Kumano Hongu Taisha is a serene Shinto shrine located in a tranquil mountain setting, accessible via a scenic trail and stone steps. The shrine hosts various festivals throughout the year, such as the Suna Festival Contest at Shirahama Beach in spring and the Kumano Hongu Taisha-Reitaisai Festival featuring rituals, dancing, and rice cake throwing.
This is a magnificent template and it’s on many people’s bucket list. The surrounding area is very scenic and walkable. You can easily spend a whole day there

Buddhist or not, you cannot help but be impressed by the size and magnitude of the OTorii gate and the Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine and complex. It is one of the 3 main shrines on the Kumano Kodo network. It is a Shinto Shrine with 4 main Buddha's to worship. In these shrines, common folk are to look through fences. I don't personally connect with that. I like to look at the statues I'm praying to and connect with the eyes, etc. But this is the Shinto way. The complex is bustling with pilgrims, both Japanese and foreign, mixed together. Some are there because one of the most frequently walked Kumano Kodo Trails ends a stage here, and some are visiting Japan. It's well worth a visit and you could spend an hour on the grounds. It's blossom season, so I'm lucky!
Redfern R — Google review
As the main shrine in the Kumano Sanzan, the outlook of the shrine is more ordinary. You would need to walk up a long stairs before reaching the main shrine, which is quite spectacular when viewing from top. The place is quite spiritual with not much tourist and people but nature sounds and beauty. For me, it was quite refreshing to visit this place.
Eric C — Google review
The fifth stop on the Kumano Kodo Hosshinmon-oji hike is Kumano Hongu Taisha, the main shrine of the trail. It's a beautiful and peaceful place to get your stamp and take a break after the walk.
Ced A — Google review
Our pilgrimage along the Kumano Kodo trails began at Kumano Hongu Taisha, and it felt like both a natural and symbolic choice. In the tradition of the three Kumano shrines, Hongu represents the «present» — the moment that is lived here and now. For me, as a practicing Buddhist, this was a profound spiritual experience: the journey begins with the very moment where life, breath, and meaning exist. The shrine stands deep within the mountains of the Kii region, surrounded by dense forests and rivers that have been considered sacred for centuries. The landscape is both harsh and generous: the rushing waters of the Kumano River, the mist shrouding the peaks, and the thick greenery all give it a sense of being apart from the everyday world. It is no wonder that since ancient times people have come here seeking purification and renewal. The mythology of Kumano is closely tied to deities of death and rebirth. Susanoo-no-Mikoto, the storm god, is worshipped here, as is Izanami, the primordial mother associated with the realm of the dead. Yet through these figures also runs the idea of renewal — entry into the «Pure Land», where past and future converge. It is no coincidence that emperors of the Heian period came here to pray for rebirth and the salvation of the soul. The history of the shrine has not been without hardship. In 1889, a flood destroyed the original sanctuary that stood on the banks of the Kumano River. Since then, the main shrine has been rebuilt on higher, safer ground, where it remains today. On the site of the former shrine now stand the great Otorii — the largest shrine gates in Japan. There is a rule that the inner sacred area should not be photographed, and it is important to respect that. We traveled between the main shrines mostly by bus, walking only parts of the route, and this became a reflection for me on what truly defines a pilgrimage. Yes, in the past people walked these mountains for weeks, but what matters is not the means of travel, but what you carry within. This journey is made with the heart. Each visit to a shrine, each prayer, and each pause became part of an inner journey, regardless of how I physically arrived there. The Kumano Kodo is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, and to walk (or ride) along it is to join a thousand-year-old tradition. Beginning at Hongu means beginning with the present — with the living moment that opens the path to awareness. Pilgrims then usually continue to Hayatama Taisha (the past) and finish at Nachi Taisha (the future). This order carries a deep inner logic: to live the present, to recognize the past, and to face the future.

A beautiful smallish temple. Free to enter. There are a number of steps you have to climb to get to the top.

Finally reached after 2 days hiking and was totally worth it. Majestic, welcoming, inclusive, serene, beautiful, so many details to enjoy. Surprising not more busy.

