Church
Bete Medhane Alem, the largest monolithic church in the world, is a must-visit when exploring Lalibela. This architectural marvel greets visitors right at the entrance and ticket office, making it an ideal starting point for your journey. Surrounded by 37 impressive colonnades—some of which have crumbled but were restored in 1954—the church's design echoes that of the ancient Aksum Cathedral, a significant site in Ethiopia’s Christian history.
Excellent to go at 8am because it is empty. Alternatively Sunday it is packed with locals in beautiful church clothes. If you arrive at 2pm you will have toke to see everything but closes sharply at 5pm no exceptions. Be mindful in Christendom this is one of the holiest places far more Holy than many things in Rome says a Catholic!

One of the largest rock hewn church of Lalibela, in this church you will find the holy cross of King Lalibela named Afro Ayigeba
Mulugeta W — Google review
Fantastic structure, it was the first stop in our visit to Lalibela and its gigantic walls and columns caused a memorable and possitive impression. The light is beautiful in the afternoon, making the stone change colors as the sun changes position.
Maricha M — Google review
The first and largest church on the tour. There is a fantastic 7 kg solid gold cross that is rarely brought out, it was stolen once. There are also the 'graves' of the patriarchs. Abraham, Jacob and Joseph. You can ask about how you can test whether you are with sin or not.

Its good to go with a tour guide to appreciate the history of the church

Nestled within the captivating landscape of Lalibela, Bete Abba Libanos is a remarkable church that showcases the incredible artistry of rock-hewn architecture. Carved into the southern wall of the Southern Cluster, this stunning structure features a roof that remains connected to its original rock formation while being surrounded by a passageway, giving it an almost freestanding appearance.
The series of churches brings wonder to your mind on how people could have devised and organized such construction hundreds of years ago with a chisel and hammer. The size is astonishing.

The Church of St. George is a remarkable rock-hewn church located in Lalibela, Ethiopia. It is part of a group of churches connected by underground passageways and surrounded by a deep trench. Lalibela itself is considered one of the holiest cities in Ethiopia and was designed to be a New Jerusalem after the capture of Jerusalem in 1187. The Church of St.
Saint George Church is truly the highlight of Lalibela’s rock-hewn churches, and seeing it in person was just awe-inspiring. The way it’s carved perfectly into the rock in the shape of a cross is almost hard to believe. I was lucky to visit when it wasn’t too crowded, which made the experience even more special—calm, peaceful, and almost surreal ⛪️ it’s so much worth a visit!

Stunning. The most iconic of the Lalībela churches. I was fortunate enough to be here for a Sunday morning service which was amazing to experience. As a bonus there were fewer people asking for food or money compared to the day before.

The Extraordinary St. George Church in Lalibela Visiting the remarkable St. George Church in Lalibela was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Carved entirely out of a single rock in the shape of a cross, the church stands as a breathtaking testament to ancient craftsmanship, faith, and Ethiopian heritage. Its serene atmosphere and spiritual significance left us in awe.

🚨BE WARY of those Ethiopians on the hill top with a hut, next to St George. They tried to ask my friends pay for camera fee, which was already paid when we bought the entrance ticket. Bloody greedy people. Make sure your ticket indicates camera fee has been paid if you are bringing a camera (mobile phone camera not required to be paid) Otherwise this church is the most popular of all churches as it is really pretty! It's a small climb to enter and exit the church.

