The Wensleydale Creamery Visitor Centre is a must-visit destination in Hawes, offering a unique experience for cheese enthusiasts and food lovers. The center features live cheese-making demonstrations and an impressive cheese room where visitors can sample different varieties of the famous Wensleydale cheese. Additionally, the on-site shop offers a wide range of cheeses, dairy products, hampers, and deli boxes for purchase.
Had a great time here, probably helps that I love cheese. Staff very friendly and efficient. Reasonable prices. Excellent cafe. Enjoyed the cheese making experience and tastings. We probably rushed it a little as we needed to drive home. Worth a visit only £5.75 and if you pick up a leaflet from various outlets you can get 2 for 1

Loved the Cheese Experience which was fun and informative. The shop and cheese room is full of delights to buy. However the restaurant really let it down. Overpriced for the quality received, tables available but told full initially and there seemed to be chaos amongst younger staff working out table spaces at front of restaurant yet ignoring those waiting to be seated or to find out if there is space. Restaurant was really completely disappointing.
Claire K — Google review
I visited the Wensleydale Creamery with my two young daughters (ages 1 and 4) and we all had a lovely time. The demonstration on how cheese is made was really interesting, and it was great to be able to view the factory in action. The cheese tasting was a highlight for me – so many varieties to try, and all delicious. I also found the prices in the shop and café to be very reasonable, which was a nice surprise. My girls especially enjoyed the interactive parts of the visitor experience, which kept them engaged and made it fun for the whole family. Overall, it’s a great place for both adults and children to enjoy. I’d definitely recommend a visit if you’re in the Yorkshire Dales.

I just love cheese of any description, and with my own history of working in the dairy industry a visit here was a bit of a no brainer really. The cheese making demonstration followed by tasting was an absolute highlight. Nice to see they had put out some Wensleydale and fruit cake samples to try. The two together just work so well. Regrettably there was no actual cheese production to watch from the viewing gallery during my visit, but I can hardly fault them on account of their production schedule. The cheese shop is also a must visit, more so than the equally well stocked gift shop in my opinion. Well laid out and with samples of each flavour available to try before you buy. I did a lot of trying, and then of course a little buying. Be prepared for the cold in here though, presumably to help keep the cheese fresh.

Wensleydale creamery visitors centre and Calverts Restaurant is in Hawes, in literally the heart/ middle of the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. The staff had spot on customer service/ hospitality. In shop, cheese shop and the restaurant. They have a small visiter car park, but the is a large car park 150 yds down the road, which is a pay car park. The Wensleydale creamery experience you need to buy tickets for online. In Calverts restaurant, we were lucky to get a table, many people turned away and had to book. For 2 meal,a side & 2 drinks cost £36. The meal was delicious 😋. I will post pictures. The cheese shop was very busyand wasnice to taste other cheeses. 🧀 😋 Will show also in pictures as well as the gift shop. The gift shop was like going in a candy shop as there was loads of items to buy and gifts. Some items was expensive but others not so bad. Ice-cream cost £3.50 each. I totally recommend. Wheelchair friendly and has blue badge parking.
Anne S — Google review
It certainly looked like fun when reading about it online. But when we visited on Sept 27, the place was absolutely packed. There was no parking in the visitor lot, so we needed to use the Pay & Display lot located down the street. I had hoped for a lovely cheese type tea in the restaurant, but had not realized that booking was necessary. I would have had to wait an hour, and I wasn't willing to do that with so many people crowding around. We opted to go to the "fast food" counter and order cheese scones, each of which came with a walloping amount of butter. I ordered the cappuccino to go with it. I felt a bit like splurging. The scones were OK. I wouldn't say they were outstanding. So, overall, I'd say my experience was disappointing, and I'm one who usually gets excited by simple things!
Barbara G — Google review
This was great fun. We didn't book in advance but it turns out that we didn't need to. The demonstration how to make Wensleydale cheese was very informative (And we used a 2 for 1 offer), full of information on the surrounding area and the instructor/demonstrator was a very likable gent. When we finished, we did have a booking in the restaurant and went for the tea for two which was a full on cheese overload! The staff did forget our drinks order so the wife had to go and reminded them, but apart from that the service was OK. It was a nice and relaxed atmosphere and reasonably priced for this day and age :-). The shop was chock full of nice gifts and I couldn't resist a new water bottle (Have you seen this chicken? IYKYK). The cheese shop was brilliant, being able to test all the cheeses before making a purchase. The surrounding area is beautiful and the drive to and from was a pleasure.

Took the tour last year, was amazing. This year, was back for more cheese (after free samples in the tasting room!) Both times had a lovely meal in their Calvert's resturant. Totally recommend.

