Scenic spot
John Ford Point, named after the renowned film director who used Monument Valley as a backdrop for many of his Western movies, offers visitors sweeping vistas of the rugged buttes and desert landscape. Perched on a plateau at the edge of Monument Valley, this iconic spot provides a breathtaking panoramic view that includes recognizable formations such as The Mittens - East Mittens, West Mittens, and Merrick Butte.
Just Amazing.... no words can describe the scene! It is a once in a lifetime experience. Definitely pay the $8 per person to drive around the valley. SUV is preferable for self drive, if not take the tour. Sunset is not necessary but sunrise is a must, but then you have to stay over at the View Hotel. Its expensive, but worthwhile once in your lifetime. If you stay at the View Hotel, it doesn't matter what room you have, they all have a great view.

Calm Scenic Peaceful. Truly one of the most beautiful places. Not a National park, rather rightly owned and inhabited by native Navajo members. They graciously give tours and share their history.
Kristy — Google review
About all I can say about this one is that it was incredible and a must stop if you do the Monument Valley drive. Definitely worth the $20 for the horse picture on the point.
Shane T — Google review
Excellent scenery. Stopped here to get my photo where John Wayne was. Was disappointed it had a fence .. Wished it had an open spot to at least get a mock shot or had other points just blocked off. Very rough road to get there but worth it
Rodney B — Google review
Legend has it that this was where John Ford would enjoy the view watching the sunset with his whiskey ! There is a little food stand with a fry bread. Recommend if you stop here on the tour get out first and take your photos before the rest of the group gets there, unless you like random people in your photos. 😜
James J — Google review
Amazing location for photography. Sadly the horse wasn't about during my visit. The road to the point is pretty awful but I managed it in a Mustang without getting stuck or damage. Just have to go really slow and avoid the big holes
Christian R — Google review
Awesome experience. A definite bucket list item. The Navajo people are very pleasant and kind.
MegaTorinoman — Google review
Always a perfect picture place. Monument Valley never disappoints. On self tours with your own vehicleake sure it is high enough to go over some ruts. But, we e been going here every year for 40 years and they continue to add improvements making the road easier to drive but still not take away from this historic place and it's atmosphere.

Hiking Trails
Wildcat Trail is a 3-mile loop located in the Monument Valley Tribal Park. The trail starts near the Navajo Tribal Park visitor center and offers picturesque views of West Mitten Butte, East Mitten Butte, Merrick Butte, and Sentinel Mesa.
Beautiful hike around mittens buttes. Relatively easy, walking on sand, trails well marked. Full sun. Hike back up in the sand to get to parking lot can be challenging this is the only hike you can do in the valley without a guide.
Kris M — Google review
A moderate hike filled with stunning views. I started mid afternoon to enjoy the afternoon sun illuminating the Mittens. It's a well-marked trail with several rest points with seating and shade.
Stewart C — Google review
In my humble opinion, the best activity in Monument Valley. You get to experience the buttes and landscape at your own pace up close and personal. It’s the only hike but it’s a really good one, once you get past the first 1km or so the trail gets quiet as most turn back. The views are incredible and you can take your time. I found on the tour we on,y got 5 mins in each location barely time to get a photo let alone to take it all in. It’s also free. Please though wear decent footwear for hiking and take water, we hiked in December, er and it still got warm.
Stuart W — Google review
After you take a car loop —you can drive small car to like I did -no problem make sure you take a hike there at wild cat trail !
Robak1977usa — Google review
A great walk (anti-clockwise) best setting off at sunrise (cool). Fairly steady walk, take water and you are walking in a hostile desert environment - Rattlesnake tracks seen in the sand! Cold drinks ($3 for one bottle or $5 for two) and an unmentionable toilet half way round.
Othc1989 — Google review
Smooth trail ✅ Breath taking view ✅ Spot a wild horse ✅ Bring some snacks and water and you're set! Wonderful trail! 🏜️
Christian O — Google review
My wife and I hiked the Wildcat Trail after driving the scenic route through the Monument Valley Tribal Park. We signed in on the clipboard at the desk on the lower level of the visitor center before heading to the trailhead. The trail starts from the parking lot. Taking this almost 4-mile trek afforded really amazing views of the two mitten buttes. We were much closer than when we were in the road and got to see both sides of the West Mitten. The first 2.5 miles of the trail were pretty easy since they were mostly downhill or on level ground. There were 3 or 4 shelters providing shade at irregular intervals on the trail. There was also a bench in the shade of a tree once. These were helpful since there is little respite from the sun. The temps were in the mid-80s when we did this in early June. The best unexpected treat was a primitive bathroom just after the 2-mile mark. The final mile is back up the hill. There are some sandy spots, but the trail is mostly hard-packed. It is well-marked. We took about 2.5 hours.

A must do while visiting Monument Valley ! Pure Serenity! Great views of the Monuments here . Took around 2 hrs to complete . This is one of the only trails you can access without a guide . Very convenient while staying in the cabins . This Trail was a gorgeous experience. Magestic!

Nature & Parks
Goosenecks State Park in Utah offers breathtaking views of the San Juan River as it winds through deep canyons, creating stunning meanders that reveal millions of years of geological history. The park features hiking trails and impressive rock formations, making it a must-see stop on a road trip through the Southwest. Located near other attractions like Valley of the Gods and Monument Valley, Goosenecks State Park is an ideal place to immerse yourself in the natural beauty of this region.
Absolutely stunning location. Beautiful sunset and sunrise. Honor system to pay, cash in envelope or scan QR code to pay the $10/night fee. There were a few sites still available for us to camp when we arrived an hour before sunset, in early Sept. Ground is rough rock so definitely bring your sleeper pads if you tent camp on the ground like we did. Facilities were stinky and full of angry flies. Absolutely positively do not use a white flashlight at night if you need to use the restroom here 🪰+ 👄 = 😭 Otherwise, this is my top 3 campsite, ever! 10/10 recommend.
Abby R — Google review
This location is more of a large scenic overlook than a traditional park. Despite its small size, it provides day-use areas and overnight dry camping spot. Visitors will find it easy to access, clean, and offering spectacular views.
A ( — Google review
Camping is $10.00 a night 2 night max is on display. Rock fire rings and pit toilets. Water faucet is next to ranger station. Pack in pack out. Day use is to right camping is to left. Did see car campers come in after Ranger left and leave before ranger started in morning. There is an honor iron ranger for after hours. No thrills camping but camping here is beautiful. You can camp right on the rim with a long drop down.
Duane C — Google review
Well not sure if it qualifies to be a state park but the view was great. Road to get here was pretty smooth and is newly built. They do charge $5/ vehicle and the view is like 200 m from tge booth. It is a small place but worth visiting to get it off the list.
Mohit G — Google review
Stunning! Paved road until campground, it then becomes gravel but good condition. Campground has more than 8 spaces to park rv, in fact it can take as many as you can find space to park as it goes around the rim of the cliff.
Angie L — Google review
Really pretty place to stop. Easy to access if you're traveling between the Canyonlands and Monument Valley. We didn't plan for much time here, but would love to go back, especially at night! Looks like an amazing place to do some stargazing and astrophotography. Good camping right along the rim and nice views of the San Juan River.
Lynne S — Google review
Great stop along our roadtrip. $5 day use fee. $10 fee to camp. Totally worth it either way. The entry fee collector was cute. " its just a lookout, nothing else" there are toilets at the look out. It was just a lookout, but a beautiful one!

In February 2025, we visited Goosenecks State Park in Southeastern Utah, near Mexican Hat, Utah. The natural scenery at Goosenecks is amazing, as the San Juan River has cut a meandering path through the limestone rock for a geologic quantity of time. In February, the temperature at Goosenecks was in the pleasant 70s, and it was not too crowded. Utah is full of amazing scenery and natural wonders, and Goosenecks State Park is yet another example of the rugged and magnificient Utah natural scenery.

