Old Salem Museums & Gardens

Old Salem Museums & Gardens is a historical gem for enthusiasts, offering a deep dive into the Moravian settlement of Winston-Salem in 1766. The meticulously preserved buildings and lush gardens provide a glimpse into colonial America, while costumed interpreters bring history to life. Visitors can tour numerous historic buildings and learn about Moravian life, sample food, and explore an impressive collection of Southern decorative art at The Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts.
Absolutely loved walking around here and learning from all the wonderful historical interpreters. My wife and I stayed at the nearby Brookstown Inn and in the evenings we walked down here after dinner just to enjoy the vibes. If you are buying a ticket to actually go inside the houses I would recommend the all access pass because there’s truly so much to see if you enjoy history, I believe you can definitely make a full day out of it.

Wandering through Old Salem felt like stepping into an 18th-century Moravian village. I was captivated by the aroma of fresh Moravian sugar cake from Winkler Bakery and loved chatting with artisans in authentic shops. The period-dressed interpreters and beautiful gardens made history come alive. A peaceful, charming, and unexpectedly immersive visit—one of my favorite NC experiences!
Amber M — Google review
There were very few people around on a Saturday afternoon in September. I’m told this is very different from mid-Ictober to December, as well as March-July. And 5 hours were not enough. The interpreters were very friendly and knowledgeable, and even though we could visit very few of them, we learnt a lot from each of them. We particularly enjoyed the passion each interpreter brought to their work, and the efforts they made to keep the materials and processes authentic. It was an easy day trip from the Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill area.

Another FIVE-STAR experience in Winston-Salem, strolling through Old Salem Museums & Gardens during the late afternoon hours. We checked into the Historic Brookstown Inn and walked three blocks up to the South Main Street entry point to Old Salem (the location of the historic Mickey Coffee Pot Maker). Easy! Old Salem is an immersive experience offering beautifully preserved and interpreted 18th-19th century history, I was surprised to see a marker on the property where the first Krispy Kreme doughnut store WAS located (see photo). Obviously not 18th-19th history, but still important NC history (love those doughnuts!). Old Salem is perfect for families, history buffs, or anyone who appreciates the heritage and period architecture. Be sure to check out Winkler Bakery, still in operation since 1800! Check out the shops, homes, schools, churches, and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts.

I enjoyed spending a day in Old Salem. The museums were interesting as was the architecture. Good way to spend half to a whole day.
Scott S — Google review
Visiting Old Salem this past weekend was like stepping into a living time capsule, and it was pure magic. As a proud Salem College alum, returning to the community brought back so many cherished memories, but experiencing it through the eyes of my son and the rest of our tour group (which included a bunch of adolescent boys!) made it even more special. The historical interpreters—every single one—were phenomenal, keeping both the kids and adults engaged with their storytelling and knowledge. I want to give an extra special shout-out to Brother DJ and Sister Stacy in the Salem Tavern, who absolutely stole the show. Their passion, warmth, and authenticity made us feel like we had truly traveled back in time. Thank you, Old Salem, for preserving this history and sharing it in such a meaningful and memorable way. We'll be talking about this visit for a long time to come!
Lauren Y — Google review
This building seems to be the visitor center for Old Salem its set up nicely with different historical displays and lots of information regarding Old Salem inside there's a gift shop and ticket Information desk as well as a auditorium great place to start your adventure on your walk through the historic moravian district of salem
Lewis K — Google review
Old Salem Museums & Gardens stands out for rigorous preservation and clear interpretation of Moravian town life. Winkler Bakery occupies a 1799 bakery that remains operational with a wood-fired oven and historic recipes, representing one of North Carolina’s longest-running bakery traditions and a rare working foodways site. The Single Brothers’ House interprets Salem’s organised communal economy. As residence and training ground for unmarried craftsmen, it anchors narratives about skilled trades, self-sufficiency, and town planning; today it functions as a core exhibit building within the historic district. Across these sites, Old Salem advances an inclusive mission that foregrounds the stories of Moravian, Black, and Indigenous peoples, strengthening its significance as a research-grounded, living-history museum rather than a static streetscape. I highly recommend people to stop by to experience and learn about the history of these lands.

Reynolda House Museum of American Art

Reynolda House Museum of American Art is a stunning estate with well-maintained gardens that showcase American art spanning from 1755 to the present day, including rotating exhibitions. The mansion itself has an intriguing history and knowledgeable staff were on hand to answer any questions. Visitors can freely explore the home while docents offer insights into its historical significance. It's a fantastic local attraction that offers a great way to spend a few hours with family or as a solo adventure.
I came here for the first time a couple weekends ago because they were doing free admission and it was a great way to spend my afternoon! I had been to Reynolda Village many times but never realized all the history behind this place. I spent about 2.5 hr walking through the place, reading most of the plaques and really enjoying a lot of the artwork throughout. The house is huge, 4 stories in all. I think my favorite spots were the sleeping porches and then the basement with a shooting range, bowling alley, wet bar, and pool! The main level had a ton of open spaces and lounge areas too. Learning more about the entire family, as well as the overall community was fascinating and gave me a deeper appreciation for RV. If you haven't taken a tour yet, I highly recommend it!
Dee B — Google review
A stunning FIVE-STAR self-guided tour of the Reynolda House Museum, built in 1917 as the family residence of Katharine Smith and R.J. Reynolds on a 1,067-acre estate. This comfortable and regal home is frozen in time, reflecting early 20th-century style, and is brimming with period furniture, artwork, accessories, and clothing/fashions—spanning 64 rooms and 34,000 square feet. Highlights include a pipe organ that fills the home with music, a swimming pool, a ping-pong room, a bowling alley, an indoor shooting range, a bank vault, a walk-in wine cellar, and more. The home sits adjacent to Reynolda Village, Reynolda Gardens, and Wake Forest University. We spent a full day exploring the property, but you can take two hours—or two days—to enjoy your visit at your own pace. Another must-see in Winston-Salem is Old Salem, just a short 4-mile drive from the Reynolda House Museum.

I’ll be honest, I’m not usually a huge historical home fan so take my review with a grain of salt. I did think the home was beautiful though! It was $18 (before tax) and I felt like it was worth it. There are four floors total, though the attic is small. The outside of the house was my favorite with the white exterior and green windows. If you can swing it, I’d recommend going in the afternoon so you can hear the organ play at 2:45 PM (it’s not exact because I guess it takes a while to turn on) and is digitized. It’s pretty cool though to hear the music while you’re walking through the house. I’ll review it separately, but definitely check out the gardens while you are there! They are free!
Lo H — Google review
I have lived with 15 minutes of this Museum for close to 20 years and this was my first visit. What vision Katharine Reynolds had in the early 1900s. The house and the gardens are gorgeous. Walked out a Patron member. Thank you for making today a great day
Gina C — Google review
I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to reynolda house museum in Reynolda village. The walk to the museum was so peaceful and full of nature. I walked past turtles in the river, snakes in the woods, and so many different flowers along the way. It was so special to walk around and see. When I got to the museum it had an exhibit of cigarettes. The whole exhibit was full of history about cigarettes and how they were branded in society. It was really cool to walk around and see so much history. I was happy to get an understanding about how cigarettes were branded and how they came to be so popular in Winston Salem. I’m very happy with this visit to a museum and I totally recommend a visit by anyone who is interested in history, art, or museums.
Ryan W — Google review
I loved the vintage clothing exhibit! The art displayed in the house is beautiful! The pool is open for public use with a museum membership fee.
Laura K — Google review
Great walking trails and scenery. I wish there were more garbage cans throughout the park. I had to cary some trash on an entire 2+ mile walk because I couldn't find a trash can anywhere.

I went when there weren’t any events and it was a pretty and interesting place to walk my dog. Plenty of panels explaining ever stone mound and site which made it pretty educational and a step up from many old colonial ruin sites. All in all it’s not worth a 4hr drive but if you’re in the area it’s a cool place for a walk.
Elijah A — Google review
I drove a few hours to get here and was disappointed because I came for the lotus pond. When I got there found out the trail was not accessible. However, we stayed and explored the grounds. It was very educational and interesting. I did find another was to access the pond which was a short drive away.