Museum
Specialty Museums
Located in the town of Hawes, the Dales Countryside Museum is a small yet comprehensive museum run by the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Housed in a former Victorian railway building, it offers exhibits on rural life, including ancient Viking jewelry, Bronze-Age tools, church organs, and more. The museum also features an outdoor sculpture trail showcasing the artwork of Yorkshire craftspeople and providing insights into the area's wildlife, culture, landscape, and built heritage.
The best £5 ever spent! And your admission ticket is valid for 7 days. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing and learning about the history of the Dales. At various points throughout the museum there are points where you can listen to audio interviews with local folk talking about growing up there. Absolutely fascinating! I'd definitely back there. The cafe there had a great selection of food all reasonably priced. Everyone was so accommodating and friendly too.
Julia B — Google review
We visited on Thursday 03rd October 2024. Having visited Hawes several times this was our first visit to this Museum. Based at the old station, the museum details not just the history of the closed railway line but also the history of the dales both from a formation perspective as well as its human history. It includes art exhibitions which seemed a little out of place and a more appropriate and interesting reproduction of a mine inc a little candle to light the way. Refund of car park cost when you buy a ticket. 2 main aspects of the museum, with one being formed inside the train carriages and the other the main building. A separate cafe on site but managed by a different company associated with cycling.

Hada lovely trip out from our holiday cottage in Bainbridge to Hawes. Popped into the Dales Countryside Museum, a very well laid out and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Thank you.

Small museum in hawes. Good local history museum, showing various exhibits through the ages in and around hawes. Informed and friendly staff. Old train station repurposed, old train to walk along as part of museum ( good for kids), little outside nature walk, main building very clean and accessible for all. Little mining exhibit ( kids would love). Gift shop with quality items. Cafe cycling themed ( cycling shop also onsite), good coffee and good food and lovely staff with reasonable prices.
Sue W — Google review
Very informative, great for adults and children. Shows the history of life in the Dales region, from mining to farming and daily family life.
Sue D — Google review
A lovely walk back in time, and for such a small population, the museum is top notch, with many involved staff and dedicated volunteers. KUDOS TO ALL!
Celeste B — Google review
An excellent smaller museum but with loads to see, spread over three floors and at the old station platform, a display in several railway carriages. We had a good welcome from the staff on duty, with an explanation of the museum layout plus a simple, one-sheet laminated map to guide us. Mining, farming, local customs & traditions plus a history of the hand knitting industry in the Dales. There was a whole series of displays around sheep, their breeds and wools. It also covered the series of processes to knitting wools and making up. This was only the start, really. It is well laid out with great information boards and practical examples. The round gallery at the end had marvellous display of local knitting from local wools and textiles. There is a good cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and bike shop. All the usual accessible loos and facilities were also there. Inevitably, there is a gift shup, sure but it's a good one with some decent local products. There you are! Good paid-for parking too, though if you park at the museum and pay and display you get £1 off entrance. A 5-star visit for us! I think someone told me, the ticket lasts for a week.
Simon C — Google review
This is a wonderful museum, with locally found artifacts dating right back to the stone age, all properly displayed & labelled to show their relevance. There are also large displays related to the farming, lead mining, and knitting industries that are part of the area's history. The staff are really friendly, helpful, & knowledgeable, and do a great job of helping you to fully appreciate the museum. There's also a cafe where you can get refreshments, with tables outside on the (former) station platform - lovely on summer days. Highly recommended !

Scenic spot
Located in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales, Hardraw Force is a must-see attraction for nature lovers. As England's highest unbroken waterfall, it cascades over a limestone cliff with a single drop of around 100 feet, offering stunning views of the surrounding landscape. Visitors can also explore the nearby Hardraw Force Heritage Centre to learn about the area's history and natural wonders.
Beautiful hideaway yet accessible. It’s an hour just outside Durham. Fantastic for a day trip. £4 entrance fee- note that cash is the preferred payment method. 10 min walk from entrance to the waterfall itself. Hiking boots not required Take a book or a sandwich and chill out listening to the sound of the water 🧘‍♀️
Binta S — Google review
Beautiful single-drop waterfall- you can't capture its size or beauty on camera. You can mark at the attraction, or a few miles away if you want to follow one of the many of the circular walks which include this stop. There are also some ruins of ancient buildings, and a beautiful river to see within the ticketed area. At the base of the waterfall is a deep, clear pool where you can wild swim. This is a great stop for the whole family! There is a short walk to the falls from the entrance, or a longer walk (around 2km total) which goes up to the top of the waterfall and back down. If you start by following the right-hand entrance, there are newly built stairs to the top. The other side features a natural stone "staircase" which is very steep and unstable in places, although there are safety barriers. 🎟️ You do have to pay to get in as the land is privately owned and maintained but this is well worth it as the place is stunning with no litter. It is only £4 per person and you can pay cash, card, or contactless. All of the paths, stairs, and bridges are in excellent condition. There is a small cafe when you enter/ exit and everything is reasonably priced with friendly staff! 🦮✅ Dog friendly! The waterfall, forest, and cafe are all dog friendly.
April W — Google review
We didn't know before we visited that this is a privately owned waterfall and grounds and the task of keeping this going and the upkeep must be phenomenal to the standard that it is and breaking it up into 3 different routes for visitors is excellent 👏 and throw in the coffee ☕️ shop and visitors centre it's ideal 👏. Better still there is a pub at the entrance 😀 and a beautiful church ⛪️ next door to visit at the same time ⏲️.
Vincent W — Google review
45 mins to walk both routes. Nowhere really to sit near the waterfall so can't really spend much time at it. Nice to see but would only go back after a downpour however I feel they would close access if there was. No access without jumping privately owned walls or fences. Didn't want to but a drink or cake as we had to pay for access.
Christopher G — Google review
My partner and I went car camping near by and he wanted to go to Hardraw Force as he’s never been before. I use to go every summer when my family camped near by and I’ve always loved going! He absolutely loved it! We went mid morning on a Saturday and I’d wasn’t busy! We did pay £8 for the both of us to go in. It was nice to take the dog too!
Megan W — Google review
Yorkshire and nature at it's finest. Dedicated car park with toilets and cafe. Lovely welcome by the staff. £4 each to get through to a stunning walk on well maintained paths. Absolutely gorgeous waterfall and pool.
S K — Google review
The highest single drop falls in England of 100 feet looks spectacular, even in this summer drought. As a bonus, the road back to the motorway, the A684, is a stunning stretch of countryside road that gives a fantastic view of the Howgill hills. Hardraw Force is a stunning waterfall situated just off the A684, which runs along the length of Wensleydale, a truly beautiful stretch of English countryside. It sits in an estate behind the Green Dragon pub, a handy satnav setting, and costs £4 at time of writing. They prefer cash. There are also full toilet facilities and a cafe. Parking is restricted, about 12-15 spaces but there is also off road parking by the Old School House. The path is firm and wide and suitable for all visitors and only about half a mile long. There are plenty of benches and tables to sit and picnic and a variety of trails around the rest of the estate. Many waterfalls are difficult to get to but Hardraw is totally accessible and stunning to see.

