Ships
In the northern Russian city of Murmansk, visitors can explore the NS Lenin, a historic icebreaker turned museum. This decommissioned ship, powered by a nuclear reactor fueled by uranium 235, offers guided tours that showcase its captain's bridge, map room, and reception hall. Murmansk itself is known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage, with attractions such as the mesmerizing Northern Lights during winter.
What an experience. On January, I visited this place with my friends. To enter the museum, we must follow the schedule of excursions (there is the time schedule outside) and there are maximum of visitors +40 people per schedule (сеанс). When we bought the ticket, suddenly the officer said its free because its student's day. So we enter this museum for free. Inside, there is one guide that explain to us everything about this ship (explained in Russian). We could take photo and video as much as we like. Be careful in some stairs it is so narrow! But inside, we can see how great the Lenin ship was, and how rich the history was. Love this place.
Adrian R — Google review
The nuclear icebreaker Lenin is an absolutely massive and majestic vessel! Standing next to it, you can’t help but feel amazed by its sheer size and powerful design. This legendary ship is a true symbol of human engineering and Arctic exploration. The area around the icebreaker is beautifully maintained, with clean walkways, informative plaques, and a great view of the Murmansk harbor. There are also several delicious food trucks nearby, offering tasty snacks and hot drinks - perfect for enjoying while admiring this historic ship.
Ihar B — Google review
Unfortunately I could not enter as so many people waiting more than 3 hrs even in weekdays in August 2025. No online ticket abd waiting list, so you have to come here abd wait. 60 people every excursion.
Miki T — Google review
Very impressive to see this behemoth up close, and even enter it to explore the cabins and the engine rooms. You must book in advance as they only allow a certain amount of people to enter per tour, I guess to preserve the ship and prevent it from getting overcrowded. It was operating from 1959-1989 and this was the first nuclear powered icebreaker ever created. Lots of things to learn from the guide who explains very well the purpose of each cabin that we visited. Recommended!
Suciani A — Google review
It is a must-see when you go to Murmansk. A guide on board showed us the places that are allowed to be visited on the ship. We completed our tour in about 1 hour. You can buy souvenirs at the exit. Prices are not very high.
Dogus M — Google review
Had to wait a bit initially, but it's worth it. Much to learn for technical and history enthusiasts. The only problem we faced was the lack of an English-speaking tour guide.
Adnan I — Google review
Note that you can only enter at 12, 14 and 16 exactly. Not at any other times and always as a part of a guided tour. It is a very nive experience to see this magnificent ship. But only on the inside, you are not allowed on deck. Also they charge five times more for foreigners (500 rubels) , but no information is given in English at any point if the tour. I still reccimend it, but be aware.
Jonas G — Google review
Very nice place to visit in Murmansk. This ship is the first nuclear icebreaker ship in the world and have lot of historical stories. They will guide you room to room if you visit this place. Maximum per-quota is like 10-12 people only and it cost you around 300Rub/person. They have souvenir shop in the entrance inside the ship, and the price is good. Tour guide will explain everything in detail about the story of the ship and their experience, but they only explain it on Russia (so make sure you bring your Russian speaking friend to translate it for you). The tour will take around 90-120 minutes depend on the tour guide. And they have many interactive room that you can play with, but time is short. You also can take photo and send the photo to your email for free (must try!!) Beside that, make sure you bring jacket/sweater, because temperature is so freezingly cold.

Visited March 2024. No one was there during our visit. It was 0900H. Great montage of the bay from it. There is an eternal flame as well (guided by CCTV). No one is there to guard it.

I walked up to this monument In the morning and witnessed the sun rise, you truly don't get an understanding on how big this monument is until you are standing before it. Quite humbling to be there. You get a magnificent view of Murmansk too.

There are two routes to reach the statue both have tracking but one is longer. If you like tracking use the longer route and you’ll be able to enjoy the view properly

A place worth visiting. U can see the murmnask town from the top and the sea next to it. Its really huge. As tourists for a affordable price you can take government bus which will take you to the top. From there you need to walk just 500-700 meters to the monument. 2GiS map is really helpful in finding the bus numbers for the area and its available offline as well.

The Naval Museum of the Northern Fleet in Murmansk, Russia is housed in the former Officers Club building and offers a captivating display of naval history. With four floors of exhibits including photographs, ship models, flags, maps, uniforms, weapons and other navy artifacts, visitors can delve into the rich history of the region. The museum also features dedicated rooms showcasing the history of WWII Arctic Convoys.
Two floors filled to the brim with models, mementos, dioramas, displays, weapons and equipment. Especially the models made in extreme detail, some minuscule, some several meters long, are impressive. A diorama of a hundred or so ships heading for battle, each maybe ten centimeters long, each a unique, different detailed model. Awesome! And entry is just 100ru. Must see!