5Forrest Gump Point

Forrest Gump Point, located in Monument Valley, Utah, offers a stunning view of the buttes within the tribal park. This spot gained fame from its appearance in the movie 'Forrest Gump.' Visitors can recreate the iconic scene of Forrest running up the highway. It's advisable to visit in the morning for better lighting and fewer crowds. However, be cautious of distracted drivers and tourists stopping to take photos along the road.
Absolutely breathtaking views! The drive was long and boring since there’s not much else out there but definitely worth the beauty you end up at. We went Memorial Day weekend so it was very busy at the main area so we pulled up to the other area where there was a lot less people for some better, stranger free pictures
Nicole A — Google review
One of the best moments during our road trip, we wanted so much to get here and just stand on the Forrest Gump Point to enjoy the view. Amazing feeling! Some drivers are a bit nervous when you sit too long in the middle of the street, but it is worth to stay a little longer to make the wallpaper photo of your life:)
Ania — Google review
You drive a ways with no vehicle in front or behind you thinking you & your group might be the only ones but when you make that last turn & look in the distance, you can see more people than you expect. I heard the early morning (sunrise) is the best time when the foot traffic is low, but again it is a hit or miss on what days may be favorable. Only giving a low star review because everyone didn’t just take a picture & then get out of the way, they stayed for a long time. We only took a few pictures then left. I was able to edit the photos partially but the videos we took i am unable to remove the people in the background. It’s nice, but just be aware of extra people around. Next time we visit, i will definitely arrive before the sun rises.
Michael A — Google review
We drove from Arizona to see the Momument Valley and did not know of this exact location called Forrest Gump Point. We were struggling to find the exact famous view, our patience was paid off when we drove pass this monument to the Utah side. It was so beautiful. Be careful of coming cars, the road is straight so you can easily see cars coming from both sides. When you see there is no cars coming in a long distance, and it’s safe to do so, go and take your pics with this iconic road.
Karis L — Google review
This now iconic location is approximately 7 miles from the small town of Mexican Hat, Utah. Here is where you will be able to take stunning photos of Monument Valley, unfortunately for us, we drove right into a massive sandstorm, which lasted all day. This place can get awfully busy with crowds of visitors all trying to get that perfect photo in the middle of the road. Please, watch yourself if you are running out into the roadway, since people fly down this road. There is a pull-out further south along the east side of the road.
Thomas B — Google review
You can’t miss this iconic place if you’re in arizona. Absolutely loved it. Visit before sunset so that you can take good pictures with natural light.
Atika H — Google review
While traveling from Page,AZ to Bluff on a cross country road trip stopped to see Forrest Gump point. As others have mentioned not much traffic until we got here. Too many people were at the ideal spot shown in the movie so we went up the road a short distance to get our pictures and take in the view. Worth the effort to see it, just couldn’t get close to the ideal spot.
Rich T — Google review
Touristy as hell? Yes! But when in Mexican Hat, why not join the throngs of tourists who brave a fun selfie or two in the middle of US-163? There are a couple of parking pull-offs as well as signage encouraging motorists to beware of pedestrians, making it easier to go for the Gump glory.

If you're visiting Monument Valley, don't miss out on the iconic formations known as The Mittens and Merrick Butte. These majestic rock structures resemble mittens and a butte without a thumb, offering a stunning sight that showcases nature's artistry. The best view of the valley can be enjoyed from this vantage point, allowing visitors to marvel at these spectacular sculptures created by natural forces over time.
Nature is the best artist. Living proof is here.
I P — Google review
The West and East Mitten Buttes (also known as the Mittens) are two buttes in the Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park in northeast Navajo County, Arizona. When viewed from the south, the buttes appear to be two giant mittens with their thumbs facing inwards. This two buttes rise 1,000 ft above the valley floor below. According to Navajo legend, they are the carcasses of long-defeated monsters. The buttes are made of red sandstone and are isolated hills with steep sides and a flat top. The buttes have been exposed over the eons as the valley has been eroded. Wildcat trail is a hiking trail that circles the Western Mitten Trail that is around 4 miles.

The Monument Valley Tribal Park Visitor Center is a must-visit destination on the West Coast, renowned for its natural beauty and cinematic history. Immortalized by director John Ford in his film 'Red Shadows,' this iconic landscape features the famous John Ford Point observation spot. To enter the park, there's an admission fee of $5 for adults, while children under 7 can enter for free. The visitor center offers amenities such as restrooms, a restaurant, exhibits, and souvenir shops.
A must-visit stop with breathtaking views—especially stunning at sunset. The viewpoint alone is worth the visit, offering iconic panoramic scenes of the valley. There is an entrance fee, but it gives you access to the main lookout and facilities. The souvenir shop inside is excellent, with a wide range of authentic items and gifts. Whether you’re just passing through or staying longer, the center is the perfect introduction to Monument Valley’s beauty and history.

Great spot to visit. It is $8.00 per person to enter. Parking is plentiful and paved so that is a huge plus. Great gift shop with souvenirs as well as handmade Native American items. The views alone are well worth the price of admission. There is a drive around the valley, but we did not attempt it on fully loaded motorcycles.

Beautiful! Some of the dirt road is rough . We have a jeep so no troubles. Well worth the trip. Says about 2 to 4 hours. I think we were there at least 5 hours. Local people selling art and jewelry. Very serene peaceful and spiritual natural area. Admire and respect the land.

This is the Indogeous people of the US, - The Dine' or Navajo. They are wonderful people. Its long overdue that we support them in anyway we can. On top of that, the views are spectacular. And they have a small but wonderful museum here, w information about the Vode Talkers. Highly recommend

The Monument Valley Tribal Visitor Center is an excellent starting point for exploring one of the most iconic landscapes in the world. The staff were welcoming, knowledgeable, and patient with every question. They provided clear information about road conditions, scenic viewpoints, and guided tour options, which really helped us plan our route. The center itself is clean, well-organized, and offers stunning panoramic views right from the balcony. The cultural exhibits and local artistry add depth to the experience, making it more than just a stop — it’s an introduction to the Navajo Nation’s history and traditions. Highly recommend beginning your visit here.

Well, let’s split this review in two parts: First: Monument Valley itself: It’s absolutely gorgeous!! You’ve seen it in the movies and now you can see it live. Absolutely fantastic and a must-see from my point of view! Second: What the Navajo tribe is doing: I’ve been to Monument Valley many times - and there are a few things that are just not okay. 1. The road through the valley is absolutely terrible! It has been for the past 25 years and it seems to me as if NOTHING is being done! I don’t expect a concrete paved road - but at least a road where I don’t have to be afraid my car is broken afterwards. You can really tell the difference between a NP and a park that is run by the tribes. 2. The Navajo want to make money out of EVERYTHING. On one of the view points in the valley drive you could also go horse riding. Well, the horses are standing there, waiting for customers. If you wanna take pictures of the horses, they urge you to give tip! I mean… WHAT?!? I should pay for taking a picture of an animal? What the heck? Then there is a very nice rock, perfect for taking picture with people standing on it. Years ago that was no problem. Now, you can’t go out there anymore, there is a fence. But you can sit on a horse on that very location and take a photo yourself for $20!! What a rip-off! Some Asian family did it and paid almost $100 dollars for the entire family to have their photo taken. Disgusting! 3. I’m super sorry to say that, but the Navajo were not too friendly to us. Whether it was in the gift shop or elsewhere in the park. What a pity. Friendliness is free and makes life nicer for everyone.
Lobo M — Google review
Compact building at the park entrance. There are exhibits on Navarrese culture, geology is presented there, and there is also a souvenir shop with jewelry, pottery, etc. The view from that spot is absolutely amazing.
Raoul — Google review
Drove 2 hours to Monument Valley wanted to see the rocks. Reached the entrance at 530pm local time on a Wednesday and was told all scenic drives were closed and if you want to enter the gift shop you can but it’s $8 per person. There were no signs online or on the way stating this fact so we thought we wasted a whole trip down. Read other reviews subsequently on Monument Valley View with similar experiences so we then went and took photos by the public drive which offers very nice views as well so there is no need to visit this park.

The property is located near Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, offering camping options at Gouldings Campground with various accommodation choices including tent sites, small cabins, and RV sites. The campground provides amenities such as an indoor pool, hot showers, playground, laundry facilities, convenience store, and Wi-Fi.
If you’re staying in Monument Valley, this is the place to stay! Incredibly friendly and welcoming service from check in/out, the restaurant, gift shop. It’s minutes from a grocery store and gas station and a few minutes drive to Monument Valley. Rooms were clean and spacious with beautiful views. A great patio to sit out on too! So happy with everything about our stay at Goulding’s Lodge.

The cottage we stayed in was most comfortable. Cottage was clean and neat upon arrival, with plenty of towels, utensils, etc. We used virtually all amenities: restaurant, laundry, grocery store and gas station. Food was well prepared and tasty. Service generally good and servers were most polite. Enjoyed the museums. The deluxe trip through Monument Valley was quite an experience: our guide/driver most helpful and answered many questions in a knowledgeable and pleasant fashion. Roads through the valley fair to quite poor; rough and bumpy ride. Bring water and sunscreen.

Beautiful historic location with restaurant, gas station and large grocery store.. Beautiful views depend on where you are though, we were in a cabin park with a kitchen and a separate bedroom about 500 meters away from the lodge which was nice but was not as clean as it should be..There is no view except for the cabins in the front row ofcourse. The restaurant is reasonable but unfriendly unfortunately.. Staff by the reception was welcoming! Also the museum which is about the lodge itself is very interesting! Overall great stay and I would still recommend it to anyone!

Goulding’s began as a trading post in the 1920s and now blends lodge, museum, cabins, RV & campground facilities. Prime location for Monument Valley access: It’s right on Navajo land near the Arizona–Utah border, giving guests close proximity to Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. Views are a major draw: Waking up to sweeping valley vistas and beautiful sunrises and sunsets. Good amenities for the remote setting. Pricing can feel steep, but that's your only option really. The lodge offers a small indoor pool (open year-round), a restaurant on-site (Stagecoach Dining Room), and tour services using Navajo guides (that was really awesome) . The rooms at the lodge where we stayed, are 2 room cabins with a kitchenette. It was a very pleasant experience Decent value given limited options in the area Because lodging options near Monument Valley are scarce, many guests feel the lodge is a compelling choice, despite its limitations.
Aditi B — Google review
The Gouldings Lodge is a motel that faces Monument Valley - every room with a view. By view, I mean the paintings and the photographs in the rooms and that you have seen online are now outside your window. The attached photo is from our room window. Forget that the rooms are very clean, that there is a pretty cool museum and a nice cafe steps away - that the room comes with a fridge and micro...whatever. You are staying in a historical location situated in a natural work of art. This could have been a tent and would have gotten 5 stars. This was anamazing stay - absolutely memorable!
Anthony P — Google review
The location deserves 7 stars. You'll never have a room with a view like this. Rooms are nothing fancy, but have all the essentials. Great shop, free museum, and restaurant on site. Very tasty food. Had homemade soup and fry bread. Also had excellent biscuits and gravy for breakfast. Wish they were in my town.

