Museum
Nestled in the heart of Saint-Étienne, the Musée de la Mine stands as a testament to France's rich mining heritage. This remarkable attraction showcases the last operational mine in the region, which ceased its activities in 1973. Visitors can embark on an immersive journey through a reconstructed tunnel that vividly illustrates what life was like for miners during the 20th century. The museum employs modern museography to present the history of coal mining engagingly and informatively.

(Translated by Google) The waitress (brunette with medium-short hair, tattooed) was TOP! Very welcoming, smiling and very helpful (do not hesitate to offer an elderly lady to take her arm to accompany her to her table). The little kid in training too. In short, professional and competent staff. As for the meal, I admit that I didn't appreciate not having a choice of meat accompaniments. Vegetables were compulsory. Otherwise you would have to take a more expensive menu...Moreover on Sunday the choice is reduced, if we had had these 2 pieces of information we would not have come. The meal and dessert were satisfying.

(Translated by Google) A little local history. There are better and more documented ones in the nearby area. Finally, it's good to have a different and perhaps less touristy vision of working life in the Loire region. This city 🏙, linked to Saint Etienne Métropole, does not communicate much about its heritage. As a result, it remains a sort of cultural niche that is well hidden and not even known to all the inhabitants. What is the municipality trying to do? Building 🏢 quite poorly maintained and highlighted. (Original) Un peu d'histoire locale.

Stadium
Soccer field
Nestled in the heart of Saint-Étienne, Guichard Stadium, affectionately known as "Le Chaudron" or "L'Enfer Vert," is a must-visit for sports enthusiasts and culture seekers alike. This historic venue has been the home ground for AS Saint-Etienne since the 1930s and serves as a vibrant hub for rugby union matches and concerts too.
Still the greatest stadium in France 😁 Such an atmosphere and public support 🟢 ⚪
Jacques F — Google review
Great atmosphere (well, it is the Rugby World Cup!), well organised, and easy to navigate. If I lived closer, I would come to support Les Verts!

Beautiful Saint Etienne stadium
Bebop P — Google review
Quite an iconic stadium that still retains old-school appearance. You can feel the passion that the locals have for this club.
Oneofthebhoys — Google review
Great stadium for watching an ASSE football match. It was easy to get tickets online. We were about 2,5 hours in advance of the game and it was very easy to park (on a sunday) the car near the stadium for free. Via the tram line T1 and T2 you are in 15 minutes in the city centre. The atmosphere in the stadium is great. The ultra's behind the goal are singing all match while the match was not even that good. I think the fans/club got some kind of penalty because one of the stands was completely empty (home match against Brest) and there were some chants against people in Paris I understood 😉. The stadium itself is a very new and modern stadium and offers all facilities needed. Therefore all credits to the ASSE fans as in the newer stadiums these days it is not that easy to create a good atmosphere. Allez les Verts!
J L — Google review
Easily accessible and excellent view from all seats. Plenty of buses and trams away at the end.
Engee001 — Google review
This was my first time here and the fans put on quite a show before the match. Bothe teams played their hearts out and it was a great atmosphere.
Michael T — Google review
Great stadium with easy access by foot, tram, tain or bus but i wouldnt recomend cars. Down side, food and drink very expensive, two small waters and a packet of m&m's over £10.

Musée d'Art et d'Industrie

Mentioned on

Museum
Art museum
The Musée d'Art et d'Industrie, housed in a grand 1861 mansion, offers a captivating journey through the local design history. The museum showcases an array of artifacts including weapons, textiles, and bicycles that trace the city's industrial past. Visitors can explore the three-story layout and delve into the underground basement to discover antique bicycle prototypes, providing insights into the technical evolution of bicycles and the history of bicycle manufacturing in Saint-Etienne during the 1800s.
The best place to learn about the history and cultural heritage of Saint Etienne. There are exhibits on sports, arms manufacture and textile manufacture: the three things that constitute the most important part of Saint Etienne's culture. The building is beautiful and it feels calm and peaceful to sit outside in the garden.
Sinjini — Google review
What a wonderful museum! History of bicycle and weaving technologies engaged one in the rich industrial heritage of the region. Great bookshop. Excellent proximity to other spots which should be on your list to visit like the big indoor market & restaurants and cafes under glass. And I got to see displays and explanations of the origin of the Jacquard Loom punch cards which were the basis of the Hollerith cards used in the early days of programming computers! I learned programming on punch cards in the late 1970’s and there they were from hundreds of years ago. Wonderful, wonderful, eye opening experience.
Kevin D — Google review
I'd highly recommend to visit with a guide to see how the Jacquard machine function in 1808. It has stunning collections and well introduces the development of Saint Etienne.
Salut G — Google review
Lots of items, but the curator should be fired. Absolutely no structured narrative or anything that would capture young imaginations. Many information screens didn't work, and despite displaying an English language symbol, that didn't work either. You'd think that with Saint Etienne hosting four Rugby World Cup games and nearby Lyon another five over a month that the cities would have prepared their cultural centres for visits... The "Cafe" is two vending machines, one for Coffee the other for Snacks...
Ronan B — Google review
I had no idea that there were such beautiful museums in Saint-Etienne, and this one was one of the best. If you're a bicycle, industrial and arms history, you should definitely visit Musée d'Art et d'Industrie.
Carine M — Google review
Lots of cool stuff regarding Saint-Étienne’s industrial history. There were three exhibits when I went: bicycles, ribbons, and guns. I was here just under two hours, it’s great for a rainy day.

