I did not realize that Malcom X was a Nebraska native until I visited this Museum which is located in the heart of Omaha Nebraska black community. I was really impressed with all the interesting and fascinating collections it contains in such a small space. It was a pleasure to talk to the community owner and director. He’s a very knowledgeable, down to earth, and personable man. The are a plethora of other black businesses in the surrounding area of this museum. If you are ever in Omaha, I highly recommend paying your local African American museum a visit. It was worth the commute from the opposite side of Omaha near Offutt AFB. The area is well maintained and I felt safe. My training instructors discouraged students from going this part of town, but knew that it was possibly due to preconceived notions and assumptions about the actual community and its inhabitants. I had already convinced myself that I was going to that side of town because I wanted to check out the Black American museum and I am super glad that I went. I was able to meat some of the people and support local black businesses in that area. I was also able to enjoy a few of the entertainment venues frequented by blacks in that area. The people were friendly and hospitable. I had no regrets nor disappointments about visiting that area. The museum director assured me that the area was deemed safe. At the end of the day, I always exercise my common sense, street smarts, sound judgment, and discernment to decipher whether an environment, situation or person is safe enough for my presence. It was truly a pleasure to see the museum’s collection and learn what I didn’t know about Nebraska’s history. Don’t miss out. Don’t pass this place up. Don’t take places like this for granted.