Lovely staff and very interesting museum (however not much, if anything is written in English...) the museum was kept open for an extra half hour for us over lunch because it was so interesting (about how Murmansk was used to in a way fight off the nazis in Russia ). Nice building and nice view outside

The Murmansk Regional Museum of Local Lore, established in 1926, is the oldest museum in Murmansk Oblast. It features a unique geological collection obtained from drilling the Kola Superdeep Borehole and houses the only dry aquarium exposition of seabed in Russia. The museum showcases exhibitions on wildlife, minerals, and the history and culture of the Saami people, who are indigenous to the region.

Our group of 12 people had lunch at this restaurant before the flight. The flight was "fantastic," to say the least. In Moscow, at Sheremetyevo, I barely made it to the medical station, where I was given an anti-nausea injection and tablets. Eight of us got food poisoning, all showing the same symptoms: high fever, vomiting, and diarrhea. Currently, the restaurant is conducting an "internal investigation" to determine the cause of the incident. The restaurant’s manager is in touch with me. I will update this review as new information becomes available.

The St. Nicholas Cathedral, an impressive orthodox church located in Murmansk City, is highly recommended to both residents and visitors of this beautiful city. With its stunning architecture and rich history, the cathedral serves as a spiritual center for many. The grandeur of the complex stands out, though it would be more rewarding without the presence of opulent buildings and cars nearby.
This is the Cathedral Crunch in Murmansk City. I strongly recommend to visit this for people living and visiting our beautiful city!
LEXI C — Google review
(Translated by Google) The history of the emergence of the Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker is interesting. Immediately after the end of the Great Patriotic War, the believers of Murmansk asked to send a priest to the city, and a year later Vladimir Platonovich Zhokhov arrived here with his wife Elizaveta Ivanovna. A year later, the parishioners bought a small wooden house, which they renovated on their own in a few months, it grew and turned into a real church monastery. At the beginning of December 1946, the Nikolaev prayer house was consecrated and the first religious procession was held here. The modern Cathedral of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker was built in 1986. It was then that the revival of Orthodoxy began in Murmansk; one after another, new churches began to appear to replace outdated old buildings. The cathedral complex includes the cathedral and the temple of St. Tryphon of Pechenga, which appeared here in 1989 and was consecrated by Bishop Panteleimon of Arkhangelsk and Murmansk.

The place is miraculous. Of course, I still hurt later, but my leg never gave up again. (Translated by Google) Monument to Cyril and Methodius Opened on May 22, 1990 in the park in front of the regional scientific library in Murmansk. The author of the monument is the Bulgarian sculptor Vladimir Ginovski. The Murmansk monument is an exact copy of the monument, which is located in front of the People's Library in Sofia, where it was erected to commemorate the 1100th anniversary of the creation of Slavic writing. Two castings of this sculptural composition were placed in the Bulgarian city of Blagoevgrad and in Rome, and the last copy was in Murmansk. The monument to Slavic educators in Murmansk was the result of the active work of local writers. On May 24, 1986, on the initiative of polar writers, primarily Vitaly Maslov, for the first time in the USSR the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture was solemnly celebrated in Murmansk, which was soon declared a state holiday. And in 1988, when Maslov was in Bulgaria, the idea arose to give Murmansk a monument to Cyril and Methodius, as a sign of gratitude to the Murmansk people who revived the Day of Slavic Literature and Culture in Russia. On May 22, 1990, a solemn and colorful opening of the monument took place in the park in front of the building of the Murmansk Regional Scientific Library. Bronze statues, symbolizing unquenchable candles, are installed on a low concrete pedestal, which, in turn, is placed on a powerful base of 12 granite slabs.

Iconic element of the city, a counter-point to Alyosha. Murmansk, the city of heroes, these great, with rifles on their backs, and these tiny, like the wanderer cat who took six years to return home. As Alyosha towers over the city, standing guard, Semyon sits nestled in a small valley of a nearby park, unimpressive and yet no less a part of Murmansk.