We were charged 30% for canceling our Saturday night, October 11, reservation. I called to cancel early Thursday morning because the weather forecast was stormy with lightening and flash floods. I asked if they could take less of a percentage because this was beyond our control. We didn't feel safe driving in an unfamiliar area under adverse conditions. The manager, Mona, said no. This was an indirect answer since she relayed the message and didn't come to the phone to talk to me personally. We are planning on rescheduling our vacation in a week or two. We will not, however, stay at Gouldings. In the planning stages of this vacation I called Goulding and was quoted a price. When I called back to make the reservation I was quoted a different price. When I called to confirm the price, I was given yet another price. At no time was I told that if I canceled I would be charged 30%. I was told I would lose my deposit of $27.27, if I cancelled. I understood that. Today, when I called I was quoted yet a different price. While on that call, while waiting to talk to manager Mona, when the girl (not Mona) came back to the phone it was another price. Yikes! Do they just pull numbers out of the air??? The initial price was $233.10. Today, I was told $293.80. Somewhere along the line I was given a 20% discount from Val. Today, that discount went to 10%, and I owed $293.80. Go figure. My suggestion is this: keep on looking for places to stay. If you do decide on Goulding get a price etched in stone. These people are in the hospitality business!

To catch sight of this impressive landmark, visitors should head to the John Ford viewpoint as it cannot be seen from the visitor center. This natural wonder is definitely worth a visit for some memorable photos and an awe-inspiring experience.
One of the first features that presents itself at Monument Valley on the scenic drive.

I went to Monument Valley during my vacation and I saw the Three Sisters. You can see it while you're driving on the trail and it is very conspicuous. There are also many more monuments after the Three Sisters.

Artist's Point is a stunning overlook that offers breathtaking views of West Mitten Butte, Merrick Butte, and East Mitten Butte. Visitors describe it as a dream come true and one of the most beautiful spots on the drive. The area is virtually empty, making it a peaceful and special place to take in the natural beauty. Due to limited capacity during the pandemic, there are no crowds, allowing visitors to fully appreciate the scenery.
A breathtaking experience at Artist's Point As soon as I arrived at Artist's Point in Monument Valley, I was absolutely blown away. The view from this point is truly breathtaking and worth every bit of the journey to get here. I rate this place 5 stars out of 5 because it exceeded all of my expectations. Visitors to Artist's Point can expect to be immersed in the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. The towering rock formations and sweeping vistas provide an awe-inspiring backdrop for any visit. The area is well-maintained, with easy-to-navigate walking paths and plenty of seating to take in the stunning views. One thing that sets Artist's Point apart from other viewpoints in the area is the unique perspective it provides. From here, visitors can take in panoramic views of some of the most iconic formations in Monument Valley, including the West and East Mitten Buttes, Merrick Butte, and the Totem Pole. I cannot find any faults with this place, and I would recommend it to anyone visiting Monument Valley. The only suggestion I have for improvement is to provide more informational signage, as there is so much history and culture to be learned about the Navajo people and their connection to this land. In conclusion, Artist's Point is an absolute must-visit for anyone traveling to Monument Valley. The views are unparalleled, and the experience is truly unforgettable. I am grateful to the staff and owners for maintaining such a wonderful place and would love to return in the future.

Artist’s Point is one of those stops in Monument Valley that really takes your breath away. The view is wide open and absolutely stunning, you get a full sweep of the valley, with the big buttes and mesas laid out like a painting. It’s quiet, peaceful, and feels a bit more removed from the usual crowds, which is a huge plus. The drive in can be a little rough if you’re not in a decent vehicle, but it’s manageable, and totally worth it. If you can catch it in the early morning or late afternoon, the lighting is incredible.

The Monument Valley Scenic Drive is not your typical drive; it's an extraordinary 17-mile journey that immerses you in one of the most distinctive landscapes in the United States. As you navigate this self-guided route, you'll encounter breathtaking vistas and iconic rock formations that are perfect for capturing stunning photographs. Each turn reveals a new perspective of this mesmerizing terrain, making it a must-do for any traveler seeking to experience the beauty of nature up close.
Wow! Just wow!! What an amazing drive!! One of the most beautiful places in the US! The drive took us two hours. We have a 4x4 truck. The road was rough. I don’t not recommend in a standard car. We watch people in a convertible attempt the road and have to turn around and then another minivan was spinning out. It cost $8 a person and they only take credit cards at the booth. There is a hotel and restaurant on the property and they would be worth staying to enjoy your time and watch the sunset.
Michelle B — Google review
We drive our Toyota Corolla in, we asked the administrator and he says yes we can go. I re really don’t recommend any car similar type to go in. The administration should realize the bad surface and risks of this road and forbidden any car which is not 4WD to go. The road is full of steep uphills and sharp rocks in several different parts, it will hurt the clearance and tire so much. If your car not suitable, you may take the tour bus in by spending some money, which is much less than the money you require for fixing your own car.
Hanhua G — Google review
Entry-level SUVs can handle the drive! Only the first part of the road is a bit scary, but it’s very short. I went around noon, though I think early morning or late afternoon would be better. Can anyone tell me if the pattern below is a petroglyph or naturally formed?

amazing views, and a beautiful red dirt drive. there was a sign saying 4x4 only but I took my kia soul and made the whole trip. would not recommend taking a low clearance vehicle if your not an experienced off road driver. In Monument Valley, the Totem Pole is a famous sandstone formation that stands tall and thin like its namesake. Carved by nature, it's a distinctive feature along the scenic drive, with a unique appearance that sets it apart from other formations in the area. Standing at 140 meters high and 12 meters in diameter, this mythical marker created by Northwestern tribes is an impressive sight to behold.