Gayle Mill is a 19th-century sawmill that has been fully restored and is now in full working order. Visitors can join guided demonstration tours to see the water-powered Victorian machinery in action, providing a glimpse into the lives of workers at the mill. The site offers a fascinating insight into Yorkshire history and industrial architecture, making it a must-visit for those interested in English history.
Well worth a visit. The inexpensive guided tour was informative, interesting and well delivered. It's a fascinating story of the building’s evolution during the industrial revolution. There are working wagdr turbines and industrial equipment. Allow about 1.5 hours for the trip.
Tim H — Google review
Gayle Mill at Hawes is a time capsule of history dating back to 1780 when it started as a cotton mill. Then moved onto flax, wool, electricity generation and wood. Fascinating! Well worth a visit. Two volunteers, Nigel and Ian, gave our group of Americans a wonderful tour and a hot drink. Another stellar example of volunteers and the local community banding together to keep this historic building and its contents available for future generations. Do visit. Free of charge but donations gratefully accepted. Visit to learn about the metal ladder attached to the outside and WWII!
Deirdre B — Google review
Well worth a visit if you’re in the area. The tour is around 1 hour or so, so leave plenty of time. The lady showing us around (I think her name was Sarah) was particularly knowledgeable and friendly.
Matt M — Google review
Lucky enough to be in the area on the day that the mill was open and tours were taking place. The mill has a great and rich history which was explained by the very knowledgeable guide on the tour which lasted over 90 minutes. Well worth it. Thanks!
Craig R — Google review
Really fascinating place, the guide gave us the history of the place and there were demonstrations of how some of the woodworking machinery worked - all powered by the force of the water via belts and shafts etc - no entrance fee but your expected to make a donation. Do not miss this glimpse of history and try to arrive around the guided tour times, we found it easily on the internet. Thank you for a great for a great afternoon.
Steve H — Google review
A wonderful tour by one of the volunteers. So interesting. Telling the story of the 3 different products and of the war period. Unfortunately water levels so low could only briefly run the smaller turbine to produce electricity. Cannot recommend enough.tours on the hour at present Thursdays only.

A fantastic place to visit, great tours containing lots of interesting information and demonstrations. There is limited parking outside. Wrap up warm as it can be quite cold and wet outside and drafty inside. Children will need supervision as it is an industrial site.

The Market House Hawes is a charming old building located in the market square of Hawes. It houses craft stalls offering original crafts and handmade gifts, including glass ornaments, beeswax food wraps, paper crafts, and cushions. The spacious interior also features a delightful ice-cream parlor and a cafe. Additionally, it provides wheelchair accessible entrance and toilets for visitors' convenience.
While visiting the Tuesday outdoor market, I had a look inside this lovely old building which dominates the market square. It's very light and spacious inside. Enjoyed browsing round the craft stalls in the main hall. There were some lovely original crafts and handmade gifts including glass ornaments, beeswax food wraps, paper crafts and cushions. There's a nice little ice-cream parlour and a café, a wheelchair accessible entrance and toilets. The busy outdoor market was small but had a variety of stalls and friendly traders selling everyday household items, sheepskin rugs, clothing, honey and preserves, leather goods and more. There are pubs and eateries all around, and pay and display parking close by.

The Hawes National Park Visitor Centre, located in the heart of Yorkshire Dales National Park, is a valuable resource for visitors. Hawes itself is known as the capital of Wensleydale and provides easy access to explore the picturesque Dales.
Very interesting countryside museum full of the crafts of yesteryear with information. I especially liked the knitting part. Gift shop, tourist information, cafe (light bites/sandwiches, not meals), very helpful and happy staff. Small discount for Senior's and if parking in car park. Toilets (also in car park). Seasonal Exhibition.