Located less than an hour's drive from Lyon, the Planétarium de Saint-Étienne offers a unique and educational experience for families. What sets this planetarium apart is its vast astronomical database, which allows it to project over 100,000 stars and small bodies within the solar system.
What a gem of a discovery! Less than an hours drive from Lyon, it may be small but really delivers on entertainment & education. It pays to reserve your session ahead of your visit - just in case. Its a small theatre & very popular with families. We watched a session about dinosaurs & then were given an awesome intro into the night sky via interesting & highly informative factoids which the kids (& parents!) thoroughly enjoyed. We highly recommend this place to families!

Fascinating to learn about the great history of the AS Saint Etienne. The tour is multilingual and the lady at the reception desk couldn't of been more helpful. Art Museums
Nestled on Rue Fernand Léger, the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain is a treasure trove for art enthusiasts, showcasing an impressive collection that spans the 20th century and contemporary eras. This architectural gem boasts one of Europe's largest collections of modern art and design, featuring over 15,000 works. Each year, visitors can explore around 15 exhibitions that delve into significant artistic trends through both permanent displays and thematic showcases.
Expansive spaces showcase a broad and deep collection. Great curatorial prowess evident in each presentation of work. Nice notations and explanation are very helpful for contextualizing where an artist’s work fits within the field of modern and contemporary art movements, ideologies, projects, collectives. Funky gift store and high class bookstore rounds out the experience. Plan to go to their on-site restaurant /cafe for breakfast or lunch - even the gastronomy is well curated!
Kevin D — Google review
Saw the Marcelle Caen exhibition. It was interesting but not breathtaking. The lighting of the art is often very poor. Don‘t drive more than 100km to see it though. I gave 4 stars for the venue, not the exhibition in itself.

The Museum’s space itself, wow !! The staff was friendly & helpful (even asked me if I was eligible for a discount 😮, being in New York for a long time, it’s like… ehhh, what ? what ?) Artwork looked amazing and very nicely displayed. Entrance fee $6.5 (again if you’re coming from NY….) At the end of my journey, I picked up my bag from the locker and there it was… a coffee maker (literally every type of ☕️ you wanted) for a whopping 0.50 cents (again NY…). Artwork collection: Highly Recommended !!
Toon T — Google review
The collections were good and there were descriptions in both French and English for almost all the exhibits. Did find it hard to actually navigate through the museum but that was just a minor setback, biased review because I love museums.

I really enjoyed my time at the museum. I think it’s a must if you are in the city. They speak English. For some reason I thought it was going to be larger. But the exhibitions were really cool. I also loved the museum shop and spent a long time looking at all the books and cool stuff that they sell.

We had a very bad experience with this restaurant. In Google was pointed out that the restaurant is open till 23:30 and after 20 20-minute walk they told us they are closed because the restaurant is full which wasn't true. They had only 6 tables booked. So we had to rush to find another place for dinner.

Such a pretty place. Husband highly rated his burger and cafe gourmand. I had the morels on toast with salad and ended with a giant profiterole. Everything was delicious.

We ate there on Friday 13th June. Food and service was excellent. As usual!

Very beautiful restaurant with amazing rustic decoration, the service was excellent and welcoming. The amount of food is great and taste as well. Thank you very much! PS: I strongly recommend the “Canon des fondues” aperitive drink 👌🏽

We booked in advance but I made a mistake and they have been so kind to let us have a table anyway! Food was super! Service as well!

I never ate such a great raclette, it was incredible!
Federico R — Google review
The worst part of going out to dinner is being mistreated. The first problem it's not the price of the dish, or the number of people. It's ordering the same plate multiple times, but the amount of the food being almost the SAME. But worst of all is my friend being so mistreated here by the responsible. So unprofessional blaming the client, with not related arguments like price, what we ate, or thinking that is our first restaurant in France. An attitude of a one-star restaurant that how they acted
Vitor S — Google review
Nice place and typical food with an original raclette
Antonio C — Google review
We were in a large group, so we ordered four of the chocolate fondue. We received two of the same amount of fondue that a friend of mine received when he ordered one. And we were charged for four fondues, when actually we received two. They gave us less food and charged the same. I dont recomend.