(Translated by Google) The Totem Pole is one of the most iconic formations in Monument Valley, located on the Arizona-Utah border. This slender peak, which rises approximately 137 meters in height, resembles a totem pointing towards the sky, hence its name. It is located in the lower part of the park, near the Yei Bi Chei rock formations, which resemble human figures. The Totem Pole is a geological wonder sculpted by millions of years of erosion, offering a breathtaking spectacle. The site is easily accessible via the Valley Drive, a 17-mile scenic drive through Monument Valley. Visitors can admire this impressive formation from a vantage point, offering a spectacular view of the surrounding valley. The Totem Pole is an ideal place for photography enthusiasts, especially at sunrise and sunset, when the light enhances the warm colors of the rocks. Although climbing the formation is now prohibited, it has been an attraction for climbers in the past. In summary, the Totem Pole is a must-see in Monument Valley, offering a unique experience for lovers of nature, geology and photography. It’s an awe-inspiring site that embodies the raw beauty of the American West. Hotel
Nestled within the serene Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park, The View Hotel offers a tranquil retreat with its unassuming rooms and cabins. As the first building upon entering the park, it lives up to its name by providing unparalleled vistas of the iconic Monument Valley from every room. Operated by the Navajo Nation and conveniently located adjacent to the Visitors Center, this hotel is renowned for its breathtaking views of the Left and Right Mittens, as well as Merrick Butte.
We stayed here for the Monument Valley Veterans Marathon and although the hotel is not affiliated with the race, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the View. We got a small room with no view (we were going to be running in said view) and it was very comfortable. We were able to sit in the comfortable lobby or the patio to take in the view as well. Food was good, I would highly suggest the green chili stew. Breakfast was great and provided an excellent pre-race fueling of oatmeal, eggs, sausage, coffee, orange juice, etc. Everyone was very kind and made us feel very welcome. You have to pay to enter the tribal park, but the hotel gives you a parking pass that makes it so you only have to pay the fee once. All their instructions were very clear on what you were paying for, so we were aware and prepared. Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here!
Anne C — Google review
We were able to check in a bit earlier than expected, which was a nice start. The room itself was spacious, well maintained, and decorated with plenty of local touches. Everything was clean and the facilities were good, but the real highlight was definitely the view — it truly stole the show. On the downside, the overall atmosphere from the staff felt cold. People were polite, but not genuinely friendly or helpful. Unfortunately, when our rental car broke down, the lack of support became very clear. The rental company required an American phone number to send a message, yet none of the staff could provide one — something I found hard to believe, especially given how isolated the location is. It left us feeling stranded. Having worked in hotel reception myself, I know how important it is to go the extra mile for guests, but that was not the case here. The trading post also deserves mention — prices were significantly higher than anywhere else we visited (two to three times more expensive), and the $20 voucher offered didn’t make much of a difference. It feels like part of the room rate is built to support it. The food, unfortunately, was exceptionally poor quality and incredibly expensive for what it was. Overall, the view and the room were strong positives, but the lack of warmth and guest support — especially in difficult situations — along with overpriced, subpar food, left a lasting negative impression.
Yevgeniya S — Google review
Anywhere else, this would be a solid mid-range hotel entry. But we're all here for the view. The desk staff were friendly and helpful. There were a couple of nice touches in room. I appreciated the large bath towels and the navajo blanket was nice and warm when watching sunrise on the balcony on a cold morning. There is a stamp in the visitor center for your National Park passport. The Trading Post is a sizable gift shop, but really overpriced. The restaurant staff was prompt and friendly, but the food is mediocre at best and overpriced. Improving the restaurant would make this a 5 star overall for me. I've now stayed here twice and will keep coming back whenever I can make it back to Monument Valley.
Jessica N — Google review
Great location and outlook from the room, though a bit pricy and poor service levels. Comments: Great location and outlook from the room, though a bit pricy and the staff and service levels are significantly below what they should be for the price being charged. The restaurant is particularly poor with orders not being taken correctly and partially cold food is just an example of the poor service levels which need significant improvement. Outlook: Great outlook from the top floor to the iconic Monument Valley. Decor: Traditional native decor. Desk & electrical sockets: Adequate with accessible sockets below the desk. In-room safe: No. Breakfast: Basic American-style buffet with choices of cereal, some hot food, waffles, yoghurt, and brewed coffee – could do with a lot better choices given this is the only option and the price of the rooms.
Sidney D — Google review
We stayed here for the Monument Valley Veterans Marathon in mid November 2025 (which I highly recommend staying here if you plan on running that race in the future). The location is absolutely incredible. The service was great and all staff were very attentive. The breakfast is pretty standard as far as continental breakfasts go. I recommend any of the chilis or stews on the dinner menu.
William C — Google review
We stayed one night in a non view small room on the first floor. It was clean and cozy, with a single queen bed. As we were spending a lot of time in the park and seeing the landscape, we decided to go with a non view room and save the cost difference to put towards dinner. The hotel restaurant has great views, and the included breakfast had substantial offerings that included eggs, sausage and potatoes. We also ate at the restaurant for dinner, and the food was good but not exceptional. It was the standard burgers and basic salads. The prices were a tad higher than what you'd pay away from the park. The service was friendly at the restaurant. We didn't use the included $20 coupon for the gift shop, as we found everything to be inflated in price to what we'd seen elsewhere. We mainly stayed here for the location and convenience. The lobby is very pretty and was decorated for the holidays.
Robyn W — Google review
The view is absolutely stunning, and that’s truly the only reason this review isn’t lower. Unfortunately, for the price, the overall experience was very disappointing. The room felt quite dated, with a noticeable musty smell upon arrival. The carpet seemed old and dusty, and although the bed was fairly comfortable, the blanket was too thin, making the room cold at night. The bathroom was also very old-fashioned, which is hard to justify considering the high rate. The Wi-Fi connection was very poor, barely working during our stay, which added to the frustration. The included breakfast was another disappointment — limited selection and poor quality, definitely not what we expected. Everything was served on plastic plates and cups, which made the experience feel even cheaper. On top of that, we had to pay an additional $16 just to access the property. Additionally, we were unpleasantly surprised by the attitude of certain staff members, particularly at the Native American gift shop, where our simple question was met with an unfriendly and unprofessional response. They charge luxury hotel prices, but the experience doesn’t even come close to a low-end motel Overall, the view is breathtaking and worth seeing, but you can easily enjoy it without staying overnight at this hotel.
Lefebvre A — Google review
The view from view hotel room was absolutely stunning. They also have on site resturant. Check in was breeze. Parking spaces little narrow. The hotel common area has really nice sitting area with multiple comfortable couches, fire places and big windows for the view. Stunning View is pretty much from everywhere: room with balcony, common area, resturant, gift shop and outdoor viewing area. Room looked little old but they matched with similar aesthetics and was clean. Complimentary Breakfast was overall comparable to medium range hotels with scrambled eggs, sausage, potatoes and beans as warm option. You also get 20$ gift certificate for gift shop which applies only to handmade stuffs. It is inside the park so you have to pay 8$ per person at park entrance before reaching hotel. Overall this place is comparable to medium range hotel and extra you get is the stunning view.

Nestled in the heart of Monument Valley, The View Campground offers a unique experience for visitors seeking to immerse themselves in Navajo culture. Situated on the Navajo Reservation, this campground provides stunning views of the iconic Mittens and other rock formations. Guests can choose from cozy private cabins or set up camp at RV sites with no hookups or wilderness tent sites. The nearby trading post showcases beautiful Native American art, adding to the cultural experience.
This is the campground at The View Hotel in Monument Valley. On the booking site, the “Campground” option defaults to RV sites, not the tent area, and the entrance was hard to find at first. I saw some people setting up tents in the RV lot, but the views there are poor and blocked by restrooms and buildings. The tent campground is much better, with showers, $50/night (RV $80). I went in mid-September, and the nights were very comfortable around 20°C. If you’re in a tent, make sure you book the right site!

Too ridiculous… payed $84,75 for a parking plot. They say with a view but there’s a parking before the view. We we’re not allowed to choose our own spot. Most of the restrooms/ bathrooms were closed. Men’s bathroom had two toilets but one was out of order. Wifi only for cabin guests. It felt like we were camping next to a road because all the cabin guests kept driving back and forth, without speed limit, next to our spot. Not nice all the dust in your dinner… wouldn’t recommend this at all!

Stayed here for 1 night, requested a room on the front row but got one on the 2nd row. Kindda started off on a bad foot. Arrived after a 6.5hr drive at 3.15pm and was told check in was until 4pm literally made us wait when at 4 no one had left the cabins following cleaning so the room was ready at 3.15 but we just weren't allowed in. Also people came later than us/much later and got front row cabins. Room was small, did have a/c and a fridge but felt very cramped. Breakfast was free at the hotel but was awful. One of those places where once you seen it, saw the sun set and rise and drive the trail you don't really ever need to go back. Suppose it's different strokes for different folks but didn't get the friendliest vibes from anyone here.
Rob S — Google review
Unfortunately, one start from me. I was super excited about this place, too! It does not state online that you cannot have a dog with you in your RV while camping. Drove all the way there for nothing. I’m sure the views are beautiful if you’re camping. I did see the RV sites and they were stacked right next to each other and just a gravel lot. No fires allowed and you will be able to reach out and touch your neighbor, so I we probably dodged a bullet. The views looked epic, but the privacy that you’re going to have in your campsite is zero. I hope your neighbor is a good one 😂. I really wish they would’ve let the public know on their website that dogs are not allowed in your RV. The person at the desk was extremely dismissive and said that I should’ve been aware of it because the hotel doesn’t allow dogs. No refund. That doesn’t make sense to me because hotel rules are way different than campground rules, typically. I made the suggestion that they let it be known on the website so future campers do not have the same experience as me. His reply…“This is tribal land and we make the rules”.. I don’t have a problem with rules, I have a problem with not having the rules be known. I didn’t argue, I just left quietly. Luckily, I found a great campsite at Goulding a few miles away. Phew! . Absolutely beautiful! They were very kind, dog friendly, and epic views as well. I’m at the end of a 2 week road trip and thankfully this is the first negative encounter that I’ve had. Most folks are amazing! Safe travels y’all!
Tami F — Google review
Clearly, this campground is relying entirely on the (exceptional) view, because the rest is quite frankly awful for the price. There’s only one working toilet for men and two tiny showers, one of which doesn’t even have a hook for hanging clothes or a towel. The whole building looks like it hasn’t been maintained in years. The tent area is just a small patch of sand. Strangely, motorhome pitches come with their own tables (even though motorhomes are the least in need of one), while people with tents have absolutely nowhere to eat or prepare food. I also still haven’t managed to find the drinking water faucet. Staff is the least friendly I’ve encountered so far. We were four tents and somehow decided to cramp us all together instead of scattering us around the campground. If it weren’t for the view, this campground would be absolutely terrible. Good enough for just one night.
Andrea F — Google review
This is a parking spot on gravel with a picnic table more than a campground. And it's worth it for the location. The bathrooms and showers are great and so the 17 mile drive through the Navajo Tribal Park/Monument Valley. The views are indeed amazing.
Mara V — Google review
If you take into account just the position and the wonder you can apprecciate in the sunrise/sunset, 5 stars are not enough. But i completely agree with lots of other review I am reading below. The service is very inadeguate for the price paid. Starting from the website that needs a big improvement and the Booking experience that is completely stressfully (low information for the customer and difficult to understand about the results). Moreover, considering that this place host people from all the world, the staff could be more kindly, available and supportive. You are not just providing apartment. You are providing experience and all these things are (important) part of that.
Giovanni S — Google review
What a truly magical place. This is the camp spot I have been looking for in Monument Valley! I have driven thru this area a hand full of times and never realized that The Views campground really takes you right up to the Monuments, including the famous 'Mittens' Buttes that are so iconic and breathtaking. NO PETS ALLOWED. This is the only noteworthy reason to not visit this park. There are walking trails all around the Monuments and even some jeep tours that take you into this very spiritual and haunting landscape. If you are camping here I recommend choosing a site that is away from the bathhouse. There is some very bright lighting all around the building that interferes with the beauty of the dark night sky. If you are tent camping, be prepared for high winds. The wind whistled through this area day and night during our stay. The gift shop is fantastic. Very friendly staff and there is a patio where you can enjoy a Non-Alchoholic beverage and some snacks while looking right at the Buttes. There is no Electric/Water hookups, so it is nice to be equipped with solar on your rig if you want some of the comforts. Don't pass this up!