Went to the Apple Festival on a beautiful fall day. The crowds were large and well-behaved. Vendors had a wide variety for sale, and all the historic buildings were open for tours. Bethabara was a sister town to Salem where the Moravians settled in 1753 to escape religious persecution. Eleven settlers, each chosen for their distinct occupation, left Bethlehem PA and covered 520 miles in 40 days. The pottery house and the blacksmith were particularly interesting, as was the petting zoo for children. The large barn has displays of various tools used by the Moravians in everyday tasks. There are a few good hiking trails, one of which leads across Minorcas Creek to their God's Acre burying ground. A lot of history here. The only complaint I have is that no one was selling apple cider! Besides that, it was a great time.
Rick M — Google review
The historical structures are well marked. Had a lovely time exploring and walking around this Moravian settlement
Andrea — Google review
If you're a history buff, the story of the Moravians and their history in NC is very interesting. We went during the week so there were more staff than the very few other visitors. All were very friendly and informative. The black smithing volunteers have us a personal demonstration and made us a souvenir pot hanging hook from a steel bar ... very cool and interesting. They also had an assortment of metal tools, etc that would have been used in the settlement and explained what they did. I loved it! We only spent and hour and half or so, so we didn't take the guided tour, but I'm sure it would been very interesting. We did watch the we 20 minute video and read a lot of the plaques in the visitors center. Highly recommend if you enjoy history.
Bob C — Google review
My husband and I decided to stop by two weeks ago and it was just LOVELY. It is a small place but the history is rich. We walked around freely and admired the scenery. It was so peaceful and quiet. There was a very nice lady dressed in period clothing who offered us free stew and bread and it was such a fun experience. We really had a great time.
Lindsey B — Google review
Cool historic park representing the early Moravian settlement of the Winston area. One thing to note is that maps takes you to the park trails and not to the visitors center / historic site. The trails are very poorly marked with maps only as you enter the trails. If you are looking to see where the early settlement was you are better off going to the Moravian church and then down the road a bit to get to the historic site. The site and visitors center themselves are well worth it if you are into historic sites. A few old buildings still exist, lots of foundations and a few recreations. This site is well paired with a visit to the other historic Winston-Salem sites.

Brewery
Nestled in the heart of Downtown Winston-Salem, Foothills Brewing Tasting Room stands as a beacon for craft beer enthusiasts. Established in 2005, this brewery has made a name for itself as one of the largest in the southeastern United States, boasting an impressive lineup of award-winning brews like Jade IPA and Hoppyum IPA. The tasting room offers not just exceptional beers but also a delightful menu featuring tasty pub fare and coffee options.
A lovely evening at Foothills, we arrived during "movie night" on the weekend. A lot of people in lawn chairs in the parking lot watching a big screen that might possibly have been showing, and I'm not kidding here, cat videos. Over 100 people out there for that. We were inside where there was a live band playing loudly, some comfy seats in the back gave us some distance and enough quiet to be able to hold a conversation. I enjoyed a Foothills Torch Pilsner and it was awesome. Mrs. K., who doesn't drink alcohol, thoroughly enjoyed one of their Little Frees hemp-infused sparkling water. Enjoyed it so much that we bought a four-pack of that to bring home. With the drinks, a box of sushi from the Sushi Empire Food Truck. Delicious. Much fun had here and I will definitely return. Awesome!
Bruce K — Google review
The beer here is as close to fresh as it gets - brewed onsite! Outstanding selection of year around favorites & seasonal brews. Want some food? Great wings and things from the near permanent food truck, can be ordered from the bar on the same tab. TOAST TAB is the POS used. My favorite - FROSTBITE is a black IPA. Service is fast & friendly. Daily specials from Trivia, Music, Yoga, Run Club all meet different days. Consult website for exact schedule.
David D — Google review
I decided to attend one of the music bingo hosted by Foothills Brewing. It was my first time, so I was not aware of how the game played. It looks like groups of people gather for this event as a hangout day with friends. They had all kind of beers. If you got hungry, stationed next to the place was a food truck where you can place your order on the phone. Once your complete your order they will text you when your order is ready. It was a cool atmosphere with good music. I will definitely return.
Katherine L — Google review
I’ve been to the tasting room a few times now to grab a beer and check out the live music. The food truck sells some pretty good food. The brews are always amazing. Live music has always been enjoyable. I’d definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a laid back vibe.
Jason C — Google review
Great place. Many different beer choices from their brewery and others. They also have their own food truck on site. Food was awesome. We had the smoked wings, and the Reuben . Live music on Sunday afternoon was a nice treat. We also stayed in site with Harvest Host in our RV. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Joel M — Google review
My husband and I recently popped in on a beautiful Saturday. We loved the permanent food truck and we also purchased a bag of coffee (excellent merch selection too). Of course, tons of options on tap and in the case.
Angela H — Google review
Live music this evening. Food was ok, and the vibe was nice
Irie L — Google review
So glad this brewery is just 5 minutes from my house. I know a lot of people like to go to the downtown breweries, but this is a great spot here. Always has something going on....yet areas away from everything you can just chill with your beer if you want.

This 19th-century general store is a unique attraction in the city, brimming with local flavor and rich history. This was my first visit to the Winston-Salem Mast General Store. Happy they were open on Labor Day. We have visited a few locations including the original store in Valle Crucis & Boone. I love their quality merchandise & great service! They had a lot of end of Summer sale merchandise that is worth checking out! I know folks especially with kids that visit just for the candy! Happy exploring 📍 Josephine Local Guide

Fun nostalgic place. Old school candy, wooden floors that creak when you walk. 2 levels. Toys and jellies you won't find anywhere else. Books, postcards, magnets, shirts. There's a whole hiking section. Parking deck next door.

What a fun place! Great selection of nice clothing and shoes for men, women, and children. Great camping and hiking supplies too. There is also a fun old time candy store right there in the general store. For a trip back in time you have to check out the Mast General Store

I love this store for the candy and toys and the popcorn is the best. It's a very beautiful store
Cecilia R — Google review
Great modern day store with a old general store fill.. Have all the knickknacks and candies you'd expect with modern camping gear, clothes, knives, and other neat things. There are 2 stories, the downstairs is shoes, clothes and a knife section. Staff are super nice and helpful. Great place to just check out. We were told to and happy we stopped in.
Anthony C — Google review
We were excited to come in and shop but we feel we were treated differently because of our race. My mother stood at the register while the two store clerks who appeared to be following us most of the time we were there, all of a sudden didn’t see us. They finally came to help us check out and were rude and standoffish. We left feeling awful and disappointed.
Zakia A — Google review
An Appalachian institution! Flagship Mast Store is in Valle Crucis. W-S's Mast Store opened recently in a restored historic building. This store has the BEST loose candy selection of all Mast stores!
Mark C — Google review
Even though the mast general store in the city it is just like the others out in the country area. You will still be stepping back in time by squeaky floors and buckets of candy. I will always enjoy a mast general store.

Reynolda Gardens-Wake Forest used to be the gardens of a magnificent estate and is now accessible during daylight hours. The gardens include a greenhouse with various plants that can be seen by walking through it in about 10 minutes, but one can do multiple laps due to the numerous captivating sights. Additionally, there are lovely outdoor gardens that change throughout the seasons, making each visit unique.
I love the greenhouse and gardens here. It’s free and open to the public. The greenhouse had specific hours, but the gardens do not. We really enjoyed seeing the beauty of the gardens. With spring here, it’s blooming so pretty! The greenhouse has a variety of specimens and even some you can buy. I recommend a walkabout when you have the chance.

