Nature & Parks
National reserve
Okama, also known as Zao Okama, is a stunning emerald volcanic crater lake located on the Zao Mountains in Japan. It can be reached by road, hiking trail, or ski lift and offers rewarding views to those who make it to the top. The lake is famous for its ever-changing colors depending on the angle of sunlight and is surrounded by unique alpine dicentra flowers.
Took a ropeway from the zao village to the top and hiked for about one hr to reach the top. The hike is easy and scenic. The weather got too foggy as we reached the peak near the crater. So the view was blocked. It’s also quite windy up there.
Hanupya N — Google review
We arrived Okama on May 2nd as goldenweek holiday in Japan! We can drive up to the top by paying a ticket (800 yen per 1 car) It’s colder than we think, and the Okama is still full of snow!
Google review
The caldera lake is much larger in real, and it really leaves an impression. The altitude of the carpark is 1771 metres, so the mountain air is still refreshingly cool in midsummer.
Eugene W — Google review
Took bus here from Yamagata. Took 2 hours on the bus. Not many buses come here. Popular tourist location. Good scenario. Volcano lake. Walk around. Shrine. Good views
SL Y — Google review
Fantastic experience visiting Okama. Parked at the visitor center entrance, with a fee of Y550. Took us ~2 hours to hike up to the peak and to see the stunning views. Along the way to the peak, you would already see amazing views of the Gokishinuma (5 colored pond) that was caused by volcanic activities in the past. Definitely recommend to go!
Ryan P — Google review
Okama looks absolutely gorgeous in the early to mid April period, when the snow is partially covering the surrounding slopes, partly showing the brown earth below. Under a blue sky, this 残雪 (Zansetsu) scene offer in my opinion one of the best view of Okama. These are photos were taken at 13/4/2024 after a 45min hike from the Zao Jizo Sancho Station Something to take note of: (1) the last descending cable car leave at 4:45pm at this time of the year, (2) The trails are mostly covered under loose melting snow, those trail without snow are very muddy. Although I did it with just a gaiter and not fully waterproof shoe, I would strongly suggest good waterproof shoe, gaiter, snowshoe or trekking pole. (3) You can find the gps route and more hiking info from Yamap. (4) These photos were shot at the viewpoint just to the east of Kumanodake 熊野岳 which I think offer better scenery at this time of year compared to the more southern viewpoints.

I’ve skied at Zao several times, but this was my first summer visit. I have always wanted to hike and see Okama, and I would recommend this spot if you can. We drove up in a personal vehicle, but there are hiking trails and a chair lift a bit below the uppermost parking lot if you’re not driving. We also saw some cyclists biking up! There are many great hikes around, and of course, you can see the famous snow monsters without their snow!
Mary — Google review
It's a great place to visit. Emerald lake in volcano crater looks so magic.Amazing view from top of mountain. But Weather may be really unpredictable. So be aware about it and ready for any case. There are many ways to reach the place:by car, by free shuttle, by rope way or hiking. Parking place usually gets full very quickly,it's better to come before 10am. Hiking courses to the Okama crater are very good for any age and conditions. Never have try so enjoyable course.

Mount Zaō, located in the Zao mountain range near Yamagata City, offers a variety of activities throughout the year. In summer, visitors can enjoy hiking and breathtaking views of the surrounding area. The most prominent feature is the Okama crater lake, known for its stunning aquamarine color that changes throughout the day.
Incredible views. Interesting drive up the mountain. Had a wonderful day.
Elvis J — Google review
Ensure the day is not cloudy before visiting or you might not be able to see the caldera. However if there's clouds and thick fog you'll get a vision from buddhist hell meets Silent Hill, complete with piled stones, which is kind of spooky and cool in its own way.
Trilkk — Google review
This may be one of the most breathtaking places I have ever been in the world. Taking the cable car across the mountain top, and seeing the snow monsters appear from between the clouds was absolutely mind-blowingly beautiful! I cannot wait to return one day and relive this experience!

Severe snow storm. Did not see much. Only 2 with cameras brave the storm to take some pics. The rest sat at the restaurant.

A cable car ride to Zao Jizo Sancho Station at the summit of Mt.Zao. skiers and tourist use these lines to enjoy a bird's eye view of Mt. Zao. Also enjoy the famous frost-covered trees in winter or better known as Snow Monsters.