End of Kumado Kodo pilgrimage trail 😃. Serene place where you can just close your eyes and medita... until the tourist next you starts eating chips 😃. You can buy some "merch" tho the hemp bracelet is overpriced and low quality but I mean it is what it is. The final stamp is awaiting you pilgrim. If you are dual pilgrim (did Camino) show up at the shrine office. The head priest will initiate drumming celebration of your achievement :).

Kumano-Kodo Nakahechi Pilgrimage Route

Mentioned on

Hiking area
Embark on a transformative journey along the Kumano-Kodo Nakahechi Pilgrimage Route in Wakayama, Japan. This ancient network of trails leads to the revered Three Grand Shrines of Kumano, offering not only a physical trek but also a spiritual odyssey through picturesque forests and rural villages. Visitors can park at Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine, take a bus to Hosshinmon Oji, and then walk back to the shrine along the beginner's course.
Once in a lifetime pilgrimage experience that I would suggest people to partake. It is a true test of faith when you’re hiking the trail. While the trail is not technical, the experience will bring its share of challenges for you that help you grow spiritually. Thank you Kumano Kodo for a once in a lifetime moment that I am keeping safe in my treasure box.
Dr. D — Google review
I did part of the Kumano Kodo (Nakahechi route) on my first trip to Japan and loved it. I hiked sections like Takijiri-oji to Chikatsuyu and Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha, then used buses in between which made it doable in 3 days. Nachi Falls with the pagoda view is a must-see. Tip: You don't need to walk the full route. Plan with bus timetables and carry cash.
Ced A — Google review
Kumano-Kodo Pilgrimage is an amazing experience walking from village to village in the Wakayama prefecture of Japan. Small villages with limited accommodation also means small numbers of walkers. Some great day hikes as you walk between villages - not technically difficult, but steep and a mix of dirt/gravel and stone paths and steps. Easy access from Tokyo and Osaka by train to Kii-Tanabe (or Kii-Katsuura depending on walks you are doing). Highly recommend this walk and in particular staying at @kiri-no-sato Takahara and Chikatsuyu Sakura-no-Sato.
SSJNS — Google review
I spent three days hiking on the Kumano Kodo trail and really enjoyed the overall experience. I was there in July 2019 and I admit it rained heavily nearly the entire time. I still found a lot of joy exploring the forests and being alone with my thoughts. I stayed at Ryokans and did one homestay. I met interesting people along the way. The quiet and solitude provided a unique perspective of Japan.
Mathew Y — Google review
Amazing experience. 4 days walking. the trail and shrines and stories along the way were magical.

We did the Nakahechi part of the Kumano-Kodo route in May - it was warm but not that hot. Awesome but physically demanding experience. It took us 3 days to finish Nakahechi Pilgrimage: the first part of the route was more challenging than the rest. Every night we stayed at local guesthouses. If you want to get closer to Nature, recharge your energy level, and have a break from noisy World - this is the must do experience!
Galiia D — Google review
Absolutely amazing! We've done many, many multi-day treks across a couple of countries, and this is well up there as the best. It is so culturally different with diverse scenery, places and experiences. We did the walk over 4 days with Home Comforts Hiking out of Australia, and Marcus was excellent as a guide and in the itinerary he put together. While doable, I wouldn't have liked to have tried to do this on our own - we would have missed so much with the local side tracks and accommodation/food experiences Marcus had arranged. Bags were transported ahead each day, with lunch provided, making the often times difficult grade walk much easier. A lot of steps/stairs, and a couple of long days, but with an Onsen, a comfortable room (with supplied Kimono) and delectable meal at the end of each day, it was easy to get up and do another! A highly recommended experience for anyone keen on walking and being imersed in local history and culture.
Howard K — Google review
This may be controversial, but for those who are not spiritually inclined, this review is fair. Whilst it is nice to walk in the forest, it's important to note that none of the route is virgin or old growth forest. As a result, it does get fairly monotonous due to the monoculture nature of the tree plantations that make up the majority of the route. This lack of biodiversity meant we saw no fauna during our two day trip from Takijiri Ōji to Kumano Hongu Taisha - save a few birds. On the positive side, the trail is in good nick, and the journey provided a general lesson about the impacts of first urbanism, and then general population decline, on rural Japanese society.