Hawes is nice town. Well worth a visit. Try the Main St Sweet shop just across from the market place for ice. The Best Value Icecream we've had since before lockdown.

We love Hawes. Just remember that the shop shuts at 6pm & there's nowhere else (without a significant drive) to get supplies. It's also worth paying a bit extra for a room or pitch with a view. It rains a lot but sitting all cozy, with a mug of something warm, looking at the views is as good a way to spend time here as anything else.

A lovely information centre with museum attached just on the edge of the village centre. Within the the village are various shops with plenty of Public houses also. Outside one of them you will encounter one of the best Wallace and Grommit displays I have ever seen Then again you are in Wensleydale.

Waterfalls
Aysgarth Falls in Yorkshire Dales National Park Visitor Centre is a picturesque spot featuring a series of cascading waterfalls set amidst lush woodlands. The falls cover a one-mile stretch of the River Ure and are best seen during wet weather when thousands of gallons of water cascade over wide limestone steps. The surrounding area offers opportunities for walks, woodland hikes, and picnics.
Had a lovely day out with family. Beautiful spot for picnic and nice walks. Everyone enjoyed the day. Falls are picturesque and scenic. We went there after a long period of dry spell so not much water .. still it looked stunning. Less water has its own advantages as we were able to cross the river using stepping stones. I don’t think it would be possible if the river is full. Ample parking. Take your own food and water. I will definitely recommend this place for picnics and walks.
Ashfaque S — Google review
This is the sort of place where every which way you look is another perfectly framed view just waiting to be captured. Perfect for an absolute amateur photographer like myself who needs all the help he can get. I would imagine it to be stunning at any time of year, but was particularly beautiful with the first of the autumn colour fringing the edges of the river. Another attraction of this is that it does not depend on good weather to be enjoyed. In fact a spell of wet weather before you arrive will leave the falls in full spate and positively enhance the experience. If you are getting down direct to the waters edge tread carefully. The rocks can be slippery when wet, particularly if you are watching the falls and not your feet.
Mark D — Google review
Lovely national park with some stunning waterfalls and walks. Best get there early though as the car park by the visitor centre gets very busy throughout the day during half terms or school hols. Nice little cafe in the visitors centre.

Wonderful place to visit and explore. We did the short walks to see the 3 falls (all beautiful and a real sense of the power of nature), and also a route from the bottom of the main carpark which took us over fields to a charming village. We’ll definitely be back to walk the circular route to Bolton Castle. Highly recommend planning your trip to be there over lunch, the tearoom on the bridge was excellent!

I absolutely love Aysgarth falls! I use to go every year during summer when on camping trips. I have recently gone again after a few years and took my partner who had never been. It was as beautiful as I remember. We went car camping in a near by car park and we when to the falls first thing in the opening. It’s great for dogs too! Plus, my partner was loving the fact that Robin Hood was films there!

Amazing little haven, Yorkshire really is a beautiful county. It has 3 falls, top middle bottom. The middle falls is basically just a viewing platform, but the top and bottom can be accessed for close up and engaging views. Lovely place. Worth a visit. Parking is cheaper at the main car park. The cafe before the hill down to the falls is more expensive. Paid £7 for 4 hrs. N ya can get same for up to full day in main car park at bottom between the falls.

Nestled in the charming village of Hawes, Wensleydale Pantry is a delightful spot for food lovers seeking a quick bite or a cozy café experience. This eatery offers an array of delicious options that cater to various dietary preferences, including vegetarian and vegan dishes. With its inviting atmosphere and friendly service, it's the perfect place to unwind after exploring the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park.
Recommend the Wensleydale Pantry. Good menu with some veggie and vegan options. Food is tasty and the decor of the place is nice and it's spacious too. It's nice they do half portions of food. Not accessible due to the stairs and dogs are not permitted.

What a lovely breakfast. We went 3 times 2 for breakfasts & once just for coffee. We were going to go for one of their roast dinners but leaving a day earlier than expected, disappointed us. The roast dinners are served ever day as part of an extensive menu. If we are in the area again, we will definitely visit again. Would recommend.

The BEST place we ate on our entire holiday to the local area. Huge selection of breakfasts (including all day breakfast), mains, sides, deserts, drinks, etc. The food was delicious with large portions and good prices. ☕️🍃There is a great selection of vegetarian, vegan, and gluten free food too, both mains and deserts. They also have soya milk for coffee/ tea, and an unlimited help yourself coffee syrup bar, which was a real treat! 🦮 Be warned, it is NOT dog friendly!

