West Coast Tattoo, and we couldn’t be happier with the experience! Kaushal is a truly talented, creative, and dedicated artist who clearly takes great pride in his craft. His attention to detail, cleanliness, and commitment to a hygienic environment made us feel completely at ease throughout the process. We’re so pleased we found him and are absolutely thrilled with our tattoos. If you’re considering getting inked, we highly recommend visiting Kaushal—you won’t be disappointed. Thank you so much, Kaushal.
In Sri Lanka for a vacation, I heard about this parlor thanks to our correspondent Fram. I made an appointment for yesterday, and the session lasted seven hours, but the result is exceptional. The parlor is very reliable, they follow hygiene rules carefully, and the tattoo artist is top-notch. You can go there with complete confidence. Thank u again 🙏🏻