Hunts Mesa is a stunning red-tinted sandstone plateau in Monument Valley, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. Accessible only with an authorized Navajo guide, visitors can embark on hikes to see teardrop arches and take in the breathtaking scenery. The mesa provides one of the best vantage points for observing Monument Valley. Tours led by Navajo guides offer thrilling 4x4 rides to reach this private land, providing an unforgettable experience.
You have to experience this place for yourself, it's one of the best views in Arizona. If you like to off-road, there is the opportunity to take your own vehicle with Monument Valley Hunts Mesa Edition expedition. They are the only guides authorized to take people in their own 4x4s. If you want to just come along for the ride, you can ride in their 4x4 or UTV. Tell Skakey I sent you! He's the best guide!

The West and East Mitten Buttes are two iconic rock formations in Monument Valley, rising dramatically from the flat valley floor to over 6,000 feet above sea level. Resembling hands or mittens pointing towards the sky, these imposing buttes have been featured in Hollywood Westerns and even served as a backdrop for the HBO TV series Westworld. Believed to be spiritual guardians of the valley, these buttes are a sight to behold and hold deep significance for the Navajo Nation.
One of the most iconic vistas in the American West. Does resemble mittens, but they are a good ways apart. Great place to ponder or photograph.

When it gets cold in the high desert, giants wear these, even if they're not thinsulate® lined. Disappointing to see they don't have those flaps with the half-glove fingers, but I guess time, wind, and water can only do so much. 5 stars despite the lack of practical features because holy bananas they are stunning to behold, in a setting full of stunning vistas.

Goulding's Resort RV & Campground is a full-service park located just outside the Navajo Tribal Park boundary. The well-maintained grounds offer RV sites with full hookups, laundry facilities, and clean restrooms with showers. The campground has an Old West theme and offers daily tours with Navajo guides to explore the park's natural formations. Guests can enjoy striking views of Monument Valley and access nearby trails.
We were able to make last minute reservations the last week of September for Gouldings campground and lucked out with an end site with a view! The people working there were very nice and the full hookups appreciated. We ended up staying an extra night and were able to get a different spot. The campground is quiet and clean. We used the laundry which was clean with multiple washers and dryers. We didn’t use the pool or anything else but people/ kids seemed to enjoy it all. You can also book tours that leave right from the campground . Monument Valley Visitors Center is literally 4 miles down the road. From there you book multiple tours, go on a hike, tour the museum, get food or just stand at the observation area and see the beautiful formations and a spectacular sunset. If you want full hookups and be away from the touristy madness yet very close to it all, I highly recommend Gouldings!

This is our second visit to Gouldings, our first time here was during Covid and the Navajo Nation was closed. So we came back. Gouldings Campground is a smallish RV resort in a canyon. This is the prettiest RV Resort we have ever been to. We have a 41 foot 5th wheel and are in site #48. It was easy access getting in, getting out is yet to be seen. We did the tour of Monument Valley narrator and guide was Billy, he did a great job, his dry sense of humor was fun. It was $90 per adult, a little pricy. But I learned a lot about Native Americans culture. We also toured (self) Valley of the Gods about 30 miles. It was a slow speed 17 mile tour. It was beautiful, as beautiful as Monument Valley. Gooseneck State Park is also a short drive away. $5 admission to view a unique river canyon. The desk st

What an amazing experience we had staying at the Goulding’s RV Park. It all started at the time of checkin. We had planned on spending 2 nights but decided to try and extend 1 more night. We will have to move you to space # 34. That’s fine, then when we get to that location, it’s the best seat in the house with beautiful views of Monument Valley looking through to window of the surrounding cliffs. Now on the afternoon of day 3 after returning from driving the valley, we stopped by the office wanting to extend 2 more nights, no problem, you want the same space? Yes absolutely please. The staff is kind, friendly, and so willing to help. The park is well maintained as is the rest of the Goulding’s properties. One must have dinner at the Lodge’s Stagecoach restaurant while watching the sunset, and tour the museum next door. Oh, and don’t forget the John Wayne Cabin. I don’t know that it’s hidden, but it’s a gem.

Checking in was a joy. Marlena and Garrett were fun and extremely knowledgeable. I had made a mistake when I booked and they fixed it immediately, we were extremely happy and maybe we should stay longer. I love this campground it is right in the middle of beautiful formations. It has trees everywhere and fun paths.

Stayed in a cabin at Gouldings RV Park. It was advertised as having a double bed, bunk beds and a loft bed. In fact, the loft was unusable by an adult (very low headroom) and if you used the ladder to climb up, it blocked the futon pulling out into the “double bed” (which was significantly smaller than a double and hard as a rock). The bunk beds were not full twin-sized (more like cot-size) and the only way to access the upper bunk was the ladder for the loft which stretched across the whole cabin, blocked the futon and also blocked access to the kitchen and bathroom. Terrible layout and not as advertised. Spent two extremely uncomfortable nights there. On the other hand it was a beautiful location. Our friends noted the lack of level RV spots. Not our favorite location on a 2-week trip through Utah parks.

We stayed at the RV park. Staff were super friendly, and helpful. Park was average. This whole facility is now owned by the Navajo people. Reason enough for us to stay there. We took a tour of Monument Valley, and although many tour companies exist, only Goulding's pucks up right at the RV park. It was Phenomenal. I highly recommend Goulding's.

Thank you to the Navajo Nation for welcoming my family with open arms. Our tour guide, Helen, was fantastic and made us all the finest cheeseburgers amongst the ruins of the Anisazi. It was all incredible, breathtaking, beautiful, and right in the heart of the Monument Valley of Utah. We will be back, as the RV Campground was everything we could ask for and more. Can't wait to share all the trinkets with family. The photo is of a blanket I purchased at Goulding's gift shop, commemorating Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce 🙏

Situated just across from the Tribal Park, Monument Valley KOA is a typical campground offering amenities like restrooms, a dog park, and hookups. Basic WiFi is available along with guided photography and Jeep tours. Visitors can enjoy breathtaking vistas and even embark on a scenic drive through Monument Valley. The campground also offers equestrian tours of the park, meeting conveniently on-site. Guests have praised the cleanliness of the facilities and enjoyed waking up to amazing views while staying at this KOA.
Clean facilities, spacious full hook up pitches accompanied by table and benches and fireplace. Very friendly and helpful native Navajo receptionist on-site. Quiet and peaceful environment with fellow guests even with kids respecting quiet hours. If I’d return next time, I’d consider the horse-riding! We enjoyed our stay and would be happy to revisit and recommend!

Nice location. We found the highway noise to be acceptable. Spots do not have crushed gravel or a hard surface, so when it rains, the spots can become muddy, even with standing water. Electrical hookup locations are pretty well at the front of the site/RV, not in the usual location by the water and sewer.
Douglas S — Google review
This is a great place to stop to see Monument Valley. Plus there's some other stuff to do in the area. The only reason for my 4 star review is the shower situation. The handicap shower head is broken, so that is difficult to use. And the middle stall shower head needs to be replaced, it was like razors on my nipples, which made it difficult to shower. And then the water went cold before I finished my shower. Everything else at the park was great.
Danielle H — Google review
Genuinely the most amazing view you’ll probably ever camp close to in your life. Also worth mentioning these were the cleanest bathrooms we’ve experienced on a five week road trip around the south west. We only stayed one night and had a camper; I imagine if you’re there for longer it could be a little claustrophobic in an RV or larger campervan as the sites are close together and the whole place isn’t massive. Very dry and very hot, but a good place to stay if visiting Monument Valley on a road trip.
L M — Google review
The campsite is relatively new and has clean showers and toilets. However, be warned that sites far from horses are recommended, as annoying flies can be a nuisance. You’ll also miss a shadow as only a few sites have small trees, leaving the rest in the sun all day. Of course, you can’t expect grass in the desert. I parked our RV a bit crooked to get more shade for dinner with the kids. This way, it was still within our site and didn’t bother our neighbours. The only issue was that our car was slightly off the axis of the parking lot. The camp manager compelled me to relocate my RV to align with other vehicles. I inquired about the reason, as the car remained within our designated area. Her answer was: BECAUSE I SAID THAT AND I’M THE MANAGER HERE. The fundamental business rule is: if there is no customer, no manager is needed. This principle holds even greater significance when the customer (myself) has paid her, besides the campground daily fee, more than $300 for a three-hour Jeep rental to explore Monument Valley. The manager disregarded this issue even though other vehicles were parking diagonally to their caravans. Still, she expressed a significant problem when our RV cast shadows over our children’s dining area. It’s better to stay in Gouldings or pass through. However, there is one advantage of staying here. If you pay cash, it’s tax-free, the manager said.
Jan M — Google review
It’s our second visit in seven years. The playground and restrooms have been expanded, and there’s even a new horseback riding area. The campsite itself is nothing special—but who needs anything more when you’re just 9 minutes from Monument Valley with towering red rocks right in front of you? The view alone is unbeatable. Compared to other nearby lodgings or campgrounds, this place is more affordable and friendlier.
JAY H — Google review
Rewrite: This campground is a mixed bag. While it's one of the few places with full hookups, the sites are very close together and it's always crowded. Almost half of their washers and dryers are broken, and the area is swarming with flies at least at the time we stayed there. Yet, it is just next to the highway and close to most attractions.