The waiter seemed annoyed by anything we requested. Service is bad, but location is central and compensates.

Restaurant Un Eléphant dans Un Jeu de Quilles offers a modern take on Auvergne cuisine, respecting its cultural history. The dinner experience is characterized by light dishes with well-balanced flavors and an absurdly delightful dessert. The pistachio and myrtille cake stands out as extraordinary. The service is commendable, while the ambiance is charming and the staff friendly.
Charming staff, very tasty food, nice ambiance, excellent

This is definitely a must-visit place in Saint-Étienne. The dinner menu is quite expensive, however, lunch prices are more than reasonable. Food was unique and delicious and the staff was very friendly.
Lucas L — Google review
Modern oriented cuisine with the right amount of respect for cultural history of the Auvergne region. Diner was light, flavours well balanced and desert was absurd ... In a good way. The pistachio and myrtille cake was extraordinary. I really would like to have the recipe as it would ben a hit to make at home. Service was also really good.

A very good little restaurant with nice atmosphere and friendly staff. You have always tree different starters, main dishes and deserts to choose from. So you can combine them into something you like. The menu is in French and French only, which means that if you do not speak the language you're in for a surprise dinner.

Food tastes superb! It’s one of the best restaurants in Saint Étienne. Considering food quality and price, it is much more than worth. Plus, good services and staff.

Great place. Good Food. Elegant Presentation. Fair Price. Customer Service could be improved, but I may have different perspective since I’m Mexican.
Rubén V — Google review
Absolutely amazing restaurant! The atmosphere, service, and food were all top-notch. Everything was full of flavor and beautifully presented. Definitely a place I’d recommend to anyone looking for a great dining experience.

Beautiful place . We were there having dinner and was fantastic. You can order single plates or can choice among three different menus. We opted for the intermediate 25eur menus and was fabulous. For the dessert they offer a great variety of cakes or an impressive selection of French cheeses.
Juan N — Google review
Nice menu fair price, personnel friendly. Food is good and very nicely présentation. But to be great miss a little more attention and care for ingredients selection. I definitely recommend this restaurant. Have a good time
Oliviero M — Google review
Great hidden gem in St Étienne! Not the town you'd think of when you think of upper scale dining but wow! Would have cost 30% more in Lyon and twice as much in Paris. Highly recommend!
Ben N — Google review
We booked a table for 2. Appaling welcome. Too busy for caring for us, they gave us a small table in a cramped sad room close to a group of 16. We request a better table in the nicest area. They told us it is all full. Those people also have booked like you. Very unfriendly. We left to go to Globe city Brasserie. I will avoid Escargot d'or in the future.
Denis B — Google review
Huge portions of well cooked food in this little place. I'm a reasonably big eater and had no room for dessert both times I ate here. Tournedos is huge and cooked just as you order it. Trilogy of salmon is also recommended, good portion, low on carbs but well prepared salmon. Add to that the friendly banter by the staff both in French and English and it's a place I'd happily eat again

Excellent food and lovely waiters. A smooth background music is the only thing I missed !
Toni L — Google review
Possibly one of the best dining experiences I've ever had - great service, super interesting dishes, and so much to the complex meals beyond the two courses I ordered. The cheese cart alone would be worth coming back for!
Aaron M — Google review
The food was very good, except the lobster dish, all the other dishes were perfectly done and served. Before the sunset, it is quite nice to sit inside and look at the gulf court and trees but when dark, it looks like a space in an hotel. The team was very friendly but most of them could not communicate in English and they have no English menu. Probably, their customers know French, good for them 😃 I believe a Michelin restaurant should have at least a simple print of the menu in English.

The food was ok but the service was absolutely awful. Some of the dishes we ordered didn't arrive at our table and the waiter, rudely claimed that they had been served. This led to an argument because not only did we not eat but they also wanted to charge us. Really bad service.

Disappointing. Less tasty than a few years back. Many of the items from the Menu and à la Carte were missing the evening we visited. Why adding some tasteless tomato dices for decoration especially in winter? Mushroom morilles sauce without Morilles, sad. Too much garlic in the Gratin Dauphinois.

Nice food, we had the sharing platter but to be honest it was too much. That's probably not a negative though. Not every dish was to our taste, but again not a negative as we were up for trying something different.