THIS IS FREE! Absolutely incredible site to see and truly worth an admission fee! I love that Wake Forest has curated this stunning array of flowers and landscaping to create a peaceful oasis. Easily accessible to the Reynolda Mansion as well as walkable to the Reynolda Village. Plenty of parking, just follow the signs and pack your walking shoes. There is a lot to explore. Clean restrooms on site near the greenhouse. A perfect stop for anyone to visit, but a great stop on a long road trip such as myself! Stretched my legs, grabbed a coffee in the village and filled my camera roll with tons of flower pictures. Mid May the Roses were in the height of their bloom and were spectacular!

Always a nice, local place to step outside the city while in the city! Beautiful plants and garden, my pics here are in the fall but the greenhouse still has lots of beauty to see and it’s nice to walk around! You can see plants labeled from all over the world and learn more about horticulture and types of plants! They have a large variety and many plants we have never seen or heard of! Also a great place if you are trying to pick plants to do landscaping or decoration with at your house or property! You can also buy plants and the welcome center is nice, staff was pleasant and they have gifts and souvenirs you can buy! This place is free to enter and explore. Great place for a picnic too! Great views, and the staff do what they can to maintain the groomed trail, although they are often hampered by city budget, etc. Most recently, they have had city maintenace drop in loads of dirt to help smooth out some of the more eroded sections, which has been a big help. They have also established the Jesus Trail, which isn't groomed, for those seeking a more woodsy (and challenging!) experience.

Gorgeous Trail around the entire lake. I’ve walked dozens of times and biked several times. Also a Beautiful spot for kayaking. And a Big park for children. Going today to fish on kayak.

Incorrect location, this isn’t the place to come to if you’re going to Salem lake. This is around 15 minutes away from the actual Salem Lake location. Waze takes you to the correct location.

Love Bailey Park. It's a wide item grassy space with covered and not covered seating on one end and it's surrounded by an eclectic assortment of businesses, including restaurants, bars, breweries, coffee shops, and a yoga studio. There are many events held in and around the park. I believe they're posted on the Innovation Quarter website. Just really cool, chill vibes...

Bailey Park is one of my favorite spots in Winston-Salem! It’s always lively but still relaxing, perfect for meeting friends, enjoying a picnic, or just soaking up the sunshine. Love that it’s surrounded by great restaurants, bars, and coffee shops too.

Beautiful, well kept park in a quaint little area. Lots of little restaurants, coffee shops and stores to check out all within walking distance. Restrooms were also clean and in good order. There were plenty of tables with umbrellas if you want to bring a picnic and eat while people watching. Saw lots of people with dogs as well so I do believe it is a dog friendly park. We were here for a 5K and have to say it was just a beautiful spot. Took lots of cute pictures of my kids.

The grounds were lush and green! The restrooms were ok. The Amphitheatre was facing away from the vending area but it carried the music across the lawn area. The ornamental were gorgeous - I would lean towards a herbal or urban garden usage for added value! Overall a well thought out location but it needs more public parking.

The Katharine Brasserie & Bar

Restaurant
The Katharine Brasserie & Bar is an elegant and modern dining spot that offers a unique blend of Southern and French cuisine. Located in the historic RJ Reynolds Building, it pays homage to the Reynolds family's matriarch, Katharine. The menu features a variety of traditional Parisian brasserie dishes with a touch of upscale American Southern flavors. From mussels and beef tartare to North Carolina trout and seared duck breast, there's something for every palate.
I ate there for lunch. Most of the menu is pretty pretty mainstream, but I have a more adventurous palate. So I ordered amazing chickpea fritters and the best roasted carrots that made me wonder what else the chef can do. The atmosphere presents like a high-end French bistro with lots of charm. There's plenty of fun cocktails to highlight your meal.

Katherine Brasserie and Bar was fantastic! Our server was so attentive and friendly, and the food was absolutely delicious. Great atmosphere too, definitely a spot I’d recommend and can’t wait to visit again!

I had dinner at the Katharine Saturday night and had an amazing experience! Our server for the evening was Gene, he provided excellent service and recommendations. There were also a lot of help at hand to keep our waters refilled and take our empty plates. The food was outstanding and we had the perfect wine to pair with our entrees. We had three boeuf bourguignon, and the duck breast, both were so delicious and didn't even require a knife. The valet service was very helpful and fast. Thanks for a wonderful Saturday night!

We had lunch here on Christmas Day at 1:45 and our waitress was great however our food was burnt. The toast was over done and the strata was completely black on the bottom and the top was also blackened. We also had oysters and deviled eggs which were actually very good. Service was great but was not that impressed with our main dishes being burnt, especially for our Christmas Day lunch. This was our third time coming

I rented out one of the igloos that's located on the side of the hotel. Was a great experience! I do recommend bringing 4 people (great double date idea) as the space is large enough to accommodate, and the food quantity was enough. There are board games and plenty of comfort items (pillows, blankets, etc.) to go around. I do recommend still dressing warm during the colder months as the insulation isn't the best, understandably. They do have both a space heater and a faux fireplace that helped immensely. The food (charcuterie board) was a great and we also had a salmon appetizer that filled us up. So, again, if you want to sample an entreé without feeling like you're going to explode, I'd recommend bringing more people. Either way it was a great experience to have for a special day ❤️.
Tris P — Google review
Welcoming establishment, attentive service, subdued (low key?) and positive ambiance. They let the service and food speak for themselves. And both were excellent. Our reservations were for a Sunday evening. We were seated immediately. I particularly enjoyed several of the house drinks - they were very well done. Several of the tables around us lingered. People did not seem to be rushed out after dining. One table had a baby with them, another had two "tweens," yet another was full of retirees. Families of all ages were enjoying themselves that evening. The food did not lean too heavily on salt like some fancy spots do. Everything came together very nicely, flavors complimenting one another without letting any single thing make an unbalanced dish. We left more than satisfied and hope we have the opportunity to return!

A Delightful Evening at Katherine Brasserie & Bar Nestled in an inviting atmosphere, Katherine Brasserie & Bar provided a wonderful dining experience from start to finish. With a well-curated drink menu, I opted for the Obscurity, a cocktail reminiscent of tonic grapefruit water with a subtle yet satisfying kick from smoked jalapeño. It was a bold yet balanced choice that I’d definitely order again. My friend chose the Omen: Cabernet, a rich and smooth selection that paired beautifully with the evening. Skipping appetizers turned out to be a great decision, as we were treated to a fresh, warm bread loaf accompanied by heavenly whipped butter—simple but undeniably delicious. For my entrée, I selected the Saumon et Gruau de Mais: a perfectly seared salmon nestled on creamy stone-ground grits, bathed in a smoked garlic buttermilk sauce with black lemon, chervil, and chili oil. The sauce was the standout component, bringing a rich, smoky depth to the dish, while the grits had a wonderful consistency—creamy yet textured. I can see why they suggest pairing it with a Schlumberger Pinot Blanc; the bright acidity would complement the richness of the dish beautifully. My friend chose the Steak au Poivre, a pepper-crusted 12 oz N.Y. strip steak served with truffle pomme purée and crispy Brussels sprouts. The steak was well-executed, though I found the pepper crust to be on the intense side, whereas my friend thought it was just right. The Brussels sprouts were crispy and flavorful, a perfect side to the indulgent dish. We visited on a quiet Wednesday night, and the staff was attentive, friendly, and prompt without being intrusive. The overall experience was smooth, relaxing, and left us eager to return. With so many intriguing options on the menu, I’ll definitely be back to explore more. If you’re looking for a spot that delivers on both drinks and food, Katherine Brasserie & Bar is worth a visit.

Krankies is a popular downtown Winston-Salem cafe known for its in-house roasted coffee, live entertainment at night, and farm-to-table menu. The cafe offers a variety of breakfast and brunch options, including gluten-free bread for sandwiches and vegetarian/vegan dishes. One of their must-try items is the iconic Krankies Classic fried chicken biscuit with Texas Pete and honey. They also take pride in their specialty coffee blends, such as pour-overs and drip coffee.
Stumbled upon this gem on complete accident and so glad we did!! Delicious biscuit sandwiches, great beverage options. Unique, authentic, not overly fussy. Loved it! Great patio, we had our dogs with us passing through town and wanted to walk the long branch trail. A perfect quick stop!