Staff were stressed when we visited but that does not excuse the servers attitude to me when I questioned my order. I ordered two sausage sandwiches, one with black pudding and one with bacon as well as two latte coffees. When asked if I wanted salad I said no but I wouldn't mind some tomatoes, she replied I'll just do two salads it's easier. The total bill for these items came to £22 not a cheap snack. While waiting for the sandwiches to come I examined the bill to find the sausage sandwiches alone had cost £5.50 each, with an additional £1.50 for black pudding on one sandwich and an eye watering £3.95 extra for two small rashers of bacon on the other sandwich. Confusingly, looking at the menu, those two rashers of bacon were priced at £3.90 if ordered additionally to eggs on toast meals. I approached a staff member who attempted to justify to me a few of the reasons why they charged the unbelievable sum of £9.45 for a sausage and bacon sandwich with salad. I honestly felt like I was being lectured as not only did she explain the ingredients were locally sourced, she went as far as justifying the cost by telling me the rates were £1800 per month too. To her credit, she did offer to reduce the bill and refund £1.50 for the salad I had not ordered but not before insisting I had ordered this as she'd heard me herself. She heard my son in law at my side say he would have whatever it comes with. It needs to be pointed out that she was not the one taking the order at the time either. I sat down to wait for my order to arrive....it came with salad !! The quality of the sandwiches were superb but the price and quantity far outweighed the value for money. They were obviously stressed as the cafe was closing at midday for a function and food was being hurriedly prepared, clingfilmed and placed on tables at one end of the cafe area. Not a chilled environment and not something I would expect at 9.45 in the morning but in this instance, not my problem. One other point to make is that upon ordering, we were given our coffees which, had we waited to have these with our sandwiches, they would have been cold, so, nothing to "wash down" the sandwiches with. I do not recommend this place and only tried it as my usual haunt was closed for a family holiday. My preferred stop is Penny Garth cafe literally yards up the road opposite the fish shop. In there I can purchase a wholesome sized sausage and bacon sandwich for exactly £5.50...no salad and no frills but served in a timely fashion and always with a smile.

We’ve come here a lot over years and has always been decent standard and good value. Unfortunately, now we’re talking £18 for pie and chips, and with that sort of price I wouldn’t expect overcooked chips or black broccoli. No cushioning on the seats either, very uncomfortable. Tired. Dirty. Can’t eve see the pattern on the stair carpet.

Terrific - home cooked food with excellent quality ingredients. I had the steak pie which was all - tender - meat with a proper short crust topping made with suet, delicious. Nice accompaniments, too. Went back for breakfast a couple of times also all good ingredients. Well worth a visit, plenty of tables and friendly people.

This place was a saviour when The Fountain wasn't serving food because of a private function and the staff at the Crown couldn't give a toss when I wanted dinner. Large dinning area and a perfectly acceptable place for a social meal. Service was excellent and the food was delicious. Highly recommended.

Great butchers, high quality meat, excellent service. Live in Suffolk but holiday once a year in the Dales and always use this butchers when we come up. Much better than any butchers in Suffolk. Best venison and duck I’ve ever had this December. Thank you

We have been visiting the Dales, in particular this area for well over 15 years. We always make an effort to get out baked goods and meat from here. Always. It's a place we make a bee line for. However on Tuesday of this week we bought some chicken thighs and wings. The thighs were given to us from the freezer. I'll admit, I never thought to check the date. But when we got back and went to use them the following day (24 hours), we were greeted with a pungent smell from the thighs and they were sticky and green. It was then we noticed the they were out of date according to their labelling. Which turns out is illegal. Now we still love this butchers. But this is a bit dodge and potentially very dangerous. I'm thinking the tall standing freezer needs a good thorough check over of its stock.

Great place to get lunch for walking the hills. Plenty of pies and slices. Cakes are excellent. Walkers should stock up on the cakes for their afternoon tea as most cafes in the area are closed by the time you've finished on the hills. Lived the Eccles cakes & Fat Rascals

Really lovely butchers ans great choice. Went here for a savory as they looked too good to miss. Little pork pies were incredible and had a steak and veg pattie which was also beautiful. Pork scratchings were to die for and the fairy cakes were beautiful when paired with a good yorkshire cuppa. Lovely butchers.

AVOID!... in September 2024, we booked a room for two nights for the New Year's Eve celebrations. In the week before our trip, we tried contacting the Board several times via email, phone and Booking.com to arrange a meal for NYE (we have a dog, so needed to make sure we could get a table where dogs were allowed). The day after the free cancellation period expired, I got a call from The OYO Cocketts Hotel saying that The Board (which they now ran) had been closed for several weeks, but we could eat at The Crown ( which they also ran) and if we still needed, room they could 'open up' the Board but there would be no staff or food available. We did not want to stay in an empty pub on new year's eve, so we reluctantly decided not to travel the 240 mile round trip with such vague arrangements in place. I was charged the £99 cancellation fee and was told that this was a Booking.com policy, but on the Booking.com cancellation page it says the waiver request has been sent to the hotel. I am leaving this review as I have tried every other avenue to get a refund for the service that the hotel couldn't provide.

Strange experience and shame the pub is in a poor state. Rooms are not too bad but lack of food, pub closing at 6pm on each night was odd. The breakfast was served next door, which nobody told us about when we checked in. Luckily we bumped into other guests who told us just before we were going to leave and find breakfast elsewhere. Hawes is great but there must be better places to stay than this one. But, this could be great if they get their act together.