The most unusual of the eleven Rock-Hewn churches in Lalibela. A stunning church including the surrounding space that was carved downwards from volcanic rock. Need to see to appreciate this amazing architecture. The Church of St. George was constructed under the reign of King Lalibela in the 12th century. Must see
CK C — Google review
One of the most stunning places, I was blessed to visit. The rich History, the people, the inside sacred worshipping areas were something that one can only feel. The Priests are kind, the people are kind. This should be one of the wanders pf the world.
Maryam N — Google review
Truly one of my favorite church among eleven . Still my mind can’t believe that it was a solid rock and just a few centuries ago , people of Ethiopia cut off the rock a full size church . Unbelievable!! Don’t be lazy and visit a town of Lalibela and its mind blowing churches . But the way a ticket cost is two thousand five hundred birr and it valid for five days . Basically you have a five full days to enjoy and dive into unique Ethiopian culture . Here is a two big celebrations in Lalibela during a year , first is Fasika (Easter) and another one Christmas 🎄
Vasyalifestyle — Google review
The most visually impressive of the Lalibela churches from the outside, due to its Greek cross form. Inside there is not much to see in this small structure. The approach, through a narrow trench, is unique. The symbolism of the church built to illustrate Noah's Ark is seen from the outside. As an added bonus, wildlife can be spotted here, such as monkeys, vultures, lizards, and eagles.

Biete Qeddus Mercoreus is part of the Western group of rock-hewn churches in Lalibela, Ethiopia. It is positioned between Bet Amanuel and Bete Belgios and stands out as a smaller structure completely carved into the rock. Unlike some other churches in the area, it has not been covered by metal roofs. The church features murals and frescoes, with a cross that dates back to its founding.
(Translated by Google) Positioned between the most important Bet Amanuel and Bete Belgios, it presents itself as a structure completely dug into the rock but with much smaller dimensions. The visual effect is picturesque and characteristic and also has the advantage of not being covered by one of the hideous metal roofs that have degraded the entire site. My companion tells me that thirty years ago it was completely different... Nestled just a short tunnel away from Bet Medhane Alem, Bete Maryam stands out as a captivating gem among the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. This charming church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary—who holds a special place in Ethiopian devotion—is renowned for its exquisite design and intricate decorations. Often regarded as one of the oldest churches in Lalibela, it features an enchanting interior adorned with stunning frescoes and relief carvings that tell stories of faith and history.
Definitely worth the visit - it’s a site to behold !

Great place. A little hard on the feet though. Be prepared to walk on rocks in your stocking feet.
Steven W — Google review
It is an impressive, rather special historic complex of rock churches. The crowds and the multiple times one has to take one's shoes off makes it hard work. The air quality is also rather poor in most rooms, which adds another level of discomfort. Still a "must see" even if you only take a flavor of it and don't bother with every church.
Jeroen M — Google review
It is the one of the world and the first. and also amazing church and holy place forever.
Ermias W — Google review
If you visit Ethiopia this is a must see place. You can do all 13 churches in 4 hours if you motivate your tour guide to not drag their feet (they insist on it taking 2 days). However the amount of sights you can see and things you can do is unbelievable - don't touch the 900 year old paintings as they won't stop you. Also admissions is $50 USD/person so be mindful of your ca$h.
Mark B — Google review
Rock hewn churches. What an amazing place. You could spend a lot of time here wondering at the craftsmen who built /carved the church. There are few tourists and local guides have good English and knowledge. Try the .local food while you are there.

Bete Amanuel is a remarkable monolithic church in Lalibela, believed by some to have been the private chapel of the royal family. It closely emulates the architectural style of Aksumite buildings and features a striking double Aksumite frieze inside. Amazing and interesting facts we learn from our guide . Now I know everything in Ethiopia has a meaning related to religion . Even we go at sunrise to the church with locals which are celebrating St.George day. Lalibela is magic . Worth it every penny to go and visit that special place especially for Ethiopians .

Beautiful place. The ticket price is $100 per person. I think it's too much. Before entering there, everyone recommended us a guide of 20 dollars per person but eventually we went alone and found the guide inside for 700 bir per person. We saw all the churches in one day. I recommend :)
Ewelina K — Google review
The entrance price went up to $100 in August 2024 and if you’re not on an organized tour expect to pay another $30 per day for a guide and then be prepared to have scores of people offer to ‘help’ or watch your flip flops when you have to leave them or just plain ask for money. It ruins the experience somewhat but Lalibela is special. Can’t help but wonder at the precision and craftsmanship of each of the rock hewn churches. I could have spent a few days exploring here but best seen during a Sunday service or a pilgrimage.