First Visit to Krankies, Winston-Salem Stopped by Krankies for the first time and really enjoyed the experience. The place has a sweet vibe — set in an old tobacco-style warehouse downtown with a cool, relaxed energy that fits Winston-Salem perfectly. I ordered a Nitro Cold Brew, which was incredibly smooth — one of the better ones I’ve had in a while. For food, I tried the Egg & Cheese Biscuit (added sausage) and the Krankies Classic, their chicken biscuit topped with hot sauce and honey. Both sandwiches were full of flavor — the sausage and chicken were excellent, and the flavor balance was spot on. If I had one small critique, it would be the biscuit itself — a little dry and crumbly for my taste. But the contents more than made up for it. Overall, Krankies has great coffee, solid food, and a welcoming atmosphere that makes you want to come back. I took a few videos while I was there — the space really has that perfect blend of history and charm.

Stopped in here on a whim for coffee. Didn't realize this seems to be a hot-spot. There were quite a few people there and a very long line. Instead of leaving I figured with a wait like this it must be good. So glad we stayed. The line move swiftly. The coffee and food were phenomenal! The chicken biscuit was huge and so good. The location is pretty cool too, an old historic building in the downtown area. There's a really nice park around the corner and you can jog via sidewalk and jogging path all the way to the Old Salem section, which was cool too.

Amazing breakfast spot if you want good chicken or biscuits. We tried a few chicken biscuits (The Hangover Helper, Dirt South, and the Bluebird) and had the wedges as well. The green sauce for the wedges was delicious. No fountain sodas but they have coffee options and drinks in the can or bottle. The fruit cup was a good value for the kiddos.

It was my first time here…cool spot and nice outdoor seating. You order at a counter and you are called when the food is ready. I went for lunch and got a Dirty South biscuit sandwich. It was pretty good, but the biscuit was pretty dry (maybe made in the morning and I had it for lunch?). Regardless, it was pretty good and I would go back
Brian M — Google review
Krankies is the quintessential Winston Salem dining experience—families, couples and individuals flocking to the place on weekends to grab either a quick bite or to lounge around slowly sipping a drink. We visited on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and weren’t disappointed. We got their biscuits—Krankies Classic and Nashville Hot—the former being your traditional southern style chicken with honey, and the latter being your usual hot Nashville style fried chicken. Both hit the spot. A lot of their biscuits come with bacon, but I guess you can ask them to get rid of bacon if you don’t eat it. The chai latte was decent, it was nothing to write home about. Their drinks menu is quite extensive with your usual coffees to creative takes on hot beverages to interesting cocktails. Parking area is quite small, but you can find parking nearby if you’re willing to wait. The seating area inside is comprised of a main hall with 2 auxiliary smaller seating areas adjoining it. You walk up to the counter, order your food and they call your name when it’s ready. Overall, it was a pretty decent dining experience.

I had been wanting to try this place for awhile- I came here a year or so ago with a friend but the line was out the door and we didn't have time to wait. This time, I came on a Sunday around noon, thinking I might have come after the early morning brunch rush, but that was not the case! The line was still pretty long but I was committed to finally eating here! I brought a book and waited in line. It's a nice, open concept space with some outdoor seating available as well. The line moved quickly though, it took me about 20 minutes to get to the counter and place my order. I ended up going with the brown sugar latte and the hangover helper biscuit sandwich. I sat at a high top inside and my order came out in about 10 minutes. The latte was decent and the biscuit was gigantic, even after cutting it in half. It came with a side of sausage gravy that was great for dipping. Unfortunately, I felt the sandwich didn't quite deliver on flavor. Not bad by any means, and like I said, great portion, but it was just missing something. I added a bit more hot sauce to it. I do wish the egg were fried! The gravy too was nice and thick but somewhat bland as well. Price wise, it's pretty standard, about $17 for the sandwich and coffee before tip. Given the relatively long waits, not sure I will be back here soon - but I would be interested in trying a couple other biscuits and coffee specialty drinks to see if the flavor profiles deliver.

Mozelle's

Southern restaurant (US)
Mozelle's Fresh Southern Bistro is a locally-owned gem that embodies true Southern hospitality. The restaurant is committed to supporting local businesses by sourcing ingredients from neighboring family-run establishments and suppliers who share their values of environmental stewardship and humane treatment of animals. With an emphasis on farm-to-table dining, the bistro offers a cozy indoor and outdoor dining experience as well as curbside takeout.
Mozelle’s is a must-visit! The tomato pie was hands down one of the best things either of us has ever eaten—rich, flavorful, and perfectly balanced. And that crust—buttery, flaky, and golden—could hold its own in any bakery. It brought the whole dish together in the most delicious way. Wayne said the shrimp and grits earn a solid spot in his Top 5 meals of all time—creamy, savory, and packed with depth. The restaurant is warm and inviting, with a cozy yet elevated atmosphere. Fair prices, and very cute. Whether you’re seated inside or on the patio, it feels like the kind of place you want to linger. Our server Gui was exceptional—attentive, welcoming, and even offered us great dining recommendations for nearby towns. We’d drive back just for this meal. Mozelle’s delivers Southern comfort food with care, creativity, and truly memorable flavors. That pie...I have never had anything like it.
Jaimie H — Google review
The restaurant itself is lovely and the place settings are all very curated and cute. I would give five stars for service even though our waiter forgot about us at the end of our experience... but another gal stepped up and she gave me a candle and lit it for me and wished me happy birthday! The food was good and I think it was worth the price; we just went at a very busy time. I would give the atmosphere 3.5 stars because inside the restaurant is very cramped and you can hear, well, everything that goes on while cooking and your neighbors' conversations, too. I do understand why people love this place though. It's an elevated take on southern comfort food in a bougie part of downtown Winston.

Delicious tomato pie, homey and healthy. The indoor dining area feels cozy but a little hot. The burger is delicious, feels like a mix of shake shack and in n out, definitely worth it for $16. Would recommend it if you run out of options in Winston Salem

I had a ribeye sandwich with French fries. The steak was tender and delicious. The sweet peppers were a great touch! It was served on. “Cuban” hoagie roll. I wouldn’t classify it as Cuban bread but it was delicious! I had heard so much about the Tomato Pie that I took one home to try. This is my first Tomato Pie experience and I must say: YUM! Highly recommend this spot for a delicious meal and excellent service!

Everything was delicious and the service was spectacular. Sat at one of the tables outside for my husband's birthday and the summer breeze paired perfectly with the port spritzer 😉 definitely try the Southern egg rolls, the pulled pork and collards was a stellar combo. The fried chicken with compote was some of the best fried chicken I've ever had.

The restaurant offers American cuisine with a Southern flair, featuring dishes like jambalaya and sandwiches made with the freshest seasonal ingredients. Its upscale ambiance and library-inspired bar provide a cozy and charming setting for guests to enjoy award-winning cuisine.
Nice venue, definitely will go back to visit. Super creative and delicious app in Lobster Spring roll with Thai curry dipping sauce. Hats off for chucks of lobster w/ the sauce worth the price. The wine list was quite approachable and reasonably priced. The shrimp & grits were quite tasty, I give it a slight edge over Mozelles S&G. Portion size for the price was right and look forward to the seasonal menu changes.