We’re traveling through the United States as a Dutch family, and this tour with our amazing guide Travis was definitely one of the highlights. We had a beautiful sunset tour, and Travis was incredibly friendly with such a positive and calming energy. He also played beautiful music for us — a truly special experience! Beyond that, he was very helpful and attentive, always keeping an eye out for the other guides in the area. He even helped another Jeep that had gotten stuck. Thank you for this wonderful tour! Best guide and driver we could have asked for!

Our tour guide Sandrea was wonderful. She is a great driver and her explanations about everything were terrific. She kept us all on schedule and we were able to see everything including the fabulous back country only accessible to guided tours. We visited a hogan and met a woman who lives and raises sheep in Monument Valley. She explained and demonstrated how she manually spins wool as well as how the wools are dyed. We highly recommend this tour to experience the magic of Monument Valley.

All thanks to the Navajo people for making this incredible trip possible.

I could not be more pleased with our experience. The sunset tour did not disappoint, the color changes were spectacular. Jamison was our guide. He was very personable and gave personal accounts. He explained Navajo traditions and ways of life. This was truly a memorable experience. Pictured is the shadow of 1 mitten cast onto the other. Jamison had mentioned that only happens twice per year based on the location of the sun.

We took a sunset tour of Monument Valley yesterday and it was such a wonderful experience. Travis is a terrific guide. He sang, played the drums, guitar and flute, and shared stories of his family and the land. No doubt he was the biggest reason we loved the tour so much. Best tour I’ve ever had in AZ. I have visited Monument Valley before and I come to AZ often so over the years I’ve taken many tours. I learned so much from Travis. He’s so friendly and helped those in our group with mobility issues. He played three instruments and educated us about Dineh/Navajo culture. If you can book the tour with him. He also makes pretty jewelry and plays in a band.

Absolutely stunning experience! We had booked the sunset 3 hour tour and it was the right decision. Unbelievable colors, breathtaking place. If you want to experience the backlands, this is the only possibility - with a Navajo guide. Our guide, Larry, has been so great. He explained so much, told ancient stories and showed us the hidden gems and best photo spots. Such a kind man... And he played us also a Navajo song with his flute. We were exciting hear about the history of the diné nation and take great pictures. Schedule was in time, very good organized tour. Be sure not to come to monument Valley and miss it!

5 stars all around! We loved staying here!! Our Tipi was clean, spacious and super comfortable. The mattresses and blankets were warm and cozy, even on a very breezy night. The location of this hotel is fantastic! The stars were very bright and visible, and we woke up early to watch the sunrise over the monuments, right from out Tipi. It was a bit tricky to find at night since there are a lack of lights, but at the round-about continue straight (instead of taking the first turn like the GPS tells you to, and it will be right ahead.) Monument Valley Tipi Village was affordable, and felt like a very safe place for us to stay while in Utah and Arizona. Plus, it was only a 5 minute drive from the Monuments!! Our host Aaron was very friendly, outgoing and cared deeply about everyone enjoying their time while on his property. We loved sharing his Najavo culture through an interactive song and music lesson. It was a very beautiful moment. We can not wait to return- and we highly recommend staying here!

Embarking on the journey to Totem Pole and Yei Bi Chei Point is an adventure that promises breathtaking views and a taste of cinematic history. As you navigate through Monument Valley, be prepared for limited internet service; downloading maps beforehand can save you from any navigational hiccups. The rugged terrain may challenge some vehicles, but with patience, even lower cars can manage the roads. This area is a visual feast—pictures simply can't capture its grandeur!
This is Monument Valley. I can't exaggerate the thrill of seeing where all those Western films were made!. These photos were taken along a "road" that the Navajos have "built" through the valley. It's not for the faint of heart (as they tell you before you attempt it). Wife drove while I took pictures. Eight miles of picking your way through rocks and sand . . . and great scenery! Well worth the drive up from the Grand Canyon.
John D — Google review
4x4 or 4 wheel drive highly recommended for the drive. There is sand and cars get stuck in all the time. Also, keep an extra key in the pocket. Getting locked out is pretty common.

Take your time and enjoy the beauty of this area. Having only seen pictures of here I can say that they do it no justice. It's truly amazing how throughout time these formations have been made. Be warned, the road can be rough. But if you take your time you will have no trouble. We saw plenty of new Mustangs and lower cars have no trouble. For the dorks trying to blow through the place, just let them pass and enjoy the splendor of the area. The fee as of Sept 2018 was 20 per car up to 4 people. Once through you'll be thanking the Navajo Nation for not charging more. It's well worth it. We were in for 4 hours.

Muley Point, located at the southern end of Cedar Mesa, offers breathtaking camping opportunities with its stunning 2400' elevation above the San Juan River Canyon and The Goosenecks State Park. Accessible via the Moki Dugway, this spot provides awe-inspiring views of Monument Valley and petrified sand dunes.
Came across this site while visiting Monument Valley, staying near Mexican Hat. Expansive panoramic views, with distant views of Monument Valley. The road to Muley Point from the main road is loose dust in places and will become impassable mud after heavy rains, so we only spent 30-45 minutes due to an approaching front. Still though, undeniable beauty, and I can't imagine the stargazing opportunities from here. Hope to be back to spend the night someday!
Daniel H — Google review
This was an amazing road trip from Monument Valley where we are staying. Our first stop was Goosenecks State Park, which was nice, but nothing compared to this. It took us almost 45 minutes to cover the 10 or so miles from the main road. The initial climb up with switchbacks on the narrow gravel road with no railing can be a bit terrifying. Especially for someone like me with vertigo and I'm afraid of heights. But it was worth it (as a side note, the drive down is much better as the driver is typically on the side of the mountain, not the cliff). Once you get to the top of the switchbacks, the drive flattens out. But it doesn't get any smoother. If anything, it is rougher and the speed decreases. Once you get to the lookout, it is just awe inspiring. Amazing views in all directions of the San Juan River, Monument Valley, and the Valley of the Gods (our next trip). Make sure you have good tires, some decent ground clearance, and patience. And if there is rain in the forecast, I wouldn't even try it. Definitely worth it.
Tim B — Google review
One of the greatest camping places ever. It's like stepping into a Zane Grey novel. Huge petrified sand dune mesa around 1200 feet high overlooking the San Juan River Goosenecks with Monument Valley in different shades of purple in the distance. When the sun goes down you are miles from any large sizes of light pollution so far gazing is about as good as can get.
James B — Google review
You can actually camp at Muley Point, but be prepared for cold nights. The views to the east, south, and west overlooking the San Juan River are simply spectacular. While cliché, I would consider this to be a hidden gem of Southern Utah. It is well worth the trip.

From Goose neck National Park to 261 North to Moki Dugway to Muley Point. Amazing landscape and views. From Muley Point you can see the Valley of Monuments in the distance and Goose neck Valley. The road up gravel, bumpy and no safety rails. Go slow and not during poor weather. We saw 2 RVs driving this road. THIS IS MULEY POINT EAST not Muley point.

This was a tour of a lifetime! We did the 3 1/2 hour tour and had Tim holiday as our guide. Tim was on the cover of Time magazine a few years back and actually lives in Monument Valley. He showed us stuff that we would not have seen had we gone with any other company we were able to visit his home and meet his family and see how he lives in the valley as well as see some other areas that are not included in a normal tour. I will definitely come back to monument Valley, but I will only go with this company and Tim as my guide.

WHAT AN EXPERIENCE ! An extraordinary experience. Sabrina was our guide for several hours through the Monument Valley backcountry in her Jeep. We really loved that she told us all her stories, showed us all the best spots away from the tourist crowd. Knowing that she has lived here (she was actually born and raised here) all her life in Monument Valley, we were able to learn more about her culture, her traditions, it was really authentic! She knew what she was talking about and this Tour with her completely made sense of our visit to Monument Valley. Generally we are not fans of commercial tourist tours but this one was so different, because it is owned and run by a family, by the actual person who live at this place it is clearly worth contributing to take a tour with them. This tour add so much value and knowledge to our visit at the Monument Valley ! Very Impressed by everything she taught us ! We even eat delicious Navajo Tacos made by her mother at the end of the tour, delicious, a good time to share! Thank you a thousand times for this extraordinary experience we won't forget ! <3

We recently (June 19) took the All Day Monument Valley & Mystery Valley tour. Navajo Guided Tours made our trip memorable; it was possibly the best tour we’ve ever taken. Sabrina, our guide, made us feel like we were spending the day with a friend. She was knowledgeable, informative and entertaining. In the morning we visited Monument Valley, including sights that aren’t accessible to the general public. Our lunch break introduced us to Linda’s at John Ford’s Point. The food was absolutely delicious! The Navajo tacos were tasty and filling; the carne asada was some of the best. In the afternoon, we traveled to Mystery Valley, where we were able to see cliff dwellings, pictographs and pottery shards. After several days of driving to get to Monument Valley, leaving the driving to Navajo Guided Tours was great decision. We highly recommend the tour, and will be more than happy to take it again the next time we visit.

