Nestled at the base of Mount Hodo, Hodosan Shrine is a revered religious site with a rich history dating back to 111. This shrine boasts intricate carvings and a main hall that was reconstructed during the early Meiji Period. It is also famous for its association with the legendary hero Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, who is rumored to have bathed in a nearby pond.
Chasing autumn leaves, arrived around 6 PM. The temple was lighted up and we had the rare pleasure of sharing this with just a few others. Only November!
Celia — Google review
Visited on 6 Nov. Autumn leaves for this year are late, so the shrine is not so pretty. Nevertheless the shrine is still impressive
Cher K — Google review
Surrounded by very tall trees. Parking is easy.
Boon L — Google review
Absolutely worth coming to see the plum blossoms! It was my first time witnessing such beautiful and fragrant plum blossoms – truly delightful. Taking the ropeway round trip costs 600 yen, and if you come by car, parking is 500 yen. I highly recommend coming here to relax; starting from January, you can enjoy the plum blossoms, and they should be in full bloom by February.
Ambrose S — Google review
Beautiful, well-maintained shrine. Momiji making it even better. 10-15 min walk from Nagatoro station, slightly uphill. We went on a Saturday morning a bit earlier than most of the crown. At around 11am as we were departing, more people are pouring in so I think it can get crowded on weekend peak hours.
Xyra N — Google review
A really well cared for, clean and beautiful. Free parking at the bottom of the shrine. Not very stroller friendly because if the stairs and pebbles so baby carry or walking is best.
Danielle M — Google review
Quiet place. The shrine is very beautiful and same with all places in Japan very clean and organize. A lot of parking spots. A quick tour will be sufficient.
Kevin R — Google review
Hodosan shrine enshrines the Emperor Jimmu who founded Japan. I instantly felt an atmosphere, enhanced by the shinto music playing on the grounds, as we approached the torii of the shrine. The benevolence of the shrine is believed to be protection from disasters. It is a common place for hikers to pay homage as one of the three Kami (Gods / Deity) enshrined here is a mountain deity. But it is also because the shrine has a sub branch at the top of Mt Hodo - hikers pray at the base shrine and then climb to the top of Mt Hodo and devote there too. The architecture of the almost 2000 year old shrine is magnificent. The various auxiliary shrines are impressive too. And the grounds are beautiful. It is easily accessible by public transport too, as you can walk up from Nagatoro station in about 10 to 15 minutes.

Nagatoro Iwadatami

Mentioned on

Scenic spot

Geologic Formations
Nagatoro Iwadatami is a stunning forested river canyon with layered rock formations, offering activities like wooden-boat cruises, rafting, and hiking. The 6-km long Nagatoro Valley is designated as a place of scenic beauty and natural monument.
The place is not a day trip from Haneda Airport, but can be reached in less than two hours from Omiya, a city in Saitama Prefecture, or from lodgings in the retro area (by train). The shaved ice here is very famous, but you will have to wait more than 2 hours for your order. The fresh greenery in Saitama can be enjoyed from late April. Summer is very hot and humid. The best time to visit is in May, before the rainy season starts.
The W — Google review
Scenic spot with rock formations and a cool river. You can buy tickets for rafting and riding a boat but the lines are long.
レハ — Google review
When you walk far away enough from the area everyone is in, it is a nice place to relax and watch some frogs. If you move the frogs will bury themselves underground, but if you stay very still, they'll emerge, and they are very cute. It seems you can ride boats here too, but it's just a nice place to walk along the river really.
Hercules W — Google review
A really beautiful place to have a stroll around. Trails are parallel to the river with many spots to sit and have a snack, take pictures and look at the beautiful river view.
Matan K — Google review
Too many tourists. I haven't been out much this past 10 years in Japan. It was a shock. The area is picturesque, and a nice drive, lots of winding roads (if you like that sort of thing). The actual area around the one little rocky outcrop, it's your regular fare of touristy shops. Nothing I would write home about. The boat rides were also busy. I don't really see it as a too relaxing. I think there are better places to enjoy the water and solitude.
MR. R — Google review
It is an unusual terrain with a series of huge rock formations. There are many people near the boat pier, but as you move away from that area, the number of people decreases. It is a very relaxing place rich in nature. The kids enjoyed their rocky adventure. We can find many tadpoles and frogs here. The view of the boats on the river is also beautiful. The boats are very popular and you may have to wait in line for quite a while to get tickets.
Rintaro — Google review
Saitama is quite far, but definitely a unique experience! Its beauty and simplicity makes the place even better. It’s also a great place for adventure, as there are many different things to explore.
Larissa G — Google review
Beautiful place to enjoy the nature. But not really recommended to visit in winters (of course you can just mark it off on the checklist). Preferably go in spring/summer. DON'T do the boat ride. It's so useless. 1000 yen for a 20 minutes ride. They may shorten the ride according to them but will not change the price. NOT WORTH. Other than that, great place to enjoy nature and good food.