World heritage site so worth a visit to be sure. Internal conflicts in Northern Ethiopia have decimated the tourism industry here which means there are no visitors and the economy is suffering. That also means that there are no crowds!! (When I went 12/2023 - there had been no violence for 4 months. Please check before you go to make sure it is still safe.) The churches are beautiful and the people lovely. Tickets are 100$ and my guide was 30$/day.

Despite the awe-inspiring nature of the Rock-Hewn Churches in Lalibela, which is considered one of the six wonders of the world, I must express my deep disappointment with my personal experience there. As an Ethiopian myself, it was disheartening to encounter such unprofessional and concerning behavior from the local guides. I strongly believe that both the local and federal government should collaborate to establish a transparent and standardized pricing system, clearly displayed in front of each hotel in the vicinity of this area. It is disheartening to witness individuals who should be ambassadors of their heritage instead exhibiting cunning, calculated, and overall disappointing conduct.
Siye K — Google review
A wonderful experience!! It was my second time in Ethiopia and first time at Lalibelas rock hewn churches . A ticket cost is two thousand five hundred birr , and valid for 5 days . And I was lucky enough to attend a priest and monks service on Easter eve !!! It’s happening only once an a year so guys don’t miss this celebration of Easter or it’s can be also epic celebration during Ethiopian Christmas time . The vibe is awesome , and it unique in the same time only in Ethiopia.

🚨BE WARY OF THE PEOPLE THERE! There will be corrupted guides or greedy locals who ask you to pay for your camera (mobile camera not included). Ensure you pay the camera fee (300 Birr) at the entrance and have it WRITTEN 📝 on your entrance ticket, which is valid for 5 days This place is nice and wonderful. A great sight. However, 99% of the people there are not good. They appear friendly but it all comes at a cost. They'll ask for money in the end. Be on your guard when you visit. Entry ticket costs 50 USD. If you paying Birr, they'll calculate by 50 USD multiplied by the current USD to Birr exchange rate.

Ben Abeba is a renowned restaurant in Lalibela, Ethiopia, known for its excellent Shepherds Pie and unique Ethio-Scottish-owned, Dali-esque architecture. The restaurant offers 360-degree views from its perch on the edge of the ridge and has been widely covered in publications like The New York Times and Selamta. Visitors can enjoy the eccentric building and panoramic views while dining at this one-of-a-kind establishment.
So we only ate at the restaurant and did not stay at the hotel just to clarify. The food was exquisite, the service was Immaculate and the timing of our meal was everything. We arrived before sunset and were able to see the most breathtaking sunset I've ever seen. The food is diverse and includes Ethiopian favorites alongside some international cuisine. Make sure to try the crepes with banana and honey. Simply to die for. When you're in Lalibela, be certain to dine at this location even if you choose not to stay at the hotel.

My review of today visit. October 2020 Restaurant reopened, and I was the first foreign guest since the beginning of the pandemic. First of all, the view and the design of the place are superb. The most beautiful Ethiopian sunset that I seen so far. The place is on the outskirts of the village, the food tasty. The main road in the region is mostly under construction, so a local transport is desirable. :)
VIO C — Google review
Such a great place to visit during the sunset. Our guide made a reservation so we got a table just by the balcony. It gets busy but well worth it. The food is great, a fusion between African and western cuisine. It does get cold since it’s on the edge cliff so bring warm clothes however the restaurant provided us with blankets also.
J.M.G — Google review
Incredible architecture and views from this restaurant (sadly you cannot see the churches from here though). The Scottish owner, Susan, is also lovely to talk to and service is good - our lunch was very slow due to a number of tour groups being there. Because the churches are closed between 12 and 2pm I suspect the restaurant is always busy at these times. Fresh juice was delicious. Also it is reassuring that they use boiled water to wash their vegetables. The food was all right but go for the views and the experience.
V C — Google review
Absolutely a great place whether you come here for the panoramic view, food, architectural playfulness of the restaurant itself or a stroll. It gets busy towards sunset, but you will get your food/drink. An excellent spot for reading a book quietly in the morning or admiring the view in solitude.
P. I — Google review
This restaurant isn’t the most popular in town for no reason. The food is great—don’t miss the Ethiopian Shepherds Pie for sure—but you’ll stick around for the atmosphere. Susan, the Scottish proprietor, is lovely to chat with. Overall a great experience each of the three times we are here. Note that service is slow when they are just opening for breakfast or when they are slammed at peak meal times.