Zao Echo Line

Mentioned on
4 lists
Zao Echo Line is a well-known road that boasts of stunning scenery such as snow-covered landscapes, vibrant autumn colors, and scenic waterfalls. The road spans about 17 miles long and winds up to the sacred Caldera Lake, Okama. To reach this serene lake, visitors must navigate through a labyrinth of hairpin turns within a forest before ascending to Zao himself. The surrounding foliage in autumn is breathtakingly beautiful and provides a refreshing escape from the daily grind.
This is a great spot for a road trip to enjoy the autumn leaves. During my visit on October 13, 2024, the leaves hadn’t fully changed color yet, but it was still beautiful. The road trip was amazing, but due to overtourism, it took me almost 4 hours to reach Obama Crater, which was quite challenging. It’s definitely worth the visit, but be sure to plan your time wisely. Bring enough food, as it can be scarce in the area. Also, plan your trip to catch the sunset. There are enough parking lots available.
NNchan — Google review
12 Apr 2024: Enjoyed Zao Echo Line Snow Wall walk. It is not accessible by private car during this period but only through tour agency. The elevation is about 1500 meters. There are washroom at the parking area. Delicious hot onion soup and red-bean mochi were served at the parking area. They are free. A veteran guide was assigned to walk with us and provide information regards Zao Echo line. There was also free snow sled at parking area. It was a pleasant experience.
LG T — Google review
Visited this area at the start of May and the view was great! In my opinion, it is comparable to the Tateyama Snow Corridor (less snow but also much less crowded). It was still rather cold but there is a small shop selling hot drinks and snacks. :) Note: There is a small fee to pay (¥500, around USD3.50) for vehicles driving up.
Esther T — Google review
It is a rather long winding mountain road (about 17 miles in length) leading all the way up to the place near the crater lake, Okama. Autumn foliage on the road sides is awesomely gorgeous.
Urban K — Google review
A lot of corners. But it is worth it. There is a special lane closes at 4pm tho.

Today super cloudy with very low visibility… need to drive with extra care
J K — Google review
Rating is based on summer visit. Its very winding compared to other skylines and not a lot of unique scenery.
P R — Google review
A first, didn’t want post about this spot...just to keep a secret cuz I like it so much! It’s a sacred Caldera Lake guarded by a thousand Dragonfly and accessible only by going through a twisted maze of hairpins within a forest before ascending to Zao himself!!!

Sankai Falls

Sankai Falls are really pretty, especially viewed in the autumn foliage season.
Urban K — Google review
Nice place in nature .
Yataro O — Google review
(Translated by Google) A tiered waterfall with a total length of 180 meters that flows into Ishikozawa. The drop itself is 140m as measured by GPS. Although the scale is large, the flow is calm. There is a legend that the giant crab that lived in the basin of the waterfall fought with the giant eel of Sumikawa Fudo Falls. An observation deck and live camera are installed on the Echo Line. The bottom row can also be viewed behind the scenes. The waterfall is roughly divided into five stages. The lower stage F1 is a 60m waterfall, the middle stages F2 to 4 are about 5m each, and the upper stage F5 is a 25m straight waterfall. It is approximately 2.7km from Zao Nature House to the waterfall. It takes about 60 minutes by land, and about 120 minutes by going up the Sumi River. Start from the bunting course and arrive at Sumikawa in 1.2km. If you are going overland, cross the bridge and go to the nature research trail, or if you are going upstream, enter the valley from here. Neither part is particularly difficult. The land route crosses to the right bank at Ishikosawa Deai. Be prepared to get wet up to your knees. If you climb up Ishikozawa for about 5 minutes from the encounter, you will be in front of the lower waterfall. The third waterfall in the middle can be climbed directly, while the upper and lower waterfalls are winding. Both winded from the left bank, but the footprints are unclear. Since I didn't know the correct route, I mostly climbed up where I thought I could go, relying on standing trees. The upper level seems to get easier as you get further away from the flow. If traveling by land, wear clothes and shoes that are easy to move in. Going upstream and winding are the basic equipment for sawawa climbing, and rubber shoes are recommended for sawawa climbing. No ropes or climbing equipment were used. Parking is possible at Zao Nature House. There is also a toilet. It is a very nice spot, that offers amazingly pretty views of both Sankai Fall and Fudo Fall from a distance. Autumn foliage around the site is incredibly beautiful.