The mountains lean close, and the air smells of cedar and sea. Kii-Tanabe is both a harbor and a trailhead — the doorway to Kumano’s sacred heart. Pilgrims arrive here quietly, their steps deliberate. Tourist Tip: Gateway to Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails. Visit Tokei Shrine and local bathhouses. Tourist center offers maps and trail info. Stay overnight before hiking to Hongu Taisha.

(Translated by Google) I live in Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, and I was looking for something I could do at home to train myself during the coronavirus quarantine period, and I came across an online martial arts class website. There was also judo, kendo, karate, and iaido, but I was somehow drawn to Aikido, and it seemed like I could practice it by myself at home, so I decided to join. Later, through some luck, I was invited by an acquaintance who practiced martial arts to join one of the Aikido clubs in the city. I'm at a good age, so it's difficult to be serious about it, but I continue to do it as a way to manage my health and learn new things. This time, I happened to take advantage of my day off from work and decided to drive between Kumano and Nanki, but I remembered that there was a memorial museum to the founder, Mr. Ueshiba, here in Tanabe, so I went to see it. Then, the teacher who was teaching the beginners came to the office and was very impressed. Although it was rude, I also asked a few questions about the philosophy of Aikido. This time, I also got to see the exhibition room inside. I have only ever practiced martial arts other than kendo and judo in junior high school physical education, but I was also introduced to the ideas of the founder, Mr. Ueshiba, and there is a deep philosophy behind Japanese martial arts. That's what I thought. I think I'm learning the techniques little by little, but I also think it would be great if I could apply the ideas of Aikido to my daily life. (Translated by Google) I made a mistake in creating the chronology. Items that should be arranged from the left are arranged from the right. The people at the company that made it were probably too lazy to redo it. The basic technique experience zone is also suitable. You cannot perform the trick while looking at the light of the footprints. Also, the confirmation footage shows the left half of the body superimposed on the right half of the body, which shows that the production company is doing a fake job. Tanabe City, who requested it, should contact the production company and have them remake it. I guess no one checked the finished product. The Kumano Hongu Heritage Center is a great place to stop and stretch your legs. They have displays on the history and importance of the area and you can learn more about the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trail. The Kumano Kodo is a pilgrimage trail similar to the Camino de Santiago in Europe. They have a dual pilgrim program for people who complete a certain percentage of each trail. If you are walking the Kumano Kodo, there are boxes with stamps along the trail. As you encounter these boxes, you stamp your Pilgrim's passport booklet (available at the start of the trail) to mark your progress. The center's staff will verify your completion of the pilgrimage. Dual pilgrims received a special certificate for completing both trails.
Mathew Y — Google review
If you finish your pilgrim hiking with a stamp book, they put a completion stamp on the stamp book. If you already finished Santiago, you can get a dual certification.

We did the same. 😉 Awesome!

Akihei is a charming restaurant located just 8 minutes away from the Tanabe station. Visitors have raved about the exceptional dining experience, praising the tender cuts of raw fish and beef, as well as the delightful flavors. The beef hot pot and miso dishes were also highly recommended. Guests were particularly impressed by the homemade matcha ice cream. The friendly hosts and chefs provided valuable tips on local attractions, making English-speaking visitors feel especially welcome.
Low-key spot with a delicious assortment of Japanese dishes. • The meal sets provide great variety at a reasonable price. • Wagyu Sukiyaki is one of the premium offerings, but well worth the cost. The tender meat is served in a rich and flavorful broth. • Kirin beer on tap, served in a chilled glass - very refreshing. • complementary tea A great choice for our first taste of Tanabe. Izakaya restaurant
Nestled in the quiet city of Tanabe, Kanteki izakaya stands out as a vibrant gem for travelers exploring the Kumano Kodo. While Tanabe may seem tranquil with its sparse downtown, stepping into Kanteki transforms your evening into a lively experience filled with warmth and hospitality. The family-run establishment welcomes guests like old friends, creating an atmosphere that feels both inviting and familiar.
Delicious food and really lovely staff! Make sure you try the grilled eel and the onion gratin.