Rooms ok, very poor service from the company that has taken over OYO. No instructions on how to collect keys. Pub now only open fri, sat sun so was all shut up when we arrived OYO useless! Very helpful manager Carl at the B&B next door who also provided an excellent breakfast the next day

Hawes Farmers' Auction Mart Co. Ltd. offers a convenient and scenic overnight stay with basic yet clean facilities, including toilets and waste disposal. The location provides stunning views, abundant wildlife, and easy access to the town center. Visitors can observe the auction and interact with helpful staff for market schedules. Additionally, it serves as a motorhome stopover with well-maintained amenities and an honesty box system for payments.
Bit of an odd tourist attraction. But if you're in Hawes on a Tuesday and have never experienced a livestock auction, go. It'll help you appreciate how hard hill sheep farmers work for low returns. Luckely my wife is an ex-live stock farmer (pigs & cows) so I had my own personal guide. The animals, both waiting to enter the ring and those sold, were penned to the highest standard. We saw no distressed animals. The cafe, it's the perfect greasy spoon. It's billy basic but food is great, staff friendly and the local clientele welcoming. As I said; odd visitor attraction but a must if you want to teach children where our food comes from and or educate yourself.

Stopped overnight in my campervan, it was quiet and very tidy. You will need levellers for the car park, which i large. If you do intend stopping overnight please park away from the main mart as room is required for lorries to turn if there is a mart on. Hawes centre is 5 mins walk and there are walks up into the countryside. Dogs are allowed but keep them on a lead. There was CPD( near the toilets ) 24hr toilets (no chemical waste please) and a fresh water tap is on the side of the main mart, left of the office. On mart days there is a cafè on site. £15 per night please put you cash in the honesty box, i used one of my envelopes for this and put my reg on the front. We travel for four months of the year around Scotland, Northumberland, Cumbria and the Yorkshire dale. We must say Hawes Farmers' Auction Mart was good value for money. There was an on site vets when we were there in the porta Cabin, they are there most days a some evenings.

The White Hart Inn Beer Garden is a popular spot for a delightful evening meal, although it may be on the pricier side. Booking a table in advance is highly recommended due to its popularity among both locals and visitors. The fish platter is highly recommended, and the side salad with fruit slices and dressing is particularly enjoyable. The pub, restaurant, and hotel offer a lovely atmosphere with friendly staff.
Excellent food, treat prices but worth every penny!
Janet B — Google review
Went in august with my mates when we were up in Hawes, lovely little town, but I had a feeling this place was a bit of a tourist trap when I saw the prices, and my suspicions where affirmed when I saw the variation on the menu. There’s no way you can serve all that stuff and not have most of it frozen. But alas my friends wanted to go as it was supposed to be an expensive treat. They ordered starters (I didn’t because I had a bad feeling and would rather spend that £12 on a couple pints), and when their lamb shoulder starter arrived, it basically looked like cat food on a soggy warburtons crumpet, and tasted like it too. Another mate got crab tortellini, of which he got 2 pieces. Then the mains, I got the mince and potato pie with “thrice cooked chips”, £20. Thrice cooked maybe if they deep fried them three times out of the freezer, because these were clearly frozen pub chips. I’ve worked in a crap pub before so I know. And then the dry slice of meat pie burned around the edges on a bed of boiled cabbage and grubby boiled baby carrots with the stem. Mid to bad food with awful value for what you’re paying for. I’d go somewhere else in town for a pub dinner if I go again.

Checked the reviews and following “book to avoid disappointment” recommendations in comments went to the website and booked for 1PM Boxing Day. Got an e-mail confirmation and walked 2 miles to get here just to find it closed with not a single soul inside. Obviously it was a massive disappointment. If you have a booking system you need to manage it and not leave it running on auto while you are closed. Also could update google maps opening times and not just leave it with generic “hours might be different” notice.

Review only concerns a meal we had there. Dreadful meal, I'm afraid, though your mileage may vary… I don't think it's always like this. We thought the Greek angle in the menu sounded interesting, as it's rare to find a decent vegetarian offering. Briam should be a rich dish of tomato, potato, capsicum, zucchini, onion etc. roasted to intensify flavours, and seasoned generously with herbs. What we got was nothing like that… literally chopped zucchini, and mushrooms, barely cooked, swimming in tomato straight out of the tin. Unseasoned - no potato, no flavour. Not quite inedible if you're absolutely desperate, but not a restaurant meal. On the positive side, the host was very apologetic - said they had a new chef (who clearly had no idea!) - didn't charge for the meal and offered a few options for compensation, which we didn't bother with, as the moment had well and truly passed. So, in summary. One of those really bad moments, but they did make every effort to make it right. Better luck next time, except we'll probably never be back in Hawes.

Awful food served in dingy surroundings, different meals looked almost the same and served luke warm. Partially cooked vegetables. This was the most interesting menu we found in Hawes. We have never been so disappointed!

My husband and I waited for 50 minutes for our meal. I ordered beef stefado. When it arrived it was dry and looked as though it had been under the grill. The dish was hot but the stefado was not. Very disappointed. As there was no service check I went and returned the meal. The waitress/ staff member brought me a refund and offered anything else from the menu. She was very apologetic. This was Thursday 22nd May.