If you're on the Zao Echo Line going up to the Okama crater from the Miyagi side, you're going to pass this viewpoint so stop and take a look. The waterfalls do look spectacular in their isolation and inaccessibility.
Carl B — Google review
Impressive overlook where you can see two separate waterfalls with their various sections. Impressive to see the sheer distance this water travels coming down through mountain.
Josh D — Google review
Pretty good views of the falls. Sadly the sun was on the horizon at this time so it blinded the view somewhat.

On the way to Okama Crater, it’s worth a stop if the weather is clear. You can see two waterfalls and relax from a pretty tough drive.

Sumikawa Snow Park

Ski resort
Outdoor Activities
Ski & Snowboard Areas
Sumikawa Snow Park is a great ski resort suitable for skiers of all levels. In addition to the standard runs, there are tours available to nearby snow-covered fir trees known as "snow monsters." The park features unique courses that connect in various ways, ensuring that each run is exciting and different from the last. The difficulty of the slopes is perfectly balanced, making it neither too challenging for beginners nor too easy for intermediate snowboarders.
The music on the lift is the best! It really did set the perfect vibe for a great day! You can get food and drinks near the enterance and good portions aswell! dvending machine drinks were slightly expensive I didn't see English anywhere but I was lucky and received alot of help 👏 Prices are good for full rental set and lift-ride I think I paid $110AUD all up the rental and lift end at 4:00pm If you don't have a car buses can be a little difficult but taxi to Zao is very affordable if you miss the bus The staff was very nice all smiles and kind! lots of cute girls haha but there was one serious old man he worked too hard!
Travi P — Google review
Visited for snowshoe hiking. The rental prices were reasonable and the lift tickets are about what you'd expect. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable about the gear and the trails. Start early if you are hiking, as the trip took longer than we expected. It's an easy course for people with snowshoe hiking experience, but if you don't have any experience or only have regular hiking experience (me)...it's not exactly a beginner course. The views along the trail are breathtaking and totally worth the effort to make it to the shrine at the top of the mountain. Pictures simply don't do it justice. Weather conditions will greatly affect your hike, so plan for a sunny day and hope the weather keeps!
John B — Google review
The one star is given to the ski rental and the uncle there is helpful and friendly. Except for this, if you go snowboarding or skiing, please think twice. 1. Old school qr code lift ticket, inconvenient 2. Long and slow chair life, but flat and short slope, time wasting 3. No hot food was served, just a cold lunch box costing JPY1,500 I have never left a ski resort earlier and I did the first time here. Shame~
SIU H — Google review
Ride to Okama crater in Cat car is awesome. It takes 50 mins to 1 hr to reach Okama crater from Sumikawa snow park. They have 2 trips in day. 10:30 am and 1:00 pm. Good to take morning tour.
Nitin C — Google review
Sumikawa snow part is a great place for beginner and intermediate levels. The courses aren't too long, but not too short either. It has 3 lifts and about 6 groomed courses with some off course runs you can do if you're intermediate to advanced. It's also a snow park, so towards the bottom, when you get off the first lift, the are lots of ramps for jumping, rails, flat boxes and a few other additions as the snow starts to stack up. The snow park is easy to get to by car or by bus reservation from Sendai station. You have to call to make the reservation and the staff only speak Japanese. The bus leaves sendai station at 8:20 am and arrives there around 10:30am. It would've been nice to have an online reservation system with google docs. This way you can avoid the language barrier if you dont speak Japanese and it gives you an idea on how packed the bus will be for the day you want to go. You must call to reserve before 4 pm the day before you want to go, because that's when the park closes. There is no night riding like neighboring resort Eboshi or Spring Valley which you can see as you're on the bus heading there, but the price is cheaper here because of that. There are also tours you can take in the cat tractors or go snow shoeing to see the Zao Okama crater. About a 3 or 4 hour hike one way. One thing to note is that the Miyagi side of the Zao mountain range is cloudy more often than the Yamagata side. Overall it's a good mountain, cheap and easy to get to if you're in sendai. Oh, and there is a bus that will take you to an onsen town around 1:30 and will pick you up on its was back to sendai around 5.
Tevyn P — Google review
The snow park was great. The courses are perfect for beginners to intermediate level skiers and snowboarders. There are a lot of unique paths that connect the courses to make every run different and exciting. The difficulty curve is perfect, not to hard for beginners and not to easy for intermediate snowboarders. There is also a really good snowboard park with a good variety of jumps and some grinds. The cost is very affordable, and the slopes always have a good snow base. One thing to be careful about is the road to Sumikawa. It's very twisty and can be covered with some snow in February, making it slippery. So drive safe and have fun!
Chloe R — Google review
Have to take snow truck cruise during the winter. I just took one today. Wonderful. Too cold but the view is magnificent. Suggest reservation in at least 3 days ago and go through email if you can't speak Japanese 👍👍👍