I have been two other times . I need to say we went on a Thursday night and the restaurant was only 1/3 to 1/2 full which provided a nice chill atmosphere. Music was really loud, especially for my mom with hearing aids. Hostess was professional and kind, pointing out step hazards on the way to the table. We were not approached right away but I don't know how many servers were working. Our server was nice and I liked her but she seemed distracted and disassociated a bit. This would continue until about 2/3 way through service where she seemed to click in. I got bread service which was nice but I don't love the butter presentation. The slices (thin) are nice, but as soon as you try to get your own butter, it all smashes together. All of the bread was good, although I would have liked the biscuits to be more flaky. The foccacia was excellent. We also ordered the street corn dip which was fantastic. Honestly I secretly wanted fritos but the chips that came with it were okay. My daughter and I ordered onion soup and even though common sense dictates soup should be hot, this was boiling hot. My daughter burned her tongue and face so let your soup cool! Most soup is served too cold so nice to be served hot soup although I had to wait 10 minutes to eat it. It was VERY good however. A lot of flavors layered in there. My dad got the special Salmon and it was impressive with a large variety of flavors and sauces. Really nice herb presentation of the salmon and he said it was cooked nicely. My mom had the shrimp which were fresh (not fishy) with a nice stuffing. This was served with alfredo pasta which was fine, but the sauce was no existent and had been absorbed into the pasta. My son in law had the duck and he about ate the plate so that's all I'm going to say about that. He said the green beans were the best green beans he had ever had in his life. My daughter had the chicken gnocchi and she said she couldn't taste the lemon and didn't seem wild about it, but I didn't taste it. I did taste the pasta and shrimp dish. And I did taste the salmon special. I didn't have time to taste the duck. I forgot to mention I ordered a blueberry lemonade from the bar while we were waiting for my kids to arrive and it was forgotten by the server and I had to ask for it 20 minutes later (no big deal) but not what I would expect in this type of restaurant. We also had to ask for a carafe of ice water which my parents were drinking even though another table was brought one automatically. Not sure there is a process for the water though. It's summer and the glasses are small for water. I also didn't like the small mason jars as glasses. They are akward to drink out of in my opinion (larger mason jars would be easier). I know its supposed to be cute and themed but I just found them difficult to hold and drink out of. The iced tea was amazing and I"m super picky about my tea. Like seriously. What the heck do you guys do to that? Probably the best I've ever had anywhere. I had the regular salmon which was slightly overcooked but I like it that way so it was all good. I didn't like the lobster sauce it was too rich for me but it tasted good and had good flavor. The cabbage was wonderful. I really liked the contrasting flavors. Overall, the food was amazing, fresh and a hit and I would have happily given five stars but my parents thought the service was really sub par. They are very very generous with large portions. You will not leave hungry. Regarding the server, I thought she picked it up toward the end, maybe she was less busy. Of course I would come here again as its fun to try the seasonal menus and the chef in my opinon is excellent as well as his kitchen. Also, nothing to do with the restaurant but please be careful. There was a deal happening on the street outside the restaurant. Lock your cars if you park on the street or even in the parking lot. It is downtown Winston and thats interesting sometimes.....Gorgeous garden, patio and history. Very fun date place, would be a cool wedding venue as well.

I was at this restaurant for a pharmaceutical dinner so my review is based on that. I love the location and ambience, and the food was good. Though the menu I had was limited, I wish their protein options included meat and not just fish and chicken. Granted, I did not get the chance to look at the full menu, but most places for pharmaceutical dinners had beef options. I ordered the chicken and waffles and this was delicious. The lobster bisque was also excellent.

Great experience at Spring House. We were late to our reservation and last patrons in the restaurant, but the staff and kitchen accommodated us. The service was attentive and the food was delicious, although that had a fairly limited gluten free options.

If you have never had a chef's tasting here, DO IT! You will be tremendously rewarded for leaving the decisions of the meal in the hand of an expert like Chef Tim, and his staff. We had so many thoughtful courses that offered a glimpse into where the chef is currently being creative with seafood and pork. Who knows...maybe there will be a surprise aperitif (the surprise is that there will be more food after you drink it) Don't even get me started on the chocolate cake and ooey gooey cake dessert course that none of us thought we had room for. After one bite, we knew we had to find a way. So many incredible presentations, our server was wonderful, and everyone was helpful, warm and inviting. Such a special meal. Such a special place.

We went here for the first time for our anniversary and loved everything about the evening. The venue is just beautiful, and our server was so warm and welcoming! As for the food, we found it creative and delicious. The seasonal menu highlights all the best of summer. Looking forward to going again, perhaps in cooler weather when we could eat on the patio.
Janet W — Google review
Super disappointed with this place. For such a tiny menu, way too many things were sold out. That left us with barely any options to choose from, which already felt like a bad start. We ended up with one appetizer and three entrées, plus one soda and one non-alcoholic drink. The bill came to $189, which would’ve been fine if the food was actually good — but everything was bland and totally lacking flavor. For that price, I expected a lot more. Between the small menu, the number of items unavailable, and the underwhelming food, I honestly wouldn’t go back. Definitely not worth the money.

Incredible. There was a short wait when we arrived for dinner, but the staff was very accommodating and made us drinks while we waited. Server asked us upfront if we had any allergies or needed any dietary accommodations. The kids meals were huge portions and simple enough for picky eaters! Their margaritas are fantastic, the food was delicious, and the vibe was immaculate. 10/10 will definitely eat here again.

Kind of hard to find- no clear marking from the road, parking is unclear. Food was good, although expensive. Margarita was also good. Atmosphere was quirky, quaint and cute. Although the tall tables have backless stools so there’s no where to put jackets, etc.

The Porch Kitchen and Cantina is hands-down one of my favorite spots in Winston! The atmosphere is fun, welcoming, and full of character. The staff was friendly and attentive from the moment we walked in, and our server went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience. The food? Incredible. Everything we ordered was bursting with flavor, especially the Coca-Cola Carnitas Flautas and the Sweet Pete Puffy Tacos—so unique and delicious. And don’t even get me started on the margaritas! The Blood Orange and Spicy Avocado ones were next level. It’s the perfect place to grab dinner with friends, enjoy a date night, or just chill on the patio with a drink. Highly recommend—this place truly brings the Tex-Mex vibes with a creative twist!

I would give the service 5 stars as the waitress was very nice and attentive. Love that they are dog friendly which is a huge plus ! The only disappointing part is the food which has potential to be so good if only it weren’t so bland. Both my partner and I were disappointed about the lack of flavor. We both ended up adding salt to our food which didn’t really help. Overall though great atmosphere and aesthetic.

I recently had the pleasure of dining at The Porch – Kitchen and Cantina, and I must say, the experience was a mix of highs and lows. Atmosphere: The ambiance was truly the standout. From the moment I walked in, I was struck by the vibrant and welcoming vibe. The décor had a stylish, rustic-chic charm with warm lighting, inviting colors, and a modern Southwestern feel that instantly put me in a good mood. Whether you're meeting friends for a casual night out or on a dinner date, the atmosphere here makes you feel like you’re in the right place. There was a definite energy to the space — lively but not overwhelming — which made the dining experience feel special. Space/Layout: That being said, the space was a bit tight. The tables are placed fairly close together, and during busier times it felt somewhat cramped. If you value personal space or are dining with a larger group, you might feel slightly boxed in. A bit more breathing room would’ve elevated the comfort level significantly. Food: Here’s where the experience fell a bit short. While the menu offers a promising variety of Tex-Mex-inspired dishes, the execution didn’t quite live up to the expectation. Some items arrived lukewarm, and the flavors didn’t quite pop as much as I had hoped. It wasn’t bad by any means — just lacking that bold, crave-worthy taste that would make me rush back. A little more attention to seasoning, temperature, and presentation could really take the food up a notch. Service: Now to the shining star of the evening — our waitress. She was absolutely phenomenal! Attentive without being overbearing, friendly, knowledgeable about the menu, and incredibly accommodating. Even when things weren't perfect with the food, her excellent service made us feel taken care of and appreciated. She brought an energy that matched the atmosphere and truly made the visit worthwhile. Final Thoughts: The Porch – Kitchen and Cantina has tons of potential. With its incredible atmosphere and top-notch service, it creates a space you want to love. While the food could use some refining, especially in flavor and consistency, the overall experience was still enjoyable. I’d be willing to give it another shot — especially if they tweak a few things in the kitchen.