Super friendly staff, and cozy little izakaya. Sat at the bar and enjoyed heaps of tempura treats while the chefs used their limited English to talk to us, sake samples were shouted and food was awesome, the chefs even served us up a complimentary sample of milt which my partner couldnt handle but I enjoyed a new experience

Following the advice of another reviewer, my family came to this izakaya. Very glad we did. They served a bomb otoshi with six small servings. We tried their umeshu (the liquor made from pickled plums), my wife ordered a second while I'm working on my second nihonshu. Shrimp cakes were amazing as was the sashimi platter. But better than the food is feeling like you entered as a regular at Cheers. The staff was so welcoming. The couples at the bar made us feel welcome (the child of one of the couples is still playing with our daughter). If you like good eats and drinks in a low key and cheerful atmosphere, Kanteki is for you.

Shinbe

Izakaya restaurant
If you're on the hunt for an authentic Japanese dining experience, look no further than Shinbe. This charming traditional restaurant is a seafood lover's paradise, where the atmosphere buzzes with energy and warmth. Upon entering, you'll be greeted by friendly hosts who make you feel right at home, even if you're dining solo in a foreign land—a true testament to the joys of travel! On my visit, I indulged in their famous bonito served with rice—absolutely delicious!
Delicious, fresh food and a really warm atmosphere. Friendly staff were very chatty in Japanese and many regulars left happy while I was there. English menu available.

The town and streets were silent on a Monday night till coming through the door to the hustle and bustle of this amazing place. Loud and vibrant, efficient, crammed, amazing service and superb food. No wonder the shrimp paste balls are famous. Moshi katsuo! The salad with bonus ham. Horse mackerel with pickled plum sushi. Divine. Fisherman fan action. And an English menu! Must be the most exciting place in town.
Stuart W — Google review
It's a cute little place, hidden. The people are super nice. I went by myself so didn't get to try a lot. There's an English menu. Lots of variety. There was the option to order just one (ebi Dango), instead of the listed amount (3). They also just charged it accordingly by unit. They offered me peanuts and ice cream for free. The owner was super nice and tried to talk to me despite the language barrier. It's a good hangout place for a drink and food after a long walk. Sure there are more top notch places out there, but this is good overall. Sashimi was not top quality but good variety and value.

Delicious menu-we had the local benito and the shrimp balls and they were AMAZING. This place was incredible. Myself and my partner (both from Australia) came here by chance. It was one out of . . . . . . . . 30 we could have picked but extremely grateful our gut lead us to this one in particular. The food was honestly what you would get at a 5 star restaurant in Perth. We paid $50AUD for something we are used to paying $200AUD for. Not to mention the entire staff could not help us enough. My partner is vegetarian so eating out in rural Japan is quite difficult sometimes but these guys had heaps of vegetarian options. Cannot recommend enough. Thank you very much guys 🙏🏻

きっちん

Restaurant
If you find yourself near Kumano Hongu Taisha after a long day of hiking, "きっちん" is the perfect spot to refuel. This charming teishoku restaurant offers a delightful selection of Japanese set meals, with their Karaage Teishoku being a standout choice.
This restaurant is conveniently located just a short walk from Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine. My top recommendation is Deep Fried Chicken Set, the "Karaage-Teishoku" in Japanese which is Japanese-style fried chicken. The fried chicken is incredibly filling, with each piece being about 3-5 times larger than regular Japanese fried chicken, yet it is priced the same as other set meals. However, if you have a small appetite, you may want to take note. Not only is the fried chicken large, but it is also very tasty, with a crispy coating, juicy chicken with a slightly fatty texture, and a soy sauce-based seasoning that goes incredibly well with white rice. The set meal also includes miso soup and a side dish that varies depending on the season. The staff is very friendly, and while the speed of service may depend on how busy the restaurant is, it was quite fast during my visit.

This is a lovely restaurant. The bar counter is decorated with many cute lucky cats, and I noticed many tourists enjoying their meals too. We ordered a tonkatsu and a beef bowl. While the flavors might not surprise you, the taste is definitely worth the price.