The Tomb of Adam, located in Lalibela, Ethiopia, is a site with a fascinating historical connection to the original place in Jerusalem. According to Christian tradition, it is believed that the tomb of Adam is situated in Jerusalem under the place where Jesus was crucified. Lalibela is often referred to as the 'second Jerusalem' and includes its own version of the tomb of Adam.
Really its an interesting and surprised having historical relationship with the original place. Christian tradition generally places the tomb of Adam in Jerusalem under the place where Jesus was crucified, called the "Cave of Treasures". Lalibela is just considered as the the second Jerusalem and also include the tomb of adam. I observe the place during my visit to the place.

When Jerusalem was captured, the Ethiopians needed to make copies of all the holy places in Jerusalem, so they made a place called the tomb of Adam (Original) Интересно, что гробница Адама, это всего лишь формальное название. Когда Иерусалим был захвачен эфиопам надо было сделать копии всех святых мест Иерусалима, вот и сделали место, которое назвали гробница Адама

Church
Bet Denagel, also known as Bet Danaghel, is a small chapel located in the southern side of Bete Maryam's courtyard in Lalibela. Unlike the more famous churches in the area, this tiny rock church has been spared from metal roofing, allowing for better observation of its cruciform columns and unique corner capitals. The chapel features a representation of St. George fighting the dragon and offers just enough space for a few benches.
Definitely worth the visit - it’s a site to behold !

(Translated by Google) Small rock church, or rather chapel, on the edge of the more famous Bete Maryam and fortunately spared from the horrendous metal roofing that characterizes the most famous churches of Lalibela and therefore better observable. It has cruciform columns and curious corner capitals that are often found in other rock churches in the area. Really very suggestive. Visiting the site is essential. Even the sight of the faithful in prayer is exciting...

Yemrehana Krestos Church, a stunning example of late-Aksumite architecture, is a hidden gem in Ethiopia that deserves more visitors. Unlike the famous rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, this remarkable structure was built rather than excavated, showcasing an impressive facade made from alternating layers of wood and stone. Dating back nearly 1,000 years and possibly predating Lalibela's churches by up to 80 years, it serves as a fascinating blueprint for architectural excellence.
This cave church built before 1000 years ago by King Yemrehane with marvilous architecture concept.you want to see place get ready for almost 2km stair to walk until the cave entrance. After you visit the church you should try the local food callef"dikus" made of hot pepper.

Long walk. Up hill for a small church. Good colors and drawings there. Make sure you see all the skeletons in the back of the cave.

Yimrehana krestos church Is one of among lalibela rock hewn churches! It's built thousand years ago by the king yimrehana kirstos! It's far away 40 or 50 kilometers from lalibela town!

It's about 1.5hrs drive from lalibella via bad roads. Transport for a private minibus should be not more than 1200 birr. Landrover not more than 1500 birr. Entrance fee for the church is 300 birr per person. A guide is around 500 Birr per group. The church is different to the churches in lalibella and the oldest in the region so it is worth the trip.

Worthwhile seeing on holidays, very busy and heavily congested with much traffic. I had to track through the mountains. For over an hour To get to the site.