Overall a very good experience. We ate here around 3pm on a Monday. It was very slow so we expected the best service which we received. Food was very fresh and pretty authentic. We would recommend trying!

Would have given 2 stars, but after speaking with a manager about my concerns, they offered a discount to be refunded - so I'll add a star. We dined outside on the ground floor with 6 adults and 4 kids between us. This was our first time eating here for my family. •Service: apps came before drinks (only soft drinks and water were ordered), and silverware/napkins came after the main course. But only after we had to ask multiple people for them multiple times. P.s. eating with kids means we need napkins stat, folks. •Food: meh. I ordered the 3 taco plate; I chose the fried chicken, shrimp, and Houston beef as my proteins. The shrimp were naked and very bland, with no seasoning or sauce on them and only shredded cheese on top. The fried chicken was simply thin strips of what looked like fried cutlets + shredded cheese. The beef was pretty flavorful, best out of the three, I suppose + the shredded cheese. The plate did come with a spoonful of guacamole, sour cream, and pico on the side. Also, they got my tortilla preferences wrong (they ask upon ordering). For the record, this food did not taste like Tex-Mex, save the yellow cheese dip, and we have lived in San Antonio. My husband got the breakfast tacos and said they were completely underwhelming. •Misc: our children were enjoying playing next to our table (we dined outside and no one was sitting close by), when they found some extra outdoor chairs in a stack by our table and chose to arrange them to sit around together in the grass, when an employee came to the table to tell us pretty bluntly "can you ask your children to stop playing with the chairs?". (Umm, they moved them and then sat in them, so I'm not sure what the problem was.) After the chairs were stacked back up in the original spot, another employee came out to retrieve them and swiftly took them away. After we paid, I decided to go inside to discretely address some of my concerns with the manager. I mentioned the service issues to which they told me they were short staffed this day. Then I asked about the chairs. They said the kids were being rough with the chairs. When asked what they were supposedly doing, they said they were seen dragging them by the legs and flipping them on their side. I told them I didn't see any of that occurring even though I was sitting right there watching (and I wouldn't let ours be rough or inappropriate with someone else's property anyway). They mentioned something about their "policy" about the chairs that I can't precisely recall. They ended up offering me a discount to help make up for the service (I didn't even mention the food). We don't plan on returning.

Not sure what happened to this place. I remember when there was a waiting list almost every day it was open. We haven't eaten here in several years, super busy life, and were excited to try again. Initially we noticed only a few tables were taken, I wondered why and thought maybe because its a Monday. My daughter ordered fish tacos and I ordered the veggie burger. The fish on the tacos were fried way too long, they were burnt, dark brown and dry. My burger fell apart, taste was okay but it was apparent there was no love when preparing, and my tator tots were still cold on the inside, and very light in color, not cooked long enough. The gentleman who brought us the food slammed our plates down and immediately asked if we had everything we needed. I'll never understand why servers ask you if you have everything you need before having a few moments with your food. Anyway, our server went MIA for a while, so long that it didnt make sense for us to order something else for my daughter. We asked for the check and left. It appears the owners must not be involved as much as before, I dont think they would have allowed the food to leave the kitchen the way it did. So sad to see a really good restaurant go down hill, especially in our area and we are very limited to decent restaurants.

I had the bacon cheeseburger and hubby had the fried shrimp po’ boy. Both were delicious. Buns on both were toasted. Burger was huge and cooked like I like it. Great and attentive service. Will be back! Suggest going early. It was packed with a line by 6 on a Monday!

First time here. Brought my wife here for her birthday before Duke and Wake game. Roast beef grinder lacked flavor. Meat was cooked just right and the bread was good just missing something. I got the hot dog and it was ok. Not bad. First thing through the door the host insulted my wife because she had a Duke shirt on going on to say she hated wake as well?? Service was slow but it was busy. I get it. The menu is exciting and I will definitely try again. I had better hopes for this place but I have to be honest on my review. Can’t recommend but will come back for another try.

I decided to try here today. Nice place, it was busy. Went for lunch. I ordered the (2C) grilled steak on Kaiser bun with lettuce, tomato, Cheddar cheese & Mayo and a side of fries. Everything was served hot and fresh. The bread was fresh, The fries were crispy, and good. Service was friendly & good. Just a little slow but it was due to them being so busy.

I just learned of this place TODAY while in Winston seeing my dentist (I live in Danville, VA). My wife & I felt very comfortable & welcomed. The wait staff was attentive & the food came out fast & hot! I had the corned beef Reuben w/ fries & my wife had a turkey grinder w/ chips. BOTH sandwiches were HUGE (we could have shared if we could have agreed)! We'll definitely be frequenting this place every time we come to Winston (which is often). Thanks for a great experience! (Edited to add) I went back today (10/9/25) & enjoyed a Portobello Sandwich. My wife got the Reuben this time & my mom got a gyro. Everything was amazing!!! I love the vibe in this place! I'll be back in a couple of weeks! Hahahahaha

2/22/24 updating my previous review. I think a place that maintains its integrity through hard times & still provides service with a smile & gratitude for your business, needs to be shown gratitude right back at them. Thank you West End Cafe for being that business that still shows kindness & care. 🙏🏼❣️ Food is always fresh & always delicious! The service has been the same for over 20 years! Friendly, attentive, and so welcoming! The best, most consistent restaurant in Winston-Salem.

Bernardin’s Restaurant @ Zevely House is an upscale, contemporary dining establishment known for its exceptional haute cuisine and globally-inspired wines. The restaurant offers a charming dining room with stylish decor, a crackling fireplace, and plush seating, as well as an outdoor patio for alfresco dining. The menu features New American takes on seafood, lamb, veal & beef with Asian and French influences.
I wanted to do something very special for my husband’s birthday this year. Bernardin’s did not disappoint. The place was beautiful, the atmosphere was cozy and quiet. The staff was great. We both loved our food. We shared a Brussels sprouts appetizer and we also shared the Cinnamon Roll Bread pudding. He had the Atlantic Salmon for his entree and I had the Chilean Sea Bass. We tried some of each others of course. Everything was just wonderful. Thank you for a great evening.

Always an amazing special occasion here. Alec is our favorite server. Beautiful atmosphere on the covered patio, perfect cocktails and incredible apps and entrees. Dessert is no exception. The homemade strawberry shortcake is my absolute favorite. As you can see it was my birthday order. We love everything about this fabulous restaurant.

Delicious curated dining choices. We started with appetizers : Korean gojoung steak bites -Yum ..could have eaten 5 of these! And a tomato burrata, -would have been perfect if had a summer garden tomato ..We had filet mignon-cooked perfectly.... and the emu-seared rare to med rare-needed additional sear, however, tasted similar to the filet...and the special of red snapper-cooked perfectly except the accompanying sliced potatoes were undercooked. Service was impeccable with our waiter very prompt and knowledgeable of all menu items. Nice wine selection with generous pours, no cocktail menu but willing to make most requested cocktails I had very good Old Fashioned. Finally had the strawberry shortcake-very british presentation and deliciously delicate and the cinnamon roll bread pudding- a decadently sweet surprise served the a balancing vanilla ice cream-don't skip this one. Took a hit on the wallet- but worthy!

Summary: This was our first time to Bernardin's restaurant. The skinny: great service, good food, atmosphere is great upstairs, but lord there are some issues in the basement (where the bathrooms are)! We made a reservation for 5:45 pm and showed up around 5:15, shortly after they opened. We were the only ones there and were sat straight away in a small, cozy room. As it would turn out, we were the only ones sat in that room, which made date night feel very special. The waitress Abby was very kind, made wonderful recommendations, and was the perfect amount of attentive that you want when dining out on a date. She knew the bourbon and rye in stock and had actually eaten there so she was able to describe the food to my date. The drinks that came were impeccable. I like a Manhattan up with rye, which is unfortunately difficult for some places to make. The bar tender at Bernardin's mastered it, fortunately. My date's martini came extra dirty, just how she ordered it - another thing that we know doesn't happen just anywhere. The food was delicious. My date had the lobster over lobster and I had the elk. She loved the lobster, stating that the sauce was just enough to highlight but not outshine the lobster flavor. I ordered the elk medium rare, expecting a bit on the rare side. It was delivered medium well, but was still very good. We ordered snails and brussels for an appetizer (both amazing), so the smaller entree sizes were actually perfect and we left full. The only real negative thing I have to say is that there is a terrible stagnant smell in the washrooms, located in the basement, for which they have installed fans and maybe a dehumidifier. My date reported that when she stepped into the lady's room, the tiles squished down and water came up, which was off-putting. Fortunately they are in the basement, far enough from the tables that you can't smell them.