I went to the snowmobile tour on the first weekend of Feburary. Due to the severe blizzard, we could not access to 'snow monster' area. But, the sightseeing was really nice and we can see trees fully frozen by ice due to the supercooling. The staff were passionate and nice. Plenty of snow is existed due to the high elevation. I hope to visit again for skiing.

The Kokeshi-kan museum is a fascinating place to explore Japanese art and handicrafts. Visitors can create their own dolls and paint kokeshi, enhancing the interactive experience. The exhibit is captivating, and the gift shop offers an excellent selection of items for purchase. Overall, it's a great destination for anyone interested in learning more about kokeshi or looking to purchase unique souvenirs.
I was visiting the area with no plans, and suddenly found this museum in a map at a store. I was so glad we went, it was so much fun. I'm not Japanese so learning about kokeshi was really interesting for me, but even my Japanese in-laws had a good time. Highly recommend.

Kaerazu Fall

Scenic spot
Nature & Parks
Waterfalls
Kaerazu Fall, also known as Fuka no Taki, is a stunning tiered waterfall with a 45m drop that flows into the Nigori River. It offers an impressive view from the Komakusadaira Observation Deck and is formed by water flowing from the Okama pot located upstream. The waterfall can be reached via a 2.5km trail from Sainoike entrance, taking approximately 70 minutes to reach.
A really awesome/impressive waterfall. Bravo!

(Translated by Google) A tiered waterfall with a drop of 45m that flows into the Nigori River. This waterfall was formed by water flowing from the Okama pot located upstream. Basically, it is a distant view from the observatory, but the view in front of the waterfall is even more impressive than the drop. Approximately 2.5km from Sainoike entrance to the waterfall, approximately 70 minutes. There is no overland route, only the route up the Nigori River. From the entrance, go down the mountain trail and land at Nigorikawa. After that, head upstream and you will be in front of the waterfall. It has a unique atmosphere with a brown riverbed and a smell of sulfur. I felt that there were no particular difficulties. You can wind all the waterfalls in front of the waterfall. There are some elements of mountain climbing, so consider it to be more difficult than regular mountain climbing. There are three routes to the 20m waterfall just before Fukai no Taki. You can either climb up the wall on the right bank, climb up the slope on the right bank a little before you, or climb up the scree along the high rock wall from quite a bit before you. I think climbing up scree is the safest way. When climbing the wall on the right bank, I couldn't find a fulcrum at the bottom middle, so I had to free solo. Although there were plenty of holds, it was quite stressful, so unless you're sure you can climb it, it's best to stop. Clothes include basic equipment for light mountain climbing and mountain climbing. Trekking shoes or rubber shoes are recommended. I get wet up to my shins. There is a toilet in the Sainohei parking lot. There is also a parking lot at the observatory. As the name "Kaerazu" suggests, this waterfall is so beautiful that you won't want to go back from the waterfall. We recommend that you visit it together with Okama, which is located upstream.