The energy of river, rapids and gorge meets the platform here; the station hums with summer laughter, autumn leaves and hikers’ boots. You feel the world push forward but the train holds you still, poised between thrill and calm. Tourist Tip: From the station it's a short walk to the river-cruise boarding point or rock walk. Consider staying late for sunset over the gorge if your schedule allows.

Mountains
Hodosan, also known as Chichibus Mt. Hodosan, is a 1,631-ft. mountain in Nagatoro area that offers a variety of attractions for visitors. The mountain features a colorful shrine and is famous for its beautiful flowers, including wintersweet, plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and azaleas. Visitors can take an aerial tramway to the summit to enjoy the stunning views and vibrant blooms.
Gorgeous autumn colors and there were groves of plum (ume) trees on the top of the mountain so spring would be lovely, too! Highly recommend it.
Joelle K — Google review
A colorful shrine, mountain hiking, richly flavored mushroom soup (at the entrance to the cable car), and a cable car ride to the top to see the plum blossoms. This early in the season (end of February) it’s mainly the yellow plum blossoms, but by mid-March the pink, red, and white blossoms should be in full bloom. Have a bowl of fresh mushroom soup before riding the cable car and if you’re still hungry there is charcoal roasted ayu (a river fish similar to trout). Or, wait till you get to the top of the mountain and have a bowl of soba, udon, or ramen. Access by car (about 90 minutes north of Tokyo in Saitama Prefecture) or by train (free shuttle from the train station to the cable car base). Makes for a nice day trip, plenty of outdoor open space, and if you have youngsters they’ll enjoy the cable car ride).

Enjoying the quick mountain trekking at the Mt. Hodo in Nagatoro area. It was so good to have the curry lunch in the Trangia messtins. It was amazing to see the autumn colors on the surface of hot coffee and the winter cherry blossom.

Former Arai Family Residence

Mentioned on

Local history museum
Sights & Landmarks
Historic Sites
Former Arai Family Residence is a historic site dating back to the Edo period, once belonging to the village headman. The building features chestnut boards and a shingled roof, offering visitors a glimpse into traditional architecture. Designated as a nationally important cultural property, it was constructed during the era of the 8th Shogun Yoshimune and relocated in 1975. The residence requires an admission fee for entry and is located near Nagatoro Town Local Museum.
The Former Arai Family Residence is a beautiful and well-maintained silkworm raising farmhouse (古民家 kominka). It’s very worthwhile to get a guided tour, which is free as long as the museum staff have time to take you around. It’s ¥200 entry and located behind the Nagatoro Town Museum which is included in the price. There is parking right outside which is shared with Nagatorogura, the sake brewery which is across the carpark. This farmhouse was originally located on the other side of town closer to Nogami I believe, but was donated to the town and moved to this location for public display. When the authorities discovered the Arai farmhouse had been renovated three times they restored it to its original condition. The Arai family were silkworm farmers and the history is fascinating. Imagine the whole first floor covered in silkworms munching away at a whole bunch of leaves! During this period the family slept upstairs. The farmhouse looks out over an aspect of farmland and has a stand of bamboo next to it, so it’s very natural and serene. In spring the farmland is dotted with cherry trees in bloom between the fields. See if you you find where the hidden newlyweds bedroom is - let’s just say that the door that looks like a cupboard well, it’s not a cupboard! Well worth a visit.
Joelle K — Google review
A good place to go if you are into the history of Nagatoro. Entry fee is 200yen. The display area of the tools the people used and the history and geography of the area were interesting. The house itself is just so-so.