Kitchen is a great spot to grab a hearty meal after hiking from Hosshimon Oji to Hongu Taisha. I especially recommend their Karaage Teishoku set (fried chicken lunch) — the portions are gargantuan, the chicken is crispy and flavorful, and the whole meal filling. The staff is always warm and welcoming, and they’ve been consistently kind whenever I stop by for lunch. It’s also incredibly convenient — just a short walk (less than five minutes) from the World Heritage Center and Hongu Taisha.

Thursday 2.30pm Just walked out of Kumano trail and was very hungry. Have been planning to have soba but most other places are closed. So disappointed but at least this place stayed open!! Order and service was prompt. Food was served without much wait, serving temperature was perfect. Taste was pretty standard with Japanese food. Nothing out of the ordinary. Most importantly the place was clean and orderly. Only one toilet available and it is the old fashioned squatting type. Convenient place to pop by after your trek.
TM O — Google review
Nice teishoku (japanese set meal) restaurant just next to Kumano Hongu Taisha 🍱 We got the karaage chicken set meal - highly recommended! You get 3 big pieces of delicious fried chicken that are incredible juicy with rice and other side dishes such as pickles, miso soup and salad. It’s great quality and really filling for such a good value, only 1200 JPY. After finishing our kumano kodo trail, it was one of the few options that were open (until 15:30). Around 14:00 we did not have to wait for a table. English menu is available with pictures so it is very helpful if you are not familiar with the japanese set meals.

Restaurant
Mori no Sato Miruriina is a delightful cafe/restaurant with a charming interior and a scenic river view. Their menu offers a diverse range of options, including breakfast, burgers, pizza, pasta, and traditional Japanese cuisine. Notably, their dishes featuring Kumano-gyu (kumano beef) are particularly delectable. The Kumano beef burger is highly recommended for its amazing taste. Additionally, some meals come with enticing side dishes that are perfect for satisfying your hunger.
We came across this cafe in our drive across the Hongu area. It's delightfully located facing the Kumano River. I ordered a Yakiniku beef burger while my friends ordered kyoto duck udon. Delicious! But I think their dishes containing Kumano-gyu (kumano beef) are especially delicious. My husband tried the Kumano beef burger and said it was amazing. He highly recommends it! Some of the meals come with side dishes too, perfect for if you're very hungry. There is also chocolate caramel popcorn they sell for you to take home, which I highly recommend because it's very tasty! This place is also English friendly! It was very delicious. She said the shiitake mushrooms were delicious, so I tried the croquette. Watasu's croquette was so fluffy and delicious that when he gave it to his partner, he was really excited. Watasu is an alien who loves croquettes, so I wanted to hear his partner's evaluation. When I saw the bowl on the table next to me, I was surprised to see how big it was. I think it's probably shiitake mushroom bowl. (Translated by Google) We stopped by for lunch on the way back from Ryujin Onsen. The restaurant is divided into a restaurant and a shop, but the cash register is in the same place. The restaurant has table seats and counter seats where you can see the river. Apparently shiitake mushrooms are a specialty here, so while I was attracted by the shiitake burger, I ordered a shiitake bowl (the soba set was sold out) and shiitake soba at the restaurant. I was surprised at how big the shiitake mushrooms were. The shiitake in the shiitake bowl were big and thick, but soft and delicious! It was a sauce cutlet bowl type with cabbage on top of rice, a little bit of bacon, and a shiitake cutlet on top! It was covered in sauce. The soba noodles were topped with grated yam and sweetly simmered shiitake mushrooms. This was also delicious. They also had shiitake curry, which looked delicious. The shop sold souvenirs and local products (for some reason there was a Moomin corner), but the shiitake mushrooms were sold out. I asked the shop assistant if they sold them anywhere else and he told me a few places, so I went there (the closest was the Dragon Museum) to buy some. A pack of five cost 350 yen. Not too expensive. This roadside station, Ryuyu, has a long parking lot that stretches horizontally. There are two other buildings in addition to the main building (?). It feels a bit cramped, but I think it can fit about 15 cars. There were also tables under a roof where you could take a rest. There are other food stalls as well, so it's a good place to take a break. The portion of beef was generous, and you could choose from three main dishes: Koshigaya rice, Takikomi rice, and Ten-grain rice. You could also have as much rice and miso soup as you wanted. It was delicious, and it was the cheapest beef cutlet set meal I'd ever had. Two days later, I drove 60km to come back and eat it again.