(Translated by Google) (Visited on June 7, 2025) The view is usually from the Komakusadaira Observatory. Access to the waterfall basin is for enthusiasts. We recommend the Montbell Sour Climber (or the older model Sour Trekker RS) for its amphibious footwear, as there is a mountain climb at the beginning, a stream crossing in the middle, and a steep scree climb at the end. From the trailhead near the toilets at the Sai no Kama Parking Lot, go almost straight for 15 minutes on the paved road, and you will reach a place with a good view called Hiyodorigoe. (You will pass the mountain path next to the Zao Old Road sign that appears in the first 5 minutes or so). From Hiyodorigoe, it takes 25 minutes of twists and turns to lower the altitude and reach the Nigori River, where you can go upstream (there is a stone monument of Yudono-san Shrine just before reaching the Nigori River, which is the last clear landmark). Due to the heavy snowfall in winter, the stream water is quite cold due to the strong flow of melting snow. There are several small streams, but about 20 minutes after entering the river, the first of the straight waterfalls appears. If this was another place, this alone would be enough to be named and become a scenic spot. Climb straight up while grabbing the trees and roots in the bushes on the right side (left bank). There are places where trees and roots can easily come loose, so be careful when descending on the way back. After passing this avantage waterfall, go upstream along the Nigori River for another 20 minutes and you will see a huge scree field. With this scree field in front of you, go to the right along the Nigori River for about 10 minutes and the second avantage waterfall will appear. It is good enough to be included in the 100 best waterfalls. Fukiya Falls is upstream of this waterfall. It is said that the route that goes straight up the bushes on the left side with the second avantage waterfall in front is relatively safe, but since I was not sure about the route, I returned to the scree field and climbed straight up. When you turn the aerial photographs of Google Maps into a 3D image, it captures the terrain quite accurately, so it is useful for understanding the terrain. It's about 20 to 30 meters long, but there are loose rocks here and there that will roll towards you if you grab them carelessly. The most challenging part is the last 1/3 of the climb, which is a straight climb and not only is it steep, but it also changes from scree to gravel, so it's a test of grip strength and leg strength. On the way back, if you stand on your backside with your buttocks on the ground in four-point support (or maybe five-point support since it's cracked), it's surprisingly easy to descend. Once you reach the top of the gravel, you can see the entire Fukiya Falls. If you descend the scree that leads to the basin, you will be directly below the waterfall. The waterfall's entrance cannot be seen from around the basin, but you can experience a constant flood of spray. (Original) (2025.6.7.

It must have been well-maintained and in good condition before, but now, although it's not in ruins, it doesn't seem to have any life in it. Even if you take the fact that it was winter when there were few plants, it would take a lot of work to make it look lively. Walking through the park, the structure is reminiscent of the European countryside, giving off a unique atmosphere, but it feels like a waste. The unique decor adds to the experience, making it a must-visit spot for both locals and travelers. With a menu featuring pictures for easy ordering and pet-friendly outdoor seating, this warm and cozy retreat is perfect for enjoying succulent meat and stunning views, especially during winter.
Delicious burgers! The staff are friendly and our food was prepared quickly. The place is quirky but we love it! Just make sure of the meat in the burger before ordering as a lot of the patties are made of pork. Definitely worth a stop if you’re in Zao.

Access: 4/5 They have a good amount of parking and good amount of seating, and it wasn't hard to find. Food: 3/5 I found their fries bland, and the burger used cheese sauce instead of real cheese, which I don't really forgive for any place calling themselves a burger joint. They have a great variety of dishes, though. Pricing: 3/5 Expensive, but about in line with what I'd expect. They only accept cash. Customer Experience: 3/5 The interior is roomy, and they have outdoor terrace seating. The staff were a little standoffish.

I truthfully wasn't expecting a burger place in an onsen area, much less expecting one to be good but I was happily proven wrong. This place is so cute and delicious! We went here for lunch and had an elaborate tofu set (the agedashi tofu and tofu salad were amazing!) as well as the umen noodles with tempura. It was our first time trying umen (it's like a soba noodle but lighter in flavour) and it was so tasty! The tempura was light and crunchy, just as we like it. They also make products (juice, jam, ice cream) using local Haruka apples, which have a lovely flavour. The servers were extremely kind and helpful and the English menu made ordering simple.