(Translated by Google) Visited on March 24, 2023. A farmhouse from about 250 years ago with a shingle roof? Or cedar bark? The stone on top is impressive, and there is only one tatami room, and the rest is a board room. The floor plan is simple, there is no privacy at all, and the bathroom is exposed. It is interesting to think about the lifestyle and consciousness of those days. (Translated by Google) The building of an old sericulture farm was relocated from near the town hall, and although it had been renovated twice, it is displayed almost in its original form. (It seems that high windows were added after the renovation) It has a very old-fashioned appearance, with a shingle roof covered with stones. It is possible to take a stroll around the building except for the Okunodee (Okuma) and the second floor. Although the roofs and scales are different, I felt that there were many places with similar structures, such as the chaya Honjin near Gunma Yokogawa, where there was a stable inside the house and the location of the bath. From the deck, you can see the bamboo forest outside, which gives it a nice atmosphere.

I like it because it is healthy and there are different variations of Tofu that is served. All good! I had the dessert but could not finish since the meal was filling! The cheesecake was good though. 🙂

Best restaurant in Nagatoro. There are many restaurants in this area. However at restaurant served poor dishes. But this restaurant served healthy and yummy foods. In noon time you have to wait more than 15 min. But if you don’t want to wait you book a table. They served only one lunch plate. All foods made by tofu. So you can enjoy traditional style healthy Japanese cuisine.

This charming eatery specializes in handmade soba noodles and crispy tempura, making it an ideal stop for families, thanks to its tatami dining area complete with toys for kids. Great service. Awesome food. Interestingly enough 、everyone in town we asked for a recommendation kept pointing at this place... i thought it was a little strange until we actually tried the food. No wonder.... fantastic. They even have Thomas the train for your toddler. Totally recommended indeed. We went twice.

Very delicious nabe udon! The food felt very wholesome. It was a bit chilly today during the wintersweet festival so it was really nice to have a warm bowl of nabe udon. The noodles were delicious and I felt warmed from the inside out. I highly recommend this place.

We love this place! The food is yummy, the family who run it are kind and there are toys for kids! It is up a steep flight of stairs so you’ll have to carry your stroller up if you brought one, but our little ones like to run around on the tatami area and it’s kind on the budget, too.

The staff's service spirit is amazing, and if you run out of water even a little, they'll refill it right away, just like wanko soba. lol As for the food, as others have said, the volume is about 1.5 times what you would expect. I don't think it would be a problem for adult men, but it may be difficult for people who eat little or children to finish it all. The taste is very delicious.

Japanese restaurant
Soba noodle shop
Nestled just a short five-minute stroll from Nagatoro Station, お食事 見晴 (Miharashi) is a delightful dining spot that offers not only delicious food but also breathtaking views of the surrounding rock formations and river. The restaurant features a spacious interior with tatami-style seating, allowing guests to relax comfortably while enjoying their meals.
(Translated by Google) As the store name suggests, the view is great. The salt-grilled sweetfish was delicious and I could eat it from the head on. The rice cooked with sweetfish was also delicious. The miso potatoes also had a fun texture, probably because the potatoes were crispy fried. I had good memories of being able to charge my smartphone and being served soup even though it was a set meal for one person (^^)✨ (Original)

Taste was good. We only had shaved iced, so cannot comment on the food taste. Price is slightly high but it's expected as it is located right next to the river. The restaurant itself was clean but the restroom was not. Overall we recommend this place for a short brake while enjoying the river.