(Translated by Google) Visited on a weekday around 5pm. You can choose from Niigata Koshihikari rice, ten-grain rice, or the daily cooked rice, and your miso soup can be made with either Hitohame Wakame or Nameko mushrooms. You can have refills so you can try all the types. You can also have more cabbage, and the homemade dressing is delicious. For pickles, you can enjoy Kishu small plums, homemade yuzu radish, and green cucumber. Both the yuzu radish and small plums are very tasty. The cutlet is tasty, as is the tartar sauce. It was a very satisfying dinner, the first time in a while. If you want to know what to do, just ring the bell on the table. Payment can be made by card or electronic money.

Kansai International Airport, located on a man-made island in Osaka Harbor, serves the greater Osaka area and offers convenient rail access as well as an adjacent hotel. Travelers can easily explore nearby attractions such as Wakayama Castle, Marina City, and the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage routes during layovers of a few hours. Additionally, the airport is connected to various train stations within Osaka City and beyond, providing easy access to shopping, dining, and recreational options.
I think it is the most convenience airport to enter the main city in Japan due to just walk straight and you can enter the train easily. Not complicated like other airport. Have a lot of restaurant on the second floor but one thing to remind for shopper who want to shopping in duty free zone, there is not many shops as you thought.

Arrived at Terminal 2 for the first time in early July recently by budget Peach airline. The plane was parked out in the tarmac and had to walk with no shade to the terminal building. It was also quite a bit of walk to the immigration section. There were a few kiosks to register first and then join the long queue for the immigration counters. To get to the city by train, must first get on a free shuttle bus to Terminal 1 which is where the train station is The shuttle was efficient and it was just a short ride. Overall it was not so bad, just a process to go through like most airports.

A large but very well-designed airport with a large selection of quality shops and restaurants and snack bars with a good selection of refreshments at relatively reasonable prices. The airport is very easy to get to, both by taxi and via the airport express. The modern security control is also very comfortable, as you no longer have to take electronic devices and hygiene products out of your hand luggage. As a passenger, I was very satisfied every time I used the airport's services.

Check-in crew was professional and quick, security check was smooth and fast as well. It was my first time in KIX airport (departure) and I wasn’t aware there’s an additional shuttle ride required to get to my gate; thinking it’s just right around the corner while I casually shopped around for more souvenirs and a meal for in-flight. When I come to realize that a shuttle was required, I was worried I’d be late. I usually leave sufficient time if not more for boarding but that was a different story. Ofc, it was partially my fault too for not familiarizing with a foreign new airport. They have limited restaurants around the area I was going before the shuttle and a particular Japanese restaurant felt very hostile. The gift shop was very packed and was rather small with limited choices. The queue took forever which ended up wasting around 10-15mins for me and they weren’t very professional either. Had to walk quite a distance (two vending machines away) from my gate to a different vending machine to find some cola. Apparently Coca Cola isn’t that popular so it’s not available in all vending machines. Luckily I had plenty of time left to get a soda to cool off.

Nice airport. We landed without any waiting to get to a gate. Passing through the customs was fast. We filled out the entry form and declaration form on the flight so did not have to stop at any point. The airport is very organized. Pretty much every corner you will see staff directing people in Japanese English and other languages. Some tax free stores on the way out. Snacks, cigarettes, wine etc. Then we exited to the luggage claim. The luggage came out lined up with handles at outside so easily for us to grab. Again, very organized. The airport is clean and easy to navigate.

Quite a unique place. At this airport there is nothing that you will miss. All of the facilities and services are just right there. Well if you will be there during some rush hours then you should be not surprised that if you wanna buy some Japanese snacks you will need to wait for a while in a Que to n every store. But generally good experience for all. Thank you🤩

Very modern and clean with clear English signs. Many seats and toilet. However, the seats with plug are not enough. Many food stalls are provided but most of them are quite expensive. The souvenir ahop and duty free provide lots of stuff that something cheaper than in town shopping😆 but close very early. At 9.30pm, many shops were already closed including the lounge!!!! About the immigration is quite slow, take long time waiting. You can get in town with many ways for example airport limousine bus, train.
