Sat at the bar and enjoyed heaps of tempura treats while the chefs used their limited English to talk to us, sake samples were shouted and food was awesome, the chefs even served us up a complimentary sample of milt which my partner couldnt handle but I enjoyed a new experience

Following the advice of another reviewer, my family came to this izakaya. Very glad we did. They served a bomb otoshi with six small servings. We tried their umeshu (the liquor made from pickled plums), my wife ordered a second while I'm working on my second nihonshu. Shrimp cakes were amazing as was the sashimi platter. But better than the food is feeling like you entered as a regular at Cheers. The staff was so welcoming. The couples at the bar made us feel welcome (the child of one of the couples is still playing with our daughter). If you like good eats and drinks in a low key and cheerful atmosphere, Kanteki is for you.

We arrived in late afternoon in Tanabe and haven't taken out lunch. Tourist information centre staff recommended this restaurant to us. No doubt it is authentic Japanese style, the food is delicious and the owner is friendly. Speak fluent english and give good recommendations.

Amazing little gem in Tanabe. Hosts are very attentive and food was fantastic. All my favourites and too many to try in one sitting. For those on the Kumano, they can also provide a take away Bento. Food, beer, sake and service were all outstanding, very happy to recommend. Like many places in rural Japan you’ll need cash too. Thanks for providing such a tasty late lunch! It was a surprise that this was a very old restaurant since 1870’s. The host was very good and speaks English quite well. The food was also very food and with the wait and price.

The town and streets were silent on a Monday night till coming through the door to the hustle and bustle of this amazing place. Loud and vibrant, efficient, crammed, amazing service and superb food. No wonder the shrimp paste balls are famous. Moshi katsuo! The salad with bonus ham. Horse mackerel with pickled plum sushi. Divine. Fisherman fan action. And an English menu! Must be the most exciting place in town.

It's a cute little place, hidden. The people are super nice. I went by myself so didn't get to try a lot. There's an English menu. Lots of variety. There was the option to order just one (ebi Dango), instead of the listed amount (3). They also just charged it accordingly by unit. They offered me peanuts and ice cream for free. The owner was super nice and tried to talk to me despite the language barrier. It's a good hangout place for a drink and food after a long walk. Sure there are more top notch places out there, but this is good overall. Sashimi was not top quality but good variety and value.

Delicious menu-we had the local benito and the shrimp balls and they were AMAZING. The chef/staff were so friendly and welcoming and helped us work out what we were meant to be eating with what-even though we speak very little Japanese! One of the best meals we had in Japan. Would definitely eat there again.

We had an amazing meal at this restaurant which we happened upon during a rain shower. The staff could be more helpful. Amazing eggplant and tomato and waygu beef dishes, as well as soba noodles. Highly recommend!

This place was incredible. Myself and my partner (both from Australia) came here by chance. It was one out of . . . . . . . . 30 we could have picked but extremely grateful our gut lead us to this one in particular. The food was honestly what you would get at a 5 star restaurant in Perth. We paid $50AUD for something we are used to paying $200AUD for. Not to mention the entire staff could not help us enough. My partner is vegetarian so eating out in rural Japan is quite difficult sometimes but these guys had heaps of vegetarian options. Cannot recommend enough. Thank you very much guys 🙏🏻

This is my definitive my favorite MOS burger branch. It has a stunning view and you can sit outside. I'm pretty sure there is no second MOS with this great surrounding. I went there several times and it was never really crowded so I really enjoyed the atmosphere. They even have a second restroom for customers sitting on the terrace. Parking is also no problem. Highly recommend even if you are not a fan of (japanese) burgers.

This is a lovely restaurant. The bar counter is decorated with many cute lucky cats, and I noticed many tourists enjoying their meals too. We ordered a tonkatsu and a beef bowl. While the flavors might not surprise you, the taste is definitely worth the price.

Kitchen is a great spot to grab a hearty meal after hiking from Hosshimon Oji to Hongu Taisha. I especially recommend their Karaage Teishoku set (fried chicken lunch) — the portions are gargantuan, the chicken is crispy and flavorful, and the whole meal filling. The staff is always warm and welcoming, and they’ve been consistently kind whenever I stop by for lunch. It’s also incredibly convenient — just a short walk (less than five minutes) from the World Heritage Center and Hongu Taisha.

Thursday 2.30pm Just walked out of Kumano trail and was very hungry. Have been planning to have soba but most other places are closed. So disappointed but at least this place stayed open!! Order and service was prompt. Food was served without much wait, serving temperature was perfect. Taste was pretty standard with Japanese food. Nothing out of the ordinary. Most importantly the place was clean and orderly. Only one toilet available and it is the old fashioned squatting type. Convenient place to pop by after your trek.

Nice teishoku (japanese set meal) restaurant just next to Kumano Hongu Taisha 🍱 We got the karaage chicken set meal - highly recommended! You get 3 big pieces of delicious fried chicken that are incredible juicy with rice and other side dishes such as pickles, miso soup and salad. It’s great quality and really filling for such a good value, only 1200 JPY. After finishing our kumano kodo trail, it was one of the few options that were open (until 15:30). Around 14:00 we did not have to wait for a table. English menu is available with pictures so it is very helpful if you are not familiar with the japanese set meals.

This was a very lovely cafe/restaurant. The interior felt very charming and there's an area that overlooks the river. Their menu is great as well, they have a wide selection such as breakfast, burgers, pizza, pasta, and traditional Japanese meals. But I think their dishes containing Kumano-gyu (kumano beef) are especially delicious. My husband tried the Kumano beef burger and said it was amazing. He highly recommends it! Some of the meals come with side dishes too, perfect for if you're very hungry. There is also chocolate caramel popcorn they sell for you to take home, which I highly recommend because it's very tasty! This place is also English friendly! There are English menus and one of the owners can speak English well!

Wonderful views of the nearby Kumano river, great atmosphere, friendly staff, and incredible food. We tried their curry dishes, some udon noodles and the Kumamoto beef set - everything was delicious!

The food was amazing with good quantity and quality of food. Amazing ambience and vibe, it has separate kids area for playing. You can buy hand made souvenirs from here. I wanted to give 4 stars but due to the long waiting time and long service time i have given 3 but it was a busy Sunday too. A must visit atleast once. People who serve here are very sweet.

Absolutely worst experience ever in Japan. It rained very heavily in the city today. After we entered the restaurant, we waited an extremely long time to order, even though there weren’t many customers inside. Great beef sets, the beef was grilled perfectly and came in a tasty jus, besides that there was a great miso soup, seared bonito, good quality sashimi and some small sides.