(Translated by Google) Monument to a cat named Semion. The word "monument" makes me think of a big building... but here this monument is in the shape of a cat sitting on a bench. This semion monument is a symbol of courage and devotion for the people of Murmansk. According to local legend, in 1987, a family living in the city of Murmansk was on holiday in Moscow with a semion cat. Well...in Moscow this cat disappeared. They returned to Murmansk without this semion cat. Day after day passed, month after month turned into years. After 6 years, this family was shocked when their cat disappeared in Moscow, suddenly appearing in front of their house in an emaciated condition... It turns out that for 6 years, the semion cat has been trying to find its owner and covered a distance of about two thousand kilometers from Moscow to Murmansk. This event, which was described in the Murmansk Bulletin newspaper in 1994. This story spread throughout Russia, almost similar to the story of the dog Hachiko in Japan, which became a symbol of loyalty. The Russians even made a short film called "Love Story" based on the story of this cat. (Original) Monumen kucing yg bernama semion.

Surprisingly, it took Semyon more than six years to travel 2,000 km to reunite with his family in Murmansk. For his bravery and loyalty, the sculpture was unveiled in 2013 next to Lake Semenovskoe, depicting him with a small bundle as a symbol of his journey. This monument is now one of the city's most visited and beloved landmarks, a local symbol of perseverance and love. It is located in a beautiful park, on the shores of a lake, perfect for strolling. The dynamics are felt both in the hero’s gaze and in his posture – the fisherman seems to be preparing to throw the net he is holding in his hands into the thick of a school of fish. At the edges of the pedestal there are two anchors attached to the wall of the building... Nestled in the stunning Russian polar north, Vodopad Na Reke Lavna is a breathtaking waterfall that promises an unforgettable experience for nature lovers and adventurers alike. Accessible via a scenic eco-trail, visitors can enjoy a leisurely 20-minute walk along the riverbank, where the path remains dry during summer months. The Monument to the Heroic 6th Komsomol Battery is a well-preserved historical symbol dedicated to the wars fought by gunners. There are numerous similar monuments spread across Russia, but understanding the magnitude of their accomplishments reveals that this particular monument represents only a fraction of what future generations owe them. Positioned strategically at an intersection, this artillery stronghold effectively guarded Murmansk against capture while the infantry rapidly relocated elsewhere for better protection.

On the pedestal there is a bronze wreath and a memorial plaque with a brief description of the feat of the artillerymen of the 6th battery, who in September 1941, for a week, having neither flanks nor rear, repelled the enemy’s onslaught. The infantry supporting them was transferred to another area, where an even more threatening situation developed. The batteries were left alone, but continued to fire at the enemy. Guns failed and soldiers died. On September 14, the survivors were surrounded and made their last stand. Later, our units arrived in time and pushed the Germans back across the Zapadnaya Litsa River. The dead soldiers (then it was believed that 37 people died) and their commander Grigory Lysenko were buried with military honors in a mass grave right on the battlefield. The command of the Karelian Front assigned the unit the honorary name: “6th Heroic Komsomol Battery.” Later she became a guard and participated in the liberation of Norway and Poland.

It was a nice experience to be with such energetic & seemingly forever hungry raccoons! 😁 It's good to know that the staff always ensure they have rest time although a bigger room or maybe in an environment that mimics their natural habitat would be great as I still feel like they're like prisoners. 😔 Nonetheless, it's a pleasant moment with them. The staff was accommodating and friendly too.👍

The icebreaker Ermak, often referred to as the "grandfather" of the icebreaker fleet, holds great historical significance. This memorial sign represents a remarkable landmark in maritime history. The vessel's role and contribution are unmatched, symbolizing an era of breakthroughs and advancements in icebreaking technology. With its pioneering design and robust capabilities, the Ermak became a shining example for future generations of icebreakers.
(Translated by Google) November 3, 1965 - in the center of Murmansk on Lenin Avenue, at the end of the building of the Museum of Local Lore, a monument was opened to the legend of the Russian icebreaker fleet - the icebreaker Ermak, which served the Fatherland for 65 years. The authors of the memorial sign are Leningrad mosaicist A. S. Nikolaev and artist I. D. Dyachenko, designed by Murmansk architect N. P. Bystryakov. A real anchor from the Ermak icebreaker and a panel made of pieces of smalt - multi-colored glass - were installed. The panel depicts the icy expanses of the Arctic, through which the Ermak is making its way. On the bronze plate there is an inscription: “To the Grandfather” of the icebreaker fleet of the Order of Lenin, the icebreaker “Ermak”. (Translated by Google) During the years of repression, the Kola Peninsula was a place of exile and imprisonment. Only 200 thousand people passed through the 27 camps of the Gulag system located on its territory. And this is not counting special settlers, who in some years made up the majority of the urban population of the region (in Kirovsk in the 1930s - up to 75%). On October 30, 2010, on the day of remembrance of those repressed, the grand opening of the monument took place. The monument is a huge teardrop with a candle flame glowing inside it, and barbed wire is placed along the bottom of the statue.