While staying in Hawes we went to this hostelry with another couple for an evening meal. It is a very busy pub popular with the locals but we got the impression they were short staffed. It took an hour and twenty minutes for our food to arrive and no apology or explanation was given. The food was however ok with the steaks in particular being well cooked so we would consider going there again.
Neal H — Google review
We only popped in for a drink and needed a meal ss we had been travelling most of the day. Admittedly it was 6.00pm on a Sunday but the man behind the bar was rude from the time we walked in and asked what beers were available. He coukdnt be bothered to tell us but waved his arm across the bar instead. When we asked if they were serving any type of food he replied "oh no there's only 2 of us on" . So we had to make do with a packet of crisps each. Ten minutes later staff carried through big plates of food for another couple!!! We spotted a place opposite that looked like it could still be serving food at 6.55pm so we left and we were were in luck and had tge lovely welcome and fantastic food at tge Wensleydale Pantry. So why didn't that ignorant rude barman suggest we tried opposite. Don't come here on principle!

"The Chippie" is a traditional fish and chip shop located in Hawes, offering a delightful menu of classic British fare. Visitors can enjoy high-quality fish, such as cod or haddock, served in crispy batter cooked in beef dripping. The establishment provides the option for takeaway or dining in and has received praise for its fresh and delicious offerings. Customers have highlighted the exceptional quality of the food, with crispy chips and flavorful battered fish.
Wow wow wow! Large servings and the cod was amazing! The best part for me was the curry sauce which was magnificent! Ordered a 2nd round of it. Manage to dine in on a Sat Evening & saw a queue for takeaways! It feels like Chippies is making the town feel alive! Must try when in Hawes!

The best chip shop in the area! The food was so good, I forgot to take a picture until I was halfway through... Safe to say, everything is delicious, freshly made, and high quality. There is a long queue every evening for dinner so get there in good time, even if you want takeaway. The queue is closed at 8pm, but they usually continue serving until the existing queue has been served. There is a free car park with public toilets only a minute walk up the road.

Stopped here for lunch after visiting the Wensleydale Creamery. The fish and chips were overcooked and was too oily (oil temperature too low?). It wasn't really seasoned much either so had to add a lot of malt vinegar and salt. The mayo, tartar sauce, and HP sauce were given in small packets and some of them were expired. Honestly didn't expect much for fish and chips in the middle of the Yorkshire Dales, so I'm not devastated or anything, and I honestly doubt anything else in the area would do much better food-wise. Service was quick and staff were lovely though!

Despite its smaller size compared to other falls in the area, it offers an incredibly impressive sight. What makes Cotter Force particularly popular is its easy accessibility, with a specially graded path that allows wheelchair and pushchair users to reach the waterfalls. The path is less than 1km long, making it perfect for visitors of all ages.
The atmosphere here is incredibly relaxing, and it's a truly a great escape. The water is perfect. Place for a refreshing swim. I highly recommend it to anyone looking to unwind.

A little, quite out the way Yorkshire gem. Fancy a cool dip on a hot day or just a nice place to sit and rest listening to the water cascade into the pool at the bottom of the falls, then this is the place for you. Just off the A684. A small layby on the A684 will take about 6 vehicle's perhaps . Wheelchair access all the way to the falls.

Easy walk to a lovely water fall. Lots of wildlife to be seen on the way. Parking is in a small lay-by at the end of the path. It’s a nice spot for a swim with minimal risks. Can be busy when the weather is nice

Just a short walk from the road where there is a lay-by, OK for pushchairs too. A cascade of three I think from memory, with a pool at the bottom deep enough for a little swim.

This review is written from the perspective of a parent with a 2 and 4 year old who were looking for adventure. This place is perfect for a young family who want to have a little adventure to a waterfall. The waterfall itself is a really picturesque setting, great for a family photo opportunity. Lots of fun can be had throwing stones into the river. We were there at the perfect time of year to encounter a Mummy duck and her ducklings making their way up the river. Once you've seen the bottom of the waterfall, there is a little footpath to the right, next to the fence, that leads you to the top and you can have fun walking on stepping stones in the river. Make sure you walk up a bit from the top of the waterfall though!!

Popped in on Sunday. A wonderful gallery filled with some beautiful art as well as crafted items. Hot chocolate was tasty too! We enjoyed sitting on a comfy sofa, sipping a hot drink and exploring all the art. Very reasonable prices too.

A lovely independently owned gallery and cafe. The art was interesting and affordable, lots of cute things in the gift shop and very nice staff. Ellie went the extra mile for us and was very kind. We only had drinks so I can't comment on the food but we would definitely go back to try.

Stayed at the bunkhouse for a weekend - excellent space, lovely and new and cosy, with everything you need. Popped into the gallery on our way out and there were lots of gorgeous artworks, trinkets, jewellery, pottery, etc. Would recommend!

Chapel Gallery is such a pleasure to just wander around and perfect for unique artwork, crafts and presents - and coffee! Ellie was really helpful with great advice - some little knitted sheep booties were perfect for a friend's new grand-daughter. Well worth a visit.