Made a last minute decision to go to Monument Valley on a cross country trip after seeing Sabrina's brochure the night before. Was a spectacular early morning ride with Sam as our guide. Very, very good experience_ he was most patient as we asked to stop repeatedly for pix. Only wished we had gone on the longer trip into the back country. Next time we will!.

INCREDIBLE! My best friend and I got lucky with a walk in tour availability, so I recommend scheduling in advance, but it’s a MUST SEE if you’re in the area! To go into the canyon you have to be part of a tour group and Navajo’s prices are competitive (upper is typically more expensive than lower)! Our guide was fabulous! Knowledgeable about the geology and history while keeping an entertaining pace throughout the tour! They’ll help you capture the best photos too!

The Monument Valley Trading Post, originally owned by Harry Goulding, played a significant role in attracting Hollywood's attention to the area for Western film settings. The Goulding Trading Post Museum showcases persuasive photos and a collection of artwork, pottery, and family memorabilia. Visitors staying at the Lodge can immerse themselves in a step back in time with an hour at the museum.
Absolutely beautiful shop full of unique handmade items. We received coupons for staying in the hotel and they had wonderful sales going on, so I was able to buy a kachina, a piece of sand painting and my daughter bought a dreamcatcher. The shop is so pleasant with amazing views of the valley all around that really adds to the atmosphere. Highly recommend to visit! The employees were very friendly and helpful, as well!

Would be three stars, but I'm giving an extra star to the Navajo for tricking us so well that we laughed. I saw the 50% off signs in photos of the shop and called to ask if they were still having that sale. Yes. So we drove down from Moab to look at some pots. It costs $8 per person in the vehicle to access the Trading Post, and we waited in line on the road for about 20 minutes to pay that. I desperately needed to use the restroom and when I got there I found the first stall door to be completely un-latchable and in odd repair. The next stall had a latch but no toilet paper! Yikes, I wondered, where do my $8 go to? Upstairs at the shop we were immediately shocked to find the pottery had been marked up to nearly 3x the prices of pottery at the expensive gallery in Moab, so that the 50% off sale didn't bring it anywhere near below the Moab price. Incredible selection, though! All we could do is laugh about it and enjoy the incredible views. One thing we'd like to remind our Navajo friends of is that John Wayne was a notoriously racist & homophobic man, and destructive red-scare mongerer who said, “I don’t feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from them, if that’s what you’re asking.” (Playboy, 1971). “Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves.” He was famous for starring in films depicting Natives as "murderous savages," (Roger Ebert's words) and those films showed Natives being violently wiped out... Maybe he shouldn't necessarily be celebrated on the Reservation IMO.

The shop is big and it’s well decorated. The bathrooms are clean but they smell badly, the items in the shop are really high quality and are very beautiful but very expensive. Overall it’s a wonderful shop and it’s perfect for buying something to remember Monument Valley.

The View Restaurant is a laid-back dining spot that offers Southwestern and Navajo cuisine, with the added bonus of breathtaking views of Monument Valley. While the food may not be exceptional, it's still worth visiting for the stunning scenery and the convenience of being located within the park. As one of the few dining options in Monument Valley, The View Restaurant serves as a popular choice for visitors seeking Navajo tacos and other dishes.
The view was definitely the right choice! Although I would prefer the fries a little crisper and more American 😅. (That's just me) The service was fantastic, and I couldn't ask for a better atmosphere. The whole view itself really completed the whole thing. I got the southwestern BBQ burger, and it exceeded my expectations! Like I said before, the fries were great but not fantastic. I loved my time at this restaurant and highly suggest it to all! Best Monument Valley restaurant you'll find. (And if you find a tour leader named Richie, immediately tell him you're booking a tour with him 😉)

It's definitely a beautiful view, but the restaurant food is nothing special and pricey. No vegetarian options, which is really sad for the amount ppl that visit young or elderly. Not to mention, dinner is only 5pm-7pm. That sucks being that there is not a lot of places to eat at. On our 2nd night, we ended up going to Goulding restaurant 10 minutes away, which was way better environment and a variety of food options. Server's were attentive and greeted us with good vibes and good food !!!!
Cynthia G — Google review
Visited in May (2025) so not too crowded. Was able to get a table right away at 8 pm. My wife and I shared a 3-piece fried chicken dish with mashed potatoes and veggies - really tasty and perfectly cooked. And the server kindly split it into two plates without our even asking. We also had the chips and salsa which were some of the best we have had. Crispy and fluffy and salty chips - excellent, and the salsa has a nice kick and is also excellent. On top of that, there are several tables with windows overlooking the Valley and all tables have a view. Sure, hotel food is a bit pricey, but this was an excellent casual meal with a great view. Recommended!
Jeffrey S — Google review
Would not eat here if you can possibly avoid it! Ordered 2 chicken tender dinners, already ate one full chicken tender before I realised the chicken was fully raw and pink on the inside. Both of our meals were completely undercooked!!! Unbelievable and extremely dangerous!!! Told our server I would not be paying for our meal, we still had to pay for our drinks. Outrageous. I must say our server was lovely and very apologetic. It’s a pity because the hotel and view are beautiful, very unfortunate experience at the restaurant.
Caitlin S — Google review
Avoid if you can. We took our chances and overpaid for mediocre food, walking away unsatisfied. Server was ok and the view (as named) is what you pay for, but the food is lacking. The Arizona Spicy chicken was 3 pieces of bland fried chicken that was dry and seemed as if it was cooked hours earlier. The “spicy” part was a plastic little container with sliced pickled jalapeños. The John Wayne cheeseburgers may have been 1/2 lb, but reminiscent of pre-pressed low quality patties topped with cold slices of unmelted cheese. The Johnny Depp wrap was poor deli meat and cheese wrapped in a tortilla for $20+ Be warned , the options are limited , you need to plan ahead. Move along pilgrim
John R — Google review
I recently stayed at the hotel. Dinner here was okay. Not spectacular. Just okay. I had the John Wayne burger when I visited recently. Breakfast was not good at all, especially the eggs. Everything tasted overcooked.
Michael H — Google review
The View Restaurant offers stunning views of Monument Valley, but sadly, that’s where the positives end. We waited over 25 minutes to place our order, then another 30 for the food. A $16 cheese sandwich from the regular menu was identical to the $10 kids' version—same tiny portion, same bland sides. Staff couldn’t clarify the difference, and only a kind (but new) waiter helped adjust the price. The food was underwhelming and the service mostly rude or indifferent. The pricing felt misleading, and the overall experience was frustrating. Stop by for the view—but eat elsewhere.
Sandra S — Google review
When we had dinner here, we had to wait about 45 minutes to get a table and another 30 minutes for our food. My burger was dry and the bread soggy. The fries were not crunchy and the fried chicken was not great either. Some of the worst food I have had in the US. Prices were fair, especially considering that there is no other restaurant anywhere close and the distance that the ingredients have to travel to this remote location. The staff did their best to keep people happy and the view over monument valley is magnificent. The breakfast buffet is included for hotel guest, but was not great even for those standards. Food is served on paper plates with plastic cutlery (I do not comprehend how this can still be done) and doesn‘t include any fresh fruits or healthy alternatives.

Monument Valley Tours offer visitors the chance to explore the stunning desert landscape, featuring dramatic sandstone buttes and colossal mesas that hold great significance for the Navajo people. These organized tours provide various options such as off-road jeep rides, horseback excursions, or guided tours of the tribal park. Visitors can easily set up full-day or half-day tours with knowledgeable local guides who share insights into Navajo history, cultural traditions, and even treat guests to delicious Navajo Tacos for lunch.
Setting up the all day tour was easy. Met up with Fritz at 9am and he kept us thoroughly informed and entertained throughout the day. We learned so much! The Navaho history, how the valley was formed, the culture of his people, and even enjoyed some amazing Navajo Tacos for lunch. Delicious! I highly recommend that you at least take the half day tour of Monument Valley if you can't afford runt full day. Simply Amazing!

Excellant tour! We booked the Monument/Mystery Valley tour and it was fantastic! Our Navajo guide was Fritz, who was very personable, knowledgeable and kept us entertained the entire time. We learned a lot about Navajo heritage/culture and even met up with Fritz's brother Bernard at one of our many stops in the Valley, who played the flute for us, and then both sang us a traditional Navajo song to welcome and protect us on our journey. We would highly recommend Fritz and Monument Valley Tours if you want to see the entire Valley. Thank you for a great day!