(Translated by Google) On a certain day in June, Sendai was experiencing hot summer days, so we decided to go somewhere to cool off, and stopped off for lunch on the way to Zao's Okama. When I asked at the tourist information center, I was introduced to Sankyuan, as many shops in this area are closed on Wednesdays😅 The parking lot is quite spacious, and the store is quite large. When I entered the store, I saw a strange sight😳 Folk art, or dolls of all genres, were waiting for me😂 Just like the exterior, the store is quite spacious. I wonder how many people it can accommodate🤔 I wanted to eat cold soba, so I ordered the gorgeous-looking "hiyashi hana soba"🥰 I waited for my food to be served while looking at the nostalgic Dakko-chan doll. In addition to tourists, people who looked like workers and local company employees came into the store one after another. I wonder if everyone has decided to eat here on Wednesdays? It took quite a while for the food to be served, probably because there were a lot of customers at lunchtime 😓 The chilled Hana Soba was served on a wooden plate with char siu, rolled egg, cucumber, fried tempura bits, grated daikon radish, and tomato, giving it the appearance of chilled Chinese noodles 🤭 The soba was firm and the cuts were consistent, so I wonder if it was cut by machine? It was full of ingredients, chewy and smooth, and I ate it in no time 😋 Finally, we were served soba soup, which was poured into the soup that had exuded the flavor of the char siu and fried tempura bits 😁 It turned into a delicious soup! It was an interesting soba restaurant, including the impact of the interior 🥰 P.S. The temperature in Togatta was 34 degrees, while it was 22 degrees in Zao's Okama 😱It was chilly by the time we left 😅 (Original)

It is the best soba noodle restaurant in the vicinity with only few seats. We had the lunch there after joining a day tour to Zao, and ordered soba noodle with sliced duck and vegetable tempura. The duck and soup were tasted with rich duck favour, while the noodles were in excellent texture. Tempura was also fresh and well fired. Zao is not a busy place with many restaurant, but this one is no doubt one of the best you should try.

Mahoroba

$$$$affordable
Yakiniku restaurant
Meat dish restaurant
During a stay at an inn, a visit to the yakiniku restaurant Mahoroba for dinner proved to be a bit pricey. Opting for the basic set, expectations were not high due to mixed reviews. However, the small portions of grilled meat surpassed expectations with their exceptional quality. Compared to another beef tongue dish tried previously, Mahoroba's loin and ribs were even more delicious. The customer service staff was efficient and friendly throughout the experience.
(Translated by Google) I went here on a solo trip. I used the Yakiniku plan at Hoshiko no Yado Mahoroba. The staff's attention to detail from the time I entered the restaurant until the food was served was amazing. Actually, if you select the 5:00 or 5:30 meal times when checking in, they offer a free drink. However, I'm not sure if this is always the case. If you select the Yakiniku plan when making a reservation, you also get a free drink, for a total of two free drinks. This yakiniku restaurant has an izakaya-style atmosphere. The young staff and lively atmosphere are great. I've tried yakiniku at restaurants ranging from cheap to expensive, but this place really stands out in terms of quality. The portions are generous. Above all, the charcoal grilling is great. The portion of vegetables I had at the beginning was huge, and while it may be more than enough for one person, it's quite generous. I initially ordered a large serving of rice, but the first person who ordered a large ordered it, so I quickly changed it to a medium. The meat may look small, but it was thick and well-cooked, tender, and delicious. You can also order additional portions. I decided to drink, so I ordered a medium-sized meal, but if you're not drinking, a large would be better. The ice-cold glass of Premier Malt's was fantastic. For my second drink, I was in the mood for Midori, so I ordered a Midori Gin and Soda Mega, which was great because I got two free drinks. I actually had planned to order an additional drink separately, but they added a complimentary drink to the bill. Since you can choose from drinks under 1,000 yen when you make your reservation, I went for the mega size, which has a larger portion. I wasn't expecting much from the yakiniku restaurant, so I didn't do much research. I just went there on the day, excited about it, and it exceeded my expectations. I only looked up the accommodation, not the yakiniku. If you're with more than two people, it may take a while to grill. The charcoal grill plate is curved, so it might fall off if you place it on the edge. And it's not for children, it's for adults. It's great to be able to enjoy the unique atmosphere of a yakiniku restaurant. This is also part of the fun of traveling, and there are some things you can enjoy by going alone. (Translated by Google) Flights departing and arriving at Fukushima Airport exceeded 80%. Tigerair Taiwan direct flight 🐅 I was surprised at how crowded it was. A direct flight with four nights included starting at ¥45,000 is cheap, and although it cost ¥10,000 for a three-hour round-trip highway toll plus gas, I was intrigued and gave it a try. Perhaps it's the tropical island culture of Taiwanese people, few people get up when the boarding announcement is made, and both takeoffs and landings are delayed by 30 minutes. Departure was smooth despite the line, but upon returning, immigration was handled by several staff members on the Taiwanese side, while only one person handled the Japanese side. There were less than 10 Japanese people in line, but it was slow and we couldn't get in. They said it was intensive immigration month, but customs was quite a hassle. The opening and closing times are convenient, so I think it's a good idea to split the highway and gas costs and go with multiple friends without worrying about time. Plus, the round-trip ticket was only 33,000 yen, so it could easily be used for traveling around Asia with a Taiwan transit. The airport staff and Fukushima residents are kind and helpful. As an Ultraman fan, I was really happy to see Ultra Airport. (I wish they'd bring in a designer and put more effort into it!♡) Apparently, the name comes from the fact that director Eiji Tsuburaya was from Sukagawa City, and the city established a sister city relationship with the Land of Light in the M78 Nebula. Shonai Airport