(Translated by Google) It's about a 5-minute walk from Nagatoro Station. You can see the rock formations from the window, so the view is amazing. Before we were seated, they told us it would take about 20 minutes for our food to be served, so we waited leisurely while sipping on Chichibu Cider. I had a soba noodle set and grilled sweetfish. The sweetfish was freshly grilled, and the deep-fried smelt was also piping hot and delicious. It was delicious paired with a local Chichibu beer. Thank you for the meal. It has a spacious interior where you can take off your shoes and eat in a tatami-style room, so even a large number of people could fit in relatively quickly. If you sit by the window, you can see the river and, at this time of year, cherry blossoms here and there, which is wonderful. There was a wide variety of menu items using sweetfish, and drinks such as cider and craft shochu high that were related to Chichibu! Soba noodle shop
Toraya is a charming soba restaurant that offers an authentic Japanese dining experience. Guests are invited to remove their shoes and enjoy their meal in a serene tatami room, surrounded by beautiful decor and a picturesque garden adorned with autumn leaves. The ambiance is enhanced by soothing background music, making it the perfect spot for relaxation. Although the restaurant serves only about 30 portions of soba each day—prompting early visits to avoid disappointment—the quality of the food makes it worthwhile.

(Translated by Google) Although the building and interior are not bad, the menu is extremely small and there are no options, there are no specialties that will satisfy everyone, the soba is medium, the soup has a weird sour taste and is tasteless, and the spicy radish has no spiciness. Well, the yam doesn't go well with the soba, the sesame sauce has no aroma, and the quantity is small, and I can't find a single expensive element, but it's expensive. No wonder there were no other customers. Overall, it wasn't bad, but it didn't make me angry, so I'm giving it a 2 star rating, but if you're a student who doesn't have a lot of money, or a family with a lot of kids, you'll be extremely disappointed. We do not recommend this restaurant as it could ruin the memories of your trip. I was worried that the portions would be small, but I was relieved that the portions would be like this at a soba restaurant. I saw some reviews saying it was self-service, but they brought it to my seat, so I wonder if the service has changed. The taste was very country soba and it was delicious. The price is on the high side at around 1,700 yen, but it's worth it considering the Instagram-worthy interior. We came in around 12:00 on a weekday, but it seemed like we had run out of soba noodles, so it was closed for the day. They also have Japanese sake, so it might be a good place to enjoy sake and soba while enjoying the atmosphere. It was a restaurant that didn't give me as bad of an impression as the reviews said. The soybeans for the appetizer were homemade. Other dishes included local ingredients, like lemon from the Seto Inland Sea for the sorbet. Everything was delicious, and I was delighted. My pasta can also be ordered as a risotto. There were six two-person tables and a counter. I arrived almost as soon as the restaurant opened. Haneda Airport is a waterfront airport that serves the Greater Tokyo Area and offers direct rail access to the city, as well as free WiFi. Travelers can take the Keikyu Limousine Bus to Yokohama Station and transfer to the Yokosuka Line or Shonan Shinjuku Line to reach Kamakura Station, which takes about an hour.
I'm very impressed with Haneda T3 and it's very functional and easy. The place is massive but easy to find information. Access to departures is really easy. Inside, the departure area is massively long with a lot of shops. Mostly branded one, but there's also a nice food court with very reasonable prices, offering a lot of Japanese choices. This is my fifth time here, and I am finally doing my Google Review.

Flight was excellent, airport is massive but the process of getting off, going through customs and grabbing our luggage was phenomenal! So well organized. Be prepared to go through miles of transit to get places with very fast, paced people moving in a quick manner. Loved flying over the city before landing. Just amazing.

Haneda Airport is truly one of the best airports in the world. From the moment you arrive, everything feels seamless—clean, efficient, and well-organized. The signage is clear, making it easy to navigate even for first-time visitors, and security and immigration move quickly compared to many major airports. The terminals are modern, bright, and filled with a wide range of dining and shopping options, from authentic Japanese restaurants to luxury boutiques. The staff are courteous and attentive, always ready to help with a smile. Amenities like spotless restrooms, clean showers, and comfortable seating areas make layovers far more enjoyable. Transportation to and from the city is also incredibly convenient. Haneda combines Japanese hospitality with world-class efficiency, making travel smooth and stress-free.

Very efficient, don't have to walk as much to get to your departure gate, there are outlets for almost every seat at each gate if you want to charge your phone or PC, there is a hot water fountain if you have your own tea bags. On top of that, the airport is like a combination of Little Tokyo and a museum.