North Window Overlook is a must-visit spot in Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. It offers an alternative view of the park and John Ford's Point, making it a brilliant choice for those seeking a viewpoint experience. While the road to get there can be rough, the iconic and scenic views make it worth the journey. Visitors are advised to join a tour for an informative experience about the monuments and local life on the reservation.
I definitely would do a tour as the road can be quite rough, but this is a very iconic and scenic place to visit. Our guide was incredibly informative not only about the monuments, but local life on the reservation. Always be respectful of the area and land and the Navajo people that are sharing it with others

Moki Dugway is a thrilling and scenic drive near Mexican Hat, featuring a series of steep gravel switchbacks that ascend the 1,200-foot Cedar Mesa. The road is navigable by most vehicles, with paved corners and sections. While not for the faint of heart due to its lack of guardrails and narrow width, the breathtaking views from the top make it an exhilarating experience.
The Moki Dugway Scenic Backway, located in Southeastern Utah, is a remarkable and dramatic stretch of road that runs along Utah Highway 261 that connects Utah Highway 95 with US Highway 163. This unique stretch of road–which has literally been carved from steep cliff walls. The Moki Dugway is famous for its steep, unpaved, but sharp switchbacks, which descend 1,200 feet from the top of Cedar Mesa. The gravel road extends for about three miles and has a gradient of up to 10%. The panoramic views from the top are breathtaking, giving travelers a bird's-eye view of the Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, and the surrounding desert landscape. This is not merely a drive but an adventure – a test of nerve and a feast for the senses. This stretch of road in Southeastern Utah is named for the Ancestral Pueblo that early Spanish explorers encountered in this area. The Spanish word “Moki" or "Moqui" and "Dugway", a term that refers to a roadway carved into a hillside or mountain. The winding road has its roots firmly embedded in the mid-20th century's nuclear age. The Moki Dugway was constructed in the 1950s by the Texas Zinc mining company, and it was initially used to transport uranium ore from the Fry Canyon mines to a processing mill near Mexican Hat.

This road is very steep and winding. We were sliding with our Jeep Wrangler on the loose gravel. It has several switchbacks, and no guard rails. The view is amazing on the top, but it was a somewhat nail-biting experience as a passenger going up the hill. Do not attempt this in an RV, larger vehicle or towing. We were glad that we encountered only a few oncoming vehicles. We did it and it was an adventure. I don't want to do it a second time. Overall I think it's very dangerous and you can get similar views from other places as well.

The Valley of the Gods East Entrance in Utah offers stunning landscapes and unique rock formations, making it an unforgettable natural wonder. The area is perfect for dispersed camping, providing ample room and privacy for each pull-off spot. While the road may be rough in some areas, the serene and scenic surroundings make it worth the trip. Additionally, witnessing the breathtaking sunset and sunrise adds to the allure of this picturesque destination.
Fantastic drive!!!! Took about 90 minutes to go from east to west gate. Plenty of time for photos and viewing. Head the warnings about wet roads this would be tough then. Not a road for longer trailers, single axle should be fine to get through provided they have flipped axles and clearance. Numerous spots where there are high departure and arrival angles. Regular cars with higher clearance will be fine also. If you have a front spoiler or air dam that could be a problem. Cars like.... Audi a5 a6 a4 not good to go all the way, they are too low in the front, audi q5, Subaru, Toyota without low fronts, no issues. Enjoy and don't forget to add on moki dugway on the west side. About an addition 45 minutes up and down.

Visited 2nd week of October. This is a scenic drive to view many buttes similiar to monument valley, without the tourism. I spent about 3 hrs travelling from end to end. The road is a typical dirt trail, rough but generally passable, weather permitting. Road conditions include steep climbs out of washes, tight corners, sand and mud when wet. The area is remote, be prepared with water, food, and other necessities. There are many desert washes that cross the road making it impassable in wet weather. Flooding could strand a visitor until the washes and road dry out. The week of visitation experienced dry and warm conditions entering followed by thunderstorms and rain. I decided to extend our stay.

Amazing place! Definitely worth visiting. The road is generally very good, however, there are a few places where you would need a higher car. SUV is great for this road. No need for 4x4. Probably you can also do it in a normal car, but I wouldn't risk it.

Way way way better than the paid Monument Valley drive!! Gorgeous ride, spectacular views, decent ride but high clearance vehicles recommended, there are some deep ruts and steep in areas halfway through the loop. Not recommended for sedans. We started from the east entrance. Free and plenty of blm sites to camp on if needed.

Wow! What an amazing scenic drive. We almost didn't do this and I'm so glad we did. It's absolutely beautiful! The rock formations are incredible and so unique.
Donetta D — Google review
The Valley of the Gods East Entrance is located off U.S. Highway 163 on the west side of the road. From here on, you will be travelling on a dirt-gravel road for the next 17 miles. Just a short distance from Highway 163, you will cross a small, shallow stream, well most of the time except after heavy rains. The Valley of the Gods Road is well maintained but can be washed out in some areas after heavy rains or thunderstorms, so it is always best to check the road conditions on the internet prior. We recommend using 4WD vehicles, but we see plenty of regular vehicles driving on the road but just use caution when driving. Since we have written short reviews for each location within the Valley of the Gods, we will only point out what is unique to each location along the way. All the locations are accessible by following the Valley of the Gods Road, which is a 17-mile scenic route, from the east entrance to the west entrance. Besides the entire VOG is free, you can also pull off anywhere along the way and camp overnight or longer for free, but no campfires. Be advised there are no types of services available along the route to include restrooms. So be prepared, bring plenty of water, snacks, etc., and let someone know your plans in case of an emergency. So, buckle up and enjoy the wonder of Mother Nature.

This remote area offers some of the most scenic drives in the US, with small towns like Kayenta providing essential services for road trips. The Colorado Plateau Province extends to include portions of New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and Utah. The Colorado Plateau contains the Four Corners area, and many National Parks and Monuments. These are some of the most beautiful expressions of the natural beauty of Earth. The Grand Canyon is also on the Colorado Plateau and was largely carved by the Colorado river which starts at Shadow Mountain Lake in the Rocky Mountains in Colorado. The Rocky Mountains are one of the borders of the Colorado Plateau, which is named after the river, not the State. Visiting the Grand Canyon is worthwhile as all who go agree. North Window is one of the must-see spots in Monument Valley, offering a classic view of the Navajo cowboy on horseback scouting the valley. The area also features other picturesque locations like John Ford's Point, Three Sisters, and Spearhead Mesa. While it can get crowded, taking a 1/3 mile walk to North Window is highly recommended for its stunning views.

Historical landmark
The Hub Point is a serene and smooth sand road with a leisurely speed limit of 15 MPH, making it perfect for a relaxing drive. It offers plenty of traction for 2-wheel drive vehicles and provides access to notable landmarks like the Hand, Eagle, and Wagon Wheel. This area marks the southern boundary of the 17-mile loop, beyond which requires a Navajo guide due to restricted territory.
Scenic here is extremely good, just the road is extremely bad

From this point, several landmarks such as the Hand, Eagle and the Wagon Wheel can be seen. This is also the southern limit of the 17-mile loop. You have to hire a Navajo guide to go farther south into restricted territory.

Mountain peak
Sentinel Mesa is an impressive red tabletop cliff and mesa rock formation in a desert national park, standing at over 6,400 feet. Visitors can explore the valley alone or with a guide under the vast blue skies and witness various formations like Rain God Mesa, the Thumb, Gray Whiskers, the Hub, and the Cube. The area offers serene beauty and calmness amidst unique rock formations that seem almost unbelievable due to wind erosion.
Beautiful scenery in the middle of nowhere! Worth the drive.

Truly one of the most, if not the most prominent rock formations you will see in Tsé Biiʼ Ndzisgaii or better known as Monument Valley. At an altitude of 6,450 feet, it is approximately 1.5 miles north of the Monument Valley Visitor Center and is easily seen from U.S. Highway 163. The formation has three distinct layers of rock, at the base, Organ Rock Shale, in the middle, De Chelly Sandstone with a top layer Moenkopi Formation capped by Shinarump Conglomerate. This formation is visible from numerous areas with the valley and for a closer look, take the dirt road that will lead you to a viewpoint. Like all the key rock formations here, to the Navajo people they all have a spiritual significance, and the valley is considered a sacred place. The Navajo see Sentinel Mesa as a symbolic “door post” to the valley, with formations like the Mittens (West and East Mitten Buttes, which are close-by) representing hands, and the valley itself as a dwelling.

I absolutely loved the day here in Monument Valley. Very beautiful and very different. So many different formations. I felt such calm and peace here.

You look and do not believe that the wind is capable of this. Very nice. Probably even more beautiful when you realize the time of formation

Spearhead Mesa is a breathtaking natural wonder that stands out as one of the largest rock formations in Monument Valley. As you embark on the Monument Valley Scenic Drive, this impressive mesa captures your attention with its unique shape, reminiscent of an arrowhead or spear tip. Although it isn't marked on official maps and lacks designated parking, you'll spot it prominently along the eastern side of the loop.
Huge mesa next to totem poles view point. Great view. You feel drawfed in this area!!