The foundation of the building was laid on a hill, where on October 4, 1916, the solemn ceremony of laying the foundation of the city, named Romanov-on-Murman, took place. During the construction of the House of Culture, it was named after the still living Sergei Mironovich Kirov. He was the organizer and direct leader of the transformation of the northern tundra and the place of royal exile into an “industrial outpost of socialism in the Far North.” The opening of the Fishermen's House of Culture took place on November 6, 1932. We came to relax and watch a great work, but instead we watched as a quarter of the hall was just calmly and brazenly filming on their phones, someone was taking pictures, someone was filming, and someone was filming the whole action from beginning to end. If you care about the audience who understand at least something about the culture and rules of behavior in such places, do something about it. I would like to note that there were several workers of the cultural center in the hall and none of them made a remark. Walking around the hall after the third ringing I will understand, but the use of mobile phones is, I repeat, theatrical rudeness and disrespect for the audience who want to enjoy the moment. I hope that my message will reach the management and measures will be taken, because such behavior in theater places is unacceptable! I would like to express my deep gratitude to the organizers for these unforgettable moments. The staff conducted an entertaining quest (I can promise that you won’t find anything like this anywhere else) and a fascinating master class (making colorful individual mugs). There was not a single blot, everything went at a high level. There was a photo shoot throughout the entire event (so this amazing day will definitely remain in the memory for a long time). Despite the fact that the concept of “museum” is associated with something tedious and uninteresting, this place is completely opposite to these qualities. I advise you to visit and have a good time (I’m sure you won’t regret it)! P.S. special thanks to Maria, Alexander, Svetlana and Alexey (Original) The "Memorial 'Moryakam, Pogibshim V Mirnoye Vremya'" is a poignant tribute located in the Leninsky district of Murmansk, inaugurated on October 5, 2002. Nestled between Chelyuskintsev Street and Heroev-Severomortsev Avenue near Semenovskoye Lake, this memorial features an impressive lighthouse standing nearly 18 meters tall alongside a fragment of the ill-fated Kursk submarine's pilothouse.

(Translated by Google) The memorial was opened on October 5, 2002 in the Leninsky district of Murmansk on the descent between Chelyuskintsev Street and Heroev-Severomortsev Avenue, next to Semenovskoye Lake. The memorial includes a lighthouse just under 18 meters high and a fragment of the pilothouse of the lost Kursk submarine. The lighthouse tower houses the “Hall of Remembrance,” which is open Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. In the hall there are memorial plaques and a book with the names of military and civilian sailors who died in peacetime. The memorial is well maintained, there are stairs between all the objects, with beautiful lighting at night. There are observation decks that offer stunning views of the city and the Kola Bay. A real anchor is comfortably located on one of them, and under it there is a capsule with sea water. The beautiful Orthodox Church of the Savior on Water, consecrated in 2002, sits silently at the top. It became the third stone church in Murmansk after St. Nicholas and Vladimir churches.

The townspeople appreciated his work for the benefit of the city so highly that a monument to Naydenov was erected, a cultural park complex near Semenovskoye Lake was named after him, A memorial plaque was installed on the Church of the Savior on the Waters, the construction of which he initiated. The Memorial Complex “To the Sailors Who Died in Peacetime” deserves a special story. The complex is three-level. On the first level there is an observation deck and a capsule, but not with a message to descendants, as one might assume, but with the water of the Barents Sea. On the second level there is a lighthouse, it houses a museum for sailors and a memorial Stella. Part of the Kursk submarine is built into Stella itself. And the complex is completed by the Temple of the Savior on the Waters, designed as the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl. The whole complex looks fundamental and offers beautiful views of the city.

(Translated by Google) Abram-Cape In the vicinity of Murmansk there are many objects with names that include the word “Abram”. The old people explain this with one ancient legend: supposedly, it happened in the 16th century, during the reign of the formidable Tsar Ivan IV. At that distant time, on the Kola Peninsula there lived a priest named Varlaam or Araami (later transformed into Abram). Previously, there was a village here with the beautiful name Varyazhsky Ruchey, which was founded in 1926. In the 30s, a water intake was built here in order to fill tugboats and other ships with water. In 1937, ship repair docks moved from Toros Island to the village, and after some time this place was renamed Abram Cape. During the Second World War, air defense units were located at Cape Abram, which protected the Kola Bay and important objects of Murmansk, Severomorsk and Polyarny from enemy air raids. In 1988, in memory of these events, a memorial complex was founded here, which includes an anti-aircraft gun, two Yak-9 and Su-15 fighters, a dugout, and an aerial bomb. Unfortunately, the memorial today is not in the best condition and is maintained by private donations.