Airport
Regional airport
Shonai Airport is the closest airport to Tsuruoka, offering direct shuttle buses that take only 30 minutes and cost 760 yen each way. It's also accessible by train, with the JR Uetsu Line running along the scenic Sea of Japan.
This is a small airport which handles mostly domestic flights. There are few flights to Haneda and Shonai everyday. During winter flights may get cancelled or delayed due to the bad weather especially heavy snowfall. It's really clean like many airports in Japan and I had no issues whatsoever. There is a souvenir shop on the first floor as well. I heard that there used to be few international flights as well but I'm not sure about that now.

If you are landing in Shonai Airport, you will see a breathtaking view. This airport is relatively small but it's clean and cozy. After the bagage claims section, you will directly go outside. There is a bus waiting after your landing. No need to worry.

Very small airport with only about 3 flights to the Tokyo area 3x times a day (maybe).

A local airport to support the instant travelers and it's quite enough for departing.
LIONS S — Google review
Very small with limited facilities, I hardly found cart for my bags. Yet it is suitable for serving the small area around the airport.

(Translated by Google) It's great to be able to watch planes take off and land from the free observation deck. There was an event on that day, and they were serving up some delicious Hokkaido food. There was also an ANA in-flight meal vending machine in the airport, so it was fun just to look around. I'll upload some pictures in chronological order. (Translated by Google) Shonai Airport is a compact, easy-to-use regional airport located on the Sea of Japan side of Yamagata Prefecture. The interior is clean, bright, and has a calming atmosphere, making it easy for first-time visitors to find their way around. It's also conveniently located to Haneda Airport, making it extremely convenient for business trips and trips from the Shonai region to Tokyo. The souvenir corner is stocked with Shonai's famous sake and sweets made with Dadacha beans, making it a fun place to spend your time before boarding. Another great feature is the cafe and restaurant, where you can enjoy light meals made with local ingredients. The staff were courteous and friendly, and the warm service, despite being a regional airport, was impressive. Ample parking is also available, which is a plus. (Translated by Google) The "Mame Usa" characters are super cute! 💕 There are also dolls, stamps, and merchandise vending machines, making it a popular spot with children and young women. 🤭 There are only two flights per day. You can board the plane upon arrival at Shonai Airport. The deck is free to enter, and you can see it from the third and fourth floors. Parking is free at the airport. The second floor also features a souvenir shop and a restaurant serving Sangen pork.

The Soba noodle shop closes at 2pm even though there are flights mid day. Why? If you need noodles better get them before 2pm.

Small but Practical Airport, I arrived from Hokkaido and conveniently stayed one block away from Sakurambo-higashine Station. The down side to this airport is the lack of connection to the nearest train station which is Jimmachi Station, so taxi is required to leave the airport (unless you reserve bus shuttle), taxi ride is short thou, so no mayor cost impact to your wallet :) Airport services were decent.

It’s a small local airport with shuttle bus to the city and surrounding. Reservation might be required for shuttle bus services.