Park
The Yorkshire Dales National Park, spanning over 680 square miles, is a picturesque destination in England that encompasses charming dales and quaint villages. Visitors are drawn to the renowned areas of Wensleydale, Swaledale, and Wharfedale within the park. Additionally, the Howardian Hills offer a quieter yet equally stunning experience with its lush green landscapes, rolling hills, historic estates, and ancient abbey ruins.
The Yorkshire Dales is an absolutely stunning place to explore. The scenic drive through the hills was one of the best I’ve experienced — peaceful, quiet, and incredibly refreshing for the mind. The atmosphere is calm and the landscapes are breathtaking at every turn. It’s a perfect trip if you’re looking to disconnect and enjoy nature. One tip: plan your stops ahead of time. Make sure to find a good spot for refreshments before and after your journey, as options along the way can be limited. Highly recommended for a scenic escape.

Friendly locals, beautiful views, stunning drives and so many walks to choose from what's not to love. Weather was kind to us which was a bonus. Every welcome centre at the national parks we visited were full of passionate, knowledgeable people who truly wanted to help us find the best experience depending on what we were after. Five days exploring just isn't enough time. We'll be back.... Lots!

When I was 10 years old I came to the Yorkshire Dales on a camping holiday with the rest of the Church Choir I was a member of. This trip was by way of a return to a place where I had been happy. The fact is that I had an even better time this Autumn. I saw places I had been before, over 50 years ago and where I learned to love walking. Circumstances meant I have been unable to return until now and I do not intend to leave it so long before I make another visit.

There is nowhere on Earth that compares with the beauty of the Yorkshire Dales. The rolling hills, gorgeous villages and stunning views everywhere you go.
Carl M — Google review
The Dales are one of the best places in England. Lots of walking in and around old villages, rivers, lakes and hills. If the weather is good then the scenery is very good.

I recently visited the Yorkshire Dales National Park with my family, and it was such a wonderful experience. We found a lovely spot for a picnic with wide open views of the rolling hills, and the kids were thrilled to discover a well-kept playground nearby, which gave them plenty of space to run around and burn off energy. The setting felt peaceful but also family-friendly, making it easy to relax while the children played. There were plenty of food options available too, which was really convenient when we wanted a quick bite without unpacking everything from the picnic basket. One of the highlights was spending time by the lake – it was calm, scenic, and perfect for just sitting back and enjoying the surroundings. The whole day felt easygoing and refreshing, with something for everyone to enjoy.

Beautiful area for walking, woods, water and picnics. A number of options, some wheel friendly. Paid parking allows for either car parks. Cafe facilities in the village or at Cavendish pavilion.

Youth hostel
Nestled in the heart of the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park, YHA Hawes offers a cozy retreat for travelers seeking adventure and relaxation. This youth hostel features simple dormitory-style accommodations as well as private rooms, some equipped with en suite bathrooms. Guests can enjoy a delightful on-site restaurant and bar, perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.
I visited this place when doing The Herriot Way and it is the perfect place to stop! It had everything we needed, well stocked kitchen, comfy sofas, really friendly and kind staff, warm showers, plus a delicious breakfast - vegan option available!
C T — Google review
The hostel is comfortable, clean and friendly. There are multiple food options available and a small bar, but it was only open for a limited amount of time on the day that we stayed. Breakfast had a good selection of options. There is a well sized and secure bike store. There is a good drying room. It is a short walk into town. Slight downsides - the beds are basic and the mattresses are firm. If you need more than one pillow then make sure to ask before reception closes at half past seven. Unfortunately you cannot switch off the corridor lights so they shine under the gap in the door. I’d be happy to stay here again, but perhaps I’d bring an eye mask and ask for an extra pillow at check in.

This hostel has everything you could need: laundry, drying room, bar, self catering kitchen, food served, camping spots and bunks. A great place to stay on the Pennine Way, but I wish it wasn't up a little hill, I was very tired that day.
Biro C — Google review
The staff were really helpful. The twin bunkroom was possibly the smallest i have been in but I did see other rooms that looked more spacious. The breakfast offerings were plenty.
Alasdair T — Google review
Clean and tidy rooms. Friendly staff. Within short walk of Hawes centre. Car park quite small but plenty of adjacent road parking. Quiet and chilled atmosphere

Excellent check -in - let us in a bit early so we could get off for the day. Super clean, comfortable bed and rooms. Well equipped kitchens, clean, everything you need and free tea / coffee with milk if needed! Warm and safe and great views,

This was such a lovely place to walk. All well signed on the way round. The waterfall was well worth the climb. Nice little tea shop on the way out. Parking on site.

Beautiful falls hidden within the woods. A good walk to get to them. Do enjoy the stream flowing next to the walking path. So calm and peaceful and only accessible by walk. Calming
Sitaram C — Google review
Nice place to visit. Will spend a bit more time there, as a quick stop while in general area... Water wasn't very high at any of the local falls, but must be quite impressive when full flowing... Enjoying the beautiful natural surroundings. Parking is easy and in a layby quite close.