I have been to lots of Syrian & Lebanese restaurants and by far this the best in the loire province.. tasty food and nice place to have a dinner in with family as well as friends. I’ve been there for like 10 times so far so I know what I’m talking about. The staff is friendly. They have lots of options esp. for vegans. Quality/ price ratio is faire enough ( not expensive as compared to service ). I highly recommend this mediterranean Syrian Resturant.
Fahd A — Google review
There's nothing to criticise about the restaurant itself. The service is extremely good as is the food. My main issues that it's probably 50% more expensive than similar restaurants so I wont return
Ian D — Google review
I had loveliest experience here as always .The food tasted very good.Previously it was named Lal Qilla and I thought it's taste would be changed now but it still tasted the same(great) 👍
Sikandar A — Google review
Nice and warm place, delicious courmet!
TING H — Google review
Very tasty food! Fairly inexpensive as well. Plenty of vegan options, which is rare for restaurants around here. The only thing that can be improve is the service. We waited for a long time before someone took our order. No water was served, we had to help ourselves. The cutleries and napkins arrived after the food. No big deal, just that we were very hungry and impatient. :) The food was worth the wait.

Just ate here for the first time and wow 🤩 The food was delicious, the Shish tawook and Toum was just like the ones I tasted in Syria 🇸🇾 and Lebanon. Bravo Chef, I’ll be back with more friends.

Transportation in Saint-Etienne

Getting around Saint-Etienne can be a little daunting if you’re new here. We can help list some of the major public transportation methods if you don’t want to rely on a car.

Nearby airports

Lyon Airport

Airport
International airport
Lyon-Saint Exupéry Airport is a modern air hub with three terminals and two runways. It offers express links to Lyon city center and winter ski resort shuttles, making it convenient for travelers. The airport is easy to navigate, and getting to Lyon city center involves taking the tram, which takes about an hour in total. Travelers can save money by purchasing tickets online in advance.
Excellent AirPort. Easy access with public transportation, both train and buss. Very fast security checking and even fast track available allowing 5 min pass through. Small restaurants and shops.
Jani V — Google review
The airport is modern and well-signposted, which makes navigating between terminals relatively easy. The Rhônexpress tram connection to Lyon is convenient, albeit quite expensive. Security was efficient, and the staff were mostly polite. However, the waiting areas could use more seating, especially during peak times. Some facilities (like charging stations and restrooms) felt a bit limited or outdated for an international hub. Food and drink options are also pricey, and there aren’t many affordable choices once you’re past security. Overall, it’s a functional airport with good connections, but it lacks the comfort and service level of other major European airports.
Mohamed F — Google review
I’m deeply grateful to the accessibility team at Lyon Airport. Unfortunately, my ski trip ended with two fractures and surgeries, and I had to return to Dublin while still recovering. Everything was so well organized, and I truly appreciated the lift that brought me directly onto the plane, I wouldn’t have been able to manage stairs on my own. In moments like this, accessibility isn’t just helpful — it’s essential. Thank you for making a stressful situation so much easier and more dignified.
Anna K — Google review
Without problems getting through security, but almost thought I was going to miss my flight due to the extremely slow service of customs! The r-gates were broken, so all EU and non EU passport holders were required to see an agent and there were only TWO! One of which frequently left his booth and processed passports significantly slower than his counterpoint. Waited a very long time and the stress was a lot, I don’t recommend this airport for travel outside of the EU. Otherwise, the airport is fine.
Hak B — Google review
Similar experience as arriving in a developing country, like the times I visited Central America. Flights are always delayed d/t “bad weather” and I fly at least once a month. The ground staff are never ready for the planes so passengers are waiting for them after landing. Immigration hall is basic, no temperature control, and they have 2 immigration officer for multiple flights. Avoid if you can!
Andrea L — Google review
Quite poor sadly, took absolutely ages to get through passport control, 1 person for 100- 200 people, the food was okay and somewhat okay variety but not incredible Could do with more time in the ai port rather than waiting in queues All fast tracks were closed despite lots of people paying premium for it Had lot of closures Had to leave to re check in our bags for our connecting flights sadly Trip to Toulouse was great though
Jack R — Google review
One hour delay on the way in and out due to passport control, there is not enough people on to check the passports, very frustrating, its not like this could not be foreseen. Otherwise it's a pleasant airport. I note the response from the airport recommending passengers arrive earlier for flights than in other airports. I don't believe the answer is to ask your clients to wait longer but rather to ensure the right amount of people are available to do the required tasks to minimise wait time.
M A — Google review
It would have been the best airport if there were no senseless checks on arrival from a EU Schengen country - for example from Barcelona. Good empty resting areas on departures with chargers, smoking room, poke bowl with coke for 10€, friendly staff on the checks. Shuttle busses to parking and rent a car companies every 10 minutes. However, security checks on arrival took longer than all the time spent on departing.
