We normally go to EL&N, however their recent food hygiene rating has put us off, so we thought we’d try somewhere new. Firstly, the general ambience is rather grubby and downmarket: the tables were tacky, the singular a toilet an afterthought and everywhere looked like it needed a good scrub. We had to wait for a table (no problem), however it was almost impossible to catch anyone’s eye, so the whole process was unclear. When we were seated, we were given some rather tired and shabby menus which immediately adhered themselves to the surface of the table. Not to be deterred, we made our choice from the limited selection of pastries and cakes available. I chose the passionfruit cruffin which had seen better days and was still dripping in cooking fat. It was far from the light and delicate laminated pastries that I have tried at artisan bakeries and I felt rather let down. We noticed that the general atmosphere was unfriendly, I suspect that this was partly due to the staff’s fantastic ability to avoid eye contact at all times. Even my daughter noted that she had not seen a single member of waiting staff actually smile during the entirety of our visit. Needless to say, we won’t be returning.

The coffee smelt quite bad when it arrived, had a very strong acidic vinegar smell and tasted even worse, very acidic like it was gone off. I took 2 sips and was unable to drink any more, it was easily the worst coffee I've ever had. We were very confused and wondering if it was just us because everyone else seemed to be drinking their coffee and the reviews about the coffee are very good. We were hopeful that the food would redeem the bad coffee, however it was not what we were expecting at all. We were expecting egg on toast with some cheese on top but we got some very lightly toasted bread with a cold boiled egg cut in half and a block of cheese. Very odd, it's like we had to make it ourselves and it wasn't very tasty. Also just a single cold egg for £8 is very poor value for money. Overall very disappointing and again we were quite confused because all the reviews are good.

However, since they expanded the bakery, it’s just become chaotic. They’ve lost some nice staff due to not accommodating for the expansion. For example, they should have made a separate coffee bar so that there is space for a bigger coffee machine for at least 2x staff to focus on hot drinks. 1 poor staff member sweating over trying to make the whole bakery’s coffees and all the takeaway drinks. Freeing up space by having a separate drinks making space would allow for more space in the front for 2x tills as there are cues now. Only 1x till also means that another staff member is stuck by themselves dealing with orders, takeaways and all the online orders. The staff honestly look quite stressed, I really feel for them. Especially as they are so nice to me, and a few of the female staff I get on well with. Once this is addressed it would be back to 5 stars as a rating! Other than that, the bakery items are good quality, food is really nice, creative flavours although quite pricey these days. I would not want to pay more if the prices went up further. The coffee is also quite nice and I really like the in house creations such as the miso caramel which you can also buy in store!

I am very disappointed because the coffee cake is my ultimate favourite and was planning to have it as soon as I get home. It’s appalling to say the least because the lady who sort it out didn’t even say hello nor thank you. She couldn’t even bothered to smile. So what do you expect. The fact that I travelled from Solihull to Kings Heath just to buy all these and yet I was given a poor service is beyond shocking. Can you imagine my disappointment?

Would be nice to have the option for the croissant warmed. The site does have a toilet. However, the cafe is situated in the centre of their car park, with lots of traffic moving around. Young children need to be kept under close eyes due to the cars. The parking bays also aren't labelled, which led to some interesting parking, making navigating the car park quite difficult. I had very pleasant interactions with staff and had no problem with any individual at all. BUT their systems are NOT good. The first sign of a problem was that I never received a confirmation email for my expensive 3-night booking. I ended up booking twice because I thought I must not have booked it. I sorted it out after a lengthy phone call, but I never, at any point received an automatic email. This is clearly a huge problem. Then there were a few other minor issues. The room wasn't ready when we arrived and our check in was delayed for nearly an hour. We did get a voucher for the bar while we waited, but ...not ideal. And finally, and very importantly, the WiFi was genuinely terrible. People told me they didn't even realise it was gluten free. Everybody also said how delicious the cupcakes were. I ordered a cake for my friend's birthday last Tuesday for today. and it did not show up.