We visited for dinner and were immediately drawn to the charm of the beautifully preserved historic house. The outdoor patio is a definite highlight, offering a pleasant ambiance. Our server greeted us warmly and explained the evening’s specials. We started with the watermelon gazpacho and the classic Caesar salad. From a culinary perspective, the gazpacho lacked depth and seasoning, coming across as somewhat bland. The Caesar salad was visually appealing but the addition of tomatoes introduced a bitterness that disrupted the balance of flavors. I ordered the lamb chops medium-well, but they arrived rare, indicating a lapse in kitchen communication or execution. The accompanying sauce did not complement the dish, falling short of what one would expect from a dish of this caliber. My friend’s meal was similarly disappointing. While presentation was thoughtfully executed, the focus on aesthetics seemed to overshadow the importance of taste and quality. We decided to end our experience early and requested the check. Our server processed payment without checking back, which missed an opportunity to address any concerns or improve guest satisfaction. Overall, the restaurant shows promise, especially with its outdoor setting and ambiance, but there are clear areas in food preparation and service that require attention. I’m rating it two stars with hope for improvement.

We always enjoy going here. The food is amazing and the service is always great. Abby, our server, was absolutely incredible. I got the escargot and hubby got the clam chowder. Both were wonderful. I got the seared ahi tuna rare and John got the lamb chops rare. Both were outstanding. The only complaint was the co owner, Mr. Terry Lee was rude to us and to the hostess. We got there before they opened only because the traffic from our house to the restaurant wasn't as bad as usual. We arrived about 7 minutes to 5pm. Mr. Lee saw us and started screaming that "we open at 5. He said this 5 times. I kept saying we know. Once the door was unlocked and we walked in, we asked the hostess if we could have a table on the patio. She took us to a table outside and Mr. Lee started screaming at the hostess asking her is that table reserved. She told him no. To me Mr. Lee was very rude to us as customers and to the hostess who is part of his staff. I was not happy the way he treated us. But when he screamed at the hostess that really made me mad. One should NEVER scream at staff in front of customers. We love the restaurant and will continue to eat there. And I did talk to Mr. Lee about his behavior.

Restaurant
The Old Fourth Street Filling Station is a trendy and upscale New American restaurant and bar located in the historic West End of downtown Winston-Salem. It offers a casual dining experience with friendly service, delicious food, and generous portions. The restaurant features a cozy fireplace inside and a covered outdoor terrace for dining. On Sundays, they serve brunch from 11 am to 3 pm. The menu includes dishes like eggplant Ratatouille with a spicy kick and surprising desserts like strawberry cake.
We ordered shrimp and grits and the seafood pasta as our entrees, shared the chicken autumn salad and the limoncello spritz. Must say that everything tasted good except for the grits. Grits came with a very very very creamy and cheesy sauce - so unless you like extra creamy, this might be too much. The texture of the grits tasted like it was not done yet. Well cooked grits are usually smooth in texture, yet this one was crumbly and chunky. Other than that, we had a good server who was very calm and put together, which we appreciated. Would come back again.

We were seated right away, they have outside and inside seating. The outside was clean and felt cozy. Lots of space outside and parts of it were covered as well. Our waiter Casey/Kasey was slow. For an upscale restaurant the spinach and crab dip were SMALL dip bowls for sharing and burnt on edges upon appearance. We were a party of 4. We would wait 20 minutes for drinks. Meals were average for the price. Slightly disappointed compared to our other dining experiences. Probably won’t return, but believe I’m more chances.

While the name calls to mind a gas station-turned-pub, the Fourth Street Filling Station is a bit more upmarket than that. It isn’t fine dining but rather a place where you can get a steak. The worst that can be said about this place is that it isn’t terrible innovative: apps, salads, sandwiches, a few seafood and pasta dishes, and the aforementioned steaks. In the grand scheme of things, however, there are far greater culinary sins than not offering anything unique. The Filling Station boasts a spacious patio, and even as it got busier, our group of four was able to enjoy a comfortable meal. Our server was friendly and helpfully offered drink recommendations, and the kitchen didn’t leave us waiting long for our food. The menu boldly claims Winston’s Best Calamari, so we decided to put that to the test. While there may be a match out there somewhere, the Filling Station’s version is quite good: a generous portion, well-breaded, not overcooked, and paired with both a superb cocktail sauce and a tangy remoulade. My entrée – a jambalaya – was likewise very satisfying. I’ve had jambalayas that were disappointingly dry, and I appreciated the gravy in this one. Though it offered no heat, it was still flavorful, and the shrimp were sizeable. The Filling Station isn’t cheap – most entrees in the twenties and sandwiches in the mid-teens – but given rising food costs, the prices aren’t out of line for what they offer. If you’re looking for a “nice meal” destination with solid food and plenty of seating, the Filling Station presents an appealing option provided that you are OK with the somewhat predictable menu.

The servers are always really nice and the food is amazing, and so is the atmosphere. It’s a great spot for a romantic dinner, and I’m sure it would be good for business too. It’s always quiet, cozy, and warm. I always get the shrimp tortellini and my wife gets the blackened chicken Alfredo. We’ve been coming here for years now, as boyfriend and girlfriend, then fiancés, and now as husband and wife, and we make the drive from our house 45 minutes away. Every time it’s worth the drive and the price. I’d also really recommend their brunch on Sundays. The only things - literally only things - I’d say aren’t great are that the younger servers seem to get a little less pleasant when they’re stressed because it’s busy (there’s one girl I’m thinking of specifically), and that they changed the appetizer bread from rolls to slices, and they cut them weird. Overall I’d give it like a 98%

Very spacious. Plenty of both indoor and outdoor seating. Good for all occasions. Food was great... especially the strawberry muffin which was amazing!! However, major drawback is policy that they will not customize your pizza. It must come exactly as described on the menu. We were astonished by the lack of flexibility here. I guess they figure their food is good enough that they can tell people to go elsewhere if they don't like it, which I respect. On the other hand, if you or your loved one has special dietary needs or preferences, you're better off going somewhere else

Really great location inside a cool building. I've only tried two of the pizzas so far but they've both been perfection. Staff is friendly and helpful. Oh and the chocolate cake is pretty great too. Can sometimes be difficult to find parking since it's in the city, but that's not unusual for a restaurant there. Recommendation: Grab a bianca pizza. Grab one of their little cups of olive oil. Grab a little cup of red pepper. Mix the red pepper and the olive oil together. Drizzle over the bianca. Enjoy heaven.

Good sized crowd on a Sunday at 6 pm which is a sign of a good, popular restaurant. We ordered take out consisting of the crab dip, Hemingway Florentine dinner, Meatloaf dinner, and Creme Brulee dessert. I recently spent a week in Winston-Salem while my son was working at a nearby hospital, and we were fortunate that the Village Tavern was right across the parking lot from his hotel. What I can say is that every single day, from lunch through dinner, this place stayed busy—and after visiting, I completely understand why. On our second visit, we went for a special occasion—my son’s birthday. We made reservations and walked over. The restaurant has a quiet, distinguished vibe that feels welcoming without being stuffy. Our server greeted us right away, and throughout the night he was friendly, attentive, and made excellent recommendations. We started with the Spicy Korean Fried Cauliflower appetizer, which was sweet, spicy, and uniquely served on a sheet of nori. My son suggested wrapping the cauliflower in the nori for an extra umami punch—delicious! For entrées, he ordered the Butcher’s Steak (a center cut aged Angus sirloin) with a loaded baked potato and green beans. Being from Texas, he knows his beef, and he gave it a wholehearted approval. I went with the Italian Sausage & Black Pepper Honey Pizza, made with their house-made Caputo flour dough. It was outstanding—sweet, savory, and more than enough to share, and the addition of the Black Pepper Honey, made it truly unique. Since it was a birthday dinner, we took dessert to go and chose the Very Best Carrot Cake. After letting dinner settle back at the hotel, we split it—and I have to say, in 60 years of enjoying desserts, this might be the best carrot cake I’ve ever had. Moist, rich, perfectly spiced, and topped with decadent cream cheese icing. My son agreed, and we both decided the server’s recommendation was spot on once again. All in all, Village Tavern more than lived up to its reputation. The food, service, and atmosphere made for a memorable evening, and I can see exactly why the parking lot stays full. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Winston-Salem!

The Mr. made reservations. We arrived a few minutes early but were still immediately seated. I never knew a restaurant could make vegetables taste so good. I ordered the spaghetti squash and zucchini (cauliflower, broccoli, roasted red peppers, pine nuts & parmesan in a plum tomato sauce...CHEF'S KISS). The Mr ordered the maple glazed pork chop (garlic mashed potatoes, apple chutney and green beans). We also ordered the spring rolls for the appetizer (sorry we ate most of it before I took the picture). Kameron was very helpful with the drink recommendations. We both ordered the strawberry citrus paloma. We were too full for dessert and had plenty to take home for leftovers. Would definitely recommend to family and friends 10/10 😋!

The service behind the bar was great. However, having ordered the crab cakes at over $30 was a disappointment. The cakes weren't greasy, but were both quite mushy and lacked consistency. The slaw, although quite crisp, was lacking in flavor. I obviously wasn't expecting Maryland style cakes, as what the menu called them, but nonetheless at that price they should have been better.

It is a great place, pricey, but definitely worth the money. Service is top notch as well. As we were leaving there was an elderly woman in front of us, and we heard a server speak into their mic and alert the front to open the door. Small details i know, but made it nice to see. Chicken sandwich is to die for as well as almost everything else on the menu. Highly recommend the sweet potato fries and mac and cheese.

Charlotte Douglas International Airport

International airport
Airport
Charlotte Douglas International Airport is a traveler-friendly hub with amenities like rocking chairs, free WiFi, and a 60-foot outdoor sculpture representing flight. The airport's culinary scene is diverse, featuring The Dumpling Lady food truck that adds a unique touch to Charlotte's growing food culture. Additionally, there are hotels nearby offering free shuttle services to the airport and various facilities for guests' convenience. Visitors appreciate the airport's relaxed atmosphere compared to other major hubs and enjoy the smooth traffic flow and efficient TSA operations.
Traveling through this airport was quite an experience, and I came away with mostly positive impressions. First and foremost, the sheer size of the airport stands out. It is truly a huge facility, and because of that, travelers should be prepared for long walks between check-in counters, gates, and baggage claim. On the positive side, the layout is generally well-marked with plenty of signs, so even though it’s spread out, it’s not confusing to navigate. One of the best aspects of this airport is the security process. Despite the volume of passengers, the lines move quickly and efficiently. I was pleasantly surprised by how short the wait times were, especially compared to other large airports where security can feel like the longest part of the journey. The staff were professional, attentive, and managed to keep the flow moving smoothly without making anyone feel rushed. Amenities throughout the airport also add to the overall comfort. There are plenty of seating areas, a decent selection of dining options, and charging stations conveniently located throughout the concourses. The restrooms were clean, which is always appreciated during travel. That being said, the long distances between gates might be a drawback for travelers with limited mobility or tight layovers. Anyone connecting flights should plan for extra time, as walking from one terminal to another can take longer than expected. Overall, though, the combination of efficient security, modern facilities, and a well-maintained environment makes this airport a solid choice for both domestic and international travel.

Very pleasant walking through this airport, at first I thought it was small🤔, but realized I was at the end (A39) and not the beginning🙂. Prepare to have yourself a walk, I had plenty of time for my flight departure. It got veryyyy busy (this was a Sunday), so give yourself lots of time from security to walking to your gate. They do have walking escalators which is super helpful if you have issues walking. Variety of eateries, places to sit and the coolest thing to me was the beautiful white rocking chairs paired with a live jazz pianist.😊🥰

Large Airport but Needs Better Signage and Facilities- Arrived at Charlotte International Airport (CLT) on a business trip. The airport is very large and spacious, but it was extremely crowded even during a non-holiday period. I did appreciate the signature rocking chairs placed throughout the terminal — a nice touch that provides plenty of seating and a bit of Southern charm. However, the food prices were way over the top for what’s offered, and the directions to rental car check-in and pick-up areas were confusing. The signage definitely needs updating to make navigation easier for travelers unfamiliar with the airport. They also need more restrooms, the lines were long, especially right after passengers deplaned. Overall, CLT is a modern and busy hub, but it could greatly improve the traveler experience with clearer signage, better facilities, and more reasonable dining prices.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 🛫🛫🛫🛫 Charlotte Douglas is one of the better large airports I’ve traveled through. It feels modern and high-tech, with plenty of screens, charging stations, and amenities that make connections easier. The terminals are clean and well laid out, with a good variety of food and coffee options. Wait times at security can get long during peak hours, but staff usually keep things moving. The airport is also undergoing a major expansion and modernization project to handle the surge in air travel as Charlotte and North Carolina continue to grow rapidly. The signature rocking chairs throughout add a unique Southern charm you don’t find elsewhere.

Recommendations: Give yourself a little extra time between flights because they have some horizontal conveyors down, and construction going on. Food: plenty of common airport food and drink places. Pricey like every other airport. I paid 15$ for a croissant chicken salad sandwich. Service: Everyone was pleasant and they were all smiling. They had people actively cleaning around seating and the bathroom which is nice. Services: all kinds of services. You can get a shoe shine, and massage amongst other things. Building: The place is pretty big. May take a bit to get around. Not like Chicago or Las Vegas Bathroom: Clean but busy. Parking: plenty of parking. Notes: This is a nice airport. Besides the upgrades going on, I wasn’t inconvenienced at all. Hit the thumbs up and give me a follow. I’m trying to be relevant or something. It’s my only bragging rights.
Nicolas W — Google review
As fas as airports go it is a nice and I like the rocking chairs there are plenty of shops and places to eat. I do not start here so I can’t speak of security or parking. Inside it’s a good airport for a layover.
Michael B — Google review
Charlotte Douglas International Airport is a very large and extremely busy airport, serving as a major hub with flights going in and out constantly. Because of its size and traffic, it can feel overwhelming at times, especially during peak hours. Currently, the airport is undergoing some renovations and construction projects, which, while ultimately aimed at improving the facilities, can cause delays, detours, and general inconvenience for travelers. Expect longer walks to certain gates, shifting layouts, and occasional bottlenecks. That said, the airport still manages to be fairly well-organized with clear signage, and there are plenty of dining and shopping options once you get past security. Staff generally keep things moving despite the heavy crowds, though wait times for security and boarding can be longer than at smaller airports. Overall, CLT is a busy, bustling hub that’s improving but currently a bit rough around the edges due to ongoing renovation. If you allow extra time and patience, it remains a solid airport with lots of connections and amenities.
Ruta P — Google review
I fly out of this airport often. CLT is among the busiest airports globally: In 2022 it was ranked 7th in the world for total arrivals/departures. It's a major hub (especially for American Airlines), serving tens of thousands of passengers each day and hundreds of flights. If you’re flying through or departing from, expect high volumes, and plan ahead (arrive early, be ready for busy checkpoints, etc.) Although They handle the flow very well. Most of the time :) ... Plenty of dining options, and efficient terminal layout.
